EDITOR’S NOTES HOW MANY HATS? The majority of Longhorn breeders are accustomed to putting on many different hats. Parent, business owner, employee, property owner, livestock manager, bookkeeper, marketer and ranch hand are just a few you may be carrying simultaneously. It can be overwhelming to say the least. In this world where everyone is trying to get more done with less people or expense, we have all been stretched a bit thin. Trails Magazine has let a bit slip lately, including hitting our deadlines. We are taking steps to get back on track, the largest of these being to no longer create catalogs for events other than our association sales. With all the spring and fall sales trying to get catalogs out in an overlapping timeframe, our staff of two, myself and Trace, simply cannot get a catalog out in a timely manner and produce an issue of Trails at the same time. If you already have a catalog booked with us for 2020 we will still take care of the production for you, Trails simply will not bid on creating outside catalogs going forward. We will still allow catalogs to ride with the magazine if they so choose and we can even help arrange printing for those projects. We will still offer design and marketing solutions for our members! We will gladly help you with your marketing goals both in Trails Magazine and via e-blasts or TLBAA website and social media products. Event signage and banners will still be produced, and smaller marketing pieces such as brochures can be worked into our schedule as well. Sometimes you have to take off a hat to effectively operate in your other roles, and the Trails staff wants to be able to work on the content and design of Trails Magazine further, increase our social media presence and finally launch the new website. These are the things that will improve the effectiveness of our association and help us draw more attention to your marketing efforts via association options. Take a look at your own hats. Should you delegate a few of those? Take a closer look. Sometimes what seems like a vital hat would actually be more effectively worn by someone else and in the long run you can be more productive without it. When it comes to paying others to do a task you’re carrying, weigh the cost of your time and the benefit of you putting more effort into fewer things. Your Trails editor is scrutinizing hats right now. Looking at ways to get assistance with some additional tasks, project management solutions to keep better workflow and coming soon - fresh policies regarding material deadlines and better dissemination of information to our members. I think everyone will benefit from the adjustments. Thanks for your patience during the craziness of the past couple of months. Blessings,

Myra Basham

Association News

Chairman’s Message Longhorn Family, Longhorn Weekend is over and in the books. The weekend was a total success with the exception of a small turnout for the meetings, mainly because of the Covid-19 keeping members at home. This year, the TLBAA had the first run of what won’t be the last – a Zoom webinar meeting format. The Affiliate President’s meeting and the Board of Director’s meeting were Zoom meetings where the members of those groups could talk and see each other. We also had the Board present, in person and in the Zoom meeting the same way. Moving on up in the 21st century, I guess. The Eddie Wood Cowtown Classic and the Coliseum Clash in Cowtown Show were a big success with a large turnout in both events. Hats off to all that attended and those that worked to make them great. The meetings began on Friday morning with the Affiliate Presidents Meeting at 9:00 followed by the Board of Directors Meeting at 11:00, The Board set the Directors for Division C, with two new directors, Mike Lucas and Justin Georges. I know that they will be a great asset to the board and the association. I want to thank the outgoing directors Jim Rombeck, Alex Dees, Chad Smith and Chris Herron for all their service and the great job they did on the board. Their input and work will be missed. We also placed the Executive Committee: Chairman Keith DuBose; Vice-Chairman Russell Fairchild; Secretary Stephen Head; Treasurer Mark Hubbell; and Parliamentarian David Wars. The “Year End Awards” and “Hall of Fame Award” were given out on Friday evening, January 15, 2021, starting with a Social followed by the awards presentation. This year’s winners were: Mel Raley Award- Wes and Suzanne Smith; Elmer Parker Award- Dora Thompson; Dave Evans Award- Ross and Curtis Ohlendorf; and the Jack Phillips Award- Donnie Taylor. The Foundation Hall of Fame Award went to L. V. Baker. All these were well deserved and congratulations to the winners. The Eddie Wood Cowtown Classic Sale, with auctioneer, Joel Lemley and Lemley Auction Services for a great job helping people swap stock. The sale had a $3,109.33 average and had the high selling female, consigned by the El Coyote Ranch sell for $50,000.00 and was purchased by Suzanne and Bill Torkildsen. The sale area was filled with new breeders getting their first cows and old breeders improving their programs. I want to thank our sale sponsor, Ann Gravett of G & G Longhorns, for her support. A fun time was had by all. The Coliseum Clash at Cowtown Show had a great turnout, lots of great animals and showmen. The World Show Committee, Pam Robinson, and more help and sponsors than I can even name, made the formula for this wonderful event. Special thanks and kudos to the unsung heroes, the TLBAA office staff. Having to deal with half an office staff, due to Covid, performing better than an office of 20, in my opinion, got the things all put together and presented. Myra, Theresa, Trace and Pam, I owe you big time. What a team we have. To my Longhorn Family, Thank You,

Keith Du Bose, Chairman of the Board Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America

Longhorn Weekend

2021 TEXAS LONGHORN WEEKEND:

1.

The Show And Sale, and Awards Go On 2.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way and 2021 started out with a perfect illustration of that familiar saying. The ongoing presence of the Covid-19 pandemic loomed large going into January and in uncertain times even the longrunning Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo decided to cancel for this year. Longhorn breeders are a resilient bunch and venues were secured to enable Longhorn Weekend to continue, with all the events - shows, sale, meetings, awards - proceeding as scheduled. While The TLBAA had to adjust, and faced the handicap of the office suffering with positive Covid-19 cases, the weekend turned out to be an overwhelming success. Technology stepped in to help business be conducted at the Affiliate Presidents Meeting, the Board meeting and the General Membership meeting. Board members were able to interact via a zoom meeting and actually be on screen and interacting with the meeting. Members could watch the livestream of the meetings as well. Attendance at the Friday meetings and the awards and Hall of Fame presentation was less than half the normal crowd. To all who attended, volunteered, consigned, bought cattle and sponsored - thank you for making it possible for the event to continue. For those who could not attend, we missed you and look forward to seeing you next year! To find out more about the events turn to the following pages: 6

When the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo made the decision to cancel this year’s event, TLBAA board member Russell Fairchild made some quick phone calls to put a hold on event space with the City of Fort Worth Will Rogers staff so the Eddie Wood Cowtown Class sale and the traditional Texas Longhorn show could continue its scheduled weekend. Eventually, all portions of the qualifying show were held in the historic coliseum and the Eddie Wood sale continued its place in the West Arena. The show was christened as the Coliseum Clash in Cowtown and the members showed their support and enthusiasm. Sponsorships stepped up in a big way with over $13,500 contributed to help the show succeed. The total entries were an impressive 670! The Coliseum Clash in Cowtown offered open haltered and nonhaltered, trophy steers, TLBT youth, and select miniature classes. The Eddie Wood sale continued with their morning start time on Saturday which forced the show to wait until mid-afternoon to begin. The open haltered classes started the event with judge Tim Stidham offering his expertise. The open non-haltered and trophy steer division went late into the evening with PJ Budler handling the class placings. Although it was a late evening on Saturday, everyone was ready to start again on Sunday morning. The day began with popular City of Fort Worth mayor Betsy Price delivering an uplifting message to the youth members before their show began. There were over 100 TLBT members that participated in the Coliseum Clash! Entries approached the 350 number with several miniature exhibition classes also offered for the youth.

6. 1. Rylie Yarbrough shows off JCG Sheila during the Youth Show with the help of Tanner Kennedy with the calf at side. 2. Brayen Juarez joins in a moment of prayer before the show starts. 3. Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price addresses the crowd before the Youth Show on Sunday. 6. Trophy steers are in the house!

“This was my fifth Texas Longhorn show. These breeders don’t put on little shows - ever. Amazing entries every time. Also, the quality of the cattle on the top end of every class is always stellar. The people are great, incredibly supportive and so hospitable.” - Judge: PJ Budler

2021 TLBAA SPECIAL AWARDS 2020 MEL RALEY RISING STAR AWARD

This special recognition is awarded to those who have been an active member of the TLBAA for less than five years and through involvement and sustained enthusiasm have made a positive impact on their peers and on the Longhorn breed.

WES & SUZANNE SMITH, SOUTHERN LONGHORNS We met Wes and Suzanne Smith in January 2019. Wes reached out to us about a cow he saw on our Facebook page. We learned that he and Suzanne were just starting out in the breed. I invited them to join us for Texas Longhorn Weekend in Fort Worth. Since that first meeting, Wes and Suzanne have built a sizable herd of registered Texas Longhorn cattle. They have established their brand, Southern Longhorns, and have become a leader in the sales and promotion of Registered Texas Longhorn Beef. They committed themselves to making Longhorns a full-time business and in 2 Wes & Suzanne Smith accept the 2020 Mel Raley Rising years they have attained that goal. Wes and Suzanne also support Star Award presented by Keith DuBose. their local community by sponsoring events to raise funds for cancer patients and have initiated a program to give youth an opportunity to learn about raising Longhorns primarily for beef production. These up and coming breeders will tell you they are learning new things each day but they are definitely seizing opportunities to network and learn all they can about the breed and to advance the benefits of Registered Texas Longhorn Beef.

2020 JACK PHILLIPS AWARD

This award honors individuals who have worked selflessly for the Longhorn and breeders alike, without recognition.

DONNIE TAYLOR 4T LONGHORNS

The reason this individual is being nominated is because of his undying dedication to our industry. Many people associated with Longhorn cattle have seen Donnie and his wife, Marilyn at countless shows, sales and other events promoting and supporting the Longhorn cattle industry. He is a Lifetime member of both the TLBAA and the Ark-La-Tex Texas Longhorn Breeders, giving of his time and energy to help these associations thrive. Donnie previously served as a Director of the TLBAA, representing Region 7. Both Donnie and MariDonnie & Marilyn Taylor accept the 2020 Jack Phillips Award lyn are currently serving on the Ark-La-Tex Board, as well as presented by Keith DuBose. serving as Co-Show Chairs. Behind every good man is a good woman. As a team, they have for years been an integral part of this association’s success. Donnie has been instrumental in the success and fun surrounding our shows, wanting those who attend to enjoy and remember their time spent with us. This is evident with the many hugs he receives at the beginning of our events. He was key in starting the Boppa Calf Donation program, benefiting the TLBT youth. This required giving of his time locating quality animals for this youth program. He has for years served this affiliate, without seeking recognition. That’s why he is being nominated for the Jack Phillips Award.

2020 DAVE EVANS BREEDER OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award is given to individuals who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of Texas Longhorn cattle through their breeding program.

ROSS & CURTIS OHLENDORF ROCKING O LONGHORNS I would like to nominate Ross & Curtis Ohlendorf as breeder of the year. It does not take much time visiting with Ross or his father Curtis, to realize what a huge impact they have on the Longhorn breed. The Rocking O herd is a fine example of breeding with a purpose. In addition to retaining a huge herd of cattle, Ross sells great numbers of cattle to people in all aspects of the breed whether show ring, horn or breeding stock. The ranch is consistent in its sales and promotion of the breed. Also to be noted is their support and participation in numerous Longhorn sales events. Ross and his family are easy to visit with, which lends a favorable shine on the Longhorn industry as a whole. Ross & Curtis Ohlendorf with Rocking O Longhorns seem to be strong ambassadors of the breed through and through.

2020 ELMER PARKER LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The Elmer Parker Lifetime Award honors those members, who have been dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Longhorn breed, qualities that Parker was known for.

DORA THOMPSON SAND HILLS RANCH

Dora Thompson has been a longtime breeder of quality Texas Longhorn cattle. Anyone who has had the privilege of visiting her ranch in Mansfield, Louisiana can attest to that. Along with a quality breeding program, she is a gracious host. She welcomes anyone to come out, look at her herd and talk cattle. She can spend hours telling her guest about each animal explaining their qualities. She takes time to explain her program, as well as explaining what has and hasn’t worked. Her love for Longhorns is contagious. By the time you saddle up and leave, you are convinced. Few people leave without taking one home. She serves as a mentor and encourager for new and seasoned breeders alike, promoting the cattle, the TLBAA and its affiliates. She is curDora Thompson receives the Elmer Parker Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Keith DuBose. rently serving on the TLBAA Board of Directors, representing Region 6 as well as serving as a Director for the Ark-La-Tex Texas Longhorn Breeders Association. Longhorn Weekend

2021 TLBAF HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE

Dr. L. V. Baker, Jr., Safari B Ranch I am honored to nominate posthumously Dr. L. V. Baker for the Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame. L. V.’s contributions to the TLBAA, its members, and the Texas Longhorn breed span several decades and are demonstrated in many forms. Highlights include: • TLBAA President • TLBA Foundation Steering Committee • Breeder of the Year • Breeder, purchaser, and seller of numerous champion cattle • Highly sought-after show judge • Mentor to numerous youth and adults He, and his wife Pat, began this journey in 1971 with the purchase of five head from the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, acquired their ranch in 1972, established the Safari B brand of Texas Longhorn cattle, and over the course of now five decades have raised over 3800 head. His energy and commitment to the breed took two equally important forms: • Buying, raising, and offering for sale, the very best cattle possible through careful genetic blending focused on the complete, correct package of horn, color, and conformation. • Sharing what he learned with other breeders and youth participants. This included a substantial commitment to growing and strengthening breed association member services and regional affiliates, including judging countless shows. For over 20 years, he and Pat travelled extensively to sales and shows all across the country in support of other breeders. Documentation of his impact fills numerous pages throughout the Trails, the Scene, and the Journal. For many years, virtually every issue carried one or more references to L. V.’s work on behalf of the industry or the achievements of Safari B bred cattle. Due to the sheer volume available, just a few examples are included in this nomination packet. The Safari B has truly been the “Herd of Champions” based on its years on the sale and show circuit. Beautiful color, correct confirmation, and long horns were his objective, while at the same time ensuring preservation of the natural traits of hardiness, disease-resistance, and self sufficiency; calving, milking and mothering; and gentleness. He was committed not to pursue any single one of these critical physical or innate characteristics at the expense of another and focused (top) L..V. with members of the Safari B herd. (boton purity of the breed in future generations. tom) Auctioneer Col. Eddie Wood, past TLBAA Special highlights during his presidency included formation of the TLBT President Charles Schreiner, III, Joyce Wood and and the National Youth Show; an increase in the number of affiliates from 5 to past TLBAA President L.V. Baker, Jr. 18 and initiation of the affiliate presidents organization; completion of computerization of all TLBAA registration and other records; establishment of the Breeder of the Year recognition; and, on behalf of the Foundation, acquisition of the T.D. Kelsey bronze statue known as “Texas Gold” and the site in Ft. Worth’s Cowtown where it now resides. Leadership? Championship competition cattle? Significant industry accomplishments? Breeder education? National importance? Enduring contributions? His impact and influence on the breed check all the boxes. Not a sale or show goes by without the “Safari” name represented in the cattle. Brett Baker, Jeannine & Rand Baker, Pat Baker, Karen (Baker) & Bruce Renfro

Longhorn Weekend

2020 Rodger Damrow Colorful Calf Contest

RUNNER-UP: Al-Cowpone Guy & Vicki Packer

RUNNER UP: Standin’ Tuff Samuel & Heather Bray

RUNNER-UP: Unamed Calf Mark Scott

32 | March 2021

Respectfully titled after longtime Nebraska Texas Longhorn Association President, Rodger Damrow, who was very fond of colorful calves, this year’s contest drew 36 entries. Bonnie Damrow was honored to judge the entries and her pick for overall winner can be seen on this month’s cover. In the Texas Longhorn industry there are events that look at two out of three aspects of the breed, conformation and horn, but never has there been an event that features the uniqueness of colors so evident in the breed. This is a competition where everyone wins and it is affordable for all. Every entry is guaranteed publication in Trails with the owners name and ranch noted and, where else can you get a chance to be on the Trails cover for $20? Keep those cameras ready and start taking photos of your 2021 colorful calves to enter this year. The top three finalists are showcased first, followed by all the competitors (alpha by owner) for this title celebrating the distinctly colorful Texas Longhorn. Any Texas Longhorn calf born to two registered Texas Longhorns was eligible (some were too young to be branded and registered in time for the contest) and each entry cost $20. A great way to show off your colorful offspring and have a chance to make the cover of Trails Magazine. We appreciate everyone who took the time to participate and hope everyone will enjoy the festive displays of color on the following pages.

Calf Immunity: Importance of Colostrum Illness occurs when the body is overwhelmed by infection. A healthy animal with strong immunity is less likely to become sick. Immunity refers to the body’s ability to fight off bacteria or viruses, and this ability is developed in a complex process in which the body creates specific weapons for fighting specific invaders.

ANTIBODIES When viruses or bacteria enter the body, they start invading tissues and causing damage by multiplying and creating toxic products. This damage stimulates the body to create an antibody (a serum protein called an immunoglogulin) to react with the invading agent and neutralize it. Antibodies are carried through the body in blood and lymph systems. The main role of one type of lymphocyte (white blood cell) is to produce antibodies--the proteins that can neutralize certain infectious agents. If an animal already has antibodies against a specific disease organism, then whenever that particular organism invades the body again, an army of white blood cells (with their antibodies) converge on the site to kill the invader. Vaccination can stimulate production of antibodies, since the vaccine serves as the antigen (like an invading pathogen). The body builds protective antibodies to fight the invader. Then when the animal comes into contact later with the infectious agent, the antibody is present in the bloodstream to inactivate the pathogen. If enough antibodies are present to inactivate all the pathogens that invade the body, the animal will not get sick, and the invasion stimulates rapid production of more antibodies for future protection. A cow in a natural environment may not be exposed to very many disease-causing organisms, but today most cattle are confined during some parts of the year (in corrals, small pens or pastures that have been contaminated by heavy cattle use) and come in close contact with other cattle--with more chance of disease spread. But with vaccination and natural exposure to various pathogens, the cow develops many antibodies and strong immunity. During the last part of pregnancy she puts these antibodies into the colostrum she produces, so her calf can have instant immunity after his first nursing. The antibodies in colostrum are very important to the newborn calf because he has very little disease resistance of his own.

PASSIVE IMMUNITY Young calves are vulnerable to diseases such as scours and pneumonia but Mother Nature has this loophole covered. To help protect calves during this precarious period, the necessary antibodies are provided in the cow’s colostrum, to give the calf a temporary (passive) immunity against the challenges he will soon face.

Photo courtesy of Mary Kay M Clark

Antibodies in a cow’s bloodstream are unable to cross the placental barrier because these molecules are too large. A calf can receive the antibodies from his dam only from drinking her colostrum. During the last 3 weeks of pregnancy she accumulates antibodies from her bloodstream into her mammary glands; a well-fed, healthy cow produces an abundant amount of colostrum and a large volume of antibodies. You can maximize those antibodies by making sure she is not too thin (undernourished cows produce less total colostrum), and that her vaccinations are up to date so she will produce a high level of antibodies against those specific diseases. At the time she gives birth, the concentration of antibodies in her milk reaches its highest peak, then drops rapidly. It is important that the calf nurse as soon as possible after birth, to get full benefit from her antibodies.

ABSORBING ANTIBODIES There are several types of antibodies present in the cow’s colostrum. Their absorption rate and role in disease prevention varies depending on the class of an-

Health tibody (IgG, IgM, IgA). Some are designed to be absorbed immediately and directly through the calf’s intestinal wall, where they enter his lymph system and bloodstream to be ready to fight disease organisms, while others stay in the gut and attack any pathogens found there. The newborn calf must nurse quickly (to absorb the immunoglobulins that go through the intestinal wall before it thickens) and continue to obtain colostrum during his next several nursings to keep the other antibodies in his gut to protect against scours bacteria he may ingest from dirty teats or a dirty environment. The remaining antibodies in his mother’s Photo courtesy of Chrisann Merriman dwindling supply of colostrum (as it becomes diluted with regular milk) continue to benefit him even though he can no longer absorb any through the gut lining. The crucial antibodies he needs in his bloodstream are absorbed by a process called pinocytosis, which involves creation of a fluid pocket that aids in movement of antibodies through the wall of the intestine and into the lymph system. This works best when the calf is first born and his gut lining is thinnest, making it easier for big molecules to slip through. The lining begins to thicken after birth. He gets maximum antibody absorp-

tion if he nurses within the first 15 to 30 minutes after birth. By the time a calf is 4 hours old he has lost 75% of his ability to absorb antibodies, and absorption rate decreases rapidly after that. Any calf that has not been able to nurse in the first hour or 2 should be assisted, or given colostrum by bottle, stomach tube or esophageal feeder. A calf needs to have about 5% of his body weight soon after birth (1.5 quarts for a 60-pound calf, 2 quarts for an 80-pound calf, 2.5 quarts for a 100-pound calf), and the same amount again about 6 hours later. Once he starts to nurse, gut closure is hastened. This is probably nature’s way to insure that nothing else slips through the intestinal lining (such as bacteria or viruses) after he starts sampling his new world. Thus it is important that he have a full feeding of colostrum soon after birth. If a calf is cold and weak and only able to nurse a little, or if you feed him a small amount rather than a full feeding, this will speed up closure of his gut lining and he may not be able to absorb any more antibodies by his next nursing. After his gut closes he will only get the benefit of antibodies that fight pathogens in the gut itself.

TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS

By Heather Smith Thomas Antibodies in the calf’s bloodstream obtained via colostrum can help him resist blood-borne infections caused by bacteria such as salmonella, pasteurella, streptococcus, but cannot directly prevent gut infections such as those caused by E. coli. But high levels of certain antibodies in the blood can help reduce severity of scours, and the antibodies that stay in the gut after the intestinal wall closes (colostrum ingested in subsequent nursings) can attack any scours-causing pathogens found there. The number of colostrum antibodies that fight scours organisms such as E. coli can be increased by vaccinating the cow ahead of calving, making sure the vaccine is given far enough ahead (at least 2 weeks) that she can develop the antibodies, and not so far ahead (no more than 50 days) that her immunity level is dropping. Some types of scours can be prevented by giving the calf a commercially prepared concentrated antibody source or oral vaccine soon after birth.

HEIFERS’ CALVES Heifers’ calves are at greater risk of disease than calves from older cows, since heifer colostrum does not contain as many antibodies and has less variety of antibodies because young cows have been exposed to fewer infectious organisms in their short lives. Heifers may also have less volume of colostrum. A heifer’s calf may not absorb as many antibodies as he should if he

is slow to nurse, if the birth was difficult. The stress of a hard birth can also make him less able to absorb antibodies efficiently; stress may affect absorption even if you make sure he gets plenty of colostrum.

ACTIVE IMMUNITY Calves lose their temporary immunity (protection gained from antibodies via colostrum) by 7 or 8 weeks of age, or earlier. At that time their own immune system must take over. The time it takes for a calf’s immune system to gear up to ward off invaders will vary, depending partly on how strong his passive immunity was. If he had a high level of antibodies from colostrum, which effectively neutralized any invading organisms, his own defenses are not stimulated to develop--until that protection begins to wear off. The antibodies gained through colostrum can also interfere with effectiveness of vaccinations. If a calf is vaccinated young, while he still has high levels of maternal antibodies in his blood, his own immune system won’t bother to respond to the antigens in the vaccine because they are being neutralized by the maternal antibodies. Many types of vaccination given to a calf when he is only 2 or 3 weeks old won’t give protection, since it will not stimulate immunity. Most vaccines should be given at 8 weeks of age or older, and repeated with a booster shot 2 to 6 weeks later–to make sure the calf’s immune system will be able to respond.

Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow

Presidents

Message

Most kids choose a hero they want to be like or a profession they want when they grow up. I’ve heard my little brother say he wants to be a “destruction worker”, a fireman and a paleontologist…. He’s 7 and I’m sure his career goals will change at least a few more times as he grows. When I was Mason’s age, my dream was to become an architect. I’ve always loved details, lines, plans that can be followed without question. Blueprints fascinated me for many reasons. The answers were all right there in the plans, nothing left to interpret. Just like building a simple lego kit, you follow the steps one after another and the end result is a magnificent building. I’ve read books by architects, studied buildings, explored historic walls and toured homes built to test the span of time. I definitely will be pursuing engineering when I attend college, so I guess you could say I’m pursuing my childhood dreams. I love having a plan! I also had a hero that I looked up to at a young age, my Papa. Papa was not an engineer and not even a cowboy, although I sure thought he was. He may have had a plan, but he was often sidetracked by random sights. I walked beside him, trying hard to match his big strides with each click of our boots. I was 7 when I began to try to walk in his boots. Literally. He passed away when I was 7 and I inherited some of his boots. I put them on and tried to walk just like my hero, my Papa. Something about this past week, with all of Texas being snowed in and iced over, made me realize that I’m finally able to walk in Papa’s boots and match his stride. My Papa wasn’t a real “cowboy”, he lived in the city. But he was a true cowboy at heart. He took care of his family, his neighbors and community. He fixed what needed fixing, fed what needed fed, grieved, celebrated and always wore a smile. During the record breaking cold week, I witnessed so many of my friends and family doing the same thing. We fed what needed to be fed, we fixed what broke, we lost feeling in our toes and hands but never stopped until the ice was broken in every water trough. We grieved with each other at the loss and celebrated each time another calf was snuggled in front of the fire in the house. And we smiled. Through it all, I saw smiles and people celebrating the small victories each day. Ranching is the furthest thing from Engineering that I can possibly imagine. With ranching, there could be plans, but they’ll be altered at least 25 times. Blueprints, rigid lines, black and white instructions, perfect steps to take to achieve completion are all laughable when it comes to ranching. Being a cowboy means being flexible, fluid, prepared with multiple plans, perseverance, tough skin and a soft heart. I am so proud to be part of this community and I know that my cowboy hero is smiling with me.

The 2nd week of February 2021 found the majority of the USA in the coldest winter storm in recorded history. While many in the northern states were relatively prepared for the snow and ice, many people in the southern states were caught completely off guard. So many ranchers stepped up and battled the cold to protect their livestock first, their houses second. Here’s a tribute to all the cowboy and cowgirl heroes that put their heart and muscle into each day.

ASK THE

VET

WITH JULIE PACK, DVM

Doc, my bull likes to dig holes with his horns and now he’s got a giant crack in one. What can I do?

Raising cattle would be a lot easier if it weren’t for bulls. For a multitude of reasons! But they do like to dig, flip and otherwise terrorize rocks, water troughs, feeders and other ranch infrastructure. Occasionally one will tip a horn or just crack it and make a mess out of it. Horns are made up of an inner core of bone covered by a keratin (think fingernails or hooves) sheath. If the break or split is far enough out there will be no bleeding because the bone is not involved. If the animal has splintered the horn they will often look like a broken fiberglass pole with lots of little fingers. The unfortunate thing about a tipped horn is that the keratin is dead and will not “heal” back together, so there is no good way to save the tip. Some people sill use epoxy products to try and save these tips, but this is not recommended if the break involves the bone as it can trap bacteria in the horn. If the break is farther down and involves the bone there will be

some bleeding. If they have truly broken their horn (close to the base) that is a completely different story, and we can save that for another day. Most of the time the best thing to do is just leave the broken tip alone and let nature take it’s course. Eventually the animal will complete the break and the tip will fall off. If the break is a little further down the tip and the horn is bleeding you can cut the tip off just behind the break (close to the head) with a wire saw (OB wire, piano wire etc) to help with cautery. Spray the newly cut surface with a commercial bandage product, like an aluminum bandage spray, to help keep the area clean. Be aware that if an animal has tipped a horn from “playing” with objects in their pasture they are likely to end up with a matched set of tipped horns one day! Until next time, may your pastures be green and your calves be healthy!
