Read up on the TLBAA Special Award criteria and send in your nominations. Director Election informa tion on pg. 62 contains new steps this year. Make sure you know what to expect. We want you to participate in everything you possibly can. It’s the participants that make all these things a success. Affiliates, where is your news? What a great opportunity to draw in new members in your area and to show potential new Longhorn owners that there is a a great source of informations, camaraderie and activities right in their neck of the woods. If you have events coming up and want our readers to know, make sure you email the dates and contact information to myra@tlbaa.org to be included on our free industry calendar in Trails and on www.tlbaa.org. They are not placed on there until I receive information from the hosts for the event. If you are a TLBAA Qualifying show, a show application must be submitted to pam@tlbaa.org before putting the event on the cal endar. If you ever have any questions on the calendar or want to submit an event, simply contact myra@tlbaa.org. I do pray that those without rain get it, those with flooding dry up some, and that everyone can move into a gentler Fall season. Until next month, Blessings, Myra Basham Myra Editor-in-ChiefBasham
The past 12 months has been a bit like driving in mud. I’m laying on the gas, there’s lots of action, but little forward motion. I don’t know if this is a side effect of having Covid last July or just the Twilight Zone atmosphere of the world right now. I’m ready to get of this hole and move ahead. The goal, no more late magazines. If order to accomplish this I may have to apologize to some folks that miss my cut off dates, but I think overall people understand the need for deadlines. I just hate for anyone to miss out on an opportunity to run in the month they want. But that will be the first traction to get this accomplished. The first level of gravel under the tires, so to speak. To help you keep up with all the overlapping deadlines hitting at the end of this year turn to page 74. The holidays fall right in the middle of it all and things get a little crazy. I hope knowing your due dates out front will help cut down on the confusion. I know our heads will be spinning in production much like the tires in the mud keeping trying to keep it all on time while keeping quality up. It is never too early to commit to an ad in an upcoming month. If you know that you will want to be in any specific future issue, just email me and I can reserve the space. I’ll reach out to you for materials prior to that issue. Better yet, send the materials in and we can get an early start on it as time

Superior Awards: Those animals winning both their Futurity and Measuring classes will take home a coveted award recognizing those who excel overall. Bull Alley: Come take a seat and hold on to your hat as we dim the lights, start the music and bring in each bull to stand in the spotlight as you hear more about his ge netics and production record and dream of adding some new genetics to your herd but….WAIT! All you have to do to take that genetics home with you is bring a semen tank or order semen for delivery at the event. This is window shopping at its best! An awesome opportunity to see industry leading bulls in person and purchase semen at special event pricing. If you can’t be in Wichita Falls, you can still purchase se men on-line and have it shipped.
Measuring Contest: The first and only event offering official horn measurement records for Texas Longhorn cattle. Tip-to-Tip, Total Horn, Composite and Twisty measurements will be taken based on the choice of the entrants. If you are unable to attend, be sure and check out the satellite locations for the weekend before, Octo ber 8 & 9, as there should be one close enough for you to enter and attend. Satellite entries vie for the same mea surement awards as those present in Wichita Falls.

Futurity: Cattle are judged individually in class divi sions by a set of five judges against breed standards. It is a look at the complete animal – conformation, color and horn. Scores are ranked in each class to determine a winner. Additionally, this is an opportunity to earn a bit of prize money! A Futurity win is a cattleman’s validation that their breeding program is producing what the industry de sires. Even spectators take away a lot of insight as to what needs adjusting in their herd to produce market able Longhorns. They are fun to enter and educational to watch – Come check it out!
2022 TLBAA Horn Showcase: Join Us in Wichita Falls or Participate Remotely
The TLBAA Horn Showcase makes its debut in Wichita Falls, TX, this year on October 12 – 15! All the measuring, Futurity, Bull Alley and sales take place in the JS Bridwell Ag Center. Just a short walk across the pedestrian bridge to the Multi-Purpose Event Center will take you to the seminars and awards banquet. The Wichita Falls CVB is thrilled to have us and we are excited to bring this event to their city!
Awards Banquet: Along with the Bred & Owned Heifer Sale, we have brought back the Awards Banquet this year. This will take place at the Multi-Purpose Events Center on the evening of Friday, October 14, following the heif er sale. This is the opportunity to hear the winners’ an nounced, get those award photos, eat a tasty meal and enjoy the camaraderie with fellow Longhorn enthusiasts.
Bred & Owned Heifer Sale: It’s back! On Friday, Oc tober 14, we will offer 32 of the finest heifers produced by the leading ranches across the country. The heifers must be bred and still owned by their original breeder to enter this sale. Take a long look at these girls – their production career is all ahead of them! Select Sale: The buying opportunities continue the morning of Saturday, October 15 with some outstanding Texas Longhorn cows being offered. There will be 74 ani mals available including several presented as lots of two or three heifers. For both sales, either bring your trailer or fire up the computer to bid online. There are offerings to fit any pro gram. Look for the catalog online in advance of the event and as part of your September Trails issue.

This month’s issue also has information on nominations for the Division B Elections. This is the third and final part of the Board reduction process. This year, Division B will have only Regions 6-12 to be nominated, and not the two Division B At Large Directors. There will be a nomination form sent out to every member, in every Region and Division, worldwide to nominate two at large directors, by majority vote, therefore bringing the total of Board Members to 15. If you have any questions, please call the office or your director. Don’t forget to get your memberships renewed, it’s that time of the year again.
AssociAtion news Chairman’s Message
TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS August 2022 | 21 Longhorn Family, Well, it is a hot, dry August that we are experiencing right now. I have been hearing from people across the country about dry pastures with little to no grass. Some breeders are already feeding hay and are looking for more. Also, I have seen several ranches cutting numbers due to the drought conditions and the high cost of feed and fertilizer. Many have held off fertilizer because of no rain and not wanting to burn up what grass they have. Hopefully most have gotten some hay put up. I know we’ve all been praying for rain and been trying to hold on to our cattle, and we will get through this time and be blessed with some moisture and cooler weather soon.
This month has the update from the 35th World Expo in it. Should be a good read on all the happenings from this year’s event. Lots of pictures and information. It was a wonderful event this year with a great turnout and a lot of great cattle, and even greater kids. So proud of our TLBT kiddos.
It’s that time of year again that we need to be thinking about Year End Awards. The forms are in this issue as well as the information on each award. Please read the qualifying information on the awards and really try and nominate members that meet the criteria that the awards represent. These are awards that are nominated and given by the members to those deserving.
The Horn Showcase is fast approaching and is coming together to be a grand event, with the futurity, Bull Alley and horn measuring, and two sales and a banquet this year. They are still accepting sponsors for the events, if you would like to participate and your support will be greatly appreciated in making the Horn Showcase happen. It is the largest and only official measuring event in the country and a great way to showcase your animals, promote your herd sires, sell semen and enjoy the fun time competing in the futurity and sales. It is at a new venue this year, in Wichita Falls, Texas at the J. S. Bridwell Ag Center at the Multi-Purpose Events Center on October 13-16, 2022. Should be a great weekend for all to enjoy, visit and catch up with old friends and meet some new ones.
I want to thank our TLBAA office staff. They have been working hard on keeping the wheels on and trying to provide good service for our members and trying to keep everyone happy. Myra and Emma are working on getting the magazine back on schedule and out on time. To my Longhorn Family, Thank You, Keith Du Bose, Chairman of the Board Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America

The barns were busy Wednesday with cattle arriving, people checking in and everyone settling in. The TLBT youth got their first taste of competition that afternoon with a livestock judging contest and everyone got to gether that evening for a chance to eat and wind down at the barn Thursday, party.the TLBT Youth kicked off with a group photo and show ring procedure meeting and then rolled into a full day of competition in the ring. Youth Judge Shane Bedwell and the show ring volunteers kept the day rolling smoothly. At the end of the day, Bedwell had nothing but praise for the animals he judged and the showmen bringing them in the ring. Friday dawned hot again with a full day of activi ties planned. The youth began their day with their Gold Merit competition, which included giving speeches and having their project books evaluated. In the ring, the Non-Haltered division was being presented to judge Jim Reeves who was a crowd pleaser with his stories on the history of the breed. After the Non-Haltered classes, there was a general membership meeting held to allow members to pose questions to committee chairs and board members about current programs and proposals. The TLBT also met for their annual meeting and elected new officers for the coming show year. Show Champions and Emma Moorman www.showchampions.com

22 | August 2022 TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS For this year’s Texas Longhorn World Expo, the en tries kept coming and coming, until we were getting close to the 1,000 level! Although the Texas heat decid ed to make an early appearance this year, everyone did their best to ensure both themselves and their animals stayed comfortable. The week included something for everyone and resulted in many smiling faces. The total entries were strong with over 985 which is a 7% increase from last year! Most individual divisions showed an increase: • 985 Total Entries - Increase of 7% • 652 Head of Cattle - Increase of over 8% • 414 Youth Entries - Increase of almost 4% • 224 Open Haltered Entries - Increase of over 11% • 67 Non-Haltered Entries – Increase of over 42%! • 98 Futurity Entries – Increase of 6 ½% • 33 Trophy Steer Entries – Increase of over 13% • 96 Miniature Entries • 53 Miniature Exhibition Entries – Increase of over 17%
What started out as a few extra classes added to a few shows and limited representation at the World Show for the Texas Longhorns registered as Miniatures has evolved into their own division and, beginning with the 2022/2023 show year, the chance for the TLBT members to earn points showing a Miniature at shows that include that option. At this year’s World Show, there were 50 females and 17 bulls entered in the haltered Miniature division.
The Senior Sale continued to build from last year’s excitement as seven Longhorn heifers sold, auctioneer Joshua Rush worked the crowd to raise a total of $67,690 to go towards the future endeavors of those youth participating. You can find more information on the Senior sale in this issue. A solemn moment followed the sale as those breeders
The TLBT Miniature steer class was split into three divisions with 23 entries. As a comparison, at the World Show held in 2018, there were 12 females and 3 bulls in the haltered Miniature division…and one steer. As the saying goes, “You’ve come a long way, baby!”
TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS August 2022 | 23
The Miniatures began participating in the Hall of Fame standings at the 2021 World Show and it continued this year. The Top Three were honored in their divisions with the hope entries will continue to grow to increase that number. Two owners dominated the Miniature yearend standings. The Lazy JP Ranch of Dr. Julie Pack had a total of six in the final Miniature Top Three standings with Lovejoy Longhorns contributing another five. They both continue to be the biggest supporters and promoters of the Miniature Texas Longhorns.
The World Show Committee made the adjustment to the schedule for this year and moved the Texas Gold Futurity o Thursday and to Friday afternoon. This change worked well with the Futurity animals brought in front of the grandstands so that more people could view them. Instead of being evaluated against each other in the show ring, these Longhorns were judged one at a time by class and scored against the judges’ ideal. Futurity judges James Culpepper, Weston Hetland, Matt McGuire, Chris Schaper and Bob Schnuriger were up to the task of appraising the animals in this event.
Miniatures Continue to Make a Big Splash at World Show
24 | August 2022 TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS who left us since last year’s World Expo were remem bered. The riderless horse and beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace made the memorial moment special. When the gates opened, it was time for a crowd fa vorite, especially for those visiting new to Longhorns - the Trophy Steer show. When those older steers all gather in the ring it is a sight to behold. Judges Amber Dunmire, Kristin Jaworski and Ashlee Miller had both the enviable and difficult task of deciding on the top Trophy Steers.
The last day of competition saw the adults take to the ring along with the youth for the Open Haltered Show. From young heifers to older bulls, judge PJ Budler had a lot quality animals to evaluate. Although a long day, a tired but happy crowd headed to the banquet. The banquet was a perfect wrap for the weekend, with good food, fellowship, a fun silent and live auction with lots of items to bid on and many awards presented. The banquet theme of “80’s Western” was on full display with many great outfits present to bring back those memo ries. The evening concluded with many of the TLBT and adults taking to the dance floor with our deejay rolling Although we all fought the extra hot temperatures and the extra high fuel prices, the prevailing thoughts at the end were, We can’t wait for 2023 and let’s crack that 1,000 number in entries!

The Source Syndicate has become a major participant in the Senior Sale and secured the winning first bid on all seven animals. In all, they provided $35,250 toward the Senior Sale. Other TLBAA members contributed big to make the sale such a success. We appreciate all winning bidders and those that provided “add on’s” during and after the sale:
Each year graduating TLBT Seniors can market and sale a registered Texas Longhorn to raise funds for their future. This year, a total of seven seniors participated and sold their heifers on Friday afternoon of the World Show for a total of $67,690!

I am excited to say that the new TLBT officer team will be gathering soon for our annual officer camp and leadership workshop. During this retreat, we will be working on our leadership skills as well as our ability to work together as a team. Additionally, we will be discussing and voting on fundraising activities, our annual service project, and several other items of business. Many members have already expressed to me some great ideas to be shared! I believe this time together will help us become a successful leadership team that will serve the TLBT to the best of our abilities.Wishing everyone the best for a happy end of summer and a great start to the new school Sincerely, year!

Class M4 Reserve Junior Champion Miniature Female (remaining first place winners and second place winner from Junior Champion Class)
Class M14 Born July - December of second preceding year
The Miniature Texas Longhorns have made great strides in the past few years with their numbers and creating new showing opportunities. The open Miniature Longhorn show division was created and approved before the 2020/2021 point year and many TLBAA a liates have included those classes with their shows in the past two years. The 2021 TLBAA World Expo was the first year end show to have that new Miniature division o cially as part of their event. With the Miniatures already on the grounds, in both 2021 and at this year’s event, exhibition classes were o ered for the TLBT members allowing them to show the animals as well. Also approved beginning with the 2020/2021 point year was a Class 38 in the TLBT division for Miniature Texas Longhorn steers. A Grand and Reserve drive were also included. The Class 38 has proven to be very popular with the youth and was available at all a liate shows. It was included at some of the State Fairs and Stock Shows. It was announced at this year’s World Expo, the TLBAA Board of Directors, working with the Miniature Committee, had approved new class breaks for optional TLBT Youth Miniature World Qualifying Show Classes beginning with the 2022/2023 point year. This will provide an opportunity for the youth to show in an additional five female and three bull classes, and the Miniature steer class was divided to include another two showing opportunities. There are also junior/senior and grand/reserve drives included with these new classThebreaks.Miniature Steer class will remain mandatory for a liate shows while dividing that existing class into three age groups. For the 2022/2023 point year, these classes will be: Class 38 (born in 2022); Class 39 (born in 2021); and Class 40 (born in 2020). This will follow with a true champion drive with a Class 41 (Grand Champion Miniature Steer) and Class 42 (Reserve Grand Champion Miniature Steers). Stock Shows and Fairs will be encouraged to include these classes with their classWithlistings.several a liates already o ering the Open and/ or Non-Haltered Miniature Longhorn classes, adding in the TLBT classes to show Minature females and bulls will provide the youth additional opportunities to show and earn points toward the yearend Hall of Fame standings. A liate shows that include both the Open Miniature and the TLBT Miniature classes will allow for the opportunity for these animals to be shown twice at a show in the same manner as the regular open Texas Longhorns.
Remember! The TLBT Miniature Steer Classes are mandatory for a liate shows; the TLBT Miniature Female and Bull Classes are optional for a liate shows to include them for the 2022/2023 show season. Be sure and contact your a liate show producer in advance to inquire if these classes will be included.
Class M16 Reserve Grand Champion Miniature Bull (remaining class winners plus second place winner from Grand Champion class) Programming and testing is currently underway in the HORNS system and should be completed before the first show of the new point year. For those handling the o ce duties at shows, all TLBT entries will be entered in the same manner as before in the “TLBT Entries” tab. The system will automatically put an animal with the “M” in its registration number in the correct Miniature classes. Although we do not expect any errors, please contact the TLBAA o ce if you do encounter any difficulties or have questions.

Texas Longhorns “WOW” at Summer Pen Show
Written by Glenda-Lee Vossler Thursday, Jul 07 2022, 4:04 AM - www.discovermoosejaw.com ON thE trail
"That was a bull that I bought last fall off of a good friend of mine from Manitoba. His name is Knight's Blade and he just is an awe some bull. I think he's going to produce some real nice calves for us." Hildebrand says he'll likely be taking him to Canadian Western Agri bition in the Fall. The Grand Champion Female was shown by Gus Joyes of Athabasca, Alberta. He says the female that won it for him is named Prairie Fire and is 7 years old. "I'd say she's fairly balanced overall, the judge commented he liked her udder. I was busy during the show but, from what I remember, she had a little more horn than all but one in the show. She's just an overall showy animal. I'll likely take her and a few more to Agribition this fall." The judge for the Texas Longhorn Pen Show was Alvin Pawlitza. He says it was a great show adding that while he has judged numerous livestock events, this was his first time judging the longhorns. "The Longhorn breed has a rich history in the beef industry. One of the components of it is an added market to those cattle for their horns, and for their hides. Their horn placement, and the spread of their horns and this sort of thing. Which, quite frankly, I wasn't familiar with until I looked into it a little bit." Deb Lesyk and Dwight Overlid of Outlook, showed the Reserve Grand Champion Bull and Female during Saskatchewan's Texas Longhorn Summer Pen Show. The Canadian Texas Longhorn Association held a Summer Pen Show in Saskatchewan over the weekend. The Long horn event was held during Frontier Days in Swift Current. Longhorns are considered to be a fairly easy going animal that does extremely well in the drier conditions. Pete Hildebrand from Hanley is President of the Canadian Texas Longhorn Association and says it was a great event and they'd like to return next year. He notes they had great participation with 20 mature animals along with some calves shown by exhibitors from across Saskatchewan and Alberta. Hildebrand along with his base cattle operation has about 10 Longhorns and ended up showing the Grand Champion Texas Longhorn Bull - a two year old with a horn span tip-to-tip of over 48 inches.

Elmer Parker
Jack Phillips Award
The Parker Brown color designation on Longhorn registrations was named after Elmer Parker – the dark brown, almost black color, with lighter dorsal stripe, was one of his favorite colors.
The Jack Phillips Award honors individuals who have worked selflessly for the Texas Longhorn and breeders alike, without recognition. This award is named after former TLBAA President Jack Phillips who was a quiet, yet forceful presence in the TLBAA. It is hoped that Affiliate Presidents will encourage their members to nominate individuals who have ful filled this criteria but all members of the TLBAA are encouraged to makes nominations. The Elmer Parker Lifetime Award honors those members, who have been dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Longhorn breed, qualities that Parker was known for. This award is named after Elmer Parker, who was a longtime employee and manager of the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge Longhorn herd. Parker joined the staff at the Refuge in 1946, learning from the previous Longhorn managers: Earl Drummond, Heck Schrader and Joe Bill Lee. In 1968, he took over the responsibilities of the Long horns at the Refuge and continued until his retirement in 1981. Thus, the continuity of Longhorn expertise at the Refuge continued for more than half a century.
The TLBAA special year end awards will be presented during the annual meeting held during Texas Longhorn Weekend in January 2022. All TLBAA active members are encouraged to nominate fellow breeders for these spe cial honors. Nominees will each be verified as active TLBAA members in good standing. Nominations must be in a written format and will include why/how the individual nominated fulfills the criteria of the award. An individual can only be nominated for one award each year. All nominees received and verified will be listed in the November TRAILS, and you the members, will be selecting the overall award winners. Deadline for nomination submissions is September 15, 2021, 5 pm CST. Nominations should be emailed to awards@tlbaa.org. If unable to email, you may fax or mail to the TLBAA office. Think about who you know that deserves to be recognized for a year end award.

Evans served on the Board of Directors of both the TLBAA and the Mountain & Plains Texas Longhorn Associa tion. He also served terms as TLBAA Vice-President. He was a founding partner and host of the Colorado National Texas Longhorn Sale, a record-breaking event when it started in 1981, which continued to be one of the industry’s major events for many years. From the start, Evans realized the necessity of using the best bulls available in the breed in order to develop a top herd. His goal was to breed for consistent size as well as correctness and outstanding horns. He purchased Texas Ranger Jr. in 1980, and then Dixie Rebel and Major Investment. In 1986, Evans acquired CT Spoty Ruler, the bull he considered to be the best he’d ever owned. Before his untimely death, Evans had succeeded in breeding a herd of Texas Longhorns that were well recog nized in the breed. It is therefore a significant honor to be a recipient of this award, named in honor of this dedi cated Longhorn breeder.

The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award is given to individuals who have dedicated themselves to the bet terment of Texas Longhorn cattle through their breeding program.
This award is named after native Texan, Dave Evans, who entered the Texas Longhorn industry in 1977, estab lishing the Yellow Pine Ranch at Cuchara, CO. He and his wife, Billicarole, quickly became enthusiastic about the breed and additional ranches were purchased to supplement the original ranch.

Poisoning in Cattle
As the frosts in the fall approach, livestock pro ducers are often aware of the risk of prussic acid poisoning—often called hydrocyanic or cyanide poisoning. Certain forage plants, especially sorghums and related species, and certain tree leaves (such as wild cherry or chokecherry) are associated with an in creased risk of death loss because of this type of poi soning after a frost. Understanding how poisoning occurs and what factors are involved in contributing to those conditions can help ranchers try to minimize the risk by not allowing cattle to graze or have access to these plants when the danger is high. Sorghum is a common forage in some parts of the country, but in the early 1900s stockmen discovered that under certain conditions, sorghum plants release hydrocyanic acid (HCN), which makes them poten tially risky for grazing. In the plant, HCN is attached to a larger molecule, a cyanogenic glucoside that itself is harmless; it is simply a compound consisting of a sugar and a non-sugar molecule. However, damage to the plant can set in motion a two-step enzymatic process that results in two prod ucts with the final one being HCN. Generally, for this process to occur the plant has to be damaged as the glucosides and degradative enzymes are in separate compartments within the plant cells. Damage may occur through the chewing action of an animal, a hard freeze where plant cell walls are rup tured, or mechanical action caused by a swather and its crimpers when cutting hay, or chopping hay. Once these damaged plants are ingested by a ruminant ani mal, the HCN is released in the rumen and readily ab sorbed into the bloodstream and the result is oxygen starvation of body cells. HCN does not prevent oxygen from being trans ported by the red blood cells, but does prevent the body cells from receiving the oxygen. The cyanide produced (the same quick-acting poison used by people in the spy movies to kill themselves if captured) blocks the utilization of oxygen. The animal dies from asphyxia tion at the cellular level. This is a rapidly acting, lethal toxin. Ruminants are more susceptible than single-stomached animals like horses, because the rumen microbes have enzymes that release the HCN acid in the digestive tract. Death often occurs within minutes of exposure. Poisoning sometimes occurs in pastures and range land areas where chokecherries grow. The wild cherry

By: Heather Smith Thomas or chokecherry is a large shrub or small tree with dark green leaves, clusters of white blos soms and dark red or black fruit. The leaves contain glycosides which can produce cya nide and hydrocyanic acid poisoning in cat tle. Wilted or frosted leaves are most poison ous. The cyanide is a fast-acting poison; the animal generally dies within 30 minutes to an hour after eating a fatal dose. About 2.5 pounds of leaves will kill a cow.
• Be very cautious when grazing short regrowth that occurs after grazing, harvesting, or a light frost.

• Do not graze sudangrass, sudangrass hybrids, or sorghum until the plants are at least 18 to 24 inches tall. This allows some dilution of the HCN.
• Prevent selective grazing of lush young regrowth by using rotation grazing.

Some plants, particularly sorghums and sudangrass, accumulate cyanogenic (prussic acid producing) glucosides in the outer tis sue layers of the plant. The enzymes that can trigger the prussic acid production are locat ed in other plant tissues, specifically the leaf. Young, growing plants contain more HCN per unit of weight than older plants. Any stress condition such as drought or freeze damage can increase the HCN amounts. There is more HCN in the leaves than stems, and the topmost (younger) leaves con tain more HCN than the lower leaves. The HCN tends to become diluted in older plants, but the top-most leaves may still contain dangerous amounts. New regrowth following drought, grazing, or any other form of environmental stress is often dangerously high in prussic acid. Plants grown in soils with high levels of nitrogen, but low levels of phosphorus and potassium are also a greater risk. Some plants are most dangerous after a frost when the plant cells have ruptured by being frozen. Cyanide is a gas and will gradually dissi pate as those frosted tissues dry. The usual recommen dation for grazing risky pastures is to wait at least seven days or more for those poisonous gases to completely leave the plant tissues. Keeping cattle off those pastures for at least a week will greatly reduce the risks. Prussic acid content also decreases after cut hay has dried or the silage has been completely fermented. Most cattle losses in grazed pastures occur when hungry animals consume young plants or regrowth.
Dryland sorghum tends to be higher in HCN poten tial than irrigated sorghum due to more stress on the plant. High rates of nitrogen fertilizer application will also increase HCN potential, as can an imbalance of ni trogen and phosphorus in the soil. Several enzymes are involved in production of ami no acids with many genes being involved, and some plants and hybrids have been selected for lower risks for poisoning. There are some commercial hybrids which are relatively low in prussic acid potential, and others are being developed, but they are not guaranteed to be safe because of the many uncontrollable factors in volved. You can never be absolutely certain that a field of sorghum is safe to graze. It is also difficult to give precise answers regarding the levels that might cause problems due to variation between certain areas of a field, and from one sample or plant to another, and also because of differences in amount (and speed) of forage intake when cattle are grazing. There are several ways to try to minimize risks and this means taking a proactive approach to managing the grazing—to try to prevent HCN poisoning. Recom mendations generally include the following guidelines:
• Do not graze susceptible forage crops following a
• Never turn out cattle that are hungry. Feed some hay to cattle before turning them out to pasture late in the afternoon.

series of light frosts. Wait 7 to 10 days (or longer) before grazing under those conditions.
• Make sure you have had a killing frost because sor ghum plants will initiate tillering with a light frost. The tillers will be exceptionally high in HCN. It is recommended that at least seven days (one week) be allowed after a killing frost before grazing.
• If environmental conditions in your area are such that HCN poisoning is a consistent problem, check with your seed dealer about varieties or hybrids that would have a lower HCN accumulation po tential.

• Take a soil sample from the area to be planted. Do not apply excessive nitrogen fertilizer.
• Defer grazing after a killing frost until the plants have dried, usually about 7 days.
• When turning cattle into a field with possible HCN problems, turn in only a few cattle at first and see how they do. There are no totally reliable quick test methods of determining the amount (ppm) of prussic acid that may have accumulated in sorghum plants. Livestock producers should be cautious about grazing plants that have been subjected to stress. Danger can be reduced by planting a variety or hybrid that is low in prussic acid potential and by using preventative management prac tices. The environmental scenarios that enhance prussic acid accumulation are similar to those of nitrate toxic ity, but prussic acid poisoning will often kill the animals quicker. It’s difficult to save an affected animal because death is often too quick; you generally don’t find them in time to treat them. Longhorns - Aduddell Ranch - B4 Cattle Company - Bolen Longhorns

Sometime later, I convinced the Central States Fair Board to let us have a Longhorn Show. Several breeders from Wyoming and Nebraska were instrumental in making that a reality for 2016 and 2017. Then I met Scot and Jodie O’Bryan. We agreed that if there were ever to be a Longhorn Association, we would just have to make it happen. We organized a meeting (again) and elected new o cers. August is a BIG month for the GPTLA! We have come a LONG WAY in the last few years. I thought it might be interesting to some of you to get a quick glimpse into the history of the GPTLA: In late 2006, I was hunting in Texas. Across the fence from the ranch we were hunting on stood several Texas Longhorn Steers. At that moment in time I was bitten with the Longhorn bug. In June of 2007 I bought my first Longhorn cows from Harlan and Lori Walker in Wall, South Dakota. Soon after, I bought a horn champion bull and a semi load of Longhorns from the Rombeck family in Kansas. The next challenge became what to do with them. I began talking to our local fair board about the possibility of including Longhorns in their fair lineup. That was a hard sell. As I engaged in conversation with more Longhorn breeders, we arranged for a meeting at my ranch. Several states were represented and everyone was enthusiastic about forming an organization. We elected o cers and everyone went their separate ways. In short, nothing happened so it just died on the vine.

The following A.I. Sire, HL Jango #987, was left out of the 2022 July A.I Sire Reference due to a mistake made when DNA was still being handled by TL BAA office staff. While he was certified in time, the necessary steps to get his certification en tered into the system were not followed and resulted in him not being pulled into the direc tory. We apologize greatly for the omission. The listing at right is as it should have appeared in the directory and the online edition of July Trails will be up dated with him in his proper space. The ad page referenced on his photo can be found in the July 2022 issue as well. Our new DNA procedures can be found on Page 70 in this issue. July A.I. STEP 1 Go to TLBAA.org website and on the opening/home page in the upper right corner click on the All TLBAA Forms button. DNA & Breeding page will open.
The Dam of Merit Program has been available for TLBAA members for many years as a tool to recognize those Texas Longhorn females that stand out in the area of production among Texas Longhorn breeders. Often overlooked as an e ective marketing tool, this list is an o cial record of the positive reproductive record of Longhorn females. How can it benefit in your program?
STEP 8 Once the testing has been completed DNA Services will send you a copy of the results and enter the results into the animals profile in the HORNS system dnaservices@tlbaa.org will assist you in all of your dna needs ... don’t hesitate to email them or contact rick@tlbaa.org
STEP 6 DNA Services will email you back a work order with all of your details, double check that the bar code listed on the work order on the test sample on each specific animal is correct
ASSOCIATION NEWS
First, among fellow breeders, it shows your dedication to building a herd on a foundation of solid, reproducible genetics. No one can a ord females that do not produce o spring regularly and this record shows o those dependable genetics in your herd.
This is an a ordable and easy benefit for members to promote a very important positive trait of Texas Longhorns that make owning them that much more satisfying.

Third, among those who have never owned livestock or own other types of livestock, the thought of generating a little regular income from that beautiful, unique piece of history is always a plus. If you’re a hobbyist or simply an animal lover, you still want to know that when you’re ready to see calves on the ground, it will be high odds that the process will go smoothly.
STEP 3 container)Choose type of DNA test you want from the DNA Testing Price List, once you choose the test you want, leave the Price List page and go back to the home page to choose the type of test you STEP 4 wantChoose the type of test you need, on the test form you choose, fill out the form to include the bar code of the sample container you are using (hair, blood or tissue) for each specific STEP 5 animalEmail form to dnaservices@tlbaa.org DO NOT SEND TO TLBAA
Have You Heard of the TLBAA Dam of Merit Program?
Once the progeny have been verified, your dam will be added to the list which appears periodically in Trails Magazine, and you will receive a Dam of Merit certificate for your records.
**NOTE: This is not a record TLBAA tracks for you. It is up to you, as a owner/breeder, to notify us when your cow has achieved this goal. We look forward to your participation.
What’s the cost to you to get your female on the list? Only $25 plus a little time investment. You will need to make sure that as your females calve, you have updated their progeny records in H.O.R.N.S. If you have a female that qualifies, simply call the TLBAA o ce and speak to registrar Rick Fritsche, or drop him an email at rick@tlbaa.org and he will provide you with the necessary form to fill out to submit your dam for verification. Rick will also help with any questions you may have about “calf at side” information in H.O.R.N.S.
Second, among other cattle breeders, it promotes the cost e ectiveness of the Texas Longhorn breed. Dependably producing a calf every year is a trait every breed hopes for in a female. Such evidence of productivity can sway other cattle owners to consider bringing Longhorns into a crossbred program or starting a secondary herd of Longhorns. You may even turn them into 100% Longhorn owners!
Step By Step Instructions For Requesting DNA Services
STEP 7 Mail your work order with the DNA sample containers to Neogen GeneSeek Operations, 4131 North 48th Street, Lincoln, NE 68504 (do not send payment, TLBAA will invoice you for the payment once Neogen sends the invoice to TLBAA) DO NOT SEND SAMPLES TO TLBAA
STEP 2 Click on “Instructions for Ordering New DNA Sample Supplies” (Hair envelope, blood card or tissue vial-each sample container will have a bar code on it) Order your DNA Samples by following the instructions on that page (you will not be able to fill out completely the test request form until you receive your supplies with the bar code on each
The Benefits of the Beef Producer List
2. It lends credibility to your program. Having an affiliation with a larger group gives people more confidence in your business. It also assures them that your product is genuine.
3. It will drive traffic to your website. If you have invested in a website, then you want as many people to visit there as you can attract. Even if you have no online presence, you can still gen erate calls from interested parties.
The TLBAA Beef Producer list on www.tlbaa.org serves many purposes that are advantageous to our members who sell Longhorn beef.
1. It is a way for those seeking the product to find you. Sounds simplistic, but I have had restaurant owners tell me that when they learned about Longhorn beef they found their supplier on the Beef Producer list because a search for Long horn beef brought them to the TLBAA website.
7. When people contact the TLBAA office to find a provider of Longhorn beef we direct them to the list on the website.
72 | August 2022 TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS Beef
6. All advertising done outside of our industry will refer people to the list.
Joining the list is easy and in addition to exposure, the $75 Beef Producer fee also provides you with 150 free beef producer brochures to help with your market ing efforts. If you need more than 150 brochures during the membership period (one year from date of joining), you can purchase them at a discount rate of 12 cents each.Another perk of membership is the right to use the Registered Texas Longhorn Beef Producer logo and Registered Texas Longhorn Certified Beef logo (above) on your label. Upon request we can supply you with a letter to your processor that verifies current TLBAA membership and membership in the Registered Texas Longhorn Beef Producer program. Many require docu mentation before allowing use of the logos If you don’t feel like you are ready to join the TLBAA Beef Producer Program and be listed on the website, as an active TLBAA member you may still purchase beef brochures for 25 cents each plus shipping.
4. It allows other breeders who may want to buy or sell Longhorns for beef production to finder those participating in the beef market.
Visit www.tlbaa.org for forms to join or call the office at 817-625-6241 to request brochures.
5. Campaigns are running on Facebook to drive traffic to the Beef Producer page. Anyone inter ested enough to click the link is highly likely to view the Producer list to see who sells Longhorn beef near them.
8. When people investigate Longhorn beef, the more producers they see on the list the more they believe in it as a product and as a market.
