My Small Steps into Buddhism

Aster Myhill To Rev. Jan Hai, Rev. Hung I, other Venerables, honorable guests and members of Jade Buddha Temple. Although Christmas is the most popular holiday here in the U.S.A., my favorite is Chinese New Year, brings back lots of childhood memories. It always means family, fun, special foods and red pockets. According to the Chinese tradition staying up late or overnight would bring good fortune, by adding another year's life to our parents for each hour's lost sleep or at least bring them long life. My brother, sister and I would play mahjong all night. Mom would be busy making offerings to the ancestors and deities. We were told that we were Buddhist when we were growing up. We would often have to g o to the Temple with my Mom. The smoke of the incense was very overwhelming. I got confused thinking that being a Buddhist was to believe in superstitions like the burning of hell money. Mom would explain about all the food that she cooked and of praying to 38

the ancestors. We didn't mind loosing sleep and loved playing with firecrackers. Later in life when I was dating I was involved in a kind of fortune telling process to see if that person was a suitable person to date. My Mom would ask the persons birth date to see if that person was compatible which I did not like not knowing that our future is in our own hands. When things would get rough I would go to the fortune teller myself to get advice. We would have special offerings on the 1st and 15th of the month. I then went out of my way to marry an Englishman who was Catholic without obeying the fortune teller or the blessings of my family. My parents had no way of communicating with him in the beginning unless I would interpret. They also felt that we were not compatible. I moved to Houston in 1989 when I was expecting my second child. We attended the Methodist Church. For more than 20 years I went to the Methodist Church and was very involved in the Bible Study

Group with children's education. I also joined a lot of other activities. I was very lucky to be a stay home Mother until I went back to the work force 5 years ago. Then in 2005 I met Jason at 24 Hour Fitness and he gave me the book "What Buddhist Believe." That book really opened my eyes about Buddhism. Soon after I started going to the Jade Buddha Temple. I have enjoyed my time with the English Dharma Group at the Temple where I learned that Buddhism is not about superstitions, deities and the fortune tellers of my youth. Sister Sui Chee introduced me to the practice of meditation and the lectures opened my eyes to the tr ue Buddhist teachings. If I am stressed and lose my balance at work I look forward to returning to Jade Buddha Temple on Sunday where I feel it is my sanctuary for peace.

urges that direct knowledge from one's own experience should be called upon. You don't have to believe something because it is passed on from generation to generation. You also don't have to believe it just because it is from a religious text but should use your direct observation to discover that by practicing loving-kindness and compassion you will benefit those who are in need. This way we ease our own and other people's suffering. Buddhism is about loving-kindness and compassion, it does not have any conflict with other religious teachings. I feel that I am so blessed being part of Jade Buddha Temple. I want to wish everyone a healthy and peaceful New Year.

I am very fortunate to be part of the English Dhar ma Group where they have encouraged me to help teach Sunday school. A parents role is important and it is our responsibility to deliver the right concepts and principles of what Buddhist should be and the great impact that we will provide for the generations to come. The English Dhar ma Group is so welcoming that both of my children, Paul and Rachel, have had the opportunity to attend classes. They were both captured by the Kalama Sutra (the concept of free inquiry). The Buddha tells the Kalamas to not just believe religious teachings because they are claimed to be tr ue by various sources or through the application of various methods and techniques. He 39
