Just For Grins

This issue is a wrap-up of Longhorn Weekend. We appreciate the participation of the membership during the meetings, banquet, sale and shows. Fort Worth Stock Show is one of my favorite events that I get to be a part of and enjoy the cattle shows. It brings back great memories that I have participating and being with family and friends. I often wonder where I would be in the world without the ranching background I was honored to be a part of. The next issue of the Trails magazine will be April and May combined. The Red McCombs and Midwest Sale catalog will be accompanying this issue. The new TLBAA website is still moving ahead, and the launch date and advertising rates will be announced. Stay tuned!! Don’t forget our social media campaign is underway with our presence on Instagram and Twitter. We kept many Longhorn breeders and admirers updated throughout Longhorn Weekend. I encourage you to email, fax or mail your comments and suggestions to continue moving the Trails magazine in the right direction for our members and readers. See you down the road...

Chairman of the Board Todd McKnight, Treasurer John Parmley and CEO Barbara Linke gave updates, Association and Foundation reports through November 30 and the results of the 20132014 audit were shared. Longhorns, Affiliate Relations, Year End Awards and HORNS. An update was given on the Capital Campaign Building Fund for the future home of the TLBAA headquarters, Museum and Hall of Fame. We have currently raised $341,000 towards the $600,000 we need to have in order to start the building project. It was noted that 100% of the board has contributed to the building campaign. John Parmley was recognized for his leadership, time and effort that he and his committee have invested in getting the project to the point where we have plans and permit in hand. For more information on the building project, donation forms and answers to frequently asked questions, please visit the TLBAA.com web site and click on the Capital Campaign Building Fund button.

The results of the Division C Board of Directors elections can be found on the Officers & Directors page (pg. 14) including the new officers for the TLBAA Executive Committee. The Awards Banquet was held Friday evening, January 16th, culminating in the announcement of award winners. Check out pg. 26 for the results. We were pleased to have Sworn & Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller join us for the festivities. A complete wrap-up for the 2015 Longhorn Weekend can be found on pgs. 26-29. SENIOR DIVISION

I love this time of year so much because we are all so busy with stock shows, school and extra-curricular activities. During this busy time, there are a lot of opportunities TLBT members have to take advantage of. For graduating seniors, there is the Senior Heifer Sale that will be held at the 2015 World Show to raise scholarship money. You pick one of the females you have exhibited, advertise it as well as yourself― what college you’ll be attending, what you plan to do in the future, and so on― and then sale her this summer. For more information, contact Kevin Rooker. I highly recommend being a part of this, as it is a great chance to improve your marketing skills, public speaking, and, most importantly, help with the cost of college. Also keep in mind that there are other scholarships TLBT members may qualify for, such as the Bright Futures Scholarship and the Mosser Family Memorial Scholarship Fund. Information for these can be found at tlbaa.org and texaslonghornheritagefoundation.org. At the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo this past January, we held our second General Membership Meeting of the show year. Some of the things discussed were our Kindle Raffle to raise money for our Youth World Show Prizes, a Youth Affiliate Presidents’ Clinic that will take place at World Show, and ideas for recruiting new membership. The next general membership meeting will be held at our national show in June, where we will elect the 2015/2016 show year’s officers. I hope to see all of y’all soon at upcoming Longhorn events, and congratulations to all competitors who have won previously. Until next time, stay safe and have fun!

Castrating Male Cattle Timing and Methods

By Heather Smith Thomas

There are several ways to castrate calves and bulls. Regardless of the method, it’s less stressful for the animal at a young age. It’s also better for the buyer of these animals if they are steers rather than young bulls. W. Mark Hilton, Clinical Professor, Beef Production Medicine, Purdue University, says there are setbacks in growth—and health risks—if the animal is castrated at a later age. “There is nothing positive about castrating them late. The health is better when castrated early. Carcass quality is better. The welfare of the calf is better. Profit for the feedlot is better. There is no advantage to leaving them intact,” says Hilton.

The first one he tried to do was a struggle. “These were 700 pound calves, and I’m trying to castrate the first one standing up in the chute. The owner was a strong man and he couldn’t hold the calf; it was kicking and I was trying to search up in there for the testicles and realized I was going to get killed doing it. So for the other 19 I gave them a tranquilizer and laid them down and cut them like a horse, lying down. This was an extra expense to the owner,” says Hilton. “But if done correctly, I feel that using rubber bands on baby calves is an acceptable method. The research shows there is no difference in how the calves respond

There is generally no problem with using rubber bands on young calves, preferably less than 3 days of age – if you can make sure you have both testicles. “The idea that you can have better gains on calves as bulls because of testosterone is a fallacy. There are studies that show that a calf must be about 40 weeks of age before he gets a big boost from the testosterone, and that’s about 10 months! It’s not fair to that animal to castrate him that late,” he says. CASTRATION METHODS “I tell my clients that there are generally no problems with using rubber bands on young calves, preferably less than 3 days of age—if you can make sure you have both testicles. As a veterinarian, I have castrated hundreds of calves that had either one or both testicles retained after someone did a sloppy job or applying a rubber band. It’s no fun, for the veterinarian or for the calf, because of all the scar tissue in there; it’s a tough surgical procedure to castrate the older calf with retained testicle(s). I give them tranquilizers and lay them down for this surgery,” says Hilton. “One of the first cases I did in practice was a nightmare. The owner had bought a group of about 20 big calves from a new rancher who had tried to band the calves as babies and missed them all. The former owner reimbursed the guy for everything, including my costs and $50 per calf for the weight loss they experienced from the castration.”

32

compared to cutting them, if the bands are put on early. It’s also easiest for the person doing it when the calves are small; the calves are much easier to catch and handle at a day or two of age, compared to when they are a little older,” he says. “After a week of age, I suggest using the knife. The band on older calves causes a long-term painful experience. With a knife, the pain is very temporary. With a band, the worst pain may be days later, especially if there is some festering and infection around the area of the band.” The important thing is to do it properly, whether cutting or banding. “A new producer who’s never done it before should ask for help. A veterinarian or a stockman who has been doing it for years can easily walk you through the procedure,” says Hilton. Cleanliness is important, whether cutting or banding. The scrotum should be clean, and the instruments should be clean. If there is mud or manure on the calf’s scrotum, clean it off. Make sure the area where the calves will be lying around afterward is clean and dry. “Some farmers postpone castrating calves at birth if the environment is muddy/dirty. They will write down the numbers of the ones that didn’t get done, and cut them later. It’s not a good idea to castrate calves and

have them lying down in mud and manure,” says Hilton. Chemical castration has been done with some calves. “I was in private practice when ChemCast® came out. We used it in some herds and it worked fine, but it never really caught on across the industry. It took longer to do it than cutting the calf,” he says. ANIMAL WELFARE CONCERNS “We have to think about humane considerations for the calves. Just because we’ve done something for 30 or 40 years doesn’t mean it’s the best way. I have been a veterinarian for 30 years, and I change how I do things every year. I try to learn better ways to do them. I think back to when I was a kid on the farm, or my first years as a veterinarian and how I did some things and just shake my head. But at that time we didn’t know any better. After we learn better, we need to do better. The calf deserves the best that we have. We are the caretaker and have a big responsibility to that animal. Just because we’ve done things a certain way for many years doesn’t mean it’s the best way,” says Hilton. The Canadian livestock industry is looking at requiring pain medication when castrating older animals. “As we get more research on this, our industry in the U.S. may go this route, too, utilizing pain management on these animals, similar to what we do when castrating a horse,” he says. DON’T WAIT Since the procedure is so much easier on baby calves, there is no excuse for waiting until they are older, unless you intended to keep them as bulls and then decide to make steers out of the bottom end of the bull calves. Unless they are still young enough to go into a feedlot as steers, it may not be worth the effort and risk of castrating them. “In my own herd, I had two bulls this past year that I didn’t get sold as bulls (about 1400 pound animals) so I just took them to slaughter for freezer beef. The resulting beef was excellent,” says Hilton. If a seedstock producer has a group of weanlings, however, that don’t quite make the grade as bulls, these need to be castrated before going into the feedlot. Other than this situation, there is no rea-

-- continued from pg. 32 son to wait on castration. “It doesn’t make sense to wait. There should be more incentive to producers to do it early. Part of the problem is that bull calves are not discounted enough at market. Sometimes there is not enough economic incentive for stockmen to do a better job,” he says. “But to me, we can’t just look at the dollars. If you are selling a 500-pound calf, instead of looking at the money you lost because he’s a bull rather than a steer, you should be considering the calf himself and realizing that you did wrong for that calf—and the buyer.” The calf will suffer more, castrated later, and the buyer takes more risk. Castrating calves late always creates more health risk. “As an example, I had one client last year who got into a problem because of the weather and his late

crop planting season. He was busy planting corn when he ordinarily would be working the calves, and then the harvest was late. This affected his weaning date, and he didn’t get any calves castrated or vaccinated before weaning. He got clear into November so when he put the calves through the chute for their first vaccination he castrated them at that time—at 500-600 pounds. He put them back out on pasture with their mothers, on rather poor fall pasture with limited nutrition,” says Hilton. “He weighed the calves, to get their weaning weights, when he vaccinated and castrated them. Two weeks later, when he brought them in again for their final vaccination and weaned them, the calves had not gained any weight during that period.” Some of them became sick. If there aren’t enough calories for the

calf to grow, nutrients for the immune system become a lower priority for that calf’s body. “About 35% of those calves became ill with respiratory disease after weaning, because the vaccines didn’t do any good. The vaccines didn’t work because the calves’ immune systems were compromised by inadequate nutrition, and the stress of castration, weaning, etc. It takes protein and energy for the body to heal, so castration was one more challenge. If those calves had been castrated earlier in life they wouldn’t have had that additional stress at weaning, and might not have had so much problem with respiratory disease. The vaccine might have done more good,” says Hilton. “This was an example of the compounding effects we see with disease problems. Many small negatives lead to a big problem.”

TLBAA Breed Advisory Committee’s

MARCH Herd Management Guide FALL Calving:

1. Continue supplemental feeding as recommended. During the last 30-60 days of gestation, females require 1.8-2.0 pounds of total protein daily from grass and supplemental feeds to insure adequate fetal development and first milk production. During the first 3-4 months of lactation, nutrient requirements increase substantially. Warm season pasture grasses are dormant until mid-April and provide most of the energy needs, but limited protein, phosphorus and Vitamin A. Sufficient nutrients must be supplied to the lactating females in the form of protein and/or energy supplements as well as mineral and vitamin mixes to meet their nutrient requirements. Feeding 3-4 pounds of a 40 percent CP supplement, 4-6 pounds of a 30 percent CP supplement or 6-8 pounds of a 20 percent CP supplement per head per day should be adequate to meet most protein and energy needs. Choice of appropriate supplement (20 percent CP, 30 percent CP or 40 percent CP) should be based upon cheapest source of protein. Price per pound of protein may be determined by dividing the cost per pound of protein supplement by the percentage of crude protein in the supplement. A source of salt as well as a good commercial calcium:phosphorus mineral mix with added Vitamin A should be available on a free choice basis. If your cows are thin in body condition or pasture grass is limited due to overgrazing, then feeding a medium (8-10 percent crude protein) hay free choice plus 2-3 pounds of a 20 percent CP supplement daily or approximately 15-20 pounds of a high quality (15-17 percent crude protein) hay per day will provide an excellent source of energy and protein for the females. If winter pasture is available, then the females should not need additional energy or protein supplementation. 2. Continue to check first-calf heifers (due to calve) and pregnant cows daily for possibility of calving difficulties. Remember, assistance usually is not necessary, but be prepared. The rate of gain of a dead calf is not real high! 3. Many females, especially first-calf heifers, do not produce sufficient colostrum (first milk containing vital antibodies for the calf) and there is no way of knowing how much the calf has nursed. Baby calf scours are typically the result of inadequate consumption of colostrum during the early hours of a calf’s life. Clean calving areas and proper

38

attention to the newborn may reduce exposure to disease organisms and reduce incidence of scouring problems. Pay attention to detail. 4. Semen evaluate bulls. A standard breeding soundness exam should be conducted on all bulls prior to the start of the breeding season. 5. New bulls, if needed, should be purchased now, well ahead of the breeding season. Bulls should be allowed to acclimate to your ranch conditions. 6. Plan ahead to have sufficient breeding bulls to service all females. Mature bulls in single sire pastures should be able to service 30-50 females in a 60-90 day breeding season. Young yearling bulls can be excellent breeders, but reduce the number of females per bull to 15-25 head and limit the breeding season to 60 days. Special attention to maintaining good nutritional condition of the young bulls is needed. Yearling bulls should only run with other yearling bulls in multi-sire pastures. Older bulls will tend to establish a social dominance over young bulls, creating potential problems. 7. After calving and before breeding, vaccinate all cows for leptospirosis. Consult your veterinarian about the need to also vaccinate for vibriosis and anaplasmosis.

SPRING Calving:

1. Continue supplemental feeding program until good spring grass is available and calves are weaned. Lactating cows grazing dormant range grass require approximately 3-4 pounds of a 40 percent range cube or 6-8 pounds of a 20 percent range cube daily to meet their protein requirement. If winter pasture is available, forage intake should be sufficient to meet nutrient requirements of lactating females. 2. Vaccinate all heifer calves between 4 and 10 months of age for brucellosis. 3. As weaning is approaching, consider routine calf management while the calves are still on their dams to reduce stress often associated with weaning. Calves should be vaccinated with a 7-way Clostridial bacterin, vaccinated for IBR-P13-BVD and de-wormed. Bull calves should be castrated prior to weaning. 4. Consider limited creep feeding (16 percent crude protein) for calves nursing older cows, first-calf heifers, or any calves needing additional nutrition. Texas Longhorn Trails

T

he 4th edition was held on June 7, 2014 in Yamhill, OR. Skies were blue, temperatures comfortably in the mid 70’s and attendance was strong. In addition to a nice set of Longhorn cattle, visitors enjoyed great food, camaraderie and Daniel and Angelina Fey a fine glass of Oregon Pinot Noir. 32 out of 35 lots sold for an average of $1,600. This sale average is respectable, even more so under the consideration of a low consignment fee of $75 per lot and a moderate sale commission. Several first time buyers can be reported. The four highest selling lots all stayed in the state of Oregon which can be interpreted as a sign that local breeders see value in adding strong genetics to their herd in order to stay competitive on a bigger stage. The high seller was a 2009 Tejas Star daughter - ST Winter Star - consigned by St. Hilaire Longhorns, Yamhill, OR, and purchased by Alex Dees, CR Ranches from Harper, OR, for $3,000. 2nd highest selling lot was a 2012 JH Big Rigg daughter out of a full Boomerang C P sister – JH Sassy Riggs – consigned by Justin and Julie Hansen, Paskenta, CA, and purchased by Scott and Amelia Picker, Dundee, OR, for $2,900. We would like to thank all consignors, bidders and buyers for their participation. A special thank you goes to Auctioneer – John Walton, Sale Veterinarian-Dr. Richard Veeman, Brand Inspector – Laurie Van Roekel and all the helpers behind the scene, who made this event a success. Shadow Jubilee Wins National Western Stock Show in Denver! Submitted by Dickinson Cattle Co.

Shadow Jubilee -- January 24, 2015, won All Age Grand Champion Texas Longhorn Female at the 109th annual National Western Stock Show in Denver. This is the first time an over 90" T2T cow has been entered in national judged competition. The 2015 NWSS was co-sponsored by the TLBAA and ITLA through the local affiliates Rocky Mountain Texas Longhorn Assn and the Mountains and Plains Texas Longhorn Assn. The show was held at the NWSS facility in the Denver Stock Yards where thousands of cattle have gone nose to nose the previous few days. Shadow Jubilee was judged by Lizz Huntzberry of Smithburg, MD. Lizz is an ITLA approved judge and also a judge training instructor. Her text book style judging was a special touch of professionalism for the NWSS. Her careful detail in presentation of reasons was appreciated by all. It was obvious she personally was fond of the breed being a very successful competitor with Texas Longhorns for many years. Shadow Jubilee was exhibited by Rocky Mountain Longhorns, owner Tom Matott of

Shadow Jubilee waits her turn to compete at the 109th National Western Stock Show. Photo by Gary Lake. Castle Rock, CO. Matott explained, "She is nearing 15 years old, but we wanted people to see her in a judged competition. She is special and the crowd was excited to see her briskly strut around the show arena." Shadow Jubilee was bred and raised by Dickinson Cattle Co of Barnesville, Ohio. She was sold to James Steffler, Lapeer, MI, and then to Matott. During her career she has never been defeated in horn measuring contests, was voted "Ultimate Cow" at the TLMA Expo, has produced 8 clones, 9 natural calves and 11 embryo calves with 7 more soon to come. Starlight died at age 21.5 years of age, on December 11th, 2014. She was the first cow to reach 70” and 80” tip-to-tip and won every horn contest she ever entered, except once with Feisty Fannie. She was the first Longhorn cow to be cloned. Starlight had more offspring through her sons, Country Star – owned by Ty Wehring and Don L. King at one time – who was a “show” type bull, Awesome Viagra, Starliner and Rock Star, than any other cow. She appeared on the cover of the Texas Longhorn Trails more than any other Longhorn cow, and before and later on the Journal. She appeared in the Wall Street Journal, LA Times, New York Times and Texas Coop Power, among others. She did a lot to add value to Longhorn cattle. She was a wonderful Longhorn.
