About the Cover: Nature can always paint more splendor than any artist might envision. Texas Longhorn breeders are blessed each spring and summer with the magnificent beauty of robust and colorful calves; life renewed and the promise of grand things to come. This month’s cover photo brings a close-up of a young heifer calf at Pearl Longhorn Ranch, owned by Allen & Suzanne Perry. With her horns just “budding” out and a face that can melt any heart – a striking reminder of nature’s treasures. (photo by Suzanne Perry)

From the Chairman of the Board The Bright Futures Scholarship Fund was established by the TLBAA in 2011. It was set up to be administered under the unbrella of the TLBAA Foundation as a part of the Foundation’s education mission. The fund currently awards scholarships of $1500 each annually to high school graduating senior members of the Texas Longhorn Breeders Of Tomorrow who are qualified by the fund trustees. Please refer to the TLBT on the TLBAA website - www.tlbaa.org. The TLBAA Board of Directors have voted to support this scholarship fund by donating any profits from the upcoming World Show, June 10-14, 2012, to the Bright Futures Scholarship Fund. Please help us support the TLBT and the scholarship fund by becoming a sponsor at some level. Nothing we do as an association is more important that participating in the education of our youth. Last year, all seven scholarship applicants, who submitted complete applications, were awarded a scholarship. This month the Board of Directors Bio page highlights L.D. McIntyre, Region 13 Director, and Ron Walker, Region 1 Director. Take a look at page 36. Thank you for your dedication to and support of the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America. May God bless you, the TLBAA and the USA.

A special Thank You to Mike & Debbie Bowman for their generous contribution to the youth! During the 2012 Midwest Sale, the Bright Futures Scholarship Fund received a generous sum of money from a donation lot. Mike and Debbie Bowman donated a 2011 bull in the memory of Dr. Joseph Graham to start off the sale. When the gavel dropped, the bull fetched $8,000 and the proud owner was Cynthia Graham of Mi Tierra Ranch. Generous donations were also collected from the audience, and the grand total of $18,000 will be going to the scholarship fund.

We also extend a special thanks to these donors:

Dear TLBT Members,

It’s hard to believe that June is already here, and a new show season will start soon. This will be my last letter to write, and it is my hope that the next show season will bring more rain and be a prosperous year for everyone. Congratulations on all your success this year in and out of the show ring and good luck to you at the 2012 TLBT World Show! Serving as your 2011-2012 TLBT President has been a great honor, and I would like to thank all those who have made it a wonderful and memorable year. I have enjoyed working with the 2011-2012 TLBT Board of Directors and appreciate their dedication. They are a great group of people, and I hope to see them again in the future. The TLBT is an organization that has so many positive things about it. Everyone is like one big family, always helping each other out and willing to welcome new breeders. I have learned so much about the Texas Longhorn and their history while showing and I already have so many fond memories of the years I have been a part of this organization. This will not be my last year to be a part of the TLBT. I will still be around for a couple more years, and I look forward to seeing everyone at the TLBT Office: TLBT Treasurer shows and sales. Age: 18 years old I would like to thank this year’s TLBT youth advisors for helping School: Home School us get through our meetings and all the support they have given us. If Number of Years in the TLBT: you see Trigg & Traci Moore, Steve & Bodie Quary, Danny & Carole 7 years Phillips or Steven Zunker please thank them and show them your When and how did you start raising and showing Texas appreciation. Also, a big thank you Dora Thompson, Kim Richey and Longhorns? Tina DuBose for all the fundraising they have done to make this World My family and I started raising Longhorns in 2005. Our first Longhorn Show a success. Two more people that I want to thank for all their help show was at the TLBGCA Spring show in 2006. There I won my first calf through the calf drawing. I named him “Texas S Rusty Spur”. I and commitment to the TLBT, is my parents. They have spent countless showed Rusty for a year, and I have been hooked to showing ever since. hours working on TLBT projects, and I would not have been able to do it without them. about the history of the Texas Longhorn. Taking care of the animals has been a great responsibility that has taught me many great work ethics. I have learned to keep accurate records of my show calves. This makes me realize that the cost of raising an animal takes a lot of money, but the experience is well worth the time and money.

What would you tell someone just getting started in raising Texas Longhorns? If someone is new to raising Texas Longhorns, I would tell them that they picked a good breed of cattle to raise. They are beautiful to look at in the pasture. The breeders in this organization are always willing to give advice if needed. The youth are given so many opportunities through showing cattle in the TLBT. They can win buckles, banners, scholarship money, and many different other items.

What is your favorite part of raising and showing Texas Longhorns? My favorite part about showing Longhorns is the friends you have the opportunity to make at all of the shows. There is always someone around willing to give a helping hand when you need it. I have enjoyed winning many championships, but the best part is being able to meet new friends. The breeders are very supportive of the youth and have helped my experience in the TLBT organization become a memory I will never forget.

Texas Longhorn Trails

FREE CATTLE Joel Lemley Joel and Shirley Lemley began raising Texas Longhorn cattle in 1995 on their ranch near Blackwell, Texas. They had sold most of their commercial cattle in order to ride out a serious drought, but allowed a friend to use their sparse grazing for a few head of Longhorns.

By Henry King A knowledgeable cadre of judges has been chosen to evaluate the various classes at this premier annual event. Each judge brings mud-onthe-boots experience combined with the practiced discernment every exhibitor appreciates. This brief look will introduce you to these influential officials and give a brief overview of their background and what they look for in the classes they will judge. October 2011

“We just fell in love with these cattle – the way they pastured, the way they grazed, the way they took care of themselves – and it kind of got us more interested in these cows and we got involved with Longhorn cattle. We still, today, run commercial cattle – last year was a terrible year, obviously – we keep our registered herd separate from the commercial herd. We are involved in livestock a lot of different ways, but we enjoy our cattle and we certainly enjoy our registered Texas Longhorns.” Before getting his first Longhorns, Joel had been involved in the auction business; Shirley retired from AT&T in 1999 and they had a little more time to work with the cattle. They got involved with the TLBAA and affiliates, and Joel served on a few boards in South Texas and North Texas. Joel was asked to chair the Horn Showcase in 2002, and the first Horn Showcase Sale, which he did for about four years. He was asked to serve, and got elected to, the Board of Directors in 2001 and stayed there until 2007, he also had the opportunity to be Chairman of the Board for a period of time. “I had the opportunity to spend a little time and be involved in the things we did, not only in the affiliates, but on the national level. I’ve also had the opportunity to be involved in auctioning a number of Longhorn sales across the country, and starting six or seven years ago, being asked to judge some of these shows, which was kind of an honor to be asked. Somebody appreciated my opinion, which is all that judging really is – one’s opinion for that particular day.” “I have always looked at these cows for

the total package – not just horns – although I have always been interested in length of horn and the type of horns that are available. That’s from being a part of the Horn Showcase for so many years. But you can’t have a lot of horns without being an all-around solid cow with good milk and bag, color, size, structure and good conformation. Those things come from the select breeding of the right bull to the right female.” “When I am judging females, I’m looking for the production qualities they currently have and watch them grow into mature animals and see a lot of the traits you are judging on are those that can be passed on to their progeny.” “Bulls are basically the same way. I look at the same things any other livestock judge would look at – that’s going to be bone and quality and length and size and the way that the exhibitors have brought these cattle in to be exhibited.”

YOUTH Stan Comer Stan Comer, the current president of the Chianina association, ranches near Ardmore, Oklahoma. He grew up in Illinois on a grain and livestock farm, got his degree in Animal Science from Oklahoma State University and has been at his Oklahoma location since 1987. Stan and his wife have two grown sons, both of whom showed cattle while growing up. One is now a pharmaceutical rep covering the state of Oklahoma; the younger son is the sale and show cattle manager at Bushy Park Farms in South Dakota. “We’ve been in the registered cattle business about 30 years now,” Stan observed. “I got started judging Longhorn cat-

tle probably eight to ten years ago. I have enjoyed the Longhorn breeders as well as the cattle and had the opportunity to judge both the World Open show and the Youth show previously. I have been fortunate to judge beef cattle shows in fourteen states.” Stan says his philosophy in evaluating cattle is essentially basic to every breed. “You start at the ground up, make sure

25

they’ve got good foot and leg structure to support the animal; one that can get out and go and forage and have a lot of longevity in the herd. Then we kind of move on up and, starting at the front in females, look for extension and femininity in their neck and head; certainly, when we are talking about Longhorn cattle, look for breed character, and one of the economic traits of the Longhorn is the horn. We look for one that has good horn development and can add some value to the animal from the horn as well as the structure and balance and beef they produce. I like for them to have a strong, straight top, one that is phenotypically superior; some slope from hooks to pin, and one that, when you get behind them, has a good, wide stance. Certainly, I like one that has depth of body and width through the center of the body for foraging ability.” “In females, a calf at side we would certainly take into consideration as well as the quality and structure of the udder in order to raise a calf.” “In bulls, we like the masculine look up about the head and neck and shoulders, with natural muscling down their top and through the center of their quarter when you view them from behind. You want one that can get out and move, is very sound in their movements; and has good testicular development.” “Those are the basic things I am looking for when evaluating Longhorn cattle, but there are a couple of pointers I’d like to give the kids in advance. Number one, a lot of calves that show have never had their feet trimmed – and need them trimmed if you are going to the time and trouble of exhibiting. The other thing is, those that do get their feet trimmed, it seems like they are pretty fresh – like the day before the show and that causes a lot of problems for some of those calves because it is the first time they have had their feet trimmed and a lot of times they can be a little tender or sore on those feet from that foot trim. That is unfortunate for that animal, because it doesn’t show their true potential for their stride and getting out and moving.” “I would certainly encourage the kids to get the feet trimmed on the calves and get them on a scheduled foot trimming, and do it three weeks or more before a major show like the World Show. That gives the calf time to heal up and get their feet hardened.” That is a good thought that applies to cattle of all ages – bulls, cows and steers – that need to be moving their best when the judge looks their way.

OPEN Justin Hansard Justin Hansard lives just west of Nocona, Texas where he serves as County Extension Agent for Montague County. He and his wife, Melanie, have two children: daughter Kinley, 13, and son Kooper, 7. The kids both show swine, his daughter shows cattle and both of them show horses. “We don’t have much of an opportunity to slow down. We are in sports or shows somewhere every weekend or week night it seems like.” “I’ve been judging Longhorn shows about eight years or so; I first got started up in Colorado when one of the judges in an open show couldn’t make it and I was asked to jump in. I drove up there and got a taste of it and kind of went from there. Since then I have judged everything from

the Colorado State fair, New Mexico State Fair, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma – I’ve judged most of the states around us for the most part.” “What I’m looking for in the Longhorn breed is, of course, I like the structure on my cattle to be correct. I like them to have a good body design, not be too moderate in size, not be too large in their size – somewhere in between. Have good horn growth – base is important. Females need to look like females and bulls need to look like bulls. We’ll work the criteria back and forth to fit the class the best we can line it up for that day.” “I like the more modern kind of Longhorn. I got into this about eight years ago and never got into the original side of raising them strictly for the horn. We’ve got to put some body into these cattle and some look to these cattle, but make them functional in their own right – make them cattle that can have calves for you year in and year out.” “When I first started with Longhorns eight years ago, I didn’t know how far it would take me or how far I would progress in the breed, but the people that I’ve talked to and visited with have been just ex-

tremely friendly. When I judge a show, they come up afterwards and thank me for judging; taking time to evaluate their cattle and talk to the kids. Just overall, I’ve had a good relationship with breeders that would come up and introduce themselves and I’d get to visit with them; I’d get to learn the breed a little bit more. It has been an enjoyable experience all the way around.”

TROPHY STEERS Donnie Taylor Besides working with cattle, Taylor has 31 years with the Union Pacific railroad as a heavy equipment operator. He lives in deep East Texas in the Lufkin area, about a hundred miles northeast of Houston. “We’ve had longhorns in our family since I’ve been big enough to walk. My grand-daddy; he used them to plow with; he made his own yokes for his ox. I guess I led my first one when I was three or four years old while my granddaddy handled the plow.” “We had them in my family until I was about18 years old and I graduated high school and moved out to go to school and go to work and he sold out. I got back into the longhorn business in 1997; got into the registered end of it – a cow and calf operation. Just fell in love with them.” “To judge these big old steers, he’s got to have the traditional look for me; a big-chested steer, kind of small back end, a lot of color and a lot of horn. These newer, more modern Longhorn steers don’t really do a lot for me. They are so fat and bulky; they are not a traditional Longhorn steer. I want horn, color and conformation. He’s got to be able to walk four or five miles to get a drink of water, and that’s real important. Hooves need to be short so he can travel. I don’t like a lot of dewlap; I want him clean underneath.” “I’ve never judged a show per se, but I have judged a lot of cattle, looking at them them on their merits and qualities. I’ve judged a couple of futurities for each animal to stand on its own merits and I look at them similar to what I do in a steer – I look for the dollar value in an animal. In the Longhorn business that fat cow doesn’t have a lot of business out there. They’ve got Texas Longhorn Trails

to have a moderate frame and a lot of horn and a lot of color to be real valuable. The shorter-horned cattle in today’s market, with the economic path that we have, there’s not a lot of call for them unless you’re in the commercial business. These commercial breeders, they love a Longhorn cow to put a big ol’ black bull or a Charolais bull. That ease of calving is a big thing.”

Bobby Dube “I’ve been dealing with these Longhorns for over 30 years,” Bobby Dube reflected. “I worked for John T.L. Jones when he bought some from Red McCombs – he and Red were friends and he bought some from Red to start with, then later he bought some cattle from Darol Dickinson. That got me interested in it, then we got to showing them a little bit when we first started having the shows. We had a good deal of success – we had that Bail Jumper bull that was real popular. That’s how I got started in the Longhorn deal.” After Dube quit working for Jones, he went to work for himself. He bought a little set of Longhorns and started raising them. He then started helping other people who had bought Longhorns – as a consultant, fitter or exhibitor -- whatever the owner might want to do with them. ”A lot of people that have bought Longhorns don’t have much experience with cattle,” Dube said, “so I try to help them a little bit. When somebody in his area has a problem with Longhorns, they call me.” “Then, of course, I started building the chute in about 2000 – ten or twelve years ago I designed that Longhorn chute, and that has been a pretty good success for me. We’ve got a lot of those things that people are using now – maybe 200 of them that we built and sold. That worked pretty good for me – I kind of make my living with Longhorn cows.” “People buy the chutes by word of mouth – I don’t push the issue and I don’t go into big production. I don’t like to get too many of them made and have a lot of money tied up in inventory, but we do keep a few in case somebody calls. I also build a smaller, lighter chute for people that can’t afford to buy the top of the line.” “My thought on judging trophy steers,” Dube opined, “is about the same as it would be on judging any kind of Longhorns. First thing – they are beef cattle – so June 2012

they’ve got to have conformation and a little size to them. Something that’s important to me, and it should be to all breeders, is the shape and size of the horns. The last thing I look for – but it IS important to me – is the color.” “What I try to do when judging is evaluate those three things – the conformation, the color and the horn – give them all a score. And that’s how I come up with the one I like the best. It’s a pretty simple thing to do if you look at all those traits.” A lot of people might place a cow on the basis of what she is worth, but Bobby Dube doesn’t agree with that. “You could have a cow with an eighty-inch horn that doesn’t have conformation or color, and she may be worth a lot more money than some of the other cows, but she is not functional. She can’t raise a calf and doesn’t look pretty – she’s got big horns, but that’s not totally what I am looking for.” “Steers are a different program. You don’t look for breeding ability there, but you do look for the conformation and the structure, the way they travel – and you sure want one that’s big enough.” There’s no doubt Bobby Dube has an eye for Texas Longhorn steers – his steer, Buckaroo, was grand champion of the 2007 (?) World Show. Now trained as a riding steer, Buckaroo is slated to provide some Texas ambience when a segment of America’s Got Talent, filmed in Austin, hits the airwaves. Bob was filmed riding Buckaroo in a promotional parade, and the judge of the talent show was also pictured on the big steer.

Tracy Krueger Tracy Krueger has developed a phenomenally successful Texas Longhorn youth exhibitor program through the auspices of the FFA at Ferris Independent School District, Ferris, Texas. Many of her students are in college or headed for college because of the scholarships earned in Texas Longhorn competitions. Tracy grew up in a farm family, working with crops and livestock. She and he brother earned their school money planting crops on the family’s 12,000-acre farm/ranch, which also included a cow/calf operation. ”We were probably among the last few kids to be able to say we did that,” Tracy said, “and it was a really neat experience.” Tracy went to Texas A&M where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Agricultural

Education. After teaching five years, she returned to college, receiving a master’s degree at East Texas State University. She took a year off to have her daughter, Hannah, and then went to LSU to earn her doctorate in Agricultural and Vocational Education. Her masters and doctorate degrees also include minors in animal science. Before beginning her eight years at Ferris, she taught at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Tennessee, thinking she wanted to be an Ag teacher trainer. While at the University of Tennessee, where she worked in Extension, she was asked to finish out a school year teaching high school agriculture in the community where she lived – and she realized she had found her calling. “I think teachers are called, just like preachers are called,” she said, “and I just knew I was supposed to be in a classroom with these kids and I haven’t regretted a second of it.” Having shown cattle herself while growing up, Tracy wanted her own children to have that experience, so they started showing Texas Longhorns in 1998. Coming from a more traditional beef background, she kept the same things in mind that would apply with Limousins, Shorthorns, Angus – “The structural issues are the same,” she said. “You read the breed guidelines and learn about horn measurement, color patterns and that sort of thing. Over the course of a couple of years we started being very competitive with the showing end of it and raising cattle that would be the most profitable. But to go from more traditional beef cattle or commercial beef cattle to something like Longhorns, you have to study, you have to learn – it IS apples and oranges. You have to learn to respect the breed for what it is, why it is what it is, why they were able to survive and why they are the genetic goldmine that they are.” “Since we have been showing, most people will agree, we have had a tremendous amount of success – not just with my own children, but with my show kids at school – especially with steers. I think there hasn’t been a year over the last nine or ten years that we haven’t had a champion trophy steer, so it was very flattering when Lana asked me to judge this because we seem to have really found our niche raising trophy steers, being able to compete and win with them.”

About 85 people from Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia attended the 2012 Longhorn Ranch Sale and Social at the Fey Ranch in Yamhill, Oregon on April 14th. It turned out to be a fun day with sunny skies, good food (Longhorn Chili), an educational seminar about “Breeding For The Complete Package” and vendors presenting artwork and livestock equipment. Last but not least sale attendees enjoyed a silent auction in a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of time to take a close look at the sale cattle and to get to know other Longhorns folks. The sale resulted in a total volume of over $40,000 with 23 heifers and cows changing hands. Several new breeders took some good breeding stock home. A 2010 JP Rio Grande granddaughter “Casino’s Ace” (Fey’s Rio Casino x Demanding Woman) was the high seller and was purchased for $9,000 by Alexandra Dees, CR Ranches in Harper, OR. The sale average was $1,744.

Division C Region 13 Director - L.D. McIntyre BIRTH DATE & PLACE: 1951, Central Nebraska RESIDENCE & RANCH LOCATION: Wolbach, Nebraska OCCUPATION: Rancher BUSINESS / VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE: I attended College in Nebraska and then went home to help at the ranch. While engaged with the ranch, my path took me through many stops mainly in the cattle business. In the 80’s and 90’s while running cattle in Texas and Oklahoma, I obtained my Texas Real Estate Lic. and was successful buying, re-zoning, platting and re-selling property in the Denton, and North Dallas, Tx. area. I also personally founded and ran a small oil company. We drilled and produced just over 100 wells in Oklahoma and Texas. The depths ran from 1,200 to 6,500 ft. The last 9 wells were some of the first in South Texas around Pearsall, TX to use horizontal drilling. We packaged our holdings, and in 1990 sold our production to a company from Holland. HOW LONG RAISING LONGHORNS: Started raising Longhorns in 2005. MEMBER OF TLBAA SINCE: 2005 ELECTED TO BOD: 2012 REASON FOR SERVING ON BOD: I see great promise in this breed and look forward to doing my part to make a SOUND TLBAA for the future. REMARKS: My wife was born and raised in Weatherford, Texas. Her family are 5 generations Weatherford, TX. In 2005 our immediate family added a few Texas Longhorns. This gives us much pleasure. We have been working hard on the niche "LEAN BEEF" outlet for the cattle.

Texas Longhorn Trails

Use Body Condition as a ManageMent tool By Heather Smith Thomas Body condition of cows determines whether they give birth to strong, healthy calves, and rebreed on schedule. Keeping track of body condition can help a rancher determine the nutritional needs of cows through winter and spring until they are safely rebred. Body condition score is rated 1 to 9, with 1 denoting emaciation and 9 obese. Most stockmen try to keep cows at body score 5 to 6, for best health and fertility. Some cows (and some breeds) need more flesh than others to cycle and breed successfully. Some crossbred cows, because of their hybrid vigor and increased fertility, will breed successfully at body score 4. Cows that give a lot of milk may be thinner at weaning time than cows who give less milk. A heavy milking cow may go into winter carrying less flesh than the poorer milking cow and needs a higher level of winter nutrition to get ready for her next calving. In dry years it may be hard for cows to milk very well and raise a good calf without losing weight. A good practice is to sort out the young ones, such as yearlings, first and second calvers, to feed separately from the older cows. If cows are on hay or being given a supplement, this will ensure the young ones get their share. When the whole herd is together the young cows do not get enough--since they eat more slowly and are more timid than mature cows. The older cows may dominate them and keep them away from the feed. It is not cost efficient to feed the whole herd to meet the needs of young and thin ones; most cows don't need the extra feed or supplement. Keep first and second calvers separate after calving also; this is when they need pampering the most, in order to milk, keep growing and breed back. They need better hay or extra protein that mature cows can get by without. The same goes for older thin cows. You don't want to perpetuate genetics of cows that need a lot of expensive feed, but it does pay to pamper thinner older cows you will be selling. Then they can hold their flesh and do justice to their last calf--and be sold more advantageously the coming fall. Closely monitor condition of all cows; then if some start to lose weight there's time to correct it by feeding hay to augment dwindling, dried up or snowed under pastures, or to increase the hay if weather turns cold. A cow needs more roughage in cold weather. Digestion of cellulose creates heat. If she doesn't have enough roughage, her weight will melt off as she robs body fat to create energy to keep warm. Nutrition during the first 90 days after calving determines whether the cow will start cycling and rebreed. It's hard to get cows to gain weight after they calve; energy requirements increase 17 to 50% depending on how much milk they produce. Inadequate feed may lower the weaning weights of calves 20 to 50 pounds and reduce conception rates of cows as much as 25%. A really thin cow (body score 3 or less) nursing a calf may not start cycling at all. A study in South Dakota showed cows with higher body condition scores return to heat earlier in the season and are more likely to settle. The two most critical periods are 30-50 days before calving when the fetus is growing fastest, and 60-100 days after calving--until the cow is rebred. Make sure cows go through winter in adequate flesh without losing weight before calving.

By Henry King

he Fort Worth Herd was formed in 1999 to celebrate the city’s 150th birthday. Fifteen steers, representing the fifteen decades, paraded from Sundance Square downtown, north on Main Street to the Historic Stockyards District. The impact of the Herd was so spectacular that it has become a permanent fixture of the Stockyards. Twice-daily cattle drives and related educational offerings have now become a dynamic tourist attraction. The Herd is a spectacular unit comprise of sixteen (another decade, another steer) unique individuals, each unique in appearance and each a unique personality. This series of articles will spotlight the individual big-horned steers -- each so alike as a breed, yet each distinct as a personality. urricane Ivan brought great devastation to the Gulf Coast – and three steers to the Fort Worth Herd. The 2004 weather monster – the tenth most intense Atlantic hurricane on record – after wreaking havoc across the Caribbean, made its U.S. landfall in Alabama and northwestern Florida around 2:00 a.m. on September 16. Ivan maintained hurricane strength inland over Alabama, weakening as it moved into Virginia on September 18. As a remnant low pressure disturbance, it moved offshore on the mid-Atlantic coast; there it regained some strength and looped southward, crossed the Florida peninsula and continued out into the Gulf of Mexico. Ivan finally dissipated September 24 as it moved overland into Texas. Pensacola, Florida, on the coast in the far western panhandle of that state, was among the first U.S. locations struck when Ivan made landfall. Extremely heavy damage resulted, including complete destruction of some subdivisions. Shortly after Hurricane Ivan, Kristin Jaworski, Trail Boss of the Fort Worth Herd, received a call from Ed Shehee, whose Sidewinder Cattle Company operates out of Pensacola. “Our pastures have been hit by a hurricane,” he said, “and they are under saltwater. I’ve got three steers that need a home. Are you interested?”

42

Of course, Kristin was interested, and Pensacola would be a great trip but a long way to drive. “We ended up meeting half way,” she said. “We met in Beaumont, Texas.” “I had never seen the steers,” Kristin continued, “and the first one was pretty poor looking. We called him VR. The second one was Frosty, which we still have, and the third was Preacher.” “They had all seen better days – they were snotty, they were really poor and Preacher was blind in one eye; their feet needed to be trimmed – so they were kind of our rescue project. I took all three of them, and Frosty was immediately the boss; Frosty changed the dynamic of the Fort Worth Herd.” “Preacher was the most easy-going steer. We didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to him, he was that easy-going and he has been that way since day one.” Of the three steers that Ed Shehee donated in 2004, VR is deceased, Frosty is still with the Herd, and Preacher, who has acquired the nickname of ‘Grandpa’ is being retired. “Preacher is being adopted,” said Kristin, “and since his name is ‘Preacher,’ it is very appropriate that he is going to live at Cow Camp Cowboy Church in Weatherford, Texas. They want him to become part of Cowboy Church where he can be cared for and revered as a symbol

of the Old West.” “I love that! I love that that’s the reason they wanted him. He will be on acreage pasture; he will be rotated, have plenty of grass and tree coverage and shade where he will live the rest of his life. He served us well, so it is important that he found a good home.” While Preacher is transferring to a different job site, his job description will remain virtually intact. Instead of attracting attention to the city of Fort Worth through his twice-a-day mosey down Exchange Avenue, he will attract attention to the Cow Camp Cowboy Church by his picturesque presence in the church pasture along Interstate Highway 20. Kristin is very appreciative of people who adopt the steers. “It is really a lot to ask of people,” she observed. “You don’t really know how much longer the steers will live; you don’t know if they are going to need special feed and vet care – you can’t predict that. But these people basically agree to take care of them until they live out their natural life.” “It is very generous of the donor who gave them to us as well as the family that adopts the animal from the Herd program. It is a good match all the way around.” “I get to deal with a lot of good folks coming and going!” Texas Longhorn Trails

NEWS On the Trail... Henderson County Show Crowns Grand & Reserve Grand Champion Longhorn Females

Submitted by Amy Weatherholz, Blossom Ridge Ranch Fourteen year old, Haley Calhoun of Athens, Texas started a new trend at the 52nd Henderson County Livestock Show during the second week of April. Haley exhibited three Longhorn heifers at the show; this was a first in the shows history to have Longhorns on exhibit. She won Grand and Reserve Champion Longhorn, along with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd. During the show, Haley became quite the Longhorn ambassador answering questions from spectators and held brief informational and petting sessions with preschool kids. Haley is a remarkable kid and can spend hours in the pasture with the Longhorns and says, “I love Longhorns, and I plan to own a Longhorn ranch.” Haley is a big sister to Savanah and Emily (future Longhorn showers) and lives on Blossom Ridge Ranch. She is also co-captain of the Cross Roads High School color guard, secretary of Chandler 4-H and vice-president of the youth division of the ETLA Affiliate.

Canadian National Longhorn Show-July 21, 2012 "Consider taking a break this summer and coming north and checking out our national show. We have worked to ensure sponsorships are in place to make it well worth your time, expense and effort to travel north! It is a loose show, only yearling bulls and two year old bulls are shown on halter. Red Deer is a beautiful city to visit, the fair grounds easy to access, with good trailer parking and great accommodations available. Besides the show, there will be many other activities happening at Westerner Days, entertainment for every member of the family... hope you will consider coming north in July!! We are aiming for 100+ entries, so help make the celebration international!" - Deb Lesyk, TLBAA Affiliate Committee

Regulations for Registering Miniature Longhorns with the TLBAA 1) All Miniature Texas Longhorns (MTL) must be descended from registered standard-sized Texas Longhorns 2) Until a sufficient pool of registered stock has been established, all MTLs submitted for registration or reclassification must pass visual inspection and/or other genetic tests as needed to prove purity and/or parentage. a) The burden of proof rests on the member applying for application and all required tests will be paid for at said member’s expense. b) Visual inspection will be based on photographs. · Two to three photographs must be submitted for each animal, depending upon age. o Front with the animal standing directly infront of the camera with the hindquarters in line with the head (required for all ages) o Side with the animal looking straight ahead and not at the camera (required for all ages) o Side with the animal looking directly at the camera (required for animals 5 years of age and older) o Photos of both the sire and dam are required for all animals that are being registered or reclassified that are under one year of age. · Only one photo is required of each (sire and the dam) and should show the side of the animal with the animal looking directly at the camera · Visual appraisal to include inspection for: evidence of hump, horn shape and length (mature cattle only ≥ 5 years of age), evidence of dwarfism and recognized color patterns o Animals must be at least 6 months old before they are eligible for registration or reclassification as MTLs.

June 2012

o There is no age restriction on registering MTLs if both the sire and dam are registered as MTLs. o There is no review required for animals being registered as MTLs, if both the sire and dam are registered as MTLs 3) All MTLs currently registered with the TLBAA will have two registration options: a) Retain current registration papers, forfeiting rights to participation in association sanctioned MTL activities o These animals may not be advertised as “TLBAA registered Miniature Texas Longhorns,” they may only be advertised as “TLBAA registered Texas Longhorns.” b) Submit animals for reclassification as a MTLs, contingent upon passing inspection as per paragraph 2b, retaining the right to participation in all association sanctioned MTL activities. o Only animals in the MTL registry may be advertised as “TLBAA registered Miniature Texas Longhorns. o Only those animals registered with the MTL registry will be eligible for association sanctioned miniature cattle exhibitions. 4) Registering animals as MTLs a) An MTL application along with a registration application must be submitted when registering animals having neither or only one registered MTL parent and the animal must pass inspection before the application will be processed. b) When registering animals that have both their sire and dam in the MTL registry, only the registration application is required and the animals do not need to pass inspection before the application will be processed.

5) Cattle registered with another Texas Longhorn registry (e.g. ITLA or CTLR) must first be brought into the TLBAA Standard Texas Longhorn registry before an application may be submitted to re-classify the animal as a MTL. 6) Bulls that have been Artificial Insemination (AI) Certified within the standard TLBAA or ITLA registries are not eligible for reclassification as MTLs. 7) Once an animal is accepted for registration or reclassification as a MTL, its registration number will be marked with an “M” and a new registration certificate will be issued on blue parchment to differentiate the MTL registration certificates from the standard registration certificates. a) All offspring conceived after the reclassification date must be registered as MTLs and will not be eligible for standard registration, regardless of physical size. b) Animals descended from miniature stock but not meeting the size requirements will be considered “Breeding Stock” Miniatures. These animals will be eligible for registration as will their offspring, however they will not be eligible for any competition or exhibitions sanctioned by the association. o “Breeding Stock” MTLs will not be separated within the registry and it will be the member’s responsibility not to enter them in competitions or exhibitions sanctioned by the association. o “Breeding Stock” MTLs must be advertised with the “Breeding Stock” designation. 8) Any animal of standard size ancestry is eligible for MTL status (except AI Certified bulls) if it passes all required inspections and tests. REGISTRATION “MATTERS”! By Rick Fritsche Promotional Memberships! Several years ago your board of directors voted to create a new membership category: Promotional! The basic idea was for a TLBAA breeder to “sponsor” a nonmember, first time Longhorn buyer when they purchased a registered Longhorn from them. This applied to only adult, non-member first time Longhorn buyers and not “juniors” and a person could only receive one “promotional” membership. All regular membership benefits would apply such as receiving Trails Magazine and member pricing for shows and registrations. It was hoped that the benefits of the “free” membership would be: 1) Increase interest in the Longhorn breed. 2) Increase interest in TLBAA. 3) Increase membership dollars and totals as the Promotional member would have to renew when the promotional membership expired. It was also hoped that the sponsoring breeder would take the new breeder under their wing and offer them their Longhorn knowledge, experience and expertise, involving them in all Longhorn and TLBAA related activities. You can sponsor a Promotional Member and still register or transfer a registered Longhorn to them using HORNS. The only difference is you have to call or email staff first with the new promotional member’s name, address, telephone and/or email information and staff will assign them a member number for you to use! Simple! Don’t forget to use those Pesky Prefixes in registration numbers if mailing in registrations and transfers!

TEXAS LONGHORN AUSTRALIA John Bastardi,, President 02 - 6734 5320 Our February committee meeting was held at “Coolamon” Deepwater. The meeting had been set down to be held at Greg Morris’ “Cambooya” Boomi, however with all the floods in the west, the meeting was moved at the last minute. It was great to see so many of the committee able to attend. I would like to thank all for their efforts. The main topic we discussed was the June sale at Gunnedah. We already have entries of very good cattle. The first group of registrations have been completed, The Texas Longhorn Australia Inc Registry is a reality. It has been a lot of work for Geoff, I thank him for it. I encourage all members to register their cattle; this is history making time in Australia for Texas Longhorn breeders. In February, Jan and I had a visit from Jeff Jespersen from Stony Plain, which is just outside of Edmonton Alberta Canada. Jeff is a Texas Longhorn breeder and has just bought a young Hunts Command Respect bull plus some females off Doug Hunt, Utah in U.S.A. It will be interesting to see how the bull turns out. We always like having International Longhorn breeder come to visit, as we can swap ideas, etc. In March, Jan and I took a trip down to Canberra, while there I was able to visit with Cory Miles and Alison Irwin at Murrumbateman to look at their Longhorn herd. They have a fair number of steers [Steer Wrestling and Roping] plus a very impressive cow and heifer herd. It was great to spend the afternoon with them. Unfortunately, our plans to visit Gareth, Shondelle and Tully Price-Jones to help with the branding and view their Longhorn herd was not possible because of flooding in the Goulburn Crookwell area. On our way home, we spent the day and night with Julie Brown and Don Constable at Galong, looking at their impressive herd of Longhorn females. Next Stop was to spend the afternoon and night with Geoff and Belinda Dawson at Gunnedah, more impressive Longhorns. I was pleased to see ‘Gold Medal’, as I bred him and sold him to Geoff at 8 months old. He has great horn growth and his calves are of a high standard with plenty of color. This has been a very interesting trip and is very encouraging to see the standard of Longhorns. In the future, I would like to visit all Australian Longhorn breeders. I encourage comments, questions and ideas, as we are committed to supporting the growth of Texas Longhorns in Australia, through the importation of elite genetics. Keep sending in your photos for colorful calf and my favorite cow and do not forget to measure tip-totip, plus photograph your 12, 24 & 36 month old females and send to Geoff. We always welcome any input for The Horny Herald, as our association is as successful as the members are willing to make it. I sincerely hope all members are experiencing the wonderful season we are having in the north. A big welcome to all new members. June 2012

ALBERTA TEXAS LONGHORN ASSOCIATION Mark Stewart, President 403-783-0226 • mswmeats@xplornet.com With summer just around the corner, everyone up here in Canada is in the middle of calving and waiting upon pastures to turn green to turn our new additions out to graze on. In March, we held our Annual General Meeting at the ranch of Mark and Tina Stewart. With a good turn out of members, we were able to discuss the upcoming year events. The Texas Longhorn show will be held in Red Deer, AB on July 21 at 4:00 p.m. The Affiliate Princess of Alberta will be chosen at the show during this time as well. There was also mention of an Evaluation Clinic that may be held during the same weekend in Red Deer. Details will be discussed at a later date. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Alberta Texas Longhorn Association, and a party to celebrate our achievements is being planned for sometime during the summer. Our website is now updated and will remain current with the new website manager we have maintaining the site. The Association would like to congratulate Leonard and Doris Boyd as this year’s recipients of the Robert Owen Memorial Award. Leonard and Doris have been with the association for many years participating and donating in all the events we have had throughout the years. New Directors for the 2012 year are Mark Stewart – President, Dean Marte – Vice President, Del Hepfner – Secretary/Treasurer, Jeff Jespersen and Gordon Musgrove. On March 31 we held our 5th Annual Select Registered Texas Longhorn Sale in Ponoka. With 31 head on offer, many buyers were ready to bid on heifers, mature females and future herd sires. Eight yearling heifers averaged $987.50, two 2 year old females averaged $1,400.00 and fourteen mature females averaged $1,517.86. Six yearling bulls averaged $1,095.83 and one mature herd sire sold for $1,400.00. The highest price yearling heifer (Freckles Posse) consigned by Len & Shirley Bloomberg sold for $1,500.00 to Double D Arena of Saskatchewan. The highest price 2 year old heifer (Winter Magic) consigned by Meridian Longhorns sold to Leonard & Doris Boyd of Stony Plain for $2,000.00. The highest mature female (JRJ Salt & Pepper) consigned by Mark & Tina Stewart sold to Meridian Longhorns of Stony Plain for $2,800.00. The highest price yearling bull consigned by Sun Creek Ranches sold to Kerby McMann of Cold Lake for $1,825.00 and the only mature bull consigned to the sale by One Tree Ranching Co. Ltd. sold to Mike Graham of Crossfield for $1,400.00. The overall average of the sale was $1,288.00. Things are finally looking positive and are real promising in the cattle business for the years to come. Until next time – enjoy the warm summer. AFFILIATES… Send Us Your News! July - Herd Management Guide

Spring Calving:

Spring Calving:

1. If not done previously, vaccinate all new calves for blackleg and malignant edema with a 2-way Clostridial bacterin (4-way or 7-way Clostridial is fine, also), leptospirosis with lepto pomona. Consult your local veterinarian for other diseases that may be a problem in your area. Many producers also consider intranasal IBR/P13, modified live Pasteurella hemolytica and/or BRSV. 2. Vaccinate all heifers that are four to 10 months of age for brucellosis. 3. If a high percentage of cows return to heat after 30-40 days of breeding, re-check bulls for fertility. Change bulls, if necessary, and re-evaluate your nutritional program if cows are not increasing in body condition as green grass comes on. 4. Prepare to cut native grass for hay prior to July 1. After harvesting for hay, do not mow or graze again until after frost.

1. Remove bulls after 90-day breeding season (July 20 equals an April 30 date of birth) 2. Water is extremely important as temperature starts to rise. Make routine checks of the water supply. 3. Continue fly and tick control programs. 4. As grass matures, realize that the protein value decreases. The feeding of two-to-three pounds of a high protein supplement (30-40 percent crude protein content) will stimulate the digestion of the mature forage; therefore, the cattle will consume more forage and will maintain their body condition as winter approaches. 5. If additional summer grazing or hay is needed, fertilize improved grass pastures with 50 pounds of actual nitrogen per acre.

Fall Calving:

If not previously completed: 1. Wean calves and select animals to be retained through yearling time. Breeders collecting weaning weight information should weigh all calves and adjust all weights to a 205 day of age equivalent. Within sex group, calculate a weaning weight ratio to be used as a selection criteria. Identify all calves by sire group to determine which sires are producing the superior calves. 2. Pregnancy check all females as well as check for unsoundness and udder problems for culling purposes. Consider culling females that are not bred, old or poor producers. 3.Vaccinate all heifer calves between four and 10 months of age for brucellosis. 4. All weaned calves should be vaccinated with a 7-way Clostridial bacterin, vaccinated for IBR-PI3-BVD and dewormed. Cull bull calves should be castrated prior to weaning. 5. Replacement heifers should definitely be vaccinated for blackleg, malignant edema, IBR, leptospirosis and brucellosis.
