TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS

EDITOR’S NOTES EVER DILIGENT Walking fence looking for damage or places cattle have created possible escape routes is an expected chore for their owners and caretakers. Calf watch goes without saying as well. However, equally important is carrying a trash bag and picking up this stray pieces of trash that find their way into your pasture. While warnings about plastic net wrap and twine on hay causing issues are common, those shredded plastic bags your mower cut up or even the entire grocery sack can pose a hazard that may cost an animal its’ life. Cattle are curious and they often eat without much regard fro what may be mixed in with the grass or hay. Turn to pg. 22 to learn more about hardware and software that can cause losses in your herd unless you diligently remove foreign matter from any area they spend time in. I do have an announcement for those who have missed the printed Membership Directory. We will once again print it in July 2023 Trails and try to continue printing it in odd years as we did previously. In a time when we didn’t think it was utilized as much we have learned that many find it an indispensable resource. Be sure to watch future issues of the magazine and E-Trails to learn more about this reference issue and the opportunities you will have to make your program stand out. Thinking ahead is another area we could all be more diligent in. This month we are giving you the information you need to start thinking about people you know who would deserve a nomination for one of the TLBAA Special Awards. The criteria for each award, past winners and a nomination form can be found starting on pg. 44. To be nominated by your peers means a lot, but to be voted as winner of the award is truly special. Don’t wait until the award winners are announced to wish you had nominated someone. Go ahead and get to thinking. It’s never too early to turn a nomination in. Are you enjoying the color added to your pasture by those 2022 calves? Start taking some high quality photos of them so you can decide which ones to enter in the 5th Annual Rodger Damrow Colorful Calf Contest. Rules can be found on pg. 47. This has to be one of the most economical ways to show off your production in the pages of Trails Magazine and have a chance to win the cover spot! $20 is a fast food meal these days. Heads up on some diligence in Trails concerning advertising. We are working on an advertising order form to make it easier for us, as well as you, to keep up with your advertising requests. It’s not meant to complicate anyone’s life, merely to ensure that we are all on the same page about size, month and cost of your advertising in Trails. Hopefully it will make it even easier for our members to find ways to make the most of their marketing dollars. Until next month, Blessings,

Association News

Chairman’s Message Greetings, It’s been a little busy around the TLBAA this month. Besides the normal day to day operations in the office, it’s the time of the year when people are renewing their memberships, and this year, when you pay your memberships, remember that it’s time to check and correct all your information that will go in the new Membership Directory coming out in July of 2023. This is a great way to get your information out to all members, and it will be out there to everyone for two years. On that note, Myra and the gang have several options to advertise, highlight and your ranch in that issue. Please check with them if you are interested in doing something like that. This month’s issue has a great article on the things your cattle pasture eat and the problems it causes when they eat metal, plastic and other non-digestible things. The World Expo is coming up this month and coming together to be a great one, again. Hats off to the World Show Committee and all the unnamed and behind the scenes volunteers for all their hard work. The Senior Sale “Catalog” is in this issue showing the Senior animals that are selling at World Show. These are animals owned and that have been shown by graduating seniors to help them raise money for college or to upgrade their herds. It is a great cause to put money into and a lot of fun and excitement. Also, the Show Schedules and a list of reminders for the World Show is included in this issue to help with getting everything ready for the show. I would like to give a big thank you out to everyone that helped sponsor this year’s event. Without you and your support, it would be a “hard row to hoe”. The Horn Showcase coming up quickly in October, is in full swing taking entries for the sale, futurity, Bull Alley and measuring classes with all forms and consignment forms in this issue. The Horn Showcase is in a new location in Wichita Falls, Texas. These two are the largest events that the TLBAA puts on and your support is needed and will be greatly appreciated in making these happen. Sponsorship packages are available for both and you can contact Pam Robison at the office, or any of the committee members if you would choose to support them. This month has the information and reminder for the upcoming nominations for Division B Directors. It is the time of the year for the members of this division to think about who they would like to have to serve them on the board. Great things are happening with the TLBAA, and thank all the members for their faith in this association.

To my Longhorn Family, Thank You,

Keith Du Bose, Chairman of the Board Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America

Not participating this year? Come on out and be a part of the fun anyway! The TLBAA World Expo is a great chance to see Longhorns and meet some great people. The event is free to attend and the barns are open to walk through and get a chance to meet breeders and showmen. If you have been considering showing but have not made the plunge yet, here’s your chance to get some insight, see what goes in to participating and talk to folks who have years of experience with showing Longhorn cattle. The youth are also eager to share their experiences so you get a better idea of whether or not showing Longhorns isn’t something you would want your youth to be a part of. Some of the highlights for spectators are: • TLBT National Youth Show - watching these kids from Pee Wee through Seniors handle these magnificent animals is simply amazing. • Texas Gold Futurity - Animals are judged individually by a panel of judges, scored by how they stand up against an “ideal” Longhorn in the judges view. • Non-Haltered Division - Female Longhorns freely roam the ring while judged. • TLBT Senior Sale - Graduating seniors offer Longhorns at auction to any and all bidders. A great chance to support the youth and take a great Longhorn home. • Breeder Memorial - Honoring members of the Longhorn industry lost since last TLBAA World Expo. • Trophy Steer Show - The largest of the Longhorns take to the ring freely, while being judged from horseback. Truly an awe-inspiring sight. • Haltered Division - Both youth and adults compete in the ring with animals at halter.

All cattle must be removed by noon

PARTICIPATING? DON’T FORGET: Health Papers! All animals must have a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection within 30 days of the show; all females over 30 months of age must have a nursing Texas Longhorn calf at side and/or a positive pregnancy status notes on the CVI. Bring your water tubs, feed buckets and feed/hay. Be sure and turn in your Gold Merit and Senior Sale books to the show office at check in.

14 | June 2022

Photography contestants – bring your 8 x 10 black matted photo to the show office. Silent Auction – bring your items to support the event! Banquet – everyone is invited! Be sure and purchase your tickets ($35) in advance by contacting the TLBAA office – we need an accurate count for the caterer. The banquet begins at 5:00 pm on Saturday, June 25 and will honor TLBAA award, TLBT award and Texas Gold Futurity winners.

Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow

SENIOR HEIFER SALE Sponsored by the Source Friday, June 24th - 5:30pm

Belton, TX

2022 TLBT Senior Heifer Sale

SLT Ellie

DOB: 3/7/21 Reg. Number: C330245

Lot #1

SLT Ellie was born March 7, 2021 but, has only touched the surface of her potential and show career. Her dam is T-J DD and her sire is SLT Rowdy Treeshaker. Ellie has so much to offer, she has a soundness to her and a very positive attitude with a touch of flare. She is well structured and very well balanced, as well as, she has quite a bit of bone to her. I won't lie she does lack in some areas and that is where her breeding comes in to play to help. She has only gotten better in the show ring as she has grown and will be even better at producing calves as she goes. I think she has what it takes to excel in both!

Sydney Turner

TLBT Consignor:

Hi everyone my name is Sydney Turner, and I am a senior from Sperry High School. Currently I am planning to start work in the summer with my CDA I earned from Tulsa Technology Center and work around the farm for the next year. I later plan to attend Tulsa Community College to get my teaching degree and further my education. I've been showing longhorns for about two or three seasons which isn't very long but, man have they made a huge lasting impact on my life. I get asked all the time how animals can teach a person anything but, for me, longhorns have taught me so much.

Speckled Rose

DOB: 4/19/21 Reg. Number: CI331747

Lot #2 TLBT Consignor:

Speckled Rose was born April 19, 2021, here on the ranch. Her sire is BZB Hubba Chex. The dam is Stella Mojita. Speckled Rose has shown well in the ring as a yearling; her highest placing so far has been 4th. She is still growing and looks very promising. I have to say she is the most easy going heifer I have ever worked with or shown in the ring. I believe she would be a great heifer for anyone to show, even someone young or just starting out. With some work and time, I believe Speckled Rose will bloom into an excellent cow to enhance your longhorn herd.

Carlos Boehm CTYRA Chute Dogging, Captain Leader - 4H, 4H Volunteer, Food Bank Volunteer, 5 years showing in Longhorns. “...win or lose I should still always try to do the best I can. I may not have the grand champion animal, but I should take pride in my animal and my skills to show it as good as I can. That way win or lose I’m still a champion.” His future plans include obtaining a criminal justice degree, becoming a law enforcement officer, and owning a cattle ranch with Longhorns.

Lot #7

Hi my name is Jordyn Dabelstein and this sweet girl is 41 Blonde Addytude aka Blondie. When I went to pick up Blondie from the Dickey’s I instantly fell in love! Spending countless hours of building a bond and trust with her, that I will cherish for a lifetime. She has been such a joy to have here on our small ranch. She loves getting cookies (alfalfa cubes) and neck scratches for doing a good job. We have grown a lot together this show season and taught each other some challenging and tough lessons that we both needed. My heart will hold a forever special place for this girl and I know one day she will be a great producer.

PASTURES: Hardware and “Software” Disease in Cattle: Cattle eat quickly, without sorting their feed. Unlike horses that nibble and sort their food with very mobile lips, cattle pull big mouthfuls of feed (pasture grass, hay, etc.) into their mouths with their tongue and start chewing it up. They often ingest foreign material mixed in with their food, especially when eating hay or processed feed—it sometimes contains bits of wire or metal. it may penetrate the pericardial sac around the heart,” he says. Even if it doesn’t go into the heart, any object that goes through the stomach wall allows material from the stomach to leak into the abdominal cavity, causing peritonitis. Cows may ingest fence staples, barn nails, bits of wire or any other objects that find their way into the feed. For many years, people often used baling wire to patch things together, or tie panels to a fence. Sometimes the end of the wire is hanging there and cattle may chew on it. Old fence wire lying in a field, with the hay grown up around it, may get chopped up by the swather and baler--and end up in hay. Nails, roofing tacks and other sharp metal objects around a barnyard or junk pile that cattle have access to may get eaten. In feedlots, metal pieces may come off the feed-handling equipment and be mixed in with the feed. There are also instances of nonmetallic sharp objects (like small sharp rocks) penetrating the stomach wall. It’s not always easy to diagnose a case of “hardware disease” because the signs are not specific. “If a cow has peritonitis, she goes off feed and looks a little dull. These signs could also be indicative of several other diseases. Without proper treatment, the peritonitis will kill her. And if the object penetrates the sac Hardware-metal objects found in cow

They may also consume baling twine and net wrap with their hay, especially if any of that material was left in the field, or if some broken bales were re-baled without removing the twines or net wrap. Curious calves chew on just about anything they encounter—and may ingest twine, plastic or other “junk” they find in their pasture. If they start chewing on something they may not spit it out; they often keep pulling it into their mouths, chew it up a bit and swallow it. Traditionally, “hardware disease” caused by ingestion of metal objects was the most common problem, but today it’s even more common to have a gut blockage caused by eating twines or plastic material.

HARDWARE DISEASE Dr. David Steffen, Veterinary Diagnostic Center, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, says the majority of ingested metal pieces are wire about 2 to 5 inches long. “If the pieces are shorter, they probably pass through the stomachs without causing a problem,” he says. Metal objects that don’t pass on through usually fall into the reticulum. Contractions of this stomach during digestion may push them through the stomach wall and into the diaphragm that lies against it. “If a sharp object makes it through the diaphragm 22 | June 2022

around the heart, by the time she shows signs of heart failure, it’s too late to try to save her,” says Steffen. “Most of the time, the cow will be dying by the time this is diagnosed. If it’s a cow pregnant with a valuable calf, surgery might be performed to remove a rib and open the fluid-filled pericardium so it can drain—so the heart has room to fill and can keep pumping. Some of these cows can be saved, and then you can get them through to parturition and get the valuable calf,” he says. Some people insert a magnet when they see a cow that might be showing early signs of hardware problems. “If a metal object has just started to poke into the wall or start through (introducing infection), putting a magnet into the stomach might pull it back into the reticulum and keep it somewhere safe where it won’t penetrate all the way through,” he says. Once the wire goes all the way through the wall and starts a case of peritonitis, however, the cow is still at risk for fatal infection.

“SOFTWARE” DISEASE Every year a few cattle die mysteriously after a slow decline with loss of weight and diarrhea. The owner or veterinarian may be puzzled about the cause of death unless a necropsy is performed, to find the material plugging the GI tract. Some animals may go off feed and become a little bloated due to gut blockage. Temperature is generally normal, and the heart and lungs seem fine, but the animal is slowly starving to death. Ingestion of various materials (usually plastic) has become a common killer today because cattle have access to more litter. Their pasture or pen may be next

to a highway where litter from passing cars blows over the countryside. If cattle are within a mile of a road, or dumpsters, construction sites, or a subdivision’s garbage that may blow over the fields, cattle often find many interesting objects to chew on. Party balloons and weather balloons may drift many miles from their original source and end up in a remote pasture. Plastic bags, balloons and other “fallout” from human activity may end up inside cattle, and there’s no way to remove this kind of blockage without surgery. Without knowing or suspecting the actual problem, very few veterinarians perform exploratory surgery on cattle. The result is often a slow, painful death, with no definitive symptoms. Small pieces of material may go on through and you never know the animal ate it, though sometimes a bit of plastic bag or a wad of chewed-up baling twine will be seen in a pile of manure. If it’s a large blockage, the animal may stop passing manure, and stop eating. The GI tract is “full” so there’s no room for more feed. Partial blockage leads to diarrhea, since only the liquid contents of the gut can make it through. This leads to suspicion of diseases like coccidiosis, Salmonella, BVD, E. coli, Johne’s disease, liver flukes or other parasites, but there is no effective treatment for “plastic” disease. The best prevention is to pick up every piece of garbage or litter you find in pastures, including old hay twines and net wrap. And if you put up your own hay, never re-bale broken bales without first removing the twines or wrap. Dr. Steffen says that even though the newer baling twines are supposed to be biodegradable (UV rays of sunlight will eventually break down the plastic), it is

Feature not biodegradable in the dark rumen. Net wrap does not degrade at all, and it stays in the rumen. It usually doesn’t make it into the abomasum (where stomach acids might work on it) and there’s nothing in the rumen that will break it down. Baling twines and net wrap should always be removed before the bales are fed, and properly disposed of rather than leaving them in a field or pasture. Cattle often start chewing on a twine and pretty soon they end up having to swallow it. Young cattle almost always chew on twines. One researcher who was studying E. coli in cattle hung baling twines on cables above the bunks in a feedlot because the cattle would chew on the twines and he could get saliva samples from the twines, to test for E. coli. Cattle are very oral; taste is one of the main senses they utilize to learn about their environment, but it gets them in trouble if they lick and chew on things they shouldn’t. They may get lead poisoning from licking old barn paint or old batteries in a junk pile, or may suffer fatal blockage after ingesting plastic objects--or a calf will get plugged up with a hairball after licking hair off a fence where cattle have been rubbing.

Net wrap mixed with hay – from rumen

NET WRAP IS BECOMING A PROBLEM – Cattle didn’t seem to have as many fatal issues when balers used twine rather than net wrap. It’s sometimes possible for a piece of twine to go all the way through a large cow (though it might plug up a calf), whereas a big wad of net wrap can’t make it through. It might also depend on how much twine the cow ate, and whether it breaks apart going through the stomachs. One Montana veterinarian (Dr. Beth Blevins) who has done necropsies on several cows that died after consuming net wrap, says cattle may keep ingesting more pieces of net wrap over time, and it gets all tangled together as a bigger wad, making it even harder for it to pass on through. “Diagnosis is difficult in the 24 | June 2022

living cow because the wad of net wrap would not be detectable with ultrasound. It would look just like part of the rumen contents, mixed in with all the hay and feed,” she says. Dr. Cody Creelman, a veterinarian in Alberta, Can-

NDSU STUDIES Carl Dahlen, Beef Specialist at North Dakota State University, became interested in the net wrap problem ten years ago after the NDSU diagnostic lab necropied a case of acute bloat associated with ingestion of a large wad of net wrap. Dahlen decided to compare various materials to see how well they break down (or not) in the rumen or if they move on through. Six types of material were evaluated: sisal twine, biodegradable plastic twine, three kinds of net wrap, and hay (bromegrass). The hay was a control sample, for comparison. Each of the materials was cut into small pieces, put into nylon bags and placed in the rumen of two forage-fed steers. “The nylon bags would not degrade in the rumen, yet the rumen fluid could come into the bag and bacterial action could occur in the bags,” says Dahlen. After being in the rumen for various times (4 days, 7 days and 14 days) the bags were taken out. “After 14 days in the rumen, none of the 3 types of net wrap or the biodegradable plastic twine samples disappeared. Most of the hay sample was digested and gone, and more than 70% of the sisal twine disappeared,” he says. “We did another study, feeding steers net wrap. One group was fed net wrap until harvest and another group was fed net wrap until 14 days before harvest. That group had 14 days to continue eating, with no new net wrap coming into their rumen. We wanted to see if net wrap might go on through and if the rumen could clear itself of this material, or if this material would still be there after 14 days,” says Dahlen. “We opened those cattle up and there was still net wrap all through the rumen, even in the steers that hadn’t been fed any more net wrap for 14 days. It stayed in there and probably keeps accumulating. The other thing we noticed was that cattle eat all kinds of interesting things. There were rocks, pieces of plastic from the covering of a silage pile, etc.,” he says. Some of the odd things found in cattle rumens have included an old ace bandage and a pair of jeans. “Plastic and other things that block the natural digestion processes can create a blockage on the front end, which would lead to bloat (hindering ability to burp) or block the other end, and the material can’t leave the rumen as readily.” This would create lingering effects like impaction, or weight loss because the rumen is full and the animal can’t eat much. These cattle tend to go off feed, lose weight, and may have diarrhea because only the fluid can get past the blockage.

TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS

Feature ada, says he’s seen instances where pieces of net wrap clump into a tight mass and turn into a very hard lump, almost like a plastic stone. “In many cases these might not cause problems, just sitting in the rumen, but occasionally they can create a blockage,” he says. He tells of one instance in which net wrap was the reason for a herd problem. “This was a producer with a large herd, who was processing bales without removing the wrap. He had a high incidence of free-gas bloat in his cows, and 7 of them had died. I came out to do post-mortems and was scheduled to do 3, but ended up doing only two because we were fairly sure (after those two) what had happened. In both of those post-mortems, I pulled concretions/masses of plastic wrap out of the cow’s esophagus.” These hard balls were floating around in the rumen contents, and when the cow tried to belch, one of those balls lodged in the esophagus and she couldn’t belch. The subsequent gas buildup in the rumen caused fatal bloat.

Net wrap glob taken from cow

“There are three places in the digestive tract where a mass like this might tend to lodge, and one of those places is where the esophagus enters the rumen/reticular groove. In both of the cows I cut open, this is where these masses were lodged,” he explains. That particular producer stopped feeding net wrap with the bales (he started removing all of it before feeding) and the bloat cases immediately halted. “It surprised me that this problem went away that quickly, because I thought it would take a while for something like that to build up,” says Creelman. “There is always some variation in how large or small those pieces might be. It might take some time for the plastic globs to form—maybe weeks or months—in the rumen, but there is no way for the cow to break them down,” he says. “If these masses are really small, the cow can pass them on through and they come out with the manure, but larger ones would have to stay in the rumen. I al26 | June 2022

ways recommend that producers remove the net wrap or twines before feeding big bales,” says Creelman. It can be hard to do this, however, if there’s been moisture on those bales and it’s frozen. Clumps of frozen hay may come off with the net wrap. Dr. John Campbell, Large Animal Clinical Sciences, Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatchewan has seen producers lose cows that ingested net wrap left on bales or chopped up by a processor. “I now believe this is a bigger problem than we thought. A few years ago I did a herd investigation in which a well-managed herd had 6 cows die in two days. The local veterinarian asked me to come, and I was able to necropsy two cows that recently died. The cows were close to calving and in reasonable body condition,” Campbell says. “The rumens were very large and full of feed and I found large amounts of plastic net wrap occluding the outflow. The producer used a bale processor but did not remove net wrap when processing bales. I believe the cows ingested large pieces of net wrap and it may not have become an issue until they were heavily pregnant. Once the fetus got large enough to restrict abdominal space, the rumen became occluded and huge, and these cows died of what appeared to be suffocation.” In other instances, pieces of net wrap may become entangled with all the food material and create a blockage at the exit into the intestine. This creates a slower demise, with the cow losing weight for a period of time. The ingested material may be small amounts of chopped up net wrap, or a large piece left on a bale—or a big piece not chopped up by the processor. “Perhaps the blades are dull, or the net wrap gets wound around them, or sometimes the processor just shoots that wrap out in one big piece and doesn’t chop it up. In this particular instance it was obvious that the processor was not chopping up the wrap,” says Campbell. “The rumens of the cows I opened up were gigantic. It took a lot of time to wade through all the feed material in the rumen to find the net wrap. It would be easy to miss if you weren’t looking for it, even though these were really big wads,” he says. Regarding other materials eaten by cattle, Creelman has seen problems when people utilize forage that grows along roads. “When baling the grass alongside a road, they may also bale up litter that gets tossed from cars and blows over the field or pasture. I had a case in which a cow had been eating hay that was baled near a road, and I pulled out a 30-pound mass from her rumen—a wad of plastic bags and other garbage. The hay-cutting process chops up this litter and then it gets baled, and the cows eat it. It gets broken down a little, but it’s still plastic or twine or other garbage. Producers need to be aware of this possible hazard,” says Creelman. Find more helpful articles regarding the care and feeding of your Longhorns at www.tlbaa.org/trails/trails-archive/

WYOMING LONGHORN BREEDER ASSOCIATION

We lost two friends in 2021. Kenny and Fayne you are dearly missed. We hope to do you proud as we carry on.

MPTLA News Now that winter is finally finished (we hope, CO has had snow in June before, although this year it would not hurt my feelings to get a late snow) we are looking forward to fun show season, new babies and maybe someday we’ll get a little grass in our pastures. I would like everyone to start thinking about NICKY ADAMS the Colorado State Fair. In the past it has always been two separate shows with PRESIDENT different judges on Sunday and then on Monday (Labor Day). The fair has WILDFIRERANCH@ELPASTEL.NET changed our schedule slightly so that both shows (still separate events) will both be on the same day September 4th 2022, one in the am and one in the afternoon. Animals will arrive on Sun the 3rd and have to be out by Tues the 5th. It will be a new experience for us but I’m sure that it will still be a lot of fun. The fair committee is in the planning stages for a new livestock barn in a few years that should be really nice. And as usual, most state fairs have lots to offer. Entry deadline is 1 August 2022 online, they are very strict with the deadline, so don’t delay getting your entries in. We are hoping to have at least one ranch day somewhere here in CO to share info and camaraderie with our Longhorn family. More to come on that. Hopefully everyone has heard about the Double Down Futurity that will happen in Black Forest Colorado on Aug 13th 2022 at Latigo Trails facility. This will be the first time an event like this has been put on where there will be “2” futurities on the same day with “2” sets of judges for each futurity. The good thing about this is that you will only be paying for 1 trip expense, but may benefit with two potential wins. This is open to both TLBAA and ITLA registered animals. Entry deadline is 1 July 2022 and there are multiple sponsor opportunities to be had. We would love to see you here in beautiful Colorado in August!

Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow

Presidents

Message

As the 2021-2022 show season comes to a close this month, I want to thank each and every one of you for supporting me throughout the last 8 years. Being part of the TLBT and TLBAA has been an experience that I will never forget, and I hope to continue to be involved within the association after college. The Texas Longhorn community is one of the most amazing groups that I have ever had the opportunity to be part of, and I know that the best is yet to come. This association has grown so much in the short time I’ve been showing, which provides the breeders of tomorrow with many opportunities to get involved and find success. From banners to scholarships, and everything in between, there is something for everyone to love about Texas Longhorns. Now, with the World Show fast approaching, It is time to get speeches written, photos taken, and cattle ready for an amazing 5 days in Belton. World show not only gives members the opportunity to compete against the best, but also allows us to reflect on the amazing year we have had. Be sure to stay for the banquet on Saturday night where we will give out dozens of awards to many deserving TLBAA and TLBT members. To all the graduating seniorsthank you for everything you have done for our association. You have paved the way for a brighter future for the TLBT members and inspired us all to do our best each and every day. So, let’s get ready for the 35th TLBAA World Show, and let’s go out with a bang! #buildingabettertomorrow For the last time,

SPRING TIME IS A BIG TIME IN COLEMAN, TEXAS DURING THE GREAT WESTERN TRAIL DAYS As the sun set on the final day of the Great Western Trail Days weekend and the longhorns were loaded up and headed home, we can be thankful for the wonderful opportunity to gather and enjoy the spring weekend with families, kids, and cattle. Contestants enjoyed coming to the city of Coleman, Texas, not only for the nearly $14,000 in cash and prizes, but for the wonderful hospitality that they receive from the Coleman businesses. Coleman, Texas proudly hosted a full slate of activities for locals and visitors to enjoy over the Great Western Trail Days four-day weekend. The celebration pays respect to the pioneers, ranchers, and settlers who endured the humble beginnings of this central Texas town. In the mid 1800’s, Coleman was emerging from the frontier as a destination for business and ranching because of its’ convenient location on the crossroads to many larger cities and the landscape offered the desirable grasses and water to raise livestock. Land and opportunity were available for those willing to work it. Back in the 1870’s, the Great Western Trail led many drovers through this frontier area as they pushed thousands of head of longhorn cattle north, stopping at several markets on the Great American Desert as it was called in the 19th century (the area east of the Rockies to approximately the 100th meridian), then continuing on to the northern Great Plains states, with some herds traveling well into Canada. The longhorns are an important part of our American history as the drovers were contracted to help feed the people of the frontier including; military forts, Native Americans, and settlers. As the times changed, barbed wire appeared on the landscape, trains took cattle to markets, and new breeds of cattle were raised and the Texas longhorns were no longer needed. The disappearing longhorns wouldn’t have been saved from near extinction if it weren’t for the forward-thinking folks who 40 | June 2022

stepped up and kept the hearty cattle from only being known in our history books. The Coleman, Tx four-day event started with the Great Western Trail marker dedication in which folks came to pay their respects to those who traveled up the trail and the many who returned to Coleman to build a new life while the tiny frontier community prospered. Many descendants of these cattlemen were on hand to help keep the history alive for future generations to admire. Over the next three days, there were more events for those you cherish the western lifestyle, including a Texas musical event called, “Up the Trail, Under the Stars” with music by rising stars, Ariel Hutchins and Allora Leonard. In addition, Coleman hosted it’s first ever, film festival. “The Western Film Festival” gave producers and actors a chance to display their skills in several categories. Many visitors to the festival found their way out to the Coleman County Expo grounds, where the Texas longhorn shows were being held. Saturday was the start of the third annual Great Western Trail Days longhorn show and it was very well attended by contestants and visitors. The big day started with a TLBAA haltered show, judged by Ryan Holaway and ended with a TLBT youth points show, judged by Blayze Bierschwale. Red River Arenas sponsored the day’s cash premiums and beautiful prizes along with the use of their quality made panels for an amazing show ring and tie-ups for the show cattle. Sunday started with a delicious chuckwagon breakfast made by Hord’s Creek Cowboy Church and was rounded out with some soothing cowboy music and ministry, provided Jeff Gore of Silver Valley, TX. Central Texas Farm Credit proudly sponsored Sunday’s TLBT cash premiums and several prizes for the youth contestants. The TLBT youth show judge was

Corey Sanchez. After two days of showing, the youth points were averaged together for Double Down champions to be awarded gorgeous queen size, plush blankets sponsored by Government Capital Corporation. Youth contestants also had a chance to win one of two Super Prizes based on earning chances throughout the weekend by winning one of the top three placings in the classes. Finally, all the chances were put in a drawing for the Super Prizes. A Boxel Blower and a Boxel Weekender Show Box were won by TJ Danley, Seminole, TX and Sheridan Van Blarcom, Grandview, TX. Both of the Great Western Trail Days TLBT youth shows also had an additional affiliation that is new this year. The “Beyond The Ring Junior Livestock Show Association” had been contacted to co-sanctioned the event for livestock show kids to earn national recognition for showing all kinds of livestock and all kinds of breeds of livestock. This is the inaugural year for this exciting new association and we are glad to see the Texas longhorn youth be a part of it. The weekend was chalked full of things to do, to see, to participate in, or just to watch and enjoy. Coleman has definitely put itself on the Great Western Trail map in a big way for a small town. 2022 Rafter M Round Up Show Was A Success The 2022 Rafter M Round Up had a full house and was a huge success again this year. With the help of our generous sponsors we were able to pay out over $18,000 this year in cash scholarships, cash premiums, cash giveaways, a donation heifer, awards, show prizes, and so much more. Every single youth walked away with money in their pockets. 2021 and 2022 totals combined for over $33,000 in premiums, scholarships, and payouts. We had 4 graduating seniors receive the Deborah Ann Mills Memorial Scholarship, awarded over $700 to the winner of the Youth Herdsman Award, every youth was awarded cash during showmanship for both youth shows, and all of our volunteers helped everyone have a fun weekend and kept the show running smoothly. A big thank you to everyone that came, exhibited, volunteered, sponsored, and made the Rafter M Round Up a big success. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year for the 2023 Rafter M Round Up Show, March 3rd - 5th, 2023.

Contest will be open until December 31st, 2022. Winners will be decided by an independent judge not involved in the contest. Winners will be announced during the Longhorn weekend in January. The winning entry will be featured on the front cover of TRAILS. (If possible, think vertical when snapping the photo) The additional finalists as well as all other entries will be featured elsewhere in the magazine.

Elmer Parker Lifetime Award

Lifetime Devotion to the Texas Longhorn Breed and Its Breeders

The Elmer Parker Lifetime Award honors those members, who have been dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Longhorn breed, qualities that Parker was known for. This award is named after Elmer Parker, who was a longtime employee and manager of the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge Longhorn herd. Parker joined the staff at the Refuge in 1946, learning from the previous Longhorn managers: Earl Drummond, Heck Schrader and Joe Bill Lee. In 1968, he took over the responsibilities of the Longhorns at the Refuge and continued until his retirement in 1981. Thus, the continuity of Longhorn expertise at the Refuge continued for more than half a century. The Parker Brown color designation on Longhorn registrations was named after Elmer Parker – the dark brown, almost black color, with lighter dorsal stripe, was one of his favorite colors.

The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award is given to individuals who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of Texas Longhorn cattle through their breeding program. This award is named after native Texan, Dave Evans, who entered the Texas Longhorn industry in 1977, establishing the Yellow Pine Ranch at Cuchara, CO. He and his wife, Billicarole, quickly became enthusiastic about the breed and additional ranches were purchased to supplement the original ranch. Evans served on the Board of Directors of both the TLBAA and the Mountain & Plains Texas Longhorn Association. He also served terms as TLBAA Vice-President. He was a founding partner and host of the Colorado National Texas Longhorn Sale, a record-breaking event when it started in 1981, which continued to be one of the industry’s major events for many years. From the start, Evans realized the necessity of using the best bulls available in the breed in order to develop a top herd. His goal was to breed for consistent size as well as correctness and outstanding horns. He purchased Texas Ranger Jr. in 1980, and then Dixie Rebel and Major Investment. In 1986, Evans acquired CT Spoty Ruler, the bull he considered to be the best he’d ever owned. Before his untimely death, Evans had succeeded in breeding a herd of Texas Longhorns that were well recognized in the breed. It is therefore a significant honor to be a recipient of this award, named in honor of this dedicated Longhorn breeder.

Attention Show Chairs! Results are published once official results are received and verified as correct in the HORNS show management system. Please submit your official results to the TLBAA office as soon as possible to avoid a delay in being published in Trails Magazine and to ensure points are kept current. Please feel Non-Haltered to submit champion/Reserve Champion photos as well. Candids may be submitted to myra@tlbaa.org and may be used based on space available.

How Can I Get My Child Started Showing Longhorns? STEP 1 Unlike most other forms of showing livestock, showing Registered Texas Longhorns does not require a youth to own the animal that it shows. In order to prepare your child to walk into the show ring, first that child must be a junior member of the TLBAA. Parents are not required to be members unless they choose to become Longhorn owners and be a part of the whole Longhorn experience.

STEP 2 Find a TLBAA Affiliate in your area. You can find a list of affiliates and their contacts on www.tlbaa.org. You may also look at the schedule of events page in the back of Trails Magazine or the calendar tab on the website to find a show near you to visit and meet Longhorn members.

STEP 3 Many breeders have animals that they would love to allow a youth to show. It may be possible for you to arrange to work with a breeder who shows and see if arrangements can be made for your child to learn from them and get their first show experience working with someone already familiar with the experience.

If you already own your own Longhorns, there are camps and workshops you can attend, or maybe some private one-on-one with a Longhorn show person, to show you the ropes of halter breaking and working with your animal. If you are fortunate enough to purchase a halter-broken animal, maybe even one that has already shown, then talk to someone to understand the process of entering and attending a show to be prepared to make your debut.

STEP 4 Take advantage of information in Trails Magazine, www.tlbaa.org, affiliate activities and showmanship camps to broaden your knowledge and gain experience. Try to enter as many shows as you can, even if you don’t think you are doing well. Nothing can be done well without learning and practice.

STEP 5 During all the steps above and beyond, have fun! Enjoy making new friends and watching your child build character, learn life lessons and develop skills that will help them throughout the rest of their life! Aim for the trophies but focus on the rewards of the journey.
