Here's to NZ Music The guitar in this photograph was made in Auckland, New Zealand in 1974. It was crafted by Peter Madill in his workshop in Durham Lane. I used to go in there sometimes just to smell the wood. Instruments like this, if they’re cared for and played regularly, age gracefully over time. As has our national music scene. The story of New Zealand’s musical journey is an intrepid one. Some of the decades gone by were challenging times for musicians, especially those wanting to share their own songs. Musical oases winked in and out across the Kiwi landscape. No internet to learn off; instead, you dragged the needle repeatedly across your treasured vinyl to work out just how that guitar riff went. No digital, no bedroom studios, no uploading; but plenty of reel-to-reel tape running in the background. The doors into the only recording studios were few and far between, and fiercely guarded. If you could get inside, their gatekeepers might just end up recording something else over your precious multi-track tapes. There was nothing quite as exciting as a team-effort mixing session; everyone on their allotted sliders, nobody wanting to mess up their part before the mix got to the end. Otherwise it was back to the beginning – no automation! Record releases from musical giants over the ocean were events infused with anticipation. New Zealand releases were, well, gobsmacking in their rarity. To hear yourself on local radio was astounding. And in the face of all that slog, dreaming their dreams, people put themselves out there anyway. Because music drew them like nothing else could, as it continues to today. When it comes to viral outreach, Covid has nothing on music. And just look at us now. Immerse yourself.

Rockburn
Pinot Noir's Southern Stars
Established in 1991, Central Otago's Rockburn Winery won gold at the Air NZ Wine Awards for their very first Pinot Noir release, and from that point on there has been no looking back. The fruit is hand-harvested off the company's Parkburn and Gibbston Valley vineyards. Each site contributes its own unique characteristics that provide chief winemaker Malcolm Rees-Francis with a palette of distinctive flavour profiles from which he masterfully produces Rockburn's award-winning wines. As Malcolm puts it: 'My philosophy is to respect the fruit, listen to what it is trying to say and help it to do that. We don't manipulate or use finings; our aim is to produce harmonious wines that reflect their unique terroir.' Rockburn's outstanding record is not confined to their headlining Pinot Noir, but extends throughout the entire portfolio. However it is their accomplished way with the elusive Noir grape that has heads turning the world over.

Occasionally, the nuances of site and season conspire to generate fruit of exceptional character that is far too interesting to blend away. Rockburn choose instead to bottle it as a single vineyard expression of terroir, distinct from their estate bottlings. Crafted for immediate enjoyment, this rare wine can also be cellared. With no animal fining products, it’s a sure-fire vegan hit as well.

Lava Lords
Growing vines beside a f idget y volc ano One wonders how Terrazze del Etna do longterm strategic planning with any conviction when Sicily's Mount Etna is constantly cascading lava down the slopes at them. Everything is done by hand, with no irrigation other than what drains down off the mountain itself. Thanks to the harsh volcanic ground, the viticulturalist needs to cut the roots of the sometimes century-old vines to stop them growing sideways. Such gritty determination produces a superb collection of warm, vibrant wines offering amazing intensity and length.

We’re joining in the celebration of New Zealand’s surging music scene, still alive and kicking despite everything 2020 threw at it. We’re launching NZ Music Month at our Glengarry Victoria Park store on Thursday the 6th of May from 4:30pm. There’ll be food and drink and all sorts of interesting people hanging about. Via their associate company KBB Music, everybody’s favourite music store, Rockshop, is putting a grand piano and someone to play it in our store for the event, where it will stay for the duration of NZ Music Month as various luminaries pop in to work the keys. Meanwhile, all of our Glengarry stores will be running nuthin’ but Kiwi music for the whole of the month. Starting from the 3rd of May, the champs at Rockshop are donating one instrument a week to be won, and we’re not talking tambourines! All you have to do to get into the draw is tell us via our Facebook or Instagram your favourite New Zealand artist or band, and you’re in. There’ll be a Vinyl Market at Glengarry Victoria Park on Saturday the 22nd of May between 11:00am and 4:00pm, and during the month we’ll be conducting video tastings combined with live music. Also on Saturday the 22nd of May, from 4:00pm there’ll be a free pop-up live music event.

NOBODY'S HERO
PINOT NOIR 2019
Framingham is a boutique winery and aromatic specialist, hand-crafting wines from some of the oldest and best vineyards that Marlborough has to offer. Accredited as an environmentally sustainable vineyard, the wines are made to evoke the full range of flavours and nuances the terroir offers – minerality, mouth-filling texture, complex flavours, and elegant structure. Framingham have established a reputation for producing outstanding aromatic varietal wines and their Rieslings are a New Zealand benchmark. Music looms large in the Winery's universe, with the Framingham Harvest Concert an annual sellout where up-and-coming Kiwi bands take the stage. The winery band and music fanatics, Renwick Nudes, habitually pick up their instruments when parenthood isn't taking priority. And the grapes, we're guessing.

Disregard the self-deprecating moniker; this is indeed heroic: a soft, fleshy, fruity and flavoursome Pinot Noir. Lush, rounded, vibrant, this is the wine the Framingham crew drink at their annual Harvest Concert.

Vintage Port
Your ver y own on-the-spot vintage por t cellar Making up less than one percent of the total port produced, vintage ports require time in the bottle to mature and express their full character. Made from grapes from a single vintage, they are bottled after two to three years in wood, and can reside in the cellar for decades before reaching their zenith. They are made from grapes off the finest vineyards, with only the best years declared a vintage. Let’s face it, aging these wines in your cellar can take a bit of time, which is why we’ve cut to the chase and assembled an instant 12-bottle vintage port collection from two of the Douro’s finest: Taylors – the archetypal port house established in 1693 and the benchmark for vintage port – and Fonseca, the only port house to have four 100-point wines. Not only do you get a substantial discount off the retail price, but you’ll also receive a Coravin wine preservation system valued at $700.00 to keep your opened bottles in great condition.

Schloss Vollrads has been in continuous operation for longer than any other wine estate, with one of its vineyards mentioned as far back as 850 years ago. Records found at the estate notate wines being sold to nearby Monks in 1211. And the record book doesn’t close there: the term Kabinett was first used by Schloss Vollrads in 1716, in reference to the winemaker’s top selection from that year, making it the first ever official classification of wine in the world.
Schloss Vollrads
The estate is situated on Germany’s Rhine River in Rheingau. Under the guidance of the recently retired Dr Rowald Hepp, the Schloss Vollrads team have applied a searing focus to just one variety, producing Riesling in its myriad forms and nothing else. Running the whole gamut of styles, 60% of production at Schloss Vollrads is dry, and always has been.
Riesling’s lasting legacy: eight centuries and counting
The wines are elegant and complex, combining the finest soils and climatic conditions with a profound understanding of Riesling and a huge legacy of winemaking nous. All are fermented in stainless steel and made with minimum intervention, harnessing the magic found in the deep and chalky Rheingau soils – warm, mineral-rich and graced with many different layers of loam, sand and gravel as a result of their ocean- and mountain-influenced formation millons of years ago.
T H E P R Ä D I K AT S C A L E Historically, Prädikatswein define the ripeness levels of German wines, displaying a Prädikat, or ripeness designation, on the label. They range from dry to intensely sweet, their designations around increasing sugar levels in the grapes at the time of harvest.
K A B I N E T T | Step One on the sugar content scale. Kabinett wines tend to be lighter and more delicate, and can be anything from dry to sweet in style. S PÄT L E S E |
Spätlese means late harvest, with a later picking time. Richer, broader, more concentrated, though Spätlese too can vary in style from dry to sweet.
A U S L E S E | Adds in another factor: botrytis, aka noble rot, responsible for concentrating grape sugars. The Auslese wines tend to be even more honeyed and bold in style.

Where food and wine are inex tricably entwined Piemonte produces some of Italy’s most interesting and long-lived wines. A treasure trove of culinary delights, it is dotted throughout with eating establishments turning out the most wonderful dishes. Home to Barolo, Barbaresco, truffles and hazelnuts, the predominant red grapes are the indigenous Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto, the whites, Arneis and Moscato. The wines are distinctly regional and oozing with flair. Lovers of Pinot Noir will feel right at home with Nebbiolo, which is bottled in its own right as well as being the variety behind the famed Barolo wines.

PRIMITIVO SALENTO IGT 2019
$15.99
Primitivo
A dark-skinned grape known for its inky, tannic wines, Primitivo's favoured haunt is in Puglia in southern Italy. It initially arrived there from the coastal vineyards of Croatia, and in the early 19th century, showed up in the United States as Zinfandel (yet another association confirmed by DNA analysis) where its success contributed to a global resurgence of interest in Primitivo. No longer relegated solely to blending, the 21st-century variant of Primitivo is now the celebrated grape behind southern Italy's leading wines. Foodwise, one should pair it with dishes exhibiting the richness and substance to accompany Primitivo's relatively restrained but nonetheless muscular nature. This can be anything from roasted meats to strong cheeses, or Eggplant Parmesan to hearty stews.
The Salento region in Puglia is known for its particularly fine Primitivo grapes. A pure, fragrant, fruit-forward expression dominated by jammy black fruit. Try it slightly chilled.

Glengarry Whisky Tour| 2021
Join us at the Glengarry Victoria Park store between 2:30pm and 5:00pm as we put on our tasting hats and fandango our way through Scotland's finest (with honourable mentions from the rest of the world). Unmissable for aficionados and the curious! Here at Glengarry we've had a long love affair with whisky in all its manifestations, from its unassailable spiritual home in Scotland to the 'that-last-statement-can't-be-true' Irish and their 'whiskey' spelling; from the carefully crafted, high-quality Japanese offerings to right here in New Zealand, where boutique Kiwi outfits are putting out their own superb interpretations. While Scotland may currently sit atop the throne, it was in Ireland that everything whisky was originally conceived, with Irish monks returning from their Mediterranean pilgrimages containing the knowledge, skills and techniques of distillation used for perfumery, and the desire to consume these in beverage form. Whatever. The reality is that there is an abundance of singular and fabulous whisky and whiskey creations out there, many of them steeped in history and tradition, with enough going on to pique your interest for years to come.

What do you do, as Ardbeg's Auckland Embassy, when the annual Ardbeg Day, which religiously falls on the same day of the year, is trumped by the mess that is Covid craziness and ships stuck sideways in canals? Let's face it: it's the Scots – the date is immovable. This year, our official Ardbeg Day will be held without the whiskies themselves; they will be, thanks to the backlog tangle, on a boat and still in transit. Hence, in our official capacity, we'll be celebrating Ardbeg Day on Saturday the 5th of June by taking your pre-orders online, and following that up with a new date to get face-to-face with you over the drams on Saturday the 19th of June. Sawmill Matakana’s Sawmill brewery is an hour’s drive north of Auckland. The brewery and ‘smoko’ room sit in idyllic countryside with views of Mt Tamahunga. In 2019 this all went up in smoke due to a fire. Through grit and determination Sawmill rebuilt better than ever, reopening in July 2020. Restored, the brewery is once more enjoyed by many for its food and its exceptional beers. Sawmill are craft beer pioneers. They were one of the first to can craft beer. This was ideal to not only preserve the freshness and quality, but also make it portable enough to take on fishing trips in nearby Omaha Bay. Using quality New Zealand hops and malted barley, they make beer that is true to form and of uncompromising quality. At the heart of Sawmill’s philosophy is their commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility. Solar panels on the roof fulfil most of their energy needs, and they have cut down on use of plastic wrap. Sawmill also recycle the wastewater on their farm as irrigation. Their high standards have been recognised with a B Corp certification. This recognises that they exceed a high standard of social and environmental indicators, and puts them in good company with some of New Zealand's most trusted brands. | TM
