As we shine the spotlight on the intriguing offerings that fall under the banner of Australian wine, you may be thinking: big, ripe and juicy. Think again. We lift the lid on a diversity of new styles and producers with some of the exciting wines that are reshaping the Australian industry. There was a time when big, ripe and juicy wines were right on trend, particularly when held up against the famous 'European restraint'. While the big styles still exist – and they do have their place – these days the market for the unashamedly ample is more fickle, becoming for many producers unprofitable and leading to the demise of some big names. The newly refreshed look we are starting to see is one where the wines display a greater degree of subtlety and nuance, better evoke the intricacies of their particular terroir and successfully champion some of Australia's more unique regions. This change is across the board, with many of the larger, well-established producers right at the vanguard. The family-owned wineries of De Bortoli in the Yarra Valley and Yalumba in the Barossa are just two examples of the latter, both displaying a satisfying degree of fearlessness when it comes to innovation and change. The advent of these emerging styles is being driven by a new generation of younger Australian wine drinkers. Chardonnay proves to be not as popular in that camp, with the more aromatic styles such as Pinot Grigio, Fiano and Moscato taking precedence. With reds, it’s the likes of Tempranillo and Zinfandel that are favoured.
F U N AND EDUCATI ON We’re known for it. It ’s fun

GRANT BURGE
FIFTH GENERATION BAROSSA SHIRAZ
This iconic Australian brand delivers
2018 | $16.99
Fifth generation Grant Burge was the one who took the Burge family name to the wine world, forming the eponymous company with his wife Helen in 1988. His great-great grandfather John Burge immigrated to the Barossa in 1855 from Hillcot in England, so Grant's roots ran deep in the famous wine region, lauded for its vivid varietal flavours. Basing their approach on the belief that the terroir of the hallowed Barossa be given room to speak freely via minimal intervention and careful vineyard management, Grant Burge Wines rapidly became a respected and innovative force in the Australian wine industry.
Same grape variety as our own Syrah, but wonderously different under the Aussie sun. Aromas of raspberry and blackberry with a hint of vanilla, coffee and spice. The palate is full and silky with rich layers of black fruits and blackberry overlaid with subtle peppery notes. A nice touch of spicy sweetness from the oak.
CASE/6 ONLY $15.99 A BOTTLE
One of the largest landowners in the region, the company excels at well made, value for money wines that are rich with flavour and eminently drinkable. And if more confirmation were needed, Grant Burge Wines has been rated a 5-Red Star Winery for 11 years in a row by the James Halliday Australian Wine Companion.

$21.99 |
Big, bold Aussie Shiraz – something of a cliché, but there you have it. While some things have moved on in the Australian playbook, these styles still have their place; they are, after all, what put Australian wine on the map. The wines are toned down a little, perhaps, compared to previous eras, but they are still all about vibrant fruit with lashings of oak, rich, ripe tannins evoking liquid chocolate and a big, in-your-face finish.

ST HALLET T OLD VINE
DE BORTOLI WINEMAKER STE VE WEBBER
We're talking Tempranillo and Grenache, both of which call Spain home. Hence Grenache loves the Australian warmth, requiring enough heat to get ripe, but not so much that it’s jammy. Low in acidity, retaining the little it has is key. Australia has magnificent old-vine Grenache, crafted with quality in mind, picked earlier and with a lower alcohol content, so it's one to go back to. Tempranillo, the rich, dark and spicy variety behind Rioja's high altitude sub-regions, is also right at home in Australia. The blends of Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro are reminiscent of France's Côtes du Rhône styles.

DE BORTOLI
RUTHERGLEN ESTATE ROSÉ 2020
$20.99 |
A modern classic winery with respect for tradition. It's situated in the northeast corner of Victoria, one of the most progressive and diverse viticultural regions in Australia. Dry in style, this is made exclusively from Grenache grapes. The palate is full of soft berry and cherry flavours with a hint of spice from the Grenache. Vegan friendly.
Once a style produced to create more volume or to make something cheap to quaff, Australian rosé has come of age; these days taken more seriously and produced with huge success, it is no longer regarded as a secondary product. Australia's winemakers have progressed from imitating Provence's pale pink expressions to embracing styles more attuned to Australia's vital and vivid environment.

Australian Pinot Noir deserves more attention here than it receives. While we're somewhat spoiled for choice from our own high-achieving regions, it is worth sampling the offerings from across the Tasman, particularly those from the Yarra Valley, Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. Characteristically soft and supple, the top tip for best value has to go to De Bortoli’s Regional Reserve Pinot Noir. Try it with some friends – one thing they won’t guess is the price.

Oratoire St Martin
Mont-Redon's new acquisition comes with kudos RHÔNE VALLEY
The Abeille-Fabre families are owners of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's famed Mont-Redon winery. With Domaine de l’Oratoire Saint-Martin considered the best site in the appellation of Cairanne, Pierre Fabre’s excitement at recently acquiring it cannot be overstated. The appellation itself was recently elevated to Cru status. The Domaine has been farmed organically since the 1990s and biodynamically since the 2000s. Under former owners the Alary brothers, winemaking was very low intervention. Read 'natural'. This is a philosophy that Pierre is excited to continue and explore. 'Possibly the best domaine in the entire Côtes du Rhône-Villages area. The wines are full, intense and concentrated, surprisingly sophisticated. At less than half the price of a top Châteauneuf this domaine offers splendid value for money.' Clive Coates 'One of the Southern Rhone Valley's most conspicuous overachievers, making wines that are far above their humble appellations. They are reasonably priced and qualitatively equivalent to wines selling at two or three times the price.' Robert Parker

Portuguese wine has long played second fiddle to the country's ports. However, the quality and exceptional value they deliver has the world paying attention. Joining the EU in 1986 was a significant turning point, with the quality revolution hitting its straps in the late 1990s. A flood of new investment from both local and foreign sources has changed the face of the Portuguese industry. The varieties are indigenous; the reds tend to be bold, with dark hues and intense fruit characters. They are tannic, with good acidity, and can be long-lived. The whites are generous, rich and full of character. Handy terms; tinto = red; branco = white. The Douro, with its diversity of microclimates, is the most important region for wine production. There, the steep hillside vineyards can vary from 150 to more than 750 metres above the river.

Epicentre of the Renaissance and the flashpoint for so much cultural and artistic brilliance, it overflows with names to light up the imagination. Along with Piedmont, Tuscany has the highest percentage of top-tier DOCG wines in Italy, and is home to the scarlet giants Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The region’s premier variety is Sangiovese, which used to make the ubiquitous Chianti, with the variety’s greatest expression derived from the legendary Brunello clone developed by Montalcino’s Biondi-Santi family.
No one-trick Grigio ponies, those Santa Margheritas – this is a smart Chianti that puts Sangiovese’s luscious red fruit to good use. The palate is deliciously smooth and impeccably structured, with a chalky nature to the fine tannins.

$89.99 $125.00
Benoit Tarlant stated, 'Zero dosage is a trend for the others. For us, it is how we started; we’ve been doing it longer than anyone else.' So what is Zero dosage? After a champagne has aged in the cellars, the sediment (dead yeast cells, or lees) that settle in the bottle are expelled. To do this, the bottle is opened. Before the final closure is put on, a 'liquor' or mix of sugar and wine is added to give the wine its final sweetness level. This is known as the dosage. Zero dosage wines are made without the addition of any dosage; they are in fact bone-dry.

THE GLENLIVET CARIBBEAN RESERVE SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISK Y FINISHED IN CARIBBEAN RUM BARRELS
Glenlivet THE
700ML | $59.99
In their continuing quest to produce new and exciting drams the great Glenlivet of Scotland will leave no stone unturned and no barrel unfilled. From sweet Sauternes casks to Mizunara oak of Japan and everything in between – modern single malts make their way into any number of different woods.
NEW
As part of these explorative and oftentimes delicious endeavours the notion of finishing whisky in ex-rum casks is not exactly a new one, though it is certainly still quite unusual and often expensive. The path for casks to get to the Caribbean, be used for rum, then make their way to Scotland for filling and thence around the globe is not a short or easy journey, even when the world isn’t gripped by a pandemic or having ships parked sideways across critical canals. New to Kiwi shores the Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve is then a triumph both of globalisation and taste. Finished in rum casks and dressed boldly in orange and palm trees the Glenlivet is a tropical sensation, redolent of red apple and ripe banana, finishing bold but velvety smooth. The weather here might still be cold, but try this topped with coconut water or even as the base in a Mai Tai variation and transport yourself to sunny Martinique. | DL

STARWARD Australia, and Tasmania in particular, have been building a thriving whisky industry, with the through-the-roof demand leading to allocations and lofty prices. Flavoursome and lighter in style, these award-winning whiskies deserve your attention whether you sip neat, experiment in cocktails or hit a barbeque with a bottle of Two-Fold and some Tonic. | AS

FOUR PILLARS
OLIVE LEAF GIN 700ML | $79.99
Four Pillars
Australia's award-winning gin geniuses go savoury Even though awards aren’t the goal of Four Pillars, it sure is nice to win some every now and again. Especially when you are International Gin Producer of the Year, back-to-back at the International Wine and Spirits Competition 2019 and 2020. And now their famous Olive Leaf Gin has just won the 2021 Best Signature Botanical at the World Gin Awards. Olive Leaf Gin is Four Pillars' new savoury gin, five delicious years in the making. It’s textural, bright and perfect for a Martini or a Spanish-inspired gin & tonic. This modern classic has used three types of cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil and olive leaf tea, from the world-class groves of Cobram Estate in Victoria. They then added Mediterranean botanicals like rosemary, bay leaf, and orris root, finished off with native Australian macadamia nuts and lemon myrtle. Founded in 2013, Four Pillars Gin is now one of Australia’s most famous craft distilleries. They’re based in Healesville in Melbourne’s Yarra Valley, and are known for bringing a modern and innovative Australian take on gin to the world. All of their different expressions are based on their Four Pillars: magnificent copper pot stills (Wilma, Jude and Eileen), pristine Yarra water, exotic & native botanicals and a massive amount of care, love and attention to detail every step of the way. | RM

Parrotdog & The Three Matts turn 10
Craft Beer
A decade gone in the blink of an eye – Parrotdog are celebrating their 10th birthday of brewing approachable, award-winning cold brews for thirsty Kiwis all across New Zealand. Nice. Ten years ago Parrotdog brewed the Bitterbitch IPA that began the three Matts' journey in NZ’s craft beer scene, teaching them that satisfying results can emerge from difficult beginnings. From this, Parrotdog’s brewing mantra began to ferment: quality and simplicity realised in a fantastic array of uncomplicated yet diverse beers; a little something for you, me, everyone. Just as the simpler days of the 1970s may be long gone, so are the days of the glass bottle: Parrotdog has shifted their entire production to cans. Cheers to another ten years, Parrotdog. | K A 9192 8 - 6
