EDITOR’S NOTES OH THE PLACES WE CAN GO While rural communities and livestock producers in general tend to be viewed as one big family, the bigger picture pales in comparison to the Texas Longhorn family. I have watched this industry, this amazing world, from the viewpoint of an objective observer for over 20 years now. Over time, I’ve researched a history that goes beyond bloodlines and into the lives that make up this association. There is an amazing common thread that, even in the midst of heated debate, rises above it all… the absolute love of the Texas Longhorn. I have watched tough businessmen absolutely melt talking about a favorite cow. I’ve heard countless stories of how gazing out over a pasture of Longhorns, feeding them cubes from your hand melts stress away. And no matter how you choose to participate in the Longhorn industry, the willingness of existing owners/breeders to share what they know, to welcome you into the fold, and to encourage you in your endeavors is invaluable when encouraging potential new breeders to participate. A good example of an event where many came together and helped create something bigger than themselves is found in these pages – the TLBAA World Expo wrap-up. While there are different opinions on everything from judges to body types and horn length, it is all secondary to giving each other a hand preparing for the ring, helping new people learn the ropes and stepping in when a need is seen. The willingness of our membership to help one another goes a step further during our major events. The board, the committees, and volunteers all help enable a very small staff to accomplish great things. On behalf of the whole staff I thank each of you who step up to help where you can at the events or during the planning stages. Turn to pgs 42-43 to see the names of those who helped make the Expo a success. Note that the lists are long. Be sure to thank all those listed if you had a good time. You have two more chances to be a part of exciting events in the near future. The TLBAA Horn Showcase is in October and Texas Longhorn Weekend falls soon after in January. You can find entry and sponsorship information for the Horn Showcase starting on pg. 51. Look quickly, because that entry deadline is right upon us – August 16th. One important part of the January event is recognizing recipients of the TLBAA Special Awards and the TLBF Hall of Fame. Information on how to nominate deserving individuals can be found on pgs. 58-60. Deadlines for the Eddie Wood Cowtown Classic will be published later. Be sure to watch E-Trails for updates on these events. What’s E-Trails? It is a digital newsletter that comes to your inbox every Friday. Signing up is easy at www.tlbaa.org. Simply click the drag down item “E-Trails” on the very top menu bar. It is a weekly source of updates and changes as events get nearer. If you prefer, each event has a page on the TLBAA website as well as event updates on Facebook. You can find information in Trails Magazine as well. If you can’t find the information you’re looking for, give the office a call and we’ll be happy to help you. We hope to see you at a Longhorn family gathDEADLINE: ering soon! TLBAA World Expo T he T exas L onghorn E xposition
featuring the
Record numbers
of cattle and entries as well as attendees made this year’s Texas Longhorn Exposition one to remember. From a new competition for the TLBT members to the last minute of the banquet with close to 500 in attendance, the week included something for everyone and resulted in many smiling faces. • 839 Total Entries Cover 25% • 602 Head of Cattle Cover 25% • 420 Youth Entries C33% • 183 Open Haltered Entries C15% • 50 Free Entries same • 106 Futurity Entries C51% • 43 Trophy Steer Entries C86% The barns were busy Wednesday with cattle arriving, people checking in and everyone settling in. The TLBT youth got their first taste of competition that afternoon with a livestock judging contest and everyone got together that evening for a chance to eat and wind down at the barn party.

Thursday, the TLBT Youth kicked off with a group photo and show ring procedure meeting and then rolled into a full day of competition in the ring. Youth Judge Randy Allgood had lots of words of wisdom for the youth as he placed each class. At 6 p.m. a different style of showing took place in the form of the Texas Gold Futurity. Instead of being evaluated against each other in the show ring, these Longhorns were judged one at a time by class and scored against the judges’ ideal. Friday morning saw the youth participating in Gold Merit competition, which included giving speeches and having their project books evaluated. In the ring, the free division was being presented to judge Rodney Finch. After the free miniature classes, there was a general membership meeting held to allow members to pose questions to committee chairs and board members about current programs and proposals. The TLBT also met for their annual meeting and elected new officers for the coming show year. The Senior Sale this year brought plenty of excitement as five Longhorns sold, raising a total of $15,375 to go towards

further education for those participating. A solemn moment followed the sale as those breeders who left us since last year’s World Expo were remembered. The riderless horse and beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace made the memorial moment special. When the lights went up, it was time for a crowd favorite, especially for those visiting new to Longhorns - the Trophy Steer show. When those older steers all gather in the ring it is a sight to behold. The last day of competition saw the adults take to the ring along with the youth for the Open Haltered Show. From young heifers to older bulls, judge Kipp Brown had a lot of quality animals to evaluate. The day wrapped up with the Haltered Miniature classes and then a tired but happy crowd headed to the banquet. The banquet was a perfect wrap for the weekend, with good food, fellowship, a fun silent auction with lots of items to bid on and many awards presented. You know an event has wrapped up well when you hear folks say “I can’t wait until next year.” Neither can we.

Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow
Presidents
Message
As most of you know, my name is Gabby Curtis and I am pumped to serve the TLBT as president again this year. This last year, the officers and board accomplished some great things. Therefore, I know we will do even better this year. This year, as a leader in this organization, I want to focus on advocacy. What do I mean exactly? I am a passionate member of the TLBT and I have a deep love for this breed. I believe the beautiful breed of the Texas Longhorn has so much potential, and as a member I need to promote the breed. I want our board and organization to really focus on that this year because there is so much outside of the Longhorn Circuit. I will strive to help members advocate and inform others of the quality our breed possesses and also of the opportunities the TLBT provides. People often question the purpose of the Texas Longhorn. As members of this organization, we all need to know that purpose to be able to spread our involvement further. So what IS the purpose of the Texas Longhorn? I think it’s pretty simple. There’s not a longhorn person I know that doesn’t like longhorn meat. Their purpose is really in the end.... to be marketed or to be put out in the pasture for land art. Now one question..... how many steers are usually in the junior division (in the show circuit)? Quite a few actually. Think about it, all of the steers in the junior division are all first year steers. Then, it goes to senior steers. Their second year they’ll be in classes 30, 31, and 32. You’ll soon realize that number of steers showing begins to drop. Those three classes are never as large as the whole junior division. Then, it goes to your third year class, class 33. Where all of those steers in the first place were all in a division, now they’re in a class. Where in the division let’s say there were close to 70. When in class 33 their final year in youth there are 30 tops. That is a large drop in steers. The question is, where do those steers go? Now, not all of them are land art right? Because they’d probably still be showing in the third year class. If your answer is they were slaughtered, you’re probably correct. The meat of a Texas Longhorn is extremely high quality and really the end result of all male cattle is to be marketed. Therefore, the agricultural purpose of a Longhorn steer is beef and, if they become trophy steers, then land art. However, from the large drop in steer classes we can tell there aren’t as many trophy steers. I hope as members of this organization, we can all advocate. Be confident in yourself as you advocate but also know you’re a resource not an expert. There are always resources you can learn from if anyone asks you something you don’t know. I wish you all the best as you begin or continue this journey of advocating. I am so excited to begin another year as TLBT President. This organization is really my second family!
Gabby Curtis

Marketing
By Molly Clubb & Holly Williams
Yes, You Do Need an Instagram: Driving Traffic to Your New Instagram & How to Use Hashtags By this point in your Social Media journey you’ve probably been on Facebook for quite some time and experienced firsthand the benefits it can have on marketing your Longhorns. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the combination of Instagram and Longhorn breeders, even though Instagram has 1 billion active monthly users and 500 million daily users! And, the most appealing feature of Instagram? It’s photo based! You literally cannot make a post to Instagram without a photo. Every Longhorn breeder knows there’s nothing more iconic than a well-taken photo of a majestic Texas Longhorn standing in a field of blue bonnets or a pasture full of colorful babies and their long-horned mamas at sunset. If your business or ranch isn’t utilizing this free and easy social tool, you’re missing out on finding a new audience of potential customers and business partners.
eral Instagram audience is looking for eye-pleasing photographs with minimal content, not memes, hard to read documents, etc. Many of the posts made to forums or groups will not translate over to Instagram well.
HASHTAGS GET RESULTS – IT’S PROVEN!
A unique feature on Instagram is the ability to follow hashtags and the ease at which you can search and explore them. Instagram allows you to use up to 30 hashtags on each post which gives you 30 opportunities to reach different niches, demographics, trendy topics, potential followers and customers. Even using one hashtag on your post will increase your average engagement up 12.6%. Users can choose to follow specific hashtags on Instagram, which allows them to see posts that use those hashtags whether they follow the user or not. Very nifty for businesses and users trying to reach new eyes or share niche content. A few key things to rememBUT I ALREADY HAVE A ber when using hashtags, don’t FACEBOOK… be afraid to get specific, but How is Instagram any difdon’t make it too long. Multiple ferent from Facebook? For example, if you’re trying to target an audience Facebook and Instagram are owned by the same full of cattle ranchers using the hashtag #MondayMoparent company, and a perk of that is that you’re able tivation, right now that tag has over 16 million posts atto connect your profiles on the separate platforms totached to it. QUALITY VISUAL CONTENT This is so important for Instagram! More than 50 billion photos have been uploaded to Instagram, and each day another 100+ million photos and videos are being added to that number. Videos on Instagram are receiving twice as much engagement of photos than on ANY other social platform! To build a quality presence and representation of your business online, you need to have quality visual content. If your pictures look unprofessional, your business will seem unprofessional. These days, this doesn’t have to be a hard task. With the constantly improving cell phone cameras and the rise of the creative side hustle, you can easily take high quality photos yourself or hire someone to take them for you.
ALL ABOUT THE CAPTIONS Be concise. Don’t sell too hard. Speak to followers as if they’re your friend. Social media is all about connecting and creating relationships. If you’re creating content that sounds too sales-y, you’re not going to attract and retain the audience you want. Remember to use your hashtags and don’t be afraid of emojis! 50% of Instagram captions and comments include emojis. And yes, we know, we’re still waiting for that true Longhorn emoji too!
48 | August 2019
WHAT ABOUT WEBSITE TRAFFIC? Instagram does not allow photo captions to include links. So how do you get likes to convert to web traffic? No links in captions, no problem. Be sure to include a link to your website, an email address, and a phone number in your Instagram bio so there are no loose ends on how a potential lead can find you. If you’re constantly posting content that requires a link, for example you have a blog on your website, there are services online that allow you to use one link that then redirects the user to all your content links. A few of these include LinkTree, many.link, ContactInBio, or you could even create your own page on your site! Instagram is an easy and free way for you to reach a bigger audience and gain more customers. So, if your business doesn’t already have an account, what are you waiting for? Instagram isn’t scary and it doesn’t have to be a huge time investment if you use the right tools. Social media is a way to develop relationships and create brand loyalty, so have fun with it! There are already hundreds of Longhorn breeders on Instagram. Why not join them? Molly Clubb is the founder of Hired Hand Software where Holly Williams is a Social Media Specialist. PRINCE AND PRINCESS COMPETITION RETURNS FOR 2019 The competitions will be judged solely by the affiliates and there will not be a cumulative point system. The affiliates will place each of the entries and from those scores the semi-finalists will be selected. It then becomes a new contest again, as previous points are erased, and the affiliates will place the semi-finalists with the winners announced in January at the Longhorn weekend banquet. The entry deadline has been extended to allow more time for the affiliates to select their animals at summer shows and to get photos taken that compliment the animal. Competition is open to: • 2018 TLBAA registered heifers and bulls • Owners must be current active TLBAA members and must belong to the affiliate their animal represents.
• Entry fee is $100/animal and each affiliate is allowed one entry per competition. • Pictures must be: minimum 3 x 5 inches, 300 dpi. Must be sent with no compression, at large or original size, depending on your email program’s or phone’s options • Nothing in the picture’s background can indicate where the animal may have won or where they are located. Photos are the most important factor in this competition as the animals are judged by the pictures submitted. • Entry deadline is Monday September 23, 2019. • For further information or any questions please contact Deb Lesyk. Let’s make 2019 the best year with the most entries ever in the Affiliate Competitions.

*NEW* EXHIBITOR’S CHOICE
• Awarded to the owner who has the most animals entered and officially measured for the Horn Showcase. • There will be one point awarded for each animal entered in a measuring class. • Animals can be measured in Lawton or at satellite locations. • Animals must be listed with the same ownership name. Ownerships listed in a single name or two names associated with a ranch name will be considered as the same ownership. • Partnerships will be considered a separate ownership. • In the event of a tie, all winning owners will be declared as winners and receive award. Examples: John Smith, Ann Smith, John & Ann Smith, or Smith Longhorns will all be considered as the same ownership. (John or Ann) Smith/Brown Partnership will be considered a separate ownership.
• Get of Sire and Produce of Dam will each offer a Junior Division and a Senior Division. • Each Division is based on the age of the offspring of the animal entered. The Junior Division consists of offspring between the ages of two and five years of age. The Senior Division consists of offspring six years and older. • Sires must have three offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite. • Dams must have two offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite. • Both living and deceased bulls and cows can be entered since entries are based on measurements of offspring. • Scoring for each animal will be computed by adding the values of TTT, TH and Composite of all three offspring for a bull or both offspring for a cow. The bull or cow with the highest value of the total added measurements amongst offspring will be the winner. • Animals do not need to be present to compete in this class – can be measured at a satellite or in Lawton. • Only breeding animals (Bulls or Cows) can compete as offspring. • Offspring may be produced by natural breeding, artificial insemination or embryo transfer.
HORN SHOWCASE SUPERIOR AWARD
• One bull and one female will be chosen based on popular vote. • Animals must be present in Lawton to be eligible. • Ballots will be available at the TLBAA desk during the event for voting.
This innovative award showcases our most elite animals that possess the total package we all strive for. To achieve the Superior Award, animals are required to compete in the horn measurement contest, as well as be judged on conformation in the Horn Showcase Futurity. • To win the Superior Award, you must receive the smallest number in the points system. 1st is granted 1 point. 2nd granted 2 points, and so on. This will be the same for the Futurity as well as horn measurement. • In the Futurity, you must place in the top three in your class to be eligible to compete for the Superior Award, as well as placing in the top 3 in any measurement class (Tip to Tip, Total Horn, or Twist for females) or (Tip to Tip or Total Horn for bulls) to be eligible. • Example of how Superior animal is awarded: Animal with the lowest number of points wins “Superior.” If there is a tie for Superior, then both animals will be awarded.
HORN SHOWCASE FUTURITY
BULL ALLEY
ULTIMATE COW & BULL AWARD
The TLBAA HSC Futurity is set up by age divisions to allow breeders the opportunity to exhibit the total package animals that represent their breeding operation. • There is a 75% cash payout based on the class size. Payout will go to the top 20% of the class. • Animals must be entered in at least one horn measurement contest. • Animals will enter the ring based on age. Youngest to oldest. When the animal being exhibited walks into the ring, the 5 judge panel will be given the animals DOB, and a horn measurement taken from the previous day. It will be a TTT, TH, Twist for the females, and a TTT, or TH for the males in the contest. • With the 5 judge panel, the high score and the low score will be thrown out and the remaining three judges will be added together for the final score. In the event of a tie there will be a tie breaker judge selected in advance. That judge’s score will be the tie breaker in the event of a tie. • Animals must measure in at least one measurement class to participate in Futurity as well as be eligible for a Superior Award.
For More Information/Contact
• Bulls must be TLBAA A.I. certified and have an A.I. certified number to sell semen and participate in most straws sold. • Bulls that are living must be present in Lawton, OK; deceased bulls may be entered for semen sales only. (Deceased bulls may have their offspring on site to represent them) • Each owner should bring a semen tank with semen for sale or have semen sent to Champion Genetics. The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award
A native Texan, Dave Evans entered the Texas Longhorn industry in 1977, establishing the Yellow Pine Ranch at Cuchara, CO. He and his wife, Billicarole, quickly became enthusiastic about the breed and additional ranches were purchased to supplement the original ranch. Evans served on the Board of Directors of both the TLBAA and the Mountain & Plains Texas Longhorn Association. He also served terms as TLBAA Vice-President. He was a founding partner and host of the Colorado National Texas Longhorn Sale, a record-breaking event when it started in 1981, which continued to be one of the industry’s major events for many years. From the start, Evans realized the necessity of using the best bulls available in the breed in order to develop a top herd. His goal was to breed for consistent size as well as correctness and outstanding horns. He purchased Texas Ranger JP in 1980, and then Dixie Rebel and Major Investment. In 1986, Evans acquired CT Spoty Ruler, the bull he considered to be the best he’d ever owned. Before his untimely death, Evans had succeeded in breeding a herd of Texas Longhorns that were well recognized in the breed. It is therefore a significant honor to be a recipient of this award, named in honor of this dedicated Longhorn breeder. This award is given to individuals who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of Texas Longhorn cattle through their breeding program.

The Jack Phillips Award
The Jack Phillips Award is named after former TLBAA President Jack Phillips who was a quiet, yet forceful presence in the TLBAA. The awards honors individuals who have worked selflessly for the Longhorn and breeders alike, without recognition. It is hoped that Affiliate Presidents will encourage members to nominate individuals who have fulfilled this criteria but all members of the TLBAA are encouraged to makes nominations.

Elmer Parker Lifetime Achievement Award Lifetime Devotion to the Texas Longhorn Breed and Its Breeders Elmer Parker was a longtime employee and manager of the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge Longhorn herd. Parker joined the staff at the Refuge in 1946, learning from the previous Longhorn managers: Earl Drummond, Heck Schrader and Joe Bill Lee. In 1968, he took over the responsibilities of the Longhorns at the Refuge and continued until his retirement in 1981. Thus, the continuity of Longhorn expertise at the Refuge continued for more than half a century. The Parker Brown color designation on Longhorn registrations was named after Elmer Parker – the dark brown, almost black color, with lighter dorsal stripe, was one of his favorite colors. This award honors those members, who have been dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Longhorn breed, qualities that Parker was known for.

Nominee must have been an outstanding contributor over a period of years either as a breeder, competitor or contributor to the Texas Longhorn breed. The nominee should have been or is currently a member of the TLBAA. A nominee may be either living or deceased. NOMINATION PROCESS Nomination of an individual must be submitted using the form provided by TLBAF. Incomplete nominations will not be accepted. A nomination of a person may be reviewed by the Hall of Fame Committee each year for a maximum of three years; however, the nomination must be resubmitted each year. Beef
Texas Premium Certified F1 Beef Program Begins August 1 The new F1 program was designed to increase interest in registered Texas Longhorn females for use in beef programs traditionally built around other cattle breeds. Texas Longhorn females have long been prized for their reproductive and mothering abilities. The F1 program will build recognition both within the Longhorn industry and in the broader cattle industry of the marketability of the offspring of a registered Texas Longhorn female and a registered single breed beef bull of an approved breed. (List to be posted soon) Female offspring will be registered as Texas Premium Certified F1 and registration papers will be issued. To be registered, the F1 female must be polled or dehorned, and be branded with a holding brand and private herd number. The cost will be the same as standard registrations for a weanling heifer, $15.
ability to buy additional brochures at a discounted rate. Your name and contact info will also be included on the TLBAA website in a directory of Registered Texas Longhorn Beef Producers. You may also request the official Beef Producer logo to utilize in your marketing. The committee overseeing the program is utilizing funds to help market both the longhorn beef as a product and registered Texas Longhorns as desirable beef cattle outside of the Texas Longhorn industry.
HOW DOES THIS AFFECT THE REGISTERED TEXAS LONGHORN BEEF PRODUCER PROGRAM? The Registered Texas Longhorn Beef Producer Program can easily co-exist in a program where F1’s are being raised. The improtance is in how you manage your program. Any meat being sold as Registered Texas Longhorn Beef and marketed with the Registered Texas Longhorn Beef Producer logo must be out of two Registered Texas Longhorn parents. As long as you practice good herdsmanship and properly document parentage of animals, you can successfully participate in both programs. Many breeders currently divide herds into groups based on potential future use such as beef, show or horn production to make the most of every grade of cattle they own. While the F1 program fees are simply the registration cost, the Beef Producer program requires a $75 membership fee to join the program for one year. The benefits of membership include 150 free Registered Texas Longhorn Beef Brochures to help market your product, as well as the

This is a BIG month for the GPTLA! The Central States Fair has embraced Texas Longhorn events as a new “tradition”. This month marks our FOURTH World Qualifying Longhorn Show (August 18th). New events at this year’s fair are the Regional Horn Measurement Competition (August 16th) and the Top Hand Invitational Longhorn Sale (August 17th). More info on all of these events at www.ghowie.com
The Upper Midwest is an exciting and growing market for Longhorn producers. Breeders from across the nation are participating this year: As far south as Texas and as far west as Oregon. Together with breeders from our own region, this will be the best yet! GPTLA membership recruitment will be a focus at these events. A few people working together can accomplish great things. We want a few more dedicated Longhorn enthusiasts to join our efforts to help producers and continue to grow this market. Membership is available to EVERYONE. Annual membership dues are $ 25.00 for Active, $ 5.00 for Jr., $ 15.00 for Associate or Lifetime membership $250.00 Please send a check for your membership, along with your name, address, phone and email address to Great Plains Texas Longhorn Association, 15372 Antelope Creek Rd, Rapid City, SD, 57703 The GPTLA is also hosting an official Horn Showcase Satellite Measurement on September 28th at the Gordon Howie Ranch, 15372 Antelope Creek Rd, Rapid City, SD. Measuring begins at 10:00 am, lunch to follow. Thanks to all who have joined us on this exciting new Longhorn adventure!!!
Plans are for a different format at Agribition in November this year, we have decided to try a World Qualifying Show and the application has been sent to the TLBAA office. Also added this year is a Canada/USA Challenge Class for Non Haltered Females Born in 2016. Why did we choose 2016? The three year olds are often overshadowed by the four year olds they show against. This way we will have a DEB LESYK yearling heifer jackpot, and the Challenge Class to offer spectators an extra look at our PRESIDENT breed during the time we are at the event. More information will follow, the jackpot 306-867-9427 and challenge are separate entries, but the animals must also be shown in the World Qualifying Show. We hope to entice some breeders from the northern states to join us. We continue to raise funds to support the Canadian National Texas Longhorn Show at Agribition, and we will be having a raffle. Christine Fossum is currently working on this and will provide some information in our next report.
