Longhorns Weekend Is All-Round Success Story Courtesy of Vanessa Brown, Namoi Valley Independent; Photos courtesy of Blackjack Camera Club Lovers of Texas Longhorn cattle gathered at the Gunnedah Showground on Saturday to exhibit their prime animals for Canadian judges and long-term breeders Deb Lesyk and Dwight Overlid. Sixty members of the Texas Longhorns Australia (TLA) association attended the show, with 17 animals exhibited and judged under the categories of purebred or full-blood heifer (up to 12 months), mixed grade heifer (up to 12 months), purebred or fullblood heifer (12-24 months), mixed grade heifer (12-24 months), mixed grade steer (up to 24 months), purebred or full-blood bull (up to 12 months), and purebred or full-blood bull (12-24 months). A number of children exhibited cattle, including Fletcher Wilby who was the youngest to show, taking home the mixed grade steer (up to 24 months) ribbon with his father Col Wilby for Skinny Lizard Smartie. Adelaide Cooper and her father Rodney from Scone exhibited Show Girl who won a ribbon for full-blood heifer up to 12 months. Corey Miles won a ribbon for purebred or full-blood bull (1224 months) and grand champion of the show with bull CCC Brad P. On Sunday, the Sixth Annual Longhorns Sale was held at the Gunnedah Saleyards to great success, according to TLA secretary Geoff Dawson. “The quality of the full-blood and the papered cattle was probably the best the sale has ever seen,” he said. “The commercial stock had been affected by the Maitland flood.” Mr. Dawson said the average for the sale across the board was $1643 for a total clearance of 37 lots.

“Not one thing was passed,” he said. “We’ve never ever had that before.” Mr. Dawson and his wife Belinda enjoyed personal success at the sale, selling a cow and calf for $8200 and a bull for $7250. He said he had never heard figures like that in Australia before. “I almost fell off the catwalk,” he said. “I thought, ‘What?!’” The TLA association has about 80 members and was started by John Bastardi, Don Constable and Geoff Dawson in 1998 as an informal group, then incorporated in 2010. Mr Dawson said he had just under 30 longhorns and bought his first animal from Mr. Constable in 1998. The animal was a fullblood bull and it took him another eight years to find a full-blood female. “I like [Longhorns] because of the colours and the horns,” he said. “I’m a bit of an old western fella.” Longhorns are a lean cattle, calve easily and are quite diseaseresistant, according to Mr. Dawson. “They’re more hardy than a lot of cattle because of the way they’ve been bred,” he said. The TLA show and sale was an all-round positive experience and success, according to Mr. Dawson. “It was a great weekend,” he said. “I told Belinda it would be hard to come down from the weekend.”

Longhorn expo Wrap-up Results TLBAA World Show & National TLBT Youth Show Four hundred entries made up the 2015 Longhorn Expo featuring the TLBAA World Show and the National TLBT Youth Show. Participants qualify from all over the United States during the show circuit year vying for an invitation to the Longhorn Expo. This year, exhibitors traveled from the following states – MO, OK, MS, LA, AR, KS and TX. The show was held at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, TX. “We are not interested in having more cattle than anyone else has, but we are interested in having some of the best cattle. And we will continue to buy accordingly.” That is the philosophy of Larry and Toni Stegemoller, relatively new to the Texas Longhorn breed, but quick learners as well as dedicated students of bloodlines and the attributes that are prized in today’s Texas Longhorn. Their journey started in 2013 with their first purchase of Texas Longhorn cattle. Or maybe the journey started when they bought some land for a weekend ranch and needed an Ag exemption. The Stegemoller’s TL Longhorn Ranch is at Brazos Point, about twenty minutes from Cleburne, Texas, where Larry headquarters his business and where, until recently, Toni, a Registered Nurse, had worked at the hospital 16 years. Their land is just inside the Bosque County Line, a couple of miles off the Brazos River in the northeastern corner of Bosque County. The Stegemollers recently moved to the ranch. They sold their home in Cleburne and moved into the weekend cabin that was part of original improvements they made on the property. The land is about 100 acres of wooded areas, pasture and the highest point is essentially a rock hill. The hill is the site of the new home being built. “The land when we bought it was cedar, mesquite and cactus,” said Larry. Clearing and improving the land has been a continuous process. Larry spends time almost every day on his skid steer or tractor. Toni chimed in, “We built fences, we built stock tanks and we built the little cabin we are staying in now. It’s very small, so we are a little cramped right now. We are excited that the weather is now permitting the construction to start on the new house.” Other early improvements included barns, loafing pens, and a Longhorn

Larry and Toni at th TLBAA’s 50th Anniversary celebration. chute. “We bought this land and we didn’t have any livestock,” said Toni. “We lived in town and knew we had to have an Ag exemption, so we thought of several options. We even thought about a wildlife exemption. I don’t remember what made us make the final decision. We did some shopping around on Craig’s List, because we didn’t know anything about any of the Longhorn associations, we didn’t know anybody that owned Longhorns and never had – we just saw this ad – it was Ross Ohlendorf, and there was a link there to his ranch. We shopped around on his website and picked out three cows that we thought were gorgeous. At the time we didn’t have a barn, we didn’t have a trailer – we didn’t have anything. So Curtis Ohlendorf delivered those three cows that we picked out just from the pictures on the website. That’s how we got started.” “I still work as a nurse,” said Toni, “and Larry runs our business here. Larry

and I have only been married 10 years. We met about 25 years ago in Cleburne when I used to buy my children’s athletic shoes at Larry’s shoe store. But we didn’t start dating until about 12 years ago. We had both become single and I was his mother’s nurse when she was in ICU at the hospital in Cleburne.” “Because we had little time for cattle, we needed something that would be fairly low maintenance, that didn’t require a lot of care, that we didn’t have to be there 24 hours a day to watch out for everything – so those were factors in the decision to buy Longhorns.” “It didn’t exactly work out that way,” said Larry, “but it sounded good at the time.” “I worked at the hospital in Cleburne for 16 years,” said Toni, “but recently went with Texas Health Resources Fort Worth, the big hospital downtown…it used to be Harris Methodist. It will be part time – instead of five days, I will be working three days a week.” “That’s more time for cows!” said Larry. “We had some issues this year,” explained Toni. “Not major, but some things with calves that required attention. We had some little incidents where I think my nursing experience was a benefit and I am glad I will be able to be there a little bit more than I have been.” For the past 25 years, Larry has owned and operated Footgear, a cluster of athletic shoe stores. The main office for the firm is in Cleburne, but Larry is on the road a lot, between the stores in Cleburne, Stephenville and two stores in Fort Worth. The shoe business has changed a lot during Larry’s involvement. “I’ll sell athletic shoes, some at well over $200,” he recalled, “that I could buy retail to wear at five dollars when I was playing sports. That’s a pretty big change.” “I have had no experience with cattle whatsoever,” said Toni. “One time when I was in junior high we had a milk cow, Texas Longhorn Trails

and that’s it. I did take care of a friend of ours’ horse one time. We frequently lived in the country but we never had livestock. I had no experience at all until we got these cows. I lived all over the country, from southeast Texas down near Beaumont up to central Oregon and lived for a short time in Washington, DC when I was a flight attendant, before I had children. I moved all over my whole

They are all frequent visitors to the ranch and grandkids like to live with

And they don’t mind – even when they are not helping us they show up in the afternoons and on the weekends just to get out of town and let the kids run around. They swim in the stock tanks and the water troughs; they love to go out and walk around and look for arrowheads. It’s a family situation.” “They love it out there,” said Larry. “They love it as much as we do. Recognized as the biggest-horned Butler cow in the breed, Sage Hen sold in calf to Cowboy Tuff Chex, the first registered Longhorn bull to achieve horn length of 90 inches. “We’ve got several really good animals,” said Larry, “and the one we bought from Bob is special – she’s just really special! When I first saw her in the sale catalog – I always put a star by what I’m interested in – and she got my first star. There were several we were interested in, but I had no idea we would get her.” “She’s a special cow and we plan to do embryo transplants. She is bred to Cowboy Tuff Chex now, so she is going

to have what should be an outstanding calf in a few months, then after that, we are going to do the IVF. We don’t care if the calf is a heifer or a bull – we already have a Cowboy Tuff Chex bull calf that looks just like his daddy and he shows great potential at 15 months – so I don’t know if I want a bull or a heifer – I’ll take either one.” “We actually have a mature bull,” explained Toni, “that we are partners with Red McCombs, Lee and Linda Blackwell and Donnie and Marilyn Taylor on. And then we have a couple of young bulls – the Cowboy Tuff Chex bull and a Sweet Brindle Dust bull — both young – that we don’t want to give up. We want to keep them for a while and see how they are going to turn out. We are overloaded on bulls right now.” “The Brindle Dust bull,” said Toni, “that we are partners with the Blackwells on, projects to almost ninety inches. I don’t know if he will get there, but we’ve got high hopes for him.” “He looks awesome right now,” said Larry. The Stegemoller program at this point centers more on the quality of the individual animal rather than a particular bloodline, although, as Larry pointed out, “Right now the Tuff Chex line is pretty tough to beat. And we really like what they’re doing with Brindle Dust also.” “What we hope is,” said Toni, “we have the mature bull that we are partners with – he’s from the Hunts Command Respect line. We are having calves this year and next from him – we’ve got some nice heifers he has produced. We are going to take what we get from him and hopefully these other two that are coming up, we’ll be able to switch them back and forth, and hopefully as we mix the Sweet Brindle Dust and Cowboy Tuff Chex and Hunt’s Command Respect, we will produce some very nice animals in a few years.” “Right now” she continued, “if you counted every animal on our place we have twenty, and that includes the bulls and the calves, so we don’t have enough land to specialize in a single bloodline, so we will just go with the blend (instead of going straight Butler through the Sage Hen cow).” “We also bought a special cow at the Legacy sale,” said Larry. “Her name is ECR Phenomenal Bug. We went to that

sale mostly as a social event, but we had seen this cow the year before selling at the Eddie Wood sale and we were shocked that she was in the Legacy sale.” “She was the high-seller at the 2014 Cowtown Classic Eddie Wood Sale,” affirmed Toni. “That was in January of 2014. We went through and looked at all those animals, and we picked her out as our favorite. She was an El Coyote – ECR Phenomenal Bug – and we talked to Felix Serna about her and told him that we

the quality of our herd.” “These sales have been a great learning experience or us,” said Larry. “That’s been where our decision to grade up and improve our herd came from – watching what was happening at these sales.” Thinking bigger with more land and more cattle, the Stegemollers plan to stay focused on raising Texas Longhorns. “We started out,” said Larry, “not knowing anything about Longhorns, but

ECR Phenomenal Bug really liked her. Then we got in the sale prepared to bid on her but she jumped up really fast and got out of our reach before we really knew what happened. It was kind of a shock to us and we were really disappointed. Then when we got the Legacy catalog we were shocked to see her in there. But we did not go to that sale with any intention of bidding on any cows.” “We went as a social thing because our friends, Rick and Tracey Friedrich, were there promoting their bull, RR Sweet Brindle Dust – they brought him to the sale – so we went just as a support for them. At the Legacy sale, you are sitting mostly in the dark and the cows were spotlighted in the sale pen. We were at a table with the Loomises, the Friedrichs, the Andersons and Tom and Linda Harman. It was a table for ten and we were back towards the back of the room. I was sitting in front of Larry as we were turned to watch the sale. When Phenomenal Bug came out into the ring and the sale started, I did not know Larry was bidding.” “We ended up bringing her home with us, and that has been one of the highlights this year. Getting “Bug” and Sage Hen has made a big difference in

We are a lot pickier now than when we started out. We are really on about our third set of animals now. We don’t know it all, but we have learned a lot.” “We still have two of the Ohlendorf cattle. A funny thing is, the three that we bought originally – we went to a couple of shows and a couple of the Longhorn events and saw what we got didn’t compare. What we ended up doing, the Ohlendorfs let us upgrade, so we took a couple of them back and got higher quality cows from them. We also have some neighbors that were interested in Longhorns and we eventually sold three of our original cows to our neighbors.” “We are doing some buying and selling and trading,” said Larry, “and that is the fun part. The people we’ve met and become friends with — so many of them – are wonderful, wonderful people. I have not met anyone who is not extra nice and extra special. We are really happy with that and that is probably what will keep us in the business as much as anything.” Texas Longhorn Trails

Knowledge of Grazing Behavior of Cattle Can Aid Pasture Management By Heather Smith Thomas

THE IMPORTANCE OF PLANNING “I advise producers to start thinking about next year’s grazing plan in the fall,” says Lardner. “The season just passed is still fresh in your mind, including things you might want to do differently another year. “If you have good records for many years on your pastures and ranch, you know what tends to work and how you might have to tweak your management in various situations. You won’t be in the middle of July and trying to come up with an emergency plan for a drought situation.” If you can look back over many years of grazing records, this cumulative knowledge can help your flexibility.

s ruminants, cattle can eat a lot of forage in a short time. Then they chew the cud and process the feed more thoroughly. They tend to graze in the early mornings and again in the late afternoon—into the evening— resting during the middle of the day. In really hot weather cattle graze at night. They have preferences in forage plants, and certain behavioral patterns when grazing. Understanding and taking grazing behavior into account can help stockmen optimize production when managing cattle on pastures. Plant selection when grazing is partly instinctive and partly learned. Social factors also affect where and when cattle graze; they travel in groups and defer to the lead or dominant animal to make decisions about where and when they graze. Dr. Bart Lardner (Research Scientist, Western Beef Development Center, University of Saskatchewan) says ranchers need to be aware of grazing behavior and use this knowledge to help control animal distribution on pastures. “If you let them do all the selection on their own, you may run into problems with some areas over-grazed and others undergrazed,” Lardner explains. If cattle have season-long use in a mountain area, for instance, they may go too high, too soon, and overuse immature higher grasses, leaving the lower elevation grasses to become overly mature. It would be advantageous to keep the cattle in lower elevation pastures first—with fences or herding—to make them use the lower elevations while that grass is still green and palatable, allowing the higher elevation grasses more time to grow. “Cattle have patterns of grazing behavior regarding time of day—preferring to do most of their grazing in the early morning or late in the day when it’s cool. During the heat of the day they rest in a shady area to chew the cud and then head out to graze again in late afternoon,” Lardner says. Dr. Joseph Stookey (Western College of Veterinary Medicine, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) says cattle have some in-

teresting aspects of grazing behavior that some producers may not be aware of. “Their natural diurnal grazing pattern, with the largest grazing bout occurring before sunset, matches the plants’ highest nutrient content—after a day of photosynthesis. In a choice test, ruminants prefer/select forage harvested in the late afternoon/evening rather than forage harvested in the morning from the same field,” Stookey says. Since cattle tend to graze in the early morning and again in the evening, these are probably the times of day they would eat more feed if we are feeding them. “I don’t think people pay much attention to feeding times, in relationship to what the animals would do naturally. There have been some studies looking at this in the feedlot industry, regarding when is the most optimum time to feed,” says Stookey. “Cattle don’t like to eat as much during the heat of the day in the summer. If the biggest feeding is in the late afternoon or evening they clean it up better. “If you look at the amount of intake when cattle are grazing, they actually eat more in the evening than they do in the morning. Logically we’d say this is probably because it helps them get through the night, but you could also say that they’d need a big meal after they get up again in the morning to graze, since they are relatively empty. You could justify either time, but we now realize that the reason they graze more in the evening is because of the nutrition level of the plants at that time of day,” Stookey says. “A series of USDA studies (results published in 1999, 2002 and 2005) looked at animals’ ability to choose different forages. The researchers cut some hay in the morning and some in the evening and used this in these choice tests. They’ve done it now with cattle, goats, sheep, and they all prefer and are able to select the hay that’s cut in the late afternoon and evening. When you analyze that hay in the lab, it shows that it has a higher level of carbohydrates because that plant stored more nutrients during photosynthesis through the -- continued on pg. 40 Texas Longhorn Trails

By morning some of the nutrients have moved down into the roots during the night. “We can’t see any difference with the eye, but the grazing animals can detect the difference in these forages,” Stookey says. After thousands of years of evolution, the grazing animals are well tuned in to the differences in the forage plants, and have a keen sense of what is most palatable and nutritious. In winter during cold weather, cattle tend to graze after the sun comes up and stop grazing soon after the sun goes down. They don’t like to stir from their warm beds until sunup, and usually try to seek a good bedding area before the temperature drops after sundown. “During sunlight hours they also tend to avoid shade (even the shadows of their

herdmates) and they prefer to stand perpendicular to the sun, to soak in as much warmth as possible. They absorb a lot of heat from direct sunlight,” he says. At sunup they generally get up from their beds and hike to the spot in their pasture where the sun will hit first. When feeding cows supplementary forage or protein during winter, knowing their grazing habits may enable the producer to feed at the best time of day to aid rather than hinder their total intake. If the cattle are grazing a winter pasture, you want them to graze as much as possible even though you are giving them a supplement. It might be best to time it so you don’t disrupt their morning or late afternoon grazing period. If the weather is really cold and the cattle are slow to get going in the morning, however, it might pay to feed them early in the morning to stimulate them to get started eating sooner. During summer in a rotational grazing or mob grazing program, knowing the natural grazing habits of cattle may help you decide when the best time(s) of day might be to move them to the new pasture.

• Get of Sire and Produce of Dam will each offer a Junior Division and a Senior Division. • Each Division is based on the age of the offspring of the animal entered. The Junior Division consists of offspring between the ages of two and five years of age. The Senior Division consists of offspring six years and older. • Sires must have three offspring in any Division to compete in that Division. Nebraska State Fair World Qualifying Longhorn shows, known as the Ray Bohy Texas Longhorn Shows, are scheduled again for the first weekend of the fair – August 29-30, 2015 in Grand Island, NE. There will be two World Qualifying Youth, Halter and Free Division shows this year. Saturday, all the loose cattle will be shown, including the trophy steers. People love to come to watch both the Longhorns and the draft horses which are shown following the trophy steers. It is a huge building so there will be plenty of room to house all the longhorns with a wash rack inside! This facility is awesome and is connected to the 5 Point Bank Arena where we show the cattle. A special raffle drawing will be held this year on the last day of the State Fair longhorn shows, August 30th. A FAMILY AFFAIR – Chris and Brandi Lindsey By Jordan Glidewell Raising cattle is a way of life for some people, and this is nothing new. Some consider it a source of income, a staple of their Western heritage or simply a hobby. For Chris and Brandi Lindsey, raising Texas Longhorn cattle is a family affair. The pair, who are in their first year of breeding Longhorns, are owners of Sugar Hill Ranch in Laurel, Mississippi. Chris’ Longhorn background began when he was growing up next door to Sherman Boyles. Boyles, a past president of TLBAA, owned B&B Ranch and introduced Chris to the Texas Longhorn. Chris was soon hooked on the diversity of the breed and exhibited cattle for B&B Ranch throughout junior high and high school. During his last year as a showman, he exhibited HD Edge’s Emmy who won Grand Champion Female at the 1998 TLBAA World Show. This would be Chris’ last year to attend the show until 2015. Chris eventually left the show ring and moved to the commercial industry. Everything changed when his nineyear-old son, Tyler, expressed an interest in showing. The Lindsey’s sold their commercial herd and purchased 30-40 head of Longhorns. Chris picked up where he left off and got reacquainted with TLBAA and the show circuit. In June the family packed their things and headed to Fort Worth, Texas for both the 2015 TLBAA Longhorn Expo and Diann Chase Longhorn Scholarship Expo. They kept their cattle at the nearby Sand Dollar Ranch in Jacksboro during the layover between shows. Their bull, TL Fenway, won Reserve Junior Champion at the World Open Show, not to mention a few other class winners. Tyler did great at both shows and walked away with several scholarships. Purchasing Sanddollar Escalade from Sand Dollar Ranch has been an exciting move for Sugar Hill Ranch. They are impressed with how his calves dominated the shows this year and are proud to build a good herd off such a young bull. Sanddollar Escalade has proven his genetics by producing CL Bellamy, the 2015 TLBAA World Grand Champion Female, off his first calf crop. CL Bellamy was exhibited by Caitlyn Holson of

B&H Longhorns. “We enjoy getting good cattle from good folks,” Chris said. “Cindy Dennis and Ryan Culpepper have helped us out a lot, among others.” In addition to owning a chain of barbecue restaurants as a primary business and caring for his own herd, Chris wants to help breeders in his area promote their cattle as well. He is in the process of starting a new affiliate called the Dixie Texas Longhorn Association. He hopes this will spark more interest in breeding and showing Longhorn cattle in a part of the country where not much is taking place. “Texas people want somewhere else to show rather than traveling an hour or so down the road,” Chris said. “People in this area also need more opportunities to showcase their animals.” To kick everything off, the Lindsey’s are putting on the Deep South Longhorn Shootout on September 11th in Laurel, Mississippi. The world-qualifying show will offer TLBT youth points and a barn party. Chris and Brandi hope this will be the beginning of more shows to come in Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and even the Carolina’s. The Lindsey’s plan to continue breeding for middle-ofthe-road Longhorns with big bodies and horns. Growing their herd and having their first calf crop are just a few things Sugar Hill Ranch is looking forward to. They are excited to continue meeting the great people the Longhorn breed has to offer!

Board of Directors Approve the Establishment of the

Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame Both the TLBAA and TLBA Foundation boards unanimously approved the establishment of the Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame. The purpose of the Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame is to preserve the great history of the Texas Longhorn cattle breed and to recognize individuals who have had the greatest impact and influence on the breed. Induction into the Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual, whose contributions and commitment have truly shaped the breed. Future Hall of Fame inductees will be honored and showcased in the TLBAA Headquarters and Museum. The Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame standing committee was also approved which will support this new initiative and receive nominations for inductees. “This project has been talked about for some time now. It is exciting to see it finally come together. Our industry should have a Hall of Fame and this is long overdue,” said Todd McKnight, TLBAA Chairman of the Board. The nomination criteria, process and selection criteria include: NOMINATION CRITERIA Any TLBAA member in good standing may submit a nomination. Nominee must have been an outstanding contributor over a period of years either as a breeder, competitor or contributor to the Texas Longhorn breed. The nominee should have been or is currently a member of the TLBAA. A nominee may be either living or deceased. NOMINATION PROCESS Nomination of an individual must be submitted using the form provided by TLBAF. Incomplete nominations will not be accepted. Materials which may be included with the nomination form are photographs, newspaper or other publication clippings, multimedia items, URL addresses for online videos, competition records from the TLBAA’s HORNS system or other related organizations, reference letters from those who know or knew the nominee, a personal testament from the individual preparing the nomination, or relevant passages from books containing biographical information on the nominee. If these items are sent in, they will not be returned and will become a part of the archives. Nomination forms and supporting materials must be submitted UNBOUND on traditional letter size paper (8.5”x11”). The nomination process considers individuals addressing the following criteria: a. Accomplishments in the Longhorn industry b. National importance within the Longhorn industry c. Contributions made to the Longhorn industry d. Enduring value or historical significance of accomplishments e. Personal qualities (integrity, character, uniqueness) Upon receiving a nomination, the TLBAF office will send acknowledgement. The acknowledgement of materials does NOT indicate a successful nomination. Nominations will be accepted year round; however, a nomination must be received by a deadline of September 15 of each year in order for the committee to consider for the following year. A nomination of a person may be reviewed by the Hall of Fame Committee each year for a maximum of three years; however, the nomination must be resubmitted each year. Upon the completion of the third year, if a nominee has not been selected for induction, then the nominator must wait two complete calendar years before resubmitting that particular nominee to the Hall of Fame Committee for consideration. The Hall of Fame Committee, by a majority vote will select the inductees and be confirmed by a majority vote of the TLBAF Board. INDUCTION CEREMONY An induction ceremony will take place annually at the Hall of Fame banquet, co-hosted by the TLBAF and the TLBAA. Inductees will receive appropriate recognition and awards at the banquet. Inductee will also be showcased in the Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame section of the TLBAF Museum (once the building is complete).

Herd Management Guide

SPRING Calving:

1. Continue fly and tick control programs. Anaplasmosis problems can continue until frost, so observe cow herd closely for animals losing body condition and appearing anemic. Commercial supplements containing 150 grams of chlortetracycline per 50 lbs. of salt are available. Continuous feeding of the tetracycline medication during the fly season should provide adequate protection against the disease. 2. As grass matures, realize that the protein value decreases. Feeding of 2-3 lbs. of a high protein supplement (30-40 percent crude protein content) will stimulate the digestion of the mature forage; therefore, the cattle will consume more forage and maintain their body condition as winter approaches.

FALL Calving:

1. Prepare for the start of calving season and separate cow herd into management groups (first-calf heifers, second-calf cows,

mature cows, and open heifers). Watch body condition of the groups closely. Young females entering their first calving season require special nutritional assistance to insure they maintain a reasonable body condition after calving, produce adequate levels for milk for their offspring and rebreed for the coming year. 2. Prepare for herd bull selection and procurement. Conduct breeding soundness exams and fertility checks on all bulls prior to the breeding season.
