EDITOR’S NOTES COMMUNITY NEWS

This issue is as much about the people raising Longhorns as it is about the animals themselves. Texas Longhorn Weekend brings people from all over to participate in Association business, peer voted awards, peer nominated Hall of Fame induction, Longhorn shows and so much more.

Turning through the pages you find that this is much like a family scrapbook, with members honoring each other with kind words, showing photos of youth as they exhibit the cattle they love, and even showing off photos of the 2023 calves and 2020 females that exhibit the positive traits loved so much by the owners of these special cattle.

We even celebrate Motherhood, with the Dams of Merit program making three new additions. If you are unfamiliar with this program, turn to page 34 and learn more. These special females are also posted on the new tlbaa.org website as well.

If you haven’t visited our website lately, please go take a look! So far we’ve had positive feedback on the much easier to navigate site and the more modern look. Check back often as we continue to work on new material and resources to educate the public about this great breed and make it easier for members to access information and fill out the forms they need.

Trails also literally offers a spot for community news via “News on the Trail”. This is a place for members to share news about their ranch, animals or events they’ve participated in, especially when they are promoting the Longhorn breed. It can be anything from a photo with a caption to a small article with several photos. Kids give a speech or demo at school about raising Texas Longhorns? Did a group come visit your farm or ranch to learn about Longhorns? Were you in a parade riding your steer? It all counts as “News on the Trail”. Simply email the information and photo(s) to myra@tlbaa.org for consideration.

As we move forward into 2024, attend some events, talk to fellow breeders, see some great cattle. No one person has all the answers and the more you talk to others sharing this journey within the Texas Longhorn industry you’ll be surprised what you may learn from another person’s experiences, even if you’ve been raising these cattle for years. I’ve been within the design and publishing industry for most of my life and I still learn new things constantly. The cattle industry is no different.

Be sure to watch E-Trails and future copies of Trails for lots of opportunities to be a part of this vibrant community, whether in person, in print or online. There is no excuse in today’s connected world to not be a part of the fun!

Longhorn Weekend

2024 TEXAS LONGHORN WEEKEND

The Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America presence was expanded at this year’s Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo with ALL portions of Longhorn Weekend taking place at the historic Will Rogers Memorial complex. The Texas Longhorns have always been proud to be part of opening weekend and the exposure this opportunity presents. This year, all meetings and the awards reception were also held on site. This enabled most members the chance to attend parts of the weekend that were difficult in the past. The extra chilly weather added to the appreciation of having all events in the same area.

Friday had show and sale animals moving into the barns as meetings began in their new location near the Round Up Inn. The morning kicked off with an Affiliate Meeting led by Deb Lesyk. It was followed by the TLBAA Board meeting which included the seating of newly elected and re-elected seats in Division C, as well as election of Executive Committee members.

The TLBAA General Membership meeting followed and lots of topics were touched on, from a member proposal to limit Board terms to the desire to get a CEO back in place, members had the opportunity to interact with the Board and have their voices heard.

Following the membership meeting there was a chance to gather with old friends and new ones at the TLBAA Special Awards Presentation. Everyone had an opportunity to enjoy hors d’oeuvres while visiting with fellow breeders. As the awards began, the crowd cheered on the recipients of the Rodger Damrow Colorful Calf and 2020 Female Longhorn Photography contests. Then came the member nominated and voted on TLBAA Special Awards followed by the TLBAA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. It was a special time and if you missed it, please be sure to join us next year! You can find all the winners starting on pg.14.

Saturday brought the Eddie Wood Cowtown Classic Sale with 70 head hearing the pound of the gavel and changing ownership. With many still trying to recover from a year of drought and suffering from high costs of feed, the 2024 sale saw numbers down from the previous year. The high seller was $9,500 and the overall average of $1,653. For full sale results see pg. 30.

Following the sale, the TLBT and World Show Committee meetings were held near the Watt Arena with some exciting changes coming for this year’s World Show. You can find more World Show updates in this issue. Everyone then had time for a nice dinner and to rest up before the showing started. On Sunday, the TLBT Youth Show was held in the Watt Arena in front of a packed house with over 220 entries. You can see the results on pg. 20-22.

layer of shavings to help keep everyone safe in their walk over, a full day of Open Show animals in the historic Will Roger’s Coliseum began. Between the Open Haltered Show, the Non-Haltered Show and Trophy Steers, over 165 animals walked through the show ring. As Monday was a holiday, the show drew curious spectators as well as those family members and friends that came to cheer on their favorites.

Many more of the cold and bundled curious walked through the barn area of the Will Rogers Complex wanting a chance to see the Longhorns up close. It is an awesome opportunity for breeders to interact with the public and educate them about the Longhorn, potentially sparking an interest in the breed by new people.

If you have not ever experienced Texas Longhorn Weekend, it is a great opportunity to meet with fellow breeders, participate in Association business, and see some great Longhorns show, and maybe even take home a new herd member! This annual event always kicks off the opening weekend of the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. We hope to see you there in 2025!

TLBAA Special Awards & Hall of Fame Reception

This year the awards reception moved to the Will Rogers Memorial Complex allowing more opportunity for those participating in the Longhorn Shows to join in. While it is an honor to win a TLBAA Special Award, it is also a special recognition to be nominated by your fellow TLBAA members. Join us in congratulating this year’s winners!

Mel Raley Rising Star Award

This special recognition is awarded to those who have been an active member of the TLBAA for less than five years and through involvement and sustained enthusiasm have made a positive impact on their peers and on the Longhorn breed.

Wayne & Joanna Manning

I would like to present Wayne and Joanna Manning, M7 Longhorns, for the Mel Raley Rising Star Award. I met them in 2021 when they came to my ranch to search for their first longhorns. Their enthusiasm to buy and clearly invest themselves into becoming serious breeders was amazingly apparent from the start. It was obvious me they weren’t going to start off walking, they were going to be in a dead sprint. I watched Wayne spend countless hours, for weeks on end, studying successful programs and what genetics work with what animals. He came up with his own new ideas as to who would do well being bred together, to forge his own mark on the industry and build his own brand. Those efforts have seriously paid off with his animals being the total package of confirmation, color, disposition, and horn. In a very short period of time,

Wayne has become someone I consider as knowledgeable as anyone in the industry when it comes to genetics. Wayne and Joanna have also been very active on every level of the industry. They participate in futurities and attend almost every event put on by the TLBAA. You will find them supporting other breeders by attending sales all over the country. They step up and donate to the many causes the industry asks for help with. Their animals are the complete package and so are they. I can’t think of anyone that fits the criteria, or is more deserving, of the Mel Raley Rising Star Award any better than Wayne and Joanna. H

Jack Phillips Award

This award honors individuals who have worked selflessly for the Longhorn breed and breeders alike, without recognition.

Scot and Jodie O’Bryan

In the last few years that I have been involved in the Texas Longhorn breed and the Great Plains Texas Longhorn Association I have not seen anyone work harder to promote the breed and/or other people in the breed than Scot and Jodie O’Bryan. They have been and still are the driving force behind the two world qualifying shows held in Rapid City, South Dakota. Scot and Jodie were and still are an integral part of putting together a market for Texas Longhorn cattle here in the north central part of the United States. They make sure if a kid wants to show a Texas Longhorn, there is a Texas longhorn to show. They are firm believers in getting younger people involved with the breed. “Without getting younger people involved, you won’t have a breed, you won’t have an association, period!” as Scot would say. Scot will load up his pickup and haul kids to the Denver Stock Show. Jodie works her tail off to make sure the two world qualifying shows go off without a hitch, and the Top Hand Sale runs as smooth as possible. They have great all around cattle, period. They can compete in the show ring, sale ring, bull market, meat market and rodeo arena. Promoting the breed any which way they can. That’s what it all boils down to, promoting the breed, and people involved with the breed any way possible. This is just a short number of reasons of why I am nominating Scot and Jodie O’Bryan for the Jack Phillips Award H

Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award

The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award is given to individuals who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of Texas Longhorn cattle through their breeding program.

Dale Metz

My wife and I first met Mr. Metz at the 2020 Legacy Sale. At the time the ink was still wet on our application to the TLBAA and we were completely bewildered on how we were to begin our journey in the longhorn industry. Had it not been for the advice Dale provided at such a pivotal time in formation of our brand, I can honestly say we wouldn’t be where we are regarding our fervor to participate as stewards of the longhorn breed. What I admire most about the way Dale conducts himself as an ambassador of the TLBAA has to do mostly with the way he has constructed his herd. Rather than simply purchasing $100,000 brood cows, Dale has done the research, studied the pedigrees, and has educated himself on how to produce superior animals from less than superior genetics. By doing this, he has proven that anyone with the desire to become a serious breeder can have success regardless of their budget. More than that, he participates as an exhibitor, sponsors sales and futurities in and out of his home state, and is often seen purchasing donation heifers during large auctions. Similarly, Dale has taken his personal time (often at his own expense) to mentor and educate those, like us, who are new in the industry on how to avoid common costly mistakes that could eventually lead to dissatisfaction of the breeding process as a whole. In these actions, Dale is doing his part to solidify the success of longhorn cattle for future generations. I cannot think of a better example on how new breeders should conduct themselves for both, their heightened enjoyment of the breeding process, but more importantly for the continued success of the longhorn breed than the example Mr. Metz has sets by his everyday actions. When I think of what boxes must be ticked in order to qualify for the Dave Evans award, I firmly believe Mr. Metz is a perfect candidate for this level of recognition. H

Elmer Parker Lifetime Achievement Award

The Elmer Parker Lifetime Award honors those members, who have been dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Longhorn breed, qualities that Parker was known for.

Jimmy Jones

Jimmy Jones, Horseshoe J Longhorns, has been actively engaged in the longhorn industry since the 1980’s. He is a genetic genius as he has devoted his life to studying and applying longhorn genetic strategies in order to better the entire breed. He has created numerous outstanding longhorns, both bulls and cows, including buy not limited to, Concealed Weapon, Horseshoe J Example (100” Tip to Tip), Horseshoe J Important and the widely known triple twist orseshoe J Journey. His animals have won countless awards over the years in both the Horn Show Case and Futurity Events. His genius for breeding outstanding longhorns is superseded only by his humility, honesty and willingness to help other breeders succeed, while seeking no recognition for himself. He has assisted many new breeders by sharing knowledge and time. He has nominated others for awards when he was equally deserving as those he nominated. Jimmy is highly respected in the longhorn industry as a mentor and as a successful breeder. He has participated in numerous bull partnerships with other breeders in order to continue to preserve, improve and promote the breed; much like Elmer Parker, after whom this Lifetime Achievement Award is named. Jimmy’s passion for longhorns has been a commitment of hard work, “on a shoestring budget” (his words), constant study and research of pedigrees for the betterment of the entire industry. But first and foremost he has lived a life of service to others without seeking anything in return. His selflessness likely began as a young United States Marine who began serving his country in Vietnam and has continued without ceasing.

Jimmy Jones and the Horseshoe J brand is iconic in the longhorn world. There is no one more deserving, more dedicated and more passionate about the preservation of the Texas Longhorn breed. If you don’t believe it, just have a conversation with him and let me know at the end of that two or three hour event! You will have a renewed faith in humanity.H

TLBAA Hall of Fame Inductee

Jimmy Jones

- Decorated Vietnam war veteran, Rodeo Cowboy and Tire Salesman are all titles applicable to our Hall of Fame Inductee Jimmy Jones, but the title he was honored for this night was that of Texas Longhorn Breeder.

Ben Stone introduced Jimmy to the room summed it up nicely, “While most of us in this room recognize the unequivocal influence Jimmy has had on the longhorn breed, what, in my opinion qualifies him for the Longhorn Hall of Fame is the way he has bent and shaped this breed with the currents of honesty, humility, and an unselfish willingness to serve present and future generations of breeders - most times at the expense of his own time and at the cost of his own money. With that, Jimmy has accomplished something to which many of us in this room can only aspire… that when you see a Horseshoe J brand imprinted on an animal, you automatically know whatever is underneath it, has value.

“To me, the induction of anyone into a Hall of Fame signifies an outward acknowledgment of one individual’s accomplishments in building a team, a business, or an organization. Jimmy Jones helped build an entire community.

“Tonight we honor the achievements of someone who has spent a great deal of their life breeding animals in search of their version of perfection. But, based on the smiles on the faces of everyone here tonight, and the legacy you’ve built along the way… Jimmy, I think you’ve found it.”

Jimmy’s wife sherry spoke of Jimmy’s lifetime of accomplishments, both outside of the Longhorn industry and within.

“In 1966, Jimmy joined the Marines right out of high school and  was sent to Vietnam. He was a radio operator and received medals for: Purple Heart, National

Defense Service, Vietnamese Service, Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnamese Campaign, Good Conduct, and a Combat Action Ribbon. Jimmy started rodeoing in 1974. He rode bareback horses, bulls, and steer wrestled.  He was the All Around Champion in the Alabama Cowboy Association in 1977.   I met Jimmy in 1976 and we were married in 1978. I might also add that there were several interesting ambulance rides during the next few years.  He was inducted into the Professional Cowboy Association Hall of Fame in 2002.

“When Jimmy  got to the point he felt like his body hadn’t recovered enough from the previous weekend rodeos to be ready to ride the next week he turned to team roping. That’s when the Longhorns entered the picture. Originally he planned on buying some longhorn heifers just to raise roping steers. He fell in love with them. They would eat anything.  He decided he would branch out to the registered cows. He was looking at ads in the longhorn magazine and decided to call about some cows.

“Not sure if it was just a mistake or a little Devine intervention, but he dialed the number from the ad below the one he meant to call. When he asked for the man he was calling the lady said he must have a wrong number. He apologized and said he was trying to reach a man about Longhorns and the lady said well they had Longhorns and she would have her husband call him when he came in. Needless to say Mr. J B Hunn called Jimmy back and they had a good conversation about cows. The next day an overnighted package arrived with information about the cows Mr. Hunn had for sale.

“Jimmy scraped up $3750 and planned to make a trip to Texas. Jimmy’s dad, Mr. Leo, asked if he could tag along so off the went. Jimmy picked out his 3 cows and Mr. Leo asked what other cows would he get if he had $10,000 more dollars. Jimmy said it didn’t matter because he didn’t have $10,000.  Mr. Leo said “well, I’d like to help you if you will let me.”  Jimmy was a little hesitant because he and Mr. Leo already worked together at the tire store and didn’t always see eye to eye on things.  The desire for the cows won over.  Jimmy picked out 5 more cows and Horseshoe J Longhorns was founded.”

Two of his closest friends, Terry King and Nancy Dunn also spoke in honor of their humble friend. Story after story has been told of his generosity in helping others get started, and the time he has spent sharing his hard earned knowledge with both new and established breeders. His Horseshoe J can be found in many great pedigrees as well as in the names of animals that are in demand both private treaty and at auction. His story is a true tale of investment in the cattle, in the industry and in his fellow man.

The awards reception wrapped up with the acknowledgement of a long-time contributor to the legacy of the Texas Longhorn breed by welcoming them into the TLBAA Hall of Fame.

This one-time only contest hosted by the A liate Relations Committee, focused on females born in 2020. Why these three-year-olds? They were born during a time of pandemic, a year that changed the world.

The contest was open to TLBAA registered females owned by current TLBAA members who also belong to an active TLBAA A liate. The photo submitted had to

include a 2023 calf at side by a registered Texas Longhorn sire.

There were 15 entries submitted by 10 di erent breeders and the judging was tough on the committee, resulting in a 4-way tie for the runners-up. Winners received cash prizes and certificates. We thank everyone who chose to participate!

2023 Rodger Damrow Colorful Calf Contest

Respectfully titled after longtime Nebraska Texas Longhorn Association President, Rodger Damrow, who was very fond of colorful calves, this year’s contest drew 45 entries. Deb Lesyk was honored to judge the entries and her pick for overall winner can be seen on this month’s cover.

In the Texas Longhorn industry there are events that look at two out of three aspects of the breed, conformation and horn, but never has there been an event that features the uniqueness of colors so evident in the breed.

The top four finalists are showcased first, followed by all the competitors (alpha by owner) for this title celebrating the distinctly colorful Texas Longhorn.

Any Texas Longhorn calf born to two TLBAA registered Texas Longhorns was eligible (some were too young to be branded and registered in time for the contest) and each entry cost $20. A great way to show off your colorful offspring.

We appreciate everyone who took the time to participate and hope everyone will enjoy the festive displays of color on the following pages.

Cattlemen’s Congress Continues To Be A Great Opportunity

The Texas Longhorns were well represented for their third year at Cattlemen’s Congress held at the end of 2023 in Oklahoma City. Over 220 entries competed in qualifying classes for the TLBT Youth, Open Haltered, Non-Haltered, Miniature Haltered and Trophy Steers. Judges Chad Breeding and MacKenzie Collopy handled the open class duties while exhibitor favorite Ryan Rash evaluated the youth entries. The TLBAA was well represented in the event’s Supreme Drive with the Grand Champion TLBT Female (LR Ripping CP owned by Locke & Payne Partnership); Grand Champion Open Female (Discovery GG CP owned by Walker Hance); and Grand Champion Open Bull (WIC Next Big Deal, owed by Randy & Catherine Morris).

We’re excited to welcome 3S Touchdown Tari, owned by Mike Davis of Lucky Mountain Ranch, Dallas, TX, as a new member of the Dams of Excellence.

The Dam of Merit Program has been available for TLBAA members for many years as a tool to recognize those Texas Longhorn females that stand out in the area of production among Texas Longhorn breeders. Often overlooked as an effective marketing tool, this list is an official record of the positive reproductive record of Longhorn females.

How can it benefit in your program? First, among fellow breeders, it shows your dedication to building a herd on a foundation of solid, reproducible genetics. No one can afford females that do not produce offspring regularly and this record shows off those dependable genetics in your herd.

Second, among other cattle breeders, it promotes the cost effectiveness of the Texas Longhorn breed. Dependably producing a calf every year is a trait every breed hopes for in a female. Such evidence of productivity can sway other cattle owners to consider bringing Longhorns into a crossbred program or starting a secondary herd of Longhorns. You may even turn them into 100% Longhorn owners!

Third, among those who have never owned livestock

or own other types of livestock, the thought of generating a little regular income from that beautiful, unique piece of history is always a plus. If you’re a hobbyist or simply an animal lover, you still want to know that when you’re ready to see calves on the ground, it will be high odds that the process will go smoothly.

What’s the cost to you to get your female on the list? Only $25 plus a little time investment. You will need to make sure that as your females calve, you have updated their progeny records in H.O.R.N.S.

If you have a female that qualifies, simply call the TLBAA office and speak to registrar Rick Fritsche, or drop him an email at rick@tlbaa.org and he will provide you with the necessary form to fill out to submit your dam for verification. Rick will also help with any questions you may have about “calf at side” information in H.O.R.N.S.

Once the progeny have been verified, your dam will be added to the list which appears in Trails Magazine, posts under “Awards” on www.tlbaa.org, and you will receive a Dam of Merit certificate for your records.

This is an affordable and easy benefit for members to promote a very important positive trait of Texas Longhorns that make owning them that much more satisfying.

The New, The Notable & The Need to Know!

will be held June 13 – 15 in Belton, Texas, at the newly renamed Cadence Bank Center (formally Belton Expo Center). This will be the 37th year of this great event that honors our show yearend winners. This year’s theme is Fiesta!

After surveying the TLBT membership at the of last year, the youth were in favor of changing the name to Texas Longhorn Junior Nationals for that portion of the event. This will now have the Texas Longhorns aligned with what other breeds call their annual end of season youth shows. Being able to use the more universal “Junior Nationals” on their college applications, scholarships and internship applications will hopefully put our seniors on the same playing field as other agriculture youth that are applying. There is also the expectation for this name change to yield more sponsorship opportunities with the more familiar terminology in seeking financial support for our event.

Whatever you call it, the TLBAA World Expo will continue to showcase the future of our breed with the Junior Nationals youth show for our TLBT members. The youth members will present their females, bulls and steers in their respective classes for both standards and miniature Texas Longhorns. This year we welcome Ryan Rathmann as our youth judge. The Junior Nationals will once again be a Beyond the Ring sanctioned show.

Additional youth activities will include Livestock

Judging; whereby exhibitors will have the chance to compete by judging heifer, bull, steer and cow-calf classes. Gold Merit is a two-part event where exhibitors are requested to keep a record book for the year and give a speech in front of judges. Quiz Bowl tests exhibitor’s knowledge, from agriculture, current news, and health topics – be sure and review the Trails magazines since last year’s World Show! The TLBT General Membership Meeting is the perfect time for youth to get involved as well as the election of new officers.

The Premier Exhibitor Award continues for the sixth year at this year’s event. The competition has proven to be popular with participation from all four youth divisions. TLBT members earn points by competing in livestock classes, showmanship, livestock judging, quiz bowl, photography and Gold Merit. To be eligible, a youth must compete in ALL events. The high point youth will win a gorgeous show box sponsored by Culpepper Ag Services, Rafter P Longhorns, Sharer Longhorns and Haywire Cattle Company. Don’t miss this great opportunity!

Our World Show will feature divisions including Haltered, Non-Haltered, Trophy Steer and Miniature. This year’s judges are: Open Haltered – Parker Henley and Non-Haltered – Brayden Hawkins. One thing gone from this year’s World Expo will be the Texas Gold Futurity. If you have attended any of the most recent World Expos, you know the time crunch the three days of the event has posed for exhibitors, attendees and organizers. It was

felt the best way to ensure the event continues to be produced in the best possible manner was to look at ways to shorten the days when possible and support the main activities. It is hoped the Texas Gold Futurity will be picked up by one of the TLBAA’s affiliates in the future.

Additionally, the Breeder Memorial has moved to the Texas Longhorn Weekend in January as part of the awards reception. This event draws a diverse audience from all aspects of the industry and allows a larger audience of peers to share of moment of remembrance.

Be sure and participate in the TLBAA Photography Contest – open to all members! This year’s theme is “Show Me Your Colors!” and your interpretation.

Speaking of sponsorships, there is something for everyone to help support the show. One of the innovative ways to help yourself and the show, is for members to recruit $200 sponsors in their local area (not intended for TLBAA breeders to use in place of regular sponsorship packages), such as feed stores, livestock equipment, etc. This allows for one free World Expo entry for each $200 Member Recruitment sponsorship.

Howdy! The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo is in the books and spring shows are quickly approaching! If you were able to attend the TLBT General Meeting at the FWSSR, thank you for your participation in choosing the prizes you want to see at the end of the year TLBT World Show. We raised $1100 at the Eddie Woods Sale by auctioning off two donated items - those funds were added to the TLBT General Funds. $340 was donated to our service project and I spoke to several people about longhorns and the TLBT.

As the 2023-2024 show season comes to a close, now is the time to start thinking about nominations for some special TLBT awards (nomination forms will be in the World Show Packets being mailed out). TLBT annual elections will be held at the World Show also and that is the perfect time to step up and fill an Officer or Director position with the TLBT! Any one of the current TLBT Officers and Directors would gladly speak to you about what the position requires and how you can join us in “Building a better tomorrow”.

What have you learned from showing Longhorns?

- I have learned many lessons within my time of the Texas Longhorn breed. I have learned maturity to responsibility to hard work. However, there is one lesson that I will truly cherish. That is how important family is. I started my Texas Longhorn show career because of my family, and this upcoming June, I will close out my show career with my family right beside me. They have stuck it out for me and I will always value how they have supported me and how much love we have for each other.

What/Who has been your biggest influence while showing Texas Longhorn Cattle?

- My biggest influences in the Texas Longhorn world is my sisters. My older sister, Hailey, has helped me become the showman and herdsman I am today. She pushes me to be the best that I am and I wouldn’t be where I am in my show career without her. My younger sister, Harlee, is also one of my biggest influences while in the Texas Longhorn Breed. While she may be 7 years younger than me, she has taught me a lot more than most people. She is a constant reminder that I have someone looking up to me and that I need to be a good role model. But, she also is there for me when I can’t be my best and lifts me up. This is why my sisters are my biggest influence.

What is the most fulfilling thing about showing longhorns?

- It is a lot of fun showing off my hard work with my calves to the judges- especially in showmanship. I really love how I get to be with my family and friends at the shows too.

What is something unique about you?

- My dad is learning to fly Blackhawk helicopters in the Army so we are living on a military base in Alabama. We drive 9 hours to get to Nana and Papa’s where my cows are. I have stayed with them in Louisiana since the end of November (9 weeks) so I can work with my cows and show in our parish 4-H. Being homesick for my family was hard but I made it.

What are your plans for the future?

- I want to stay on our family farm raising longhorns and be a nurse like my mom.

What would you like to accomplish/pursue in your future endeavors? (For example, after high school or college) - What I would like to accomplish after high school is to complete my Bachelor’s at Texas Tech University in Agribusiness and Criminology. Then get my Master’s in Political Science. I then will attend Law School to get my JD to become a practicing attorney. One day I hope to open a law firm and work on Criminal Defence. However, I think my main objective that I want to purse while in and after college is to make sure that I am doing whatever I can to help others. That is why I have chosen my career path, and I know that I can accomplish this goal.

CALF IMMUNITIES-The Importance of Colostrum

Illness occurs when the body is overwhelmed by infection. A healthy animal with strong immunity is less likely to become sick. Immunity refers to the body’s ability to fight off pathogens, and this ability is developed in a complex process in which the body creates specific weapons for fighting specific invaders.

One method involves production of antibodies. When pathogens like viruses or bacteria enters the body, they start invading tissues and causing damage by multiplying and creating toxic products. This damage stimulates the body to create an antibody (a serum protein called an immunoglobulin) to react with the invading agent and neutralize it. Antibodies are carried throughout the body in the bloodstream. The main role of one type of white blood cell is to produce antibodies--the proteins that can neutralize certain infectious agents.

If an animal already has antibodies against a specific disease organism, then whenever that particular organism invades the body again an army of white blood cells (as well as antibodies) converge to kill the invader. Antibody immunity depends on the level of exposure, stresses on the animal, general nutrition status and current health. A severe outbreak of disease in a herd may eventually break down a healthy animal’s immunity, and will overwhelm a severely stressed animal’s defenses even sooner.

Vaccination can stimulate production of antibodies, since vaccine serves as the antigen (like an invading pathogen). The body builds protective antibodies to fight the perceived invader. Then when the animal comes into contact later with the actual infectious agent, antibodies present in the bloodstream and can inactivate the pathogen. If enough antibodies are present to inactivate the agents that invade the body, the animal will not get sick, and the invasion stimulates rapid production of more antibodies for future protection.

in that colostrum—from their mother. These are not present in a colostrum replacer you’d buy,” he says.

Calves get more actual protection from the dam’s colostrum than a commercial product. “Some of the immune modulators that are not actual antibodies are also important to the calf,” Acton says.

Newborns have a limited window of time to absorb antibodies from their mother’s colostrum. “Optimal time is the first 6 hours of life, but may be less in certain conditions –perhaps just the first 2 hours in cold weather. Some factors shorten this window, and some things lengthen it,” says Acton.

As soon as the calf suckles, the “open gut” starts to close, to prevent absorption of pathogens. Suckling stimulates the gut to close up, because it’s always a race between the antibodies from colostrum and the pathogens the calf might f he manages to suck a little bit, or if you feed him a little, the gut closes up quicker than if he had nothing. “The time window for the gut to absorb something in this situation is a ot longer than if the calf gets a small amount of colostrum,” he explains.

“I have 40 cows myself, and once had a situation where an old cow made up her bag just before she calved. When I went into the barn after she calved, it looked like the calf had sucked one quarter. I thought he was off to a good start. Later I looked at that pair again and the other 3 quarters were still full. I put that cow in the chute to check, and the quarter I thought he’d sucked was blind. The calf might have been sucking on it, but there was no milk,” says Acton. By then, the calf was 14 hours old, and had never had anything to eat.

A cow in a clean environment may not become exposed to very many disease-causing organisms, but cattle are often confined in corrals, small pens or pastures that have been contaminated by heavy cattle use, and come in contact with other cattle--with more chance of disease spread. But with vaccination and natural exposure to various pathogens, the cow develops many antibodies and strong immunity. During the last part of pregnancy she puts these antibodies into the colostrum she produces, so her calf can have instant immunity right after he suckles.

Passive Immunity From Colostrum

Dr. Andy Acton, (Deep South Animal Clinic at Ogema, Saskatchewan) reminds people that baby calves have to absorb antibodies from their mother’s colostrum because they don’t get any from her via the bloodstream while in the uterus. This passive immunity from colostrum is important.

“There is more to it than the temporary immunity. There are other factors gained from colostrum than just the antibodies absorbed when calves suckle the first time. There is also some absorption of white blood cells of different kinds

Even in a well-managed herd there may be some calves that don’t get as much colostrum as they should. In some situations the calf is unable to get any colostrum at all. Sometimes a heifer won’t let her calf get to the udder. In other situations the calf may be at the udder and you hear smacking noises, but he’s just sucking the side of the teat and doesn’t really have it in his mouth.

In cold weather a cow’s teats may get frostbitten before she calves, and there may be a little scab at the end of the teat and the calf can’t get the teat started. He may suck, but gets nothing—unless you restrain the cow and get those scabs off.

“With my calf that was 14 hours old before it got anything to eat, I checked his blood levels and he had no antibodies, so I fed him 2 liters of colostrum, waited 2 hours and gave him 2 more liters, waited another 2 hours and gave him another 2 liters, and got his blood levels up to normal in terms of total protein measurement. Even though he was older, we made up for the lack of percentage absorption with extra volume,” says Acton.

“Sometimes you can make up for being a little delayed, by giving the calf a little more. You have to be careful doing that, however. You don’t want to overfeed a weak calf that might regurgitate,” he says.

“If colostrum intake is managed (making sure each calf gets enough colostrum, soon enough), the health and per-

formance of that calf will be far better. Some years ago we tested a group of about 1000 calves from several different farms. We blood tested the calves to measure antibody level, as one of the measures of whether they nursed or not. The bottom one-fifth probably didn’t get much colostrum. Later, those calves weighed 30 to 40 pounds less at weaning than the other calves. This lower weight was not due to sickness; they just didn’t do as well,” says Acton.

Calves get off to a better start if they have adequate colostrum soon after birth. “If cattle are calving in large areas, on their own, it’s difficult to monitor. You want really good calf vigor—calves that can get right up and suckle quickly.”

You wouldn’t want to be calving in severely cold weather. Also, the cows need adequate nutrition to have a strong, healthy calf. “Calf vigor at birth is the key to success. It requires good nutrition with cows in good shape, and all the vitamins/minerals needed, in a good supplementation program. Then the calf has a good chance to be vigorous at birth,” he says.

Calving in warmer weather is an advantage because the calf doesn’t get chilled and has a longer time to try to suckle before he gets too cold and gives up. There are advantages to calving later, with cows in big pastures unassisted, but if something goes wrong you are not there to intervene and correct a problem. Mother Nature is impartial and doesn’t care if some of those newborns don’t make it.

“There is definite benefit to making sure every calf suckled an adequate amount of colostrum, soon enough, but this requires more labor. The rancher has to weigh these alternatives,” says Acton.

“There are some things that can be done when you know they didn’t suckle soon enough. You can try plasma transfusions or blood transfusions – especially if it’s a valuable calf – to get up to a normal level.” It’s much simpler, however, to try to work within that window of time after birth and make sure the calf suckles enough colostrum.

Vaccinations To Boost Immunity

Some people vaccinate calves at birth, or vaccinate at branding time. “When calves are very young, antibodies received from colostrum will interfere with producing antibodies. Earlier thinking was that vaccinating a very young calf didn’t do any good because of the maternal antibodies, but more recently we’ve found out that early vaccination does produce a cell-mediated immunity and also a memory. Then when you re-vaccinate that calf later, the second vaccination acts as a booster,” says Acton.

“The calf won’t get as much antibody production when vaccinated young— after he’s had colostrum—but he will get some cell-mediated response. We can vaccinate young calves earlier than we thought we could. We like to see all calves get a blackleg vaccine (generally in a 7 or 8-way vaccine that also protects

against C. perfringins and other clostridial diseases) by about 2 months of age,” he says.

“At about the same time we are also using respiratory vaccines on calves, such as modified live viral vaccines (IBRBVD-PI3) in combination with bacterial pneumonia vaccine (pasteurella, hystophilus). This provides some protection against summer pneumonia, and gives an excellent base for fall boosters at weaning time. Then when we give vaccines at or before weaning, the immune response is much higher and much better and more protective.” This pays off in less sickness at weaning time, especially if the calves are weaned with minimal stress.

“There are a couple of intranasal respiratory vaccines that can be used, depending on the individual operation. For herds that are winter calving, or purebred herds with highvalue calves, or a commercial herd with a history of baby calf pneumonia (getting sick at about 6 weeks of age), intranasal vaccines have been very helpful. They are easy on the calf, and because they are given intranasally they produce an IgA response right where it is needed—locally, in the respiratory tract. We are using those in some winter-calving herds that are more confined and show a history of risk for early respiratory disease in young calves. We give these intranasal vaccines when the calves are a day or two old,” he explains.

Well here we are into our 2nd month of the year already! Our big event so far was the National Western Stock Show at the end of January. As usual it was a ton of fun! We had exhibitors from 6 states, 101 cattle entered and 22 youth showing cattle. We had exhibitors that have been coming to the Stock Show for many years and we also had a few 1st time exhibitors this year.

Our weather was reasonably cooperative for January in Colorado and we didn’t have to fight too much ice and snow which is always a huge plus. This was our second year in the new arena and it was again great. But several of the old timers commented on how they “kind of missed” the old cold, drafty, dirty metal building that we showed in for years with the porta potties at the back. Some talked about the old army tent that we used to have food and fellowship in the old yards. History is hard to let go of for sure, but the new building is beautiful, warm, clean, with lots of inside plumbing and even a bar!

Every year we strive to increase our numbers and continue to get the word out about how great Longhorn cattle are. One of MY favorite things about the show is talking to spectators around the pens and telling them everything they will stand still to listen to about Longhorn cattle. I love to educate people about our agricultural lifestyle and specifically about our cattle.

There are some potential changes coming to our CO State Fair schedule, so keep watching the State Fair website for those changes as they get worked out.

We haven’t shared much information over the past few months. Our national show was a success in November, we presented the “Boots on the Ground” buckle to Leann Hildebrand, we dedicated our yearling heifer jackpot to the memory of four founding members by renaming it, the “CTLA Legends Jackpot” and we have welcomed some new members. We can’t say thank you often enough to our sponsors for their continued support of our shows and ongoing activities.

The Annual meeting is in planning right now as the Directors are considering a different location and working on some ideas to encourage members to attend. Discussions will include our 2024 shows, and our Legends Jackpot.  We are very open to any ideas to help us continue to move forward.

It’s been great to see some youth interest, the Hildebrand boys and their cousin helped so much at our national show and we have a new young lady, Bowie Robbins who is currently working on her heifers for the 2024 shows. A picture of Bowie starting her calf is included with this write up. Good work Bowie!!
