ROCKBURN
CENTRAL OTAGO
ten BARRELS PINOT NOIR 2012
$89.00
13162
case of 6 $85.00 a bottle Rockburn’s top-of-the-line offering, an elegant and scintillating Pinot Noir sourced from their Gibbston Back Road Vineyard, with only the top ten barrels selected. No fining, no filtering, this is one for the cellar, a superbly aromatic surge of black cherries and violets, earthiness and understatement. Sensual, supple, savoury.
For all their modest beginnings as a three-hectare hobby vineyard, these guys have managed over time to establish a highly credible rep, and really, there’s been no looking back from that first gold medal for their first-ever Pinot Noir. Resident genius in the winemaking department is the ultra-talented Malcolm Rees-Francis, a gent who looks as if he’s not long out of uni but who has in fact been at the helm now since 2006; so a while in the saddle. He is a big fan of letting the fruit and its terroir do the talking, and by the look of the awards cabinet, he’s got the mix about right.
ROCKBURN
And it’s not just the Pinot that’s kicking it, their Stolen Kiss rosé, for instance, is incredibly popular and sells out in a minute, leaving in its wake each year a bevy of frustrated punters (clue: it’s instore and online right now, so be in while you can). In fact, the highest quality extends throughout the entire portfolio, with excellence across the board the primary objective.

The craft brewer’s biggest enemy? Light. Yep; since their product is invariably as pure as the driven snow, it’s particularly susceptible to the ravages of the rays. Hence a shorter shelf life (possibly why brewers seem to lurk in dark sheds at the bottom of a garden). The good news: we’ve sourced cans from some of the high fliers. These babies are as fresh as it comes, thanks to their double-crimped seals – the nearest thing you’ll get to standing in the brewery itself while holding a bevvy straight from the tank.

la chevaliÈre chardonnay 2013
$15.99
48572
case of 6 $14.99 a bottle So much time on the clock; you can literally taste the understanding painstakingly accumulated over centuries of toil, the knowledge passed down through family lines. The brilliant Jean-François Bordet is the 13th generation of a family that have been producing wine in the commune of Maligny since the 18th century, with records showing their roots in Chablis stretching back as far as 1590. Bordet has introduced his own touches to the family recipe, installing up-to-date tech and strict viticultural regimes to accompany the timetested traditions. This, then, is classic, clean, mineral-edged Chablis at its finest, with Séguinot-Bordet’s signature Chablis coming off the Premier cru vineyard Fourchaume, which they partly own. With the escalation in quality has come increased demand, to the extent that S-B have had to start allocating their elegantly expressive, benchmark wines.
Laroche’s mastery of Chardonnay shines through in this stylish, fruit-driven Languedoc-Roussillon. Ripe stonefruit aromas exude spicy mineral notes onto a generously flavoured wine with a creamy texture and a fine, persistent, citrus-edged finish.

Rich and elegant, with notes of honeyed flowers and spice, creamy textures and a fresh mineral finish.

89827
case of 12 $16.99 a bottle Peruvian-born Luciano de Murrieta founded the bodega that bears his name in 1852 near the southern tip of the Rioja Alta, in the middle of the beautiful Ygay Estate, a 300-hectare vineyard that provides the fruit for the entire Marqués de Murrieta portfolio. One of Rioja’s two winemaking pioneers, Luciano studied in Bordeaux, and upon establishing his own enterprise in Rioja he introduced the practices he’d learnt there. Since 1983 the bodega has been managed by the Cebrián-Sagarriga family. Proudly traditional (the wines are aged in wood for a minimum of two years), their approach combines methods accumulated over 160+ years with the benefits of modern technology. The vineyard is managed on a low-yield regime to ensure top-quality fruit, a key factor in the excellence of the expressions produced by this iconic Spanish winery.
With a pronounced yeasty aroma and rock salt on the nose, the palate is beautifully balanced and quite weighty. It’s remarkably fresh, stone-dry but packed with flavour; a wonderful accompaniment to all manner of tapa combinations.
