EDITOR’S NOTES
IT IS MORE THAN POSSIBLE
I hear from a lot of breeders regarding their views on marketing Longhorn beef. I have met people who made excellent money off their beef in regions where there was prejudice against the cattle and I‘ve seen people give up quick because it didn’t seem to be gaining traction in their area.
I’m not going to lie, those who make it work invest time and effort in all areas - raising quality cattle, educating people about the product, researching processors and experimenting with different ways of selling the product until they find what clicks with the audience in their area.
The very social media that often draws negative comments from haters about bad experiences or assumption about Longhorn beef, is the very tool that is drawing in paying, repeat customers. As ironic as it is, don’t let a few negative people make you quit. Ask them why they didn’t like the product. Sometimes they may actually have valid issues that requires a change in where or how it’s processed. Your customer base may snatch up grass-fed / grain finished but not the 100% grass-fed.
That doesn’t mean the nay-sayers are always right by any means. If you’re having trouble keeping your beef stocked then the negative comments mean little.
If I know nothing else about social media and any forum where commenting is allowed, it is that negative people tend to talk more than positive ones do. Your repeat customers speak to your effective methods far louder than any public social comments do. If you are moving product let people know. Do a post about it selling fast, or showing appreciation for all your repeat customers. Positive posts showing the product is drawing repeat sales may stop the negative people form having much impact at all. Don’t neglect your website, either. Keep it clean, informative and make it easy to order what you have available for sale. Refresh your content to keep what you have for sale accurate and maybe change a photo or run a special offer to keep it fresh for people checking back.
If you have questions about starting a Longhorn beef business then look at the list of Registered Texas Longhorn Beef Producers inside and reach out to one in your area. Just remember, not everything works the same for all programs or regions. Customer preferences can vary widely even within the same part of the state. Keep on keeping on and let me hear about what works for you!
Blessings!

Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award
Hudson Longhorns
Corydon, Indiana
Hudson Longhorns have been in the longhorn world since 2003. During that period Bill and Elizabeth have purchased, marketed, promoted, hosted sales and raised the value of longhorns.
With great foundation cattle Hudson’s started concentrating on building better more complete animals from within. They have been fortunate to have high selling cattle in 2022, 2023, and 2024. The top six scoring females in the 2023 Horn Showcase were Hudson bred. Some of the top bulls of the industry carry the HL brand.
The best part though, is the willingness of Hudson Longhorns to mentor, coach, share and to guide so many others. It’s inspiring.
Truly a testament to their mindset, to make these cattle better throughout the industry and generationally. H
Mark Hubbell
Hastings, Michigan
This gentleman has been an amazing mentor and man of knowledge to many in the industry. There are breeders that have become successful because of Mark’s tireless work to produce the perfect longhorn.
Mark lives, eats and breathes longhorns. He wants to go look at cattle everywhere he goes. He respects the heritage of the breed, and will always stop and talk to new breeders about their cattle and give advice when asked, Mark Hubbell is the most deserving of this award of any breeder we have met to date. H
Justin Rombeck
Axtell, Kansas
Justin Rombeck has been a driving force within the industry from the time he was a freshmen in high school. What started as a FFA Breeding Program has evolved into a program that is running over 100 head of registered longhorns for him and his family. They have raised futurity champions, received numerous HSC trophies, been Superior Award winners and more, Beyond his personal accomplishments, he has forever shaped the industry through his Longhorn Opportunities consultation business. He started the Legends Sale and Futurities with his wife Amanda, as another avenue that showcases top end producing animals and the genetics those animals have to offer.
In short, he is a teacher that has the passion for making this breed better for all involved. H
Elmer Parker Lifetime Achievement Award
John T. & Betty Baker
Liberty Hill, Texas
With over 50 years of involvement and prominence in the Texas Longhorn breed, it is likely there is no breeder, couple, or ranch that has done more for the Texas Longhorn breed and the TLBAA than John T & Betty Baker of Sunrise Ranch. From being an integral part of forming the TLBT, over a decade plus of TLBAA Board service, including serving as President, to 20 years of Youth camps, judging, and education, the imprint the Bakers have left on the breed is both vast and deep. Mr. Baker has never met a stranger, and is known for his genuine care for everyone he comes in contact. Mrs. Baker is always ready for keen advice, and is known for her knack to help young people develop. Her involvement leading Gold Merit still fondly talked about. All of this would be enough to warrant them winning this award, but to leave
out the impact they have made by being stewards, and advocates for the breed that have come with their breeding and guiding multiple University of Texas Bevo mascots is unparalled. They are big picture thinkers, that put in the work, and love the breed..H
John & Christy Randolph
Smithville, Texas
John and Christy Randolph – members of the TLBAA since 1992 they have become a wellknown name among the Texas Longhorn membership. With a huge list of accomplishments from showing, sponsoring, cre ating events to breeding out standing animals, we all know and love these two. They have dedicated a lifetime to promoting the Texas Longhorn no doubt about it! They have an undying love for the breed. Tremendous efforts in all the youth programs within the Longhorn world. Al ways ready to offer help as well their knowledge. So much knowledge of breeding genetics, color, conformation, structure and more! These two deserve this recognition for the Elmer Parker Lifetime Award! H
and Joe Valentine. He was a sponsor of the Red McCombs sale, where he sold Day’s Feisty Fannie for 59k setting a high selling record price at the time. He often topped the Cattle Baron Sale and received the honor of Breeder of the Year with that group. The list of accomplishments is so great we would need a book to list everything, and a single paragraph is the tip of the iceberg. Please help us and honor John Stockton with this prestigious award from the TLBAA..H
Kevin & Laury Rooker
Poolville, Texas
For over 20 years Kevin and his family have been heavily involved in the TL.BAA in various roles. From Board member, to affiliate member, to actively being involved with the World Show, he brings a quality of class in everything he does. What some don’t often see is his sup port and appreciation for breeders that are just starting, or have come from great distances, or who aren’t large in herd numbers, he celebrates their successes and makes each of them feel welcome and part of the association. I would venture to say that no one has given more of their time and efforts to the being a TLBAA member and breed er than Kevin Rooker.H
John Stockton
Cleveland, Texas
We are nominating John Stockton of Stockton Ranches for the Lifetime Achievement Award recognition. John put together the largest Texas Longhorn herd in the country working with the Burton family. The evolution of the hard twist throughout the Overlyn line of cattle that has shaped a whole subfamily in the industry. He ran a straight Butler herd of cattle for many years. He helped bring the Legacy Sale back to life with Bill Hudson
Jack Phillips Award
Josh & Kit Dinwiddie
Plain Dirt Farms
Burneyville, Oklahoma
Josh & Kit spend a lot of time quietly mentoring younger individuals as they are starting out in the breed. Josh has served as the ITTLA president, and recently the Dinwiddie’s have taken on the huge task of putting on their own futurity event to help promote and encourage participation in the industry.
I can personally attest to their devotion of helping new breeders as I don’t believe I would be where I am with my herd today without Josh and Kit’s support and mentorship. Since I started my herd in 2020 Josh and Kit have done so much to support and mentor me never asking for anything in return. H
MEL RALEY RISING STAR AWARD
Tom & Amy Buxton
Fort Worth, Texas
Tom & Amy Buxton have exploded into the Longhorn world with wonderful enthusiasm! Buxton Longhorns have been active in sales and private treaty acquiring some of the best Longhorns available in the industry. Through calculated matings they are building their brand and have some elite calves currently being shown at futurities nationally. They are major sponsors of sales and futurities big and small. Tom has recently joined the TLBA Foundation, hoping to help spearhead the long-awaited Texas Longhorn Museum. Passion, enthusiasm, and integrity is what comes to mind in describing Tom & Amy. They have exactly what the industry needs and they are so deserving of the Mel Raley Rising Star Award. H
Brightman Family
Gary, Heidi, Carter, Grant & Cole Brightman Norwich, NY
Having known Mel Raley personally, I can’t think of any ranch or family more deserving of his namesake award. Mel would have appreciated this family’s energy and fond ness for the breed. In addition to their family business that pulls them in every direction, the Brightman’s study pedi grees together, make buying and breeding decisions to gether and attend Longhorn events across the country.
This family has worked diligently to build a stellar line up of both bulls and females. Their genuine love for the breed is infectious and undeniable. They communicate with other breeders, discussing all aspects of the industry while continuing to develop and care for their growing herd.
Matt & Jodie Marti
Little hb Cattle Co Amarillo, TX
Forging their membership with TLBAA in 2020 and joining the Texas Longhorn Family, Matt and wife Jodie have come into the breed with full force. They are always seen working behind the scenes and adding a much-needed hand anywhere asked. 2024 was the birth of the 806 Futurity in Amarillo, TX, and with it was a class act. Setting a standard for an outstanding, smoothly run Futurity. Matt and Jodie and their wonderful daughters are a huge part of why TLBAA should exist and dream for a big future. Matt and Jodie have also created a phenomenal line of Texas Longhorns and are producing some fantastic future winners. They are very dedicated to the breed standards, as well as ethics. From numerous sale and futurity sponsorships over the short span, helping behind the scenes, and producing an outstanding venue, to breeding top notch registered Texas Longhorns, Matt and Jodie are the perfect example of a true rising star among us. H
Mel Raley and the Brightman family could be said to be cut from the same cloth. H

Texas Longhorn Beef:
It’s Not Just a “Texas Thang”
Texas Longhorn beef has a customer base that is much broader then one might expect, thanks to a lot of education, samples and persistence by breeders who choose to generate income selling a nutritious, delicious and healthy product.
Longhorn beef can be found in restaurants, local retail stores, and being served at dinner tables from the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, Brazil not mention in states all across the U.S.
While it is not yet a product in major retail chains, it still has a positive effect on the bottom line of Longhorn breeding programs of all types, with many enjoying secondary income that covers 30% or more of the costs of developing their main herd of breeding stock. Several factors have actually increased the interest in the products offered by those selling Longhorn beef.
• Concern over what is in commercial beef
• Appreciation for the health benefits of 100% grassfed beef
• Increased education on the positive differences in Longhorn beef nutritional content, even when grain finished.
Today, there are even more ways for people to promote and handle the logistics of a beef business. Social media, Co-op marketplaces (both online and in brick and mortar locations), specialty butcher shops, restaurants, online stores...and the tried and true Farmer’s Markets and word of mouth in your area.
The one challenge that sometimes puts a stumbling block in the way of someone’s beef program is even in today’s “connected” society, there are still strong regional differences that can create challenges in getting people to give Longhorn beef a try. This is where persistence and educating the customer become really important. Most people who have grown their market or have succeeded in areas that one might think wouldn’t welcome Longhorn beef have a few things in common.
• They get the product out in front of people and have cooked samples.
• They are enthusiastic about the product and eat it themselves.
• They present material to not only show they humanely raise the animals in a clean and kind environment, but that also extolls proven health benefits of the lean beef.
In speaking to several breeders from different regions and varied years selling Longhorn beef products and the results they are getting are encouraging.
ALBERTA, CANADA
One Tree Ranching, Ltd., Gordon & Charlene Musgrove, have been selling their Longhorn beef for over 20 years. While they have sold to friends and family, at the farmer’s market and in retail outlets, they have found their best avenue to be off the farm sales to repeat customers , bringing them in by word of mouth, as well as online and newspaper advertising.
The Musgroves have seen an increased demand for their product with less resistance for new people to try Longhorn beef. The factors they feel contribute most to their success? A good product, advertising and word of mouth referrals.
Beef sales cover 30% of the costs to keep their Longhorn program going. The one thing they would say about having a beef program - it’s a great opportunity to market second-cut cattle, while allowing the first cut to be sold as breeding and replacement stock.
ARKANSAW, WISCONSIN
Ali Mast of Painted Outlaw Ranch has been steadily selling Longhorn beef for 8 years, but sold small amounts here and there since 2010.
Outlets to sell Longhorn beef have included friends and family, as well as through retail outs, the most successful of which has proved to be a local food co-op. “Even though they have a handful of other grass fed producers that also sell there,” says Mast, “our demand is still high.” The food co-op now has two stores carrying our beef retail and they serve our product in the deli as well.
Business has been good, increasing through the years. Mast cites 2020 as good for business, and even though demand has not hit those high again, total demand is still higher now than pre-2020.
So how’s perception in the Midwest? Neighbors thought Mast was crazy, not only for buying horned cattle, but also for grass finishing them. “I’m not sure what they expected, but what we are wasn’t it,” she explains, “They are surprised to see our cattle are fat and docile.”
In their cow-populated area heavy with dairy farms, there is no shortage of people selling beef. Many of those other operations are selling corn fed/finished product. Mast decided to go grass fed and finished to
set her product apart from the others. When customers say that Mast’s product is better than other grass fed beef they’ve had, that’s when she likes to tell people Longhorn is the way to go.
While she appreciates the increased awareness of grass-fed beef’s benefits as well as the interest in how the food we eat in general is raised, she personally thinks we need all the methods of raising and finishing beef as grass finishing only couldn’t supply the total demand.
The interest generated by their website is what she feels has contributed most to their growth. That growth is now at the point that their beef business pays 50% of the costs of their Longhorn program.
Her advice if you’re thinking of starting into a beef business? “Don’t give up, keep learning, and put yourself out there. It took years for us to get noticed and even longer for people to try our beef. Research information on whichever way you decide works best for you to finish your cattle. We have come a long way from where we started- feeding dry hay and pasture to our cattle, to now- baleage, rotational grazing, custom mineral. Our girls have been huge promoters, now that they take heifers to the county fair. As far as anyone remembers they are the first kids ever to bring Longhorns to our county fair. They talk to everyone about how Longhorns are better and people come to the barn just to see the Longhorns.”
In hindsight, the one thing Mast said hindered them in the beginning - starting out with grade cattle. “We didn’t get registered cattle until 2016 and the size difference was crazy,” state Mast, “Especially in our area where Longhorns aren’t popular in the first place. People call anything with horns “a longhorn.”
WACO, TEXAS
Phil Norwood of r3 hilltop ranch is not a salesman by nature, but he is enthusiastic about the product and in encouraging folks to participate in the Registered Texas Longhorn Beef program offered by the TLBAA.
Selling to friends and family as well as through a retail outlet, demand for his product has grown despite the fact that he doesn’t “sell” the beef, he just lets people know it is available.
He makes people aware via social media posts promoting his Certified Longhorn Beef program on both his personal and ranch pages. He also has a dedicated page (and order form) on the website r3hilltop.com/ beef.
While he stills sees some resistance in people trying Longhorn, he does see a greater appreciation by customers in naturally raised and grass-fed beef now than in past years.
How do beef sales contribute to the bottom line? “Income from my beef program helps pay about 1/3 of my feed bill each year,” says Norwood. “Not only palletized supplemental feeds, but fertilizer and hay contractor expenses as well. “
A final word regarding a beef program - “The meat is fantastic!”
NORTH STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT
One of the newest Longhorn beef producers, Kim & Yuri Grijalva of Grijalva Cattle Co. launched a beef program in February of 2024, selling in a local retail store, and opened a farm store on their property in April 2024.
“While selling at the local retail store has certainly provided us with valuable exposure to health-conscious customers seeking local, grass-fed, and grassfinished beef, our most successful sales outlet has been our grassroots sales strategies,” Grijalva says, “By focusing on in-store sales at our farm store, we’ve been able to tap into the growing interest in Longhorn beef as a heart-healthy alternative, particularly in the northeastern region. This targeted approach has allowed us to better connect with our customers and promote our products e ectively.”
“By emphasizing the heart-healthy and nutrientdense qualities of Longhorn beef in our sales and social media campaigns, we’ve managed to generate significant interest. In fact, we’re currently facing the challenge of keeping up with demand as our beef is selling out faster than we can finish cattle.
“Our customers tend to come back for more and eagerly visit our store when we announce restocking.
Many even place large advance orders to secure the first pick of our o erings. It’s worth mentioning that customer education plays a crucial role in our sales strategy, as we take the time to share the history of the Longhorn breed and discuss its heart-healthy qualities with new customers. This informative approach seems to contribute to their satisfaction and loyalty.
“One of the key factors contributing to the growth of our farm has been our focus on social media engagement and targeted advertising. By consistently promoting our Longhorn beef on Facebook and engaging with the local community through regular posts, we have been able to build a strong online presence.
“Additionally, we’ve found that providing an immersive farm experience for visitors, where they can learn about the animals and the production process, has created excitement and a sense of connection. This, coupled with sharing knowledge about the unique benefits of Longhorn beef, has been a major driver of customer
“While it’s not yet a substantial primary source of income, we are working towards growing our retail sales to eventually fund our breeding program and invest in top-quality animals. We are hopeful that with continued e ort and dedication, our beef program will become a more substantial source of income for our farm
The one main thing we’d like to emphasize about having a Longhorn beef program is the importance of breeding for the complete animal. This means considering all aspects, including conformation, size, horn, and color. By doing so, you ensure that even the animals that are eventually culled will still fetch a good price at the market or, if raised for beef, possess the ability to stock up well. This holistic approach to breeding not only benefits your beef program, but also contributes to the overall sustainability of your farm and the value of Longhorn as beef cattle.”
Join The Program!
Why are all those ranches listed on the following pages? They are all paid members of the TLBAA’s Registered Texas Longhorn Beef Producer Program.
Can you sell your Longhorns as beef without this program? Yes, you can. However, as a member, you can enjoy increased exposure for your program, access to educational materials and webinars and the ability to use our beef producer and certified Texas Longhorn beef logos on your labels. This not only helps your marketing efforts, it gives a big boost to your credibility to the public skeptical about what they are eating.
Along with those logos, you can be sent an official letter to present to your USDA or State inspected facility that verifies you have the right to use the logos on your label and that you are indeed a member of the TLBAA and raising registered Texas Longhorns.
When you join the program, you will immediately be sent 150 marketing brochures for FREE. These colorful, professional brochures have nutritional data, health information and the benefits of the product you are selling.
Your ranch contact information will be listed on our website on the Longhorn Beef Providers page. The new website has a whole menu of information that we are steadily adding to about Longhorn beef to educate
the public about the desirability of the product and the productivity of the Longhorn breed.
Twice a year, (currently in April & October), Trails Magazine will publish the list of Registered Texas Longhorn Beef Producers to reach those who may not venture online.
Trails also features editorial space each month about different topics regarding Longhorn beef production and twice a year, in the months listed above, Longhorn Beef is the Featured Topic. In those special beef issues, those choosing to mention the beef program or logo in their ads get to run for the lowest 12x rate even if they only run once a year.
Currently there is a private Facebook group for program members where producers can share photos of both cooked and raw products, packaging/label ideas and discuss production topics.
Your beef committee has also started a public Facebook group for anyone interested in the topic of Longhorn Beef. Simply search Facebook for “Registered Longhorn Beef” and if you see the logo above, you know you have the correct page.
The program is only $75 per year and the form to join can be found on our website or by calling the TLBAA office and we can e-mail you one.

Take Your Photos Now for Spring Sales
This issue marks the beginning of notices about spring sales and their winter consignment deadlines. If you are considering consigning to a spring sale or advertising animals in winter issues of Trails, go take photos before those shaggy winter coats come in and the weather turns wet and cold.
While many ads and lot listings have animals placed on new backgrounds, mud patches on the hair or long shaggy coats often look out of place and even if your animal is superior quality it could hamper the potential buyer from seeing that quality.
While people should understand that they are animals and outdoors and must get shaggy in colder climates, do you really want to invest money in promoting an animal and then present them mud caked and shaggy?
While you’re taking photos, grab some video footage as well. When its time to have ads created, have the designer create a QR code that links to where the video is online. You can get help with posting
the video from your website host or the TLBAA. Then your print ads can actually allow people to see your animal live and get a 360 degree view of the animal. If you are looking for other ways to showcase your consignments, don’t hesitate to reach out to Myra Basham at Trails to discuss options available that will fit your budget myra@tlbaa.org or 817-625-6241.

A unique family reunion with all the familiarity and excitement of Christmas morning. The months, weeks and days leading up to the annual Lockhart pilgrimage are similar to a child’s infectious excitement for the Holidays. For many, the highlight of their social calendar. Although, the 2024 Butler Breeders had a long list of absentee, including dear friends Kaso Kety, Judy & Paul Sellers, Terry Moore, Ray Beadle, John & Jane Thate, it was also a year for welcoming many new friends.
Friday night’s pre-sale meeting and Futurity Awards welcomed many new faces, consignors and award winners both. It was exciting to see the growth and inspiring to see new breeders picking up top awards. For a second year, our Butler Futurity Committee hosted a wonderful social event and welcomed everyone for food and fellowship.
Saturday, kicking off with ‘Cow Paddy Bingo’ and then donation lots there was energy. At times bidding was fast and furious. Quality cows sold for good money & yet there were buyer’s dream opportunities which arose. A strong online bidder presence was clear and welcomed. Mirroring our new consignors, first time winners there were new online buyers.
A true testimony to the passion and dedication of this small group. 27 years in, still drawing new interest, still igniting the Butler fire in future generations, still laying foundations for preserving the future of our beloved cattle. Long may the growth continue and the cattle prosper.
See y’all next year!

What is your favorite part about showing Longhorns?
Cattle
-My favorite part of showing Longhorns is the community. I feel that I have found a family in this breed and wouldn’t trade it for anything. Who/what has been your biggest influence while showing?
- My biggest influence while showing has been my mother. My mom is always the first to tell it like it is. But she has also always been there for me. My mother is the strongest person I know and I definitely could not do any of this without her.
Do you have a favorite Longhorn in your herd or one that you have shown and why? (Past or Present)
- My favorite longhorn from my herd is, 2M Rhinestone Cowboy although he can be a bit of a handful, he is such a sweet boy and is usually almost always willing to do whatever as long as he gets a treat after.
My favorite show is Cattleman’s Congress.
What are your future aspirations or plans?
After I graduate High school in 2026, I plan to double major in agricultural business and Marketing. I would love to be able to start a herd and continue to be a part of the Longhorn community!

What is your favorite part about showing Longhorns?
- My favorite part about showing longhorns is that it allows me to bring awareness about a breed of cattle that most people aren’t too familiar with. Showing has encouraged me to talk more about this breed and seeing people’s faces when I tell them that I show longhorns makes me so happy because they are shocked and they didn’t know that showing longhorns was a thing!
Who/what has been your biggest influence while showing?
- My biggest influence is my little sister. Every show she pushes me to do better and better. Without her I think I would be lost. She is such an amazing kid and such an amazing showman. Even when her and I show in the same class, I always wish her luck and I get so happy for her when she does good. Overall, she influences me to do better and I love her so much.
Do you have a favorite Longhorn in your herd or one that you have shown and why? (Past or Present)
- My favorite is my heifer, Luna. I love watching how much she has grown and seeing how much potential she has. When I first got her, she was small and didn’t have much horn, but over the last 3 months she has grown into a beautiful heifer. She has really good lineage too, so I’m so excited to see what she will grow to be like.
Tell me about your Senior Sale Heifer.
- My Senior Sale heifer is 3F Yellowstone’s Luna. She is 9 months old. She is a beautiful black and white heifer. Luna is the granddaughter of Goldmine 1, Cowboy Catchit Chex, Cowboy Chex, Sitting Bull, and so many more amazing sires. She is one of the sweetest heifers I have had. Luna loves getting scratches on the neck, behind the horns and she loves giving kisses. She is a bit of an attention seeker, so if you stop giving her scratches, she nudges you until you give her scratches again. Overall, she is a sweet heifer and I love her so much.
What are your future aspirations or plans?
- I plan on attending a university and getting a bachelors in animal science. I then plan on becoming an ag teacher and hopefully encourage school districts to add longhorns into their FFA programs for kids to share community with.

What is your favorite part about showing Longhorns?
- I love being part of an organization where I can interact with other showmen and show beautiful longhorns..
Who/what has been your biggest influence while showing?
- Jenna Quillin has been my biggest influence in showing. She has taught me to believe in myself and made me love showing even more.
Do you have a favorite Longhorn in your herd or one that you have shown and why? (Past or Present)
- My favorite Longhorn would have to be Dragon Hunter. He was one of my first show longhorns. He was my favorite and the best showmanship longhorn. He lives on our property and is enjoying his retirement.
What is your favorite show?
- My favorite show was the World Show in Belton. I love celebrating all of my hard work and hanging out with my friends for several days.
What are your future aspirations or plans?
- I want to show longhorns as a youth and then go to college. I would like to go to school to be a veterinarian and become a large and small animal vet. I would also like to continue to grow my longhorn herd and help future showmen.
Market What Mother Nature Provided
While Guiness Book records and sales figures that many breeders only dream of are what grab media attention beyond the Longhorn community, that is not why the majority of breeders raise Longhorns.
There is certainly a market for high end animals with big horn genetics. There is no harm in pursuing that. But, many people who approach you out of curiosity about the breed can be just as easily swayed by the every day positives that Longhorn cattle possess. Promote those qualities!
The beauty of color and horn can get people to stop by your ranch and inquire or call after seeing an ad.
The stories of the high end of the industry can certainly entertain and put a goal out there to work towards. However, when speaking to people about Texas Longhorns, the bulk of your conversation should include the following 8 points:
1. They are great producers. Keep records on the productivity of your cows and share that information. The expectation of having a healthy calf hit the ground every year gives a potential buyer the hope of recouping their investment. The fact that many Longhorn females breed back easily and calve regularly appeals strongly to buyers.
2. They are good mothers. Talk about milk production, attentiveness to the calf and protective nature. No one really wants to have to bottle feed calves.
about the origins and history of the breed. The fact that they were crafted by nature in the wild is unique. That appeals to one’s sense of preserving and continuing a piece of living history.
7. Adaptability. Longhorns are tough and resilient. They can thrive where other breeds cannot. This does not mean they never need to be fed or supplemented! It means they can make use of forage that other cattle cannot eat, as well as tolerate a variety of climates from dry and hot to wet and cold successfully. They adapt well to their environment.
8. Longevity. Not only is the Longhorn a good producer, they live and produce longer than other cattle breeds. Hearing of females calving into their early 20’s is not that uncommon. Bulls can normally be bred for more years than other breeds as well.
There are many other reasons they are desirable to own, but the previous 8 points appeal to every buyer out there, from owners of other breeds of cattle, to folks who want to show or do futurities, hobbyists and those hoping to break horn records.
3. Calving ease. While it is possible to have a problem with a delivery, Longhorn cows are well-known for their ease of calving and not normally needing any assistance. That is a very appealing and marketable trait, especially if you’re speaking to someone already in the cattle business. It also appeals to those who are taking care of the animals while maintaining a busy schedule.
4. Resistance to disease. This does NOT mean you should not vaccinate. Just because they have a lower incidence of disease does not mean they’re immune. But it does mean less vet calls and loss in the long run.
5. Docility. The majority of Longhorns, when raised around people, enjoy their company. Many even crave attention. This a trait that can sway potential new owners. You can talk about it, but it is best to demonstrate it. Let visitors hand feed cubes or scratch a few backs and they may well be a customer!
6. Nostalgia. To own a Longhorn is to own a piece of history. Read up on the history of the breed and talk
Now you’re ready to talk, but no one is calling or stopping by to hear what you have to say. This is a big problem for many who start with Longhorns in an area where people are unfamiliar with the breed. Having a website can help draw folks in, as well as getting listed in directories of breeders both online and in print.
There are other things to consider as well. While many have found some success with Craigslist, you still have a market out there of people who do not spend time on computers and smart phones.
Consider local newspaper ads and local radio. In a day and time when many are too busy to stop and read, they probably have a radio playing in their vehicle . Local radio is especially popular if you are in a rural areas.
Contact civic groups in your community that might like to learn about Longhorns. Even your local school agriculture department or extension group may have a need for speakers and be interested in presenting something new. If you’re selling beef, cooking clubs or groups that focus on natural, healthy living may be possible audiences.
Always remember, you are marketing the Longhorn every time you speak to anyone about them. Never miss an opportunity to extoll the basic traits that make them a desirable breed of cattle.

Maraman’s Longhorn Life Inspires Western Artist
Back in December 2023, the Cowgirl Artists of America reached out to Stann Maraman and asked her to be a muse for an art project for a juried art show. Not knowing what to expect, Maraman let artist Elizabeth Lewis Scott come to her place for three days and basically be immersed in, and hopefully inspired by, Maraman’s day-to-day activities with the Longhorns.
The resulting work was featured in a show titled “Women’s Work - Artwork that Celebrate’s Women’s Contributions to the American West” held in Trinidad, CO, August 17 to September 30, 2024 at the A.R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art.
The intent of the show according to the museum’s website:
Celebrating the true contributions of Women in the American West
Much Western art is an ode to the work and contributions of men, while often limiting women to a single sphere, or pretty face. “Women’s Work,” a groundbreaking exhibition that teams artists up with women on working ranches, turns that notion on its head. By showcasing Western women as multi-faceted contributors to the Western way of life. Furthermore, Women’s Work aims to provide a platform for Indigenous women to authentically share their own stories, rooted in their intimate connections to culture and heritage. Traditional and fine artists are included, with all work on the theme of “Women’s Work.”
The artist’s statement, as printed in the catalog, to
Special note: This is the first Longhorn we bought. We purchased her from Roger Cole at our 1st HSC in 2017. Roger was the first person to talk with us about AI and this bull calf at side is a Concealed Weapon bull calf that was a result of our 2022 AI. “Treasure”, Oil, 11” x 14” by Elizabeth Lewis Scott
“describe the significance of [the artist’s] work and the women featured”:
Stann Maraman and her husband Neal have built their longhorn breeding business, begun in 2017, on a foundation of outstanding genetics. Their operation is small and extremely selective, and requires tremendous attention to detail. Prepping cows for breeding requires meticulous record keeping on DNA, genetics, etc. Windows of fertility are exceptionally short and are predicted to the hour. Great care must be taken to create a safe environment for both animals and handlers (8-foot horns can do great harm!), and in this painting, Stann is securing one of her charges into the stocks to ensure safe keeping during whatever procedure is on tap.
The sweat, highly technical work, tender care, and prayer provided by Stann bears fruit by the addition of a new calf to the herd, extending the survival of this heritage breed which is part and parcel of the Great American West.
The goal of my work is to impart the Character expressed by my subjects over the decades. I’m a very traditional, atelier-trained artist, and believe firmly that the strength and value of a finished piece is driven by the drawings from which it evolved.
The Maraman’s were able to travel to Colorado for the opening of the show.
“I didn’t really know how this was going to turn out,” says Maraman, “but hope it promotes our breed to a new audience and shows the impact of our breed in promoting the western culture across the country!”
Canadian Ag Publication Features Lesyk and Lean Longhorn Beef
The Western Producer has been serving as Western Canada’s news source for farms and families for 100 years. The weekly newspaper recently highlighted Texas Longhorns and breeder Deb Lesyk, a TLBAA Director for Regions 1-2 and association member for over 30 years.
Under the headline of “Sask. breeder promotes lean Longhorn beef”, the article allowed Lesyk to extoll the benefits of the Texas Longhorn cattle not only for production qualities, but as a beef animal as well. She mentions the importance of preserving their heritage through the registry and promoted her regional affiliate as well as discussing their participation at Agribition.
It is a great example of how to respond when the media reaches out to learn more about Longhorns.

‘She gets the job done’: 8-year-old East Texas girl makes name for herself in cattle business
Elizabeth Pinkston Aug 26, 2024 Updated Aug 27, 2024
BECKVILLE — Kealyn Harrell already has made a name for herself in the Texas Longhorn business — at 8 years old.
Showing at national competitions and caring for animals at home, Kealyn continues to grow confidence and love for animals, said her mother, Bobbi Harrell. A third-grade student at Beckville Sunset Elementary School, she has her own business and her own cattle.
After Kealyn was flipped off of a miniature horse, she sustained a broken collarbone — and broken confidence when it came to livestock.
To read the rest of Kealyn’s story visit: https://www.news-journal.com/news/business/local/she-gets-the-job-done-8-yearold-east-texas-girl-makes-name-for-herself/article_dcf31e5f71c6-5395-aeea-89e7d00a7834.html
We also accept milestone announcements. Celebrating a special anniversary of “x” years in business? Have a family member known in the industry achieve a milestone at work? Feel free to submit it and lets us see if we can use it.
Don’t forget the kiddos! Achievements at school or in ag programs, taking opportunities to talk about Longhorns in class or through a project...send in a write up with photos and we’ll let others see your accomplishments and how you love to promote the Longhorn breed. You might just inspire someone else to present the breed in their area as well.
Send potential items to myra@tlbaa.org.
