EDITOR’S NOTES

IT’S A GREAT DAY TO BE ALIVE

Artificial Insemination (A.I.) is not a new thing in the Longhorn Industry. Through the years, it has not only gained popularity but has also become more affordable as an option for either avoiding bull ownership or to quickly and more increase the gene pool quality of your herd.

Those who paved the way before A.I. was a viable option had to either pay high dollar for a proven bull or choose a bull that might be good for the majority of the herd, but just doesn’t cross well with them all. Just imagine the stress of waiting for the calf crop to hit the ground and the disappointment when your best females were only putting out mediocre results.

Now, however, you can study your herd and either choose a few select females that you want to hand select the best bull(s) for while leaving the rest to your herd sire or you could even pick different sires for different groups, thus seeing results from multiple genetic crosses in one year’s calf crop. I think everyone enjoys finding a quicker way to create a herd that is producing the animals they desire, and hopefully others in the industry desire as well.

The reference section of this issue can be used in many ways. You can window shop for genetics, you may just need to find a registration or A.I. number to fill out your A.I. or E.T. certificates correctly, or you might like to take a look at a bull from the past whose name you keep hearing referenced frequently. However you use it, keep it on hand. There are also a lot of up and coming sires being advertised this month that are either in process of being certified or may be in the near future.

There is one important thing as a breeder you need to be aware of. If you collect a bull for in-herd use, you can only register calves born from females you own using semen from a bull you own. If you sell semen on a bull that is not A.I. Certified, TLBAA cannot register the offspring. If you are buying semen either check this reference, look them up in HORNS, or check for an ITLA AI certification number before purchasing to ensure your calves may be registered.

For bull owners, do not hurt your buyers by selling semen from noncertified bulls. If you want to share your bulls genetics with others it will have to be through pasture breeding if you choose not to go through the A.I. Certification process.

You can find forms and more information on registrations and A.I. Certification on our website, www.tlbaa.org.

Stay tuned to see more great bulls in the September issue’s Bull Alley foldout section!

Blessings!

Factors Affecting Semen Quality in A.I. Programs

The quantity and quality of semen produced by bulls used in AI programs can be affected by the bulls’ environment, management, health, and genetics. Storage conditions can also be a factor after the semen is collected.

The wide use of AI in cattle has been made possible by development of methods to ensure sperm cell viability after storage for long periods. These methods usually consist of reducing sperm metabolism, using cryoprotectants—substances to protect tissues from freeze damage.

The success of an AI program largely depends on good quality semen. Only highly fertile bulls should be used, making sure their semen remains viable through the freezing process—since some bulls’ semen goes through the freeze better than others.

Individual bulls may differ in ability to fertilize eggs or to develop to blastocyst stages after in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures to create embryos for embryo transfer. Different sires and/or batches of semen may

differ in their individual response to in vitro processes.

Removing stored semen from the tank should occur quickly and efficiently. A frost line occurs around -103 and -106°C (-153 and 159 F). As the canister moves up the neck of the tank, the temperature changes. When semen is held above the frost line, a decrease in fertility can occur; slight warming can cause sperm cells to die. If the desired straw cannot be located within 7-10 seconds of lifting the canister, the canister should be placed back into the liquid nitrogen for 10-15 seconds before again attempting to remove the straw of semen. To assist in locating a straw of semen from a canister, tweezers or forceps should be used. Avoid using fingers to grab a straw of semen; the heat of a person’s hands can cause the straw to begin to thaw and decrease the fertility of the semen. Semen is a delicate biological product, and all temperature fluctuations will decrease semen quality to some degree.

Semen handling (and/or semen thawing protocol) can be an important factor influencing semen quality

and AI conception results. People who are breeding more than one cow (such as in estrus synchronization programs with timed AI) usually thaw multiple semen straws at a time. Ideally a single frozen semen straw is thawed in a water bath unit at a temperature of 35 to 37°C (95 to 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) for at least 30 seconds, but in herds using timed-AI protocols, it’s a routine practice to thaw multiple straws simultaneously in the same waterbath unit to increase the convenience of semen handling and the number of inseminations in a short period.

However, under these conditions, some straws remain in the thawing bath longer and this could have some influence in sperm viability and fertility. Several studies have shown that semen straws must be agitated immediately after insertion into the water bath--to prevent direct contact among semen doses and refreezing during the thaw process. By making sure the straws stay separate, one study showed that the simultaneous thawing of multiple straws had no adverse effect on percentage of motile sperm when up to ten semen straws were simultaneously thawed in a thermostatically controlled thawing bath of 36°C (96.8 F).

SIMPLE STEPS TO REMEMBER WHEN INSEMINATING

To begin thawing semen, the desired straw must be located and removed from the tank using tweezers or forceps, keeping the canister below the frost line. Once the straw of semen has been located and secured, the straw should be placed immediately into a water bath containing 95-98°F water. Some companies produce straws of semen that can be pocket thawed, but this is still inferior to thawing in a water bath at the correct temperatures.

Experienced AI technicians can simultaneously thaw multiple straws, inseminating up to four cows within a 20 minute interval, without adverse effects on fertility. If the recommended semen handling procedures are followed, more than two straws can be thawed at once without compromising semen fertility.

The most important issues regarding semen handling are timing, temperature, proper hygiene and inseminator proficiency. Technicians that fail to abide by standard recommendations often have less than optimal conception rates regardless of the number of straws thawed.

The standard recommendations for frozen bovine semen are to first thaw no more straws than can be deposited in the female within 15 minutes between thawing and insemination, using a water-bath at 35°C (95 F) for 45 seconds, and always maintaining a stable temperature during this interval. Second, it’s important to prevent direct straw-to-straw contact during the thaw process, and third, appropriate

The straw of semen should be placed in the water bath for a minimum of 30 seconds and no longer than 15 minutes. The number of straws thawed at one time should not exceed four, as water temperature will begin to decrease and this will also decrease semen fertility. Thaw only the number of straws that can successfully be inseminated within a 15-minute period (from the time it went into the water bath until it is deposited into the uterus of the cow).

After thawing, dry the straw of semen completely, check identification on the straw to make sure the correct bull is being used, cut the top of the straw opposite of the cotton plug, and load it into an insemination gun. Once the gun is loaded, protect the gun from cold environments. This can be accomplished by placing the gun next to your body or utilizing a gun warmer to maintain constant temperature. Any rapid changes or contaminants can compromise the quality of the semen in a straw, including excess heat or cold, direct sunlight, sweat, blood, water, urine and manure. Correct insemination technique is crucial when depositing the semen. Deposit semen beyond the cervix and before the branching off of the uterine horns.

thermal and hygienic protection procedures must be utilized to maintain stable temperature and cleanliness during gun assembly and transport to the cow.

A breeding shed should be used if possible; the AI

procedure should be done in a covered and protected area.

Semen fertility of some sires appear seems to be more negatively affected by temperature changes than others. The number of straws that can be simultaneously thawed without compromising semen fertility seems to vary for each bull. To avoid possible problems, it seems best to not exceed six semen straws for simultaneous thawing—to minimize possibility of lower conception rates associated with the effects of higher ambient temperatures and/or sun exposure.

-112° F

tank on a wooden pallet or thick cardboard.

Liquid nitrogen evaporates over time. The rate of evaporation of liquid nitrogen depends on tank construction and size. Check nitrogen level regularly. This can be accomplished using a yard stick or even a piece of rebar. Refilling should occur when there is approximately 4 cm (1.6 inches) of nitrogen left. If no evaporation is seen when pulling out the plug, this is an indication that the tank has gone dry.

The critical temperature is approximately -112 degrees.
Semen exposed to temperatures warmer than -112° F (even for a short time) may be less viable.

Semen used for artificial insemination is sensitive to environmental factors, so storage conditions can significantly affect quality. Common tips for storing semen include temperature; semen should be kept at temperatures below minus 80°C (-112°F) to preserve quality. Frozen semen can be stored indefinitely if kept at this temperature. The critical temperature is approximately -112 degrees. Semen exposed to temperatures warmer than -112° F (even for a short time) may be less viable.

Liquid nitrogen is around -320°F. If semen is stored in a liquid nitrogen tank, keep it in a cool, clean, dry, dust-free, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing the tank directly on concrete; acids in the concrete can corrode the bottom. Elevate the

For short-term storage, some studies have found that short-term cooling of semen after collection can improve conception rates, but rapidly cooling freshly ejaculated sperm from body temperature to below 15°C (60 F) can cause sperm viability to decrease. Shortterm storage may influence the final quality and reproductive efficiency of semen when refrigerated or frozen. Studies of bull semen obtained at AI centers have shown that short-term cooling of bull semen after collection (instead of freezethawing) using an egg-yolk based extender increased the conception rate.

Semen preservation strategies include adding metabolic buffers (EDTA, HEPES, potassium chloride, sodium citrate, sodium bicarbonate, etc.), nutrients (glucose, fructose, etc.), or protective substances (bovine serum albumin, egg yolk, lecithin, milk, etc.), and inhibiting bacterial growth by adding antibiotics. When freshly ejaculated sperm are rapidly cooled from body temperature to temperatures below 15 °C (60 F), the cold shock results in varying degrees of loss of sperm viability especially if cooling continues very rapidly to 1–2 °C (33 to 35 F).

Without proper storage and handling at all stages, sperm cells can die rapidly and compromise success. Proper equipment is essential. Equipment includes a nitrogen tank (personal tank or a shipper tank), AI gun(s), plastic sheaths that match your chosen AI gun, OB shoulder-length gloves, straw cutter (scissors), water bath, stop-watch, tweezers, paper towels and non-spermicidal lubrication. Artificial insemination box kits can be purchased, but a plastic or stainless steel toolbox works to organize and protect the equipment and keep it clean and dry. When cleaning equipment, use a 70% isopropyl alcohol, disinfectants and/or soap. Always thoroughly rinse with water; disinfectants coming in contact with a straw of semen can be lethal to the spermatozoa.

Setting up A.I. and E.T. Programs

In today’s cattle industry there are some breeders buying cattle for the first time and wanting to learn all they can about artificial insemination (A.I.) and embryo transplants (E.T.), and others who have raised cattle for many years but have never used A.I. or E.T. and want to learn how. AI has been utilized in cattle since the 1940’s (with many improvements since those early days) and embryo transfers—from a donor cow to a recipient cow that serves as a surrogate mother to carry that pregnancy and raise the calf—have been a part of bovine reproduction options now for more than 50 years.

arrel DeGrofft, DVM, an embryologist in Loveland, Colorado (Colorado Genetics, Inc.) says the first embryo transfer (ET) calf was born in 1951. “ET has been used commercially since the early 1970’s, with embryo freezing technology coming into practice during the 1980’s. The use of ET has several benefits, as it allows a breeder to more rapidly gain genetic quality in a herd. We can collect multiple embryos from a superior purebred cow, several times during the year, and greatly increase the number of offspring from that cow,” he says.

This is a way to more quickly multiply the best genetics in the herd, creating more replacement females or embryos to sell. As long as the donor cow is a good embryo producing individual, a person can collect a lot of embryos within a few years.

“When breeding donor cows, a person can use a different sire for each ET procedure, if desired, to get var-

ied genetics either to sell or to keep. You should select donor cows of superior genetic quality, and selecting a mating that will have economic worth. Sale of embryos is common today. We have clients who frequently buy frozen embryos from other people, and we transfer those into their recipient cows,” he says.

“I started working with ET in 1973. Many things have changed in this industry but some things are still valuable today. One of the important is nutrition,” he says.

NUTRITION AND MANAGEMENT OF DONOR AND RECIPIENT COWS

“Adequate energy, protein, minerals, etc. are crucial for these cows. We like to see donor cows and recipient cows in a body condition score about 5.5 to 6. We don’t want the donor too fat. If donor cows get to body condition score 6.5 or higher, we see a decrease in viable embryos that can be collected from them,” DeGrofft says.

“There is research to show why fat cows tend to have reproductive problems. If cows get too fat they have hormonal problems, metabolic problems, and a decrease in reproduction (whether with AI, ET or bull bred).”

Recipient selection and management is much the same as for donor cows. “We like to use early calvers that are at least 65 to 70 days post-partum before we consider using them as recipients. We prefer middle aged cows with good dispositions. You’ll have to put those cows through the chute to prepare them to receive an embryo, and won’t want cattle that are difficult to handle. When they calve, they good dispositions, making it much easier to handle the calf, ear tag it, etc.” he says.

The heifers need to be on the same nutritional level for 30 to 40 days to help maintain early pregnancy.”

It is important to test feed and water, to balance the ration properly for minerals, protein and energy. “We find areas from ranch to ranch (and they may not be far apart) that are too high in selenium or the rancher maybe be feeding something that’s high in nitrates, or the water may be high in molybdenum which ties up copper. Even when people buy the same mineral ration their neighbor does, it may not be the right balance for their own soils and feed,” he explains.

“We have a consulting nutritionist who has worked with us for many years and we use his expertise when evaluating rations from information each client provides. Over the years, we’ve found tremendous variability as we travel to do ET work, and big differences in some locations. If they don’t test the feed and water, they won’t know what they need,” he says.

The recipient cow should be reproductively sound, with good calving record. “We don’t try to use a cow that’s been open for a couple of years. We also want these cows to have adequate milking ability, and we try to keep the nutrition the same as the donor cow before we transfer the embryos. We also use Multimin 90, the injectable trace mineral product, for all our donors and recipients, along with the mineral ration the rancher is currently using. There is data to show that this can result in an increase in embryo quality and pregnancy rate,” says DeGrofft.

The recipients need an adequate diet. “We tell our clients that they need to maintain a similar nutrition program after the embryos are transferred (or the AI breeding) for about 30 to 40 days, if possible, to maintain pregnancies. This can decrease the possibility of early embryonic losses. Research has substantiated this, and we have seen this personally. One of my biggest fears is when heifers have gone through an AI program in a feedlot and a few days later are turned out on a little green grass in April that is low in nutrition. We know they will suffer some pregnancy loss.

“People need an adequate identification system for recipient cows. Sometimes we run into some that don’t even have an ear tag. We suggest they have two ear tags, one that they can identify when the embryos are being transferred, and another tag identifying the mating. It is important to have at least two forms of ID and some people even write down the number of a metal tag they might have in the ear, like a brucellosis tag, or any metal clip tag, using it as a back-up form of ID in case the recipient cow loses both ear tags,” he says. That way there’s no question about the genetics of the resulting calf.

PREGNANCIES

When collecting embryos from a donor cow, the average number is 6 to 6.5 embryos per flush on a cow, and about 3 or 4 on a virgin heifer. “Statistics indicate that about 70% of embryos collected are from about one-third of the donor cows. Some donor cows produce embryos very well and some do not. The owner must decide how long to continue working with a cow without acceptable results, or just put her back in the herd and let her raise just one calf each year, and select another individual to use as a donor,” he says.

“People also ask about pregnancy rates. Over the past 40 years, the factor that most affects pregnancy rate is quality and management of the recipient cows. The donor cows are usually looked after very well and the embryos we freeze are very good quality; the freezing process has been the same for 40 years. We can show data (not only from our company but also from others) that the important factor is the recipient cow— her nutrition, age, reproductive soundness, and how she is managed. In a good herd, we should be getting a pregnancy rate of 55 to 65% depending on whether we use fresh or frozen embryos,” says DeGrofft.

“Fresh embryos give a slightly higher pregnancy rate, 5 to 7% more than frozen embryo pregnancy rate. We anticipate 55 to 65% but some clients we’ve worked for get 65 to 70% because they understand the management of the donors and recipients. Due to their good management, we get better results—not so much because of what we do, but because of what they do,” he explains.

Costs vary amongst companies. People should contact their ET company and look at the costs that might be involved, whether for collection of embryos to be frozen or transferred immediately into the recipient, or whether they want to do IVF (in vitro fertilization) using sexed semen.

Most beef cattle producers who utilize AI are using conventional semen rather than sexed semen, but the use of sexed semen is slowly increasing. “We use some sexed semen occasionally in our reproductive business. It’s best if used in virgin heifers, versus cows, due to the smaller size of the reproductive tract.”

The recipient cow, both for A.I. and E.T.—her nutrition, age, reproductive soundness, and how she is managed is a large factor in the success of the process.

Almost all AI and ET companies in the U.S. and Canada use synchronization protocols. “Every bull stud’s semen catalog has these protocols listed at the back of their catalog—a page for heifers and a page for cows,” he says.

Not as many people in the beef industry (compared to dairy) are using IVF or sexed semen for producing embryos. “Most producers we work with can use both the heifers and the bull calves, because they can place a heifer back into their herd, or a bull for their annual bull sale. We don’t often get requests to use sexed semen for donor cows,” says DeGrofft.

“The use of sexed semen creates a different scenario; we have to use a specialized protocol to utilize sexed semen properly in a donor cow, or an AI project. It’s not the same as when using conventional semen, primarily because of the reduced number of sperm cells in a straw of sexed semen,” he says.

Colorado Genetics does all their reproductive work on the producer’s farm or ranch. “The producers therefore need to evaluate their facilities, and labor to put cows through the ET program and synchronize the recipients. Timing is very important, so it is crucial that they follow the superovulation protocol correctly. An experienced AI technician is also required for breeding the donor cows,” says DeGrofft.

“We can use various programs for heifers or for cows, though some people still use simple heat detection for 21 days and breed accordingly. There are some benefits when using synchronized and timed AI.”

Some people ask if all the calves will be born in just a few days if the cows are bred in a synchronized program and bred on the same day. “We know that even though they are all bred the same day (to calve about 9 months later) calving will be spread over 30 days; a few cows will calve as much as two weeks early while others will calve two weeks late. The majority of those AI calves will come within a 10 day window, but they do not all calve exactly nine months from the AI date!”

INTERNATIONAL MARKET FOR EMBRYOS

“There is an increasing demand for U.S. genetics,” DeGrofft says. Embryos are a bio-secure method for exporting seedstock genetics. A person can ship embryos even when importations of live animals is prohibited. We don’t know of any diseases that have been transmitted from donor cows to recipient cows by exporting embryos. There are strict regulations for preparing embryos for export and there is virtually no risk for spreading disease,” he says.

When selecting semen to produce embryos, if breeders may later want to export embryos internationally, they need to use CSS (Certified Semen Services) approved semen. They also need to use a company that has an accredited veterinarian in the American Embryo Transfer Association to collect and prepare those embryos for export,” says DeGrofft. Shipping embryos to other countries has advantages over sending live cattle, besides disease issues. “The embryo transfer calves are born and raised in the local environment so they are often much better adapted than any animals that could be sent from the U.S. to a foreign country,” he explains.

Heat Detection Tips for Cattlemen

Early Signs - Before Cow is in Standing Heat

1. A small string of mucus may drip from a reclining cow a day or two before she is in standing heat.

2. A heifer bawls when others are quiet. This sign is not often observed in cows.

3. She is more alert and observant, looking around and watching for other cows in heat.

4. She walks in a rapid, busi ness-like manner. While other cows saunter, she walks as if she has places to go.

5. She may be standing u when all of her herdmates are lying down.

Signs of Standing Heat

1. She sniffs other cows much as a bull does when he checks for heat.

2. She stands to be ridden (the single best sign of heat).

3. She attempts to ride other cows.

2. Hair on the tail or rump may be slightly matted where mucus has dried.

3. There may be mud on the hips or hair rubbed off where other cattle have ridden.

4. If heifers have been branded several weeks earlier, the scab may have been rubbed off during riding.

5. A cow that is tired from riding at night may be one of the few cows in the herd lying down.

Mounting/riding activity, both by the cow in heat and by young bulls, steers or other females, is a strong visual indicator of standing heat.

4. She places her head on the back or rump of another cow or throws her head as if attempting to mount. When she mounts, a copious string of mucus will often be expelled. If she is in heat, pelvic thrusts will be vigorous - much like a bull.

5. Mucus can often be seen on the tail or rump.

6. She will attempt to join other cows in heat. If a fence prevents this, she will walk back and forth.

7. Cows in heat will stand closer together than normal. An aerial photo would show cows in heat standing much closer to each other than the rest of the herd.

8. She may be followed and/or ridden by young bull calves as young as 3 to 4 months of age.

Late Signs - Cow Has Just Gone Out of Heat

1. She has wet or matted hair, particularly over the top of the shoulders.

If the cow has been in heat, mucus will often be expelled when a breeding tube is inserted.

If the cow has been in heat during the past few hours, the inseminator will note that the vagina is more slick and the cervix more dilated.

A string of blood on the tail or rump is an indicator that the cow was in heat two to three days earlier.

Other Signs of Heat

1. Vulva is more swollen, moist and smooth than when the cow is not in heat.

2. Lining of the vulva becomes dark pink or bright red in color.

3. The cow butts heads with other cows.

4. Udder and teats may become tighter because calf has not had the opportunity to nurse.

Time to Check Heat

1. A Canadian study showed that 68% of mountings occur between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. (25% from 6:00 p.m. to midnight, and 43% from midnight to 6:00 a.m.). Therefore, late in the evening and early in the morning are the best times to watch cows for heat.

2. Take plenty of time when checking. A few minutes is not sufficient. Take 20 or 30 minutes of constant observation.

A Planned Calving Season

What are the two biggest investments you make in your herd each year? For most people, that answer would be time and feed costs. Not only does planned calving help reduce costs, it also enables other management practices to be implemented more e ectively.

Best management practices should include a vaccination schedule for your herd. If you have calves in your pasture ranging from birth up to a year, it requires much more time and diligence to keep them all vaccinated properly according to their age. Often schedules get behind or missed simply because of the extra time required to gather calves at various times throughout the year instead of being able to gather all of them at the same time.

lactating. If you are supplying supplemental feed or minerals, it is di cult to make sure cows are receiving the required nutrition when the needs in the herd vary greatly. One will be underfed while the other is eating more than she needs. This not only results in a cow becoming poor while lactating, but wasting money overfeeding a dry cow.

Another consideration is nutritional requirements of cows at various stages of production, from dry to

The seasons where you are located can play a big part in choosing calving seasons as well, not only for safe calving, but for feed costs and forage quality as well. Spring calving works well for most areas, and left on their own many cows naturally fall into a spring calving schedule. Nature knows their nutritional needs will be high right before and after the calf is born and the abundant spring and early summer forage meets those needs. The season can also play a part in the ease of a female re-breeding as well. Try to time calving season so a female is ready to breed before temperature extremes (hot or cold) a ect her ability to breed back

Areas with a longer winter may push their calving season back a little later in the spring. This allows calves to be born in better weather conditions and takes into consideration later spring growth or forage. In some areas, timing can be tricky to avoid trying to have the cow re-breed in hot summer temperatures. Heat stress can interfere not only with conception but fertility of

So why would anyone choose a fall calving period? Depending on where you live and what forages you have available, some producers actually get better growth results from their cool weather forages due to nutrient density. Also, those calves will be ready to sell in the spring when everyone has pastures coming on strong and they are looking to buy replacement animals or add to their herds while forage is abundant. When cows are calving, they need to be monitored. It is much easier, especially if you are the only one taking care of you cattle, to watch for potential issues when the cows are calving in a predictable time frame. We know that Longhorns are renowned for easy calving, but that process is made even more positive by having calves come in good weather and being around to help if there is an issue. As seen often on Facebook lately, even if a Longhorn cow has no problem calving, predators tend to strike right after birth. Your diligence is rec-

ommended to reduce potential losses and a planned season makes that easier for you.

One argument given by breeders for calving year round is to always have animals at various ages for potential customers. In the Longhorn world that is a common practice. One option to maintain variety in the ages of your available Longhorns while still benefitting from the controlled breeding season is to split your herd into a fall calving pasture and a spring calving pasture.

This allows you to see over time whether one season out-performs the other in terms of costs and production. It also makes it easier to move a cow that didn’t rebreed successfully into the other group without much loss of production time.

Unfortunately, there is no calving season that works best for every producer. Each breeder must take into consideration available forage and nutrition, seasons in the region they live in and how limited their time investment needs to be. Even a hobbyist must be careful to not let feed costs or time investment become so high that the cattle become a burden instead of a pleasure to own.

While the Longhorn market does not always operate on the same precepts as the local sale barn, the principles of producing healthy calves while keeping cows in good condition, re-breeding quickly and not eating you out of house and home are the same as any other cattle producer. Taking the time to consider your resources of forage and time, as well as the climate you are located in, and then choosing a calving season accordingly should ultimately reflect in your bottom line.

Since breeding systems are so dependent on your forage and climate for optimum success, seeking out the help of a local county agent or other cattle producers in your area may help you determine what would suit your herd the best.

Having calves in your pasture with a wide range of ages can make management practices such as vaccinations harder to coordinate. Having a set calving period can help with meeting nutritional requirements, especially for the cows.

All Cattle Must Be Removed By 12:00 p.m.

• A Horn Showcase female entry must have had at least one recorded TLBAA calf, be nursing a calf at side or be confirmed bred by 36 months of age by palpation, ultrasound or BioPRYN blood test conducted 60-days past breeding and be so noted on a health certificate signed by a veterinarian and furnished to the show office.

SATELLITE AWARD WINNER

An award will be given to the host of the satellite who has the most animals measured at their location that are NOT owned by the satellite host. Animals that are owned in partnership by the host do not count.

It will be decided by number of measurement entries, not by number of animals.

As an example, an animal entered and measured for composite will count three times.

GET OF SIRE AND PRODUCE OF DAM

• Get of Sire and Produce of Dam will each offer a Junior Division and a Senior Division.

• Each Division is based on the age of the offspring of the animal entered. The Junior Division consists of offspring between the ages of two and five years of age. The Senior Division consists of offspring six years and older.

• Sires must have three offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.

• Dams must have two offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.

• Both living and deceased bulls and cows can be entered since entries are based on measurements of offspring.

• Scoring for each animal will be computed by adding the values of TTT, TH and Composite of all three offspring for a bull or both offspring for a cow. The bull or cow with the highest value of the total added measurements amongst offspring will be the winner.

• Animals do not need to be present to compete in this class – can be measured at a satellite or in .

• Only breeding animals (Bulls or Cows) can compete as offspring.

• Offspring may be produced by natural breeding, artificial insemination or embryo transfer.

The TLBAA HSC Futurity is set up by age divisions to allow breeders the opportunity to exhibit the total package animals that represent their breeding operation.

• There is a 75% cash payout based on the class size. Payout will go to the top third of the class.

• Animals must be entered in at least one horn measurement contest.

• Animals will enter the ring based on age. Youngest to oldest. When the animal being exhibited walks into the ring, the 5 judge panel will be given the animals DOB.

• With the 5 judge panel, the high score and the low score will be thrown out and the remaining three judges will be added together for the final score. In the event of a tie there will be a tie breaker judge selected in advance. That judge’s score will be the tie breaker in the event of a tie.

• Animals must measure in at least one measurement class to participate in Futurity as well as be eligible for a Superior Award.

ULTIMATE COW & BULL AWARD

• One bull and one female will be chosen based on popular vote.

• Animals must be present in Oklahoma City to be eligible.

• Ballots will be available at the TLBAA desk during the event for voting.

HORN SHOWCASE SUPERIOR AWARD

This innovative award showcases our most elite animals that possess the total package we all strive for. To achieve the Superior Award, animals are required to compete in the horn measurement contest, as well as be judged on conformation in the Horn Showcase Futurity.

To be win the Superior Award, an animal must place first in both a measurement class and their Futurity class.

Winners will have a trophy mailed to them after the event.

BULL ALLEY

• Bulls must be TLBAA A.I. certified and have an A.I. certified number to sell semen and participate in most straws sold.

• Bulls that are living must be present in Oklahoma City; deceased bulls may be entered for semen sales only. (Deceased bulls may have their offspring on site to represent them)

• Each owner should bring a semen tank with semen for sale or have semen sent to Champion Genetics. Must have 50 straws minimum available. If less than 50 straws available, seller must pay shipping to buyer.

• No minimum straw purchases allowed.

• Bulls must be entered in a measurement class.

• All semen sales are subject to a 7% commission.

Youth 2024 Mosser Scholarship Winners

The Mosser Family Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of the late Houston businessman, Philip Mosser ,who passed away March 9, 2005. Philip, 37, left behind a wife and three sons. The scholarship also memorializes the late Vicki Mosser, who died on January 30, 2006. Vicki was the beloved wife of Rex Mosser for 42 years and a loving mother.

Rex Mosser was a well-known Texas Longhorn breeder who was very supportive of the industry. He contributed to practically every big Texas Longhorn event and promoted these great cattle through his herd of Longhorns.

What type of volunteer work have you done in your community or within the Longhorn industry? I am currently a Texas FFA Ford Leadership Scholar which is a program that 10 High School seniors in Texas receive every year. This program challenges students to put together a community service project. Mine is collecting funds and rehabilitating a baseball field in Paradise. I have also participated in local food drives, Heart of a Champion and many others. In the Longhorn Community I have ring-stewarded, collected funds for the TLBT Service Project and volunteered my time to help younger individuals in the Longhorn Community.

Was there a person or group that made a significant difference in your success within the longhorn industry? The individuals who have made a significant difference in my success within the Longhorn Industry would be my family, the Hammacks and the Lowries.

My family, my older sister Hailey and younger sister Harlee along with my mom, have pushed me not necessarily to be the “best” but to be the kindest, most genuine individual I can be. They push me every day to go out into our local community along with the Longhorn Community, and make a difference in the lives of the youth in it by being a source of light and kindness. Mark and Kim Hammack have outstretched a hand to us in need and are an amazing family. They sold me my heifer when I was searching for one for the FWSSR Calf Scramble program. This heifer I have come to love dearly and one day will be the foundation of my herd. They have also outstretched a helping hand to me when my family was left without a truck this past year heading to Cattlemen’s. I had called him asking if he could haul us and instead of deflecting and trying to get out of it all he asked was, “When and where do you need me?” They are truly one of a kind. And lastly, the Lowries. While they have never sold us an animal, or hauled us anywhere, they are always there for me when I need it. This year me and Allison Lowrie are serving as TLBT Vice President and President, respectively, and have grown closer even after our many years as friends. They are an amazing family that has truly taught me what it means to be a whole-hearted individual. Are there challenges or obstacles that the youth face within the breed that you would want to change in the future? There is one challenge or obstacle that I would want the youth no longer to face and I am more than willing to be able to help them fight this challenge. These are the “cliques” that have emerged within our community. I agree that every single person in the Longhorn Community should have a group of people that they can rely on and depend on, but these groups should not be exclusive. I have seen many fallouts within our community and this is going to happen within any breed, but talking negatively about anyone, especially children, is uncalled for and frankly disturbing. We preach that the Longhorn Community is a giant family, but in recent years I have felt a great divide in the TLBT. I wish that we as breeders and individuals would realize that we have more power as a breed as one, not fragments of broken groups. What impact do you think you can make in  the Longhorn breed? An impact I hope I have made in my years, and hope to continue to make is the feeling of others having your back. I make an effort to go out of my way to make sure that others individuals, whether I am their best friend or don’t even know their name, feel welcomed and loved in our amazing breed. This can consist of clapping for them in class, giving them pointers on how to truly exhibit their projects strengths, telling them a good job, or celebrating with them. Everyone, especially the youth of the TLBT, needs a support system. If I can be one and promote this in the TLBT I will know that I have made an impact on the Longhorn Breed.

When you’ve received your degree, what part of the Longhorn industry will you continue to be a part of? The Longhorn Industry is one that has developed me into the young man I am today. Part of the industry I hope to stay in is the show circuit. This is due to the experiences I have had while exhibiting Texas Longhorns. My main goal within the breed is to get to a point with my herd where I am able to donate steers to programs like the Ark-La-Tex Steer Program or be able to donate steers to individuals wanting to get started in the program. These programs are so necessary and beneficial to the youth of tomorrow and have their impact on me.

In what ways do you see the Longhorn breed evolving over the years ahead? I have seen an evolution in the Longhorn Breed even since I was a little 4th grade kid until now as a senior in high school. An evolution that I see happening over the next few years is Longhorns being taken more seriously as a beef and stock show breed in that circuit. This is a prediction, but also a hope. By promoting the good our breed does for our youth and what it can do for the beef markets, we can have good-standing in that market. We still have steps to take steps in order to do this, but I do see this in the near future.

What I mean by this is I hope that stock shows stop looking at us as a tourist attraction and more of a reputable breed. We still have work to get there, and I know that through the determination of the breed and strong-willed individuals we can get there.

What is your major? Agricultural Systems Management

Share your thoughts on choosing your major.  Becoming an Agricultural Systems Management major will grant me many options in the workforce after graduation as opposed to other degrees in the agricultural world. This degree is technical in nature, as we work with engines, tractors, heavy equipment, food processing, and electrical systems. Through this I am becoming a more well-rounded member of the agricultural industry because it is broadening my horizons to more aspects of this industry than just animal production. Most animal related fields require additional years of schooling to become a productive member in their respective fields. However, with this degree, I will be ready to earn a respected position in a company with agricultural goals.

What type of volunteer work have you done in your community or within the Longhorn industry? Throughout my ten years of participation in the Longhorn industry I have done many things to try and better the breed and those that have helped me along the way. Volunteer work is a crucial part of our society and I strive to make life better for those that I interact with, within society. One way I do this is by visiting many ranches to work and assist them in working their cattle. I do this by vaccinating, drawing blood for pregnancy tests, halter training and other aspects of herd management, most notably (outside of my family’s ranch) at the WP Ranch in Edge, TX and Double H Longhorns in Angleton, exas. Other volunteer opportunities have been at events such as the World Show, where I served as a ring steward alongside other breeders in the Youth Show. I also have served numerous times at the TLBGCA Spring Show ring stewarding, as well as designing buckles and awards. Because the TLBGCA is my home affiliate, I also have served at their futurity and sale with raffle sales, cow patty bingo and serving lunches to helpers. In the Longhorn world, I have also served for the last five years at Stephen Head’s show camp, teaching young showman with their showmanship and overall cattle handling skills. In other areas, I volunteer with my local church every year at their event called Blessing the Bay Area. We spend an entire day in the communities in which we live by helping others. I have participated in this event for ten years. We have helped Pregnancy centers, single moms with housework and even hanging dry wall. When Harvey hit the Houston area, I also was able to help for several days with an organization called Ten Days of Hope. We procured much needed supplies and helped hundreds of families get back in their homes. List awards, scholarships, publications, or special recognitions you have received. 3-time TAMU College of Ag and Life Sciences Dean’s List (3.75+ GPA/ semester); Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering Hardy Plowman Tools endowed scholarship; Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering Study Abroad scholarships; STLA Nathaniel Faske Memorial Scholarship; Selected as a student panelist for the McFerrin Initiative to represent the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering; TLBGCA scholarship (2021); TLBT Bright Futures scholarship (2021) Was there a person or group that made a significant difference in your success within the longhorn industry? I was in the fifth grade when my family relocated from Ohio to Texas, I struggled to adapt as the new kid. However, thanks to my sister’s involvement in the NASA Longhorn project, I was introduced to Stephen Head, who became my mentor in the Longhorn community. Stephen not only taught me invaluable skills in showmanship and cattle handling but also welcomed me into a supportive community that has shaped me profoundly over the past decade. His guidance has impacted my success in the Longhorn industry and nurtured my personal growth.

Are there challenges or obstacles that the youth face within the breed that you would want to change in the future? As someone who has witnessed the evolution of the Longhorn youth community, I’ve observed a shift towards increased competitiveness, sometimes at the expense of camaraderie. When I started showing, the breed was much less cutthroat than it is now. I believe the youth of this organization are becoming more segmented and cliquey which is degrading the friendships built on collective enjoyment that used to make our youth organization so special. With the increased levels of competition, the inherent delight of going to shows and enjoying the sport has gone to the wayside, because not everyone gets to walk out with a blue ribbon. I believe a big part of this is that the youth organization has grown immensely, which is fantastic for the breed, but I would love to help in any ways that I can to help facilitate relationship building and bring back that “small group” feel to the breed.

To illustrate what I mean by ‘small group’ feel, while I was at the Ark-La-Tex Lufkin Show this last year, I was working in the barn and saw children having a blast after completing their work. The Hatler children, wanting to hang out with the Mathey children, were helping pitch in to finish haying, scooping poop, and feeding so they could make up a game jumping over shavings bags. This is how I remember my youth, and I would love to do anything to capture that for all children in the barn. It was so much fun watching them and enjoying the breed all at the same time.

What impact do you think you can make in  the Longhorn breed? I want to make a big impact! I have always told people that my goal is to raise the “super cow”, but really, I just want to raise good cattle. I want cattle that are progressive in body style and muscling, while also keeping the traits that make longhorns special, like horn, loud color, and easy keeping. Beyond this, I want to help the youth. I want to be a mentor and an encourager by going to shows, helping when I can, and donating quality cattle to kids who are just starting out. I don’t just want my longhorn legacy to be quality animals, I want to make a personal impact on the next generation of breeders. I absolutely love interacting with all the youth. When I see them in the barn, they ask me for my opinion, and advice, some will even show me their ‘crazy’ animal and ask for showmanship tips, it’s moments like these that I know this is where I want to be. Someday I hope to be a TLBT mentor that can help the organization grow and flourish. Currently, the TLBT has great leadership, and they are doing so much, I would love to ensure that this momentum continues for a long time- my future children will need a place to belong!

When you’ve received your degree, what part of the Longhorn industry will you continue to be a part of? After graduation I plan to continue to attend shows and futurities so I can keep up with my camp kids and meet with breeders that can help me gain more knowledge to better my personal herd. I want to stay involved with showing because that is where the youth are, and I want to encourage them to continue in their endeavors, by being a successful breeder who can lead by example. As I shift gears with my cattle, I plan to start competing in futurities, of which I have already started this year at the Winchester futurity. This will allow me to engage in healthy competition with the breeders I have admired for so long and try to learn and grow as a breeder and person.

In what ways do you see the Longhorn breed evolving over the years ahead? Over the years the breed has evolved from small, rangy cattle with durability, to moderate framed, decently muscled and horned cattle to the cattle we see today, which are one of two kinds; huge with heavy muscle, dense bone, but very little horn and few traditional longhorn characteristics, or small framed with lighter muscle and EXTREME horn length and shape. I think that the future of the longhorn breed is going to continue to be divided like this as the two sides do not wish to come together and decide which is the preferred direction. I think this dichotomy is a true testament to the versatility of the longhorn breed and exhibits the power of breeders and the genetics they choose to focus on. I believe that the future of show cattle is bright as our cattle continue to creep their way into a commercial setting with the cows continuing to get heavier, bigger, and more streamlined. I also believe that the futurity side is going to continue to push the envelope by breeding bigger horns with more shape and visual interest! However, where I would hope the breed would move is to a happy medium. I think we as a breed should want the bigger, well-built, cows because our animals produce an amazingly tasty and healthy beef product, while also breeding in a flashy coat, stunning horn set, and maintaining traditional longhorn characteristics which sustain the healthiness/ leanness of our beef. I think this is feasible, but only if the two sides can come together and realize that there needs to be common ground in order for the long-term success of the breed. One side is losing what makes our cattle unique, and the other is losing what makes our beef cattle breed, beef cattle. We need to embrace what the longhorn is as a breed. It may not be the biggest animals with the highest grading meat, but it is the most unique and beautiful breed that produces the healthiest beef in the industry. Overall, if there is no change in this direction, no other breed could have 2 dramatically different sides, and both be as valuable as ours are!

Ava Sedlacek What is your major? Business Administration and Music

Share your thoughts on choosing your major. I am attending Kansas State University in the fall for the Accelerated Music (BMUS) / Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. I will graduate after 5 years of college with a Bachelor’s in Music and a Master in Business Administration. I chose to dual major in these two areas because I believe they will both assist me in achieving a fulfilling career. Music is a major part of my life, but I have also excelled at business classes and within the Future Business Leaders of America. I hope a music related path will be my primary career, but I understand this goal will be extremely hard to succeed in, so hopefully a business degree will allow me to be financially stable, while also pursuing my dreams in music.

What type of volunteer work have you done in your community or within the Longhorn industry? 2020-2021: 14 total hours of community service in my local community. This consisted of volunteering at the Volleyball and Football game concession stands, Trick-or-Treat for Canned Goods event, the FBLA Community Service project, where we read “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” to kids in the community and organized activities related to the book, and cleaning the Hanover Theater / Music program storage room in the basement of my school. 2021-2022: 11 total hours of community service in my local community. This consisted of volunteering at the Volleyball and Football game concession stands, the Trick-or-Treat for Canned Goods event, the FBLA American Enterprise project, and the FBLA Community Service project.

Was there a person or group that made a significant difference in your success within the longhorn industry? My dad, Joe Sedlacek of Lazy J Longhorns, has greatly influenced and directed me towards success in the longhorn industry. He has taught and shown me the importance of bloodlines, genetics, and various physical traits on a longhorn that can show their worth and reproductivity as they grow. My dad has taught me a lot about caring for animals and livestock, and he trusts me to care for his entire cow herd while he is gone for sales and long-

horn events. I have watched him go out of his way to help other longhorn breeders and try to fix wrongs that have been done to them. This example has helped me learn about customer service and how to run a business.

Are there challenges or obstacles that the youth face within the breed that you would want to change in the future? I think youth face many obstacles when trying to grow and maintain a longhorn herd. In my area of Kansas, it is very difficult to start ranching as a career, you must inherit land and equipment in order to make a business profitable. If a youth wants to start having a longhorn herd, and does not have those resources, it is difficult, if not impossible.

While distributing physical resources would be impossible, knowledge and experience can be passed down to new breeders. This wouldn’t necessarily mean sharing all of someone’s secrets, but a tip here and there could greatly help new breeders gain a foothold in the industry. Another issue is balancing the travel to sales with your daily life, such as work or school. In my own experience, most longhorn events occupy all day Thursday through Sunday. It’s difficult to miss school that often for events, so I have to pick and choose which events I can attend.

What impact do you think you can make in  the Longhorn breed? Singing the National Anthem at events can help me to put my name out there, so when it comes time to sell cattle that I helped raise with my Dad, it’s not a stranger selling, but a someone the audience knows of. Attending events is also good for networking, the longhorn industry can branch out to many different fields of careers, so regardless of what I pursue after college, I can still rely on longhorns for many different reasons.

When you’ve received your degree, what part of the Longhorn industry will you continue to be a part of? I will use my business degree to help run and do accounting work for the ranch, as well as run the marketing and social media accounts for Lazy J Longhorns and the Joe Chute. My business degree will also give the opportunity to obtain an in depth knowledge of statistics. Statistics is a major part of what my Dad does when organizing what herd sire to use on our cow herd. By looking at past genetics, other calves produced by the sire and the cow, and other small factors, a breeder can determine which bloodlines will most benefit their herd, or what animals will provide the desired traits, such as color, body, and horns. I also want to continue singing and performing at longhorn events, music will always be a major part of who I am, so I would love to keep music in all areas of my life.

In what ways do you see the Longhorn breed evolving over the years ahead? I think breeders will change what traits they think are desirable, like what specific color, body, or horn shape / style. As preferences change, the longhorn breed will evolve to fit the breeders’ desires. I also believe sales and futurities will become more streamlined as technology advances. Organizing how events are run, and ensuring each event is open and accessible to new breeders will help the longhorn industry grow.

What is your major? Animal Science - Production

Share your thoughts on choosing your major.  Growing up, showing Texas Longhorns was a big part of my life and my entire personality. I remember being chute side at 8 years old captivated by the everyday practices of caring for and breeding our cattle. I didn’t know it at the time, but they would eventually play an even bigger role when it came time to choose my future career. I knew I wanted to have some part in producing a safe, wholesome beef product and be a strong advocate for our breed, so I chose Animal Science – Production. Upon graduation, I would like to go to grad school to further my education in Reproductive Physiology with an emphasis in cattle.

What type of volunteer work have you done in your community or within the Longhorn industry? Double H Longhorns, Showmanship Instructor, June 2020- July 2022; San Angelo Stock Show, Ring Steward, February 2022; FFA Livestock Judging Clinic, Instructor, March 2024

List awards, scholarships, publications, or special recognitions you have received. Champion Collegiate Livestock Judging Team at Houston Livestock Show, March 2024; Champion Collegiate Livestock Judging Team at San Antonio Livestock Show, February 2024; Reserve Champion Collegiate Livestock Judging Team at Dixie National, February 2024; Champion Collegiate Livestock Judging Team at Fort Worth Livestock Show, February 2024; Reserve Champion Collegiate Livestock Judging Team at National Western Stock Show, January 2024; 3rd Overall Collegiate Livestock Judging Team at Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Congress, January 2024; National American FFA Degree, October 2022

Was there a person or group that made a significant difference in your success within the longhorn industry? My Uncle Stephen and Aunt Kim made the biggest impact on my life when they invited me to come show their longhorns. They took me under their wing during a difficult time in my life and taught me not only about their love for cattle but their love for Jesus Christ. They used cattle as a tool to teach me what it means to be a good steward and a better human being. Some of these lessons included common sense, work ethic, responsibility, and integrity. These building blocks I learned when I was young, I have carried without me through my life, and they continue to be attributes I strive to live by.

Are there challenges or obstacles that the youth face within the breed that you would want to change in the future? One of the goals I have for the industry would be to introduce our longhorn cattle in a positive light into other Junior and Open shows across the country and not be so separate. As a youth, I always felt like there was a part of the industry I was missing out on by not being in the same barn as all the other junior cattle exhibitors. If we showcased a set of elite cattle that they can begin to respect as a competitor, we could open that door truly start to educate people on what longhorn cattle are and prove that they have a place in the commercial cattle and the beef industries. What impact do you think you can make in  the Longhorn breed? My fondest memories were made as a youth in the show arena. I found out who I was and who I wanted to be in a show barn, and I would like to continue encouraging others to do the same. While being a full-time college student, I still find the time to be engaged in my breeding program and with the current TLBT youth. I have loaned out show heifers in the past, and plan to do so in the future as well, to give others the same opportunities I was so graciously given by breeders who believed in me. To have someone that believes in you and invests in your future, was the best gift I was given. I want to give back in the same way.

When you’ve received your degree, what part of the Longhorn industry will you continue to be a part of? I would like to continue to raise longhorn cattle geared more toward the show industry. My goal is to raise functional females that will generate high-growth calves that still showcase all the traditional values of a Texas Longhorn. While in college, I have continued to work for multiple breeders both on the ranch and on the road at shows. I find both to be rewarding ways to continue to make connections with breeders and longhorn enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds. In what ways do you see the Longhorn breed evolving over the years ahead? I would like to see the longhorn breed continue striving to bridge the gap between “show cattle” and “futurity cattle”. From a young age, I always wondered, while going to these events, why the cattle that won at each competition looked so different. While I appreciate the diversity of the longhorn breed that allows every breeder to produce what they love, I feel that we should hold ourselves as producers to a higher standard to make the cattle visibly diverse while remaining functional.

Extolling Longhorns to the Homesteading Audience

(Editor’s note: On Facebook recently I came across an announcement by TLBAA member Courtney Feigl. I reached out to ask how she cam to present the Texas Longhorn breed in a magazine targeting those interested in homesteading.)

“I was contacted by the creator of the ‘Hillsider’ magazine through my Instagram account (find us @mrsgreenpasturescattle). She showed up in my DM’s saying she liked my page’s content and asked if I’d like to write an article to be featured in the upcoming summer edition of her magazine” explained Feigl.

“I said heck yeah, I never turn down an opportunity to advocate for the Longhorn breed. I could’ve chosen any topic related to what my page is about (gardening, chickens, ducks, cattle, DIY farm related

projects, etc.) But any time I have the option to speak about what I’m most passionate about it’ll be Longhorns every time.

“This magazine’s audience is predominantly homesteaders and people living the farm lifestyle. I hope I sparked an interest with someone just like Aaron and I, years ago, instantly hooked the moment we saw the breed and realized all they have to offer.”

According to their website, “The Hillsider Magazine is the ultimate guide for those who want to live off the land and embrace a homesteading lifestyle. Created collaboratively by a group of online educators, homesteaders, and creators, this magazine is packed with informative articles that cover all aspects of homesteading. Whether you’re interested in preserving food, raising livestock, or living off the grid, The Hillsider Magazine has got you covered.”
