A LOOK AROUND PALM MAR
COMING SOON, THE BIG APPLE!
to London from the winter of 2015. Tenerife Cabildo was involved in the discussions and president, Carlos Alonso said the link with New York would bring enormous benefits to the island. This route has not been operated for years; the last USA experience was Miama to Tenerife in the summer of 2009. Although occupancy was said to be 80 per cent, the season was not repeated by Air Europa. In the first quarter of this year, Tenerife received 4,508 American tourists which was up 6.1 per cent from the same period of 2013. Virtually all of them travelled an indirect route. There are hopes that New York could be followed by other connections such as Boston or
Chicago and even Canada. American visitors are quite happy to travel a fair distance to enjoy a good holiday and are prepared to pay quite a lot of money. The flight distance between New York and Tenerife would be around 5,340 kilometres. As well as bringing a tourism boost, Tenerife believes the New York proposal would further its ambition to become “an island ultra-connected” and help encourage business partnerships. *During 2013, of the 12 million tourists who came to the Canary Islands, 192,784 were from Russia and 95 per cent of them chose Tenerife. This number is again on the increase and the USA might well be the new trend for the future.

New York route to open up US market
F
OR all those who live in Tenerife, the prospect of being able to catch an easier flight to New York is an exciting new development.
But tourism chiefs on the island believe there will be a huge benefit the other way round, with American visitor numbers set to soar as Tenerife is marketed as “a dream destination”. Just a few years ago, the number of Russians who chose to come to Tenerife for their holidays was low but now, they represent the island’s fourth
biggest market. The scenario is likely to be repeated as far as the USA is concerned following confirmation by the Canary Government that tenders will be invited for airlines to run a number of subsidised new routes. New York will be one of them and it could start as early as next summer. The new development fund
was set up in April and all of the islands should see the benefit, with the plans including Lanzarote to Lyon, Gran Canaria to Rome and Fuerteventura to Paris. The Development Fund was set up specifically to help interested airlines put on new services by offering incentives. Discussions have been held with all the islands to seek their views about what is needed to fill the gaps and the routes will now go out to tender for the first six new routes.
Some could start in time for the winter season with Tenerife to New York for next summer and La Gomera
There has been a string of global incidents in recent months with people being hurt as they try to take pictures of themselves in unusual locations, such as the bull running in Pamplona or whilst doing an extreme sport, driving or simply larking around. In a national alert, police have warned against getting hooked on games, not putting offensive pictures on the net or relaying them to others on mobiles, telling parents if they are being bullied or blackmailed and always log out if using a shared computer whilst on holiday.
