From the Chairman of the Board The TLBAA World Show was held June 10-14 in the Fort Worth Stockyards Coliseum. We attracted a number of non-Longhorn visitors and had a chance to showcase our animals and the TLBAA. While there were unforeseen glitches, the participants seemed to enjoy the opportunity to visit the Stockyards area. The entire office staff, the show committee lead by Traci and Trigg Moore and many TLBAA volunteers did an outstanding job dealing with the change in venue and putting on a successful show. The Show Committee and staff are already working on an evaluation of the show and improvements for next year. The Committee is soliciting input from participants to help in planning for next year. If you participated and have any constructive ideas, please forward them to Pam@tlbaa.org and Trigg@triple-t-longhorns.com. Board of Directors member, Dora Thompson, led a strong, successful campaign that resulted in a substantial increase in sponsorships over last year. We appreciate Dora’s hard work and the generosity of those who sponsored! We have hired a Financial Manager, Donna Shimanek, who began work on June 24th. Donna comes to us with a strong bookkeeping/accounting background and has a BBA from the University of Alaska. Donna is hard at work cleaning up our books so that we can have accurate, factual, and meaningful financial statements. A search committee has been formed to find a General Manager/Executive Director for the TLBAA. The committee, led by Joel Lemley, has begun the search process following the Board approved procedures. Two new Board Members have been elected by the TLBAA Board of Directors to fill the positions vacated by Brent Bolen and Dale Hunt. Craig Perez has been elected to serve as Division C Region 15 Director. John Parmley has been elected to serve as Division B at-Large Director. The Building Committee, chaired by John Parmley, is working on preliminary floor plans. The Building Program will be discussed in a future letter. An e-mail address (Chairman@TLBAA.org) has been set up for the Chairman of the Board so all correspondence with the Chairman will remain in the archives of the TLBAA. The TLBT Bright Futures Scholarship Program awards scholarships of $1500.00 each annually to outstanding members of the TLBT who are graduating from high school and pursuing to further their education. The application process includes an application, a 400 word essay, a letter of recommendation from a teacher or community leader as well as a Longhorn breeder among other things. by Henry King Do history-makers make history, or do the events of history reveal the history-makers? Are certain families destined to be in the mix of historic events, or do those events occur because those families, those individuals brought them about? The right person at the right time with the right plan is epitomized by the Schreiner family’s multi-generational involvement with Texas Longhorn cattle. This progression of creative involvement will be on display at the September 15 auction at the historic Y.O. Ranch near Mountain Home, Texas. onghorn owners can look at their cattle and see the current culmination of a chain of events epitomized in their Longhorn cattle. Cattle that came to the New World from Spain and a boy born in France in 1838 are vital ingredients in the historic backtrail of the Longhorns in today’s pastures. That boy, Charles Armand Schreiner, was the fourth of five children born to Dr. Gustave Adolph and Charlotte Schreiner in the Alsace-Lorraine area of France. The family moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1852, where the father died shortly afterward and 14-year-old Charles worked to help his family get by. At age 16 he joined the Texas Rangers so that he could “earn a man’s wages.” In his new job, he got to see a lot of territory and was particularly impressed with the land along the Guadalupe River in what would become Kerr County. When his mother died two and a half years later, he resigned from the Rangers and got into the cattle business. In 1858, with his brother-in-law Casper Real, he bought a small store at Camp Verde where they contracted to supply beef and supplies to the military post fifteen miles south of Kerrville. While making frequent trips to San Antonio for supplies, Charles met Mary Magdalena Enderle, who became his bride in 1861, the year he joined the Confederacy. When he returned following the Civil War, his ranch and livestock were in shambles. He and his family endured two years of poverty and hardships and were forced to leave the ranch, movAugust 2012
ing to the struggling county seat of Kerrville. With the financial aid of August Faltin in 1869, he again opened a mercantile business and, benefitting from Texas’ recovery from the post-war recession, he was able to buy Faltin’s interest in 1879. The Longhorn cattle driven north to feed a beef-hungry appetite proved a bonanza that lifted the Texas economy while other exConfederate states struggled in the Reconstruction era. According to The Handbook of Texas Online, the continued Indian menace in the Kerrville area caused a home guard unit to be organized in 1875, and Schreiner was elected captain, a title he carried the rest of his life. He also served as both county and district clerk, and from 1868 to 1898 he served as county treasurer. The banking business which he conducted as a department in his store, the Charles Schreiner Company, grew so large that in 1893 he opened a separate banking facility which also bore his name. At first, Schreiner benefitted from the trail drive era mainly from the gold brought back to Texas by cowboys and cattlemen, and although there is no record that he went “up the trail” himself, it is said that over the years the captain and various partners sent more than 300,000 Longhorns up the Western Trail to Dodge City and laid the foundation for his empire. In addition to his mercantile, civic and livestock activities, Captain Schreiner also held many banking and railroad positions. His philanthropic contributions include what is now Schreiner College.

Beginning with five heifers and a bull from the Wildlife Refuge and private treaty purchases of Peeler and Yates cattle, the Y.O. eventually built the largest herd of quality Texas Longhorns in the nation.
Among his extensive land purchases, which eventually totaled more than 550,000 acres, was the present-day Y.O. Ranch, a 79,000-acre property 40 miles northwest of Kerrville. The ranch was given its name in 1880 when the captain bought the TaylorClements ranch, the 16,000 head of YO-branded cattle on it and the brand itself. Subsequent sales and land-swaps have reduced the ranch to a more compact and manageable 40,000 acres. The white limestone hills of the Y.O. sit atop the Edwards Plateau, spotted with live oak, mesquite and juniper, prickly-pear cactus and yucca. In his 79th year, anticipating enactment of federal inheritance laws, Captain Schreiner divided his holdings equally among his eight children. His youngest son, Walter R. Schreiner, became the owner of the Y.O. Ranch. World War I was in progress, and anyone in the ranching or farming business profited handsomely, but when the war ended, so did the booming economy. The Y.O. has experienced several periods of tough times when periodic dry spells hit the area. Not being blessed with the “mineral supplement” of petroleum deposits which benefitted many other Texas ranches, the Y.O. has survived and prospered due to the creativity and management skills of the generations of owners. Walter set that standard, doing what he could to make the ranch productive, and even though agriculture in the USA during the 1920s was a struggle, he stocked the ranch with Hereford cattle, Angora Goats and Delaine sheep. One of the most consequential decisions Walter made was his 1922 marriage to Myrtle Barton, whose strength, courage and leadership would sadly become necessary. Walter died in 1933, leaving the Y.O. to Myrtle and his only son, Charles Schreiner III (Charlie III) who was six years old. In her history of the ranch, Imprints on the Hills, Lorie A Woodward explains that Walter had an older brother named Charles Jr., whose only child was a daughter. To honor his father’s memory, Walter named his son Charles III. Walter’s death at the height of the Great Depression obliged Myrtle to take charge of the Y.O. She knew nothing about running a ranch, but she knew to ask advice of her brothers-in-law, Gus and Louie Schreiner. They lent expertise but never tried to run the ranch for her; when they advised what the price of cattle should be, she wouldn’t budge from that price to deal with prospective buyers. She not only kept the ranch afloat, but invented a new income stream in 1943 by leasing the ranch for hunting. That practice has since been adopted by almost every ranch in Texas. Charlie III was growing up and learning ranch responsibilities at his mother’s side during the Great Depression, World War II and into the early 1950s. The seven-year drought of the 1950s forced Charlie III to ship his cattle (he was now running Angus) and move his family to greener pastures in Montana. After four

years, the rains came and Charlie III, his family and his cattle returned to the Y.O. to stay. Realizing the need for cattle to handle the tough times, and aware of the role Texas Longhorns had played in the development of the west and the founding of the Y.O., in 1957 Charlie III began attending the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge auctions of surplus Longhorns. This herd had been founded in response to the threat of the near extinction of the Texas Longhorn. The U.S. Congress had authorized funds to gather a representative herd which was shipped to the Wildlife Refuge in 1927. As the herd grew, management practices included the reduction in numbers afforded by the auction. Held annually beginning in 1943 at the refuge near Lawton, Oklahoma, the event attracted Longhorn enthusiasts to swap tales, party and buy a few Longhorns. Along with other like-minded enthusiasts, Charlie III began pushing for an organization to represent and protect the interests of Longhorn owners and their cattle. The first membership meeting of the new Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America (TLBAA) was held in September 1964 at Lawton Oklahoma in conjunction with the refuge sale. Appropriately, Charlie Schreiner III was elected the first president, an office he held three years. In 1974, ten years after the formation of the TLBAA, the Y.O. conducted its first Texas Longhorn auction, managed by Alan Sparger. “My dad and Charlie III were close friends,” said Alan, “and they both collected Western Memorabilia. Because of my dad’s interest in the Old West, he got interested in Texas Longhorns, which he got from Charlie. I guess that’s what started my interest and involvement in the Texas Longhorn business. Every time I saw Charlie, I’d say ‘We’ve got to have a sale! We’ve got to have a sale!’ He put me off as long as he could, then one day he said, ‘We’re going to have a sale, and you’re going to be in charge of it.’ Of course, I didn’t know any more about that than I did flying an airplane, but we put that first sale together, and it was a very interesting cast of characters…and it was a very successful sale.” Graves Peeler and Walter Scott were among the foundational consignors, and Charlie’s friend Eddie Wood was the auctioneer. “I guess,” said Alan, “that’s how Eddie got into doing Longhorn sales on a regular basis.” “I’m not involved in this sale, but I encouraged them to do it and I will be there to support them. TLBT Member Speaks To Longhorn Drovers With Fort Worth Herd
Submitted by Kevin Rooker During the 25th Annual World Show, TLBT member Shelby Rooker gave her Gold Merit speech to the group of Drovers for the Fort Worth Herd. The TLBAA was honored to have Kristin Jaworski, Trail Boss for the Fort Worth Herd, as one of the the record book judges. She was able to listen to several of the presentations as well. After hearing Shelby's presentation on the history of The Texas Longhorn Breed, Kristin asked Shelby to give the presentation the following day to the Drovers of the Fort Worth Herd. As Kristin put it, "This is exactly what I have been teaching them. To hear this, with all the excitement and enthusiasm that Shelby has is just what they need.” The next day, Shelby gave the longer version of her speech (approximately 7 minutes long) to the Drovers. Kristin gathered the Drovers in the cow camp area and put a microphone on Shelby. They had no idea what they were about to hear, but it was quite obvious that once she started, they were hanging on every word. Her excitement about the history of the Longhorn Breed was quite contagious. After she was done, they spent several minutes asking her about her presentation, and one of the Drovers told her that she had been doing this for over 10 years, but after hearing her presentation, she was once again excited about sharing this information with the public. It was quite an experience for Shelby, and she has offered to give the presentation again anytime Kristin might need it.

The 2011-2012 Show Season was a great success. The numbers at some of the shows were a little less than usual, but I am sure that is due to the economy and drought of 2011. I would like to thank all of our sponsors, parents and grandparents. Your dedication is what makes the show circuit a success. I would also like to congratulate all of the Gold Merit, Livestock Judging, Quiz Bowl, Hall of Fame, Showmanship, and Class Winners for a job well done. You are a wonderful group of people and I enjoyed seeing all of you at the 2012 TLBT World Show! As this year comes to an end, we start a new show season and hope to make it a memorable year for all. My favorite characteristic of the Texas Longhorn breed is their unique horns. Texas Longhorns are known for their large horn growth. They have many different shapes and lengths which make them all unique. When and how was your experience in your first show? My first show experience was at the TLBGCA Brenham Spring Show in 2005. I remember showing a calf for a friend of ours because we did not have enough in our herd that were able to be shown. It was really fun and I placed first with the calf I had shown. How has showing and raising Texas Longhorns impacted your life? It has impacted my life in many ways. It has helped me to be a more responsible person which will help me in the future. I have learned to keep close records of my calf, take care of my calf, and many more life lessons that I may need in my future.

he battle against flies is constant, but there are ways to reduce these pests—without toxic chemicals. Different flies have different habits and behavior, so a combination of tactics is most effective. Houseflies and stable flies breed in manure and rotting organic matter such as old hay and bedding. Horn flies breed in cattle manure. Horseflies/deerflies breed in swampy areas and black flies breed in flowing water--often many miles away—so it’s impossible to control them at their breeding sites. Houseflies, stable flies and horn flies can be reduced by a combination of diligent clean-up—not letting manure or old hay/bedding build up to create breeding sites--and use of dung beetles or parasitic wasps. These tiny wasps lay eggs in manure and their larvae feed on fly larvae. Dung beetles break up fresh manure, making poor habitat for fly larvae. Fly control tactics are moving away from dependence on pesticides, due to concern for the environment and pests developing resistance to insecticides.
IMPORTANCE OF SANITATION - Manure and wasted hay should be spread thinly for quick drying, or composted. Properly composted material gets hot enough during fermentation/breakdown to kill fly eggs and

larvae. First line of defense in the battle against flies is to keep them from reproducing--by eliminating breeding sites. Stable flies (aggressive biters that cause irritation) don’t breed in straight cow or horse manure. They prefer decaying matter high in plant waste, such as wet hay or old bedding. Texas A&M University did a study several years ago and found that if people don’t clean up areas where they feed big bales this makes ideal breeding ground for flies. Researches estimated that the area around one big round feeder produces more than a million stable flies. In spring before flies emerge, one of the first things to do when weather warms up is to move feeders and/or spread wasted hay so it will dry, or put it into a big pile to start heating and composting. Otherwise, it may stay wet through summer, providing breeding sites for stable flies.
PREDATOR WASPS - Second line of defense is to keep fly larvae from hatching. Parasitic wasps can be purchased from several suppliers. These wasps can reduce fly larvae by 90 percent if you diligently reduce fly breeding sites and put out enough wasps to inhabit what’s left, and put out more wasps every 30 days through summer. Even though these wasps are present in the environment there are not enough to control the fly populaTexas Longhorn Trails
tion unless you tip the scales by putting out more wasps. A female fly lays 3 times the number of eggs laid by a wasp. These tiny nocturnal wasps spend their lives on or near manure. Adult wasps are harmless because they don’t sting or bite. Females search through manure and lay eggs in the pupae of houseflies, stable flies, horn flies and other flies that breed in manure. Wasp eggs hatch quicker than fly eggs and wasp larva use dormant fly maggots as food. Parasitic wasps give best control in dry climates and dry years. Number of wasps needed is based on number of animals. Wasp suppliers recommend releasing them early in the season before flies become numerous. A pen with one or two horses or cattle would need 5000 wasps each month. A larger herd needs 1000 to 2000 wasps per animal per month. Parasitic wasps will not make up for lack of sanitation, but used in conjunction with manure/bedding/hay cleanup can be helpful.
DUNG BEETLES – These insects spend their lives in manure. Adults use liquid components as nourishment and lay eggs in the manure pat. Hatching larvae consume manure. Some species remove and bury balls of manure containing their eggs. An active population of dung beetles can bury or destroy 95 percent of horn fly eggs and larvae and about 90 percent of other cattle parasites that are passed in or depend on manure. Even if fly eggs hatch, they can’t get back up to ground surface after dung beetles bury the manure. Birds are attracted to manure containing dung beetles, and tear the pats apart to eat them—which helps spread manure and disrupt fly larvae development. A single manure pat without dung beetles can generate 60 to 80 adult horn flies. Some types of dewormers and pesticides destroy dung beetles. Long-term control of flies is often better achieved by dung beetles (to degrade the manure) than by sporadic application of pesticides.
belly—where flies normally circle before landing to bite and feed. When flies hit the transparent sheets they ricochet into trays of water below, and drown. If you add a few drops of dishwashing soap to each tray, the soap breaks the surface tension of the water so the insects can’t float. They immediately sink and drown. Research showed this trap kills about one pound of biting flies per day. A 3-year research project at Cornell University, University of Florida and New York Pest Management compared 15 flytrap products and found this trap’s effectiveness was10 to 1 compared to other methods tried. The trap was also tested 3 years on New York dairy farms, looking at nonchemical approaches versus pesticides—which only work short term and may be toxic to other forms of life. The trap catches many flies in the evening when the dark portion is still warm after air cools off; the fly thinks this is an animal. It works best in an open area where flies see it from a distance. All you do is scoop out dead flies every other day or so with an aquarium net, add more water and soap if needed, and change the water every 2 weeks. Each tray holds about 3.5 gallons. You can put an electric wire around the trap so animals won’t rub on it. Many ranchers use rotational grazing and want something they can move from pasture to pasture. The new portable model has an aluminum frame (lightweight and easy to move) but is durable and can withstand 90 mph wind. Empty sandbags come with that unit to hold it steady in the wind; sandbags sit on the legs of the unit. Part of the criteria for participating in a new government conservation stewardship program is that ranchers use environmentally friendly fly control. These methods include fly predator wasps, traps for house and stable flies, traps for biting flies, walk-through traps for horn flies, fly vacuums, bug zappers or ways to enhance populations of martins, swallows, bats, etc. that eat flies. It has to be non-chemical livestock pest control. Dish soap for the biting flytrap is not harmful to the environment. Some organic farmers use a soap product made by Amway, called LOC (liquid organic concentrate), which is safe enough to drink.
FLY TRAP – Biting flies that come in from other areas can be killed before they attack your animals. One effective method is the Epps Biting Fly Trap™, invented by a cattleman in Oklahoma, now made and marketed by Horseline Products in Henderson, Tennessee. Biting flies (horseflies, deerflies, stable flies, black flies, mosquitoes, etc.) are attracted to large, dark objects such as the shape and silhouette of an animal, so the trap is a framework with a large dark portion and some transparent panels. The latter simulate air space above an animal and under its August 2012

January 24, 1940 – June 7, 2012 Timothy Joseph Miller, 72, died June 7, 2012, at Great Bend, KS, following a brief struggle with cancer. He was born Jan. 24, 1940, at El Dorado, KS, the son of Cyril W. "Cy" and Frances Cecelia (Muth) Miller. A Great Bend resident since 1946, living briefly in Texas and Southern California, he was a 1957 graduate of Great Bend High School, the owner and operator of Oilfield Manufacturer's Warehouse, Miller Plastics, Miller Ranch, and Charlie's Place, a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, was a founding board member and current president of Kansas Oil and Gas Museum, Kansas Independent Oil and Gas Association (KIOGA), Texas Longhorn Breeders Association President, the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development board of directors, Knights of Columbus Council #862, and Elks Lodge #1127. He was a Barton County Reserve Sheriff's Deputy and a recipient of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year Award in 2012. He married Marilyn Fern Betts in Great Bend, KS. They later divorced. He married Loretta K. Bradshaw May 25, 1985, in Eureka Springs, AR. Survivors include: his wife, Loretta K. Miller of the home; two sons, Sean Miller and his wife Julie of Great Bend, KS and Matthew Miller of Great Bend, KS; three daughters, Kim Sneath and her husband Terry of Great Bend, KS, Leslie Moseley and her husband Bill of The Woodlands, TX, and Lynn Bradshaw of Austin, TX; two brothers, Don R. Miller of Hutchinson, KS and Roch A. Miller of Ellinwood, KS; sister, Monica A. Bowers of Great Bend, KS; five grandchildren, Chance DeForest, Tyler DeForest, Ross Moseley, Zach Burford, and Katie Burford; and a great-grandchild, Riley Becker DeForest. He was preceded in death by a brother, Michael L. Miller. Memorial Mass was held on June 12, 2012, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Kansas Oil and Gas Museum or Tim Miller Hospice Memorial, in care of Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, KS. Spring Calving: 1. Remove bulls after 90-day breeding season (July 20 equals an April 30 date of birth) 2. Water is extremely important as temperature starts to rise. Make routine checks of the water supply. 3. Continue fly and tick control programs. 4. As grass matures, realize that the protein value decreases. The feeding of 2-3 pounds of a high protein supplement (30-40 percent crude protein content) will stimulate the digestion of the mature forage; therefore, the cattle will consume more forage and will maintain their body condition as winter approaches. 5. If additional summer grazing or hay is needed, fertilize improved grass pastures with 50 pounds of actual nitrogen per acre.
Fall Calving: If not previously completed: 1. Wean calves and select animals to be retained through yearling time. Breeders collecting weaning weight information should weigh all calves and adjust all weights to a 205 day of age equivalent. Within sex group, calculate a weaning weight ratio to be used as a selection criteria. Identify all calves by sire group to determine which sires are producing the superior calves. 2. Pregnancy check all females as well as check for unsoundness and udder problems for culling purposes. Consider culling females that are not bred, old or poor producers. 3.Vaccinate all heifer calves between 4 and 10 months of age for brucellosis. 4. All weaned calves should be vaccinated with a 7-way Clostridial bacterin, vaccinated for IBR-PI3-BVD and dewormed. Cull bull calves should be castrated prior to weaning. 5. Replacement heifers should definitely be vaccinated for blackleg, malignant edema, IBR, leptospirosis and brucellosis. August 2012

Prepare for herd bull selection and procurement. Conduct breeding soundness exams and fertility checks on all bulls prior to the breeding season.

Let’s hope we do not have a summer like last year’s and continue to pray for rain! On a better note, we are about to start a new show season. On Saturday, May 5th, 2012, the ETLA met at Diamond P Longhorn Ranch, owned by Danny and Carole Phillips located in Lindale, TX. The Philips graciously hosted our membership meeting in their home. We had a very productive and fun day, we ate a delicious pot-luck lunch, discussed many things, had an awesome show clinic thanks to our own Lana Hightower and Jamie Ollive, had a short grooming clinic, and went on a lovely ranch tour. Soon we will have a website up and running, if you have any information you would like to see on the website please talk to Jamie Ollive. If you missed the meeting, we discussed many things, including: more involvement with the youth, possible scholarship opportunities, the upcoming website, renewal of memberships, introduction of new members, voted on new directors and officer positions and renewed some of our current directors and board members, the successful Kaufman Police Department/ETLA show in Terrell, TX, the upcoming ETLA show in September, and sponsorship opportunities. *SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Our judge for the youth show is Ms. Julie Pack and Mr. Justin Hansard for Open and Free division. Remember the fair pays premiums, also division Champions and Reserve Grand Champions will win Western Platters, Grand and Reserve Champions will be awarded with belt buckles, and Showmanship winners will also be awarded with belt buckles. We are encouraging all to come and enjoy the show, youth, pee-wee, and open showmen, come and have a great time! The steer show will be on Saturday August 25th at 5:00 p.m. This year there will be a jackpot for the steer show for $2,500 or more. If you have a steer you may want to consider bringing him. The rest of the World Qualifying show including youth, open and loose classes will be held on Sunday August 26th. IN BOX Blue Eyed Baby Two Precious Babies Submitted by Jake & Kelly Allred, Flying A Longhorn Ranch This photo of our 3 day old longhorn bull calf named Cactus Jack, C.J. for short, and our precious 10 month old niece, Paisley Anne Bunting, was taken 4/26/12 at our ranch in Abilene, TX. We are very lucky to have a cow that allows us to do just about anything to her calves. She trusts us completely. We knew we could get Paisley close, but never did we expect that C.J. would let her sit on him for a few minutes worth of portraits. He never even flinched! Since this photo, C.J. is now a steer. His sire is CR Peso’s Poco Mas, BI81690 and his dam is WB Daisy, CI244196. Both parents are grulla, so we are expecting great things for this calf! He has all dark gray points, we just can’t tell his coat color/pattern as of yet. If he looks like his sire and has the disposition of both parents, we couldn’t be happier! A few years down the road, we may have a picture of Paisley riding C.J. if we decide to keep him and make him a riding steer.

My husband has been raising Longhorns for more than thirty years, and I have been raising them for more than ten. I thought I had been around the block. On the morning of April 23, 2012, I went out to check on my first calf heifers. Upon getting to the pen, I noticed a little calf hunkered down on the far side of the pen. I could see from more than 30 feet away that something was not normal with this calf's eyes, they looked cloudy. With fear running through my veins, I rushed across the pen to get a closer look. Let me back up for a moment to explain why I was so terrified. my 2011-2012 breeding season had been plagued with problems from the very beginning. First, most of my cows got into an unknown plant while out in mountain pasture that caused them to abort. Then in March of 2012 my favorite heifer went into labor and after 19 hours had an emergency episiotomy to pull a calf that had been dead for more than a month. I run a small herd, and all of my girls are my babies. I grieved for everyone of my lost calves. Now you understand why on this morning I was so scared. After getting close to my new little heifer calf, I realized that her eyes were not cloudy, but in fact very very light blue. Now my fear turned to is she blind? I watched her and her mom closely for the next 8 hours and with every passing hour my fear mounted that she was in fact blind. For in 8 hours this little calf had only moved less then 10 feet, nursed once, and only stood for no more than 2 minutes at a time. In all of my years of raising babies, all of them have hit the ground running, never had I seen a calf that acted the way this little girl did. I was now resigned to the fact that I had a blind calf. This went on for more than 36 hours, get up nurse, lay back down, never getting farther than a 10 ten foot circle, I was devastated. Then at 3 days old my little calf just stood up, looked around, and took off running at full speed. With my heart in my throat, I watched as she neared the fence, but to my shock, she slammed on her brakes before she hit the fence, spun around and took off back to momma just as fast as she could. She is not blind! I named her Lily and at almost 5 weeks old, she is thriving! She has not slowed down since.

TLBAA Branding Regulations The TLBAA requires that each animal registered have a private herd number and a holding brand. Your registration certificate application contains a space for these brands as well as the location of the bands on the animal, i.e. right hip, left hip, left shoulder, etc. The TLBAA does not require that your holding brand be registered with your state agency; however, we recommend that you check with your state to be sure you area in accordance with the laws there in. Registering your brand with the TLBAA does not get your brand registered in your state. Registration of brands varies from state to state. In Texas, you must register your brand at your county clerk’s office. In Mississippi, brands should be registered with the Brands Registrar with the Bureau of the Highway Patrol. Check with your local veterinarian, state cattleman’s association or your county extension agent to locate the agency that registers brands. Also ask
them how often your brand must be renewed. The Private Herd number, or PH number, as it is more commonly called, is often misunderstood. While it is required for all registered animals, the TLBAA office does not assign these numbers. The PH number is your own personal identification system to assist you in keeping each individual animal’s records. Any system can be used. A common practice is the “Three Numeral System”. The first number is usually the last numeral of the year (9 for 2009, for example). The next two numbers are usually in sequence of the arrival of the offspring. For instance, the first calf born in the year 2009 could be numbered 901. With a simple odd/even number modification, a breeder can add more information to his PH numbering system. A common method is to assign bull calves odd numbers and heifer calves even numbers. For instance, a PH number of 903

could tell a breeder that the animal number he is referring to is the third offspring bull calf born in 2009. The third female offspring would be 904. Roman numerals or letters of the alphabet are not accepted for use as private herd numbers. The PH number is the animal’s permanent number and cannot be changed. The number must be branded on the animal, along with the breeder’s holding brand, before application is submitted to the TLBAA office for registration. A breeder is not allowed to duplicate the same number on two different animals within the same herd. Anyone requiring assistance with a PH numbering system should contact the TLBAA office for assistance. If you have made an error in assigning a PH number, you can get assistance from the office in correcting the problem.
