Good grief, is that the time? Christmas is nigh upon us again, with the promise of summer trailing dazzlingly in its wake. Which means sun and decks and a glass in hand. What’s not to like about that? Which also means it’s time to start getting prepped. With that in mind, we present our annual round-up of brilliant buys as selected and championed by you, our customers, over the preceding year. In other words, this is your rock-solid and road-tested buying guide for the festive season and beyond. After all, thousands of local purchasers with a nose for a bargain can’t be wrong. Can they? No, indeed they cannot. We also have a section devoted to all things sparkling, featuring an initiative by a group of producers within our most significant vinous region that goes under the name Méthode Marlborough. It is accompanied by a superb selection of sparkling wines from the rest of the world. And check it out below: In the New Zealand winemaking pantheon, as humble and unassuming as he might be (and he is), Brookfields’ Peter Robertson is one of the greats. His Platinum expressions are about as rare as a Dodo’s egg, and we’re delighted that 1) Peter decided that the vintage was good enough to warrant a Platinum release, and 2) we were able to get hold of some! A great wine from an exemplary winemaker – we don’t have a lot, and what we do have won’t hang about, so snooze, and you’ll more than likely lose. The trees are flowering, dem boids is singin’, there’s a billowing lightness to the days and the shimmering warmth is on its way. Cannot wait.

HIGHLAND MERLOT CABERNET 2014
$39.99
Peter Robertson’s Platinum label is reserved for his very top-tier, Merlot-dominant wines, with the 2014 Highland only the fifth to be released since 1989. It is a celebration of a superb Hawkes Bay vintage. Opulent and inviting fragrances and flavours of black fruits and plums are garnished with new French and American oak, vanillin and spice. You could drink it now, but it will continue to develop for another 8-10 years.

AN AMERICAN IN NELSON
RIMU GROVE Some might say that Patrick Stowe is a long way from home. Others would opine that he is finally right where he’s meant to be. Back in the 1860s, his great-great-something-or-other grandfather owned a vineyard in the Napa Valley. This latent winemaking DNA was awakened while Patrick was attending a polytechnic course where, at age 19, he made his first wine. Graduating with a degree in biochemistry and microbiology, he continued to pursue his passion for winemaking in the Napa Valley. In the early 1990’s Patrick toured New Zealand, falling for Nelson’s Bronte Peninsular. He returned to buy 7 hectares there and in 1995 he established Rimu Grove. His philosophy was simple: do everything it takes to get the most out of the vineyard – hands on, plenty of hard work, very little machinery but loads of buckets. Patrick loves great Burgundy, and believes if any country in the world was tailor-made for Pinot Noir, it’s New Zealand, with its intense sunshine, special soils and long growing period so perfect for ripening grapes: “The vineyard has a temperate, maritime microclimate with high sunshine hours. We don’t use machinery in the vineyard; it is entirely hand managed to maintain low cropping levels and all the fruit is hand-picked.”

CASE OF 12 $24.99 A BOTTLE Harvested from Moutere clay gravels and Waimea plains vineyards, with the wine cool fermented in stainless steel to preserve varietal integrity. Displaying a nose of citrus and honeysuckle, the full and luscious palate is characterised by its elegance and purity of fruit, signing off in a flurry of racy acidity and citrus nuances.
Patrick Stowe’s obsession with excellence is well displayed in his elegant, top-tier Pinot. Velvet textures and well integrated acidity contribute to the quality. The finish is expansive, long and gently drying, with plenty of fine-grained tannins. Seductive.

Méthode Marlborough is a society launched in 2013 and comprised of a number of highly-regarded Marlborough producers who collectively pursue a vision not dissimilar to that of Champagne’s vaunted houses. Their objective is to nurture the unique terroir that is the Marlborough winegrowing district, and to establish a set of standards around the production of sparkling wine within its borders. Variations in quality come down to winemaking techniques, so here we’re talking the second fermentation occurring in the bottle, followed by an intricate riddling and disgorging process. All of these wines are aged for a minimum of 18 months before disgorging takes place to allow the complexity of the flavours to develop. The group is dedicated to promoting wines made only from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, the trio of varieties recognised as the benchmark for sparkling wine producers around the world. Why do we care? Because this is all about increasing quality levels and protecting and developing our national assets for a global market.

One of the originals and the leading lights of NZ’s craft beer revolution, Tuatara Brewery, are this year celebrating their fifteenth birthday. OMG, they’re teenagers! In 2000 Carl Vasta, engineer by profession and home brewer by compulsion, established Tuatara in the hills above Waikanae, building it by hand from modified you-name-it. It didn’t take long before his superb range of ales, porters and pilsners, with their unique Kiwi-esque twists, became a big hit. Since those early days Tuatara has established an impressive reputation and are looking much flasher in the stainless steel department. Needless to say, there have been awards. In addition to their core range of classic styles, Tuatara also produce a brilliant selection of New World styles, Belgium classics and a series of nifty seasonals & one-offs. Thinking outside the box? That’s what they do.

CHABLIS In the 1980s rivers of inauthentic white averageness from all over the globe were labelled Chablis, some without ever having seen a Chardonnay grape, let alone a lifetime growing up in Kimmidgerian soil. Not these days. The oyster-shelled terroir that is one of the key components in Chablis’ unique profile is now protected by law, as enshrined and important to the wines as the marginal and northerly aspect of Chablis’ location. Only one variety counts here, and that is Chardonnay, which thrives in the same chalk soils that run through Champagne. Chablis is Chardonnay in one of its purest expressions. If you are an exponent of big, buttery versions, then Burgundy will be more your thing than the pure, deliciously lean styles to be found here.

GRANT BURGE The Burge family have been associated with winemaking in the Barossa Valley for five generations, so some decent time on the clock, you might say. It began in 1855 with John Burge, an immigrant from England, whose son Meshach made the first wine back in 1865 and established the family preoccupation with winemaking. Current champion of this family obsession is Grant Burge, who as past winemaker for a number of high-profile outfits has won an array of awards. In 1988, together with his wife Helen, he established the Grant Burge Winery. Grant believes that vineyards are the key to it all, and that they must be carefully managed by selecting the varieties that best suit their particular soils and climatic conditions. Grant personally oversees every aspect of production, from the vineyard through to the winemaking. His control of a diversity of prime sites and his profound knowledge of what they can deliver provides him with the ability to craft a superlative range of wines.
