EDITOR’S NOTES
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
2022 was a roller coaster. There were records broken in Longhorn cattle sales, horn measurement records topped and a lot of activity and new members in the Longhorn industry. But there were lows for a lot of folks due to extensive drought conditions and sever weather events. Overall the Longhorn world made it through the tough times okay and the high times were exhilarating.
One of the highest of highs was the selling of a $700,000 Longhorn, followed up by 10 cows selling for six figures. Those are numbers that bring people into the industry and make the public take the Longhorn breed seriously. It creates goals and dreams for breeders who want to one day sell a Cash Cow of their own. It’s certainly possible. This month we show off the Cash Cows of 2022. You can find all the Longhorns who sold at public auction for $10,000 or more starting on pg. 14. And don’t miss “The Making of a $700,000 Longhorn female” on pg. 12.
There is also a lot of new opportunities in the futurity world with the addition of the Futurity Money Earner’s List. See pg. 30 to learn more about this program that recognize those animals whose offspring win money in the Longhorn futurities. It’s great recognition for successful breeding.
If you watch RFD-TV, the only completely Ag-centered network on national TV, you may have seen some commercials promoting the Longhorn breed and the association. There have also been promotions for the Eddie Wood Cowtown Classic aired. Turn to pg. 34 to learn more about this marketing endeavor.
I’m not sure people really understand how being in Trails, or on the website or even doing e-blasts all take their message to tons of potential new Longhorn owners each month.
Here’s an example of how a commercial helps all breeders: Someone sees the RFD-TV commercial. They go to our website, learn more and become interested in the breed. They can access several years of Trails Magazine online for free, thus seeing all ads. They can also go to the online breeders directory to find Longhorn breeders close to them. Or, they may have seen your ranch sign and the commercial peaks their curiosity enough to reach out to you. There are a million ways all these marketing efforts can work together to create interest in the breed and encourage people to reach out to a breeder.
If you want to create a custom package to reach people through all of our outlets over the course of the New Year just reach out to myra@tlbaa. org or call the office and ask for me.
We have a super creative team that can help you reach your marketing goals and stay within any size budget. You don’t have to break the bank to be effective.

TLBAA Announces New Staff Member
You may have received ad proofs from a new email lately. Please meet our newest associate Taylor Rankin below, who has filled the existing role of Graphic Designer for Trails Magazine. Please take a moment to read about her below and welcome her to the association staff.
Graphic Designer
Howdy! My name is Taylor Rankin and I am the new Graphic Designer for TLBAA. I graduated from Texas Tech University in May of 2022 with a major in Agricultural Communications and a minor in Advertising.
Growing up in south Texas, I was highly involved in 4H and FFA showing livestock. Participating in these organizations has allowed me to develop a passion for advocating for the agricultural industry.
Over the past few years, I have worked for organizations such as National Sorghum Producers and The United Sorghum Checkoff Program as their communications intern and High Plains Underground Water Conservation District as their assistant director of communications. When I am not at work, my boyfriend and I are busy chasing around our two corgis and aussie.
I met many members at the 2022 Horn Showcase and cannot express how thankful I was for how welcoming everyone was. Since working here, I have enjoyed getting to know everyone and creating ads for our members.
I look forward to learning more about the longhorn industry and continuing to meet everyone!

HR Rosette: The Making of a $700,000 Longhorn
The bar for Cash Cows, raised to $380,000 in 2017, has reached a height that few thought it would ever hit – an astounding $700,000. Who would pay that much for one cow? What magic cross produced such an exceptional female? There are lots of theories flying around trying to answer these questions. We decided to go to the source on both sides of the transaction.
Why would someone want to pay that much money for one female? “We would like for 6CR Longhorns to be one of the premier Longhorn breeders in the United States, with a focus on conformation, reproduction and tip-to-tip,” says Tim & Nikole Clark of 6CR Longhorns in Oregon. They have been purchasing elite females and partnering on elite bulls over the past 4 years. Their criteria for females: “The animals need to have good conformation, good reproduction history and genetics, and we are looking for animals with the ability to push over 100” tip-to-tip by the age of 6.”
Rosette certainly fit the bill. “We felt she was an excellent animal that has the ability to help shore up our long-term goal of conformation, reproduction and tip-to-tip. Kent and Sandy Harrell did an amazing job with this cow, and the legacy they’ve worked so hard to build is in line with what we hope to accomplish.” The Clarks plan to do IVF work on her, in conjunction with the many bulls they are in partnership on.
While the Clarks do an average amount of private treaty purchasing, they appreciate the role of auctions in the industry. “We enjoy purchasing at auction as it helps to shore up the industry as a whole,” says Tim. “Longhorn auctions can be what longhorn ranches want them to be. Nikole and I believe we all need to support one another to make it successful.”
THE MAKING OF HR ROSETTE
The Harrell’s journey towards raising top caliber Longhorns began more than 30 years ago. Kent had always wanted a ranch, and in the beginning they raised Angus and Angus cross cattle for beef. Then they saw Longhorns at a show in Tulsa, OK, and saw how pretty they were.
“We met Wes and Carrie Hill and they introduced us to their herd and we bought a couple just to pretty up
the place,” explained Sandy. “Then we bought a couple more, and a couple more and you know how the story goes. We met Dr. Bob Kropp, OSU, at a cattle show and he helped us in the beginning to get our herd up to what we needed to show. Our kids got involved in showing and we won more medals and trophies than we had room for and then the kids grew up. We weren’t in it for the money, but for the experience with our family. After that, we sold the herd that was more “beefy” for the show circuit and concentrated on the total package Longhorn, with Dr. Kropp’s help.”
Kent adds, “We started in the longhorn business because of their history, their colorful look, and their hardy nature. It wasn’t long before we found both the crossbred and purebred Angus “boring” and sold both herds to concentrate exclusively on Texas Longhorns. I think all breeders dream about producing a “stellar” animal (cow or bull). We were no different in that regard, but HR Rosette exceeded our wildest dreams. We have been very fortunate and have greatly benefited from the advice of Dr. Bob Kropp in our early years, and Justin Rombeck more recently.”
For many years the ranch and Longhorns were viewed more as a destination for the family to gather and spend time together. “The idea of selling a cow for $700,000 or even $100,000 never entered our minds. In fact, getting Kent to sell cows is often like pulling teeth, so the ranch became our destination place where our children all worked and grew up learning many life lessons that have served them well today. The cows just made the whole experience more realistic and fun” said Sandy. “At our age, I am ready to have the ranch pay for itself. You have to sell cows to do that.”
What’s the “magic mix” genetically speaking? According to Kent, “In HR Rosette’s case we bred a daughter of the legendary LLL Rosemary to the best bull we

have ever raised, Rebel HR. LLL Rosemary has had a tremendous influence in our herd. We have retained many of her daughters in the herd and have sold some to other breeders who know her track record. In this breeding we combined Hunts Command Respect lineage with JR Grand Slam who I still consider one of the great bulls in our breed.”
That daughter of LLL Rosemary was HR Rose, and after selling her in 2018, the Harrells have since bought her back with the idea of doing IVF on her to try and
That fear of what can happen at a public auction may stop many, but the Harrells stuck with it through the years. Sandy explained, “There have been times we have pulled a cow for not getting a high enough bid. An auction is an auction and very unpredictable. However, the timing of getting people to come to your place to see your herd is often difficult and getting your name out there doesn’t happen overnight. There were a lot of flops, a lot of time and expense, a lot of getting to know people and what they are looking for, a lot of les
produce another Rosette.
The fact that Rosette was a standout didn’t really show until she was between 2 and 3 years old. That’s when the horn really exploded according to Kent, “HR Rosette was just like any number of colorful Rebel HR daughters when she was weaned. However, as she matured, she began to stand out from many of her weaning mates. She developed a long body, very clean underlines and toplines, a perfect udder, very little leather on her brisket, great bone structure, and of course she kept her beautiful color. Like most Rebel HR offspring, she did not develop a lot of horn when she was young. At 12 ½ months she was 33.25”, at 2 years she was 60 ½” and then she took off. She reached 76” at 3 years and 89 ¼” at four and just under 98” on her 5th birthday. She was 101” 6 months later when we sold her to the Clarks at the Legends Sale. It was her horns that first grabbed everyone’s attention, then when folks looked at her closer, they began to see all her other attributes.”
It cannot be easy to make the decision to sell such a special female, much less take the chance of putting her up at public auction. Kent and Sandy struggled long and hard with it. “There was a lot of soul searching and arm twisting to let her go to public auction. Justin Rombeck is our cattle advisor and he kept insisting she would bring over $200,000. We had already been offered a large amount to sell her private treaty, so the ole “bird in hand” phrase kept going through our minds. We took a big risk taking her to auction. Dean Whitlock also kept insisting she was going to go over $200,000. We respect both of their judgments, but it was very hard to take the chance. When pre-bidding before the auction went to $280,000 we were so relieved, but then worried about her getting sick or injured, her calf being attacked like last year, and then just the stress of getting them to the sale without injury.”
sons learned, before we became the proud sellers of this magnificent animal. The really good auctions try to showcase every animal there and talk about each of their strengths. Not everyone likes the same things. It is an opportunity to meet more people and get your name and reputation out there so that is worth a lot. While Facebook keeps you out there, it doesn’t garner the audience or excitement and competition of a live auction.”
“It depends on the auction, but I believe today with social media, both print and online advertising, videos of animals, and active in person and internet bidding, most top-quality animals will sell for good money,” concurs Kent. “There is no question however, that the premiere sales tend to bring in the top buyers and sell the highest price animals. Unless your ranch is close to an Interstate Highway, well-traveled by many breeders, it is difficult to bring buyers to your ranch for private treaty sales. In our case, I wish we could increase our ranch visits but no matter how many visitors we get, we will still consign to and attend auctions. It raises your profile and showcases your animals to many more people.”
The Harrells biggest desire from selling HR Rosette is that this will raise everyone’s Longhorn program to a higher level. Kent was recently talking to an Angus farmer and when he told the farmer we raised Longhorns, the farmer said “Oh, I’m sorry.” Kent said, “Why do you say that?” The farmer said, “Because they don’t really make any money.” Kent asked what the highest selling cow he had sold was and the farmer replied “$10,000. Kent smiled and said, “I just sold a Longhorn for $700,000.” I’m going to bet that farmer takes a second look at Longhorns.

Many long-time breeders reaped the benefits of the years spent developing their breeding programs this past year at public Longhorn auctions. As newer and established breeders alike seek to give their programs a boost with elite genetics, the proven producers and genetics were in high demand and the bidding wars were more than a little exciting!
You can learn more about the making of our record-setting $700,000 female, HR Rosette on the previous two pages. Her price not only dropped the jaws of the Longhorn industry, it made news nationally as well.

But take a deeper look. Rosette is followed by a $350,00 female followed by three $200K+ females and then six $100K + females...going on to 179 selling for $10K up to $85K...the 2022 market was strong to say the least. The total for all 190 Cash Cows is a staggering $6,357,300 and an overall average of $33,459. Even removing the $700K animal, the average remains just shy of $30,000.
While a large portion of the Cash Cows came from three elite sales –The Longhorn Legacy Sale (42), the Hudson/Valentine Fort Worth Stockyards Longhorn Sale (42), and the Legends Longhorn Sale (37) – many other sales contributed to the list as well, with even a few online only sales producing Cash Cows.

economy that is beset with inflation and trying times due to drought in many parts of the country. We certainly look forward to seeing what 2023 holds for the Longhorn industry.
Keep in mind that this only represents sales at public auction. There are far more animals sold private treaty during the year, and in 2022 there were 9,503 transfers done and 8,662 registrations. Private treaty prices are not public record, but these numbers show a lot of activity beyond the public auction sale ring. 2022 was a good year.

2022 Futurity Money Earners List
“For the Promotion of Longhorns”. That was the simple battle cry that Bill Davidson and Ben Gravett coined in 1999 when they sat in a small restaurant in Bealton, Virginia and penciled out the basic concept of an idea they had on the back of a paper napkin. What became of that conversation has since been a staple in the Longhorn industry for the last 23 years.
A futurity wasn’t a new idea to those two. With both men having decades of experience in showing, judging, and selling horses in the futurity world it only made sense that they could replicate the idea in the Longhorn industry. However, it has very much taken the last 23 years of continued education and continued promotion to keep the futurity idea growing and going. And it has with resound success. There are dozens of futurities from coast to coast, boarder to boarder throughout the year.
As a little boy I got to sit there and watch their dream turn into a reality. I’ve been fortunate to spend my entire adult life being a part of their dream. And since their deaths in 2014 and 2016 I’ve had the chance to try to continue to build on what they’ve created. The futurity concept comes from the very successful concept in the equine world. Let’s not recreate the wheel and let’s find what they have done successfully and try to incorporate it in a way that benefits the Longhorn industry. That lead me to thinking why we didn’t have an official way to track money earned in these futurities.
Where EPDs are important in the cattle world, we don’t follow that trend in the Longhorn world for the most part. We measure cows’ horns. We talk about what they produce. But we don’t put a figure on it. Why didn’t we? So the wheels started to turn.
HOW THE FUTURITY MONEY EARNERS LIST CAME TO BE
When you look at ways to profitize in the Longhorn industry you’re limited to really two ways, both of which are terminal to you. You can either sell your animal or you can kill your animal. That was it. All these thoughts began as the perfect storm started brewing. For years I kept all the data on the futurities that I ran knowing these dollars earned meant something. After years of keeping them, and seeing futurities grow, and seeing money grow in the events it made sense to try to quantify it. After meeting with a few other futurities across the country and asking them if they’d be willing to join in and help me

track this data more than just my own futurities it made sense to make it official. The Futurity Money Earners List was born. We started promoting it we got instant feedback about the value of knowing this information from futurity managers and breeders alike. The concept is simple. The Futurity Money Earners List tracks an animal’s production in the futurity world when it comes to dollars and checks won on their offspring. No matter where an animal falls in a futurity’s payout structure, either it be a check for $1 or a check for $10,000 it’s counted toward that sire and dam’s Futurity Money Earners List in participating futurity. This dollar figure is continued to add up and grow with each check winner that their offspring wins for the rest of their offspring’s’ futurity days.
WHAT’S THE BUCKLE CHASE?
Each year we gather and calculate the participating futurities’ data adding to each sire, dam, and exhibitor for their lifetime earnings. We wanted to make it something worth watching during the course of the year. So we decided on a Buckle Chase with five categories including Bull of the Year based off of the most dollars won, the Cow of the Year based off of the most dollars won, the Exhibitor of the Year based off of most dollars won, and the Producer of the Year for bulls and cows based off of most checks won. Now the question arises “Isn’t the Bull or Cow of the Year and Producer of the Year the same thing?” No at all. We didn’t want this concept to award only the big time animals who might go to a few high paying futurities without recognizing the animals that consistently producer check winners across the board. In 2021 the animals winning the dollars and the animals winning the checks were the same. But in 2022 they were completely different. Now why is that ideal? It shows that there is no single path to winning. It’s a combination of certain animals clicking and achieving your goals.
SO WHAT’S THE VALUE IN KNOWING THESE NUMBERS?
So why are these numbers in particular important to know? First, any opportunity for you as a breeder to have more talking points about your animals gives you more opportunity to connect with a potentional buyer. Remember, “for the promotion of Longhorns.” For folks who are looking for alternative ways to profitize on their cattle without the terminal aspect of it can now include the production aspect in their sales pitch. Instead of saying “He/she produced X” offspring” you now have the options to say “He/she has produced $40,000 in winners.” And the crazy part is that number is only going to go up! Second, as a breeder it allows you more data points to analyze your future direction. Consistency is key and for an animal to consistency producer futurity check winners is something to look at.
This has grown bigger than I’ve ever imagined. With exactly 1782 checks and over $697,000 accounted towards these producers in two years, plus a few other futurities that were run in the years prior to the Futurity Money Earner’s List founding in 2020 this idea blew up and money has certainly increased. For reference, the first year of the Buckle Chase in 2021 where participating futurities were able to add their winnings adding to the overall Futurity Money Earner’s production and give the futurity itself an opportunity to attract more participation from folks looking to hopefully add dollars to their breeding programs’ finished the year with just over $182,000 and 569 checks compared to the 2022 Buckle Chase which recorded over $311,000 and 752 checks. It continues to build. What will it be in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? Will we be doing over a million dollars a year? We could be looking back at these numbers which seem incredible now and think “it was a good place to start.”
It’s going to be exciting to see where this ends up in the next decade and what becomes of these lines and their production. I wish we had the data for the last 23 years as it would be incredible to build pedigrees out generations deep and see what consistency there is amongst that. That’s the next step.
SO WHERE DOES IT GO FROM HERE?
In just two years the futurity world has seen a huge increase in numbers. What went from awarding a few hundred bucks and some very cool guns has grown into checks written for a few thousand dollar and trailers, chutes, and more. The excitement is there and it’s only going to grow if we can stay ahead of the curve as an industry. Rising tides lift all ships and if each year progressively gets better, if each event progressively out does what it does the previous year, it’s only going to grow in leaps and bounds. So where does this go? The participating futurities are only going to increase. It brings value to a futurity to be a part of the Futurity Money Earner’s List as breeders continue to build up their program and its value. The yearly dollar values are going to increase and the number of checks issues are going to increase. What gets measured gets made. There is now a platform to put dollars to production from a third party.
The best part about this is it costs the futurity participants NOTHING to be a part of the Futurity Money Earner’s List. Participating futurities pay into it every year with a minimum cost, typically less than the cost of a single entry, with the value of gaining more participation by breeders who want a chance to win money for their entries’ sires and dams. If you manage a futurity or wish for your participating futurities to be a part of the year’s Buckle Chase please contact me, Bear Davidson at 540-687-0050 or beardavidson@ymail.com.

Texas Longhorn Breed Promoted on RFD-TV and Rural Radio
The TLBAA Marketing committee is excited to announce that an agreement was reached and ads for the Texas Longhorn breed and the Association began airing on RFD-TV and The Cowboy Channel on October 10, 2022 and are running over the course of a year.
According to Tim Moan, CEO RFD-TV/VP of Sales Cowboy Channel, the campaign is estimated to deliver over 6,250,000 household impressions over the course of that year.
In addition to the general commercial, there was also radio promotion of the TLBAA Horn Showcase and TV promotion of the Eddie Wood Cowtown Classic Sale.
The exciting thing is the spots run during some popular shows and time spots ranging from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Some individual stats that stand out per Moan:
• Market Day Report – 30,000 household average viewers each time the ad runs
• Texas Ag Matters – 24,0000
• Hayden Outdoors – 19,000
• Red Steagal – 19,000
• Texas Country Reporter – 50,000
Moan says the bonus spots on The Cowboy Channel and Rural Radio will add another 6,000,000 impressions, giving the Texas Longhorn breed an amazing amount of exposure to a broad audience.
The 30 second spot extolls the merits past, present and future of this great breed and promotes the www.tlbaa.org website for people to find more information. It is impressive onscreen and will certainly catch the attention of viewers and spark interest in the breed.

TLBAA Beef Committee Introduces 2023 Members
ANDREW SHAGOURY Chairman
I’m Andrew Shagoury, I live in North Carolina with my wife Meghan, and our two young children. I am the manager for Hidden Springs Ranch. I firmly believe that a beef program is important, not just for the health of a herd, but the health of the breed as a whole. Living in the middle of angus country, we stand out. We’re often met with skepticism, until they try our product! We have found great success with our farmers market and local AG programs. Not only do we get to introduce folks to a tasty, locally raised product, but we get to chat about longhorn history and all their benefits as well! All in all, I’m excited to be apart of this industry and do my part to help. Feel free to contact me anytime (andrew@hslonghorns.com) if you want to talk longhorns, beef, etc. I’m happy to chat and exchange experiences!
PHIL NORWOOD
Phil Norwood, from Central Texas.
Has been selling longhorn beef for two years, utilizing local markets and selling on consignment.
“This started as a way for to cull females who weren’t as productive as they should be. Fertility (calving interval) and temperament are my primary herd management tools.”
GORDON MUSGROVE
I have been in the Beef Cattle Industry all my life. We have been raising Registered Longhorn Cattle for the last 15 years. Our focus has been on Straight Red colored Longhorn Bulls and selling them to Commercial Producers as well as Longhorn Breeders. Our cull animals we put through our beef program.
Our beef is processed, packaged, and labelled at Provincially inspected Abattoirs. We retail our beef off the farm as well as at 2 stores and to a few restaurants.
We are finding high quality beef is becoming more popular.
JEREMY KRONZ
I’m Jeremy Kronz, 33 year old father of 3 from a little town of Sewickley Pennsylvania 15 minutes from the city of Pittsburgh.
I got into the longhorn/beef industry in 2016 when I bought 2 cows and a steer from Dickinson cattle company. We went from butcher 1 a year in 2017 to close to 80 this year in 2022. We work closely with Purina to have the right nutritional program for our breeding herd and grass fed and finished steers. I feel it is important to help other breeders or anyone who wants to get into the longhorn beef and educate everyone on the health benefits of longhorn beef.
CHARLENE NANCE
Charlene served as previous chair to the beef committee and was responsible for reviving the TLBAA Beef Committee in 2018 aand taking it in new directions, most notably kicking off a successful Facebook ad campaign that drew in leads and brought new interest to the product. Charlene has been marketing Longhorn beef for many years and is a strong advocate for the product and the cattle.

Hannah & Asa Steiner
1. How did you get started in the Texas Longhorn business?
We started with a small number of Angus. One day, Asa saw some longhorns for sale on Craigslist and thought “Hey this might be cool.” Needless to say, we were hooked from there. We sold all our Angus and started solely focusing on Longhorns.
2. What are a few highlights of your current Texas Longhorn program?
We do not have the resources to keep a large herd of cattle at this point. So, we are trying to focus on quality over quantity. Slowly, we are selling off cows and replacing them with more impressive pedigrees, genetics, etc. The goal is to slowly climb the ladder of quality. Most recently, we acquired a flashy pair with pedigrees including FiftyFifty BCB and Cut’N Dried. We are really excited to see what these two do for our program.
3. What are your future goals for your Texas Longhorn program?
We hope to save up some money to start buying at least one really high dollar cow a year to introduce into our program. Doing so, we hope to have a small herd of knock-out cows. The goal would be to A.I. those girls to genetically proven bulls each year to produce some great calves.

Three Longhorn Judges Result In Two New Steers for The Fort Worth Herd
Fort Worth, TX - On a hot summer Texas afternoon - three cattle women judged the 35th Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America World Expo Trophy Steer Show.
They were encumbered with the “enviable and difficult task of deciding on the top Trophy steer,” said TLBAA Trails Magazine. “Placing trophy steers on color, conformation and horn.”
While they were preparing to judge the show by saddling up horses the trio discussed their passion for the Texas longhorn bred.
From there it is history. The women are Amber Dunmire, ranch manager of Bonnie Glen Farm located in Coshoton, OH; Ashlee Miller, owner at Cow Creek Ranch of Coleman, TX and Fort Worth Herd’s trail boss Kristin Jaworski, of the world’s only twice-daily cattle drive.
“Putting this judging panel together was a great fit,” said Jaworski “It was meant to be.”
On occasion the Fort Worth Herd rotates and retires the steers of the cattle drive. Knowing the Herd would have a couple of openings, Jaworski informed the ladies of the donation process.
After their judging - Dunmire, Miller and Jaworksi went to work to have two new steers donated to the Fort Worth Herd. Dunmire would end up donating Honcho and Miller’s daughter Braylin donated Cowboy Houdini.
“This is the success of networking within the Texas Longhorn breeders,” said Jaworski who attributes the success to TLBAA World Show committee members; Steven Head and Kevin Rooker, both former Fort Worth Herd steer donors along with newly appointed Friends of the Fort Worth Herd Board Member, Ryan Culpepper.
Dunmire donated the steer Honcho 212, a flashy brindle lineback and sweet, mild mannered personal-
ity. Miller donated the steer Cowboy Houdini, a large blue roan who is very curious.
Honcho’s Life story:
Striking in the pasture and in the Fort Worth Stockyards, Honcho grew up as a haltered show steer and lived the past few years in Ohio. He was born on May 26, 2014 and currently measures 95 inches tip-totip with rolling horns.
Honcho enjoys taking naps in the sun and munching on a round bale of hay, along with being the center of photos. When he was younger he won many championship awards and buckles.
Honcho’s famous sire (father) WS Jamakizm known for his brindle color and lengthy horns.
Houdini’s Life story:
As his name suggests he might be a bit of an escape artist or was during his halter breaking and show career as he would work magic to remove his halter. He can carefully place his back foot on the top of the back of his head and run a toe under the rope and work to remove it from his head.
He was born September 25, 2016 with black ears, blue roan speckles and white highlights quickly crowned him one of the most handsome little calves on the Cow Creek Ranch.
Cowboy Houdini’s pedigree traces back to all seven Texas longhorn foundation herds; Butler, Marks, Peeler, Phillips, Wright, Wichita Refuge and Yates. His sire, PLR Deacon, is a multi-time champion and his dam, Bayou Wind, is one of the favorite friendly cows at the old ranch, and she is a champion producer herself.
Come meet Honcho and Houdini at the Fort Worth Herd’s twice daily cattle drive at 11:30 am and 4 pm everyday. Also make sure to follow along social platforms @fortworthherd for updates.

Dear TLBT Members,
Message
Happy New Year! With the New Year, typically come, New Year resolutions – we often hear adults talk about making an effort to work out more or eat healthier or working to lose 10lbs. As youth, some of those typical New Year resolutions don’t really apply to us – we are already active daily, taking care of our animals or playing sports in school, we are still growing, so don’t need to worry about those 10lbs, but I am sure there is something each of us kind find to help improve ourselves and who we are.
I’ve thought long and hard on what mine is for this year and would like to ask y’all to do the same. Maybe it’s to help Mom with the dishes more often or to keep your room clean daily (not just when your parents tell you to). Maybe it is to eat healthier or be more active. Maybe it’s to be kinder to your little sister or to be a better friend to the new kid at school. Pick one thing and strive to improve yourself daily and you’ll see it can make a difference, not only in your live, but the lives of those around you as well.
Hope to see y’all at our next general membership meeting at the FWSSR later this month!
Sincerely,
RULE HIGHLIGHT
Unmanageable Animals: All show entries are expected to be manageable. Should an animal become unmanageable, the show management shall have the right and responsibility to remove such animal from competition, and all entry and stalling fees shall be forfeited

1.) Why did you join TLBT? Before I was old enough to show on my own, I was spending time at shows with older TLBT kids showing cattle and I liked being around Longhorn people. We always had fun at the shows so I knew that was something I wanted to do when I was old enough. I love showing. I want to support the TLBT and teach others about Longhorns.
2.) What is your favorite Longhorn show and why? My favorite show is at Miracle Farm in Brenham. It was the place where I won a steer, Rowdy, donated by Dr. Lou Shields. He and I won some nice prizes together. They used to have a big dirt pile that I liked to play on with other kids. They also have the BEST trees to climb and a wooded area that’s fun to explore.
3.) What is your favorite Longhorn color and pattern? My favorite color and pattern is brindle.
4.) Where did you earn your first reward? What type of award?
I won my first award at the West Texas Show in Abilene. I won Champion Junior Steer with RedStar Chill Wills.
5.) What is your funniest TLBT moment? My funniest TLBT moment is when I was waiting in the make ready at Fort Worth. All the cows around us were just mooing like crazy. My Dad and I counted down 3, 2, 1 and then Dad, me and my steer, Chill, all mooed at the same time. It surprised us that Chill mooed with us.
6.) Do you enjoy showing Longhorns? Why? I enjoy showing Longhorns because I think the breed is very pretty and fun to look at. I also like how everyone in the community is nice to each other.
7.) What has been your biggest influence while showing Longhorns?
Some of the people who were an influence on me when we started showing are the FFA kids that we first traveled withGabby, Coleman and Rylee.

8.) What have you learned while you have been showing Longhorns that has helped you grow as a person? Showing Longhorns has helped me to become more responsible. Caring for another living being will do that.
9.) What is the best part about being a TLBT? The best part of being in the TLBT has helped me to meet new people and make friends. I like that I can make an impact on others and teach them about the Longhorn breed.
10.) What is your favorite quote? My favorite quote is “Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it”
11.) What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Chocolate and cotton candy

Dr. William “Bill” Dean Clark
February 1, 1936 – December 10, 2022
Dr. William Dean Clark (Bill) was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma February 1, 1936 to Verlon and Susie Clark. Although he resided most of his life in Texas, he remained a proud Oklahoman who never forgot his heritage even as he embraced the culture of his adopted state. He was raised with one brother and two sisters. He was married one time to, Shirley Reid Clark, who was a beloved partner and preceded him in death. He had two boys, two daughters in law, two grandchildren and five great grandchildren who lovingly knew him as GPa. He loved his family and all of them cherished him with hearts full of love. He was also a proud member of Bonita United Methodist Church and veteran of the U.S. Army rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Dr. Clark achieved a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Texas in 1968 and taught at Stephen F. Austin State University for over 50 years. He enjoyed a distinguished career that included a number of honors and awards including Teaching Excellence award for College of Science and Mathematics, Distinguished Professor Award and was a Fellow of the Texas Academy of Science. He was a published author of numerous mathematic workbooks that were co-authored by his friend and colleague, Dr. Sandra McCune, and was recognized as a Professor Emeritus upon his retirement at the age of 84. He would always say his greatest gifts were the many students that passed through his classes over the years and that aiding them in their life pursuits was his finest professional accomplishment.
Dr. Clark lived in Nacogdoches for 56 years and grew to love the town, the culture and the many friendships developed over the years. He was a cattleman who served as President of The Texas Longhorn Breeders Association. He loved SFA, Universities of Oklahoma and Texas sports along with Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves baseball and Dallas Cowboys football. Music and the arts were an important part of his life and he enjoyed playing the guitar and performing, on occasion, as a player at the Lamp-lite Playhouse. He enjoyed a friendship with each member of the East Texas String Ensemble, even sitting in with them from time to time. It would be impossible to name all of his friends, but he was so thankful for all of them as they helped weave the fabric of his life. So many came to see him in his last days none more so than Bill Long who was faithful in his daily visits. The Family is grateful to all and to the wonderful nurses and doctors who cared for him throughout his final months.
Dr. Clark was a charter member of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and his service is briefly described by his friend, former law enforcement official and County Judge, Greg Sowell, below:
Bill graduated from the Nacogdoches Citizens Police Academy in 2001. He was a long-time member of the CPA Alumni Association of the Nacogdoches Police Department. In 2007, the police department formed the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which is the volunteer assistance force of the NPD. Bill was a charter member of this force, being named an original Lieutenant/Squad Leader. He volunteered many hours to the Nacogdoches Police Department in both support and emergency operations. He served in this capacity until this year, when he “retired” due to health concerns. He was a tireless supporter of law enforcement and the Nacogdoches Police Department.
Dr. Clark was the founding father of a yearly tradition, The Flotilla, that has survived for 50+ years and one of his close friends, Roy Joe Harris, wrote a brief commemorative below:
Some fifty plus years ago, a handful of friends from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Stephen F. Austin State University, started a tradition called Flotilla. Flotilla is formally defined as a camping trip to a lake of the group’s choosing that started the weekend after the week of final exams in the spring semester. Flotilla is more loosely defined as what a bunch of seventh grade boys would do if they were of legal drinking age and had beer money. Dr. Clark was not only a founding father of this event, he was the captain. Flotilla officially started (…and starts, because Flotilla continues to this day) when Dr. Clark’s green Toyota showed up with the official Flotilla gear and Flotilla officially ended when Dr. Clark’s green Toyota left with mentioned gear. In between the arrival and departure of that green pickup you could count on hundreds of hands of poker being dealt, an unending recounting of escapades of Flotillas past, gobs of good food and drink, and the “Rose Ceremony.” The Rose Ceremony is as close to serious
44 | January 2023 TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS
In MeMorIaM
as Flotilla gets. This ceremony, over which Captain Clark presided, is that time during Flotilla when all of those present gather around to remember those fallen members of Flotilla. For each gorilla of Flotilla no longer with us, Captain Clark would give a brief history of this man, tell a story worthy of Flotilla memory, lead us in a toast to our fallen comrade, and throw a flower in the lake in remembrance. Many of us envisioned the day when the toughest of us all, Captain Clark aka Silverback, would lead a Rose Ceremony where only he would be in attendance. Like so many who are reading this, words cannot capture how much Captain Clark has meant to so many nor can words capture the legacy he created.
Dr. Clark is survived by his children, Doug and his wife, Lynn, of Nacogdoches; Darryl and his wife, Shari, of Pueblo West, Colorado; Grandchildren, Amber and her partner, Je Thomas, of Westcli e, Colorado and Bill and his wife, Jade, of Auburn, Georgia and five great grandchildren, Will, Lilly, Sunny, Rose and Callie of Auburn, Georgia as well as his brother, Gale and wife, Vangie, of Georgetown, Texas and sisters, Barbara Clark of San Diego, California and Connie and her husband Phil Foster of Vian, Oklahoma along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Shirley, whom he considered a perfect partner and companion.
As was his way, he wouldn’t want the living to despair for him. He lived a full life and fought the good fight.
A visitation was held Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors. A funeral service was held Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at First United Methodist Church in Nacogdoches o ciated by Pastor Brad McKenzie.
Bill was laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Park.
Serving as pallbearers were Roy Joe Harris, Keith Hubbard, Bill Long, Greg Miller, Ray Morris, and Greg Sowell. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Alston, Bobby Boudria, and Jack Gri n.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Clark’s name to Bonita United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 632701, Nacogdoches, Texas 75963 or to the Stephen F. Austin State University William D. Clark Scholarship, P.O. Box 6092, SFA Station, Nacogdoches, Texas 75962.
Arrangements were under the direction of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors.

AFFILIATE UPDATES
WOW, buckle up!
It has been an excitingly busy month for the East Texas Longhorn Association! We recently held our annual World Qualifying Show which benefits the Kaufman Police Association as well as our own ETLA Youth Scholarship Program. Texas Longhorn breeders showed up and showed out with a record number of entries. Thanks to Joel Norris and his crew of volunteers for putting on such an awesome event. We would like to thank everyone who donated and purchased items for our Silent Auction. That is always a popular way for our members to compete and still raise money for our youth. We had an amazing heifer calf donated by ETLA members Heather and Christopher Fischer of Triple F Ranch. Our youth were able to sell ra e tickets to benefit our Youth Scholarship Fund and Sonni Anderson of Tomball, TX was our winner. Sonni has been as giddy as a schoolgirl at prom since winning and this is her first ever Texas Longhorn. Mrs. Anderson bought her ticket from Alissa Butler who will be doing the halter break work for her, and we are excited about this new relationship. Thank you, Triple F Ranch, for making this possible for our youth and a special thank you also to all members and non-members who bought tickets. Our 50-50 ra e was a great success and was won by Curtis Abel of Abel Longhorns. Curtis won the pot of money and donated his entire winnings back to the ETLA Youth Scholarship Fund. How awesome is that! Thank you, Curtis, for your generosity! As you can see, this year’s KPA Show was successful and fun. Plans are in the works for an even better event for next year. Hope to see you there!
KEITH DUBOSE PRESIDENT KWDUBOSE@GMAIL.COM

On November 28th, 45 head of registered Texas Longhorns were presented to judge Carla Payne from Slidell, Texas during the Canadian National Show at Agribition.
Eight breeders from three provinces helped the Canadian Texas Longhorn Association host a successful show. The champion yearling heifer was owned by Kari Rogenski of Patricia, Alberta and received a beautiful buckle sponsored by Trouw Nutrition. Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Female were owned by the Double D Arena at Outlook.

The Grand Champion Bull and Reserve Grand Champion Bull were also owned by the Double D Arena at Outlook. It was of interest to note that the Reserve Grand Female and Reserve Grand Bull were both progeny of the Grand Champion Female.
Double D also took Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor for the show. The donated trophy for the Mature Female, from the Australian Longhorn Association, was presented to the Grand Champion Female and we were lucky enough to actually have an Australian visitor step up to present the trophy. Herdsman Award for 2022 went to Daryl Swark of Carmen, Manitoba.
This is the first year that the Texas Longhorns have had a live display throughout the week at Agribition and entertained many questions about the breed, lots of interest this year. CTLA President Pete Hildebrand and his wife Leann, were the display managers with Daryl Swark helping out as well. A big thank you to them for all their time and work making the display a success. A successful event to end the year for the CTLA.
Thank you to our many sponsors who continue to support this event each year, and to our judge Carla Payne who made the very long trek to Saskatchewan.

Cooke County Junior Livestock Show Allows Longhorns for First Time
As new TLBAA breeders we were seeking a way to bridge the gap between breeder events and youth events. We really wanted our son to be able to engage with the Longhorns in a way that would be meaningful to him. We knew he would love the opportunity to show his own cattle and promote the breed in a youthful way. At that time, we decided to give the youth shows a spin.
We found out as much as we could about our local county show and it was then we learned they didn’t allow Longhorns and had never had Longhorns in a youth show. We knew at that moment we had to show up, horns up! Through our local FFA Chapter in Muenster we were able to present to the board our desire to bring Texas Longhorns to the Cooke County Jr Livestock show. And, they approved it.
We accepted the perimeters they set forth as a challenge…it meant the world to us to get this chance and

we knew we had to get it right! We collected a few athletes from our son’s school and started at square one. We asked questions of everyone and learned everything we could about showing Longhorns.
The overall experience has been more meaningful than we could have expected. The boys have worked in hot show barns, and cold show barns, been drug through the mud quit literally and haven’t shown anything but character and sportsmanship.
We didn’t realize we were making memories we just thought we were having fun.
For the first time EVER Texas Longhorns will show in the Cooke County Jr. Livestock show on January 4, 2023 and we are so proud to have our cattle representing our breed.
