Utter mess or a necessary evil?

Huge 1.8m euro scheme splits opinion

T

HESE are the roadworks causing massive headaches for traders, motorists and pedestrians alike in one of the busiest places in south Tenerife.

The area has been described as “an utter mess” and causing untold chaos and loss of trade to businesses as the road is dug up and traffic diverted. When a coach or car stops to let people off or parks in the wrong place, it is also causing major traffic disruption and long queues, particularly during the rush hour. Many traders have asked if it really is necessary to carry out such extensive work and particularly at this busy time of the year but Tenerife Cabildo says the end result will be well worth it. The 1.8 million euro scheme in Avenida de Los Pueblos in San Eugenio is part of an overall improvement plan for the tourist zones of Tenerife and is 50 per cent funded by the Canary Government. It is expected to take eight months to complete and is aimed at producing a nice environment, with more priority for pedestrians and a safer traffic flow and slowing down speeding cars. The Cabildo says owners will be given the chance to improve the facades of their premises but a number have raised the question of whether there will be any business left eight months on. However, the Cabildo says it will substantially improve the area, with wider pavements, more landscaping, relocated bus stops and a nicer shopping environment. What do you think about the project? Let us know by emailing info@tenerifenews.org.es about these or any other roadworks. Pictures welcome.

That’s not a hospital! Protests to continue

T

ENERIFE is likely to see a new round of protests about the new south hospital, still unfinished and unused due to lack of funds.

The Canary Government has prompted another barrage of complaints after announcing that work will continue but some services will still be missing, including operating rooms and an intensive care unit. Campaigners say this is ridiculous as a hospital without these facilities is not a hospital at all and they are once again demanding action. Meetings are already being held to discuss the way ahead and public demonstrations are expected. Canary Government Minister for Health, Brígida Mendoza said they would allocate 3.8 million euros in the 2015 budget so the Specialised Care Centre of Arona could be transferred to El Mojón, with the assistance and help of Tenerife Cabildo. However, their general budget did not cover provision of hospital services. The Platform for the South Hospital has warned that protests will continue unless the sum of ten million euros is provided to finish the building off properly and the support of all the southern Mayors is being enlisted. “Without hospital operating rooms and delivery rooms, it’s not a hospital. You can not keep confusing the society,” said its spokesman, Jordi Splugas. The local committee of Coalición Canaria has added its weight to the call and says enough money must be allocated to provide operating theatres and delivery rooms, not just 3.8 million euros. They say these are basic rights for local people and eerything must be done to meet the real needs of the south. Tenerife Cabildo has already indicated that it would try and find the money from somewhere to subsidise the transfer of the Specialised Care Centre if that would allow the Canary Government to concentrate on providing the operating rooms etc.
