Let me extend a warm welcome to our 2015 Convention Attendees. This is our 54th Annual TODA Convention in beautiful downtown San Antonio! This year’s convention offers value to every orchestra teacher. We have six traditional reading sessions, including full orchestra, holiday and pops titles, and seven reading sessions featuring music from FJH Music conducted by Carrie Lane Gruselle, new titles on the PML and in David Becker’s conducting sessions. I promise you will find many new works to share with your students. Also, please check out the many different clinics to help you polish your teaching skills. Many are led by our talented TODA colleagues, but you will find other clinics led by musicians outside of the Texas classroom. Carrie Lane Gruselle offers several clinics, including one on engaging beginning strings students. David Becker will present multiple conducting workshops and clinics, and Kirt Mosier will present motivational techniques and secrets for all performance ensemble directors. We have planned many social events for you to enjoy each evening during convention. Be sure to come by the Menger Hotel Thursday evening for the Fiesta Welcome. This year, the annual BBQ will again be held at Historic Sunset Station on Saturday evening. I hope everyone will take the short walk to this beautiful venue and enjoy fellowship, refreshments and dancing. Don’t forget the Silent Auction! Bring your checkbook or credit card and consider a purchase to support the Barbara Eads Scholarship Fund. Thanks to your generosity last year, we were able to present scholarships to four outstanding students this year. This is a wonderful accomplishment, so let’s continue to grow this program. Lastly, do not miss the TCDA Sing-In. Let’s join with TCDA in singing Schubert’s Mass in G on Thursday evening. One of the reasons we are able to continue holding our convention is because of our vendors. Please visit them and thank them for their support! In addition to the many vendors who continue to support us, please seek out the new vendors as well. They want to meet you! Learn about all the wonderful products and resources available to you as an orchestra director. The schedule builds in several blocks of time without clinics or reading sessions, so get into the Exhibit Hall often. Don’t forget to drop your door prize coupons in the bins to be eligible for valuable door prizes. The most important thing we do during our convention is meet new friends. The reason orchestra education is strong in Texas is because of YOU. The collective wisdom, skills and passion of the TODA membership cannot be matched anywhere. If you are a new teacher or an experienced teacher with questions about how something could be better – ask a fellow member. Someone will know the answer. If you are an experienced teacher, seek out one of the many new members we have this year. Your mentorship of young teachers will ensure that Texas Orchestra programs continue to grow and remain the model of excellence in the nation. Have a great convention!

Texas Orchestra Director of the Year Deborah Kidwell Deborah Kidwell was exposed to music and art at a young age, and having a career doing something she loved allowed her to share her talent with others. Deborah completed BME and M.Ed degrees from the University of Houston. She began her career at Goose Creek ISD in Baytown and served public music education for 33 years, retiring in June 2007. During her tenure as an orchestra director and fine arts administrator, Deborah was regarded campus-wide as a cheerful servant to students and fellow teachers alike. She taught all levels of orchestra in Goose Creek CISD (19741982) and in Clear Creek ISD (19822000), capping her career as the Director of Visual and Performing Arts for Clear Creek ISD (2003-2007). After retirement, she worked at the Arts Alliance at Clear Lake, an arts non-profit, serving as their Director of Education. She was a cocreator of the McAdams Metronome, now in wide usage in many band and orchestra classrooms. In spite of being responsible for a program at Clear Creek ISD that included 160 teachers, Deborah made time to enjoy the hands-on aspect of the job and was known for her accessibility. During her career, she cultivated Award-Winning orchestras, while also wearing the hats of Fine Arts Department Head, Music Theory Teacher, Technology Teacher, and New Teacher Mentor, often all at the same time. Among her former students are educators, performers, doctors, pharmacists, ministers, composers, engineers, and businessmen who count themselves among those fortunate to have been in Mrs. Kidwell’s Orchestra Family. In 2006, Deborah was named Administrator of the Year by Houston Culture Shapers, an art program for high school students in Harris, Galveston and surrounding counties. The executive director of the Houston Culture Shapers said Deborah’s accomplishments stood out among all the nominees. Not only
did she improve Clear Creek ISD’s art program, Deborah was part of a committee that helped Houston Culture Shapers expand into the performing arts (prior to 2005, the area-wide program was only involved in visual arts). Deborah also made changes that strengthened the art program in the school district, expanding fine arts assessments for students at the secondary and fifth grade levels, and adding advanced placement music theory classes to the curriculum. In 2007, the Texas Art Education Association recognized Deborah with the Educator of the Year for Administration/Supervision Award. She presented at the CEDFA Summit 2008 for the Administration strand. In retirement, Deborah stays active in her profession, serving as a consultant for school orchestra program evaluations, working with TEKS-based curriculum writing, and consulting with construction of fine arts facilities. She has recently been back in the classroom, serving as a long-term sub for orchestra programs in Clear Creek and Pasadena ISD. She is an active church musician, playing violin and handbells, and she conducts an adult recorder consort and a handbell trio. Deborah serves on Executive Boards of the Bay Area Chorus, Bay Area Youth Symphony and the Clear Creek Association of Retired Teachers. Deborah is a past president of TODA, as is her husband, James Kidwell. She has two married stepchildren and one married daughter, and enjoys spoiling seven grandchildren, three who play stringed instruments. Winning awards was never at the top of Deborah’s list, though she admits it is nice to be recognized for her work. “I think art is extremely important because it gives students a chance to express themselves,” Deborah says, “and I believe art helps enhance learning in academic subjects.” We are honored to recognize Deborah Kidwell for her accomplishments with the 2015 Orchestra Director of the Year Award.

Barbara Eads Memorial Scholarship 2015 Recipients Katherine Dodgen Katherine Dodgen is a 2015 graduate of Klein Oak High School in Klein ISD. She is a cellist in the Panther Orchestra. Katherine’s love of music began the first day of her 5th grade strings class, and working with the older student volunteers gave her encouragement to continue her music. When Katherine entered intermediate school, she volunteered to help with 5th Grade Strings, a program that introduces students to the orchestra. Then, in her sophomore year, Katherine discovered the Texas Future Music Educators organization (TFME), and since that time, her dream was to be a music educator at the middle school or high school level. In 2012, as part of a project for the Girl Scout Gold Award, Katherine conceived the idea of providing beginner strings instruction for low-income students who could not afford music lessons. This evolved into a Super Strings Saturday Workshop that combined three of her passions: working with music, orchestra and children. The workshops were held at the Klein Intermediate School. As a result of the program, the school has had the highest retention rate – and the largest orchestra – in their history. Katherine has since expanded the program to include additional schools in the district. She is also president of the Klein Chapter of TFME. Cathy Fishburn, one of Katherine’s references, describes her as a “young person who is organized, dedicated, and on top of things,” and says that she is most proud of Katherine’s “giving spirit and leadership skills.” Katherine will continue her studies at either Sam Houston State University or at The University of Texas at Arlington.
Emily Monk Emily Monk is a 2015 graduate of Heritage High School in Frisco ISD. Emily plays the cello and considers music a “universal language.” She has wanted to become an orchestra director since “learning all the great things music can do for students.” She has participated in solo recitals, chamber ensembles, and full orchestras at school and within her community. One of her most influential experiences was the opportunity to perform in the All-State Symphony Orchestra at TMEA in 2014. Spending four days under the instruction of conductor Kevin Noe further honed her passion and love for music. Emily believes that exposing students to music is a crucial part of developing both mental strength and cultural awareness, and she hopes to reach out to the entire student body when she becomes an orchestra director. Emily would like to initiate a program to get as many students involved and interested in music as possible, not just those who are “dedicated musicians.” Emily looks forward to college to gain the tools and knowledge to accomplish her goals to become a music educator. She plans to attend Baylor University.
The TODA Scholarship is available each year to a deserving high school senior entering as a college freshman in the fall semester. Application deadline is May 1 each year.

Barbara Eads Memorial Scholarship 2015 Recipients Kayla Needham
Andrew Pina
Kayla Needham is a 2015 graduate of Berkner High School in Richardson ISD. Kayla grew up listening to her father teaching cello lessons, and was entranced by the low vibrations it emitted. In fifth grade she chose to play the violin. By junior high she found orchestra to be a “safe haven,” and cherishes those memories that the world of music gave her. In high school, at the UT Arlington Summer Strings Camp, Kayla was greatly influenced by conductor Royce Coatney, who told his students that, “teaching music and conducting is a calling, much as a preacher or a priest would have,” and she realized she could not see herself doing anything else. Kayla’s desires to teach music because she wants kids to have the same incredible experiences she has had, and she believes that music will give them a way to express themselves in a positive way. When Kayla took AP Music Theory in high school, she realized “the genius of these composers, and I finally understood the blueprints and structure of music. As a music teacher, I will be able to show the wonder of music to kids, and I plan to make music (and orchestra specifically) fun, cool, and anything but boring.” Kayla plans to attend The University of Texas at Arlington.
Andrew Pina is a 2015 graduate of Tom C. Clark High School in Northside ISD. His primary instrument is the viola. As a member of the Youth Orchestra of San Antonio, Andrew gained unique experiences locally and globally. He toured Great Britain in the summer 2012, performing in concert halls throughout England and Wales. He attended prestigious music festivals such as the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in Vermont and the Castleman Quartet Program in Colorado. Andrew had the opportunity to collaborate and receive instruction from top professors and performers, such as studying privately with Roger Myers, Professor of Viola at The University of Texas at Austin. He credits these experiences in gaining “new insights into music and life, and motivating me to develop my gift of music and to share it with others.” As the Student Director of his High School Orchestra, Andrew leads the orchestra in warm-up and fine-tuning exercises, and allows him to share his musical techniques to not only the viola section, but to the whole orchestra. The experience of working with large groups and delivering instructions to his peers is giving Andrew the necessary leadership skills required as an orchestra director. He hopes to “inspire the next generation with a zest in learning to create music at the highest level.” Andrew plans to continue his studies at Baylor University.
Barbara Eads Barbara Eads, former Pasadena ISD Director of Fine Arts and longtime music educator, passed away April 26, 2010. During her career Eads taught virtually every type of music imaginable, including Elementary music, Middle School band, choir and orchestra; High School band, choir, orchestra and drum corps; and at the University level, string methods, elementary music methods and theory. Her teaching also included high school English and college courses. Eads was the first woman elected president of the TMEA. She was also president of TODA and TMEC. A scholarship was named in her honor for her commitmet to music education. TODA awards high school senior(s) a scholarship of $1,500 for one year only. Recipient(s) must be entering as a full-time freshman (in the Fall following the summer the award is presented) into a Texas college or university taking a minimum of 12 hours and major in a music degree program leading to Texas teacher certification with music as the primary teaching field. More info and applications may be found online at www.todaweb.org. Donations to the Memorial Scholarship may be made online or sent to: Texas Orchestra Directors Association • 7900 Centre Park Drive, Suite A • Austin, TX 78754 Acknowledgments will be made to the donor, and annual donors are recognized in the convention program.

2015 Composition Contest Winner M. L. Daniels Nationally renowned composer Dr. M. L. Daniels received his bachelor’s degree from Abilene Christian University after serving three years in a U.S. Air Force Band. He completed his doctorate at The University of North Texas, where he studied composition with Samuel Adler. Daniels joined the music faculty at Abilene Christian University in 1959, after four years of teaching at the high school level. He remained at ACU for the next 34 years, assisting with the band for the first four years, directing the university orchestra for three years, and serving as music department chairman for 15 years (1964-79). While at ACU, Daniels taught music theory, orchestration, counterpoint, class brass, class strings, and composition. As a member of the ACU music faculty, he was presented with an Outstanding Teacher Award from the College of Liberal and Fine Arts. In 1982 Daniels received the prestigious Minnie Stevens Piper Award for outstanding teaching and scholarship in Texas universities. Daniels played trumpet for several seasons with the Abilene and San Angelo Symphony Orchestras. He retired from ACU in 1993, and moved to Austin, where he lived with his wife, Elaine for 21 years. In 2015 they moved to Sun City in Georgetown.
Currently, Daniels has 17 compositions on the Texas UIL Prescribed Music list. He has served as staff arranger for Warner Bros. Music and has been commissioned to write band sightreading music for the Texas UIL contests. He has over 100 published compositions including works for brass ensemble, solo wind instrument and piano, full orchestra, string orchestra, band, and string quartet. Though he has pieces published for a variety of ensembles, Daniels has been most interested in music for young orchestras, and his work in this field has brought him many awards. Daniels is a four-time winner of the National School Orchestra Association (NSOA) Composition Contest, and the winner of the 1999 TODA Composition Contest. In 2000, he won the Merle J. Isaac Composition Contest (sponsored by the ASTA and the NSOA) with a piece for string orchestra. In 2007, he received the TODA prize for a full orchestra composition. Daniels has directed all-region and all-city orchestras, and continues to compose and serve as a music festival adjudicator throughout Texas. For the last few years, Daniels has been the orchestra composer-in-residence for the Williamson County Symphony Orchestra. He continues to conduct his compositions at their concerts.

C.L. Gruselle, clinician Lamar Smith, presider Sponsored by The FJH Music Company Instruments courtesy of Antonio Strad Violin Beyond technique and beyond theory is the aesthetic moment—the responsive or “affective” moment when the student makes a connection to the music or the music-making experience. These moments can be anticipated and encouraged through careful lesson planning.
Ian Edlund, clinician Jason Thibodeaux, presider Besides a quality instrument, strings are most important for development of a fine sound. We’ll take a sideways look at strings for violin family instruments, answering questions you were too embarrassed to ask. Find out why your choice of strings can help guarantee student success or failure.

W5: Get HIPP In the Classroom: Historically Informed Performance Practice Made Easy Ryan Ross & Clint Capshaw, clinicians Clarence Frank, presider Period performance practice does not have to be the domain of wonks or require huge investment in gut strings, new bows, or end pin removal. In fact, you can easily apply historically informed principles on modern instruments both in your classroom and your performances, so that your students experience Baroque, Classical, and Romantic music in new, exciting ways that more closely mirror composers’ intentions. Ross and Capshaw will provide concrete examples and suggestions on ways to apply these principles that go well beyond the cliché “don’t vibrate” and “choke up on the bow hold.” These ideas will be equally applicable to your next grade 2 arrangement or unabridged masterwork.

Charles Hausmann, clinician Choral and orchestral conducting can be considered two different cultures within the same performing art. To communicate effectively in each, it is helpful, if not essential, to become fluent or at least conversant in the languages of both cultures, connecting with a vocabulary that is familiar and congruent in both word and gesture. Few sources address this issue, which Hausmann will refer to as “bilingual” conducting. Band Brilliance Publishing, company Michel Nadeau, presenter
David Becker, clinician Jan Garverick, presider Instruments courtesy of Williamson Music Company Participating directors are encouraged to bring their own copy of the Beethoven, Egmont Score!
W9: Non-String: Successful Transition from Band to Orchestra Directing Gene Williams, clinician Ed Chapman, presider Mr. Williams will present concepts, practices, and musical tools he has found to be helpful in his experience transitioning from the role of teaching band to the role of teaching string orchestra.

2015 Procedure For Selection of Convention Music The TODA Board of Directors chooses the music to be read at the annual Convention. These selections are chosen at the annual meeting of the Board in early June. The Board restricts its choices to music that has been published during the prior year with the exception of special categories such as UIL music. Selections are chosen from music that is sent to TODA from the various music publishing companies. The appeal to the TODA membership of newly published music may vary from year to year according to what is received from publishers. Suggestions from the general membership for selections which fit the new music requirement are always welcome and greatly appreciated.

NEW YamahaTimpani Design. Projection. Clarity. The next generation of Yamaha timpani features upgrades to the frame, bowl and wheel designs, and the tuning gauge. Yamaha completely redesigned the frame to enable maximum sustain from the suspended bowl and ensure a long, reliable life. Simultaneously, the design of the bowl was altered to improve consistency and generate a deep, rich tone. Beyond the sound, Yamaha created a new wheel design and improved pedal mechanics to allow vast position options and smooth, reliable pedal operation. In addition, the tuning gauge can now be moved to accommodate German and American setup options.

Music First-Practice, Assess and Teach
In Memoriam Carold H. Nunez of Denton, passed away June 7, 2015 in Corinth, Texas, at the age of 85. After serving in the U.S. Army, he married a young music teacher, Rebecca Breining, in 1956, and they had two children. Carold spent 29 years teaching music at public schools, inspiring children from as far south as Beaumont and north to Wichita Falls, before he finally settled in Denton. He served as orchestra director at Denton High School and coordinator of the string program for Denton ISD until he retired in 1985. Carold’s students won many awards for their dedication to the art of music and for their stellar performances. Over the years, Carold wrote and published several string orchestra compositions with Hal Leonard Music Publisher and Kjos Music Publishing Co. He also published a method book titled Uni-Tunes. Carold was a longtime member of TODA. During his career, he received many accolades, including the TODA Orchestra Director of the Year Award in 1989; Co-Winner of the 1999 TODA Composition Contest for a full orchestra composition entitled Tejas; and the Greater Denton Arts Council Community Arts Recognition Award, honoring those who have worked to promote the arts in Denton. Emma Frances Schultz, a music teacher for 52 years in the state of Texas, passed away March 22, 2015 in Dallas, Texas. Emma was a wonderful human being, wife, mother, and daughter. She influenced many students throughout her long career as a music educator and set the standard of excellence in high school orchestras. Emma loved opera, cooking, animals, reading, swimming, watching her soaps on TV, the Disney animated movie “Cinderella”, and boy, did she love Betty Davis! One of her favorite vacation destinations was Walt Disney World. Out of all of the four Disney parks she absolutely adored the Magic Kingdom. Emma thoroughly enjoyed teaching kids of all ages, and only wanted the best for them. Emma is survived by her husband, David Schultz; daughter, Rachel, and son-in-law Dale Barclift; mother, Eleanor DeShong; and first cousin, Debbie Brogden.
