Chairman’s Message Greetings, Hard to believe that we are in August. My, how this year has flown by. Hope you all are doing well and have stayed healthy this year. The Trails Magazine has something for everyone. I know that Myra and Trace can fix your ranch up with a beautiful ad and at good prices. They are putting out a really nice magazine. Also, don’t forget to give Kate a call at the office and get your memberships renewed. It’s that time of the year. The TLBAA World Expo 2021 is in the books and was a great event. The World Expo had a great turnout with the number of entries and participants, and the futurity was great, too. We had a short General Membership meeting and good turnout for that. I really want to thank Pam Robison, Sales and Events Coordinator and the World Show Committee for a tremendous effort and lots of hard work pulling this off. Also to the rest of the TLBAA Staff for their time and work on this event. And a really big thank you to all the members and exhibitors for them wanting to be there and show. “It takes a village” The wrap-up of the event starts on page 14. The Horn Showcase will be November 11-13, 2021, and for the first time in several years, is back in Fort Worth. We are taking entries for the Select Sale, the futurity, Bull Alley and measuring classes. You still have time to get your entries in for these and your support will be greatly appreciated in making the Horn Showcase happen. It is the largest, and only, measuring event in the country and a great way to showcase your animals, promote your herd sires and sell semen, and enjoy the fun time competing in the futurity. Should be a great weekend for all to enjoy, visit and catch up with old friends and meet some new ones. Sponsorship packages are available and you can contact Pam Robison at the office, or any of the committee members if you would chose to support the event. To my Longhorn Family, Thank You,

Keith Du Bose, Chairman of the Board Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America

About the Cover: Discovery Skywalker CP (Sandollar Discovery x TC3 Girlee Girl), owned by Danley Cattle, Inc., is the 2021 TLBAA World Grand Champion Bull. His show career started in this same arena last year. He has since traveled many miles and gone on to win 5 Grand Champion Bull titles, including World Grand Champion Bull, 7 Reserve Grand Champion titles, 3 Senior Champion titles, 2 Reserve Senior Champion Bull titles, 23 first place ribbons and 1st place Hall of Fame Bull. To say he holds a special place in all of our hearts is an understatement. We can’t wait to see his calves hit the ground. EDITOR’S NOTES WHAT A WORLD (SHOW, THAT IS) All the TLBAA World Expo results are here! Sorry for the delay in them reaching your door. I had a little run in with Covid, but the Trails team hit the ground running as soon as I recovered. Hopefully this issue isn’t too late hitting your hands. There’s lots to see from all the TLBT National Youth Show results, TLBAA World Show results, all kinds of awards, Texas Gold Futurity results and lots of great photos. We had a good crowd this year. If you were not a part of the event, start making plans to join us next year. There’s lots of ways to participate or you can just come observe some great cattle competing and meet some great folks. If you’ve been in the show world long you’ve heard the name Bob Moore at some point. Devin Culpepper graciously shared her writing with us, sharing insights into the life of a man that made quite and impact in the show world as well as in the association. You can find the story on pg. 38. Horn Showcase is ramping up and there’s time to get your entries in for measuring, futurity and bull alley. If you want to learn how it all works or find entry forms all you need to know can be found on pgs. 43-49. It’s a fun event and if you can’t travel to Fort Worth, TX, there is most likely a satellite within an easy drive of you. Join in the fun. Have you considered how much nutrition your hay actually provides your cattle? You should! If you’ve heard of forage analysis but aren’t quite sure how to go about it, turn to pg. 50 for some great information. It’s important to think about as almost all breeders have to feed forage at some point in the year. I WANT COLORFUL CALF ENTRIES! The Roger Damrow Colorful Calf Contest is on again this year (see pg. 53). There is no cheaper way to get your production in front of people in Trails Magazine. A $20 entry fee per calf gaurantees publication in the March 2022 Trails and, your 2021 calf may win the cover spot! As long as the calf is out of two TLBAA registered parents they are eligible, as many may need to enter before the calf is old enough to be branded, and brands are required for registration. Get those cameras out and start shooting! I’ve been around quite a few years and I have met and heard of so many outstanding individuals. I know that you know some too. Now is the time to nominate those special people who have made an impact on the Texas Longhorn Breed and on other fellow breeders. You can find criteria and forms for the TLBAA Special Awards and the TLBF Hall of Fame starting on pg. 60. Please participate! Even being nominated is an honor. Take a few minutes and get’er done. Until next month,

Blessings,

Photos by Show Champions and Trace Neal Photos available for purchase at www.showchampions.com

Another Great Year In The Books Entries and interest continued to be high for this year’s Texas Longhorn Exposition as we continued to work toward bringing everything back to normal. The week included something for everyone and resulted in many smiling faces. The total entries were strong with over 920 which includes the Miniature Longhorns making a splash with their new qualifying classes. Most individual divisions were within 10% of previous years: • 921 Total Entries Increase of 9% • 602 Head of Cattle Increase of over 6% • 399 Youth Entries • 201 Open Haltered Entries • 47 Non-Haltered Entries • 92 Futurity Entries • 29 Trophy Steer Entries • 108 Miniature Entries Increase of over 225%! • 45 Miniature Exhibition Entries The barns were busy Wednesday with cattle arriving, people checking in and everyone settling in. The TLBT youth got their first taste of competition that afternoon with a livestock judging contest and everyone got together that evening for a chance to eat and wind down at the barn party.

Thursday, the TLBT Youth kicked off with a group photo and show ring procedure meeting and then rolled into a full day of competition in the ring. Youth Judge Ryan Cummins had words of wisdom for the youth at the end of the day during showmanship. At 4 p.m. a different style of showing took place in the form of the Texas Gold Futurity. Instead of being evaluated against each other in the show ring, these Longhorns were judged one at a time by class and scored against the judges’ ideal. Futurity judges Cindy Dennis, John Helm, Matt McGuire, Ross Ohlendorf and Kathy Palladini were up to the task of appraising the animals in this event. Friday morning saw the youth participating in Gold Merit competition, which included giving speeches and having their project books evaluated. In the ring, the Non-Haltered division was being presented to judge Scott Schaake. After the Non-Haltered Miniature classes, there was a general membership meeting held to allow members to pose questions to committee chairs and board members about current programs and proposals. The TLBT also met for their annual meeting and elected new officers for the coming show year. The Se-

nior Sale this year brought plenty of excitement as six Longhorn heifers sold, raising a total of $43,500 to go towards the future endeavors of those youth participating. A solemn moment followed the sale as those breeders who left us since last year’s World Expo were remembered. The riderless horse and beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace made the memorial moment special. When the gates opened, it was time for a crowd favorite, especially for those visiting new to Longhorns - the Trophy Steer show. When those older steers all gather in the ring it is a sight to behold. The last day of competition saw the adults take to the ring along with the youth for the Open Haltered Show. From young heifers to older bulls, judge Tyler Braud had a lot quality animals to evaluate. The day wrapped up with the large Haltered Miniature classes and then a tired but happy crowd headed to the banquet. The banquet was a perfect wrap for the weekend, with good food, fellowship, a fun silent and live auction with lots of items to bid on and many awards presented. You know an event has wrapped up well when you hear folks say “I can’t wait until next year.” Neither can we.

Presidents

Message

The 2021-2022 show season is underway and the 2021 World Show will soon be a distant memory. Many of us worked so hard last year to obtain our individual goals. Goals included winning class buckles, placing in Hall of Fame, public speaking for Gold Merit, making it through the big ring without stumbling, selling a senior sale heifer, learning a new line dance at the banquet, helping behind the scenes of a show…. Whatever the goal for you was, I hope that you welcomed any adversity and celebrated all your prosperity. As the season changes, we look forward to World Show 2022. Do you have the same goals for 2022 that you did for 2021? Or is this the season you embrace change, rework your goals and adjust your game plan. For me, and at least another dozen TLBT members, this will be our final season as TLBT youth. I begin this season as your TLBT President for the second year and I am also a senior in high school. I will end this show season facing new challenges, new goals and certainly a season of change. Class of 2022 has been a dream for many years and the year is finally here! As we move through the weekends of shows, seminars, field days and youth events during this coming season, I hope you enjoy each success, learn from adversity and keep working toward your goals. #letsgooutwithabang

My name is Alyssa Laffin. I am 18 years old. I am attending Mabank High School. I am a member of the Mabank FFA Veterinary med program. My goal is to become a vet assistant after high school. I started showing Longhorns my freshman year of high school and fell in love with the breed and the people in the community. Showing Longhorns has been the most wonderful thing about my life. I have experienced so much personal growth in this community and it has changed my life for the better. This year is my last year showing Longhorns and it breaks my heart knowing I can’t show as a youth anymore. #BuildingABetterTomorrow

Breeders

His Walls Were Purple:

Bob Moore A certain amount of mystique comes with the idea of a legacy. I met my, then future, husband in 2006 and I could have never dreamed what I would be getting myself into in the coming years. The name Bob Moore has been sprinkled throughout our family’s conversations. We have a lot of cattle conversations in my family and the more I listened the more this name came up. When I married in 2015 and even up until writing this, I 1992 World Grand Champion Female: Rompers, bred and owned by Bob had no idea that I married into a Longhorn and Linda Moore. She was selected by a 3 judge panel (judges pictured) legacy. A long line of champions. The drive them on a ranch in Manteca, California where Bob it takes be a champion and determination required to kept some racehorses (Culpepper, J). Manteca Ranch is become one exude from this family. Naturally, I had to his first membership with the Texas Longhorn Breedfind out more about this man named Bob Moore. ers Association of America (TLBAA) that I found and Bob was born in 1925 and passed from this earth noted 9 total TLBAA memberships for him. The most in 2008. I know from pieces of various conversations prolific being Manteca Ranch, Bob & Linda Moore, and and reading his obituary that he has two children by Bob Moore/Ginger Kinder (H.O.R.N.S). These first cattle his first wife, raised Brahman cattle, owned racehorses, were brought to Texas when Bob and Linda found their and didn’t miss a Tulsa State Fair for fifty years. A quick ranch land in Gainesville. Shortly after moving the catGoogle search proved that Bob Moore was quite suctle to Texas, Linda’s son-in-law, James Culpepper, was cessful outside the cow barns too. James no doubt, if you have driven near Arlington, you have worked as Bob & Linda’s ranch manager from approxiseen a building built by his company. A World War II mately 1988 until 1998. He hauled cattle to shows in all Navy veteran, Bob returned home to Bristow, Okladirections across the United States and homa after the war and chose not to take won. They did a lot of winning. “Bob had a over the family dairy but instead started good eye for good cattle,” says James and building. Wife, Ginger Kinder Moore, says also notes, “we fed a lot of feed to a lot of Bob often told her, “Thank God I crossed animals.” With a cow herd of one hundred the river and came to Texas” (Kinderto one hundred and twenty mommas and Moore). His first building in August 1946 two herd bulls at a time, it’s no wonder he was a metal quonset hut thus, starting fed a lot but that also gave him plenty aniBob Moore Construction. side the breed with promotional materials they hauled to bring in new members. He knew how to promote all sides of the breed. In this way he was able to help himself and others get ahead with their cattle (Culpepper, J). Teaching and talking about the breed and the impact livestock can make in a person’s life did not just happen at shows. James often took his children, Bob and Linda’s grandchildren, to the ranch and to shows with him on weekends. James’ eldest son, Ryan, remembers, “From my perspective [the ranch] always had a family feel to it and not a business atmosphere. I knew Bob and Linda approached the herd with a business mind, but, for me, they always made Bob with Saltgrass (originally:Nebuchadnezzar). Saltgrass and MK genetics are often seen in recent Champion pedigrees. sure it was about the experience, education, and spending time with my grandparents, were very active with and had a tremendous impact on parents, siblings, and extended family” (Culpepper, R). the youth breeders from the beginning and supported The feeling of support and care from Bob and them all over the country (Barker). Stephanie Bradley Linda was not just for the close family. Bob and Linda Fryer, a past TLBT President, remembers back on supMoore are credited with being instrumental in the creport she received from Bob and Linda. “They always ation and development of the Texas Longhorn Breeders had an open door for us to come see cattle and them… of Tomorrow (TLBT), some even say they founded it. Bob was on the Board of Directors and show [by] their bull. I knew I had them rooting for me in served as a Director, as Treasurer the stands. And, I always hoped they knew how much I (Dallas Morning News), and from 2003-2005 served appreciated them for letting me have that bull. … I took as Chairman of the Board (TLBAA Trails). Scotty O’Bryan a lot of pride any time Bob would let me show a calf writes, “I’ve studied the Trails Magazine all my life and at side.” (Bradley Fryer). I was told stories of Bob fightI spent my youth always looking at his ads, and when ing the good fight for kids to be able to show that didn’t Bob was COB his monthly writings were always read.” even know him, buying college textbooks for several (O’Bryan). Larry Barker told me that Bob and Linda young people, and even sending one young lady to nursing school. Bob was generous, he loved the youth and he loved Linda (Kinder Moore). Linda Moore, a kind, sweet woman (Barker) and a devoted Texas longhorn breeder/supporter, started the TLBAA Calendar and the Texas Longhorn Cookbook (Editor). Sadly, she passed away in 2001 leaving Bob in a sort of depression as he had been sure he would go first (Culpepper, J). About a year after Linda’s passing, Ginger says she got a call from the TLBAA telling her that a man needed help getting his cattle to a show and to go help him. That man was Bob Moore and help she did. Ginger, a successful cattle woman in her own right, and her 2 children traveled from Oklahoma

Breeders to Gainesville, Texas on the weekends to tend Bob’s cattle and haul them to shows. Ginger called Bob an organizer, a forward thinker, a smart businessman, a competitor, and notes he was always thinking. He didn’t want anyone to be better than he was, so he was always trying to improve. Together they formed Bob Moore/ Ginger Kinder or MK Ranch and it still stands today with Ginger on the original land Bob and Linda purchased in Gainesville. Ginger remembers Bob “loved his cows” and that he liked big framed, heavy milking, deep sid-

pearance after losing his leg was at a Legacy Sale. “He was a person that never looked back” (Kinder Moore). However, when I looked back and counted the championships won during World Shows from 1991-2019 in Open Haltered and Non-Haltered divisions, Bob Moore, under member names: “Bob & Linda Moore” and “Bob Moore/Ginger Kinder”, holds the most championship titles (Grand and Reserve Grand included) at 22 titles (TLBAA Trails). I am certain that the number of National Youth titles could be celebrated as well. The champion bulls and cows owned by Bob Moore can still be found in the pedigrees of calves in the hunt for championships today (TLBAA). Ginger Kinder Moore referencing her first time in her late husband’s home told me, “His walls were purple, and he had trophies everywhere.” Purple is the color of ambition and of champions, Bob had both. She also told me that he didn’t Dawn Ringstaff, Rick Ringstaff, Former President George W Bush, Carol Dilley, Carla Payne, Linda like to be beat. Nutrition

Importance of Forage Analysis: Making Sure Nutrient Requirements are Met Winter forages for cattle may need supplementation with protein or minerals. Jeremy Martin, PhD (ruminant nutritionist and reproduction manager, Great Plains Livestock Consulting) says it’s important to sample and test forages, especially this year after unusual weather patterns in many regions. “We always recommend testing, even on lower-quality cheaper ingredients of diet. Cost of tests, relative to potential savings, is so small there’s no way to justify not doing it,” he says. You can lose money if you over-supplement or undersupplement, so you need to know the nutrient values of your feeds. “Ideally, you’d Hay sampling drill test forages before purchase. Small grains hay should always be tested, because nitrates are potentially an issue with them,” says Martin. Warren Rusche, SDSU Extension Beef Feedlot Management Associate, says you can’t rely on “book values” in terms of nutrient content. You need to know what the nutrient values actually are. Janna Block, North Dakota State University Livestock Systems Specialist, says fall is a good time to get hay samples. This cattlemen a chance to evaluate their hay and determine which group of cattle to feed which hay. “For protein, cattle need a minimum of 7% in the diet. Below that level, microbial efficiency in the rumen declines,” she says. There’s not enough protein to “feed” the microbes that ferment and digest forage. Digestion slows and a cow can’t get adequate nutrients from what she’s eating, and also can’t eat enough to sustain herself and loses weight. Forage that’s only 7% protein (and 50% TDN) might work for the mid-gestation dry cow, but is inadequate for cows in late gestation. “Pregnant cows need forages that are at least 55 to 58% TDN and 8 to 9% protein, for fetal growth. This will also depend on condition of the cow. If you are trying to feed a thin cow to pick up in body condition she’ll need more nutrient-dense feed,” says Block. “Cows in late gestation/early lactation have the highest requirements—about 60% TDN and about 11% protein. This is a rule-of-thumb way to evaluate your forages and match them with various production 50 | August 2021

groups. First-calf heifers have high requirements for growth as well as supporting a fetus,” she says. It’s hard to create a ration for beef cattle without a forage analysis since nutrient values can vary so much, even within the same type of plants. Brome grass hay could be 6% protein or as high as 12% depending on stage of maturity and weather conditions while growing and during harvest. “When feeding grass hay we need to know the protein level,” says Rusche. “If it’s 9 to 9.5% protein, we won’t need additional supplement, but if it’s only 7% that’s a different story. The rule of thumb I was taught is that cattle need something that’s at least 8%. If it’s below 8% and we supplement with protein we see improved digestibility and increased intake.”

CHECK NITRATE LEVELS Nitrates in forages can sometimes be a problem for cattle, according to Kevin Sedivec, North Dakota State University. Depending on growing conditions, nitrate levels may be excessive in pastured forages or harvested crops, and those levels will remain high in stored feeds. “Nitrate toxicity can occur in two scenarios. One would be annual forage crops harvested for hay. Nitrate levels can be excessive if the grower uses too much nitrogen fertilizer. If you fertilize the crop thinking in terms of what would be adequate for “X” amount of production and it’s a dry summer—and the crop has less biomass than expected—there will be elevated nitrogen levels in those plants,” he explains. “I recommend testing soils for nitrogen levels and then add fertilizer as needed to achieve the production potential. If you end up with a shorter crop because of drought, you should test the crop for nitrates,” he says. The second scenario would be certain crops that are known to be prone to nitrate toxicity. “The main one would be oats, however all cereal grain crops can become high in nitrates under stressful conditions. If you put up oats for hay, we recommend testing the hay—unless you had a good summer with abundant moisture and plenty of biomass. It’s always a good idea, however,

Make sure cattle are eating enough, especially in cold weather. “If they don’t eat enough, and the forage is not very digestible, we’ve created an energy deficit in those pregnant cows, and set ourselves up for poorer calf health, poor colostrum quality, and poor rebreeding the next year—so we didn’t save money by not purchasing protein,” says Rusche. An investment in protein supplement when it’s needed will always pay off, but you don’t know if you need it unless you test your feeds. Block recommends sampling each lot of hay, based on number of bales in each lot, and a lot consists of all the hay (same species) harvested off the same field under the same

to test oat hay for nitrates,” says Sedivec. “Producers who plant brassicas like turnips, radishes, etc. for cover crops should be aware that in drought conditions these will also accumulate nitrogen. Most producers graze those crops because they are hard to put up for hay. In stress conditions such as drought, I recommend testing brassica species for toxicity levels before you graze them,” he says. “Toxic levels are usually associated with drought. Oats, barley, sorghum-sudan grass, millet, etc. should always be tested if you harvest them for hay. We generally see toxic levels following a stress period like drought or an early freeze,” he says. Hay might be toxic if it contains nitrate-accumulator weeds. “Weeds like kochia, Russian thistle, and lambs quarter can be very high in nitrates, and pigweed to some degree. I tell people that if they have weedy areas in the field they should either not hay those areas, or keep those bales separate from the others and test them. These weeds can also be deadly when grazed. Cattle usually eat these because they are palatable,” he says. Barnyards and corrals may grow a lot of weeds, and if you put cattle in these areas later they may consume the weeds. “It’s not uncommon to see problems when people move cattle into corrals where weeds have been growing all spring and summer. Lambs

conditions (within a 48-hour period). “Some people might just sample what they think is their worst hay, to know what the bottom level is, but we can’t put together a nutrition program without a total feed analyses, to be able to target when you’d want to feed certain forages or might need a supplement,” she says. “Any feed test is only as good as the sample we send off, so we want to make sure the sample actually represents the feeds we’ll be using,” Rusche explains. A sample should be taken from each field, and each cutting of hay, because these may be different in their stage of maturity. “If its grass hay, we may have started cutting at boot stage and

quarter often grows thick in corrals and may be high in nitrates,” he explains. When you send in forage samples for testing, the lab will send back the results, and tell you what the nitrate levels are—safe, moderately safe, or toxic. “If the hay is high in nitrates, the next question is what to do with it. Even after it’s been stored a long time, it is still toxic; nitrates don’t volatilize out like prussic acid does in the sorghum-sudan grasses,” says Sedivec. The nitrate levels will not drop over time. “The only way to safely feed this forage is to blend it with other feeds to dilute the nitrates. Many producers will put that hay into a total mix ration, and if they know what the levels are they can blend it with a grass mix to bring those levels down. That’s the only way you can handle a high nitrate level,” he says. “It’s easier to deal with a moderately high level feed, such as 2000 parts per million. You can blend those easier than the feeds that are really high. Two years ago I saw some turnips that were over 4000 ppm, and those levels are deadly,” he says. “If you know you’ll have to blend a high nitrate feed, test your other feeds so you can accurately figure out how to blend it off and adequately dilute the nitrates. It costs a little to test, but it will be a lot cheaper than dead cattle!”

Nutrition ended up with some fields that were already headed out, and those will be very different in quality. There may also be species differences, or soil differences in certain fields. One field may have had more manure on it, or caught more rain,” says Rusche. “Then we must make sure we’re sampling that particular lot of hay uniformly and not just pulling cores off bales we can get to the easiest. We need to take about 20 cores throughout that batch of hay to get a good representative sample,” he says. The labs do a good job of testing and reporting. “Things we generally look at most closely are moisture

content, percent dry matter, crude protein, TDN, fiber levels, and associated energy. These values will tell us whether the feed will be adequate to meet cows’ needs or if certain feeds could be blended together to meet those needs, or whether we need to bring in some outside supplement,” he explains. Often ranchers just do what they’ve always done. “They might give their cows 35 pounds of dry matter and 2 pounds of protein supplement, but they don’t know if they really need that supplement,” says

Taking a hay sample

Block. “With the unusual harvest conditions we’ve had this year, it’s even more important to do feed testing.” A field that normally produces high-quality forage may be different if harvest was delayed (and forage overly mature) or got rained on multiple times before baling. If a person is trying to figure out a least-cost feeding strategy and develop an adequate nutrition program, this is the place to start. “Some people call and say ‘it’s the same field we did last year; can we just use last year’s analysis report?’ I ask them if this year was exactly the same as last year. You don’t know how different, and we can’t put together a ration with numbers we’re just guessing at,” says Block.

ASK THE

VET

WITH JULIE PACK, DVM

Meet Our Members Doc, is there a best age to castrate my bull calves?

The answer to this question depends on what your goals are. The hormone testosterone inhibits long bone growth in mammals (the reason steers are taller than bulls or cows and, on average, have more horn) but it also promotes muscle growth. So, if you are wanting to grow really impressive trophy steers you should plan to castrate earlier rather than later (and make sure you have the genetics to grow really big horns!). Since cattle are born with descended testicles, unlike some other species, you can castrate as soon as one day old. If you are raising steers for beef (or you just prefer a little stouter steer) then you might consider waiting until weaning or slightly later to allow for more muscle development and bone circumference. Whatever age you choose to castrate, you should always ensure that both testicles are present. Cryptorchid animals should be given a little time to see if the retained testicle will descend on it’s own, otherwise they will need to be surgically castrated by a veterinarian. Castrated animals with one or both testicles retained will continue to exhibit bull features and behaviors, and in some cases can be partially fertile. Until next time, may your pastures be green and your calves be healthy!

Greg Kott Laid Back Ranch • Swanton, OH 1. How did you get started in the Texas Longhorn business? I saw a photograph of a world famous Texas longhorn bull and fell in love immediately. I knew I had to become a part of the industry and have cattle of my own. With the purchase of a beautiful 50-acre farm in Swanton, Ohio, I built Laid Back Ranch from the ground up. I chose to invest in Texas Longhorn due to the array of colors, horn size/shapes, healthy beef qualities, hardiness and calving ease. 2. What are a few highlights of your current Texas Longhorn program? I’ve acquired some great cows with incredible genetics. We want color to catch the attention of experienced breeders and longhorn novices alike, the horn to rival the best breeders in the industry and the size and beef qualities to make Angus ranchers respect the breed. We are fully dedicated to the Texas Longhorn breed and to breeding top notch genetics within the industry. 3. What are your future goals for your Texas Longhorn program? To keep improving the breed and cultivating new friendships with other breeders. “Meet Our Members” is a way for newer breeders (3 years or less) to introduce themselves to the Longhorn industry. If you would like to be featured, simply email myra@tlbaa.org with the answers to the above questions. . (max. space is approx. 300 - 350 words total, can be less)

In Memoriam

Susan Marie Barr Kropp December 12, 1946 - June 25, 2021 Susan Marie Barr Kropp, age 74, of Stillwater, Oklahoma passed away on June 25, 2021, at Legacy Village Memory Care in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at Strode Funeral Home Chapel with Matt Thomason, Executive Minister, First Church, Owasso, Oklahoma officiating. Interment followed at Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Strode Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Susan was born December 12, 1946, to David Leon Barr and Twylla Dean Stone Barr in Enid, Oklahoma. She grew up in Medford, Oklahoma, attended Medford Public Schools and graduated Medford High School in 1965, where she served as a cheerleader and Medford FFA Queen. In 1965, her father, along with her family, moved to Blackwell, Oklahoma, establishing Barr Funeral Home. Upon graduation from high school, Susan attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, majoring in the College of Home Economics. In 1966 at OSU, she met her future husband, Johnnie R. (Bob) Kropp from Lockney, Texas, that was also attending OSU as an Animal Husbandry major. That fateful first date in 1966 eventually resulted in their marriage on August 16, 1968 and a whirlwind of great events, places and memories over 52 years of marriage. Their undergraduate years at OSU and the many friendships that were made were very special to Susan. Susan and Bob’s only child, Paul David, was born in 1968 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. After her husband’s graduation from OSU in 1969, they lived in Plainview, Texas, where her husband was engaged in his family’s farming and ranching operation. In 1970, an opportunity for her husband to return to OSU to pursue an advanced degree arose, resulting in their return to Stillwater. Susan was able to complete her degree in home economics in 1972. She remained home raising their son until the late 1970’s when she embarked on her own career as a receptionist and administrative assistant for three prominent businessmen in Stillwater until her retirement in 2013. She had the pleasure of working for Dr. Tom Covington in his medical practice, Dr. G.A. Razook in his dental practice and her final 18 years with Rick Walsted of E Z Drill. She loved working for and with each of these great men and considered them more close friends than her bosses. Some of her greatest joys over her 35-year career were getting up early in the morning, getting very professionally dressed, going to work and meeting new people every day. She knew so many people in Stillwater and they knew her. These friendships were dear to her heart and she remained very close to many of them throughout the years. Her main hobby was shopping. Susan enjoyed shopping for clothes, shoes and jewelry. There was always a bargain somewhere; her hobby was finding that special accessory at just the right price. She prided herself in looking her best, never to go out in public unless she was dressed for the occasion. Her true love was her husband, Bob. She enjoyed being by his side as he pursued his career in the Department of Animal Science at OSU, judging livestock at major state, national and international expositions, his leadership and advisory activities with cattle breed associations and his ranch consulting services. Bob and Susan were heavily involved in the TLBAA and the Texas Longhorn industry from 1987 through 2015. Over the 28 year span, they traveled almost every weekend to a Texas Longhorn event, show, sale or ranch consulting activity, serving the association and breeders, making new friends and memories. She enjoyed living life to the fullest. Numerous people that crossed her path over the years have remained her very close friends. So many good times and memories were had by all. Though her remaining family is small, they each meant the world to her. Her brother, David Shawn Barr, has been by her side his entire life. Her son, Paul David, was her bed-rock. His wife, Missy, and their children, Carson and Kennedy, were her cherished blessings. Her favorite time in her later years was watching her grandchildren growing into amazing young people, Carson excelling in baseball and football at the state and collegiate level and Kennedy excelling in state and national cheerleading competitions. She cherished her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a younger brother, Brian. Survivors include her husband, Bob Kropp of Stillwater, Oklahoma; a son, Paul David and his wife, Missy Rose Kropp of Oologah, Oklahoma; and two grandchildren, Carson and Kennedy Kropp of Oologah, Oklahoma; and a brother, David Shawn Barr of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Condolences may be mailed to the family at Dr. Bob Kropp, 1315 Falls Drive, Stillwater, OK 74075 or emailed to the family at bob.kropp@okstate.edu.

Memorials are published free of charge based on information shared by the family or a close family friend. Additional information regarding involvement in the Longhorn breed may be provided along with the published obituary, or a customer memorial specifically for the Longhorn industry may be provided. It may be edited to fit available space. Please submit memorials, or any questions, to myra@tlbaa.org.

The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award

The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award is given to individuals who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of Texas Longhorn cattle through their breeding program. This award is named after native Texan, Dave Evans, who entered the Texas Longhorn industry in 1977, establishing the Yellow Pine Ranch at Cuchara, CO. He and his wife, Billicarole, quickly became enthusiastic about the breed and additional ranches were purchased to supplement the original ranch. Evans served on the Board of Directors of both the TLBAA and the Mountain & Plains Texas Longhorn Association. He also served terms as TLBAA Vice-President. He was a founding partner and host of the Colorado National Texas Longhorn Sale, a record-breaking event when it started in 1981, which continued to be one of the industry’s major events for many years. From the start, Evans realized the necessity of using the best bulls available in the breed in order to develop a top herd. His goal was to breed for consistent size as well as correctness and outstanding horns. He purchased Texas Ranger Jr. in 1980, and then Dixie Rebel and Major Investment. In 1986, Evans acquired CT Spoty Ruler, the bull he considered to be the best he’d ever owned. Before his untimely death, Evans had succeeded in breeding a herd of Texas Longhorns that were well recognized in the breed. It is therefore a significant honor to be a recipient of this award, named in honor of this dedicated Longhorn breeder.

Elmer Parker Lifetime Award

Lifetime Devotion to the Texas Longhorn Breed and Its Breeders

The Elmer Parker Lifetime Award honors those members, who have been dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Longhorn breed, qualities that Parker was known for. This award is named after Elmer Parker, who was a longtime employee and manager of the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge Longhorn herd. Parker joined the staff at the Refuge in 1946, learning from the previous Longhorn managers: Earl Drummond, Heck Schrader and Joe Bill Lee. In 1968, he took over the responsibilities of the Longhorns at the Refuge and continued until his retirement in 1981. Thus, the continuity of Longhorn expertise at the Refuge continued for more than half a century. The Parker Brown color designation on Longhorn registrations was named after Elmer Parker – the dark brown, almost black color, with lighter dorsal stripe, was one of his favorite colors.

This award is named after Mel Raley, who will always be remembered as a shining star for the TLBAA because of his ability to share his vast knowledge of the Longhorn breed with new members.
