EDITOR’S NOTES HAPPY HECTIC HOLIDAYS As your December Trails reaches your mailbox super late, know that in the midst of hectic activity grows good things for the future! The association and the TLBAA Marketing Committee enlisted my help in onboarding a Marketing Coordinator that will take some very important but neglected tasks off my plate. I am happy to say our new addition to the team will start this month. This position will manage our Facebook presence, Google ad grant marketing efforts, work to get the new website launched and help promote our sales and events. It will take a bit to get everything up to speed but it’s exciting to see what’s going to be new in the near future. For the present, with the change in dates for the Horn Showcase, my helping with the event, and hiring efforts, combined with the biggest production issue we have... disaster for the timeline of mailing. Thank you all for your continued patience when this happens. Our goal for 2022 is to say goodbye to these late issues one way or another. The good news is this issue showcases the Cash Cows (Longhorns selling for $10,000 and up at public auction) and what an increase from the previous year! The Longhorn industry has hit an upswing and we hope you are all riding the wave. As the holidays are upon us, I do hope you and yours have a very blessed holiday season and Happy New Year! Until next month, Blessings,

Association News
TLBAA Announces New Staff Members You may have heard a few new voices and names this month when you’ve called in to the TLBAA office. Please meet our newest associates below, two filling existing roles and one stepping onto a new role as Marketing Coordinator. Please take a moment to meet each one below and welcome them to our association staff.
REGISTRATIONS / ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT I’m Shannon Gordon and I am the new Registrations/Administrative Assistant. I was born in Louisiana and moved to Texas when I was 14. I excelled in tennis by working hard and always striving to improve. It was my love of the sport and passion for life that has led me to succeed in business and made me the perfect fit for TLBAA. When I saw the open position my first thought was “I will be perfect for this position, except for the fact that I do not know much about cattle”. I figured that my newfound passion for hunting with my husband, love of the country and a thirst to learn new things, that I would quickly catch on to the cattle industry. Although I’ve only been here a short time, I have been amazed at the people I have met, how much they love their Longhorns, and the amount of dedication and work they put into their animals and ranches. I’m excited to continue learning, meeting members and most of all helping make TLBAA the best source for Longhorn registration and the place that helps every rancher/ owner reach their Longhorn goals.
RECEPTIONIST / OFFICE ASSISTANT Hi, my name is Megan Smith and I am the new Receptionist / Office Assistant. Prior to this position I have worked as an administrative/leasing assistant in commercial real estate leasing and management for the past 7 years and worked for a commercial property management company for 7 years prior that. After all those years in the commercial real estate world, I am excited to be a part of the TLBAA and to learn new things in a field of work completely different from what I have been doing. Outside of work all my time is spent raising my three kids and attending their events and activities. The majority of this time is spent at the 4-H barn where my kids raise their show pigs. 4-H and FFA has been a huge part of our life since my daughter started showing over 10 years ago when she was in 3rd grade, she has since graduated but passed her love for pigs and 4-H onto my youngest who is in his third year of raising pigs. Being involved in these things helped to make the decision to get out of the real estate world and try something new at Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America.
MARKETING COORDINATOR My name is Mason Runyon, and I am the new Marketing Coordinator for the TLBAA. I grew up in Eastern Kentucky and I graduated from Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. I am a huge Kentucky football and basketball fan, but there isn’t a live sporting event I wouldn’t go to. I enjoy traveling and taking in as much of America and the world as I can. And even though Texas is where I live now, the Bluegrass State will always be my home. I am joining the TLBAA after working for the Army for the last few months in Fort Shafter, Hawaii, where I had the opportunity to capture photos and videos, as well as tell the stories of the units based out of Shafter. I have found that I have a passion for story telling in the form of photos and videos and being able to bring my own creativity to life. That’s part of the reason why I am really excited to be able to funnel that creativity into multimedia projects for the TLBAA and share the stories of the association and its members, as well as illuminating the iconic Longhorn itself. 14 | December 2021

Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award John & Christine Talley John & Christine Talley started their program in 2014 with a simple goal of enjoying and learning about the breed so they could breed for quality that would advance the future of the Texas Longhorns. They have certainly accomplished this in a few short years! They sought out and have listened to industry leaders and created a herd with solid genetics. These genetics include bulls like Cowboy Catchit Chex, Bubba Tuff Chex, and Delta Lucky Ace combined with a strong line of females from programs like Bob Loomis, Jimmy Jones, G&G and Rolling D to name a few. But it was not just purchasing these quality animals that has made them worthy of this recognition, it is the time they have put into truly learning this breed that sets them apart. The success of their breeding program was recognized as the Talley’s began winning numerous competitive futurities. These wins have now been repeated all across the country over the last several years. In addition, Christine’s eye for cattle has been sought after to judge futurities. Their success wasn’t a fluke! Their passion for the breed is evidenced by their welcoming nature to new breeders, their participation in various Longhorn affiliate activities, and their commitment to traveling to futurities and to visit with other breeders across the country. In a short period of time they have created a breeding program that is truly outstanding and deserving of this recognition. They represent how hard work and studying the cattle can be rewarded. The best cattle they own are the cattle they created. That’s what its all about.H 16 | December 2021
Kent & Sandy Harrell The impact that this one program has made on an industry will not be forgotten. They have been in the budiness almost 4 decades and during that time have raised animals that have won the Horn Showcase and the World Show. They are wonderful promoters of the breed through print advertising and social media marketing. Their sire, Rebel HR, sold private treaty half interest as well as a semen syndication this past year. This home bred bull has now generated over $400k in partnership, semen and progeny sales. They are always willing to offer a helping hand to new breeders to get them off to a great start. Their program would be described as built, not bought. Their herd sire line up is second to none.H
Hudson Longhorns Bill and Elizabeth Hudson, along with Mike Willinger, run one of the top herds in the nation. They have bred and raised some phenomenal animals in the past several years, bulls and heifers alike. They have consistently won and placed in futurities across the nation. They are breeding with long-term intentions to create beautiful, well balanced Longhorns with lots of horn, but also calm and great milkers. They have accomplished this through careful, selective breeding to obtain superior replacement heifers and bulls for their program. They have raised tremendous bulls that are being used to the betterment of other herds as well. They are so welcoming to new breeders and always there to help them make good decisions as to how to invest in their own herd and build their own breeding program. They treat new breeders fairly and honestly. They are great examples of what the Longhorn industry is all about. Good people enjoying and sharing a passion for Longhorn cattle. I believe the consistency and quality of the animals they have been raising and their dedication to helping others do the same make them eligible for Breeder of the Year in 2021.H
TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS
Jack Phillips Award Russell Fairchild Russell has shown throughout his life how dedicated he is to the Texas Longhorn cattle breed, along with dedication and love for TLBAA members and doing what he can to help breeders succeed and the Association to continue to grow. He puts in endless hours every year to help make our annual Eddie Wood Sale a success. He is always available to the breeders to answer questions and has gone above and beyond to help make members feel welcomed as breeders, friends and family. He is a fantastic show judge, show chairman, a board member and announcer. He exemplifies what a member of this association should be. He is encouraging to our youth members and his knowledge of the breed is impeccable. I can’t think of a more deserving person for this award.H
El Coyote Ranch, The Bass Family, Felix, Della & Felicia Serna Felix, Della, Felicia, the Bass family and the entire staff at the El Coyote Longhorn Ranch work tirelessly and quietly to help children, new breeders and established breeders alike to reach their goals. Over the years it would be impossible to count the kids they have assisted in life through offering cattle for them to show and taking them to shows. They give time and resources to these children to enable them to participate in an adventure that they might not otherwise be able to do. All the while they are learning many valuable lessons that will be used along their journey in life. They are a very loving, sincere, honest and hard working group of people and deserve recognition through the Jack Phillips award.. H
Dr. Gene Berry “Doc” is an individual that has been a member of the TLBAA since the early 1980’s. His program of Rocking B Longhorns can be recognized with Bayou as a prefix in the animal’s name. He has served on the TLBAA Board of Directors, TLBF Hall of Fame Chairperson, and participated in Horn Showcase and the World Show. One does not have to be outspoken to be heard, but to have a reflection of goals accomplished to move a breed and industry forward.H
Scott Pace Scott has helped several breeders here in Utah and Nevada, and really all over, improve their herds. He is always someone I can call and ask questions and get honest, reliable answers. He helped me elevate my herd to a better level. He also worked countless hours with me, showing me how to do vaccines, hoof trimming, and just doctoring animals in general. He also showed me how to get animals prepared for shows and futurities. Last year they put on the Horn Showcase satellite measuring here in Northern Utah. I personally just haven’t seen anyone so dedicated to the breed and help out so many people. All of this without asking anything else in return..H
Elmer Parker Lifetime Achievement Award Richard Filip A man of few words, but a presence in an industry that cannot be understated. A wonderful program that has influenced our breed. His cattle have huge horns yet reflect an animal that still represents all the characteristics you should desire in a traditional Longhorn. An active promoter of his program in Trails Magazine as well as sale publications. His ranch has a strong social media presence that delivers education to breeders to give them a platform to learn from. H
Ken Kirkham Ken Kirkham has been promoting Longhorns and bringing in new people for more than 35 years. He had an eye for quality and incorporated industry leading genetics into his program which he often resold for more than he invested. The offspring of these purchases after people saw their production success and the offspring wee in demand as well. He also served as a consultant and judged shows across the U.S. as well. Attending sales with Ken, people often come up and say that he got them started with the breed. One couple even asked for his autograph! Promoting the breed never stops for Ken. He’s a salesman! He sent 1,000’s of tapes out promoting the Longhorn breed. He had Roundup’s photo and accomplishments on his pickup door and drives it around constantly. He even wrote a book that’s being published called “The Last Round-Up”. He hasn’t slowed

TLBAA SPECIAL AWARDS CONT’D down growing his program, and recently purchased a grandson of the biggest Longhorn bull in the world and is enjoying those new babies hitting the ground. Ken has spent his life improving and promoting the breed and is continuing to do so. ★
MEL RALEY RISING STAR AWARD James and Victoria Wars James and Victoria Wars started in the Longhorn business 4 years ago with one cow and have since built a tremendous herd of registered cattle, including and up and coming young herd sire, Respected Gun 705. Their herd has already produced show calves with numerous championships and Hall of Fame winners. They have become great supporters of the breed, purchasing cattle at several sales and sponsoring shows and futurities. James has served as a futurity judge and an announcer at several youth shows. He has also volunteered his time as a ring steward and worked in the make-ready area at shows as the opportunity has presented itself. James and Victoria are proud supporters and sponsors of the Ark-La-Tex Wayne “Boppa” Du Bose Calf Program. James and Victoria are doing a tremendous job as new breeders and are truly deserving of the Mel Raley Rising Star Award.. ★
Dean Whitlock Whitlock Longhorns has been in the breed for just over 4 years, and over the last year and a half have made a lasting impact on the breed. In 2020 Whitlock Longhorns had the Grand Champion Female, Superior and Bronze Award winner with HR Rebel Bang at the Horn Showcase. In 2021 Whitlock Longhorns had the Legacy Futurity winner and high futurity sale with BC 50-50 Super. His social media marketing is bringing a new excitement to the breed as well as encouraging and motivating new breeders. Whitlock Longhorns is a huge supporter of making the most of what you have available by utilizing AI, ET and IVF practices with not only their herd, but partnering with other breeders to make their herds and the industry better! Whitlock Longhorns is building an amazing program and at the same time making our industry better and more fun! ★

Lee Lindsey I would like to nominate Lee Lindsey. I watched him start with a couple of malnourished heifers. After a lot of research and asking questions about what they needed and what was lacking in their diet, and after several months of good feed and quality hay, they are healthy and have produced good healthy calves. He really promotes the breed in the southeast (Georgia). It has definitely become his passion. A couple of calves are being conditioned to handle so that his grandchildren can show. We really hope to see more Longhorns in the Peach State. He has introduced several friends and local farmers to the breed, and just like him, you can see their passion growing. ★
OFFICIAL BALLOT can be found on Pg. 20 Congratulations to all who were nominated. Being nominated for these special awards, given by fellow breeders, is an honor. If you want to know more about the criteria for each award or see past winners before casting your vote, you may refer back to September 2021 Trails Magazine, pg. 42 or visit www.tlbaa.org and there is a link under the heading “Our Upcoming Events” beneath the photo.

Rodger Damrow Colorful Calf Entries Due December 31st! In the Texas Longhorn industry there are events that look at two out of three aspects of the breed, conformation and horn, but never has there been an event that features the uniqueness of colors so evident in the breed. The “Rodger Damrow Colorful Calf Contest” is respectfully titled after longtime Nebraska Texas Longhorn Association President, Rodger Damrow, who was very fond of colorful calves. It allows TLBAA members to show off the color being produced in their herd and may even win them a spot on the front cover of March 2022 Trails Magazine! All entries will be featured in March Trails, so there are no losers. Here’s how the contest will work: • A colorful photo of an active TLBAA member’s most colorful calf born in 2021, will be submitted to the TLBAA office. The picture must be high quality. Preferred format is digital file from a camera, saved and sent at maximum file size. If using a cell phone, please do not use zoom. Get close to the calf. If sending a print to be scanned it must be at least 8 x 10 inches and printed out as a photo (Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, Office Stores). • A $20 entry fee made payable to the TLBAA is to be included with the photo. • Members can enter more than one animal, but each entry must have a TLBAA registration number or, if too young to be branded, the TLBAA registration numbers of both sire and dam. • Contest will be open until December 31st, 2021. • Winners will be decided by an independent judge not involved in the contest. • Winners will be announced during the Longhorn weekend in January. • The winning entry will be featured on the front cover of TRAILS. (If possible, think vertical when snapping the photo) The additional finalists will be featured elsewhere in the magazine.
Entries must be e-mailed or mailed (postmarked) to the TLBAA office by December 31st. Get involved, check your 2021 calves and pick your entries for this new contest. For questions or concerns, email Tina DuBose ( tinadubose10@gmail.com), Deb Lesyk (halters.buckets@yahoo.com), or Myra Basham at the TLBAA office (myra@ tlbaa.org). Let’s see if we can have entries from every state and country that has TLBAA members. Make it fun and encourage other members to send entries.

What About Private Treaty Sales? Based on transfer activity for 2021, private treaty sales were flourishing as well. There have been lots of conversational comments about prices being up, but this is not publicly documented data therefore it cannot count towards the Cash Cow report. As the title indicates, it is information people prefer to keep private.

HEALTH
Frostbite: Warming Cold or Frozen Calves Calves born during blizzards or cold weather become immediately chilled, and older calves may also suffer frostbite if they don’t have shelter. A sick calf may chill and suffer frozen extremities, due to circulatory impairment. A scouring calf, for instance, may be dehydrated, and his extremities become cold and more vulnerable to freezing. Even an older animal may suffer frostbite in certain situations if the blood circulation has been compromised. Any calf with body temperature below 100 degrees F. needs warming. It pays to have a thermometer and take the calf’s temperature, to know how cold he really is. There are several ways to safely warm calves the methods you choose may depend on your facilities and whether you can get the calf into a warm place. Dr. Robert Callan (Colorado State University) says a newborn calf needs colostrum immediately, to provide energy so he can produce his own body heat. Feed at least a quart. Photo courtesy of Don Holland. If he’s too cold to suck, give it by tube. A cold calf only has about 2 hours’ worth of stored energy in terms of brown fat, and what was left in the stomach from the amniotic fluid. When those stores are used up, he can’t keep warm enough to sustain life in cold weather. Colostrum is the best thing to feed him because it’s easy to digest and contains twice the fat energy of regular milk.
not only warming the cold body surface, but the calf is breathing warm air into the lungs, which helps raise his core temperature. All his blood is going through his lungs, so if he can breathe warm air this really helps. A warming crate can be very beneficial for hypothermic calves,” he says. In some cases your first option might be to put a cold calf on the floor of your pickup with the heater running—if you find him a long ways from the barn or electricity source. If his feet are cold, he is chilled, and you must get him warm. Callan recommends rechecking the calf’s temperature every few hours to make sure it is rising. “The energy provided with one feeding of colostrum or milk can be used up in 4 to 6 hours and the calf may need some more,” says Callan. The main thing is get the calf out of the snow (onto some straw or something dry where the cow can lick him dry and take care of him), and dried if he’s chilled already. If you can get the calf indoors in a warm place, you can use warm water to help thaw cold, freezing extremities (feet, ears, tail), but if he’s still outdoors it’s counterproductive to use hot water. You’re losing ground if you keep the calf wet, because the moisture cools so fast. You have to get him dry. Hot water bottles wrapped in towels, or electric blankets, can also help a calf that’s just chilled and not frozen. Some years the weather may be so cold (or the calf is born during a blizA warming box allows the lungs to fill with warm zard) that even a well-mothered calf air, allowing the calf to raise his core temperature may freeze if he’s born outdoors with no shelter. has a belly full of colostrum or milk (regular milk works fine for an older calf that’s not newborn) and is now dry, he can probably go back out with mom. If he suffered frostbitten ears, tail or feet, however, and those extremities are compromised, he needs to stay indoors (perhaps with mom in a stall in the barn, with good bedding) until he is recovered and the frostbitten tissues are no longer swollen and painful. Otherwise they are more vulnerable to cold stress and freezing again.
frozen and how damaged the tissue is, and how long it’s been frozen. If frostbite is severe you can’t reverse it. All you can do is keep it from being worse. Nothing you can put on it will make any difference. Taping the ears against the body might help prevent frostbite (keeping the ears warmer, in severely cold weather) but this will not reverse frostbite.
Don’t rub frozen skin too vigorously or it may cause further injury to already damaged tissue. FROSTBITE If body tissues become too cold, ice crystals form inside cell membranes and the cells rupture, killing the tissues. If it’s just the superficial skin layers, they become discolored then slough away (like a superficial burn peeling off). Damage to deeper layers and to small blood vessels near the surface may lead to more extensive tissue death. If legs, tail and ears are completely frozen, the calf may eventually lose his ears, or tail, or even his feet. Pricking the frozen extremity with a pin or needle (to see if there is any blood supply or any sensation/feeling in the tissues) can be a clue as to whether the tissue has a chance to return to proper function. If the skin is actually frozen, don’t rub the cold extremities too vigorously (in an attempt to stimulate better circulation) since this may further injure the damaged skin. If the tissue has not completely died, the frozen area may become swollen as blood returns to the area, due to direct injury to the blood vessels and impairment of fluid movement in and out of the tissues. For frozen tissue, there are no magic fixes, and whether recovery is possible depends on how deeply

HEALTH PREVENTION If weather is severely cold and/or windy, you can try to put every calving cow in the barn, out of the wind-where she can be observed and the calf warmed soon after birth if necessary. If you find a newborn calf outdoors you can probably prevent severe frostbite if get him indoors quick enough and get him warm. If you are winter calving, or even early spring when a freak storm may dump a lot of snow or temperatures suddenly drop, you can either spend a lot of time with the calving cows or have calving cameras, or both. Cameras can help in letting you know who is calving, without having to be out there continually to check the cows. This enables you to get out there and take care of the newborn calf without having to be out there all night with them.
PRECAUTIONS The quickest way to thaw a frozen calf is with warm water, but if you use this method make sure the water is not too hot. If it’s very much above normal body temperature, it may damage the skin—which is already compromised if it’s frostbitten. Rapid thaw at moderate temperature (100 to 105 degrees F) is best. Heat injury is
always a risk if water is above 115 degrees. Monitor rectal temperature to make sure you don’t overheat the calf. There have been reports of extremely cold calves going into shock and dying when put into hot water. The sudden change may stop the heart. In a cold animal, blood has been shunted away from the extremities and into the body core, to try to keep internal organs warm enough to keep functioning. If you suddenly put the cold calf into hot water this may drive cold from the outer body surfaces into the body core. If the heart is chilled too much (cold shock), it will stop, and the calf will suddenly die. It’s better to start with lukewarm water and gradually warm it to body temperature (101 degrees for a calf). Remember that humans who suffer hypothermia or whose temperature is drastically lowered for surgery are brought back to normal temperature slowly. If you warm the calf in a tub, completely dry him before he goes back outside to cold temperatures. If he’s wet, he may chill again. Make sure you don’t wash all the amniotic fluid off a newborn calf. If he’s perfectly clean and dry when you take him back to mama she may not recognize his smell and refuse to believe that it’s her calf!

In Memoriam
Vance Lane Farner October 17, 1961 - October 24, 2021 Vance Lane Farner, 60, passed away Sunday, October 24th, 2021 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Vance was born in Aiken, South Carolina on October 17th 1961 to Leonard and Phyllis (Adams) Farner. Vance attended Caney Valley High School in Caney, Kansas and graduated in 1979. After graduation Vance began working at Big Valley Lumber in Caney. He continued to work in the lumber business for the majority of his life, but he was most recently a pipeline inspector. Vance lived in various cities across the country, but Niotaze was always his true home. Vance was happiest when helping people and was the most selfless man around. He loved his family and friends unconditionally and was always looking for a reason to spend time together. He had the biggest heart, always possessed a childlike spirit, and was as ornery as they come. His laugh was contagious, he was the life of any party, and he never met a stranger. He lived life to the fullest and always had a smile on his face. Vance’s favorite pastimes were raising longhorn cattle and cheering Brianna on in the pool; they each brought him so much joy. He is survived by his very best friend Laurie McElroy, his daughter Marty and her husband Mitch Ruark, his favorite granddaughter Brianna Ruark, his sister Brenda and her husband Curtis Artherton, his niece Kristi and her husband Lyle French, his nephew Dustin and his wife Rumor Artherton, and his great nephews Sawyer and Carsen French and Kyzer Artherton. Vance is preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Phyllis Farner, and his brother Frank Farner. Vance absolutely loved supporting his granddaughter in her competitive swimming and educational goals; therefore, in lieu of flowers an account has been set up at Community National Bank and Trust 501 E 4th Ave., Caney, KS 67333, (620)879-5500, account number 1430047232 with the funds going to Brianna’s swim team and future college education. Memorials are published free of charge based on information shared by the family or a close family friend. Additional information regarding involvement in the Longhorn breed may be provided along with the published obituary, or a customer memorial specifically for the Longhorn industry may be provided. It may be edited to fit available space. Please submit memorials, or any questions, to myra@tlbaa.org.

Message
At the beginning of December, I announced 3 days of shows at the Holiday Extravaganza in Denton. I’ve enjoyed several years of being in the spotlight, showing my cattle in the ring and celebrating the wins. As I sat in the announcer stand, I realized that being in the spotlight is different than shining the spotlight for someone else. I didn’t walk away with any buckles that weekend, not even a ribbon. But I did walk away with a feeling of celebration, pride and honor to be part of an organization that spotlights youth and the historic, iconic longhorn breed. My sister spent most of the weekend working as a ring steward during the show and she too shared a similar feeling about her experience. During this Christmas season, we celebrate the greatest gift ever given. He was born in a barn under a “spotlight”, the Star of Bethlehem. He did not stay in the spotlight long though as He began to lead a life of service. As my longhorn youth show years are coming to a close in the next several months, I find my passion for the breed growing stronger. My desire to serve the longhorn community grows as I step back from the spotlight and shine it, for the next generation. I hope this Christmas brings you peace, happiness, many gifts that can’t be purchased and wrapped. Merry Christmas!! #letsgooutwithabang
Jacob Lowrie “Shine your light and make a positive impact on the world; there is nothing so honorable as helping improve the lives of others.” -Roy T. Bennett
Longhorns have been a part of my life since I was six years old. At the Louisiana State Fair, I showed a borrowed calf named Dreamboat. I walked in the arena and immediately fell in love. The lights, the focus, the animals, and most of all, the people. Many people were happy to offer advice, whether it be about showing itself, the training of the animals, and everything in between. I spent years learning about these amazing animals and traveling around the south to shows. I made lifetime friends and we grew together. I’ve even become the mentor to other young showmen and women, and have had the honor of watching them grow and learn. Twelve years later, in November 2021, I ended my show career at the very same show I started at. I decided that it was time I let someone else take the lead in the show ring, pun intended! I will never lose my love for the show ring, but I know I need to focus elsewhere now. I am planning on going to college at Texas A&M to study English and Creative Writing. As excited as I am for the future, I will never forget all the people that helped me grow. From those who have been there from the beginning, to those who are just recently getting to know me, I will never forget how much the Longhorn community has helped and inspired me. Stay awesome everyone! #BuildingABetterTomorrow 42 | December 2021
TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS
TLBT OFFICER SPOTLIGHT: TLBT Officer Postion: Parliamentarian 1.) Why did you join TLBT? I was born into the TLBT. My bother and sister were showing Longhorns when I was born. I can’t imagine not being in the TLBT! 2.) What is your favorite Longhorn show and why? My favorite Longhorn show is in Lufkin because I love the costume contest! 3.) Where did you earn your first reward? What type of award? I earned 3rd place in showmanship at WTLA Abilene show in 2020. I won cash and immediately headed to the concession stand and bought sodas for all my friends! 4.) What is your funniest TLBT moment? At the Lufkin costume contest, I was dressed like a magician and my steer, STORMCHASER, was dressed like a bunny. I lost the lead and he was actually bouncing around the ring like a real bunny! 5.) Do you enjoy showing Longhorns? Why? The best part of showing Longhorns is hanging out with my friends. I like it a lot. 6.) What has been your biggest influence while showing Longhorns? Jacob and Allison have helped me a lot to prepare to show Longhorns. My friend Stoney Rogers gives me pep talks in the make ready area and gives me high fives when I come out of the ring. I love when my friends encourage me. 7.) What have you learned while you have been showing Longhorns that has helped you grow as a person? We all have bad days, but I’ll always love my cows…. Even if they act up in the ring.
MASON SMITH
8.) What is the best part about being a member of TLBT? The best part about being a TLBT member is hanging out with friends that also love Longhorns and dirt! 9.) What advice would you give a newcomer to TLBT? Have fun! Don’t take the competition so serious. 10.) Tell us about a time when you tried something new! I recently did a horseback lesson- and I loved it! 11.) Do you think it is more fun to be a parent or a child? Definitely more fun to be a child. Parents have to work all the time and don’t get to play with their friends in the dirt, or even play tag! 12.) If you started your own charity, who would you want to help? I would make a charity to help vets…..veterinarians. They must get sad sometimes, having to put down animals or take care of injured and sick animals. I think vets could use a big hug sometimes and that’s what my charity would be. 13.) Tell us a fun fact about yourself! I am the class president of my school- B. Wilder Homeschool. 14.) If you could have a character from a book or movie be your best friend, who would it be and why? I would want Jesus to be my best friend. He was born in a barn and I love being in the barn. I think he was born in Texas like me. And he didn’t wear shoes a lot, just like me. Jesus was a carpenter and I want to be a construction worker. We’d be best friends. 15.) If you created your own school, what would the student do all day? I have my own school! We study English, Math, History and Science and spend a lot of time doing PE (working cows, archery, hay bale jumping, training parakeets to talk). If I had my way, we’d play all day!

TEXAS LONGHORN BREEDER GULF COAST ASSOCIATION
Member Spotlight: Rick’s favorite hobby was hunting big deer in south Texas. Tracey’s favorite hobby was shopping. Then in 1997, one of his hunting buddies (Enrique Guerra) invited Rick to see his Longhorn operation in south Texas. That is when the Longhorn venture started for Rick and Tracey. Enrique ended up selling Rick five Longhorn steers. They enjoyed the steers at their Fredericksburg ranch and quickly decided that they wanted some breeding stock. That led them to the TLBAA and later the TLBGCA. They were quick to realize that all Longhorns were not the same. Horn seemed to add value to the cattle. By now, all of the original cattle had been replaced with cattle that had more horn. It seemed like cattle with 60” of horn were really valuable, so they measured all of their cattle and found out they did not own a 60” animal. Another breeder (Ross Polk) told Rick about the Dalgood Chart and horn projections. The projections estimated how much horn a young animal would have at maturity. Everything was measured again and projected. Guess what? Nothing projected to ever be 60”. Enter the next set of cattle. Now, nothing on the ranch had a projection of less than 60” and some of these cattle were even over 60”. Gaining ground. They had a young bull that had a lot of horn and a lot of potential (Chuckwagon’s Wine). The different associations horn measurement contests seemed like a good way of measuring your cattle against the industry’s cattle. They entered a young bull and their four best cows in the TLMA’s Longhorn World Championship and also in the Horn Showcase. The events were bitter/ sweet. The bull won a bronze at the TLMA event in Oklahoma, but he was killed at the event in a freak accident. In attending their first horn measuring events, they learned that 60” was the old standard. Now, everyone has 70” cattle. They met Bob and Pam Loomis and followed them home. The Loomises seemed to do pretty well at the measurement events, so Rick and Tracey bought another trailer load of cattle from them and started replacing the 60” cattle that they had. In the following years 70” went to 80”, then 90”, and now 100”. All in twenty years. In fifteen of those years, Rick and Tracey won 105 bronzes with their cattle. They had finally figured out the horn growth portion of the business. During that time period, Rick became the President of the TLBGCA and conducted an annual Longhorn sale as a fundraiser. His fundraising efforts brought in such a large sum of money during his tenure enabling the TLBGCA to award $40,000 in scholarships his last year as President in 2018 and an additional $71,000 the following three years! Rick also hosted an annual sale in Oklahoma with Bob Loomis. Rick and Tracey had an annual sale at their Fredericksburg ranch. Tracey even cooked a meal for the participants and workers on sale day. During that time period, Rick also put together the Horn Showcase Sale for three years. For fifteen years, their normal herd was 100 120 head of Longhorn cattle. It was a labor of love. Winding down, it’s now 2021. No more ranch and no more cattle. Rick’s favorite hobby is still hunting big deer in south Texas, and Tracey’s favorite hobby is still shopping. The only cow they have is in their freezer, and Rick is putting together his last sale in March 2022 for the TLBGCA.
