Although not quite up to the halcyon heights of the last one, it has been quite a decent summer so far, an ideal time to get out with the family and enjoy a barbeque or two. A month or so more of this fine weather to go, I’m hoping, so bring it on! Our March wineletter is packed with loads of interesting stuff. Our featured Titanic Trio – Marlborough’s Isabel Vineyard, Jackson Estate and Lake Chalice – can all point to longstanding reputations for pioneering excellence within our primary wine producing region. Just in time for St Patrick’s Day we usher in a brand-new Irish cider and an Irish whisky. It’s also time for the always-anticipated Penfolds Bin release, and they have, this year, something new to talk about. You’ll find inside, too, Waipara Hills’ latest Equinox releases, plus our splendid collection from Burgundy; and by the way, I recently purchased a very special barrel of Tennessee whiskey while in the States! And so we arrive at an introduction to our function spaces and catering services: The Dida’s Jervois Rd team have ramped up the catering recently, and for those in the know, we have a fantastic catering menu that includes everything from cheese platters to antipasto selections to crafted canapés, all available for your next dinner party at home, in the office, on the boat or wherever. The Dida’s team also provide the catering for a selection of function spaces at Glengarry Victoria Park; whether your event is for 10 or for 200, we have a space to suit. Check out our website and the video on it for more details. PRODUCTION: GRAEME GASH, LIZ WHEADON, MICHAEL CHAPPORY, HELENA KARLBOM, SYLVIE WHINRAY. PRINTED BY IMAGE CENTRE

CASE OF 12 $13.99 A BOTTLE
Talented winemaker Simon Nunns has a well-honed sense of humour. Nothing funny here though – this is seriously superb. No surprise, really, that it took gold at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards. Everything you’d look for in a Riesling: green apple, Myer lemon, a hint of white flowers, all dusted with a delicate chalky nuance. The palate flows beautifully, with just the right amount of acidity to hold the succulent fruit together. Coopers Creek always did (and still do) have the know-how to produce a classicly elegant Riesling with the ability to age gracefully.

PENFOLDS March heralds the release of Penfolds’ iconic Bin range. This year they also celebrate 170 years since Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold planted the first vines at Magill. Today, Penfolds are lauded the world over for the quality and consistency of their wines. Former Chief Winemaker Max Schubert pioneered the innovative concept of multi-regional blending to create the legendary Grange, arguably Australia’s greatest red. This process gave birth to the Bin Series; a multi-regional and skilfully blended range using the best fruit from the finest vineyards to maintain a consistent, high-quality ‘house style’ for each category. The Penfolds Bin portfolio includes some of Australia’s most celebrated and highly sought-after wines.

ISABEL VINEYARD MARLBOROUGH
PINOT GRIS 2013
$21.99
10896
CASE OF 6 $20.99 A BOTTLE Cousin to the mercurial Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, also requires careful management in the vineyard, a concept the fastidious Isabels are more than at home with. Dispensing elegant mineral notes, this spills its wonderfully aromatic nose of spicetinged white peach, ginger and rose petals across a lush, creamy palate of pears and stonefruit.
One of Marlborough’s largest family-owned wineries, the Isabel Vineyard was established by Michael and Robyn Tiller in 1982. The Tillers initially operated as contract growers supplying the likes of Cloudy Bay, but their inevitable progression into winemaking met with sensational results, their very first release, a Pinot Noir, taking out a gold medal. Today, Isabel is very much a family affair, with Michael and Robyn’s four children and son-in-law, winemaker Carlos Orgiles Ortega, all actively involved. With the vineyards managed on sustainable and organic principles, the Isabel wines are 100% estate grown and made with fastidious attention to detail, right down to the inhouse bottling. The same philosophy is applied to their second-tier wines, which reside under the Dr Renwick label and are produced off younger vines. The winery’s entire range is crafted with extreme care, with all the wines tipping their hats in a terroir salute to their Marlborough origins.

HOMESTEAD VINEYARD
JACKSON ESTATE SHELTER BELT For more than three decades, the pioneering Jackson Estate has been recognised as one of Marlborough’s premium producers of both quality fruit and exceptional fine wines. The enterprise is a testament to the vision and determination of the Stichbury and Jackson families who have farmed the land in the Wairau River plains at Jacksons Road for more than 160 years. The giant gum tree, Grey Ghost, that graces the Jackson Estate labels was planted in 1867 by John Jackson’s greatgrandmother, Alice. The vineyards are meticulously managed via a sustainable, lowcropping regime to provide both optimum fruit and varietal integrity, augmented at the other end of the business by the installation in 2003 of a new high-tech winery that ensures control over all aspects of the winemaking process. Head Winemaker Matt Patterson-Green has guided the winemaking team for almost a decade now. He explains: ‘Our philosophy is to produce wines that truly reflect the variety and the land that gave them birth.’

Velvet textures and a lingering aftertaste leave their calling cards.
Named in recognition of John Stichbury’s contribution to the company. Fruit parcels from three vineyards were individually cool fermented and lees aged prior to blending. What can we say about Chris Gambitisis? One of NZ wine’s true characters, Gambo looms larger than life, and we reckon his favourite interests outside of wine are Music, Motorbikes and Talking, and not necessarily in that order. This gregarious former restaurateur and his ex-police detective windsurfing mate Phil Binnie have come a long way. Gambo: ‘Phil and I enjoyed drinking and exploring wine styles, but what we really wanted to do was make wine, so we decided to buy a vineyard.’ Aided by the talented Matt Thomson, Gambo and Phil went and transformed their initial 11.5 hectare investment, the Falcon Vineyard, into a sprawling enterprise involving a number of vineyard sites and boasting a legion of fans the world over. Gambo: ‘Our philosophy is to make the best possible wine, so our vineyards are sustainably managed and we adopt a minimalist winemaking approach to let the purity of the fruit shine through.’

You’ll find the Kepplers Cider Company in the historic township of Midleton (home to the largest pot-still in the world) in Ireland’s County Cork. It’s a relatively young wee thing, having emerged into the world as recently as 2009, but the quality of Kepplers’ output has established them as one of Ireland’s premium cider producers. No apple juice concentrate here, folks, it’s all locally sourced, freshly crushed apples, an approach that provides that extra kick to accompany the singular flavours.

SINGLE Stephen and Hayley Plowman named their brand in tribute to the Bavarian Hallertau region famed for its hops, but at that point, proudly bearing their Riverhead roots and a well-honed sense of humour, they veer off into exuberant Westie mode via their fearlessly unique, smartly-executed brews. Staunch believers in purity of expression, the beer styles are about generous aromas, vibrant flavours and enriching characters, meticulously hand-brewed from the purest natural ingredients, with all of the Hallertau models lovingly championed regardless of their commercial viability. Here, we feature the famed First Four (sounds presidential), which began life as humble numbers; pr but fear not, those of you who suck at maths, they’ve bu named them too. This quintessential quartet is best na enjoyed well-chilled rather than icy-cold, so as to en fully appreciate the depth of their flavours. fu

A carefully-judged blend of 75% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Nero and 10% Pinot Bianco, Ca’ del Bosco’s prestige cuvée is reminiscent of a blanc de blancs champagne. The finish is dry, the wine incredibly smart.

CÔTES DU RHÔNE
2011
$16.99 Château Routas is a spectacularly picturesque estate in the heart of Provence, lodged midway between the French Riviera and the foothills of the Alps. Overlooking miles of wooded hillsides and rivers, it is surrounded by tiny medieval villages hugging steep cliffs. The soil can vary dramatically, resulting in small, randomlyshaped vineyards, some as red as crushed brick, others home to crumbling grey limestone mixed with bright red stones that bleach in the hot summer sun. At 1,300 feet above sea level, the elevation is among the appellation’s highest, providing cool nights that slow the ripening of the grapes and contribute to the complexity of the wines. Farmed sustainably, the estate has 135 of its 642 acres under vine. Routas has always had a strong reputation for its Provence rosé, now complemented by a range of excellent red and white wines.

PEREL ADA Castillo Perelada, one of the grandest landmarks of the Empordà region, has had an association with the production of wine for a very long time. The Perelada castle houses Spain’s largest privatelyheld library, within which parchments detail winemaking practices that date back to the Middle Ages. Perelada’s modern renaissance began in 1923, when Miguel Mateu purchased the property and revitalised its wine production. His legacy lives on today under the stewardship of grandson Javier Suqué. This is one of Spain’s most significant producers, the wines a scintillating blend of centuries’ worth of knowledge and cuttingedge modernism. They have, indeed, almost become standard issue at royal and government functions, such is their consistent quality and the esteem in which they are held.

An incredible wine from the formidable Nicolas Potel; for a first step in the Burgundian quality stakes, it’s a big’un, boasting richly generous flavours. Comes with a waxencased cap – just put the corkscrew straight through it and pull this otherworldly entity into yours. Magic.
Up at the serious end, it’s aromatically clean and clear with a delicate touch of wood. The flavours are elegantly rich and medium weighted. The soft, lush red berryfruit and fine-grained tannins echo with subtle, stony notes. Recommended drinking time is from 2017 onwards.

Managed these days by Bernard Gros, the wines of this domaine are traditional in style, rich and full bodied with clean, precise flavours. Bright but deeply flavoured red fruits, supple and silky tannins and an oak presence that plays an unobtrusive but critical part. Great value.
Burgundian Chardonnay at its best. A subtle influence of wood lies beneath the restrained nose of fresh, spice caressed pears and apples, while the delicate, mineral infused flavours slide in leisurely fashion across a silken palate. Long, refined, beautifully balanced, cellar it.
