EDITOR’S NOTES

TAKE A MOMENT....OR TWO

Part of what newcomers say set this industry apart from others is the personal connections, the willingness to help out each other, and the camaraderie at events. Hospitality shown on ranch visits and hours spent talking about the one common thread in it all - the Longhorns - all add up to an industry that was built on people who love this great breed of cattle.

In this issue, starting on pg. 57, every member of the TLBAA has the opportunity to recognize breeders who have spent years improving and promoting the breed, gone out of their way to help new and existing breeders and deserve to have those efforts acknowledged.

The TLBAA Special Awards are peer nominated and peer voted upon. While only one person can win the award, all who are nominated reap the reward of knowing that others recognize their efforts. In this world of always being busy, it is worth the time and effort to nominate individuals for each award, and to take the time to fill out the reasons why, based on published criteria in this issue, the nominee deserves the award.

The same holds true for the TLBAA Hall of Fame nominations. They are peer nominated, but the final decision to induct is via a selection committee. The Hall of Fame is to recognize those who have truly impacted the breed and the association.

You can find criteria for all the awards and past winners inside. The lower participation numbers in recent years is likely a reflection of our current world’s overwhelming busyness. It is important to realize that the decreased participation in such peer-centered honors can make it seem as if the social aspect of this association is falling prey to the “every man for himself” mentality of the world. You have until September 16th to get nominations in. Please take the time to not only nominate those who deserve the recognition, but to fill out the information completely and be descriptive when telling of their merit. We look forward to getting more nominations than ever this year!

Another area a few minutes does a world of good is by submitting a “News on the Trail” item. Have you hosted a ranch tour? Did your student give a presentation about Longhorns? Did the local media do a story on your Longhorn operation? Did your artwork, photography or writing get published or recognized? Send us a brief write-up and photo(s) for consideration for publication. This section can serve as an encouragement to other breeders, no matter the size of their herd, to get out and be ambassadors while benefitting from the public exposure. No moment of public exposure for the Longhorn breed is too insignificant to recognize. Send items to myra@tlbaa.org.

I hope we see you this fall at the TLBAA Horn Showcase! You can find full information inside starting on pg. 13. It is a great place to see incredible cattle and meet some super nice folks. Come on out!

Blessings!

2024 TLBAA Horn Showcase: Join Us in Oklahoma City or Participate Remotely

The TLBAA Horn Showcase returns to the Canadian County Expo Center located just west of Oklahoma City this year on October 3 – 5! All the measuring, Futurity, Bull Alley, sales, seminars and banquet take place in the Expo Center. We are also excited to offer a concert with Kevin Fowler immediately following Bull Alley, the evening of Friday, October 4. This is an event not to be missed!

Measuring Contest: Horn Showcase is the first and only event offering official horn measurement records for Texas Longhorn cattle. Tip-to-Tip, Total Horn, Composite and Twisty measurements will be taken based on the choice of the entrants. If you are unable to attend, be sure and check out the satellite locations for the weekend before, September 28 & 29, as there should be one close enough for you to enter and attend. Satellite entries vie for the same measurement awards as being in Oklahoma.

Select Sale: This year we are continuing with a Select Sale with limited consignments to showcase the best our breeders have to offer. These buying opportunities will be available on Friday, October 4 with some of the finest Texas Longhorn cows you can find offered.

For the sale, either bring your trailer or fire up the computer to bid on-line via Hired Hand Live. There are offerings to fit any program. Look for the catalogs on-line in advance of the event and as part of your September Trails issue.

Bull Alley: Come take a seat and hold on to your hat as we dim the lights, start the music and bring in each bull to stand in the spotlight as you hear more about his genetics and production record and dream of adding some new genetics to your herd but….WAIT! All you have to do to take that genetics home with you is bring a semen tank or order semen for delivery at the event. This is window shopping at its best!

An awesome opportunity to see industry leading bulls in person and purchase semen at special event pricing. If you can’t be live at the event, you can still purchase semen online and have it shipped. Look for a sneak peak at those bulls in the September issue foldout.

After Bull Alley, the fun continues with acclaimed Texas country music artist Kevin Fowler! The concert is brought to you by New Age Cattle Company/Randy Murry and Lucky Mountain Ranch/Mike Davis.

Futurity: Cattle are judged individually in class divisions by a set of five judges against breed standards. It is a look at the complete animal – conformation, color and horn. Scores are ranked in each class to determine a winner. Additionally, this is an opportunity to earn a bit of prize money!

A Futurity win is a cattleman’s validation that their breeding program is producing what the industry desires. Even spectators take away a lot of insight as to what needs adjusting in their herd to produce marketable Longhorns. They are fun to enter and educational to watch – Come check it out!

Superior Awards: Those animals winning both their Futurity and Measuring classes will take home a coveted award recognizing those who excel overall.

Awards Luncheon: For this year, we will have all show awards presented on Saturday afternoon, after the Futurity concludes that day. This is the opportunity to hear the winners’ announced, get those award photos, eat a tasty meal and enjoy the camaraderie with fellow Longhorn enthusi-

asts. Those that want to hit the road early on Saturday, should have plenty of time after receiving their awards.

Awards Luncheon

Sunday, October 6

All Cattle Must Be Removed By 12:00 p.m.

• A Horn Showcase female entry must have had at least one recorded TLBAA calf, be nursing a calf at side or be confirmed bred by 36 months of age by palpation, ultrasound or BioPRYN blood test conducted 60-days past breeding and be so noted on a health certificate signed by a veterinarian and furnished to the show office.

SATELLITE AWARD WINNER

An award will be given to the host of the satellite who has the most animals measured at their location that are NOT owned by the satellite host. Animals that are owned in partnership by the host do not count.

It will be decided by number of measurement entries, not by number of animals.

As an example, an animal entered and measured for composite will count three times.

GET OF SIRE AND PRODUCE OF DAM

• Get of Sire and Produce of Dam will each offer a Junior Division and a Senior Division.

• Each Division is based on the age of the offspring of the animal entered. The Junior Division consists of offspring between the ages of two and five years of age. The Senior Division consists of offspring six years and older.

• Sires must have three offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.

• Dams must have two offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.

• Both living and deceased bulls and cows can be entered since entries are based on measurements of offspring.

• Scoring for each animal will be computed by adding the values of TTT, TH and Composite of all three offspring for a bull or both offspring for a cow. The bull or cow with the highest value of the total added measurements amongst offspring will be the winner.

• Animals do not need to be present to compete in this class – can be measured at a satellite or in .

• Only breeding animals (Bulls or Cows) can compete as offspring.

• Offspring may be produced by natural breeding, artificial insemination or embryo transfer.

The TLBAA HSC Futurity is set up by age divisions to allow breeders the opportunity to exhibit the total package animals that represent their breeding operation.

• There is a 75% cash payout based on the class size. Payout will go to the top third of the class.

• Animals must be entered in at least one horn measurement contest.

• Animals will enter the ring based on age. Youngest to oldest. When the animal being exhibited walks into the ring, the 5 judge panel will be given the animals DOB.

• With the 5 judge panel, the high score and the low score will be thrown out and the remaining three judges will be added together for the final score. In the event of a tie there will be a tie breaker judge selected in advance. That judge’s score will be the tie breaker in the event of a tie.

• Animals must measure in at least one measurement class to participate in Futurity as well as be eligible for a Superior Award.

ULTIMATE COW & BULL AWARD

• One bull and one female will be chosen based on popular vote.

• Animals must be present in Oklahoma City to be eligible.

• Ballots will be available at the TLBAA desk during the event for voting.

HORN SHOWCASE SUPERIOR AWARD

This innovative award showcases our most elite animals that possess the total package we all strive for. To achieve the Superior Award, animals are required to compete in the horn measurement contest, as well as be judged on conformation in the Horn Showcase Futurity.

To be win the Superior Award, an animal must place first in both a measurement class and their Futurity class.

Winners will have a trophy mailed to them after the event.

BULL ALLEY

• Bulls must be TLBAA A.I. certified and have an A.I. certified number to sell semen and participate in most straws sold.

• Bulls that are living must be present in Oklahoma City; deceased bulls may be entered for semen sales only. (Deceased bulls may have their offspring on site to represent them)

• Each owner should bring a semen tank with semen for sale or have semen sent to Champion Genetics. Must have 50 straws minimum available. If less than 50 straws available, seller must pay shipping to buyer.

• No minimum straw purchases allowed.

• Bulls must be entered in a measurement class.

• All semen sales are subject to a 7% commission.

June 12-16, 2024 • Belton, TX

For this year’s Texas Longhorn World Expo, the 37th year, Fiesta was the show theme! The weather was a bit more cooperative than in year’s past with rain helping cool things down on move-in day. The week included something for everyone and resulted in many smiling faces.

This year was a first with the Youth division being renamed and rebranded as the Texas Longhorn Junior Nationals. After surveying the TLBT membership, the name change was made and a new logo put in place. This will now have the Texas Longhorns aligned with what other breeds call their annual end of season youth shows.

The barns were busy Wednesday with cattle arriving, people checking in and everyone settling in. The TLBT youth got their first taste of competition that afternoon with a livestock judging contest.

Thursday, the Texas Longhorn Junior Nationals show kicked off with a group photo and show ring procedure meeting and then rolled into a full day of competition in the ring. TLJN Judge Ryan Rathmann and the show ring volunteers kept the day rolling smoothly. At the end of the day, Rathmann was complimentary on the animals he judged and the outstanding showmen bringing them in the ring. Also, approved this year by the youth was announcing the showmanship

The total entries for the 2024 TLBAA World Expo were strong with over 763, which while a little lower than last year, was still a very solid showing by TLBAA membership:

• 763 Total Entries

• 499 Head of Cattle

• 379 Youth Entries

• 201 Open Haltered Entries

• 38 Non-Haltered Entries

• 41 Trophy Steer Entries

• 104 Miniature Entries

winners in the ring. This gave Rathmann the opportunity to sing the praises of the top showmen in the four divisions. Friday dawned with a full day of activities planned. The day began with donuts, juice and coffee available for everyone as part of the “Breakfast In the Barn” sponsored by the Oklahoma Texas Longhorn Association. After getting fueled up, the youth then went into their Gold Merit competition, which included giving speeches and having their project books evaluated. In the ring, the Non-Haltered division was being presented to Judge Brayden Hawkins and moved quickly. It was followed by the exciting Trophy Steer division with judges David Ed-

wards, Ron Garison and Lana Hightower having their hands full in sorting the large junior steer classes before naming their overall Grand Champion Trophy Steer.

The Senior Sale was an exciting event for both participants and spectators alike. Auctioneer Joshua Rush worked the crowd to raise over $108,000 to go towards the future endeavors of the dozen youth participating. You can find more information on the Senior sale in this issue.

The TLBT concluded the day with their meeting and voted on the new members for the TLBT Advisory Committee as well as electing their own new officers for the coming show year.

The last day of competition saw the adults take to the ring along with the youth for the Open Haltered Show with both Standards and Miniatures being shown. From young heifers to older bulls, Judge Parker Henley had a lot quality animals to evaluate. Although a long day, a tired but happy crowd headed to the banquet.

The banquet was a perfect wrap for the weekend, with good food, fellowship, a fun silent and live auction with lots of items to bid on and many awards presented. The banquet theme of Fiesta added to the festive atmosphere to the evening. The TLBAA World Expo concluded with many of the TLBT and adults taking to the dance floor with our deejay rolling out the dance numbers.

We can’t wait for 2025 and what it might bring to the Longhorn World Show!

STEP 1

Unlike most other forms of showing livestock, showing Registered Texas Longhorns does not require a youth to own the animal that it shows. In order to prepare your child to walk into the show ring, first that child must be a junior member of the TLBAA.

Parents are not required to be members unless they choose to become Longhorn owners and be a part of the whole Longhorn experience.

STEP 2

Find a TLBAA Affiliate in your area. You can find a list of affiliates and their contacts on www.tlbaa. org. You may also look at the schedule of events page in the back of Trails Magazine or the calendar tab on the website to find a show near you to visit and meet Longhorn members.

STEP 3

Many breeders have animals that they would love to allow a youth to show. It may be possible for you to arrange to work with a breeder who shows and see if arrangements can be made for your child to learn from them and get their first show experience working with someone already familiar with the experience.

If you already own your own Longhorns, there are camps and workshops you can attend, or maybe some private one-on-one with a Longhorn show person, to show you the ropes of halter breaking and working with your animal.

If you are fortunate enough to purchase a halter-broken animal, maybe even one that has already shown, then talk to someone to understand the process of entering and attending a show to be prepared to make your debut.

STEP 4

Take advantage of information in Trails Magazine, www.tlbaa.org, affiliate activities and showmanship camps to broaden your knowledge and gain experience. Try to enter as many shows as you can, even if you don’t think you are doing well. Nothing can be done well without learning and practice.

STEP 5

During all the steps above and beyond, have fun! Enjoy making new friends and watching your child build character, learn life lessons and develop skills that will help them throughout the rest of their life! Aim for the trophies but focus on the rewards of the journey.

2024 TLBT SENIOR SALE

The 2024 TLBT Senior Sale continued with its exceptional payouts to the TLBAA youth! A total of twelve youth brought their heifers before auctioneer Joshua Rush. The total for the twelve lots with add-ons was in excess of $108,000! Thank you to all the buyers and those that participated with add-ons. The Senior Sale is a creative, unique way for graduating TLBT seniors to fundraise for their future endeavors. No commission or consignment fees, 100% raised goes directly to the kids!

The high selling lot this was from Eve Sabio, whose animal brought $23,462.50 when the final bid with add-on’s came in. This topped last year’s sale topper which was believed to be the highest selling Senior lot in recent memory. For the second year, those contributors that wished to, were able to pay directly to the Texas Longhorn Breeders Foundation, making their donations come with a tax benefit!

We look forward to the 2025 Senior Sale and thankful for all who helped make it possible. Walker Hance’s Outlaw Cattle Company was the sponsor of this year’s Senior Sale. Pictured on this page are the youth and their animals with their buyers, if those photos were taken, or shots from the auction. Be sure to thank them, if you see them. Hey y’all!

Message Presidents

I had a blast at the Texas Longhorn Junior Nationals/TLBAA World Show this year! This organization has expanded to be an amazing community of people and I could not be more proud to be a part of it! The friendship, energy and passion expressed amongst our youth is truly something special. From congratulating our fellow exhibitors on a job well done or lending a helping hand, our industry will always be there for each and every individual. We have great things ahead and I cannot wait to see what this year holds. I would like to thank the TLBT Youth members for electing me as your 2024-2025 President! I am ecstatic to lead this membership with everything I have to offer. Being on this board for numerous years has helped me become a leader and a better version of myself. This past year, I served as your Reporter. Reaching out to new people, gaining knowledge about our amazing breed, and sharing countless stories and experiences with the industry has been a great privilege for me. Now, I can’t wait to be an even bigger part of what makes this community great!

To the new youth board, I am honored to share with all of you an opportunity to grow and better our organization. I know that this year will bring us closet together, as well as encourage us to try new things that will make us even stronger! Once again, thank you for believing in my leadership.

Here is to making this our best year yet!

Sincerely your new TLBT President

Sheridan Van Blarcom

Nix

Nix Family Longhorns | Murdo, South Dakota

Tell me about your family

- We live on a ranch near the small town of Murdo, South Dakota. Along with raising longhorns and working at our ranch, my wife Katie is a school teacher and her and I run our own fencing business. Our kids Molly (14), Mason (13), and Maddie (10), are very busy with sports and school along with showing and helping us at the ranch.

How long have you been breeding Texas Longhorn cattle?

- We had a registered Angus herd, and we got our first longhorns in 2015. Our older kids started showing soon after that and our youngest got into it a few years after.

What was the most memorable award that your family has received while showing longhorns?

- Our bull “Dried Pecos” placed 9th Hall of Fame. It was cool seeing him place so well along with other competitive bulls.

What/Who has been your biggest influence while showing Longhorns?

- Scot and Jody O’Bryan. We bought our first longhorns from them and they have helped us tremendously by teaching us how to enter shows, register calves, and help our kids with their showmanship skills.

Does your family have a favorite longhorn in your herd?

- Our favorite longhorn in our herd is our bull “Dried Pecos”. He has won several awards in his show career and has done very well for our family. We have also trained him to ride and he has been in parades and rode for the national anthem before. This is his first year breeding cows and we plan for him to get collected.

What is your favorite part about showing longhorns?

- My favorite part of showing longhorns is getting to learn leadership and real-life skills by being a part of our youth director’s board. I also like learning more about cattle and how to work with the young calves.

Who/what has been your biggest influence while showing?

- My biggest influence has been my family. They have always supported me and we have learned and grown to love this business together.

Do you have a favorite longhorn in your herd or one that you have shown and why? (Past or Present)

- My favorite longhorn is my steer, Maverick. He was my first longhorn in my herd and I plan on making him my next showmanship calf.

What is your favorite show?

-My favorite show is Fort Worth because we get to compete on a big stage and allows people that aren’t familiar with our breed to see and learn more about them,

Do you have any future aspirations or plans?

- I plan to go to college and study animal science and use that knowledge to become a cattle rancher and breeder.

Member Spotlight

What is your favorite part about showing longhorns?

- My favorite part about showing longhorns is getting to see friends and hanging out with my animals.

Who/what has been your biggest influence while showing?

- My biggest influence showing is my mom and dad. They taught me everything I know about longhorns and showing them.

Do you have a favorite longhorn in your herd or one that you have shown and why? (Past or Present)

- My favorite longhorn in our herd is my steer DC Clifford. He is my favorite because he was my first ever longhorn that I owned myself and he was a bottle calf. He is a big sweetheart and loves his neck scratches.

What is your favorite show?

-My favorite show is the World Show because that’s where I bought Clifford and I get to see my show friends.

Do you have any future aspirations or plans?

- My future plans are to get better at showing longhorns and win more shows.

How was your World Show experience?

- My World Show experience was really exciting and awesome. I have never shown in that big of arena and it was kind of scary at first, but after my first time in the ring, I was okay after that. I was able to learn more about the breed and make new friends too! I also won the livestock judging competition and made it in the hall of fame for the Junior division! I am excited to come back next year.

Organizing a Successful TLBAA World Qualifying

HOSTING

a Texas Longhorn show is a complex yet rewarding endeavor, requiring meticulous planning, coordination, and a deep appreciation for the breed and the community involved. A well-executed show not only showcases the unique characteristics of the Texas Longhorn but also fosters community engagement, education, and celebration of this iconic cattle breed. Here are the essential steps and considerations to ensure a successful event.

1. Planning and Coordination

• Early Planning: Initiating the planning process well in advance is crucial. Establish a timeline that includes key milestones such as securing the venue, arranging for judges, and promoting the event.

• Form a Committee: Assemble a dedicated team or committee to handle different aspects of the show. Assign roles such as logistics coordinator, marketing, sponsorship, and volunteer coordinator.

• Budgeting: Develop a detailed budget covering all anticipated expenses, including venue rental, awards, marketing materials, insurance, and miscellaneous costs. Seek sponsorships and partnerships to offset expenses and enhance the event’s offerings.

2. Venue Selection

Bovine Respiratory Disease in Cow-Calf Herds

Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) has been one of the greatest challenges of the cattle industry for many years, but only acquired this name in recent years. Cattlemen in earlier years simply called it shipping fever. Veterinarians a few decades ago knew it was a complex issue that consisted of three parts that combined to create lung disease: a virus called Parainfluenza-3, a bacterium called Pasteurella, and stress. In recent years, it became apparent that more factors were involved. The list of pathogens now known to contribute to BRD includes several additional bacteria like Mannheimia, Hemoph ilus, and Mycoplasma, plus the viruses IBR, BVD, BRSV, and probably several oth ers that may not have been identified yet.

BRD is one of the most costly diseases for the live stock industry, especially in feedlot cattle, but can also be a concern in cow-calf herds. Researchers are still looking for better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat it.

Dr. Chris Chase, Depart ment of Veterinary and Bio medical Sciences, South Dakota State University, says that when it comes to pre venting pneumonia in young calves the first thing is make sure you are doing a good job immunizing the cow so she can provide good colostrum to her calf. “We want to make sure her colostrum has adequate an tibodies for IBR, BVD and BRSV. These are still some of

the biggest risks for calves, so we want to be sure they get colostrum that contains antibodies that are specific for those diseases,” he says.

“One of the things we are learning is that when we try to booster heifers and cows with MLV vaccines to increase colostrum antibodies, the success isn’t all that great. Vaccinating at preg-check time or closer to calving with inactivated vaccines that have a little more antigen in them may actually be better in terms of improving the colostrum,” says Chase.

Once the calves are born, it is crucial to make sure they are suckling and getting colostrum in a timely fashion. “Most cow-calf producers don’t use intranasal vaccines on baby calves, though it’s common practice in dairies. Unless a stockman has a major problem with pneumonia in very young calves I don’t think it’s necessary. It’s usually fine to wait and give the calves their first vaccinations at branding age,” he says.

If a ranch is having a pneumonia problem in calves, it is important to get a veterinarian involved, to get an accurate diagnosis, to find out if it is caused by viruses like BRSV, bacteria like Mannheimia, or some other pathogen, to know what would be the best approach to combat BRD in that herd. “You have to know what you are dealing with. There are many recommendations about vaccination but if you don’t know what it is, you don’t know what to vaccinate against,” says Chase.

You don’t want to just be shooting in the dark and vaccinating. “The less you have to vaccinate, the better, to let that calf’s immune system develop, before you start vaccinating. We’ve learned that most calves simply need a blackleg (clostridial 7-way or 8-way) vaccination at branding time, and maybe an intranasal viral vaccine if there’s history of a problem with summer pneumonia. If we know there’s a problem with Mannheimia we can vaccinate for that, at branding. But if that’s not a problem there is no sense in giving calves that vaccine at that age,” he says.

Administering Intranasal Vaccine

“We are trying to minimize the amount of stress on these calves. The important thing is to have the cows well vaccinated.” This is crucial for two reasons. The cow can then produce antibodies for the calf in her colostrum, and she has good immunity herself and won’t be susceptible to transmission from her calf if you vaccinate the calves

BRD can affect calves of any age. Most of the bacterial pathogens that cause pneumonia are already present in the calf’s upper respiratory tract. They become a

problem in the lungs when the calf’s immune defenses are compromised, such as by viral infections or stress. Stressors may be bad weather, extreme changes in temperature, a long truck haul, overcrowding in a dirty environment, or nutritional stress due to deficiencies of an important mineral like copper or selenium. One of the most frustrating respiratory infections in preweaned calves has been called “summer pneumonia” and the cause is not always easy to determine—especially since cases tend to appear during good conditions when we don’t think of these calves as being stressed.

Dr. Andi Lear, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tennessee, says minimizing stress is very important, along with a good vaccination program. “We do a lot of cow-calf work here, and we tell clients they need some routine herd management, even if it’s just a couple times a year,” she says. Being able to look at every animal and evaluate body condition when checking pregnancy status of the cows before going into winter, and before the breeding season is helpful. Evaluating the calf crop also helps producers know if their health and nutrition program is working.

Using appropriate vaccine protocols to prevent respiratory diseases, blackleg etc. in calves is very important, along with trying to minimize stress when working them, and. “Take care of castration, pouring for parasites, etc. prior to weaning, and try to minimize

stress while weaning. We always tell producers not to wean on diesel fuel, meaning they should never perform these stressful procedures and haul the calves away in a truck all on the same day.” she says.

If you do all of this early, while they are still on the cow, it’s not nearly as stressful because mom is there to comfort them after they come out of the chute. “Cold turkey weaning on top of vaccinating can be very stressful and can result in a lot more sickness,” she explains.

TREATMENT – Sometimes a calf develops BRD in spite of best efforts at prevention. “If we are dealing with bacterial pneumonia we will be using antibiotics,” says Chase. “Many stockmen today use something like Draxxin or one of the other broad-spectrum antibiotics. It is important, however, to identify the pathogen so you have an idea what that particular bacterium would be sensitive to, and you can pick the right antibiotic,” he says. These antibiotics are only available by prescription from your veterinarian, so you should be working with your veterinarian on diagnosis. For viral pneumonia the best strategy is just supportive treatment—keeping the calf warm and dry, and hydrated.

“The important thing when calves get sick is to be able to recognize it early,” says Lear. “This is sometimes challenging, because cattle tend to look alert when they see someone, and may not show you as many

signs of being sick,” she says. If you can observe them before they see you, there’s more chance you’ll be able to notice if one is dull and droopy or hanging back from the herd.

“If you do see any with droopy ears, lethargy, snotty nose, rapid respiration, etc. immediate treatment is important. The choice of antibiotic is something you should discuss with your veterinarian, however.” You’ll need an accurate diagnosis (to know if pneumonia is viral or bacterial, and what type of bacteria might be involved). Antibiotics will not treat a viral infection, but the calf will need good supportive treatment and possibly an antibiotic to head off secondary bacterial infection.

will probably need antibiotics and possibly anti-inflammatory medication—which may help the calf feel better enough to eat and drink. Banamine is often given to calves with BRD because it reduces inflammation in the lungs, lowers the temperature, and helps the calf feel better.

“If people can plan ahead and do vaccination at appropriate times, along with low-stress handling, and appropriate weaning protocols, it will save money and time in the long run.”

“The best way to deal with viral pneumonia is to try to prevent it with low-stress handling and vaccination, and good supportive care if a calf does get sick. Antibiotics can help take care of any secondary bacterial infection that often follows the viral infection,” she says. The viral pneumonia weakens the calf’s immune system, and the animal is more vulnerable to opportunistic secondary bacterial infection.

Keep the calf warm and dry, eating and drinking, and discuss treatment with your veterinarian. The calf

It is important to have a proper diagnosis, especially if you are seeing increased incidence of pneumonia, rather than just doing a blanket treatment. “Often there are some low-cost management changes that can help prevent spread of BRD in a herd, rather than just treating them all with antibiotics. It pays to be proactive when you see the first case, and chat with your veterinarian early,” says Lear.

“Management and timing can save you a lot of money and save some calves, instead of trying to catch up and fight off BRD after it sets in. If people can plan ahead and do vaccination at appropriate times, along with low-stress handling, and appropriate weaning protocols, it will save money and time in the long run,” she explains.

Elmer Parker Lifetime Award

Lifetime Devotion to the Texas Longhorn Breed and Its Breeders

The Elmer Parker Lifetime Award honors those members, who have been dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Longhorn breed, qualities that Parker was known for.

This award is named after Elmer Parker, who was a longtime employee and manager of the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge Longhorn herd. Parker joined the sta at the Refuge in 1946, learning from the previous Longhorn managers: Earl Drummond, Heck Schrader and Joe Bill Lee. In 1968, he took over the responsibilities of the Longhorns at the Refuge and continued until his retirement in 1981. Thus, the continuity of Longhorn expertise at the Refuge continued for more than half a century.

The Parker Brown color designation on Longhorn registrations was named after Elmer Parker – the dark brown, almost black color, with lighter dorsal stripe, was one of his favorite colors.

The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award

The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award is given to individuals who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of Texas Longhorn cattle through their breeding program.

This award is named after native Texan, Dave Evans, who entered the Texas Longhorn industry in 1977, establishing the Yellow Pine Ranch at Cuchara, CO. He and his wife, Billicarole, quickly became enthusiastic about the breed and additional ranches were purchased to supplement the original ranch.

Evans served on the Board of Directors of both the TLBAA and the Mountain & Plains Texas Longhorn Association. He also served terms as TLBAA Vice-President. He was a founding partner and host of the Colorado National Texas Longhorn Sale, a record-breaking event when it started in 1981, which continued to be one of the industry’s major events for many years.

From the start, Evans realized the necessity of using the best bulls available in the breed in order to develop a top herd. His goal was to breed for consistent size as well as correctness and outstanding horns. He purchased Texas Ranger Jr. in 1980, and then Dixie Rebel and Major Investment. In 1986, Evans acquired CT Spoty Ruler, the bull he considered to be the best he’d ever owned.

Before his untimely death, Evans had succeeded in breeding a herd of Texas Longhorns that were well recognized in the breed. It is therefore a significant honor to be a recipient of this award, named in honor of this dedicated Longhorn breeder.

Texas Longhorn Hall Of Fame

Nominations Being Accepted for Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame

The purpose of the Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame is to preserve the great history of the Texas Longhorn cattle breed and to recognize individuals who have had the greatest impact and influence on the breed. Induction into the Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual, whose contributions and commitment have truly shaped the breed.

NOMINATION CRITERIA

To be eligible for induction the nominee must have been an outstanding contributor over a period of 20+ years either as a breeder, competitor, or contributor to the Texas Longhorn breed and TLBAA.

The nominee should have been or is currently a member of the TLBAA. A nominee may be either living or deceased.

Any TLBAA member in good standing may submit a nomination.

NOMINATION PROCESS

It is the responsibility of the person preparing the nomination to include a complete historical biography which is sufficiently detailed to tell the nominees story, to demonstrate conclusively that the nominee is deserving of induction into the Hall of Fame.

The complete unedited nomination package will become a historical TLBAA document. Effort should be made to detail the nominee’s history, accomplishments, and successes. Tell their story and preserve the history of how this individual contributed to our association and breed. Provide adequate supporting documentation.

Nominations must include a completed copy of the TLBAA nomination form as well as supporting documentation to demonstrate the eligibility criteria detailed below:

a. Accomplishments in the Longhorn industry

b. National importance within the Longhorn industry

c. Contributions made to the Longhorn industry

d. Enduring value or historical significance of accomplishments

e. Personal qualities (integrity, character, uniqueness)

Supporting documentation may include photographs, newspaper or other publication clippings, multimedia items, URL addresses for online videos, competition records from the TLBAA’s HORNS system or other related organizations. Reference letters from those who know or knew the nominee, a personal testament from the individual preparing the nomination, or relevant passages from books containing biographical information on the nominee.

Nominations will be accepted year-round; however, a nomination must be received by a deadline of September 15 of each year for the committee to consider for the following years award.

Nomination forms and supporting materials must be submitted in hard copy, unbound and on traditional letter size paper (8.5”x 11”). Nominations which are received after the deadline will not be accepted. Nominations which fail to adequately demonstrate the eligibility of the nominee will not be accepted.

An individual’s nomination may be reviewed by the Hall of Fame Committee each year for a maximum of three years; however, the nomination must be resubmitted each year. Upon the completion of the third year, if a nominee has not been selected for induction, then the nominator must wait two complete calendar years before resubmitting their nominee to the Hall of Fame Committee.

The Hall of Fame Committee, by a majority vote will select the inductees and be confirmed by a majority vote of the TLBAA Board.

INDUCTION CEREMONY

An induction ceremony will take place annually at the Hall of Fame banquet hosted by the TLBAA. Inductees will receive recognition and awards at the banquet. Inductee will also be showcased in the TLBAA Trails magazine.

MIDWEST TEXAS

LONGHORN ASSOCIATION

TODD MCKNIGHT PRESIDENT TMCK7@CKT.NET

The Midwest Texas Longhorn Association is the newest Affiliate within the TLBAA. MWTLA is for Kansas breeders and breeders who reside in bordering states to Kansas.

Kansas now has over 100 breeders and partnerships and when you pull breeders from bordering states, we have a very strong representation in the lower Midwest.

Our Horn Show Case Satellite measuring event will be at Lazy J Longhorns this fall in Greenleaf, KS on September 28th. We are planning on holding an Affiliate meeting after the measuring.

We are also working on a 2025 Spring futurity and sale in Kansas, many have asked for this type of event to allow everyone to gather and enjoy a weekend with friends and great cattle. May 9, 2025 is being considered, if you have input, we would love to hear from you.

The Midwest Affiliate has also been asked to host a Futurity with the Mid-American Stock Show in Hutchinson Kansas which is typically held the last of October and into November. We have meet with this group and they really want to include the Texas Longhorn Futurity with their great show. We will need your help in putting on this event. More details to come.

If you have any questions or ideas, you can reach out to: Todd McKnight, 620-704-3493, tmck7@ckt.net or Jim Rombeck, 785-562-6665, jl.rombeck60@gmail.com • www.MWTLA.org • MWTLA23@gmail.com

WYOMING LONGHORN BREEDER ASSOCIATION

KRIS JOHNSON PRESIDENT KRISTOPHERJOHNSON1995@GMAIL.COM

This summer has seemed to fly by, it’s hard to believe it’s already August! We hope to see you at Wyoming Sate Fair on Friday August 16th. We have an exciting show planned and look forward to seeing old friends and hopefully making some new ones.

This year the 2024 World Show had the most participants from Wyoming that it has ever had! Wyoming was represented well in all aspects of the show. We had participants in the halter show, non-halter show, youth show, and trophy steer show! There were four ranches represented in Belton this year. Dewey Longhorns, Belle Longhorns, Mohr Longhorns, and I M Bar Longhorns. The cattle and participants from Wyoming did very well and were competitive in their classes. Brinley Dewey of Dewey Longhorns won first place in the Junior division for livestock judging along with placing towards the top of her class with her steer, Clifford. Emma Velazquez of Belle Longhorns finished her great year of showing placing fourth in Livestock Judging and showing well enough through the show to be asked to help others while in the make ready area. Mick Velazquez of Bell Longhorns ended the year with an eighth place finish in the 2024 TLBT Hall of Fame. Overall Wyoming had a great show season, and we look forward to starting it all again for 2025 and continuing to grow with the recent success.

Happy trails!

Welcome Newest Addition to Roll of Honor

We’re excited to welcome the newest TLBAA Dam of Distinction to the Roll of Honor. Sanddollar Smoke’n Dawn is owned by Blake and Jessica Hickman of McKinney, TX.

The Dam of Merit Program has been available for TLBAA members for many years as a tool to recognize those Texas Longhorn females that stand out in the area of production among Texas Longhorn breeders. Often overlooked as an effective marketing tool, this list is an official record of the positive reproductive record of Longhorn females.

How can it benefit in your program? It shows your dedication to building a herd on a foundation of solid, reproducible genetics. No one can afford females that do not produce offspring regularly and this record shows off those dependable genetics in your herd.

The list also promotes the cost effectiveness of the Texas Longhorn breed. Dependably producing a calf every year is a trait every breed hopes for in a female. Such evidence of productivity can sway other cattle owners to consider bringing Longhorns into a crossbred program or starting a secondary herd of Longhorns. You may even turn them into 100% Longhorn owners!

Dam of Merit Roll of Honor

What’s the cost to you to get your female on the list? Only $25 plus a little time investment. You will need to make sure that as your females calve, you have updated their progeny records in H.O.R.N.S.

If you have a female that qualifies, simply call the TLBAA office and speak to registrar Rick Fritsche, or drop him an email at rick@tlbaa.org and he will provide you with the necessary form to fill out to submit your dam for verification. Rick will also help with any questions you may have about “calf at side” information in H.O.R.N.S.

Once the progeny have been verified, your dam will be added to the list which appears in Trails Magazine, posts under “Awards” on www.tlbaa.org, and you will receive a Dam of Merit certificate for your records.

This is an affordable and easy benefit for members to promote a very important positive trait of Texas Longhorns that make owning them that much more satisfying.

**NOTE: This is not a record TLBAA tracks for you. It is up to you, as a owner/breeder, to notify us when your cow has achieved this goal. We look forward to your participation.
