TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS

EDITOR’S NOTES TURN IT AROUND We’ve all been in the position where we feel like our endeavors have gotten so out of hand that it will never work out, right? Like when you lose cattle to illness, or drought runs the feed costs through the roof or you lose a pasture lease unexpectedly... all things that can make you think “it’ll never work” Listening to people who sell Longhorn beef products through the years, I have heard of many instances when people either can’t get a foothold selling beef or circumstance lead to a loss of customers. The good news is this, those who have started into the beef business within the past five years are making it work. You can turn to pg. 18 to see how they started and how they are maintaining their beef sales. So if you are trying to get started, or if you’ve been in it for years, maybe it’s not time to throw in the towel yet. With an upsurge in demand for naturally raised local products and new ways to reach a large audience for cheap or free via social media, there may be a way to turn around and give it another shot. Speaking of turning it around, we are happy to announce we have a new person who started as graphic designer in Trails at the very end of wrapping up this issue. We will officially introduce Emma Moorman next month, but we’re excited to get her help getting Trails turned around and back on schedule. Lots of information about ways to get involved in the industry can be found in this issue. Turn the pages to learn more about those hosted by the association – TLBAA’s 35th Annual World Expo, the TLBAA Horn Showcase and the Rodger Damrow Colorful Calf contest. There are plenty of ads regarding upcoming industry sales and futurities too. A complete industry calendar can be found on pg. 64. Lots of opportunities abound to get out and see some great cattle and meet new folks. There has been a lot of growth within the industry over the past two years. Lots of new names buying at Longhorn sales, a large number of promotional memberships being given to new buyers and an increase in active memberships to our association. So if you’ve been discouraged about your own endeavors with Longhorns, try something new and turn it around. Take your best animal to a futurity and see how it stacks up in the judges’ eyes. Maybe you just need a shift in direction. Give social media a whirl and maybe you’ll increase ranch visits to see your cattle. Need a little extra income from those Longhorns? Process a young bull you can’t sell and see if there’s a whole new market for the lower end of your herd. There’s not always a will, but there’s almost always a way to turn things around if you want to badly enough. There are lots of folks in this industry who have been through tough times. Get to know some breeders and hear their stories. You may just decide you can turn it around. Until next month,

Association News

Chairman’s Message Longhorn Family, Well, temperatures are warming up, green is starting to pop up and people are working their herds and getting fertilizer out in hopes of good grass and fat cattle. Calves are hitting the ground and it’s like finding Easter Eggs when you get the first glimpse of them. Great time of the year. What’s not great is the events that have been happening around with all the fires in Texas and other states, the crazy weather we’ve had lately, and the damage that has been caused. We need to continually keep lifting our friends and families up in prayer as they try and put their lives and ranches back together. Thanks go out to all the “Good Samaritans” that have given their time and resources to help and to bring feed to ranches, to take in and deliver cattle to safe pastures. It’s that time of year again, sales are starting to show up. Now is the time to look through your herds and evaluate them, see what you cows are doing, what kind of calves you’re getting and what direction you’re program is going. Sales can help you improve your program as well as get your numbers in tow. I know that in the past couple of years it has not been the best market, which makes it more of a necessity to evaluate your program and see what would be the best financially of what you raise and what you can benefit from. Get the most from your cattle from what it’s costing you to get there. You have the options of premium sales and market sales to help you, as well as what you do private treaty. I know it’s hard for some of us to decide what to sell. I know that I have trouble with being “pasture blind” when deciding what to sell in consignment sales and what to cull sometimes. I’ve had to fall back on what I’ve seen in the past and what some of the old timers (older than me) had always said. When the numbers of cattle gets too high and the demand slows and prices fall, there is a hard choice to make, and that is to be honest with yourself, grade your cattle and cull. Once the numbers go down and the demand will increase and prices will follow. The TLBAA is doing great and the office is busy and getting ready for the World Expo, which is on June 22-25, 2022 in Belton Texas. The Horn Showcase is busy getting ready for the event coming up quickly in October 13-16, 2022 in Wichita Falls, Texas. They will be getting entry forms, consignment forms for the sales and advertisements out in hopes of making it the best one yet. These two are the largest events that the TLBAA puts on and your support is needed and will be greatly appreciated in making these happen. Sponsorship packages are available for both and you can contact Pam Robison at the office, or any of the committee members if you would chose to support them. Again, as always, the office staff are there to help members with everything. They are at your service to help members with registrations, transfers, Trails ads and DNA questions. Don’t hesitate to call on them for help. I am also at your beck and call, as well. Thank you for your continuing faith in the TLBAA. I believe we are headed for great things in this organization for our cattle, our members and our youth, our longhorn family.

To my Longhorn Family, Thank You,

Keith Du Bose, Chairman of the Board Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America

Shows

Join Us At The

35th TLBAA World Expo Join us for the 2022 World Expo to be held on June 22 26 at the Bell County Expo in Belton, TX. We celebrate our 35th year, our fifth in the Belton facility which has proven to have the grandeur befitting a World Expo. The 35th World Expo will feature the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America’s World Show, the National Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow’s Youth Show, the Texas Gold Futurity, Membership Meeting, Awards Banquet and so much more! Entries have rebounded strong for the 2021/2022 show season now that we are back to a regular schedule with the threat of forced cancellations low and slowly slipping from our memory. Thank you to all who participated and helped promote the Texas Longhorn breed in the show ring, the barns, and on social media. Invitations will be mailed out to World Qualifying exhibitors beginning in April. To receive a qualifying invitation, an exhibitor must have exhibited and placed 1st or 2nd in an affiliate or major show throughout the year. There are still a few shows left to get your animal qualified – check the show calendar for an event near you!

Remember – invitations are sent to the listed OWNER of the animal so, TLBT members need to check with their animals’ owners to receive the qualifying information. If you have any questions on whether an animal has qualified or not, please contact the office. The Longhorn Expo is much more than a show. It is a celebration of friendships, breeding programs, hard work and, of course, Texas Longhorns. This 4-day event features numerous activities and learning opportunities for Longhorn enthusiasts of all levels.

National TLBT Youth Show: Our National Youth Show showcases the future of the breed, our youth program - the Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow. Youth will present females, bulls and steers in their respective classes. We will also offer youth miniature longhorn exhibition classes. This year we welcome Shane Bedwell as our youth judge. Additional activities will include Livestock Judging; whereby exhibitors will have the chance to compete by judging heifer, bull, steer and cow-calf classes. Gold Merit is a two-part event where exhibitors are requested to keep a record book for the year and give a speech in front of judges. Quiz Bowl tests exhibitor’s knowledge, from agriculture, current news, and health topics – be sure and review the Trails magazines since last year’s World Show! The TLBT General Membership Meeting is the perfect time for youth to get involved as well as the election of new officers. The Premier Exhibitor Award continues for the fourth year at this year’s event. The competition has proven to be popular with participation from all four youth divisions. TLBT members earn points by competing in livestock classes, showmanship, livestock judging, quiz bowl, photography and Gold Merit. To be eligible, a youth must compete in ALL events. The high point youth will win a gorgeous show box sponsored by Culpepper Ag Services, The Source, Rafter M Ranch and Rafter M Round Up. Don’t miss this great opportunity!

TLBAA World Show: Our World Show will feature divisions including Haltered, Non-Haltered, Trophy Steer and Miniature. This year’s judges are: Open Haltered – PJ Budler and Non-Haltered – Jim Reeves. We are happy to welcome 14 | April 2022

Texas Gold Futurity: We are thrilled to host the 2022 Texas Gold Futurity in conjunction with the TLBAA World Expo on Friday June 24th at 2pm. Established in 1984, the Texas Gold Futurity allows breeders an opportunity to present animals in their respective classes for evaluation by a panel of five judges who score them based upon TLBAA Breed Guidelines. The high and low scores from the judges are thrown out, and the remaining three scores are averaged, with the highest score winning the class.

Photography Contest: The Photography Contest returns with a new theme this year; your interpretation of “United”. The cost to enter is $10 per submission.

Senior Heifer Sale: Graduating seniors present their animal and actively market to raise money for their college education at the Senior Heifer Sale. This year, we have seven Seniors working on marketing their animals to garner as much interest as possible. Last year’s Senior Sale brought over $43,000 to those lucky Seniors particpating. We hope you will attend and raise your hand for a good cause.

Breeder’s Memorial: We give tribute and honor to those who have passed during the year.

Futurities are an excellent opportunity to showcase and promote your young animals. The fee to enter is $100 with a 75% cash payout determined on size of class. In addition to the payout, class winners will receive a banner with grand and reserve winners receiving buckles. Enter now through May 15th. Visit tlbaa.org for more information or look for the entry form in this issue, pg. 17.

Membership Meeting: All TLBAA members are encouraged to attend the Membership Meeting to be held on Friday June 24 after the Non-Haltered divisions. The meeting provides another opportunity to discuss industry issues and best practices.

Awards Banquet: The awards banquet is held in the Assembly Hall (located near the Garth Arena) and has proven to be the perfect location and offered plenty of room for our festivities. It promises to be a great banquet - full of awards, recognition, and great food. Tickets are $35 each; reserve yours today.

Volunteer: The World Expo also needs YOUR help! There are numerous opportunities for you to volunteer your time and expertise. Please feel free to contact the TLBAA office if you would like to add your name to the list of those having the time and willingness to help at this year’s event. Longhorn Beef

And the

BEEF Goes On...

Anyone who thinks the market for Longhorn beef is stagnant or dead hasn’t talked to very many people selling it! We reached out to three Longhorn breeders who are on the newer side of the beef business to see how they were doing and where they are heading with their beef business. Since each producers journey is so unique to their own circumstances, we’ll take a look at each journey independently. Phil Norwood R3 Hiltop Ranch How long have you been selling Longhorn beef? Two years Why did you choose to start offering it to the public? I may have been a bit naive, but there was a lot more meat than I was expecting. I ended up giving away a lot of my first appointment because I didn’t have enough freezer space. Which turned out well, because those family/friends/neighbors now regularly buy from me. Do you sell strictly off the farm or via other avenues? (Farmers markets, restaurants, local stores) Miller’s country market in lott, tx allows me to sell ground beef and summer sausage on consignment. I’m still working on other independent markets/restaurants. Do you ship? Why? No. Shipping is too expensive, but I will deliver to DFW, Austin-San Antonio, and Houston. And it’s a great way to catch up with friends/former co-workers. 18 | April 2022

Walk us through your start-up steps (Did you start out selling pre-processing? What steps did you take to be able to sell packaged beef). My first appointment was labeled for resale using the processors label. The processor will help a producer get a custom label approved by either the state or USDA (depending on the inspector at the facility). I’ve had custom labels printed for each appointment since then. As I mentioned earlier, I gave away a lot of the first appointment to family and neighbors. What did you have to do to get your label approved? The processor will assist in gaining government approval for a custom label. You must be able to prove any claims you make on your label. Authorization letters must be provided for any logos you want to add to your label. I submitted an authorization letter from the texas department of agriculture which allows me to use the ‘go texan’ logo. I also submitted an authorization letter from the tlbaa for the certified longhorn beef logo (along with the association’s criteria for qualification). Both the texas inspected label and the usda inspected label were approved fairly quickly. The usda required a few changes to the existing label because I was claim-

ing a specific breed of cattle. I have both labels printed at the same label maker which makes it easy. Give a little take on the market from your perspective: Is it a hard sell? How much marketing do you do? What mile radius do you feel like is your market? The prime cuts are fairly easy to sell. Ground beef takes a while. I’m still pretty small in scale. Only four appointments last year. So most of my marketing is through Facebook/Instagram or even text messages. Would you say for you it is declining, stagnant or growing? I’d say my market is growing. Family, friends and now co-worker’s are asking about future appointments and trying to reserve specific cuts. This started as a way for me to cull females who weren’t as productive as they should be. Fertility (calving interval) and temperament are my primary herd management tools. I still have yet to take in a steer for processing. What are your goals for your beef program? I’d like to be in a few markets/restaurants (in addition to my current customers) in waco promoting the certified longhorn beef logo and growing my beef program to 12-16 appointments a year. What is the first thing you would suggest a breeder interested in building a beef program do? Ask restaurants/markets in their area if they buy from local vendors. Have a custom label prepared for their first appointment. Join the TLBAA beef group so they can follow the requirements to use the certified longhorn beef logo on their custom label.

How long have you been selling Longhorn beef? 3.5 years Why did you choose to start offering it to the public? People really like it and they’re happy to know where their beef comes from Do you sell strictly off the farm or via other avenues? (Farmers markets, restaurants, local stores) Only private sales to individuals straight from my freezer to theirs, most times we meet in open parking lots with coolers! Do you ship? Why? No I don’t, it’s not economical for the customer due to the high cost of shipping frozen goods. If I processed 7 animals a week I could make it more economical but processing 1 animal every 2-3 months doesn’t make sense to ship overnight Fed-Ex or UPS with styrofoam and ice. Walk us through your start-up steps (Did you start out selling pre-processing? What steps did you take to be able to sell packaged beef) I slaughtered a 4 year old bull that no one would buy, I got all ground beef from him, then started selling it to see how it all would work in my busy life. Turns out people loved the beef, I could meet up with my customers pretty easily, it was something that I decided I wanted to do. I tried a few more animals, one at a time, all grind (except the tenderloins, those are for me) and it was working great. I processed a really fat cow one

time and got steaks, brisket, etc. and realized my grass fed program wasn’t meant for cuts, so from then on all I’ve done is ground beef and done really well with it. What did you have to do to get your label approved? I process USDA only, my processor makes their own labels for packages, and the USDA stamp and my ranch information is printed right there on every package Give a little take on the market from your perspective: Is it a hard sell? How much marketing do you do? What mile radius do you feel like is your market? I’m in East Texas so people here love beef (when they run out of deer meat). The only advertising I do is word of mouth and Facebook posts and I have no trouble selling ground beef. I’ve sold over 300# before from a single Facebook post! I only advertise when I want to sell some, I don’t process high volume, so I sell it at my own pace. I travel a lot so I offer to deliver when I’m on the road and it’s convenient but most of my sales are within 30 miles from my ranch. Would you say for you it is declining, stagnant or growing? I keep it steady for my own reasons, I could grow it easily if I wanted to, the potential is there, the demand is there no doubt. Once word gets out it grows itself. What are your goals for your beef program? I always have and always want to sell out of each animal before I add a new animal to the freezer. I always want my customers to eat the freshest beef possible and I don’t want to find any old beef hidden anywhere. So I have dedicated freezers for beef only and track inventory very closely. I buy young trophy steer prospects and let them grow up in my pasture with no feed, if they make trophy status they continue to grow, if they don’t reach trophy status by the time they’re slaughter size they go to beef. Beef is an excellent backup plan for animals that don’t turn out like you want or trouble animals if you have a pesky one. What is the first thing you would suggest a breeder interested in building a beef program do? Talk to multiple processors before you select one. Some have horn size restrictions, some package differently, some offer labels, some don’t, every processor is different. Don’t let distance from your ranch determine who you use. I drive 4 hours round trip to mine because they fit my needs better than others that are closer to my ranch. If there’s anything you want to add please do. Don’t sale barn your bull calves or young steers! There are more and more beef folks that will pay a little more than sale barn prices and be happy to do it.

How long have you been selling Longhorn beef? Four years Why did you choose to start offering it to the public? We have processed meat for our consumption and enjoyed the taste so much we wanted to market and share with customers. Also, David was on cholesterol and triglyceride medications for several years until we started consuming Longhorn beef. After a few years, his cardiologist took him off of both meds since his bloodwork looked so good. Only change in his diet was switching to Longhorn beef. Do you sell strictly off the farm or via other avenues? (Farmers markets, restaurants, local stores) We sell mainly to local customers but also do farmer’s markets which has helped establish even more regular clientele. Do you ship? Why? No – we only use processors that are state inspected only, not USDA inspected. Otherwise, we could ship; however, shipping costs would have to include dry ice which isn’t readily available to us in our particular area of Texas. Plus it raises the cost of the product considerably. Walk us through your start-up steps (Did you start out selling pre-processing? What steps did you take to be able to sell packaged beef) We processed first then advertised locally via signs in front of our gates to the farm. We also sell eggs and have well established clients who wanted to try our meat. They have become regular customers. We left TLBAA meat brochures with our card attached at various local stores. I also have posted online via FaceBook friends which was another way of picking up new customers. What did you have to do to get your label approved? It is important to make sure your label is approved by the State Inspector of the processing facility you use for processing your meat. Each processor has their own individual State approved processing number and it must be on the label. One of my processors does his own labels and the other has a stationary company he recommends for us to print our labels. Give a little take on the market from your perspective: Is it a hard sell? How much marketing do you do? What mile radius do you feel like is your market? I believe the meat sells itself when a customer tries our longhorn meat. So many customers have been amazed, never expecting lean meat to taste so well. I have received nothing but compliments from our customers. We received only one complaint over the years and it was because the customer didn’t know stew meat has to be cooked low and slow – for several hours. She

Longhorn Beef – continued from pg. 20 tried to stir fry the stew meat. I now try and never assume people know how to cook certain cuts and will always confirm when they purchase certain cuts that they know how to cook it properly. The biggest compliments come from how there isn’t any grease to get rid of when making tacos, sloppy joes, meatloaf, etc. What an added bonus to the customers. They love our roasts, briskets, tenderloins, ribeyes and stew meat. When a repeat customer shows up at a farmer’s market bragging about how good our meat tasted, the line from others wanting to try our product starts to form. Word of mouth really helps sell our meat. We do deliver our products to our customers within about a 100 mile radius since our son-in-law who is our ranch manager lives closer to a metropolitan area. He delivers in his area, and I deliver around our area of where the farm is located. Would you say for you it is declining, stagnant or growing? It actually has been growing. Slowly but surely, however, I attribute the slowness to the farmer’s market being closed for the holidays/winter schedule. So we are looking forward to them being open again in a few weeks. What are your goals for your beef program? To maintain our customer base, adding to it, and continue to bring them a quality, great tasting product. Our steers are grass fed then finished with grain

the last 3 months before processing. We are a small operation, I do not foresee us getting into providing meat for restaurants or other similar venues, however that could change in the future. What is the first thing you would suggest a breeder interested in building a beef program do? Speak with a processor about the label requirements, if processing an animal with horns is an issue for that facility or not, and obtaining their pricing. Check around your area and ask friends/neighbors if they might be interested or know of others who might have expressed interest in purchasing locally grown meat. I have a couple local customers that have told me they will never purchase grocery store meat again – they enjoy knowing where their meat comes from and how the animals are fed, treated.

Marketing

Market What Mother Nature Provided While Guiness Book records and sales figures that many breeders only dream of are what grab media attention beyond the Longhorn community, that is not why the majority of breeders raise Longhorns. There is certainly a market for high end animals with big horn genetics. There is no harm in pursuing that. But, many people who approach you out of curiosity about the breed can be just as easily swayed by the every day positives that Longhorn cattle possess. Promote those qualities! The beauty of color and horn can get people to stop by your ranch and inquire or call after seeing an ad. The stories of the high end of the industry can certainly entertain and put a goal out there to work towards. However, when speaking to people about Texas Longhorns, the bulk of your conversation should include the following 8 points: 1. They are great producers. Keep records on the productivity of your cows and share that information. The expectation of having a healthy calf hit the ground every year gives a potential buyer the hope of recouping their investment. The fact that many Longhorn females breed back easily and calve regularly appeals strongly to buyers. 2. They are good mothers. Talk about milk production, attentiveness to the calf and protective nature. No one really wants to have to bottle feed calves. 3. Calving ease. While it is possible to have a problem with a delivery, Longhorn cows are well-known for their ease of calving and not normally needing any assistance. That is a very appealing and marketable trait, especially if you’re speaking to someone already in the cattle business. It also appeals to those who are taking care of the animals while maintaining a busy schedule. 4. Resistance to disease. This does NOT mean you should not vaccinate. Just because they have a lower incidence of disease does not mean they’re immune. But it does mean less vet calls and loss in the long run. 5. Docility. The majority of Longhorns, when raised around people, enjoy their company. Many even crave attention. This a trait that can sway potential new owners. You can talk about it, but it is best to demonstrate it. Let visitors hand feed cubes or scratch a few backs and they may well be a customer! 6. Nostalgia. To own a Longhorn is to own a piece of history. Read up on the history of the breed and talk 24 | April 2022

about the origins and history of the breed. The fact that they were crafted by nature in the wild is unique. That appeals to one’s sense of preserving and continuing a piece of living history. 7. Adaptability. Longhorns are tough and resilient. They can thrive where other breeds cannot. This does not mean they never need to be fed or supplemented! It means they can make use of forage that other cattle cannot eat, as well as tolerate a variety of climates from dry and hot to wet and cold successfully. They adapt well to their environment. 8. Longevity. Not only is the Longhorn a good producer, they live and produce longer than other cattle breeds. Hearing of females calving into their early 20’s is not that uncommon. Bulls can normally be bred for more years than other breeds as well. There are many other reasons they are desirable to own, but the previous 8 points appeal to every buyer out there, from owners of other breeds of cattle, to folks who want to show or do futurities, hobbyists and those hoping to break horn records. Now you’re ready to talk, but no one is calling or stopping by to hear what you have to say. This is a big problem for many who start with Longhorns in an area where people are unfamiliar with the breed. Having a website can help draw folks in, as well as getting listed Photo courtesy of Lynette Haltom. in directories of breeders both online and in print. There are other things to consider as well. While many have found some success with Craigslist, you still have a market out there of people who do not spend time on computers and smart phones. Consider local newspaper ads and local radio. In a day and time when many are too busy to stop and read, they probably have a radio playing in their vehicle . Local radio is especially popular if you are in a rural areas. Contact civic groups in your community that might like to learn about Longhorns. Even your local school agriculture department or extension group may have a need for speakers and be interested in presenting something new. If you’re selling beef, cooking clubs or groups that focus on natural, healthy living may be possible audiences. Always remember, you are marketing the Longhorn every time you speak to anyone about them. Never miss an opportunity to extoll the basic traits that make them a desirable breed of cattle.

Facilities/Handling

Animals Have Excellent Memories A question I often get asked is: Do cattle and other animals have good memories? They definitely do. The difference between human and animal memory is that it is specific because their memories are sensory based instead of word based. Memories of either good or bad previous experiences would be stored as pictures, sounds, smells, touch or taste sensations. If a cow gets hit hard with the headgate, she will remember it. The next time she will be less willing to put her head in the headgate. The animal will also remember which specific part of the squeeze chute is bad. She may enter the squeeze section, but then balk at the headgate. To cattle, a person on a horse and a person on the ground are two different things. In the animal’s memory, they are two totally different pictures. Cattle that are exclusively handled on horseback, may have a small flight zone and allow the horse and rider to get very close. The horse and rider are perceived as safe and a person suddenly appearing on foot would be perceived as new and scary. This may make the flight zone increase from 3 ft. to 30 ft. This is why it is so important to get cattle acclimated to going in and out of pens with people on foot.

BE MORE OBSERVANT People need to take the time to be observant. If your cattle stop moving through your handling facility, observe and see where they are stopping. A calm animal will look right at a distraction they do not like. Maybe they are looking at a shiny reflection on a parked truck. Vehicles parked around the chutes are a common distraction. Moving them may improve cattle movements. Remove hoses, loose chains, and coats on fences. If your cattle balk at steel braces on the ground that held the handling facility together, you should cover them with dirt. There is further information in my book Temple Grandin’s Guide to Working with Farm Animals. Dr. Grandin is a designer of livestock handling facilities and a Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University. Her writings on the flight zone and other principles of grazing animal behavior have helped many people to reduce stress on their animals during handling. She obtained her B.A. at Franklin Pierce College and her M.S. in Animal Science at Arizona State University. Dr. Grandin received her Ph.D in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 1989. Today she teaches courses on livestock behaviour and facility design at Colorado State University and consults with the livestock industry on facility design, livestock handling, and animal welfare. www.grandin.com

Herd Health

By Heather Smith Thomas

Tips on Handling Cattle with Fewer Problems Understanding the way cattle think and why they react to you the way they do can enable you handle them in ways that will help rather than hinder your purposes. If you can “think like a cow” you can more readily predict what cattle will do in various situations and be able to handle them with less problems.

INTELLIGENCE AND TRAINABILITY Cattle are very intelligent, but they “reason” differently than humans. Their primary concerns are basic functions like eating, reproduction and protecting their calves. They are also curious, however, relying not just on instinct but also on their ability to figure things out. They have excellent memories and adaptability, which makes them trainable. If you handle them with patience, understanding and consistency, they learn to trust you. They know what to expect from you and what is expected of them. Like horses, they are creatures of habit, and if you help them build acceptable patterns of behavior they can be very easy to handle. You must understand their basic nature, however, and expect the right things. If you know how a cow thinks, you can work with her type of reasoning instead of against it. Don’t get mad at her if she doesn’t react to something the way you would or see things the way you do. Her instincts and thought processes equip her to find the best grazing areas, be alert for predators (especially when her calf is young, to defend him from danger), to remember the location of a water hole or a mountain trail she’s used only one other time in her life, or the bush that had the hornet’s nest she bumped into 3 years ago. She may not understand, however, that she must travel along a fence and through a gate to get to some hay you put out for her in the next field--until she’s done it and remembers where the gate is. She can see the hay right through the fence and wants to go straight to it, and is frustrated because she can’t. She can learn about gates, however. A calf may take longer to figure it out and may keep trying to go through the fence instead of taking the long way around, but an older cow knows the way. Before domestication (before being managed and protected by humans), cattle were preyed upon by wolves and other large predators. They relied on their sense of smell and sight to survive, responding to danger by running or fighting. They instinctively fear anything strange or new until they find out it won’t hurt them. They are alert to unusual smells, sights or sounds--ready to run (or stand their ground and 28 | April 2022

fight, if cornered, or protect a calf). They may balk at a shadow, or something strange along the trail or hanging on the fence, or spook at a sudden movement. Anything out of their ordinary experience can startle them. If you are bringing them to the corral, a stranger standing by the gate may alarm them. Be aware of what might scare them, and try to make moving and handling them a good experience rather than scary. Don’t leave your jacket hanging on the corral fence. If they balk when you’re moving them, try to see what they are seeing. It might be a piece of paper blowing in the wind, a dog on the other side of the corral, or a wheelbarrow left beside the driveway—something not in its usual place. Calm cattle may stop and look at the things they are afraid of, whereas wild ones will get excited and run away (maybe even over the top of you). Some cattle are smarter than others and figure

A nervous, high strung individual can become less wild (gentling down enough to be tolerated in your herd) if she is smart enough to be trainable, to learn you are not a threat to her under ordinary circumstances. Cow personality and manageability (disposition) are always a combination of genetics (inherited intelligence and emotional tendencies—hot-headed or calm) and experience. YOUR ADVANTAGE AS “BOSS COW”

Cattle are very social animals, depending on the herd for security. They are happiest when they are with other cattle, even if the other herd members boss them around. Before domestication, they depended on the herd for survival; there was safety in numbers (less chance of being singled out by a predator, and more horns to protect the babies from wolves). Cattle were easily domesticated and easy to train, mainly because of their social nature and acceptance of a pecking order in the herd. They submit to a higher ranking herd member and can transfer this acceptance and submission to a human. If cattle know and re30 | April 2022

Herd Health – continued from pg. 30 der. Don’t let your favorite cow or calf become pushy or it may become aggressive. Stockmen have been killed by pet cattle, especially bulls. It’s nice to have a friendly relationship with cattle, but they must still know you are the boss. Pecking order is part of life for herd animals. The bossiest cow is on top and she got there by being more

aggressive, winning all the fights when other cows tried to challenge her. As top cow, she gets first choice of the best grass or hay, and water. Others must use a different pile of hay or wait in line at the water tank until she’s finished. Other herd members fight to determine who’s next in line (who bosses whom). The most serious fights are among lower ranking individuals trying

to defend their social position or move up to a better one. The top cow rarely has to defend her title; everyone else has learned to respect her. She merely has to shake her head at them and they move out of her way, or let her have the hay or water. You can use this same sort of “mind control” to advantage when handling cattle that know and respect you. If they accept you as “top cow” it makes your job easier because they don’t challenge your authority and are willing to accept what you want them to do. You don’t need to be able to outrun them to herd them, nor whip or beat on them to make them go somewhere they’d rather not go. If you’ve ever seen a bull herding his cows, you understand how the dominant/ submissive relationship works. He can gather them up, or keep them from going somewhere he doesn’t want them to go, just by his threatening actions. The herd could easily scatter and outrun him, but he already has them “trained” to obey. If your cattle accept you as the dominant herd member, you can handle them easily on foot, and they won’t run off. Many tribal people in other countries who handle their cattle on foot (taking the herd to and from the villages to graze) send their children out to herd the cattle. These cattle are the most highly domesticated and totally manageable--because they have been trained from calf-hood to accept the human as the dominant herd member.

2022 TLBAA Horn Showcase Coming to Wichita Falls, TX! The TLBAA is excited to announce the 2022 Horn Showcase will be held in the J.S. Bridwell Ag Center in Wichita Falls, Texas. The dates for the event are set for October 13, 14 and 15.

Some exciting new additions are planned for this year’s event. Two select sales will be offered for our consignors and buyers. A Bred & Owned Heifer Sale is scheduled for late afternoon on Friday, October 14. This will be for heifers with a maximum age of 30 months. The regular Select Sale will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 15. Both sales will have a consignment fee of $350 and deadline of July 15. These sales offer everyone the opportunity to consign your outstanding females and highlight your breeding program. Be sure and look for the consignment form in this issue and send in early! We listened to the members and will offer an awards banquet at this year’s Horn Showcase! Scheduled after the Bred & Owned Heifer Sale on Friday, October 14, the banquet will begin at 7:00 pm in the Ray Clymer Exhibit Hall, part of the Multi-Purpose Events Center. The banquet will be a short walk across the pedestrian bridge spanning the Wichita River between the two areas of the facility. Be sure and make plans to attend the banquet to visit with new and old friends while honoring the winners from the Horn Showcase Measuring and Futurity.

The Horn Showcase itself offers numerous showing, educational and marketing opportunities for Texas Longhorn breeders and owners. Foremost is the chance enter the measuring contest and see how your animals match up with others across the country. Remember, you have two ways to participate: Come to the event in Wichita Falls or find a satellite location near you the weekend before (October 8 & 9). The Horn Showcase will continue with its measuring contest to be held on Thursday, October 13. Making the trip to Wichita Falls with your animals, enables you to also enter the Futurity and the chance to win part of the purse money available. In the Futurity, more than the amount of horn is taken into consideration. A panel of five judges also evaluates the animals for conformation, color and

overall body condition. It’s a good way to see what is considered desirable in the Longhorn world in general. Bull Alley offers the best marketing opportunity for anyone with an outstanding bull. Your bull is advertised leading into the event and his moment alone in the ring as his credentials are highlighted. All bulls must be AI certified (so start that process NOW, if you need to) and have semen available for purchase at the event. For cow owners, this presents the chance to find bloodlines to complement your animals. There are also educational seminars scheduled during the event and plenty of opportunities to socialize and network with other Texas Longhorn enthusiasts. Mark your calendars in October for this “can’t miss event” and look for more information in the coming months.

TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS

Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow

Presidents

Message

As we come into the final months of the 2021-2022 show season, It is important to remember all the benefits that are available to TLBT members through our association. Beyond the show ring, there is a strong, supportive community that is all about supporting the youth and promoting the future of Texas Longhorns. From donation calves to top tier premiums and awards at shows, the longhorn community is always looking for ways to advance the breed and provide a better future for us. One of the primary examples of this unwavering support is the numerous scholarship opportunities available to graduating TLBT Seniors. Through scholarships, TLBAA affiliates invest in the education of graduating seniors because they believe in our futures. This is why it is so important to be involved as much as possible, because your hard work and dedication doesn’t go unnoticed. Of course, skills such as networking, confidence, humility, and integrity are all gained through showing, which will go a long way, even after your TLBT show career has come to an end. So my advice to you- stay involved. Even if you are only a peewee or junior showman, involvement in our association will all come back to benefit you. I remember when I started showing. I was only 10, and I had no idea how much longhorns would shape my life. Now, as a senior graduating in a month, I look back at my time in the TLBT and see all the ways my life has been changed for the better. Because of this amazing organization, I have met some of my best friends and learned some of the most important life skills. So, stay involved, do your best, and strive for success, and you will be greatly rewarded. #buildingabettertomorrow

AFFILIATE NEWS

AFFILIATE UPDATES NORTH TEXAS LONGHORN BREEDER ASSOCIATION

Greetings from The North Texas Longhorn Breeders Association!

Congratulations to Tom and Tammy Bush, the newest Directors to join our Board of Directors. The Bush family has been quite active over the past several years and we are looking forward to hearing their ideas to improve our PRESIDENT KEVIN ROOKER association. Welcome Tom and Tammy! KROOKER61@GMAIL.COM Also want to congratulate and welcome Laurie Krimmel as our new secretary. Looking forward to her contributions as well. Laurie has also agreed to assist with many other duties, such as our youth. The North Texas Longhorn Breeders Association will once again be sponsoring the Barn Party at the World Show. This sponsorship has become a quite a tradition and we’re excited to once again have the opportunity to continue the custom We will once again be rewarding scholarships for graduating seniors. This year we have 5 qualified recipients; Karlye Williams, Jacob Lowrie, Halle Hance, Alyssa Harvey and Adalyn Hamilton. They will be recognized at the banquet during our Spring Show. The Board of Directors voted to increase the scholarship amounts this year from $1,200.00 to $1,500.00 for each recipient. Next month will feature a recap of our Sulphur Springs Spring Show which looks to be even bigger than last year’s show! – stay tuned! We invite all that want to join our always busy, always fun loving association to reach out to us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/www.ntlba.org) , our website (NTLBA.org), or you can contact me directly (krooker61@ gamil.com) Until next month, Longhorn Regards.

The CTLA affiliate held its’ annual meeting in Oyen, Alberta March 5th. This year we used both in person and Zoom to enable more members to be involved. It was great to have 5 Canadian provinces represented and by using Zoom those that couldn’t be in person had the opportunity to share ideas and give their input on future planning of events. A successful “fun” raiser DEB LESYK auction helped get us restarted for 2022. A big thanks to Gordon and Charlene PRESIDENT Musgrove for setting up the Zoom connections and getting things advertised 306-867-9427 on our website. We had some super items donated and both donors and buyers were much appreciated. A new group of Directors were elected and the new President is Pete Hildebrand from Hanley, Sask. and the new Secretary/Treasurer is Leann Hildebrand.. Other Directors elected included Clarence Dekens,,Ontario Derek Overlid, Sask. Cody Bailey, Alberta and Gus Joyes also from Alberta. As we are a dual affiliate, Gordon Musgrove will be an ad hoc member on the board for the ITLA and Deb Lesyk will be the ad hoc member for the TLBAA. The association’s new address effective March 6th, 2022 will be Box 367 Hanley, Sask. S0G2E0. We discussed a new summer show that has been presented to us at Swift Current, Sask for July 1st. Members present felt we should take part in this show as a venue for promotion in the summer when our cattle look their best. Its a non haltered show, but bulls would need to be ringed and haltered to be shown. Agribiton will be our fall show and possibly a sale there for the association. Check our website and also our Facebook page to stay updated on the plans. Membership forms can also be found on the website.

5th Annual Rodger Damrow

Calf Contest Here’s how the contest will work: 2021 Winner

Entries must be e-mailed or mailed (postmarked) to the TLBAA office by December 31st.

• • • • • •

A colorful photo of an active TLBAA member’s most colorful calf born in 2022, will be submitted to the TLBAA office. The picture must be high quality. Preferred format is digital file from a camera, saved and sent at maximum file size. If using a cell phone, please do not use zoom. Get close to the calf. If sending a print to be scanned it must be at least 8 x 10 inches and printed out as a photo (Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, Office Stores). A $20 entry fee made payable to the TLBAA is to be included with the photo. Members can enter more than one animal, but each entry must have a TLBAA registration number or, if too young to be branded, the TLBAA registration numbers of both sire and dam. Contest will be open until December 31st, 2022. Winners will be decided by an independent judge not involved in the contest. Winners will be announced during the Longhorn weekend in January. The winning entry will be featured on the front cover of TRAILS. (If possible, think vertical when snapping the photo) The additional finalists as well as all other entries will be featured elsewhere in the magazine.

Get involved, check your 2022 calves and pick your entries for this annual contest. For questions or concerns, email Tina DuBose (tinadubose10@gmail.com), Deb Lesyk (halters.buckets@yahoo.com), or Myra Basham (myra@tlbaa.org).

Let’s see if we can have entries from every state and country that has TLBAA members. Make it fun and encourage other members to send entries.

Attention Show Chairs! Results are published once official results are received and verified as correct in the HORNS show management system. Please submit your official results to the TLBAA office as soon as possible to avoid a delay in being published in Trails Magazine and to ensure points are kept current. Please feel free to submit champion/Reserve Champion photos as well. Candids may be submitted to myra@tlbaa.org and may be used based on space available.

The first round of qualifying letters are in the mail! Remember, they go to the registered owner of the animal so be sure and check with them if you are waiting on one. See E-Trails to learn how to check your points online in the HORNS System. TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS
