CHRISTMAS CHEER T FOR THE CANARIES
Shock at three vicious crimes
Nativity Scene by Santi González Arbelo
ENERIFE and the Canaries are always considered safe venues, a big asset for holidaymakers, but three recent crimes here were still particularly shocking.
T
HE Christmas lights are up, the festive trees are decorated and the sales campaigns will soon be underway. It’s countdown to the festive season in the Canary Islands and the prospects aren’t looking too bad for either traders or consumers. And remember, there are two Christmases here in Spain - UK-style on December 24th/25th and Spanish-style on January 5th/6th. Latest spending figures suggest that despite another tough economic year, families don’t intend to scrimp on celebrations, gifts or food. They will still be prudent but anticipated expenditure in the archipelago will be above the national average, it has been reported, and there won’t be any cutbacks on last Christmas. What shoppers will be doing, however, is to shop around for bargains and may
well wait until the last minute to buy Christmas presents. Food shopping began as early as November to avoid panic or increased prices. A survey by the finance site, Rastreator.com revealed seven out of ever y ten Canarians would be waiting for the sales. The cost of food per person is put at just over 45 euros with the other major spending being on gifts for the family. Canary families will spend an average of 331
euros, which is 56 euros above the national average and the second highest spending community. Other essentials include the lotter y, Christmas Eve celebrations, New Year’s Eve expenditure and toys for children. There’s also a big trend towards shopping local which will please all the municipalities in Tenerife who
have managed to keep festive decorations and activities at the same level.
None of them were connected and it was just a coincidence they happened within the space of a few days, one of them being a murder and the other two vicious attacks. However, each prompted major police investigations. Tourists in San Eugenio were stunned when a knife attack took place near a local hotel complex. A man aged 35 and of Russian nationality was seriously injured when he was stabbed in the chest. A security guard alerted the emergency services to the incident which happened at about 8pm on December 6th in Calle Alemania. The injured man was stabilised before being taken to hospital in a serious condition. Even more shocking was the horrible discovery of a murder victim who was found in a field with a bag taped over his head and gagged. The shock find was made by a dog walker in a well-known beauty stop. The man who died was also a Russian who lived in the south of Tenerife in Los Cristianos. He was 52 years of age and had been reported missing by police two days before. The body, said to have shown signs of an extreme beating, was found at Águilas del Teide and is believed to have been there only for a short time. The murder prompted a major police hunt for a man known to the force and who had already jumped a road-block a few hours before the discovery. On Gran Canaria, the third vicious crime saw a police officer very seriously injured after he answered a call-out in Las Palmas and was assaulted by a martial arts expert who practices MMA. He fell backwards hitting his head on the concrete and has been in an induced coma in hospital in a critical condition. The policeman, who has worked in Tenerife, is married with a young son. The man accused of attacking him was arrested and remanded without bail. Some comments on social network sites suggest crime needs to be better controlled in the south of Tenerife with better coordination of efforts. Investigations are continuing and updates will be posted on the Tenerife News website of www.tenerifenews.org.es
