HV Auctions is excited to return to the Fort Worth Stockyards this fall with a weekend of fellowship, entertainment and premier Longhorn cattle! This is an elite opportunity for buyers and consignors. In 2016, HV Auctions sold 59 Top Cash Cows, and 39 of the Top Cash Cows were sold at the HV Fort Worth Stockyards Longhorns Auction. Before the sale, beverages will be served with live music for entertainment. Rising country music star Rye Davis will be performing at the sale festivities throughout the weekend. EDITOR’S NOTES STEWARDSHIP If you ask ten people the definition of stewardship you will likely hear some slight differences in their responses. Webster defines stewardship as “the act of supervising, managing, or taking care of something.” As a Texas Longhorn breeder, you likely practice livestock stewardship on a daily basis as you care for your herd and tend to your pasture. As your program grows, so does your need for efficient and innovative ways to get things done. Education is the foundation for being a successful steward. The more you learn about your pasture and how to properly take care of it will benefit you and your cattle for years to come. One aspect of getting the most out of your pasture is rotational grazing. Turn to pg. 42 to learn more about this simple to execute grazing system that makes for healthy grass and happy Longhorns. While they are enjoying that grass, there is a risk that your Longhorns may encounter a poisonous snake. For information and tips on treating snakebite in cattle turn to pg. 40. All of that good stewardship pays off when you go to a show and sell those Longhorns! This issue is packed full of sale, futurity and show results. Turn the pages to see strong sale averages, event photos, and discover the winners of recent futurities and affiliate shows. We hope you are planning on joining us at the 30th Annual Texas Longhorn Expo on June 8th-11th, 2017 in Fort Worth, TX. Attendees will enjoy the return of the Texas Gold Futurity as well as the variety of shows and contests for the kids. Turn to pg. 13 for the full event schedule and to view a list of our awesomely generous sponsors. Be sure to say thank you to these individuals and businesses who stepped up to make this show possible. The busy fall season is approaching fast; those who would like to participate in the 2017 TLBAA Horn Showcase Sale have until July 1st to get their paperwork submitted to the TLBAA office. There are so many exciting and fun activities during the Horn Showcase and now is the time to start planning. Turn to pgs. 28-33 to see how you can be a part of this great event.

Registration Matters
Dams of Merit Program Clarifies Requirements Get Your Productive Females Recognized The registration department recently clarified the requirements for the Dams of Distinction and Dams of Merit program. Available to TLBAA members for many years, this program serves as a tool to promote the positive reproductive record of Longhorn females. Due to the increase in embryo transfer, clarification was needed to remind our breeders that this award is for females who calve regularly, therefore excluding embryo offspring from counting toward these awards. The complete requirements are shown below:
Benefits of Participation
Eligibility: All cows nominated for the Dam of Distinction or Dam of Excellence must be registered with the TLBAA! Owners of all cows must be members in good standing of TLBAA.
Productive females in your herd build confidence in other breeders considering purchasing from your program. Proven, long-term successful calving not only increases the value of the female, but shows the value of her genetics whether selling her, her offspring or offspring of a bull out of her genetic pool. If you are serious about making money with Longhorns, you have to generate interest in your product. Consistency calving equates to a cow that earns her keep. Even those only looking to own a piece of history or to have a hobby will be greatly enticed by the possibility of a little extra income. It also serves as self-motivation for breeders to keep better track of which females are truly tops in production in their herd. In today’s world everyone gets busy and one calving season runs into another quickly. It is important to track those calves and identify potential stars, as well as cull those not carrying their weight. If a female has joined the Dam of Merit Roll of Honor, then you have an official record and a certificate to show a potential customer, instead of relying on memory or digging through records to point out the success of your breeding program. It is a small investment of time and nominal money for such a beneficial marketing tool.
Nomination: Nominations will be made on a nomination form provided by the TLBAA office staff.
The Next Step
Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America Dams of Distinction & Dams of Excellence Program Purpose: The purpose of the TLBAA Dam of Distinction and Dam of Excellence program is to recognize those Texas Longhorn cows that calve every year, heighten awareness among breeders as to the importance of yearly cow production and showcase the birthing excellence of this wonderful breed of cattle.
Fee: $25.00 per nomination. Rules: All cows nominated must have calved before 3 (three) years of age and calved every year thereafter (consecutive)! NOTE: EMBRYO TRANSFER CALVES DO NOT QUALIFY! Levels of Recognition: DAM OF DISTINCTION - 5 consecutive TLBAA Registered or “Recorded but not registered” calves! DAM OF EXCELLENCE - 10 consecutive TLBAA Registered or “Recorded but not registered” calves! **ALL NOMINATIONS WILL BE RESEARCHED AND VERIFIED BY TLBAA STAFF** Recognition: Owners of Dams of Distinction and Dams of Excellence will receive a certificate of acknowledgement. The Trails magazine will publish a list of the Dams and Owners.
You will need to make sure that as your females calve, you have updated their progeny records in H.O.R.N.S. If you have a female that qualifies, simply call the TLBAA office and speak to registrar Rick Fritsche, or drop him an email at rick@tlbaa.org and he will provide you with the necessary form to fill out to submit your dam for verification. Rick will also help with any questions you may have about “calf at side” information in H.O.R.N.S. Once the progeny have been verified, your dam will be added to the list which appears in TRAILS magazine, and you will receive a Dam of Merit certificate for your records. This is an affordable and easy benefit for members to promote a very important positive trait of Texas Longhorns that make owning them that much more satisfying. **NOTE: This is not a record TLBAA tracks for you. It is up to you, as a owner/breeder, to notify us when your cow has achieved this goal. We look forward to your participation.

NEBRASKA TEXAS LONGHORN ASSOCIATION 36TH ANNUAL SALE April 7-8, 2017 Broken Bow Livestock Auction, Broken Bow, NE. Auctioneer-Bill Sayre, Brookfield, MO. Sale Coordinators – Rodger & Bonnie Damrow, Roca, NE Photos & Results submitted by Bonnie Damrow The N.T.L.A. members were proud to hold their 36th annual sale April 8th. This sale was dedicated to John Murphy from Quarter Circle Amy, Broken Bow Livestock Auction, Bill Sayre-Auctioneer, Justin J Longhorns, a lifetime supporter of the N.T.L.A. and its youth. We Georges-Pedigrees couldn’t have asked for a nicer, sunnier weekend than the one we had on April 7th and 8th at the Broken Bow Livestock Auction. This was our 4th annual spring sale here in Broken Bow, NE. Friday night we met at the Broken Bow Country Club for a relaxing evening of socializing, drinks and dinner. Eileen’s Catering featured an awesome meal for all to enjoy with Bonnie’s Cake Balls for dessert. Saturday morning started off with a silent auction just before the sale-an N.T.L.A. longtime tradition. Raffle tickets for a heifer calf donated by Les & Charlene Lautenschlager & bull calf donated by Anders Longhorns were sold that day and will be sold until the drawing in August at the Nebraska State Fair WQ Shows. Bill & CJ Sayre We were glad to have our sale on Cattle USA again this year for our customers use. We are so thankful for all the individuals that made this sale possible. A huge thank you to everyone for helping out! Thank you to the consignors, buyers, auctioneer, members & friends for making this sale possible. It’s always fun to make new longhorn friends and reacquaint with old ones. We are looking forward to the 37th sale next spring.

Time to Start Thinking of Deserving Individuals for the 2017
TLBAA Special Awards
Every year we hear people comment that “so-and-so” should’ve been nominated for this award. Well, start thinking and get ready to nominate those deserving individuals! Nominations forms will be published in the fall or may be found online at www.tlbaa.org. The criteria for each award is listed below:
Jack Phillips Award
The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award
Elmer Parker Lifetime Award
Perpetuation and Promotion of the Texas Longhorn Breed A native Texan, Dave Evans entered the Texas Longhorn industry in 1977, establishing the Yellow Pine Ranch at Cuchara, CO. He and his wife, Billicarole, quickly became enthusiastic about the breed and additional ranches were purchased to supplement the original ranch. Evans served on the Board of Directors of both the TLBAA and the Mountains & Plains Texas Longhorn Association. He also served terms as TLBAA Vice-President. He was a founding partner and host of the Colorado National Texas Longhorn Sale, a record-breaking event when it started in 1981, which continued to be one of the industry’s major events for many years. From the start, Evans realized the necessity of using the best bulls available in the breed in order to develop a top herd. His goal was to breed for consistent size as well as correctness and outstanding horns. He purchased Texas Ranger JR in 1980, and then Dixie Rebel and Major Investment. In 1986, Evans acquired CT Spoty Ruler, the bull he considered to be the best he’d ever owned. Before his untimely death, Evans had succeeded in breeding a herd of Texas Longhorns that were well recognized in the breed. It is therefore a significant honor to be a recipient of this award, named in honor of this dedicated Longhorn breeder.
The Jack Phillips Award is named after former TLBAA President Jack Phillips who was a quiet, yet forceful presence in the TLBAA. The award honors individuals who have worked selflessly for the Longhorn and breeders alike, without recognition. Lifetime Devotion to the Texas Longhorn Breed and Its Breeders Elmer Parker was a longtime employee and manager of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Longhorn herd. Parker joined the staff at the Refuge in 1946, learning from the previous Longhorn managers: Earl Drummond, Heck Schrader and Joe Bill Lee. In 1968, he took over the responsibilities of the Longhorns at the Refuge and continued until his retirement in 1981. Thus, the continuity of Longhorn expertise at the Refuge continued for more than half a century. The Parker Brown color designation on Longhorn registrations was named after Elmer Parker – the dark brown, almost black color, with a lighter dorsal stripe, was one of his favorite colors.
Mel Raley Rising Star
Mel Raley will always be remembered as a shining star for the TLBAA because of his ability to share his vast knowledge of the Longhorn breed with new members. This special recognition is awarded to those who have been a member for less than five years and through involvement and sustained enthusiasm have made a positive impact on their peers and on the Longhorn breed.

Recommended Vaccination Schedule By Dr. Bob Kropp
A. Pre-weaning vaccinations 1. Vaccinate all calves at approximately 2-4 months of age with two vaccinations a. Vaccinate for Blackleg and Malignant Edema by using a 7-way Clostridium Chauvoei-Septicum-Novyi-SordelliiPerfringens Types C & D Bacterin-Toxoid b. Vaccinate for Leptospirosis by using a 5-way Leptospira Canicola-Grippotyphosa-Hardjo-IcterohaemorrhagiaePomona Bacterin 2. Vaccinate all calves to be retained past weaning (replacement heifers, bull calves, steers) at approximately 2-4 weeks prior to weaning with the following vaccinations: a. Provide a Blackleg booster by revaccinating using a 7-way Clostridium Chauvoei-Septicum-Novyi-Sordellii-Perfringens Types C & D Bacterin-Toxoid b. Protection against respiratory diseases and a booster for Leptospirosis can be provided by vaccinating with an IBRBVD-PI3-BRSV (KILLED)-Lepto5 Vaccine. Make sure that the vaccine is recommended for nursing calves. c. A Pasteurella haemolytica toxoid vaccination is also recommended.
B. At Weaning of calves from dams (6-8 months of age) 1. Vaccinate all calves retained past weaning (replacement heifers, bull calves, steers) with the following vaccinations: a. Provide an additional Blackleg booster by revaccinating using a 7-way Clostridium Chauvoei-Septicum-Novyi-Sordellii-Perfringens Types C & D Bacterin-Toxoid b. Booster protection against respiratory diseases and an additional booster for Leptospirosis can be provided by vaccinating with an IBR-BVD-PI3-BRSV (Modified Live Virus)Lepto5 Vaccine. Make sure that the vaccine is recommended for non-nursing calves.
c. A Pasteurella haemolytica toxoid booster vaccination should be provided. d. Calfhood vaccination of replacement heifers with strain 51 Brucella abortus vaccine.
C. At One Year of Age 1. Vaccinate all one year old cattle (replacement heifers, bull calves, steers) with the following vaccinations: a. Provide an additional Blackleg booster by revaccinating using a 7-way Clostridium Chauvoei-Septicum-Novyi-SordelliiPerfringens Types C & D Bacterin-Toxoid b. Booster protection against respiratory diseases and an additional booster for Leptospirosis can be provided by vaccinating with an IBR-BVD-PI3-BRSV (Modified Live Virus) Vaccine using Lepto 5 Vaccine as a diluent. c. If cattle are moved in and out of the herd on a frequent basis and bulls are used that are non-virgin bulls, it is recommended that the yearling heifers and yearling bull calves be vaccinated for Vibriosis by using a Campylobacter Fetus vaccine. Vibrio and Lepto-5 can be purchased as one vaccine. Vibrio vaccine should be administered at least 30 days prior to the breeding season because of potential abortion problems.
D. Cowherd and Herd Bulls 1. Vaccinate all cows and herd bulls annually with the following vaccinations: a. Vaccinate for Leptospirosis by using a 5-way Leptospira Canicola-Grippotyphosa-Hardjo-IcterohaemorrhagiaePomona Bacterin b. If cows are moved in and out of the herd on a frequent basis and bulls are used that are non-virgin bulls, it is recommended that the cowherd be vaccinated for Vibriosis by using a Campylobacter Fetus vaccine. Vibrio and Lepto-5 can be purchased as one vaccine, but must be administered after calving and before breeding because of potential abortion problems.

Herd Health
Dealing with Snakebite The rattlesnake is the most common poisonous snake in the U.S. and every year a large number of livestock and pets are bitten. Also of concern are several other pit vipers, including copperheads, cottonmouth and water moccasins. The danger/potency of a bite depends on the amount of venom injected by the snake and the type of toxin—which can vary somewhat depending on the species or variety of snake. Rattlesnakes are most common in the drier western states, while water moccasins and cottonmouths or copperheads are more common in the wetter eastern climates. Dr. A. Jacques Fuselier (Rural Animal Health Management System, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois) spent time earlier in Louisiana and has had a lot of experience with livestock bitten by water moccasins as well as rattlesnakes. “The pit vipers are more common and more dangerous than other poisonous snakes in this country. Most bites I’ve seen were in adult animals and usually on the lower limb or muzzle, especially if they encounter the snake at a stock pond,” he says. Cattle may be curious about the snake and get bitten on the face or muzzle, or on the leg if they walk past the snake on their way to water. “On hot days they may try to get belly-deep in water to cool off. They may get bitten on the dewlap or muzzle. These bites are the ones I’m most concerned about because the rapid swelling can make it difficult for them to breathe,” he says. “If you can catch it early enough, when it is just starting to swell, the veterinarian can manage these by putting an endotracheal tube with a cuff into the nasal passage to keep it open while we do something to reduce the swelling. If the veterinarian can’t get there quickly, the stockman could take a piece of hose and stick it into one of the nostrils,” he says. For a calf, smaller tubing of some kind would work. If the swelling is too far along and the airways are already squeezed shut and the animal can’t breathe, an emergency tracheostomy is necessary, to maintain an active air passage. Its best if this can be done by a veterinarian, but if there is no way to have the veterinarian get there on time, the stockman could try to do it. “You can make a vertical incision through the skin, along the windpipe, right in the middle of the throat— so you can get down to the rings of the trachea. Then you can use your fingers to open that slit a bit wider side to side so you can make a stab incision between 40 | June 2017
the rings. If that’s not enough of a hole to let air go in and out, you can make a cut in a small circle, removing a portion of the cartilage ring to make a bigger hole. Oftentimes a pocketknife stab is enough between the rings to get it open for air flow. If you have to, you can also slip a small piece of hose or tube into that hole to keep it open. This could buy the animal some time until the veterinarian arrives and can take it from there,” says Fuselier. “A bite on the leg is usually not quite as serious, depending on where it is. The higher up on the leg (such as near the armpit or groin) the worse it might be. The toxins could then get into the bloodstream quicker. We worry about that with some bites, because there’s more risk for anaphylactic shock. The toxins may also rupture red blood cells, and this could lead to organ failure, starting with the kidneys,” he says. “But usually what you see first is a localized swelling from the bite. It may then progress along the leg as a generalized swelling or cellulitis in the soft tissues. The best way to treat that would be to surgically debride that area to cut out the dead tissue and get down to the healthy tissue, and clean the wound,” he says. There is controversy about using antibiotics for snakebite. “The purpose of antibiotics is to try to minimize a secondary bacterial infection from the affected area. With all the concern today about using antibiotics in food-producing animals, it should be up to the veterinarian’s discretion to see how dirty the area is, and how well cleanliness could be maintained after the debridement. The main goal of treatment would be to clean out all the necrotic tissue,” he explains. “Many of the toxins in snake venom are toxic to muscle tissue. Some of the rattlesnake bites can also contain neurotoxin, but most of the toxins will affect muscle and blood vessels,” says Fuselier. “Corticosteroids have often been used for treatment, but they are typically ineffective except for decreasing the risk for anaphylaxis. By contrast, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are generally important to use— for reducing the swelling and inflammation. They are also helpful in dealing with many of the harmful byproducts of snakebite,” he says. “DMSO does a good job as an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. One concern with DMSO is that it is also a penetrant and could take the toxin deeper into
TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS
By Heather Smith Thomas the tissue. You want to be careful how you use it. It is a good tool when used appropriately, but not knowing the dose/load of the toxin, you need to be cautious,” he explains. The main goal in treatment is to keep the toxin isolated and minimize its spread. “If the producer can get the animal into a pen/small area where it won’t be moving around as much, this can be helpful. Decreasing the activity of the animal can slow down spread of the toxin, just from the decrease in blood flow.” The toxins in venom of a water moccasin, cottonmouth, copperhead or rattlesnake can be mild or deadly. None of these pit vipers are much more dangerous than the others. Everything is relative and dose-related, depending on the size of the snake, how recently it killed prey (how full or empty the venom sac), and how big the animal is that was bitten. A small calf may be affected more adversely than a large cow. “With a water moccasin and a full dose of venom (if the snake hadn’t eaten for awhile), I would be more concerned about local tissue damage and the radiating effects from that bite—the muscle toxin causing necrosis in a large area. By contrast, a big dose of rattlesnake venom presents a larger risk of it getting systemic and causing organ failure after it gets into the bloodstream. Rattlesnake venom seems to be a little more potent in that aspect,” says Fuselier. Sometimes the secondary bacterial infection from a dirty bite (with a lot of necrotic tissue) is what kills the animal, especially if you didn’t find it for a few days. If the animal is septic and very ill, it will definitely need antibiotic treatment. “With that much destruction of tissue, it increases the ability of bacteria to get into the bloodstream—especially if some time has lapsed since the bite,” he says. “Every animal responds differently to the toxins. The toxin is a foreign protein, so some individuals will have an allergic type of reaction. In some animals the
toxins spread very rapidly within the body, and in others they won’t. It’s not very common to have two cases that are identical,” says Fuselier. Some pastures will be more risky at certain times of year if they provide good snake habitat, or are in an area where snakes may be moving through. “I’ve seen one cow that I was fairly sure got bitten by a copperhead. The pasture had a wooded area at one side and there were copperheads on that property. It was a nasty bite on the lower limb but we were able to manage it fairly well. Copperhead bites don’t seem to create quite as much tissue damage as some of the others,” he says. “The way we handle all of these bites is to debride the area, get down to healthy tissue and keep it clean and covered—to try to minimize any further spread of the venom. How quickly the animal recovers generally depends on the amount of venom and the type of venom. Copperheads don’t seem to have the same quantity of venom and it’s typically a lower dose,” he says. This could still be deadly to a small animal, such as a young calf. “I would be more worried about a copperhead biting a calf than a cow. These snakes love to coil up around the base of a tree, and calves are curious and may come too close,” he says. Awareness is important. “Any stockman who is paying attention to the cattle will be more likely to notice a problem quickly enough to help the animal. And if you start to see snakes in the area, you may be able to do something to minimize exposure.” You might move the cattle out of a certain pasture, or create an alternate water source if it’s been really dry and there is a low area with stagnant water. “You’ll often find snakes there—because they don’t have anywhere else to go for water. A lot of animals will be going there for a drink and the snakes will be hanging around to find prey.” In this situation you could maybe fence cattle out of that watering spot and provide stock water in a trough.

Pasture Management
The Benefits of Rotational Grazing Raising Longhorns on grass seems like a simple proposition, but without healthy grazing habits that grass can disappear quickly. Rotational grazing is a way to increase the growth rate and durability of your existing grass, and the practice has additional benefits as well.
Types Of Grazing
There are three basic systems used for grazing cattle – continuous grazing, rotational grazing and intensive (mob) grazing. 1. Continuous grazing – Livestock are left on the same pasture Cattle become eager to move to new pasture. Photo courtesy of El Coyote Ranch for long periods of time. A pasture that is continuously grazed usually has uneven growth in vegetation, eat more like a vacuum cleaner, eating everything in with some areas eaten very short and others becoming front of it, because they are surrounded by other hunovergrown with weeds or less desirable forage. gry mouths competing for the food. 2. Rotational grazing – Grazing areas are subdivided Proximity of water to grazing affects not only water into smaller pastures or paddocks. The number varies consumption but grazing habits as well. Mark Green, based on total available pasture and forage quality, but district conservationist for the Natural Resources Concan range from 3 up to an unlimited number. Cattle are servation Service, says to keep water within 800 feet of moved to a new grazing area based on forage growth. grazing cattle. This leads to more even distribution of 3. Intensive (mob) grazing – a more management manure, improved grazing distribution and more water intensive form of rotational grazing, it places a larger consumption. concentration of animals on a small pasture and rotates them often every day.
Understanding Grazing Habits
Much research has been done on the grazing habits of livestock, not only from the ranchers need for efficiency, but from the environmental standpoint on drought management, soil erosion and wildlife habitats. Like humans, all livestock prefer to eat what they like the most, first. When left in a single pasture continuously, cattle will keep some areas cropped short while less desirable grasses grow high. As long as the preferred grasses regrow quickly enough, they will eat little of the mature weeds, unless it is a dry or dormant period for the grasses and they are forced to eat the mature growth. When an adequate number of animals are turned on to a smaller pasture and they are moved frequently, the pasture is grazed more evenly. If the cattle feel that there is competition for the food they will be less picky and eat the weeds along with the best grasses. Mob grazing takes this to a more intense level and pushes a large group onto a new, small pasture daily. Proponents say that the soil benefits from trampled vegetation while the cow’s natural instincts cause it to 42 | June 2017
Benefits of Rotation
Time and the initial investment for extra fencing may deter some from the practice of rotating pasture. However, the benefits of the system, even when done on a small scale may outweigh those factors over time. DROUGHT RESISTANCE The amount of root development in grass is related to the height of the grass. Grass with a more developed root system is hardier and will survive longer during dry periods. When livestock are removed before the grass is cropped too closely, it not only allows the roots to thrive, it encourages more rapid regrowth. NUTRIENT DENSITY Grass holds the most nutrition for cattle when it is in the middle of its growing cycle. Short new grass has little nutritional value, as does tall, mature grass that has gone to seed. Proper timing of moving cattle from one pasture to another allows them to get maximum nutritional benefit from available forage. MANURE DISTRIBUTION Livestock owners benefit from the free self-fertilization that occurs as cattle graze on pasture. However, the size of their pasture and frequency of rotation
TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS
By Myra Basham can affect how equally that manure is distributed. The University of Missouri Forage Systems Research Center researched manure pile distribution in 3, 12 and 24 paddock grazing systems. They found that the 24-paddock system had 2-4 times the density of manure piles in the grazing as opposed to near the water and shade as in the 3-paddock system. In fact, the 3-paddock system had the most piles concentrated within 150 feet of water and shade. When grazed continuously, they estimated it would take 27 years for every square yard of pasture received a manure pile. A good rotational grazing system puts the nutrients found in manure back on the areas where it is needed rather than over fertilizing areas around water, under trees and around mineral feeders. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS Many states provide information through their conservation departments regarding rotational grazing as it benefits the environment in general, especially water quality. Healthy plant growth helps prevent runoff by providing a root mass that holds the soil together. Encouraging manure distribution away from water supply improves water quality when utilizing ponds and streams, not only benefiting those downstream from your operation, but protecting your cattle form organisms such as algae that form when nutrient concentrations are too high.
Getting Started
Before running out and dividing up pastures, there are several things to consider in a rotational grazing program. WATER Perhaps the number one consideration in deciding how many paddocks you can feasibly work with is water availability. Each paddock needs a water source, either natural or one you will have to keep filled. The more
Don’t Forget Minerals & Salt It is important to remember that no matter how well one maintains pasture, testing soil and forage to determine what nutrients may be depleted or totally lacking is recommended. Cattle on pasture will require access to salt and minerals. The specific needs can vary and knowing your pasture quality can aid you, along with your vet or feed supplier, to determine the best mineral mix to meet your herd’s requirements. paddocks you have and the more frequently you move the cattle, the more time you will have invested in watering. Some rotational systems have a main water source with an alley running to it, accessible from any grazing section. The alley remains open as does the gate to the pasture being grazed while the dormant pasture gates are closed. Others have a central water source with multiple paddocks sharing it or water at one end of each paddock. The important thing is simply to remember that water must be considered, not only in availability but the time required to maintain it. FORAGE TYPE There are many variables in grass types, quality and growth rates. Enlist the aid of a local extension agent or university ag department to learn what is growing in your pastures. You should also test the forage and the soil to learn what nutrients may be deficient or missing. All of this will help determine the number of animals a pasture can support as well as the frequency of rotation based on regrowth of the grass.

FENCING Fencing systems may be fixed or portable. Often, the perimeter fencing around a divided pasture is a sturdier, solid material, that is permanently in place, while interior dividing fences are a cheaper, easy to move fence such as electric tape or wire. It is more a matter of personal preference and/or budget in determining fence type. PASTURE LAYOUT University studies have found that the most efficient shape of paddocks is square. They use less fencing material when dividing an area and they allow animals to be in closer proximity to a water source, thus encouraging uniform grazing and less concentration of manure at the water source. The number of paddocks depends on fencing, water and time available to move cattle, as well as forage type and quality. Flexibility is key in a rotational system. With careful observation of the cattle and the forage, a producer can learn quickly what works to optimize pasture regrowth. FLEXIBILITY The key to utilizing rotational grazing is flexibility. Growing seasons, precipitation changes and increase or decrease in herd size can all affect the timetable and potentially the paddock sizes used. At times when the grass is slow to grow hay may be used to prolong time in one pasture while another one gets to the proper growth stage to be most effective. Being aware of environmental factors and stocking rates and willingness to adjust accordingly can lead to success not only in the quality 3 Examples of Paddocks of forage available but also (circles represent water decreasing the amount of source) supplemental forage needed throughout the year. IN MEMORIAM
Dr. E. B. “Booster” Stephenson January 18, 1939 - April 20, 2017
Dr. E. B. “Booster” Stephenson, 78, of Wallisville passed away on Thursday, April 20. He was born in Liberty on Jan. 18, 1939 to the late Frank and Elva Stephenson of Wallisville. He was raised in Wallisville. Dr. Stephenson graduated from Anahuac High School in 1956. He graduated from Texas A&M University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1963. Upon graduating from Veterinary Medicine school, he began practicing in Liberty under Dr. Perry. Stephenson Animal Clinic then opened in October of 1963. He was a veterinarian for Raywood Livestock for 42 years, making him the most tenured employee of the auction. Booster married Patsy R. Gardner of Anahuac on June 25, 1965. He was Commissioner of Chambers County for 12 years, from 1973-1984. He was also a member of Anahuac Masonic Lodge No. 995 and Grand Master in 1972. He was the District Deputy Grand Master, 107th District of the Grand Lodge of Texas in 1974. He was Trinity Valley Exposition president, 19911993, and was awarded their Western Heritage Award during this time. He was on the board of directors and was a shareholder at Security State Bank for 34 years. Booster was a member of the First Baptist Church of Anahuac and served as a deacon since 1994. He was a member of Texas Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, Texas Longhorn Breeders Association, lifetime member, wrote for the “Longhorn Scene,” a publication of the TLBAA, lifetime member Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, was the breeds sale committee captain, and served as a TSCRA director, only 151 in the state. He was nominated for Outstanding Alumnus award at Texas A&M University Texas Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association for over 50 years. His ranch was in Wallisville and was recognized as a 100 year (Century Ranch). He was Honorary Chapter Farmer for FFA Chapters in Anahuac, East Chambers and Barbers Hill High Schools. He has vaccinated, free of charge, all of the calves going to the Youth Project Show since its inception in 1964. Booster was awarded the Anahuac Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 2003. His clientele reached far across the state of Texas and even in to Louisiana. He has permitted and tested cattle whose destinations are Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Columbia and Thailand. He held the annual Rabies Clinic beginning in 1964 when vaccination cost 75 cents. Dr. Stephenson retired in June 2005. He had numerous veterinarians come through his 46 | June 2017
clinic en route to their own successes; Dr. Warren L. Beard, Board Certified Equine Surgeon and Professor at Ohio State University and now Kansas State University; Dr. Clint Green, Animal Health Commission in Mississippi, Drs. James and Donna Kay Hall of Dayton and Dr. Mel Evilsizer Whitten, who now has his practice. Many other veterinarians have come through his doors and or used his practice at one time or another. Aside from his many awards and memberships, Booster was most noted for being the “Head Cook” of Cripple Cattle Co. Chuckwagon cooking and his famous Sourdough biscuits. His father was a master carpenter and worked in the same shop that his father built turning out whip handles, tables, valets, and even caskets. Most notable was a casket built for the late Bill Brett, author and humorist from Hull, and more recently, the late Johnny Ackels. He is also known for all types of leather work, from whips to chaps, repairing saddles and recovering chairs. Most people will say that above all, he is unselfish and caring. If it was not for his wife of 51 years, he may have never collected enough money to stay in business. She ran the clinic books and business, while he did all of the vet work. Always known for telling everyone he met, worked for or did some type of doctoring, “just catch up with me later and settle up or I will catch you next time” or “aw, you don’t owe me anything for that.” He was truly a “poor man’s” veterinarian! Neither son can go anywhere or meet anyone without hearing, “You’re Booster’s Son” instead of Baret or Cris. Both consider it an honor. Booster is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Patsy Stephenson; sons, Baret Stephenson and wife Charlotte, of Dayton, and Cris Stephenson and wife Lynna, of Wallisville; grandchildren, Tyler, Logan, Scarlet, Ashtyn, Rachel, Chance, Owen and Maggie; sister, Vida Mae Beard and husband Gerald. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 24, in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Anahuac with Bobby Hall officiating. Graveside services and interment were under the auspices of the Anahuac Masonic Lodge No. 995 at Anahuac Cemetery. Honored to serve as pallbearers were Bradley Beard, Warren Beard, Tyler Sullivan, Logan Sullivan, Chance Stephenson and Owen Stephenson. Honorary Pallbearers were Larry Devillier, Wayne Sullivan, Leroy Ezer, Bubba Devillier, Toby Gardner, Gerald Beard, Larry Duncan , TAMU Veterinarian Class of 1963, Raywood Livestock Market and Cripple Cattle Company Cooking Crew. Memorial donations may be made to the Booster Stephenson Memorial Scholarship Fund, Post Oak Bank, Anahuac, Texas 77514. Condolences and memories may be shared online at www.gracefuneralhome.net.

Henry L. King
September 6, 1927 - April 26, 2017 Henry L. King, Jr. 89, born Sept. 6, 1927, in Webb City, Okla., to Henry and Maude King. Passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2017, in Fort Worth, Texas A memorial Service was held Friday May 5, at Shannon Rufe Snow Funeral Chapel. He was interred in a private ceremony in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Prior to coming to Trails Magazine as a contributing editor in 2002, Henry already had 40 plus years of service in the livestock publications industry. Henry King was raised in an oil patch near Kiefer, Oklahoma. It was free range at that time and there were no fences, so Henry was exposed to livestock at an early age. His family had a few dairy cows and other animals that they raised, and it was Henry’s responsibility to look after them. He spent a time in the Air Force and took advantage of the G.I. Bill upon his return to go to college and receive his degree in Commercial Art. He used his artistic knowledge in building store window displays and as a technical illustrator to get a job as the staff artist at the Amarillo Globe News. In 1960, the Quarter Horse Journal, also based in Amarillo, Texas, was in need of an advertising manager, so they contacted Henry King. He worked there for ten years before he bought a half interest in The Ranchman magazine. After the death of his partner, Henry moved on to the American Paint Horse Association and spent five years there as the Director of Public Relations and Communication, and he also oversaw the Paint Horse Journal.
It wasn’t long before the publishing bug bit him again, and Henry started the Lone Star Horse Report in 1982, which he sold to the present ownership after publishing it for 14 years. When asked to share his favorite experience in the livestock publication business, Henry quickly replied; “I enjoyed the opportunity to travel the United States; coast to coast and border to border for the various events, mainly cattle sales. I got to meet some very interesting characters along with the movers and shakers of the industry.” Henry was a supporter of Ted Pressley’s Cowboys for Christ, one of the nation’s oldest livestock industry ministries, which now has 70 chapters across the United States and 116 chaplains. Henry helped develop its Christian Ranchman magazine, which began publication in 1976 and has a bimonthly circulation of over 21,000. Those who spoke of Henry at his memorial service noted his kindness, his sense of humor, his talent, a strong work ethic and, above all, his love of family and his strong faith. Sam Ed Spence, chaplain at Lone Star Park and a longtime friend of Henry summed it up, “The world needs more men like Henry King.” Henry is survived by his wife of 64 years, Phyllis Marie King; daughter, Leslie Sikes and husband, Rusty; grandchildren, James Sikes, Tiffany Kessler (Floy), and Lacey Bryan (Spencer); seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital at www.stjude.org or to Universal Health Resources (Hospice), P.O. Box 8795, Fort Worth, Texas 76124.

With entries PRESIDENT and attendance rivaling World Show, we are pleased to host this event every RICK@RIVERRANCHLONGHORNS year. The next big events on our schedule will be selecting students for this year’s scholarships and our year end banquet where we vote for officers and directors. JUNE
SPRING Calving:
TLBAA Breed Advisory Committee’s
Herd Management Guide
1. If not done previously, vaccinate all new calves for blackleg and malignant edema with a 2-way Clostridial bacterin (4-way or 7-way Clostridial is fine, also), leptospirosis with lepto pomona. Consult your local veterinarian for other diseases that may be a problem in your area. Many producers also consider intranasal IBR/P13, modified live Pasteurella hemolytica and/or BRSV. 2. Vaccinate all heifers that are four to 10 months of age for brucellosis. 3. If a high percentage of cows return to heat after 30-40 days of breeding, re-check bulls for fertility. Change bulls, if necessary, and re-evaluate your nutritional program if cows are not increasing in body condition as green grass comes on. 4. Prepare to cut native grass for hay prior to July 1. After harvesting for hay, do not mow or graze again until after frost.
FALL Calving:
1. Wean calves and select animals to be retained through yearling time. Breeders collecting weaning weight information should weigh all calves and adjust all weights to a 205 day of age equivalent. Within sex group, calculate a weaning weight ratio to be used as a selection criteria. Identify all calves by sire group to determine which sires are producing the superior calves. 2. Pregnancy check all females as well as check for unsoundness and udder problems for culling purposes. 3. Vaccinate all heifer calves between four and 10 months of age for Brucellosis. 4. If not done previously, all weaned calves should be vaccinated with a 7-way Clostridial bacterin, vaccinated for IBR-P13BVD and dewormed. Cull bull calves should be castrated prior to weaning.

TLBT OFFICER SPOTLIGHT
President’s Message
Cody Garcia
Dear TLBT Members, SUMMER IS HERE! Isn’t that amazing! Summer is a busy show season, and I can’t wait to see all of you at World Show. Once again, I would like to remind you guys of a handful of things: • The Officers and Directors desperately need your pictures, so contact us via our email or any of our social media accounts. • We also need all hands on deck for these last fundraisers. Keep your eyes open for opportunities to participate. Speaking of which, you all recall the “Rocking Longhorn Bull” that was so graciously donated to us? A wonderful opportunity for you to get involved would be for you to sell raffle tickets for the “Rocking Longhorn Bull!” • There will be a dance after the World Show banquet in June, so be sure to stick around! Dancing after the banquet is a very special tradition for the TLBT, and it’s always so fun. • Seniors I hope you’ve have taken advantage of all scholarship opportunities offered by TLBT and affiliates. Every penny counts! Also, we will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Longhorn Exposition at the historic Will Rodgers Coliseum. The color associated with 30 years is green. What a better theme for the banquet than CAMO! I invite all of you to wear as much (or as little camo) as you like. You could even simply stick to green. I can’t wait to see all of you there! We love to give promotional memberships! Reward your customers for free On behalf of our members, the TLBAA offers a 3 month promotional membership to new Longhorn owners that also includes the Texas Longhorn Trails Magazine. When our members sell to new buyers, we send the new buyers a welcome packet with literature that will help them get started as a Longhorn Breeder. When offering a promotional membership, please let the new buyer know that we need these three things to accompany the transfers or registration applications. 1. New member’s name or ranch name (This will be the name printed on the Certificate of Registration). If it is a husband and wife, we need both names. Accurate spelling of names or ranch name is needed as many new members contact us to correct the spelling of their name. 2. Accurate address, telephone & email information. 3. Payment must accompany the applications for Registration & Transfer. At the end of the 3 month promotional membership period, an invitation will be sent to encourage the new breeder to join the TLBAA. Thanks to our great members, the TLBAA membership continues to grow! For questions or suggestions, please contact Dana at (817) 625-6241 or dana@tlbaa.org
