EDITOR’S NOTES SUMMER IS HERE It’s hard to believe that another school year has ended and the TLBAA World Expo is at the end of this month. As everyone has enjoyed getting more active and events are happening without postponements or cancelling, there’s a very positive vibe in the Longhorn industry right now. Many of the sales held this Spring have enjoyed an influx of new buyers as well as an abundance of existing breeders competing to take home their favorites. Whether you choose to buy private treaty or via public auction, there’s a few things to consider before you begin or continue adding to your herd.... grass and water! Even in temperate climates with good grass, if you overbuy you can turn grass to dirt pretty quickly. As you consider things like pasture rotation or leasing acreage, learning a bit about how to get water to places without a natural water source and no exiting water lines can save a lot of headache and panic later. Turn the pages to find articles addressing these issues. The Longhorn industry as a whole just keeps getting busier! That’s not a bad thing. But with sales and shows, affiliate meetings and association events filling every month of the calendar, that sense of time speeding by is very real. Keep your calendar marked well ahead so you can plan for your coming year or so and take steps to promote your program, enter events and consign to sales with intent and planning. Grab your idea book (see pg. 30) and gear your social media, web and print efforts up in order to let folks know you’re there and help your name be familiar by the time you start participating in shows, sales or futurities. I hate it when I get a call at the office of someone wanting to get in a sale whose consignment deadline was a month prior. Participation in events cannot be a last minute thing. That time element is important when you are considering sponsorship as well. The earlier you choose to sponsor, the more free promotion you will get from the event. There are no discounts for last-minute sponsorships to make up for the reduced exposure. If you are fairly certain you wish to promote an event, get ‘er done and reap the benefits of your name being before the industry the longest time possible. Amidst all the rushing and planning and doing, don’t forget to take the time to just sit out back and watch those Longhorns grazing as the sun sets (or rises). There’s no better cure for the stress of this day to day race we all run. And, don’t forget to use that in your marketing! The outdoors, the relaxation, the magic the cattle work in your life can certainly be things to mention when trying to introduce people to this unique breed of cattle. Invite them into your escape from the rat race! Until next month,

Association News
Chairman’s Message Greetings, It’s been a little busy around the TLBAA these last few months. In March we had 777 registrations and 527 transfers. In April we had 615 registrations and 1304 transfers. Besides the normal day to day operations in the office, it’s the time of the year when people are renewing their memberships. Please remember that it’s a good time to check and correct all your information. Also on that note, Myra and Trace have several options to advertise your ranch at that time. Please check with them if you are interested in doing something like that. There are some good articles in Trails this month on grazing wisely and ways to water cattle away from a fixed source. Good information whether you’re new or been in it a while. There’s a lot going on in the industry and you can find sale results on the Blue Ridge Sale, Cherry Blossom Sale and the Red McCombs Fiesta Sale in this month’s issue. They were great sales with good averages. Lots of positive energy in the industry at this time. There were futurities as well - Southeastern Winchester Futurity, Cherry Blossom Futurity and the Glendenning Farms Heifer Sale & Futurity results are all included. It’s a good chance to see what fellow breeders value in today’s Longhorn cattle. The World Expo is coming up this month and shaping up to be a great one, again. The Horn Showcase coming up quickly right behind in November, is in full swing taking entries for the sale, futurity, Bull Alley and measuring classes. These two are the largest events that the TLBAA puts on and your support is needed and will be greatly appreciated in making these happen. Sponsorship packages are available for both events, and you can contact Pam Robison at the office, or any of the committee members if you would chose to support them. Great things are happening with the TLBAA, and thank all the members for their faith in this association. To my Longhorn Family, Thank You,
Keith Du Bose, Chairman of the Board Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America

Not participating this year? Come on out and be a part of the fun anyway! The TLBAA World Expo is a great chance to see Longhorns and meet some great people. The event is free to attend and the barns are open to walk through and get a chance to meet breeders and showmen. If you have been considering showing but have not made the plunge yet, here’s your chance to get some insight, see what goes in to participating and talk to folks who have years of experience with showing Longhorn cattle. The youth are also eager to share their experiences so you get a better idea of whether or not showing Longhorns isn’t something you would want your youth to be a part of. Some of the highlights for spectators are: • TLBT National Youth Show - watching these kids from Pee Wee through Seniors handle these magnificent animals is simply amazing. • Texas Gold Futurity - Animals are judged individually by a panel of judges, scored by how they stand up against an “ideal” Longhorn in the judges view. • Non-Haltered Division - Female Longhorns freely roam the ring while judged. • TLBT Senior Sale - Graduating seniors offer Longhorns at auction to any and all bidders. A great chance to support the youth and take a great Longhorn home. • Breeder Memorial - Honoring members of the Longhorn industry lost since last TLBAA World Expo. • Trophy Steer Show - The largest of the Longhorns take to the ring freely, while being judged from horseback. Truly an awe-inspiring sight. • Haltered Division - Both youth and adults compete in the ring with animals at halter.
PARTICIPATING? DON’T FORGET: Photography contestants – bring your 8 x 10 black matted photo to the show office. Silent Auction – bring your items to support the event! Banquet – everyone is invited! Be sure and purchase your tickets ($35) in advance by contacting the TLBAA office – we need an accurate count for the caterer. The banquet begins at 5:00 pm on Saturday, June 26 and will honor TLBAA award, TLBT award and Texas Gold Futurity winners.

CL MARILYN MONROE CLARICE FRANCIS
HOWDY! My name is Clarice Francis, and I am a graduating senior from Angleton High School. I will be attending Texas A&M University this fall where I plan to study Animal Science- Production/Industry with an emphasis in Beef Cattle. In addition, I plan to obtain an Equine Science Certificate to broaden my education in preparation for a career in Ranch Management. This is my 8th season showing Texas Longhorns and every moment has played a part in making me the person I am today. I am also the proud owner of CF Cattle Co. which I will continue to build and develop throughout my life.
CL MARILYN MONROE
CL Marilyn Monroe (aka Roe), DOB 1/31/20, has just scratched the surface of her show career. She has big shoes to fill with such an impressive pedigree (Sanddollar Cisco Kid x CL Harmony). I already see an abundance of unique personality and flare in her. The older she gets the more impressive she beceomes placing higher and higher in class 5. This girl is going to develop into a phenomenal brood cow with her wide topline, great muscle development, good spring of rib, and nice depth of body. From the show ring to becoming a producer, I think she has what it takes to excel in both! 16 | June 2021

SRR WINTER JOY SRR Winter Joy was born on December 14, 2019. Both parents where bred from Cody and Taylor Himmelreich. Her sire is Hi-5 Heatwave, and her dam is Hi-5 Holly. I am extremely excited to see how she develops as she ages. 20 | June 2021

Taking Grass For Granted Longhorns grazing on native grasses over adequate acreage (Pic 1) will flourish as much as those kept on well-maintained smaller pastures (Pic 2.), especially when rotational grazing is used. But close attention to stocking rates, forage quality and seasonal changes is necessary to prevent wearing a pasture down to dirt (Pic 3).

grazing in too small a space with inadequate resources will turn that space into dirt. How much space and forage that cow needs to keep grass under her varies greatly from region to region and season to season. The care, consideration and need for management increases exponentially as you add more cattle. Please take note whether you are buying your first Longhorn or you fiftieth one – any grazing livestock without adequate pasture with nutrient rich forage must have supplemental feed to maintain optimum health and body condition. If you are selling Longhorns to people without emphasizing to them the need for adequate forage or else supplemental feed then you are likely dooming that new buyer to failure. How do you know if you have enough grass, good enough quality of forage or how much to supplement? It’s a huge question and there are many publications that offer formulas and guidelines specific to your geographic region. Your local extension agent or an estab22 | June 2021
lished Longhorn breeder in your area can be a tremendous help. Here are a few basic ways you can evaluate a pasture and determine if it is healthy or overgrazed. VISUAL INSPECTION • Are there large barren patches with very short cropped patchy areas of grass? • Are there very tall patches of weeds or complete weed cover but the grass is eaten down to the dirt? • No weeds, but grass stays continuously grazed short? FORAGE ANALYSIS • Do a visual check to see what types of forage your property has and in what quantities • Check with county or state ag departments or local universities for free or cheap testing • Test forage and soil quality, including supplemental feed

EVALUATE YOUR CATTLE • Are your cattle staying in a good, healthy body condition or do they have a boney, sunken in look?
• Cull often and reduce numbers before degrading your grass is an issue
• How’s their health? Have you had an increase in parasite issues? Many parasites live close to the dirt level and when cattle bite the lowest part of the grass off they ingest a greater number of parasites and potentially illness causing bacteria.
• To whatever degree possible utilize rotational grazing to maximize the number of head you can run. There are lots of models available in detail online with a simple search of the term.
• If you do put out hay do they come running and devour it as if they are overly hungry?
If you decide to lease or buy more property, do yourself a favor and evaluate it first for signs of overgrazing. No need to move onto property already damaged by overstocking. If it really comes down to losing your grass for a prolonged time, then cutting losses and selling your culls at the sale barn quickly may allow you enough space for at least a two pasture rotation and allow your forage to improve with some time and care. If you don’t want to take the time for a lot of math or you just can’t wait to get a Longhorn, if you have
CONSIDER CAPACITY • Reach out to other established Longhorn breeders in your region and see how many head they successfully run per acre with little supplementation. No Longhorns near? Ask another cattle producer, taking into account that you may be able to run a few more head of Longhorns per acre(s) than they can with commercial cattle, especially if there is browse

DIFFERENCES IN STOCKING RATE
WON’T IT JUST GROW BACK? The relationship between grass being grazed and the root system is closely related. According to an article by Brad Schick, Nebraska Extension educator, “One of the worst ramifications of overgrazing is No states or regions are listed simply because differences in soil, forage and terrain from one damaged roots. Equipment
Innovative Portable Water Systems for Rotational Grazing When stockmen utilize rotational grazing and move cattle every day or every few days, they need a way to provide water in each segment of pasture or multiple pastures. And in some situations there are pastures without adequate water sources and a person has to haul water. Jeff Brown, ranching with his father near Faith, South Dakota, made a portable water rig, using an old Army 6 by 6 truck. The poly tank on the truck holds about more than 2000 gallons and can be driven anywhere on the ranch to supply water in a far pasture. “We just drag some 1.5 inch high-density poly pipe around to service the tank. Then when it’s really hot and the cattle all come up to drink at once, there will be 10 gallons for every cow,” says Brown. His first version was simply the big tank on the back of the Army truck. “With the sun shining on the yellow tank we would get hundreds of pounds of green slime in the tank during summer, so we covered the tank with a little shed, which keeps it cooler,” he says. Now all the tanks are covered. “We also found a military trailer—an old munitions trailer—at an auction, and put tanks on that, too, with water troughs along the side. The trailer is always hooked to the truck; they never get separated. The tank on the trailer holds 750 gallons. We can drop the troughs down when we get to where we want them, lowering them down to where the calves can reach the water,” he says. The tanks are fastened solidly to the trailer—the rear one for the calves and the two side tanks. “The trailer is air ride, however, so when we get to where we want the troughs to be we use a dump valve to let the air out, so the whole trailer sinks down to where the cattle can reach the tanks easier,” he explains. The sources for water are wells, with pipelines from the wells. These wells are about 200 feet deep, and have good water, and run about 15 to 20 gallons a minute. The tank truck and trailer can be filled from these wells. “When the cattle are drinking out of those troughs (with floats to shut off the water when they are full), the tanks stay hooked to the above-ground lines,” he says. “We have other water tanks also, and can tap into pipelines from the wells. On one of our leased places we have about 6 taps, to service 2200 acres. We just drag the poly pipe around to where we need it, in 100026 | June 2021

foot pieces. We can drag a pipe through the pasture with our Polaris Ranger and hook it up to the water rig on the trailer,” he explains. The cattle are moved to different pasture about every 3 days, on average, and it’s handy to be able to move the water with the cows,” says Brown, He also made several small trailers out of scrap metal, to haul smaller tanks around for smaller herds, in pastures where they don’t need a big tank. “We have some tanks that can water 150 to 200 yearlings, and some smaller ones for smaller groups of cattle. We have big drains in the bottom of those tanks so when we need to move them we can just pull those tubes out and drain them, and then pull those tanks (on the small trailers) around the pastures with the Polaris Ranger. Empty, they are not very heavy,” he explains.
INNOVATION ON A TEXAS RANCH Emry Birdwell and his wife Deborah run large groups of cattle on their ranch near Henrietta, Texas, moving them several times a day to new pasture, allowing each pasture a long enough rest to fully recover before grazing it again. In 10 years they increased the stocking capacity on their ranch from 2400 head to more than double that number. “On our ranch today we have 120 permanent paddocks, fenced with electric hard wire, and divide each of those 3 to 5 ways with poly wire. During March through June we generally move those cattle on average about 4 times per day—some days it is 6 times per day and a minimum of twice a day,” says Birdwell. “Since 2011 we’ve put in a pipeline system for water. We’d been watering in dirt tanks that collect runoff from rainwater. Due to lack of rain, we put in the pipeline so we can pump from those dirt tanks into water troughs. Most of the cattle are now using water troughs,” he says.

If it gets ahead of the cattle the water goes back to the source,” he explains. The drains also enable them to empty the trough quickly when it’s time to move it. “Whenever we get ready to move the trough it takes about 5 minutes to drain the water; we just disconnect the hoses, chain them to the trough and drive off. We can pull the trough trailer with an Portable watering trough made out of a large propane tank can be pulled with an ATV. ATV. When we have it hooked up to the pressurized line we have three floats on it so we can get maximum water flow into it. We also have a water pump and generator sitting on the trailer so we can pull it up to a fenced-off dirt tank to pump from the tank.” Birdwells fenced off the dirt tanks to keep cattle out of the water. This keeps the water cleaner, without trampling and mud. “It also keeps all the manure and urine out of the water,” he says. “We just pull our portable trough up to that fenced-off dirt tank and pump water continually into the trough. 1 lb. lean Longhorn beef 1/4 c. finely chopped onion 1/4 c. finely chopped red or green bell peppers
1/3 c. ketchup 1/4 c. Pace picante sauce 1/2 c. honey barbeque sauce* 1/2 tsp. lemon pepper
Mix beef and onion; cook Longhorn beef-onion mixture until beef is done using low heat. (High heat would require adding 1/8 cup of canola oil or other favorite.) Add bell peppers, ketchup, picante sauce, barbeque sauce and lemon pepper. Mix; simmer all ingredients on low heat for about 10 minutes. Serves 4-6. *Kraft honey and hickory flavored barbeque sauce works great. Note: I don’t like it when Bill adds in the oil. On low heat, it cooks just fine without it even at 98% lean. Also your favorite sauces, ketchups for a substitute will work great. I like this because the bun does not get soggy when eating it. (Sandy Martin)

WITH JULIE PACK, DVM
Doc, I’ve ended up with a bottle calf. What do I need to know?
Bottle calves can be very frustrating, but also very rewarding. At this point it’s probably too late to make sure your new bottle baby got colostrum. Baby calves need at least 4 pints of high-quality colostrum or colostrum replacer within the first 48 hours of birth. After the first 48 hours they lose the ability to absorb the antibodies from the colostrum. Calves that miss out on colostrum will be more susceptible to disease until they develop their own immune system at 4-6 months of age. Be prepared to treat them with antibiotics as needed. The most common ailments in bottle calves are diarrhea and upper respiratory infections. Your new baby will need a good milk replacer, at least a 20:20 made with whey and milk protein not soy. Calves are creatures of habit, be sure to feed them on a schedule to avoid upsetting their gut. Starting at a few days old you can begin offering a dairy calf starter ration. Follow the directions on the starter to know when to switch to a grower ration and wean your new calf. Most calves will be eating grain well and can be weaned at 3-4 months. A well-managed bottle calf can grow into a great cow if they are given the right start in life! Until next time, may your pastures be green and your calves be healthy! EXHIBITOR’S CHOICE
• Awarded to the owner who has the most animals entered and officially measured for the Horn Showcase. • There will be one point awarded for each animal entered in a measuring class. • Animals can be measured in Lawton or at satellite locations. • Animals must be listed with the same ownership name. Ownerships listed in a single name or two names associated with a ranch name will be considered as the same ownership. • Partnerships will be considered a separate ownership. • In the event of a tie, all winning owners will be declared as winners and receive award. Examples: John Smith, Ann Smith, John & Ann Smith, or Smith Longhorns will all be considered as the same ownership. (John or Ann) Smith/Brown Partnership will be considered a separate ownership.
ULTIMATE COW & BULL AWARD • One bull and one female will be chosen based on popular vote. • Animals must be present in Lawton to be eligible. • Ballots will be available at the TLBAA desk during the event for voting.
HORN SHOWCASE FUTURITY
The TLBAA HSC Futurity is set up by age divisions to allow breeders the opportunity to exhibit the total package animals that represent their breeding operation. • There is a 75% cash payout based on the class size. Payout will go to the top third of the class. • Animals must be entered in at least one horn measurement contest. • Animals will enter the ring based on age. Youngest to oldest. When the animal being exhibited walks into the ring, the 5 judge panel will be given the animals DOB. • With the 5 judge panel, the high score and the low score will be thrown out and the remaining three judges will be added together for the final score. In the event of a tie there will be a tie breaker judge selected in advance. That judge’s score will be the tie breaker in the event of a tie. • Animals must measure in at least one measurement class to participate in Futurity as well as be eligible for a Superior Award.
• Get of Sire and Produce of Dam will each offer a Junior Division and a Senior Division. • Each Division is based on the age of the offspring of the animal entered. The Junior Division consists of offspring between the ages of two and five years of age. The Senior Division consists of offspring six years and older. • Sires must have three offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite. • Dams must have two offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite. • Both living and deceased bulls and cows can be entered since entries are based on measurements of offspring. • Scoring for each animal will be computed by adding the values of TTT, TH and Composite of all three offspring for a bull or both offspring for a cow. The bull or cow with the highest value of the total added measurements amongst offspring will be the winner. • Animals do not need to be present to compete in this class – can be measured at a satellite or in Lawton. • Only breeding animals (Bulls or Cows) can compete as offspring. • Offspring may be produced by natural breeding, artificial insemination or embryo transfer.
HORN SHOWCASE SUPERIOR AWARD This innovative award showcases our most elite animals that possess the total package we all strive for. To achieve the Superior Award, animals are required to compete in the horn measurement contest, as well as be judged on conformation in the Horn Showcase Futurity. To be win the Superior Award, an animal must place first in both a measurement class and their Futurity class. Winners will have a trophy mailed to them after the event.

They gathered in the soft spring Texas Hill Country rain from all over the country, some from as far away as Illinois, to sell or purchase an elite selection of iconic registered Texas Longhorns being offered at the Red McCombs 43rd Fiesta Sale. Also, whether in person or on the internet online bidding system, all had come to pay their respects to one of the most successful registered Texas Longhorn breeding programs in the world and to say thanks to the two people responsible for this success, Alan Sparger and Red McCombs. From the heifer sale on Friday, the evening ending, toe tapping, boot scoot’n, country music feed and party, to Saturday’s incredible selection of registered longhorns birthed before 2016 plus herd bulls, the soft spring rain continued to rejuvenate the surrounding Hill Country pastures. Many, many thanks to all of our consignors, sponsors and especially you the buyers.

In Memoriam
Mr. Bernd Otto Winkel January 24, 1943 - December 12, 2020 Mr. Bernd Otto (Bo) Winkel, 77, of Clayton TX, was born January 24, 1943 in Bochum, Germany, to the marriage of Otto Rudolph and Hannah Hermes Winkel and passed this life December 12, 2020 at his home in Clayton. Bernd came to the United States with his mother after WWII in 1949. Raised by his mother and Aunt Friedel Heuckendorff, he graduated from Marion High School in Houston and then further his education at the University of Houston. Bernd met and married the love of his life, Joe Ann Mauritzen, on August 5, 1967 and together they celebrated 53 years of marriage. Mr. Winkel retired from the NASA United Space Alliance after 40 years of service and 129 missions. He was of the Lutheran faith and attended Bethel Baptist Church. Bernd enjoyed antique cars and was a former member of the Galveston and Houston Antique Car Clubs. He loved his Longhorn cows, dog, and cat, but most of all his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his Aunt Friedel. Many of the TLBT members called him “Opa,” the name the grandchildren, Erin and Hunter, called him. He enjoyed the Longhorns and helping get ready for shows. The shows were a special highlight as he made new friends and greeted the older ones. He greatly appreciated the Longhorn experiences which provided opportunities to expand their knowledge and build work ethics and character. Both Erin and Hunter have used the economic rewards to earn degrees in the fields of agriculture. To put the love of God, family, and country above other aspects of life has been reinforced by those in the Longhorn program, for which Bo was truly grateful. He played host to many people from the distant parts of the U.S. He also hosted people from the Eastern and Western European countries who wanted to see Texas Longhorns. We had visits from exchange Erin Winkel, 22, with Cracker Jack, 4 yrs., Reserve Junior Class Trophy Steer; Hunter, 15, students from several Asian countries, as well with Ike, 4 yrs., Champion Junior Class Trophy Steer and Grand Champion Trophy Steer as South America. There are visitors whom we never meet because they stopped and hung over the fence to watch and take pictures. Bo loved his Longhorns, family, faith and adopted country. Mr. Winkel is survived by his loving wife Joe Ann Winkel of Clayton; sons, Joe Winkel and wife Kristen of Galveston, and David Winkel and wife Alma of Houston; grandchildren, Erin Griffin and husband Sean and Hunter Winkel, and cousin Ralf Theimer and his wife Carolyn of Brenham, TX. Mr. Clayton was buried in Clayton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Clayton Cemetery, 2372 FM 1970, Carthage, TX 75633. Memorials are published free of charge based on information shared by the family or a close family friend. Additional information regarding involvement in the Longhorn breed may be provided along with the published obituary, or a customer memorial specifically for the Longhorn industry may be provided. It may be edited to fit available space. Please submit memorials, or any questions, to myra@tlbaa.org.

AFFILIATE UPDATES Market Explosion!!! That describes pretty well what is happening to the Longhorn business in the Upper Midwest. By this time of year, most breeders see their calves on the ground and bulls in the pasture. That takes the pressure off, with winter chores and calving in the rear-view mirror. It’s a great time of year. GORDON HOWIE There has been a definite up-tick in private treaty sales and ranch tours in our PRESIDENT region. As the GPTLA has grown, so have our marketing efforts. New breeders GKHOWIE@YAHOO.COM continue to join us and buy cattle. Programs with a few Longhorns are expanding their herds as they see great marketing opportunities in our region. This month, we are featuring a “new member” that is no stranger to the Longhorn community. Chad and Janell Smith are dedicated Longhorn Producers in North Dakota. Their program includes embryo production from some of the nation’s leading genetics. Chad and Janell have proven the resilience of Longhorn cattle in the frigid temperatures of the North Dakota winters. Second to raising their family, the Smiths are serious about being part of the resurgence of Texas Longhorn cattle in the Upper Midwest. We have another fun-filled three-day event planned at the Central States Fair this year. The crowds for our events get bigger every year. Over 130,000 people attend the Central States Fair. Longhorn lovers come from all across America for these events, to buy-sell-show Texas Longhorn Cattle. It has stirred up quite a bit of excitement about the breed in the Upper Midwest. August 20: 3rd Annual Regional Horn Measuring Event August 21: 3rd Annual Top Hand Invitational Longhorn Sale 2nd Annual “National Love Your Longhorn Day” 1st Annual “Points Only” World Qualifying Longhorn Show August 22: 6th Annual World Qualifying Longhorn Show We are working together to promote Longhorn cattle and help breeders buy and build their programs. The results speak for themselves. Come visit us in the Upper Midwest, the home of great Longhorns, friendly people, blue skies, fresh air, sunshine… and the fastest growing Longhorn market in the nation! Call us any time! In March, we hosted our annual Cattle Baron’s Premiere Longhorn Sale and Winchester Futurity at the Brazos Valley Livestock Commission in Bryan, Texas. The futurity and sale results can be found on pages 36-37 of the April 2021 Texas Longhorn Trails publication. Based on their longevity, leadership, and generosity in all aspects of TLBGCA, this year’s recipients of the John Stockton STEPHEN HEAD Award were George and Peggy Wilhite of Texas W Ranch. Congratulations PRESIDENT George and Peggy, and thank you for your continued participation and HEADSHORNS@HOTMAIL.COM support! We would also like to thank Rick Friedrich and Steve Azinger, our event organizers, as well as a host of many other volunteers who helped make this event a success. The 2022 date has not been set yet, so mark the first weekend of March on your calendar as the tentative date. In April, we once again hosted a show in conjunction with the Matagorda County Fair and Livestock Association in Bay City, Texas. The first year the MCFLA invited Longhorns to participate was in 2019. We had a good turnout and they enjoyed us being there so much that we were invited back again last year to host what has now become a world-qualifying show. A steer was generously donated by Cody and Taylor Himmelreich and awarded to Will Frazier (a non-Longhorn exhibitor) as part of our effort to promote the Longhorn breed to the general public. If you meet Will at one of the upcoming shows, please introduce yourself and help us welcome him to the breed. After the completion of the Longhorn show, our exhibitors were invited to participate in the showmanship competition for all breeds. We are proud to say that two of the three divisions were won by our Longhorn exhibitors. Congratulations Clarice Francis (senior division) and Eisley McCullough (intermediate division)! On May 7-9, we hosted our annual Spring Show at Miracle Farms in Brenham, Texas. The Youth Show followed by a BBQ dinner, donation steer drawing, and scholarship awards ceremony were held on Saturday, and we rounded out our show on Sunday with a nice turnout for the Open Show. Watch for more details in next month’s publication. Our next upcoming event will be our annual membership meeting/dinner which is typically held sometime in July. If you are not currently a TLBGCA member, we invite you to join us to learn more about our affiliate. More details about this event to come as soon as all the plans are finalized. As you can see, we have a little bit of something for everyone. We welcome and encourage your participation. For more details on any of our events, check us out on Facebook or on our website, tlbgca.com. We look forward to seeing you sometime soon!

Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow
Presidents
Message
Spring is a time for growth and new life on ranches everywhere. It seems like we’ve been finding a new baby daily at our ranch. From kittens, to chicks and the much anticipated Longhorn calves we’ve patiently waited 9 long months for - spring is my favorite time of year. Early spring is also the time of year many of us plan our breedings, conduct AI work and pair cattle with a carefully chosen bull. As ranchers, we’re always looking ahead to the next Spring, while enjoying the current season. Early in our breeding program, I only had a couple of cows to plan breedings for. This year, coordinating and planning my breeding took a little longer since my herd has grown! One breeding I am very excited about is for a heifer that was donated to last year’s Gold Merit Competition. I received LW Marina Del Ray for earning 1st place in the Gold Merit Competition. The Gold Merit competition is held annually at the TLBAA World Show in Belton, TX. TLBT members complete a record book, a speech and interview. The three components are scored and then contestants are ranked within their age division. Awards are presented to the 1st - 3rd place winners in each division at the TLBAA World Show Banquet, with 1st place receiving a donated heifer! I love this competition for several reasons! The youth learn how to keep detailed records about their longhorn and speak in front of a panel of judges. What better way to encourage the youth to become the BREEDERS OF TOMORROW! Sharing our passion and relevant information about the breed is vital to keeping the Texas Longhorn Breed growing and valuable. The Hall of Fame contest is also awarded annually at the TLBAA World Show Banquet. The top 10 TLBT members in each age division are recognized and the top point winner for each age division is awarded a donated heifer! Points can be earned by TLBT members in more ways than just showing their cattle. Members are encouraged to conduct seminars, give speeches, recruit new TLBT members and participate and excel in showmanship competitions. As we enter into the final weeks of our 2020-2021show season and prepare for the TLBAA World Show in Belton, TX I want to remind each and every TLBT member to find ways to connect with the TLBT. There are so many ways to earn prizes, meet new friends, learn about Texas Longhorns and build herds that will last for generations. As this season comes to a close, make sure to always plan ahead for next Spring!

“I [Courtney Collins Lee] started showing Texas Longhorns in 1992. HOT in Waco was my first show. In 1993, I won a calf scramble heifer. In 1994, I was pictured in the Star-Telegram getting my heifer ready to show in the calf scramble class. 1994 was my first year to compete in Gold Merit. I presented a speech on A.I. & reproduction. My mom, Rachel, did AI for large ranches so it was something I learned at a young age. I don’t recall what place I earned that year, but I do know I gained public speaking skills that would last a lifetime. I was an awkward, anti-social kid who just wanted to show cows, but I’m glad my parents made me do Gold Merit. I participated in Gold Merit for several more years, sometimes placing and sometimes not. I will always have those memories.” Mrs. Lee owns Lee Show Supply and has reunited with the TLBT show circuit this year. She’s just one of several TLBT alumni that have continued to give back and support the current youth of the TLBT. Now, in 2021, Courtney’s daughter Morgan will be participating in Gold Merit for the first time. Advice from Courntey Lee, “I would recommend every TLBT kid participate in every program offered to them. You will look back on these days and be forever grateful.”
“ Building Future Leaders and Breeders of Tomorrow” TLBT OFFICER SPOTLIGHT: TLBT Officer Postion: Senior Director 1.) Why did you join TLBT? To be apart of a quality organization doing something I love, to try and help promote the Longhorn breed. 2.) What is your favorite Longhorn show and why? San Angelo because it’s really laid back and I enjoy being there. 3.) What is your favorite Longhorn color and pattern? My favorite Longhorn color would probably be red roan speckled. 4.) Where did you earn your first reward? What type of award? In February 2018 at the San Angelo stock show and rodeo, I won teen showmanship. 5.) What is your funniest TLBT moment? My funniest moment was when it was pouring down rain and my dad got drug out of the trailer through all of the muck. We laughed about it for hours. 6.) Do you enjoy showing Longhorns? Why? Yes, I enjoy showing Longhorns because I love animals, and Longhorns are a really fun breed to show and care for.
KARLYE WILLIAMS
7.) Who has been your biggest influence while showing Longhorns? My biggest influence while showing Longhorns would be my dad. 8.) What have you learned while you have been showing Longhorns that has helped you grow as a person? I have learned the amount responsibility it takes to raise animals, and how much joy comes out of it. 9.) What is the best part about being a TLBT? The best part is meeting new people and making new friends. 10.) What is your favorite quote? “God has a reason for allowing things to happen. We may never understand His wisdom, But we simply have to trust His will.” -Psalm 37:5 11.) What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Peppermint 12.) What would you like your future career to be? A zoological veterinarian is what I would like my future career to be. 13.) If you could make a rule for a day and everyone had to follow it, what would it be? The rule that I would put into place for the day would be that all bad drivers stay home. 14.) If you could be any superhero who would you be? Why? Superwoman because I have always wanted to fly.

Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow TLBT OFFICER SPOTLIGHT: TLBT Officer Postion: Teen Director 1.) Why did you join TLBT? I wanted to be able to make a difference in another youths life just like so many people in this breed have done for me. 2.) What is your favorite Longhorn show and why? My favorite longhorn show is definitely the TLBGCA Brenham show. Everytime I go it feels like we all get to reconnect as a Longhorn family. 3.) What is your favorite Longhorn color and pattern? Definitely brindle or a good black and white calf will hit me hard when I see a good one. 4.) Where did you earn your first reward? What type of award? The first award I received was at the Edna Winterfest 3 years ago. It was second place in intermediate showmanship. 5.) Do you enjoy showing Longhorns? Why? I think the family type atmosphere about the Longhorn industry. Yeah we all want to win and everything but even if you want to and don’t end up on top you are still happy for whoever it was that just won whether you know them or not it’s an amazing experience. Same the other way if you win the other exhibitors are happy even though you know they’re bummed they didn’t win. 6.) What has been your biggest influence while showing Longhorns? Seeing my goals getting reached. Whether it’s not getting last in a hard class or placing in the top three in showmanship, there’s something about that that’s like “wow, I just did that” and pushes me to work harder so I am able to grow my goals and see them be accomplished.
56 | June 2021
SARAH HEIMEYER
7.) What have you learned while you have been showing Longhorns that has helped you grow as a person? Bouncing off of what I said about my influence in Longhorns. Longhorns have taught me so much but they’ve also helped me see if I put my mind to something and work hard I can do it. So I think just that you can’t not do anything and expect what you want to happen to go into fruition 8.) What is the best part about being a TLBT? One of my favorite parts about being a TLBT member is again like I said the atmosphere. You’re seeing these people at almost every show and you really do become family and grow close to a lot of them so just the positive atmosphere is one of my favorite things. 9.) What is your favorite quote? I’m a sucker for cheesy quotes so mine is “If your dreams don’t scare you they’re too small.” -Richard Branson 10.) What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Texas Pecan 11.) What would you like your future career to be? I’d like to become either a Texas Game Warden or pursue a career in wildlife management by being a ranch manager. 12.) If you could make a rule for a day and everyone had to follow it, what would it be? People cancelling plans at the last minute has always been one of my biggest pet peeves. And sadly, I myself am guilty of it. So, my law would be that if you have made promises or get together plans, you don’t get to cancel it. Unless it’s the biggest emergency that cannot be ignored, you are going to live up to your words. If you ditch your loved ones, there’s going to be a lot to pay. That, I believe, is going to make life so much simpler and easier for a lot of us.
