About the Cover: Wow is the perfect example of good old Longhorn Breeding: Classic, Bold Ruler and Overwhelmer. He is 2030 lbs. of "gentle giant." He eats from my hands and gives me kisses! He is an Ambassador for the Texas Longhorn with visitors from Norway, England, Africa, Canada, Japan, South America and Australia. Lana Hightower, 17-year Texas Longhorn Breeder, TLBAA Judge and Board Member says, " Wow is the true perfect Texas Longhorn in conformation, color and horn." Wow clones are three bulls and two steers. The bulls are now on the females, and we are experiencing great calves with conformation, color and horn. The two steers are growing up to be big and gentle for us to enjoy.

From the Chairman of the Board The TLBAA World Show was held in June, and I feel it was one of our best ever. I would like to thank all of our sponsors. Without you, we couldn’t have a show as great as this one was. I would especially like to thank John and Diann Chase along with Larry Barker, from the Autobahn Motorcar Group Youth Scholarship Tour, for being our biggest sponsor for the last two years. Don’t forget that our TLBT youth members will be competing at the Autobahn Youth Tour Show August 3rd – August 7th. Our exhibitors did it again this year; they brought the best of the best Texas Longhorns to our show. I am not able to say enough about our volunteers, who do all of the work and get little credit. A big thank you to our show Chairman Trigg Moore, awesome job! And thanks to Traci Moore, too. We all know what kind of work goes on behind the scenes that our wives take care of. The TLBT elected new officers for our youth organization. Congratulations to Miss Sarah Faske, our new TLBT President. I want to take this time to thank the out-going officers and directors for their hard work and for leaving the office with a strong youth organization. The TLBAA filled two vacant seats on the board, Nancy Dunn, At-Large Director of Division A and L. D. McIntyre, Region 13 Director. Welcome aboard! A few months ago, the TLBAA office sent out an email to all members who participated in the 2010 Horn Showcase asking for members’ opinions. They were asked whether or not they would like to see one combined horn measuring event with the TLMA. Over 95 percent of the members who responded said that they were in favor of having discussions with the TLMA. I want you to know that I do hear you and take your opinions very seriously. Although the board has voted to halt the meetings at this time, I want you to know that I’m still listening to ideas on how we can mend fences and unite our industry. Please call or email me, I’d love to hear from you. Thank you,

Brent

Division C Directors To Be Elected

Coming up for nominations soon will be all Division C directors, consisting of two (2) At-Large positions and Regions 13-18. Watch for your nomination form being mailed 90 days prior to our Annual Membership Meeting which will be held in Fort Worth, Texas on January 13, 2012. According to the TLBAA By-Laws, Section 2—D: At least ninety (90) days prior to the Annual Membership Meeting, the TLBAA Office shall mail to the Active and Lifetime Members a request for nomination of individual or individuals for Director in the member’s representational region. Such member nominations shall be received in the Association office no later than sixty (60) days prior to the Annual Meeting. In order that any member nominee be eligible to be placed on the election ballot, he must receive write-in nominations from five (5) members who are Active or Lifetime Members. Should there be no members nominated by the membership for a particular Region, or should a nominee decline to have his name placed on the ballot, the Board of Directors will appoint an Active or Lifetime Member in good standing domiciled within the division to fill the vacant position at the same meeting as the election of TLBAA officers.

10

No less than forty-five (45) days prior to the annual meeting of the membership, the TLBAA Office or designated CPA firm shall mail official printed ballots to each qualified Active and Lifetime Member in good standing of that region or division. This ballot shall contain the names of the candidates, if any, who were properly nominated by members. All written ballots must be returned to the CPA with a postmark not less than twentyone (21) days prior to the Annual Meeting in order to be validated and counted. All ballots received will be validated and counted by an independent CPA firm or other organization experienced in voting tabulation as designated by the Executive Committee. The nominees receiving the most valid votes shall be elected. All newly elected Directors shall be installed at the Annual Membership Meeting. A tie vote will be broken by the Chairman of the Board drawing one of the names by lot. If a nominee wants a recount of the ballots in their election race, they will have to submit a formal request for a recount to the Board of Directors but not more than sixty (60) days after election results have been announced at the annual meeting. The contester or their representative would then physically go to the CPA firm and watch this recount at his/her costs.

TLBT OFFICER SPOTLIGHT

Name: Taylor Frontera TLBT Office: Teen Director Age: 13 years old School: Ferris Junior High Number of Years in the TLBT: 3 years

When and how did you start raising and showing Texas Longhorns? I started showing Longhorns at Autobahn Classic in 2009, but only showed in showmanship. I did go to the 2009 Fort Worth Stock Show to help my sister out because it was her first show. I got a sponsored Longhorn soon after and showed it at Glen Rose in 2009, which was my first show. What are some important things you have learned from showing and raising Longhorns? I have learned many skills such as: leadership, responsibility, love, caring, and much more. It has made me an entirely better person. What would you tell someone just getting started in raising Texas Longhorns? I would say, “Don’t give up, even when times are rough and you’re not doing well. Keep trying and working at it. It will all work out and pay off in the end.” What is your favorite part of raising and showing Texas Longhorns? My favorite part is caring and being with my animals, and actually showing them in the ring. The incredible people I meet make it even better.

TLBT

President’s Message Dear TLBT Members, The 2010-2011 show season was a great success, and we couldn’t have done it without our sponsors and the dedication of parents and grandparents. I would like to congratulate all of the Gold Merit, Livestock Judging, Quiz Bowl, Hall of Fame, Showmanship and Class Winners for a job well done. You are a wonderful group of people, and I enjoyed getting seeing everybody at the 2011 TLBT World Show! As this year comes to an end, we start a new show season and hope to make it a memorable year for all. Your new TLBT Board of Directors are: West Ryan (Vice President), Samuel Faske (Treasurer), Tarah Moore (Secretary), Hannah Faske (Parliamentarian), Lydia Faske (Reporter), Julia Faske & Nathaniel Faske (Senior Directors), Haley Horne & Taylor Frontera (Teen Directors), Rachel Faske & Miriam Faske (Intermediate Directors) and Marybeth Walker & Jonah Faske (Junior Director). I am excited to start working with the new Board of Directors and hope to come up with new ideas and fun activities for the youth. We have the TLBT Leadership Camp coming up for all the officers and directors. During camp, we will have meetings to plan for the upcoming year. We will be planning a new theme for the year and choosing a new service project too. We look forward to sharing that in next months’ magazine. Until then, I wish you all the best for the remainder of the summer. See Ya’ll on the Trail,

Scholarship Opportunities Help Students Move Forward To Meet Educational Goals by Henry King The most recent addition to the roster of scholarships available to young exhibitors of Texas Longhorns is the TLBAA-sponsored Bright Futures Scholarship Program. It joins the established Mosser Family Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Autobahn Motorcar Group Youth Scholarship Tour. While all of these have different criteria for eligibility, the common denominator is the requirement that the recipients exhibit Texas Longhorn cattle. The Autobahn Tour is in its eleventh year of philanthropy while the Mosser Family Fund has been providing scholarships for five years. The Autobahn Tour, established in 2000 by John and Diann Chase, holds two shows a year – the Autobahn Classic in February and the Autobahn Super Stakes in August, both held at the Will Rogers Memorial Center, Fort Worth, Texas. In addition to five-deep class placements, scholarships are awarded for showmanship, team penning, speech contest, quiz, art and photo contest, the Laura Harding Perseverance Award and essay contest. Over 600 youth have Tour scholarship accounts totaling nearly $1.5 million. The Mosser Family Memorial Fund was established by Rex Mosser, Midway, Texas, to honor the memory of his wife, Vicki, and their son, Phillip. Other TLBAA members added to the initial funding, and donation heifers at various sales continue to be auctioned to benefit the fund, which is administered by Dr. Zech Dameron, III. “Until this year,” said Dameron, “everyone who applied got a scholarship. We’ve had some real success stories and I’m very proud of them.” And the recipients do not have to be current members of the Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow (TLBT). Julie Pack is an example of a former TLBT member who has received several Mosser scholarships. Julie is several years away from high school and the TLBT, having completed her undergraduate studies at Tarleton State University, Stephenville, Texas, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. She then went to Texas A&M for a Master of Science in Reproductive Physiology. After August 2011

that she went back to Tarleton State University and got a second Master of Science in Biology, and has now completed her first year in Veterinary School at Texas A&M.

starting point for their college careers. Blinn is a two-year academic institution that offers co-enrollment and automatic transfer programs with Texas A&M and Sam Houston State University.

Kathryn Head, daughter of Stephen and Kimberly Head, Angleton, TX, is another multiple recipient of Mosser scholarships. She lacks two more semesters at Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas, majoring in Animal Science/Pre-Vet. She plans to enter the vet school at Texas A&M, and upon graduation, become a large animal veterinarian working with either zoo animals or livestock. Kathryn has been around Texas Longhorns all her life, and competed in shows since she was eight years old. She is an Honors Graduate of Angleton High School where she also won tennis championships in singles and mixed doubles.

Abigail Faske, like her siblings, was home schooled with basic education courses, and in her case, some elective business classes and college prep. After two years at Blinn, she plans to go to Texas A&M where she plans to combine a business management degree with jewelry design. She loves drawing, would like to create designs for customers and wants to have her own business. Abigail showed Longhorns five years, has served TLBT as a director, and from 2009-2011 was TLBT Secretary.

Matthew Head, Kathryn’s brother, will enter the University of Texas, Austin, with both a Bright Futures and Mosser scholarships. He began showing cattle when he was six years old and in Kindergarten; among his many Longhorn accomplishments, he earned the prestigious All Around Exhibitor award at the 2010 Autobahn Super Stakes. His Angleton High School accomplishments include National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, three year academic award, three year letterman in tennis, captain of the varsity tennis team his senior year, and graduated number 15 out of 486 students. He seeks a bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies at the University of Texas with plans to attend seminary at Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, to obtain a master’s degree in theology or divinity. Three youngsters from the Faske family of Somerville, Texas – Abigail, Jacob and Andrew -- have received scholarships this year. All three will have Bright Futures scholarships, and both Jacob and Andrew will also have Mosser Family scholarships. Blinn College in Brenham is or will be the

Jacob Faske will focus on applied sciences and Ag Marketing at Blinn College, then transfer to Texas A&M to get a degree in Animal Science. He credits neighbor Darlene Aldridge, DVM with getting his family involved with Texas Longhorns, and he plans to have his own herd someday. Jacob has served the TLBT as Senior Director, Vice-President and as President. Last year, the family went to twenty-some shows, but he says he will cut back some this year due to the demands of college. Andrew Faske enjoyed doing anything that helped raise money for the TLBT, and although he held no office, he was able to help in sales of raffle tickets, tee shirts, bandanas and sweat shirts. Following his two years at Blinn College, he plans to transfer to Texas A&M in pursuit of a Bachelor Degree in Animal Science. Already skilled in trimming cattle hooves, he plans to attend Oklahoma State Horseshoeing School, Ardmore, Oklahoma once he completes his academic studies at A&M. Lindsey Rooker is the daughter of Kevin and Laury Rooker, Poolville,

Texas. She is a graduate of Bridgeport High School and will be a sophomore at Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas. While in high school, she participated in UIL Journalism and she was co-editor of her high school yearbook. She played trombone four years in high school and continues playing trombone in her college band. She is a member of Tau Beta Sigma, a service sorority which provides music to the community and campus. Lindsey is a beneficiary of the Mosser Family Scholarship Fund. Blake Austin Powell is the son of Rickey and Melissa Powell, Hineston, Louisiana, where he attended Oak Hill High School. Blake will use his Mosser Family scholarship to attend Louisiana State University at Alexandria in pursuit of a business degree. He was very involved in high school with various clubs and was manager of the basketball, softball and track teams. He had an ACT score of 17 and ranked in the top third of his class. His parents turned the responsibilities of tending their Longhorn herd over to Blake, and he works diligently to be sure the cows are fed, the fences are mended and the calves are not neglected. He says these responsibilities have helped him develop a work ethic, dependability and financial budgeting as well as some extra muscle. Hannah Claire Murphy, Ennis, Texas, is a 2009 graduate of Ferris High School. Her mother and stepfather are Tracy and Craig Krueger. Hannah served as president and vicepresident of her FFA Chapter, and she is a member of the National Honor Society. She was a State FFA Ambassador and received the ambassador of the year award for 2009. She was also Autobahn Ambassador for the Autobahn Scholarship Tour. Hannah is currently a junior at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, where she is using her Mosser Family scholarship to major in Agricultural Sciences with a minor in Communications. Allyn Elizabeth Ryan, Danbury, Texas, will use her Mosser Family scholarship to attend Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas. Allyn’s

32

mother is Alicia Karbowski and her stepfather is Michael Karbowski; her father, Glen Ryan, died about four years ago. Allyn has been involved in many activities including FFA, National Honor Society, TLBT, TAEF (Teachers and Future Educators), Varsity Golf and Tennis. She served as FFA Chapter President two years; with her help, her chapter won the National Chapter Award. She volunteers at NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, a non-profit organization that helps people with mental illness and their families find the resources they need. At college, she will study psychology so she can work with NAMI full time or help people with mental illness through counseling or any other venue. That is her true passion. Sarah Galloway and Allie Galloway, Boyd, Texas, are daughters of TLBAA’s Pam Galloway. Each of them received scholarships from the Mosser Family Memorial Fund. Sarah Galloway was active in a variety of organizations while attending Boyd High School, including FFA Chapter Vice-President and FFA Chapter Reporter; she was on the State-Qualifying Horse Judging Team. Sarah was the third-highpoint individual in the State Floriculture contest and was on the State-Qualifying floriculture team. She is currently attending Tarleton State University, Stephenville, Texas in pursuit of a degree in Agriculture Education with a minor in Horticulture. Allie Galloway is a 2009 graduate of Boyd High School. There she was a Drum Major, served as FFA Secretary and won the Laura Harding Perseverance Award. She was on the National Honors Society and the Tri-M Music Honors Society. She won the DeKalb Agriculture Accomplishment Award and the USMC Scholastic Excellence Award. She is a Distinguished Student at Tarleton State University where she is studying Criminal Justice. Following graduation, she plans to attend a police academy to become a police officer. Rachel Calhoun is the daughter of Buddy and Katrina Calhoun, Ferris,

Texas. She attended Ferris High School where she was a member of the FFA and the National Honor Society, a recognition program for students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. She was vice-president of Josten’s Renaissance program which helps people express themselves, recognize achievements and share their stories. A recipient of a scholarship from the Mosser Family fund, Rachel plans to attend Tyler Junior College, Tyler, Texas, to become a dental hygienist. Emily Ann Marie Thurmond is the daughter of Derek and Hope Thurmond, Adkins, Texas. She graduated from East Central High School, San Antonio, Texas. In 2009, she earned the TLBAA Top Hand Award for designing the award belt buckles and t-shirts for the youth Longhorn show at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo – and raising the money to fund them. With sister Thera Hope, won the Haltered Herdsmanship Award at the 2010 World Show. She was the first female in her FFA Chapter to do a welding project – a barbecue pit in the shape of a Longhorn. She won First and Reserve Champion at her FFA Chapter show, then took it to the Bexar County Junior Livestock Show and won Division Champion. In high school, she worked on a two-year program to become a Certified Nursing Assistant and plans to use some of her Mosser Scholarship money at Alamo Community College to continue the basics. She then plans to transfer to Baylor University to complete her medical degree. Jayme Templin is the daughter of Jay and Barbara Templin, Ferris, Texas. She completed her high school work at Ferris High School, where she served the FFA Chapter as secretary and as president. She was the recipient of the Laura Harding Perseverance Award. Jayme plans to use her Mosser Family scholarship at Cedar View College, Lancaster, Texas, where she will study to become a Veterinary Technician.

Everyone Can Participate in the Affiliate Princess Challenge The Affiliate Princess contest has been developed to involve every TLBAA member who currently owns a registered heifer born in 2010. So often its been said that "shows are too far to travel to", "too expensive to attend", "too much work".... No more excuses.... There is no reason why every active member can't be part of the upcoming Affiliate Princess Competition. What's needed.... – a TLBAA registered 2010 heifer – a TLBAA current membership in good standing, and – a current membership with an active TLBAA affiliate. Don't have one of those? Check the TLBAA website and any of those three requirements can be obtained by getting involved with the TLBAA. For the affiliates....this is "an opportune time to shine"...promote your affiliate and the great cattle that are being raised by members belonging to your organization. How does the entry get selected? That's up to each affiliate and the more innovative the selection process, the more it needs to be shared in the TRAILS, so others can read about it in the affiliate news section. The deadline for entries is September 1, 2011, the photo requirements and the official entry form will be sent to each active affiliate chairperson in the upcoming weeks. Start looking...there's cash to be won, and bragging rights as the first TLBAA Affiliate Princess. Have fun, involve as many members as possible, find the best heifer to represent your affiliate. North Texas Longhorn Breeders Association

Kevin Rooker,, President (940) 748-1031 • rooker@hughes.net

The North Texas Affiliate is proud to announce that Stahlman Remmele of Paradise High School was awarded the first North Texas Affiliate scholarship. The scholarship is for $1200.00, which will benefit his studies at Tarleton State University. Stahlman began showing Longhorns through the Wise County Youth Project several years ago. We would like to welcome the following new members: Kirk, Rochelle, Barclay and Blair Brunson, Crawford, Texas; Mike, Tanya, Haley and Madison Horne, Paradise, Texas; Ronnie, Dianne, Wesley and Kelby Meadows, Paradise, Texas; Dennis Urbantke, San Angelo, Texas and Alan, Kim, Jake and Josh Vinson, Hico, Texas. Welcome aboard and if you have any questions……..just ask! A BIG ‘OL THANK YOU to Kevin and Laury Rooker for hosting the first North Texas Youth Leadership Camp. It was held at the Tabor ranch in Jacksboro. The new youth group is led by the following officers/directors: Caitlin Gilliam-President, Molly Cook-Vice President, Rachel Remmele-Secretary, Tarah Moore-Treasurer and Shelby Rooker and Wesley Meadows – Directors. The meeting covered such things as their new motto “Raising Tomorrow’s Legends”, Fundraising ideas and future youth clinics. Looks like they are off to a great start! We hope that the establishment of our new youth group, which consists of approximately 20 members, will entice other affiliates to do so as well. Save a space on your calendar for the North Texas Field Day and General Membership meeting. We are looking at October 15 as the date, but more information to come. The North Texas web-site will be going through some “construction” shortly. Please stay tuned!

Texas Longhorns Australia

John Bastardi,, President 02 - 6734 5320

Gunnedah is a regional town in New South Wales, Australia and on the long weekend in June it was the focus for the second annual sale for the Texas Longhorns Australia Inc group. Longhorn cattle from as far away as Charters Towers in Northern Queensland were transported into Gunnedah NSW where they went under the auctioneers hammer on Sunday, June 12th. Geoff Dawson, Secretary of Texas Longhorns Australia Inc (TLA) commented that the bidding was very spirited as Sam Plevey from Rex Carter Stock & Property conducted the sale of the 53 head. A purebred registered Longhorn heifer topped the sale when Rodney Cooper from Cooper Longhorns Scone purchased Coolamon Powder face for $4,600. Coolamon Powder face was bred by John & Jan Bastardi from Deepwater, and she was in calf to the USA Registered Bull Drag Iron. purebred Longhorn bulls sold to a top of $3,200 with an overall sale clearance rate of 97% when only 2 head remained unsold at the end of the sale. Geoff Dawson stated that the sale is growing in volume and the gross for the sale this year was $65,000 which was an increase of 38% on the $47,000 last year for a similar number of cattle. Geoff mentioned that even people that were interested in unregistered Longhorns were able to buy decent priced cattle on the day. Longhorn cattle are increasing in popularity as people become aware of the benefits of the breed. The TLA Inc group also conducted their annual general meeting and had a terrific 2 course dinner at the Gunnedah Services Club on the Saturday night. This enabled the members to mix socially, as many only see each other once a year. One of the special features at the 2011 sale was the first ever Trophy Steer Competition held in Australia. We had 11 big horned trophy steers competing for the perpetual trophy and this year’s winner was “Bob”. He is owned by Rod Sansom from Newcastle NSW. After the competition, 8 of the 11 trophy steers were put under the gravel, the other three (including Bob) went home to their special Longhorn paddock. Already the TLA Inc members are preparing for the next annual sale to be conducted in June 2012. “The Horniest Cattle in Australia” are growing in popularity.

East Texas Longhorn Association

Dr. Gene Hightower, President (903) 963-7442 • glcattleco@aol.com

Forty-five members of the East Texas Longhorn Association gathered for a “Picnic in the Pasture” and general membership meeting on May 21, 2011 at Ron and Barbara Marquess’ Marquess Arrow Ranch. The meeting was called to order by President Gene Hightower and a financial update was given by Lana Hightower. The H.O.R.N.S program was discussed and everyone was encouraged to sign up and take advantage of the registration/advertising/tracking opportunity that is being provided by the TLBAA. New officers were elected and Brenda Oliver will be the new President, Carole Phillips, Vice President and Lana Hightower, Secretary/ Treasurer. Three new BOD members were elected for a three year term: Dr. Timothy Roddam, Jamie Ollive and Craig Hester. Nine new members joined the Affiliate: Troy & Joy Calhoun, Jacob & Amy Weatherholtz, Keith & Tina DuBose, Jamie Ollive, Chad & Karen Niles, Joel Norris, Cody English, Jessica & Derek Wade & Sydney DuBose. Joel Norris previewed plans for a new Longhorn show for the East Texas area that will be held November 18, 2011 in Terrell, Texas at the S&S Arena. The new show will be sponsored by the ETLA and the Kaufman Police Department. Qualifying Haltered, Free and Youth classes will be offered. Jamie Ollive announced that she is working on a website for the ETLA, and she is also planning a show clinic for the youth. She is also working to put together an East Texas Show team to represent the ETLA. The discussion generated interest and questions among the breeders as to how they could support the program and participate. No Longhorn get together is complete without a hayride, and the group was treated to a ranch tour of the Marquess Longhorn herd. The first pasture featured cloned Longhorns and their offspring, and everyone had questions that Ron fielded with his extensive knowledge of the process. The next set of pens featured a three, coming four-year-old cow, with an impressive 82” TTT and 95 ¼” TH. The heifer pasture proved to all of us that the production sale, planned for this fall, would have a healthy offering of outstanding individuals. The yearling bull pen featured up and coming bull power with genetics that would improve anyone’s herd. Throughout the tour, we saw the bulls that are being used on the various herds. DH Red Ranger, Dream Maker, Gorilla, Damitt and Top Gun. There are 8 over 80” individuals currently being bred at the Marquess Arrow Ranch. The ETLA wants to thank Ron and Barb for graciously opening their ranch for our membership meeting and ranch tour. Please contact Lana Hightower at 903-963-7442 to be included in our next ETLA event.

ARK-LA-TEX

Dave Overdorf, President • (936) 637-9277

We have just wrapped up another great year at the TLBAA World Show in Fort Worth. What a great turn out! Most of our members were there showing their cattle and supporting the four day event. The World Show is one of the two biggest events of year for TLBAA. Chairman of the Board Brent Bolen and TLBAA Board Member Donnie Taylor, members of ARK LA TEX, were there each day to show their support and help out. Dora Thompson also brought cattle, and Steven Zunker was the announcer for Friday’s Non-Haltered Show. We had several youth members finish in the top ten of the TLBT Hall of Fame: Miriam Faske, Jonah Faske, Savana Taylor in the Junior Division; Hunter Winkel, Joseph Faske, Rachel Faske, Daryn Overdorf, Olivia Faske in the Intermediate Division; Lydia Faske, Sarah Faske, Nathaniel Faske, Ellie Bolen in the Teen Division; Abigail Faske, Julia Faske, Jacob Faske, Hannah Faske, Andrew Faske, Samuel Faske, Joshua Faske in the Senior Division. Some of our members also had cows that finished in the top ten of their respective divisions; Cindy and Brent Bolen had three cows land in the top ten Free Division Females with Fantom Ring BCB, Shesa Ringer BCB and Sugar Fix BCB. In the Free Mature Female Division there was Ringa Dinger owned by the Daryn Overdorf and Ellie Bolen having Bolen family and 4T Gretchen, owned by Donnie and Marilyn Taylor. Congratulations to all! fun at an Affiliate Show. As most of you know, in order to compete at the World Show, your animals have to be qualified. This means that members have to take their cattle to qualifying shows around Texas and/or the rest of the country. Even though it’s lots of fun, it takes time and money to travel. I just want to take a minute to thank everyone who participates in these shows. Speaking of shows, the ARK LA TEX is having our annual show October 28-30th in Lufkin, TX. There will be qualifying Haltered, Free and Youth Divisions. It is always lots of fun and great prizes. Mark it on your calendar. The General Membership meeting will be held at Bob and Neal Mottet’s place on September 17th at 11:00 am in Keithville, LA. We will have an election for new officers at this time. Call me if you need directions. Even if you are not a member of the ARK LA TEX affiliate, we would love to have you. Please plan to come and see old friends and make new ones. Until next time, go clean your trailer!

August 2011

Saturday, May 14 offered a lovely respite from the drought conditions and high temperatures raging across central Texas as The South Texas Longhorn Association (STLA) held its Spring 2011 Field Day & Ranch Tour. The annual event was hosted this year by Bill & Anita Wappler at their Lucy Creek Ranch near Lampasas, Texas and over 100 STLA members and guests enjoyed a special day of great food along with Longhorn fun and learning. Attendees were treated to a caravan tour to see the Wappler’s ranch and cattle during the morning. Guest speakers included Dan Robertson, YNN / Channel 8 Austin Meteorologist who spoke to the group concerning the record drought conditions in Texas this year and its impact on agriculture and ranching. The afternoon speaker was Brandon Dominguez, DVM with the College of Veterinary Medicine, Texas A&M University who presented information about Drought Health Problems for Cattle. Robert Richey and Elmer Rosenberger provided handouts and gave details for accessing and using the new H.O.R.N.S. online registration system that is now available via the TLBAA website. A catfish dinner was served as the noon meal and the STLA held its Annual General Meeting following the lunch. STLA Youth Scholarship winners were announced at the AGM and included: Dezarah Bliss, LaPorte, TX; Abigail Faske, Somerville, TX; Andrew Faske, Somerville, TX; Jacob Faske, Somerville, TX; and Brittany Guinn, Austin, TX. Bill & Anta Wappler were honored during the meeting with the STLA Lifetime Membership plaque for their years of dedication and service to the Texas Longhorn breed and their ongoing support of the STLA.
