We kick off 2014 with a brief look back over our shoulder at the 1980s, a decade when Indiana Jones ran amok in temples, Michael Jackson actually thrilled us, the world was taken over by the CD, the PC and MTV, and Steve Jobs encountered his true calling. Right at the end, the Berlin Wall came crashing down.
delivery ontime, everytime gif t packs for all occasions
Back in NZ, the country almost underwent binary fission over the Springbok Tour, the Aussie cricketers tried on underarm bowling for size, Rob Muldoon experienced his own personal 1984 when he was snap-elected out of office, David Lange got a whiff of radiation and championed a nuclear-free New Zealand, the French came to town and left with the Rainbow Warrior in pieces, our collective champagne lifestyle came plummeting down with the Black Monday stock market crash and the All Blacks won the inaugural World Cup. And New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc took the wine world by storm.

In amongst all of that, the family-owned Glengarry was hard at work on its own personal empire, exploring the possibilities, pushing out the boundaries. The 1980s had their fair share of milestones, and while there is always plenty of chatter regarding the changing nature of retail, when you pare it down, it’s still all about good-quality products and outstanding service.
fun and education we’re known for it; it’s fun! credit accounts join us!
This edition of the Glengarry Wineletter sees the return of some names you may not have seen since those times, a collection of old favourites that have dusted themselves off and made themselves over for a new generation of wine lovers. It was in the 1980s that regulations regarding imported wine were relaxed, and we were quick to jump on the bandwagon (we’ve not got off yet, it’s moving so fast). Our first import was Australian fizz-kid, Angas Brut. Then came Bordeaux, and our heart has not moved far from its borders ever since. Take a trip with us down memory lane and, in the process, back to the future; you’ll enjoy the ride.

WINEMAKER SIMON NUNNS
With three decades of devoted toil and a cabinetful of awards under their belt, Coopers Creek have fashioned themselves a formidable reputation within the upper echelons of New Zealand winemaking. Over the years they have come and gone on our shelves as their focus between local and international markets has shifted, and we have to say we’re thrilled to once again have them firmly ensconced within our stores.
COOPERS CREEK SV BELL-RINGER GISBORNE
$19.99
With their longstanding love of innovation, Coopers Creek have led the charge on many fronts, not least the development of a number of intriguing varieties that have responded favourably to our cooler climate. The likes of Viognier, Albariño, Arneis, Grüner Veltliner, Marsanne and Montepulciano are relatively new varieties for New Zealand, and if the early signs are anything to go by, these are heading for the podium.
A white variety that thrives in Spain’s north-western appellation of Rias Baixas and parts of Portugal, the fruit for this is all Gisborne, courtesy of Doug and Delwyn Bell. The wine itself comes across pure and fresh, with delightful hints of citrus and peach. Committed fans of the Spanish expressions, we’re delighted to find Albariño feeling so at home in this part of the world.

The two decades leading up to the end of the 20th century were exciting times, with the New Zealand Government in the early 1980s finally allowing retailers to sell imported wines, in the process giving Glengarry the opportunity to tap into a whole new world.
Ah, Black Tower; it came in those ultra-classy ceramic bottles sporting heraldic imagery that simply reeked of finesse. Well, that’s what we thought in our twenties anyway. Germany’s biggest-selling wine export, Black Tower has these days reinvented and upgraded itself, converting to glass and putting out a range of single varietal styles, among them Rivaner, Riesling, rosé and Pinots Grigio and Noir. Here, we feature their alcoholreduced range, 5.5% abv and 55 calories per 125ml; just the thing, then, for the modern-era, health-conscious approach to life.
Raised in a culture with a progressive attitude more in tune with the growing number of discerning local wine drinkers, the third generation of Glengarry’s Jakicevich family became actively involved in managing the burgeoning retail empire, throwing their enthusiasm for all things vinous into the development of an environment more in tune with the global sensibilities that existed beyond our shores. Within this setting sat a number of iconic brands, each shedding its own unique light upon the times and leaving behind some fond memories in the process. Some of these have made a return – adjusted to a new market, with their glory not in the least diminished – to strut their stuff to a whole new audience. We welcome them back.

Since its return to our shelves in sleek new livery, customers have been waxing lyrical about the last time they drank Mateus rosé. Its origins date back to 1942, when Fernando Guedes set out to put Portugal on the vinous map from his small family winery, Sogrape Vinhos, which rose by the end of the eighties to become the largest wine producer in Portugal. The centrepiece of his agenda was the ubiquitous Mateus, the first wine to attain true global notoriety, and today boasting a presence in more than 125 countries. Salvador Guedes, grandson of Fernando, explains: ‘Our challenge is to sustain the Mateus as we pass it from generation to generation, and that’s why every so often we make subtle changes to the bottle.’ Regardless of outer appearances, the unique essence of this iconic wine remains unchanged.
MATEUS ROSÉ
$9.99

Fresh, seductive, the Mateus is a bona fide classic – namedropped by rockstars and stockpiled by despots – with an intense but refined bouquet and all the exuberance of a young wine. It is slightly more frizzante and a little less sweet these days, as it attempts to engage with the modern preference for a drier tipple. At 11% alcohol, it’s refreshing and well worth a revisit.

Alongside Mateus back then was Deinhard, a benchmark wine when German Riesling was an obsession in London that made its way to our own shores. Founded in 1794 by Johann Friedrich Deinhard, the company is nothing if not a survivor; indeed, from its inception war seems to have been a constant test of the company’s resilience. By 1900 it had become the largest wine and sparkling wine company in Germany. Almost destroyed by the ravages of WWII, the company rebuilt and has survived to recently launch a new, expanded range to accommodate the aspirations of a 21st-century clientele.

POL ROGER MATEUS: THE WAY IT WAS
Introducing new wines and innovative ideas has always been a hallmark of Glengarry. By the mid-1980s, the number of New Zealand and Australian brands had increased substantially, so in order to provide a benchmark of sorts, Glengarry introduced the popular Australian sparkler, Angas Brut, to the New Zealand palate. This proved to be a stepping stone on the way to Europe and the glorious mystique of France’s Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne regions.

Plump, fleshy and opulent, the new Charles is a triumph: With a complex and voluptuous nose, it dispenses its riches as warm rivers of sun-drenched fruits (mango, apricot, plum), nutty nuances of pistachio and almond, and layers of creamy texture. A tremendous wine.

CRAF T PIONEERS
THE STOKE TEAM, DEAN AND EMMA McCASHIN FRONT LEFT
DEAN AND TERRY McCASHIN
Craft beer production and the emergence of micro-breweries has been on an upward curve for the last decade, but the situation some thirty years ago was quite different; beer production was restricted to just two giant breweries. Enter former All Black Terry McCashin, a Picton publican who could not find a beer he wanted to drink, or serve to his customers. With nothing else in the offing, Terry decided to produce his own. The first hurdle Terry had to overcome was red tape; in fifty years, no-one had applied for a licence to brew beer, and the only person who knew about the procedures and documentation had died. In 1981, however, with licence finally in hand, The McCashin Brewery opened in Stoke, Nelson, making itself at home in the old Rochdale Cider factory which the family had purchased. Under head brewer Jim Pollitt, McCashin’s Mac beers were naturally produced using only malts, hops and yeast. The resulting brews – produced over a 12-week period and matured to perfection – proved to be exceedingly popular. In time, the Mac brand changed hands and production moved to the North Island. The McCashin family have remained in the game, however, with Terry’s son Dean and his wife Emma reopening the historic Stoke brewery, from where they produce their award-winning Rochdale ciders and a premium range of Stoke craft beers. The beers are batched brewed from traditional McCashin family recipes, using pure Palaeo water, Nelson hops, premium malts and bespoke yeast, with no artificial colouring or additives. The innovation that is the hallmark of the McCashin family is very much to the fore in the Stoke brewery, which boasts a 100-litre, temperature-controlled pilot plant where new beer styles can be developed. The superb Stoke beers created by the current McCashin generation pay a fitting tribute to Terry’s legacy.

BO As imported wine started to flow into NZ, Glengarry led the charge, jumping into Bordeaux En Primeur as far back as 1985; and we have been blazing that trail ever since, in the process accumulating a wealth of experience and understanding as to what – and what not – to do. Looking back at our first offer is quite revealing:

VAL DELLE ROSE
PASQUA VENETO
BRAND
SOAVE CLASSICO DOC 2012
$13.99 The Val delle Rose estate is located at Poggio la Mozza in southern Tuscany’s Maremma area, a beautiful coastal region that is home to great wines like Sassicia and Ornellaia. The southern part of Tuscany is dramatically different to the north, remaining relatively unspoilt. When the Cecchi family first invested in Maremma in 1996, they started with a mere 25ha of poorly maintained vineyards, which they have assiduously replanted and replenished, adding on new vineyards to finally cover an impressive 90ha. Val delle Rose is the newest of their four properties, an on-site winery soon to be completed. The Tuscan Maremma is one of the new frontiers of quality Italian viticulture, its climatic characteristics very favourable to cultivation. From Maremma, the family produce Vermentino and Morellino di Scansano.

CASE OF 6 $18.99 A BOTTLE Incubated within the warm coastal climes of Maremma, this is 85% Vermentino fruit with a 15% boost of Sauvignon Blanc. Like some pleasure-seeking beach fanatic, Vermentino loves the heat, but needs a little sea breeze to keep the burn down and everything in check. Aged in wood for nine months, this is soft and full, yet with a crisp backbone of refreshing acidity; it’s actually rather wonderful. Try it with fish, risotto or, even better, a bit of both.

DOMAINE
ROMANIN
LAROCHE SOUTH OF FRANCE
$16.99 Domaine Romanin is located in Burgundy in the village of Fuissé, right at the heart of the famous vineyards of Pouilly-Fuissé, where the domaine’s Vervier Family are now into their fifth generation of winegrowing. Unsurprisingly, tradition plays a key part in Denis Vervier’s vinous strategies as he goes about crafting his exemplary and authentic expressions, with sustainable viticulture, manual harvesting, time-tested cellar techniques and scrupulous attention to detail all key components. The vines are between 30 and 70 years old and enjoy a south/southeastern exposure that is highly conducive to ripening, with the clay and limestone soils typical of the region bestowing their own unique characteristics on the Chardonnay fruit via fruity and floral nuances. There is, particularly with the blended Pouilly-Fuissés, a skill in the assemblage that sets this area of Burgundy apart.

Chardonnays from the south of Burgundy may not have the cachet of, say, Môntrachet in the north, but neither do they have the price tag. Yet, as is clear from this thrilling expression, wines from the limestone soils of the Mâcon and from arguably its finest vineyards, those of Pouilly-Fuissé, can hold their heads high among their more noted cousins from the north. This deliciously buttery expression is a delightful balance of strength and sensitivity, integrating an elegantly restraining minerality into its hedonistic combination of honeysuckle, fruit and cream.

FINCA NUEVA
FINCA NUEVA RIOJA
TEMPRANILLO 2011
$19.99 Finca Nueva is the younger sibling of Rioja’s highly respected and almost mythical Allende winery, the creation of one of Spain’s finest winemakers, Miguel Ángel de Gregorio, and his sister Mercedes. Finca Nueva was created as a device to shrug aside the constraints of Riojan tradition and allow the talented and influential Miguel Ángel a wider scope for his skills. The winery is based on 20 hectares of vines in Briones that are not used for Allende. While the Allende wines are serious in nature – tannic wines derived from vines immersed in ironrich clay – the Finca Nueva expressions are fruitier and more immediately accessible, grown on largely calcareous soils and crafted with a new generation of wine drinkers in mind.
89814
CASE OF 6 $18.99 A BOTTLE Part of the Allende stable and 100% Tempranillo, a searingly modern Rioja with a silky succulence and super savouriness. Poured by glass tumbler in the tapas bars on Calle de Laurel, Logroño’s famous tapas street. Great value everyday wine.

TIM ADAMS
CLARE VALLEY
PINOT GRIS 2013
This family owned and operated winery is located in South Australia’s Clare Valley, with its wines produced exclusively from Clare Valley fruit. Tim Adams began his career in 1975 as a cellar hand at the Stanley Wine Company, mentored there by revered Australian wine industry pioneer Mick Knappstein and rising by 1982 to the position of winemaker. In 1985 Tim and his wife, Pam Goldsack, formed a partnership with local coopers Bill and Jill Wray. In 1986 the first wines under the Adams and Wray label were released, but the following year the partnership was dissolved, with Tim and Pam taking full control of the renamed Tim Adams Wines. In the ensuing decades Tim Adams Wines have, via much hard work and dedication, emerged as one of Clare Valley’s leading producers, with Tim still at the helm as chief winemaker and owner. The wines are characterised by their elegance and sense of place, and they are the regular recipients of global awards and accolades.
