TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS
EDITOR’S NOTES HEY PRETTY MAMA There’s very few who could dispute that Texas Longhorn cows are among the prettiest mamas in the world. But their beauty is more than skin deep. They are marvels of the bovine world when it comes to fertility, longevity, calving ease and the ability to successfully raise a thriving calf. That does not mean, however, that as an owner you get to just throw her out and ignore her while she does her job. Today’s Longhorns are not free to roam hundreds of miles fending for themselves. We’ve fenced them in on increasingly smaller parcels of land and they have become dependent on their owner to be sure they get adequate nutrition from available food sources to continue to successfully give you a calf each year. This month we want to help you with maintenance of these special cows and look at how envirnomental factors we can help control affect fertility. While in a natural state they are very fertile producers. However, even well-meaning interference by man such as over feeding can lead to issues. Turn to pg. 29 to learn more. There’s nothing quite like the anticipation of a calf on the way. There are very visible signs when a cow moves closer to calving and if you’re not a seasoned veteran of calf-watch duty, then turn to pg. 18 to learn the signs to watch for as delivery day draws near. If you haven’t made that first purchse of a female to start your herd and you want to talk to existing breeders, there are plenty of shows, sale and events coming up to get out and see the cattle in person and talk to breeders. Just turn to page. 72 for our industry events calendar and find one near you. Are you a new member? If you’ve been a member three years or less and would like to introduce yourself to the industy, we offer a free new “Meet The Members” section where you can share a paragraph or two about why you chose to get into Longhorns, where your program is at the moment and where you hope to take it, as well as one photo of you of your choosing. All you have to do is email myra@tlbaa.org to submit it. Now that we’ve recognized the ladies, July is full of bull(s)! July will be our two-year A.I. Sire Reference edition which will feature all TLBAA A.I. sires along with a photo, two generation pedigree, registration number, A.I. number, and current owner’s name. This not only comes in handy as a sire selection tool, it is a great historical reference as well as a good way to look up bull information when filing out registration paperwork. Reserve your space today by e-mailing myra@tlbaa.org. You don’t have to have an A.I. Sire to benefit. This is an often referenced edition and a great way for your breeding program and cattle for sale to get in front of readers for two years. The next edition of the A.I. Sire Reference will not print until 2024. Until next month, Blessings,

Association News
Chairman’s Message Longhorn Family, I hope this letter finds y’all in good health. As you know, the show season is winding down for 2022 and I believe there is only one, maybe two shows being pulled off before World Show on June, 22-25, in Belton, Texas. It has been a busy year on the show circuit with lots of fine cattle being shown this season, it will be a great show this year and staff and World Show Committee are working on getting ready for the World Expo. The Horn Showcase, this year, will be in a new location and a new date in Wichita Falls, Texas, is coming up quickly on October 13-16, 2022, getting entry forms, consignment forms for the sales and advertisements out in hopes of making it the best one yet. These two are the largest events that the TLBAA puts on and your support is needed and will be greatly appreciated in making these happen. Sponsorship packages are available for both and you can contact Pam Robison at the office, or any of the committee members if you would chose to support them. The Trails has worked hard getting out the May issue. It is the much awaited Brood Cow edition with lots of information for you on your cows. There are several articles this month on breeding and how to keep those cows producing at their best. Also, there are a lot of great looking females in the ads this month with members showing off their cattle. Enjoy the reading this month. Also, in this issue you will find the results from several of the spring sales such as the Legacy Sale, the Bluegrass Sale and the Texoma Sale, and their corresponding futurities. You might say there was some excitement at these with lots of positive activity with the upturn in prices and lots of new names as buyers at these sales. We have also acquired the services from the National Center of Beef Excellence and Becky Miller to help us get caught up on the DNA services with Neogen. They were recommended by Neogen and came highly recommended. They also have been working with Digital Beef and can integrate the results into our Horns System. Here is a reminder for the Membership Renewals coming up with a deadline of June 30, 2022. The staff has sent out an E-Blast to also give members the option to call in or email a supplied form off the E-Blast to allow you to renew that way. And yes, the office will still print out and send you the forms as always, if you haven’t renewed by May 15, 2022. This is just another option and another convenience to better meet your needs, plus, it will save the association lots of money! Thank you for your continuing faith in the TLBAA. I believe we are headed for great things in this organization for our cattle, our members and our youth, our longhorn family. Stay healthy, stay safe and have faith.
Thank You,
Keith Du Bose, Chairman of the Board Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America

For those of you that do have computers and email capabilities you can order directly through Neogen and, if you haven’t already done so, set up an account with them. TLBAA Announces A New Staff Member You may have heard a new voice and name this month when you’ve called or emailed in to the TLBAA office. Please meet our newest associate Emma Moorman below, who will be filling the existing role of Graphic Designer. Please take a moment to read about her below and welcome her to our association staff.
GRAPHIC DESIGNER My name is Emma Moorman and I am very excited to be stepping into the role of Graphic Designer for the TLBAA. I graduated from Texas A&M University in May of 2021 and while I’m not sure I can support UT’s Bevo just yet I am having a blast learning all about the breed and history of Texas Longhorns. I’m a Fort Worth native and was working as a freelance designer until I found my place in the TLBAA Trails department. In addition to my work as a graphic artist I am also an avid sculptor. I spend my free time playing with my dog and creating sculptures any chance I get. Much of my work both digitally and sculpturally is based on stories and imagery found in Texas History. Having attended Gone to Texas camp as a kid and participated in FFA throughout high school, Texas and the animals that call it home are very near and dear to my heart. In college I earned a Bachelor of Science in Visualization which included studies in 3-D animation and graphic design plus as many welded sculpture classes as I could sneak in. I have thoroughly enjoyed helping create ads and content for the TLBAA thus far and can’t wait to see what else we create together.

Cows generally calve about 9 months and 7 days after conception. Average length of pregnancy is about 283 days, but this figure is just an average and very few cows calve exactly on their estimated “due date”. because some individuals become loose and floppy several weeks before calving. The pelvic ligaments also relax. If you look closely at the back end of the cow or heifer you’ll notice that the area between her tail head and the point of the buttock (pin bone) on each side of the tail is relaxed, appearing somewhat loose and sunken. Labor will usually begin about 12 hours after complete relaxation of those ligaments. If your cows are gentle enough to let you walk up and scratch them, you can feel the pelvic ligaments next to the tail head. This is one of the surest ways to predict calving. These ligaments are about an inch in diameter, connecting the pin bones to the spine. They attach to vertebrae just ahead of where the tail starts and are easily visible on most dairy cows and on thin beef cows. On a fleshy beef cow you can’t see them but you can feel them. The ligaments are normally very hard and tight, except for a few hours just before labor begins, and just after calving. They loosen up as part of the birth process that enables all parts of the birth canal to expand so the calf can come through.
The Tale of the Twist Bull or Heifer? — Editor’s Note
If you’ve been in Facebook groups or around Texas Longhorn breeders for long, then you’ve heard that you can tell the sex of a pending calf by looking at the switch of the cow in the middle of the third trimester. Now, I’m not here to prove or disprove, but merely to pass along the camp-fire wisdom that’s passed down through the years. According to several longtime breeders, a tightly twisted corkscrew tail switch means a bull calf is on the way. A straight or fluffy switch predicts heifer. Why not do a little research of your own and see how it works for you next calving season?
Several hours before you notice any signs of early labor, these ligaments start to relax and may become so soft you can hardly feel them. If they are soft and spongy, the cow is only a few hours away from calving. If your cows are in a calving area where you can walk through them, and are gentle enough, you can walk among them slowly and patiently while they are eating, and assess these ligaments. On a gentle cow that knows and trusts you, you can walk up behind her (be sure to let her know you are there, so as not to startle her) and rub the tail head. This is a way to check any cow you think might be close to calving, to see if she’ll calve within the next 12 hours. If you rub your hand alongside the tail head, most cows enjoy this, since you are scratching an area that’s hard for them to reach. This allows you to assess the tightness (firmness) or softness of the ligament. The cow has to be standing up for you to adequately feel the ligament. It won’t give you an adequate assessment if she’s just gotten up; it takes a few minutes of standing before the ligament assumes its normal tightness or looseness. If you can check a cow a couple times a day as you walk through the herd, you’ll know whether or not to worry about checking her more often. If the ligaments still feel tight at your evening check, you’ll know that she probably won’t calve that night. And if you detect that the ligaments are becoming loose, you’ll know you’d better watch her closely, even if you were not expecting her to calve so soon. If you have breeding dates on a cow (as when breeding by AI, or if you are closely observing the cows during their breeding season to know when they were bred by a bull), you have a good general idea when she will calve, and a projected “due date”. But sex of the calf, age of the cow, season of year (summer calves may come a few days earlier than winter calves), heritability of gestation length, nutrition of the dam, etc. can all be factors in whether calves come ahead of or after their projected due date. Weather also makes a difference. There is often a flurry of calving just before a storm. The calves that might have arrived over a several day period will all come at once. When the barometer is falling, you can expect a lot of calves. Many cows that are ready to calve will begin labor in a low pressure period rather than when the barometer is rising. It is very common to have an abnormally high number of cows calve just before the storm and then less calving activity in the herd for the next 48 hours.

BREEDING
By David Wars, TLBAA Region 7 Director
The Importance of Good Udder Structure I attend a lot of Longhorn events and serve as a judge at futurities and shows. That said I get to evaluate a lot of cattle and see area we as breeders need to work to improve in our cattle as a whole. One of the main and most important areas is udder quality and structure. Longhorn cows produce some of the richest milk in the world but they should have a good udder to dispense it with. In making my rounds I am seeing way to many cattle going through sales and shows with obvious udder problems... balloon teats, weak and blind quarters, badly balanced udders and even saw one not too long ago in a sale with blood dripping down her legs due to mastitis. She went to an unsuspecting buyer with a tiny new baby born at the sale by her side. Can you say “immediate problems for the new owners”? In another sale I watched a very large horned beautiful cow enter the ring with a potbellied, hairy little dog of a calf about 3 months old. There were comments through the crowd about how nice of a cow and how cute the calf was. This particular cow appeared to have one functioning quarter in her bag. She brought a fairly large price because of 80” horns but lacked the ability to raise a decent calf. As breeders we need to educate ourselves as to what to look for in a cows udder as next to her reproductive tract that is one of the most important areas of concern. If she can’t milk she can’t raise a calf, if her teats are ballooned she is going to have problems raising a calf and if she has udder structure problems she will pass it on to her daughter’s and her son’s will pass it on to his daughters.
Here’s an example of good teat size and placement. With a full bag of milk the calf would have no trouble here.
A cow’s udder should be well balanced with approximately 55% of the capacity in the back quarters and 45% in the front. She should have four evenly sized teats about the size of the average person’s index finger so new calves can easily nurse. The small teat size by allowing the calf to nurse also helps to prevent fever and inflammation in the udder and reduces the chance of infection. We can all save ourselves lots of headache by learning what to look for in our breeding cattle and when evaluating show and sale animals. I know this is COW 101 to many of us but for some reason this basic important concept is being overlooked regularly these days... something to think about!

TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS
Health
By Heather Smith Thomas
FACTORS that
affect
FERTILITY in cows Photo courtesy of John Clark
There are many factors that influence fertility. Whether a heifer will breed quickly (reaching puberty at a young age) or a cow breeds back quickly after calving depends on a combination of genetics, nutrition, general health, reproductive disease, etc. Any of these factors can affect the fertility of the individual animal, or the herd. GENETICS: HERITABILITY OF FERTILITY People who make a living from their cows know that fertility is the most important economic trait. Studies have shown that reproductive traits are twice as important as growth traits, which are more important than carcass traits, in beef cattle. Any desired trait (even horn length in Longhorns) is not as important as reproductive traits. Before you can sell a calf, or have that calf perform well in the feedlot, or produce a carcass that brings a premium at harvest, or grow to be a champion in the show ring or set records for any selected trait, a cow must first get pregnant to produce that calf. Yet fertility is usually not at the top of the list when producers are selecting replacement heifers. “Ironically, the beef industry has been selecting almost exclusively for growth and carcass traits, at the expense of reproduction,” says Kit Pharo, a seedstock breeder in Colorado. “For at least 50 years or more, academics have told us that heritability of fertility is very low–so low that we shouldn’t waste our time selecting for it. If you were able to isolate fertility from everything else, then that assumption might appear to be true. In the real world, however, nothing is isolated,” he says. Numerous traits are interrelated. “Fertility is more a function of fleshing ability than anything else, and fleshing ability is a function of low maintenance requirements. Reproduction cannot take place until maintenance requirements have been met and cows are storing energy reserves as fat,” says Pharo. A really thin cow won’t be very fertile. Since
fleshing ability and maintenance requirements are heritable, fertility is also very heritable. And some breeds and individuals (especially crossbreds) tend to be more fertile than others even if they have a lower body condition score. As the majority of beef producers selected for more growth and less back fat, however, they inadvertently selected for lower fertility. “They created hard-keeping, high-maintenance cows that struggle to reproduce under what was once considered normal ranch conditions. The academic solution to this problem was to reduce stocking rates and/or increase supplemental feeding. Instead of producing cows that fit their environment, they had to artificially change the environment to fit their cows,” said Pharo. The real solution is to change the focus of genetic selection—looking for more efficient, easy-fleshing cows rather than the high-producing cows that often need additional inputs (at more cost per cow) to breed on schedule. Any herd, in any breed, can be genetically improved with selective breeding, to be more feed-efficient, and as a result, more fertile.
TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS
NUTRITION AND FRAME SIZE Dr. Steve Hendrick, Coaldale Veterinary Clinic, Coaldale, Alberta says the heifers and cows that breed quickly and calve early in the breeding season have more chance to rebreed, and tend to stay in the herd longer, but they need adequate nutrition to do it. “Gestation is roughly 285 days and you only have 365 days in a year, so this only leaves about 80 May 2022 | 29

If cows today are much bigger,” Hendrick says. feeds are short on certain minerals then check the soils “This makes it hard to judge a heifer and determine whether she will mature to be 1300 pounds or 1500 pounds. When estimating whether a heifer is between 55 to 65% of her mature body weight at breeding time, you don’t really know. You could look at the dam and have an idea based on her size, but that’s only half the equation. We don’t always know what genes for size the heifer got from her sire,” he explains. Frame score charts can help you estimate mature frame size, if you know the Photo courtesy of Eitan Barhum age of the heifer and can get SELECT FOR FERTILITY her weight and hip height. “It’s important to put selection pressure on your replacement heifers with a short “These might help you guess breeding season--just one or two cycles,” says Hendrick. “The ones that don’t breed what her mature size and early are not as fertile.” It is easy to select for fertility by giving heifers a very short body weight might be—at time with a bull, keeping only the ones that get pregnant. A $20 entry fee made payable to the TLBAA is to be included with the photo. Members can enter more than one animal, but each entry must have a TLBAA registration number or, if too young to be branded, the TLBAA registration numbers of both sire and dam. Contest will be open until December 31st, 2022. Winners will be decided by an independent judge not involved in the contest. Winners will be announced during the Longhorn weekend in January. The winning entry will be featured on the front cover of TRAILS. (If possible, think vertical when snapping the photo) The additional finalists as well as all other entries will be featured elsewhere in the magazine.
Get involved, check your 2022 calves and pick your entries for this annual contest. For questions or concerns, email Tina DuBose (tinadubose10@gmail.com), Deb Lesyk (halters.buckets@yahoo.com), or Myra Basham (myra@tlbaa.org).
Let’s see if we can have entries from every state and country that has TLBAA members. Make it fun and encourage other members to send entries.

The Source Youth Showcase & The Source Syndicate Kick Off Show
On April 9 & 10 Fort Worth, TX was swarmed with many of the breed’s exemplary youth exhibitors for The Source’s Youth Showcase, and The Source Syndicate’s Kick Off Show. On Saturday, April 9, The Source hosted two brand new events that had not been seen in the Texas Longhorn breed: a 3-Ring Showmanship Competition and tournament-style Bracket Challenge. Both exciting events featured the three-judge panel of Jerry McPeak, Brian Rogers, and Shane Meier. It was long, fun day highlighting and rewarding the hard work and great cattle of the Texas Longhorn Youth, as well as giving away $18,000 in cash premiums on top of rosettes, banners, prizes, and awards – including each exhibitor receiving $100. We want to thank the following supporters that donated at the Hudson-Valentine Stockyards Sale & Texoma Spring Classic: Mike & Kalli Smith, Chris Clark, Dan & Gaylan Hendricks, Ursula Allen, Richard & Jeanne Filip, Craft Ranch, Bill & Suzanne Torkildsen, Stacy Schumacher, Ricky McCleod, and Chris Hesse.
