EDITOR’S NOTES TO THEIR HEALTH

This issue turned into a health feature instead of facilities, but it all goes hand in hand. Great facilities are of no use if your cattle are not healthy.

Had there been enough room in this issue the Scours article would have been followed by a pasture rotation article. Note the emphasis on clean dry pasture as the ideal place for calves. Scours is an easy issue to develop no matter how diligent you are so take a look at the article on pg, 18 for some tips on getting ahead of the problem.

The article on heel flies...well, don’t eat your lunch while reading it. It is in depth about the life cycle, migration and treatment issue of these pests and the larvae that travel through a cow’s system in an intriguing journey. If you’ve seen them running like crazy from bumble bee sized creatures or noticed bumps all along their backs you might want find some help starting on pg. 14.

There are a LOT of spring sale and futurity results in this issue. Even if you don’t think you want to buy or sell your Longhorns via a live auction, going to the sales are a good way to meet folks and get a fell for prices and what people are buying. Many sales have futurities in conjunction so you could get your production evaluated while having a great time. Our industry has grown to where there are shows, events and futurities spread throughout the year and in spots all across the U.S. and in other countries as well. If you want to participate look at the industry calender periodically to see what comes up in your travel range and get out there. You can find events listed on the last page of Trails Magazine every month or on the industry calendar on www.tlbaa.org.

Heel Flies and Grubs

Back in the 1970’s when cattlemen used organophosphate products for grub and lice control, it was rare to find any cattle with warbles. After organophosphates were taken off the market, this began to change. Today cattle are often plagued with heel flies again, in many geographic regions.

Kelly M. Loftin, Ph.D., BCE (Professor/Extension Entomologist, University of Arkansas Cralley-Warren Research Lab, Fayetteville) says there are two species of cattle grubs in the U.S – the common cattle grub, Hypoderma lineatum and the northern cattle grub, Hypoderma bovis. The parasitic form is a larva (called a grub), an internal parasite of cattle. The free-living and reproducing adult cattle grub fly is often called a heel or warble fly. Hypodermiasis is the condition caused by an infestation of cattle with the larvae of these flies. Cattle grub flies are true flies (order Diptera and family Oestridae).

Heel flies can have an adverse impact on cattle; the animals fail to graze normally during the warble or heel fly season because of gadding (running with their tails in the air, bent over the back). They seek shade or stand in water to avoid the flies.

18 mm (½ to ¾ inch) long. The adult flies do not feed and will mate and lay eggs within their adult lifespan of about five days. Female flies attach eggs to lower hairs on the animal’s body, especially the legs. One female can lay from 500 to 800 eggs, but only a few survive. Fortunately, natural larval mortality is very high with only 5% of the eggs that are laid giving rise to adults,” says Loftin.

ADULT CATTLE GRUBS RESEMBLE

BEES AND ARE ABOUT 11 TO 18 MM (½ TO ¾ INCH) LONG.

The life cycle of the heel fly (and how they pester and irritate cattle when laying their eggs) varies a little, depending on the geographic region and climate in terms of when they emerge and the time frame for their egg-laying activity. “The heel fly/cattle fly will have only one generation per year and the life cycle requires about one year to complete,” says Loftin. About 8 to 11 months of their life cycle is spent as a parasite within its host.

“Adult flies live less than one week. In untreated cattle, the average number of cattle grub larvae range from 5 to 20 per infested animal, however up to 250 per animal has been recorded,” he says.

“Adult cattle grubs resemble bees and are about 11 to

The egg laying activity with the flies buzzing around the legs frightens cattle and they respond by running with their tails in the air, bent over the back. “This behavior is called gadding. The northern cattle grub fly, also known as a ‘bomb fly’ is more prone to cause the gadding than the common cattle grub fly likely because of the way it darts under the animals,” he explains.

Larvae emerge from the eggs in about four to six days and crawl down the hair to which the egg was attached, and burrow into the skin. “These firststage larvae migrate through the connective tissue over a period of 4 to 6 months. During this travel, the larvae secrete digestive enzymes that aid them in this migration. Common cattle grubs then congregate in the connective tissue of the esophagus. The northern cattle grubs congregate in tissue surrounding the spinal column. At these congregation sites the larvae feed and increase their size by up to 6-fold,” he says.

“Then these larvae, which are still first-stage larvae, resume migration to their final destination in the back on the animal. Once they reach the back, they create a hole in the hide for breathing. At this time, the host responds to the larvae by forming a cyst which is called

a warble. Warbles are visible and can be detected by touch. The warble isolates the larva within the host and provides a rich source of nutrients necessary for the larvae to continue to grow and molt into a second and then a third-stage larvae,” he says.

“After the third-stage larva matures to a size of up to 15 mm (slightly more than half an inch long), it exits the warble through the breathing hole, and drops to the ground to pupate. The larva (grub) spends a month and a half to 2 months in the warbles on the back of its host. The pupal stage lasts from 1 to 3 months and is basically the stage where the larva transform into an adult.”

Adult flies begin emerging from pupae in the summer, to mate and seek a host to lay eggs. The first grubs to show up in the back of cattle will appear 32 to 34 weeks after the egg were laid and will continue to arrive for about 6 more weeks.

There is no way to control heel flies or provide relief for cattle except to reduce or eliminate the immature stages (within the animals) to make a difference next year. If your neighbors don’t treat their cattle you may still have some heel flies attacking yours.

“Cattle grubs are best controlled with endectocides (macrocyclic lactones) applied either as a pour-on or an injection. Generally, younger animals host more cattle grubs than older animals. Older cattle that have been previously exposed to grubs are usually host to fewer grubs, as an acquired resistance, by the immune system,” says Loftin.

Heel flies can have an adverse impact on cattle; the animals fail to graze normally during the warble or heel fly season because of gadding. They seek shade or stand in water to avoid the flies. This reduction in grazing activity reduces milk production and weight gains, with poor growth weight on calves.

“Slaughter losses result when grubby areas must be trimmed from the carcass and from the decreased value of hides containing grub holes. Economic losses due to cattle grub involve both the parasitic larvae infesting cattle and the adult female fly that cause cattle to run wildly to avoid the flies’ attempts to lay eggs,” he says.

TREATMENT

Treatment for grubs involves proper timing of the effective drugs, since there can be adverse effects of treating at the wrong time or year--when the larvae are surrounding the esophagus or spinal column.

“Proper timing of cattle grub treatment is very critical. Treatments applied too early may miss some eggs that were laid later in the heel fly season and treatment too late may cause adverse in cattle from grubs dying in the esophagus or gullet. In Arkansas, we recommend treating for cattle grubs after August 1 but

before October 15,” says Loftin.

“The recommended drugs for controlling cattle grubs in beef cattle are ivermectin, doramectin, moxidectin or eprinomectin pour-ons, or injections of ivermectin, doramectin or moxidectin. In lactating dairy cattle, producers can use eprinomectin pour-on or a moxidectin injection,” he says.

CATTLE

“If cattle grubs are treated when the larvae are near the esophagus (for common cattle grub) or spinal column (northern cattle grub) and die, the host reaction to the decomposing remains of the grubs may produce tissue swelling. This swelling can result in bloat and suffocation in the case of common cattle grubs or paralysis in the case of northern cattle grubs,” he explains.

veterinarian consultation and treatment is essential,” he says.

GRUBS CAN BE FATAL TO THE HOST IF TREATED FOR LARVALCATTLE GRUB INFESTATIONS AT THE WRONG TIME WITH A SYSTEMIC PRODUCT.

“Do not apply a systemic insecticide or endectocide after the cattle grub treatment cut-off date for your area. For example, the treatment cutoff date ranges from late August in Florida to November for states such as Ohio and Nebraska. In Arkansas, the treatment cutoff date is October 15. Consult your state’s extension service for your area’s specific cutoff. In cases of adverse reactions to dying grubs in the gullet or spinal column,

Cattle grubs can be fatal to the host if treated for larval cattle grub infestations at the wrong time with a systemic product. “Basically, if cattle were not treated for cattle grubs at the end of heel fly activity do not treat with a systemic insecticide or endectocide during the late fall, winter or spring. For example, you have a herd that was not treated for cattle grubs with a systemic insecticide at the end of the heel fly season and the herd becomes infested with lice in late winter, apply a non-systemic insecticide ONLY to treat the louse infestation. I recommend non-systemic products such as Clean-up Pour-on (permethrin and diflubenzuron) or Cylence Pour-on (cyfluthrin) when treating for lice, if the previous cattle grub treatment is unknown.”

Scours Prevention and the Importance of Treating Scours Early

The most common illness in young calves, causing the most expense for cattle producers, is scours (diarrhea). Economic losses include the costs for treatment as well as death losses. In beef calves, one study showed that 5.5% of calves born in the U.S. die from diarrhea in the first 3 weeks of life.

Some years are worse than others, especially for the herds that calve early when weather might necessitate confining the cows or first-calf heifers for close observation and shelter, with more contamination of the environment. Intestinal infection and diarrhea can be caused by bacteria, viruses or protozoa. The most common bacteria and protozoa are often present in the environment, while the viruses like rotavirus and coronavirus only live within the animals and are generally shed in feces in small numbers by carrier cows. Calves get exposed when they ingest contaminated feed or water, suck a dirty udder or lie in manure and then lick themselves.

Whether newborn and young calves get sick depends on many factors including the “dose” of pathogens (how many pathogens the calves are exposed to), the level of immunity in the individual calf, and stress— since stress tends to hinder the immune system and make the animal more vulnerable to infections. Good weather, clean environment, and stress reduction can help reduce the incidence of scours, along with making sure every calf gets adequate good-quality colostrum at birth.

number of pathogens (that the calf is exposed to) that cause scours.

To help the calf be more resistant, there must be a high level of antibodies in the cow’s colostrum and the calf must nurse enough colostrum, very quickly after birth, to be adequately protected. If E. coli or viral scours is a problem in your herd, you want to make sure your cows are vaccinated for those pathogens, upto-date on their vaccinations, and ideally vaccinated relatively close to when they start calving. Then the cow will have the highest possible level of antibodies in her bloodstream, which means she will also have high levels in her colostrum.

Make sure the cow is in good body condition before calving, with proper nutrients. This will also ensure that she can produce the best quality and largest amount of colostrum. As a rule of thumb, heifers’ colostrum is never quite as good because they haven’t had as much chance to become exposed to as many things and to build as strong immunity as an older cow. Their calves may be most at risk for getting scours.

If for some reason a newborn calf can’t nurse its dam, provide high-quality colostrum from another cow on your own ranch. If you don’t have any colostrum available, use one of the high-quality commercial substitutes. Make sure it’s one with high levels of IgG (antibody molecules) and made from actual colostrum rather than one that was made by extracting antibodies from milk or blood.

The other part of the battle is to make sure your calving area is as clean as possible. You don’t want cows in a wet, sloppy environment where they will have manure all over their teats. Otherwise that first mouthful of colostrum the calf gets will be loaded with pathogens. It’s always a race between pathogens and the antibodies in the colostrum, regarding which gets to the gut first. If the calf is nuzzling around the dirty cow, trying to suck on her brisket or flank or tries a few times on a dirty teat before he actually latches on, the pathogens get a head start in this race.

A lot depends on the time of year you calve, regarding how clean the environment might be. If weather isn’t cold (necessitating grouping the cows for shelter for newborns) you can spread the herd out on clean pastures. Some people still confine their calving heifers, however, for closer observation and ability to give assistance if necessary.

There are two important aspects in scours prevention. You can try to make sure the calf is more resistant to the pathogens, and also try to reduce the

Calving on green grass is ideal, but if you have to calve early to have cows calved out and possibly bred before they go to summer pasture, or to have bull calves old enough to sell as yearlings in a spring sale, you must deal with having them confined. It may still

be relatively clean if the ground is frozen or there’s a lot of snow. If manure stays frozen, cows stay cleaner, but once they have manure on their teats, it’s a tough situation. Even if you try to keep confined cows clean by putting out more bedding, you still can’t win. Cows are hard to keep clean when it’s wet and sloppy. This can even be a factor with fall calving, if there’s a lot of fall rain and mud.

Reducing exposure to pathogens is important—calving on clean ground (not where the cow herd spent the winter being fed) and not having newborn calves in the same group with calves that are several weeks old. The Sand Hills calving method, in which the cows that have not yet calved are moved to new, clean pasture every 2 weeks, is one way to help prevent scours in young calves. The goal is to keep pathogens away from the youngest calves.

If young calves are exposed to high levels of patho gens, they usually get scours, even if they have some

immunity with the antibodies they received from colostrum. A healthy calf, with good antibody levels from the dam’s colostrum, can generally fight off the low “dose” of pathogens encountered in a relatively clean environment. This changes, however, if a few calves get sick and spread massive amounts of pathogens.

Many cows shed a few pathogens in their feces, but sick calves have very high numbers of pathogens and become super shedders in their feces. They contaminate the environment quicker and with higher numbers of pathogens. This puts other calves at a much higher risk for disease. Younger calves are most at risk.

IMPORTANCE OF EARLY TREATMENT

Early detection of illness is important, not only so you can start treating the calf with fluids and electrolytes before dehydration becomes severe (and give the calf a chance to bounce back and recover quicker) but also to help prevent the

spread of disease to other calves. Early treatment is crucial for that calf, because you have much more chance of turning thing around with oral fluids, before he is so sick and dehydrated that he needs IV fluids.

As soon as you discover that a calf is sick, bring him and his mama in from the pen or pasture and isolate them, away from the herd. This way you can get hands on the calf for treatment multiple times a day with oral fluids. A very young calf may need fluid 3 or 4 times a day to prevent severe dehydration.

The worst thing you can do is leave that calf and his mama out in the pen or pasture with the herd. You might

think he’s not sick enough to bring in for treatment (and simply “doctor” him once or twice out if the pasture if you can catch him) but even if he is still bright and alert, if he has diarrhea he is shedding millions of pathogens all over the place, for other calves to pick up. A scours “wreck” can happen quickly, if it starts to go through the group because a few calves are shedding large numbers of pathogens in a confined area.

Treatment for scours is mainly supportive—giving the calf the fluids and electrolytes he is losing through diarrhea, along with a bit of energy, especially if the calf is too sick to nurse mama. In some types of scours (such as coronavirus, which completely destroys the villa—the tiny fingerlike projections in the intestine that provide more surface area for absorbing fluid and nutrients) the calf is unable to utilize fluid and nutrients in the gut. Everything just passes on through in the diarrhea. If you can’t turn this around quickly, the calf becomes weak and dies. He may need IV fluids to save him.

Knowing the cause of scours can help direct proper treatment, but even though viral scours do not respond to antibiotics, your veterinarian may prescribe certain antibiotics just to prevent secondary bacterial infections. The virus weakens the calf’s defenses, damages the gut lining, and opens the way for bacterial invasion. Many cases of scours are mixed infections, including bacteria and sometimes protozoa along with the original viral cause. It is important to work with your veterinarian on ways to minimize incidence of scours in your herd, and to administer appropriate treatment for the cases that do occur.

Scours is a problem that magnifies quickly—especially if conditions are just right for the “bug” such as wet weather, crowded contaminated pastures or any kind of stress in the calves. Anything you can do for prevention is important, along with isolating and treating those first cases you find. Early detection and treatment will go a long way in helping reduce the spread of this challenging problem.

As the effects of drought, tornadoes, fires, floods and economy start to catch up with everyone, the thought of advertising is often the last thing anyone wants to consider. The truth is, however, that you don’t have to spend thousands per year or only buy full page ads to be effective and help sell more Longhorns (or beef products, or your business services).

1. The Buddy System. You do not have to be partners on a bull to have group ads and split the cost. Find a common denominator that makes it make sense to share an ad space and split costs. Maybe you live in the same region, are members of an affiliate that will coop pages, or you using bulls in common and want to show off progeny even if you are not partners on the bull.

Example 1. A breeder in Tennessee wants more exposure for the region. He speaks with friends and finds two others that would like to advertise but it is cost prohibitive. They agree to buy a full page for 12 times in the coming year. The total cost would be $8,400 or $700/month. But if you split the page, it becomes $234 for each person for a total of $2,808 each for the year.

(Note: if it is a themed page, for example a Longhorns in the East or Southeast or Blue Ridge, you could even rotate what breeders were featured on it and then more people get the chance to save.)

Example 2. An Affiliate agrees to buy a two page spread for $1400. They divide that space up into 12 ad spaces and they sell that to their members for $150 each. This covers the cost of the ad and gives the affiliate a few extra dollars. Each person buying a space gets to promote whatever they wish. By being part of a full or two page ad it pushes their little ad to the front of the magazine and makes it stand out more.

2. Buy a Trails Breeders Guide Ad. The cost of a Trails Breeders Guide ad remains $365 for one year. Having that little business card in place gets you a 12time rate (lowest) on any size ad you may place during that year even if you only run a regular ad one time. Also, when people call looking for breeders in their area, we tell them they can look at the breeders guide in order to avoid any seeming partiality on our part as staff. So for $1/day, or $30 and change per month, it is still the best buy of all.

3. Get on the “Breeders Near You” Map page of the the TLBAA website for $120/year. For $10/ month that makes you easily found by people who are

looking into Longhorns for the first time or hoping to make connections in their area. It not only can contain a link to your website as well as contact information, but pins you on a Google Map for them to see precisely where you are.

4. Consider sponsorships. Many events in the industry have low level sponsorships that will at least get you name recognition on signage, in ads or during event promotions. While the benefits of this may not be instant, the more people see and hear your name the more credible you become as a business. This is true within the Longhorn industry and sponsoring events in your community as well.

Example 1: A futurity is offering class sponsorships for $200. They put your name/ranch on the class in the program book, may offer ad space to you for free, announce you as sponsor during the event and allow you to be in the photo with the winner of that class which is then put in publications and on social media with the results. Many events have even smaller sponsorships available that will at least get you on signage and mention at the event.

Example 2: A school sells sponsor spots (or ads) in the football programs. Now you have a captive audience every time the whistle blows and they pass time thumbing through that program for something to do. Not only do you stand out because you are selling Longhorns and/or Longhorn beef, but you get a positive image boost from supporting the youth in your area. This holds true for yearbook ads, band fund-raisers, you name it in the community.

5. If it’s FREE, do it! This covers a wide gamut from posting a flyer on a public bulletin board to reaching out to your local media to see if they would be interested in photos or material on Texas Longhorn cattle.

Trails Magazine has a section called ”News On The Trail” that you can submit articles to any time you host visitors at your ranch, or take a Longhorn to a public event or if your ranch/herd gets featured in the media, even if it is only a photo with a caption. All you have to do to see if your news fits the section is send an email to myra@tlbaa.org. This invite extends to any activities your children do, even if they simply enter a Longhorn drawing in an art competition or feature Longhorns in a school project. Let others be inspired by your efforts while showing that you are serious about the Longhorn business.

If you want help figuring out things that would help you get out there without going broke buying advertising, we are always happy to brainstorm with you and come up with an affordable approach to getting your name out there.

SATELLITE AWARD WINNER

An award will be given to the host of the satellite who has the most animals measured at their location that are NOT owned by the satellite host. Animals that are owned in partnership by the host do not count.

It will be decided by number of measurement entries, not by number of animals.

As an example, an animal entered and measured for composite will count three times.

GET OF SIRE AND PRODUCE OF DAM

• Get of Sire and Produce of Dam will each offer a Junior Division and a Senior Division.

• Each Division is based on the age of the offspring of the animal entered. The Junior Division consists of offspring between the ages of two and five years of age. The Senior Division consists of offspring six years and older.

• Sires must have three offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.

• Dams must have two offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.

• Both living and deceased bulls and cows can be entered since entries are based on measurements of offspring.

• Scoring for each animal will be computed by adding the values of TTT, TH and Composite of all three offspring for a bull or both offspring for a cow. The bull or cow with the highest value of the total added measurements amongst offspring will be the winner.

• Animals do not need to be present to compete in this class – can be measured at a satellite or in .

• Only breeding animals (Bulls or Cows) can compete as offspring.

• Offspring may be produced by natural breeding, artificial insemination or embryo transfer.

The TLBAA HSC Futurity is set up by age divisions to allow breeders the opportunity to exhibit the total package animals that represent their breeding operation.

• There is a 75% cash payout based on the class size. Payout will go to the top third of the class.

• Animals must be entered in at least one horn measurement contest.

• Animals will enter the ring based on age. Youngest to oldest. When the animal being exhibited walks into the ring, the 5 judge panel will be given the animals DOB.

• With the 5 judge panel, the high score and the low score will be thrown out and the remaining three judges will be added together for the final score. In the event of a tie there will be a tie breaker judge selected in advance. That judge’s score will be the tie breaker in the event of a tie.

• Animals must measure in at least one measurement class to participate in Futurity as well as be eligible for a Superior Award.

ULTIMATE COW & BULL AWARD

• One bull and one female will be chosen based on popular vote.

• Animals must be present in Oklahoma City to be eligible.

• Ballots will be available at the TLBAA desk during the event for voting.

HORN SHOWCASE SUPERIOR AWARD

This innovative award showcases our most elite animals that possess the total package we all strive for. To achieve the Superior Award, animals are required to compete in the horn measurement contest, as well as be judged on conformation in the Horn Showcase Futurity.

To be win the Superior Award, an animal must place first in both a measurement class and their Futurity class.

Winners will have a trophy mailed to them after the event.

BULL ALLEY

• Bulls must be TLBAA A.I. certified and have an A.I. certified number to sell semen and participate in most straws sold.

• Bulls that are living must be present in Oklahoma City; deceased bulls may be entered for semen sales only. (Deceased bulls may have their offspring on site to represent them)

• Each owner should bring a semen tank with semen for sale or have semen sent to Champion Genetics. Must have 50 straws minimum available. If less than 50 straws available, seller must pay shipping to buyer.

• No minimum straw purchases allowed.

• Bulls must be entered in a measurement class.

• All semen sales are subject to a 7% commission.

NextGen Marketing Contest Results

Submitted by The Source

Traveling to Longhorn events across the US and having a background in youth focused events, we noticed a need for youth involvement opportunities that do not require an animal. That realization led us to the creation of the NextGen Marketing Contest. The contest consisted of two parts: Conversation Starter and Graphic Design. The purposes were simply to encourage youth to be able to quickly communicate information about Texas Longhorn cattle and to allow youth to create marketing materials promoting their cattle and the Texas Longhorn breed. Participants joined in from as far away as Wisconsin with ages from 4-21. NextGen was developed to encourage the participation of youth Longhorn enthusiasts from all aspects of the breed and we hope to continue motivating future breeders to be involved through this and other opportunities.  Thank you to each of the participants, their families, our judges, and the Battle on the Prairie for joining with us to make this event happen.

Annual Butler Breeders Gathering & Meeting

The 2024 Butler Texas Longhorn Breeders Annual Gathering & Meeting was held on the weekend of April 19th & 20th. The weekend was filled with fellowship, fun, food and great Butler Texas Longhorns. The fun started on Friday evening as breeders gathered at the El Conquistador restaurant in Hillsboro, Texas. Everyone enjoyed a good meal, drinks, and conversation with their fellow Butler Longhorn enthusiast. Some of these breeders only get to see each other twice a year, at this gathering and at the annual sale. After several hours of good conversation everyone adjourned to the hotel to await Saturday’s activities.

This year’s Gathering & Meeting was hosted by Stan & Sandi Tidwell and Russell & Felicia Hooks at the Tidwell’s beautiful Falls Creek Ranch in Itasca, Texas. From Hillsboro the ranch is just a short drive north up I 35. Guest started arriving at the ranch around 9 am to a cool and damp morning with off and on rain showers coming throughout the day. The weather didn’t dampen the spirits of this die hard group of dedicated Butler Breeders. There were breeders in attendance from Iowa, Maryland, Louisiana, Oklahoma and across Texas. The activities were held in the comfortable setting of a nice dry barn with the Falls Creek Butler herd pastured just a few feet away from the barn. Guest were able to view the herd in between the waves of rain showers. Those in attendance were excited to see all the Falls Creek Butler herd which consist of numerous high sellers from the Annual Sale and also includes the senior herd sire, FA Super Star (co-owned with Frank Anderson). However, I think it might have been the

three clones of the legendary Little Ace Swamp Guinea that created the most excitement. It’s hard to tell them apart, they are almost identical to each other.

Guest were treated to a catered lunch of beef and chicken fajitas with all the fixings. Then it was time for a little business and then some fun. Kaso Kety, one of the founding members of the Butler Breeders Invitational Sale addressed the group about the upcoming sale. The sale has been held for 26 consecutive years and this year will mark the 27th year. The sale has survived years of droughts, floods, hurricanes and Covid. Butler Breeders are a lot like the cattle, they are tough and strong. Kaso gave a few updates on the sale and encouraged breeders to step up with quality consignments so that there would be a strong offering at this year’s sale. Next

Russell Hooks gave a talk about the importance of taking good photos of your consignments. He said “you only have one opportunity to make a good first impression with your consignment”. Russell provided some helpful tips for taking that great promotional photo, which is even more important in today’s world of social media and online bidding. Michael Bennett addressed the group about the Annual Online Butler Breeders’ Futurity. He

discussed a few ways they plan to streamline the awards process on the Friday before the sale and that the chuck wagon cook would be back to serve dinner after the awards presentation. He encouraged everyone to start working on their entries.

There were drawings for some really cool door prizes throughout the day. With the big prize being a leather binder with the Butler Brand on it and containing historic articles that have been written about the Butler bloodline over the years. Russell conducted a Butler Bloodline/Sale Trivia Contest with custom tumblers featuring some of Falls Creeks top Butler animals as awards for those who answered correctly. The group had fun competing for these awards. Some of the questions were pretty hard. Jason Christa had a pretty tough question, but thankfully he got it right and won his wife the tumbler she wanted with a picture of one of their cows that now calls Falls Creek home.

We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to the Tidwell’s and the Hooks’ for making this a great and fun time of fellowship with our Butler Family. Looking forward to seeing everyone that the 27th Annual Butler Breeders Invitational Sale in Lockhart, Texas on Labor Day Weekend.

TLBAA Staff Enjoys Sampling Longhorn Beef Sticks

Thank you to Mark Hubbell of Hubbell Longhorns, Hastings, MI for sending the TLBAA staff a sampling of Longhorn Beef sticks for a “taste test”. While it was agreed by all that the sticks were tasty, flavor preference varied greatly. It was interesting that unanimously the most unlikely flavor, Dill Pickle, got a thumbs up from us all!

The TLBAA staff are equal opportunity taste testers. If you ever need some feedback on your products we’re your team.

EAST TEXAS LONGHORN ASSOCIATION

AFFILIATE UPDATES

The ETLA would like to take a moment to honor our 2024 Graduating Seniors and their Senior Sale Animals.

Timothy Ryan Hatler, 17, of Weatherford, Texas, will be graduating from his home institution this spring. After becoming involved in the TLBAA in the fall of 2021, Tim has spent a lot of his time learning everything he can about longhorns and being the best breeders and exhibitor he can be. “I have packed as much learning and involvement in as I can in the few years I have been involved.” While at shows, Tim not only helps his family, but tries to help as many people as he can, as much as he can, whether it’s washing, feeding, scooping poop, or exhibiting. Additionally, he also volunteers to help the people running the shows wherever needed. While exhibiting, he has been fortunate enough to have placed well with his families’ own cattle. Outside of attending shows, he has also helped at other breeders’ ranches whenever they have needed assistance, whether it’s looking after cattle or cleaning up after storms. “I have also helped my younger siblings learn to care for the cattle an become better showmen.”

Tim plans to become an ag diesel mechanic attending either Navarro college and going through their John Deere Tech Program, or Universal Technical Institute and completing their UT Diesel Program. Through both programs he will be prepared to work on today and tomorrow’s equipment as well as learn to cope with technological advancements in the farm equipment industry. Additionally, UTI o ers online course-work that enables students to have access to longer lab time and greater opportunities for hands on coursework. Tim also plans to stay connected with the longhorn breed and show industry, “I plan to keep breeding longhorns and perfecting my herd to the ultimate goal of great conformation and horn. As well as participating in open shows.”

Tim has been exhibiting and promoting his senior sale heifer, EJS Plum’s Little Stella. Her date of birth is April 11, 2023. She is sired by Plum Nearly, a black and white bull who has produced stunning o spring like Stella and measured 82.5 on January 29, 2024, at 3 1/2 years old. Stella’s dam is Sanddollar Superstar. Stella is an amazing one-of-a-kind heifer. Her color, structure, horn direction, and sweet personality is something special. Stella is a futurity style heifer with amazing horn direction and growth for her age. She has a straight topline and clean front end. She’s very feminine with flashy color as well as good depth of body and spring of rib.

Tim says he hopes to leave an impact on the youth showman to always lend a helping hand to breeders, small and large, as well as help each other because we, the youth, are always in it together. A piece of advice he’d like to share is to “Remember to take it seriously but make sure to have fun with it. I have seen so many showmen take it too seriously and get stressed out and overwhelmed instead of learning and enjoying the experiences that comes with longhorns. The longhorn breed has given me many valuable lessons teaching me responsibility, dedication, teamwork, organization, and problem-solving skills in my daily life, just to name a few.

Message

Howdy!

What a year it’s been! For a handful of us, this year is the end of our TLBT adventure. As we finish out our youth show days, let us celebrate the end - they precede new beginnings. Let us celebrate our accomplishments, cherish the small moments and always look forward to building a better tomorrow.

I challenge each TLBT member to take all you have learned from every camp, show, banquet, competition and use that in your journey. Whether you are graduating this year, next year or in 10 years, don’t ever stop the progress of moving forward. Improve upon your skills, breed even better cows, educate more people about Texas Longhorns and always strive to leave every situation better than when you began.

Congratulations to the Class of 2024!

Thanks & Gig’ Em -

What have you learned from showing Longhorns?

- I have learned a lot through the few years I have been showing as a youth showman. I have tried to learn as much as I can about the longhorn breed and showing as a youth showman, like showing, halter breaking, nutrition, history, and about longhorn beef. I have also learn valuable lessons through showing longhorns like how to have responsibility, dedication, teamwork, organization, and problem solving skills. As a youth showman, I’m still learning amazing new things everyday.

What/Who has been your biggest influence while showing Texas Longhorn Cattle?

- My biggest influence while showing Texas longhorns is my parents. They have pushed me to be the best version of myself and the best showman I can be. They have taught me so much and given me the right resources to learn everything I can and everything I know about this amazing breed of cattle. They are also the people who got me into breeding and showing longhorn cattle. My parents have been and are my biggest supporters through my life and through showing longhorn cattle.

What would you like to accomplish/pursue in your future endeavors? (For example, after high school or college)

- After finishing my schooling at the Navarro College John Deere Tech Program or UTI (Universal Technical Institute), I plan to start my career as an Ag Diesel Mechanic for John Deere. As well as helping my family with the family farm and growing my own longhorn herd, with the end goal of producing champion futurity style longhorn cattle with good confirmation, as well as a high amount of horn growth. I also plan to continue attending and exhibiting cattle at shows for both the TLBAA and ITLA.
