Dear TODA Members: As you know, the TODA scholarship fund has been named the Barbara Eads Memorial Scholarship Fund since Barbara’s passing in 2010. Many of our members donate every year to the Fund, enabling us to award critical scholarships to deserving high school seniors. Thank you! The question was raised recently about establishing additional scholarships in recognition of other notable members of our TODA family. This was an excellent question that needed to be addressed. As you know, TODA is a small organization, and, after much consideration, the TODA Board decided that our organization is not able to justify establishing additional scholarships. To recognize other individuals, however, the Board made the decision to rename the Fund the TODA Memorial Scholarship Fund, while retaining one Barbara Eads Scholarship each year (funds permitting) in recognition of Barbara’s legacy. Whether you donate on the website at www.todaweb.org, or by calling the TODA office at 512-474-2801, you now have the ability to specify your gift in honor of a particular person. Please consider donating to the Scholarship Fund every year when you renew membership! We need your help in ensuring a legacy of orchestra leaders! Donors will be recognized in the annual convention program.

W23: The Proper Way to Set Up a Bass Daxun Zhang, clinician Steven Ward, presider

While teaching, we often have to spend a lot of time on changing bass students’ incorrect playing habits. It becomes much more difficult to fix old habits especially when students are older. For students to achieve their musical goals sooner, it is crucial to have a proper set up at the very beginning when they need to build good habits. The goal after this lecture, is that music educators would have more perspectives and ideas on how to set up beginning level bass students.

Les Sellers, clinician Sandra Vandertulip, presider

A cheap, fast, and effective way to monitor individual tuning and record playing tests: With the combination of an ‘iRig’ and a ‘contact microphone’ students can send their individual sound signals to their smartphones. This opens up the possibilities of using tuner apps that will accurately pick up their sound without competing with ambient noise. It also allows students to record everyone’s playing tests simultaneously without wasting anyone’s time. You won’t have to lose rehearsal time hearing individual playing tests, you can do both! Different apps and rehearsal techniques that work well with this technology will be discussed.

8:00 am – 9:15 am Room 008

Appropriate for any age level, this approach provides engaging exercises and references designed to make counting second nature for all. Attendees are encouraged to bring their instruments for this hands on session.

2016 Procedure For Selecting Convention Music The TODA Board of Directors chooses the music to be read at the annual convention. These selections are chosen at the annual meeting of the Board in early June. The Board restricts its choices to music that has been published during the prior year with the exception of special categories such as UIL music. Selections are chosen from music that is sent to TODA from various music publishing companies. The appeal to the TODA membership of newly published music may vary from year to year according to what is received from publishers. Suggestions from the general membership for selections fitting the new music requirement are always welcome and greatly appreciated.

Terri Elizabeth Neubert of Wichita, Kansas, ended her vibrant life of 55 years on April 8, 2016 following a brief illness. Terri was a beloved violinist (Austin Symphony and Austin Opera Orchestras), celtic fiddler (Flaming Celts – family band), and a middle school orchestra director. Terri received a BA degree in music performance and business from Wichita State University. She entered the program focused on piano but was inspired to pursue the violin, becoming a professional violinist and playing with the Wichita Symphony. Intent on making the world a better place, Terri lived every moment of her short life to the fullest. Always smiling, she brightened everyone’s day with her joyful presence, and one of her greatest delights was helping young players. In addition to playing her violin (often accompanied by husband David on the guitar), Terri loved shopping, interior design, working in her garden, and cooking. Teri was Past President of the Texas Orchestra Directors Association (2001-02), and a member of the American String Teachers Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Music Educators National Conference and the American Federation of Musicians, Texas Music Adjudicators Association. Terri will be deeply missed by her devoted family, friends, many grateful students, and her large family of TODA orchestra directors.

David, Karen and Bruce Kinzer, my siblings, for putting up with my violin practice when I was little and didn’t play very well. All my love. (Look down on me, Bruce!) Paula Knight, my best friend and pianist, for all the music we have made together. Thank you for your long time support of the Past Presidents Reception. May the door never close between our offices. Kay Vanlandingham, my best friend and colleague for her open ear and sharp mind and always willing to listen to me.
