A PASSION FOR EASTER
PARAGLIDING DEATH RENEWS CONCERN G RAVE concern is being expressed about the number of paragliding accidents which are happening in the Canary Islands.
Tenerife and Lanzarote are said to be leading the way in the table of statistics which were added to last week with the death of a 40-year-old French man. The tragedy happened at the Jama barranco in the municipality of Vilaflor around noon on March 17th. The victim was practising the sport in the area when he plummeted into the ravine. An emergency call was made to the 1-1-2 control centre and police, the Civil Guard and the Emergency and Rescue Group went to the scene, together with the emergency helicopter.
Because of the difficult terrain in this area of Tenerife, crew from the helicopter were lowered down to help the victim but he died of the severe injuries received. Local paragliders say some sort of accident seems to be happening on a regular basis and so far this year, there have been at least 15 incidents. Most of them involve tourists, including English, German and French. The statistics are verified by official reports from the 1-1-2 emergency control centre. One of their most recent callouts was on March 21st when a paraglider crashed in a

ENERIFE will be celebrating Easter in traditional style and hopefully, with huge crowds.
Hopes are high that the Easter weekend will be a busy one for the island, with hundreds of thousands of holiday-makers set to benefit from the pound/ euro exchange rate. The only cloud on the horizon appears to be concern over the price of air fares which shoot up at Easter and are still seen by many as prohibitive. Tourism chiefs are aware of the problem and are working on the issue. Throughout Tenerife, there will be Easter services,
traditional processions and parades, religious performances, exhibitions and musical celebrations. In Adeje, the spectacular and moving Passion Play will be held on Easter Friday, April 3rd and locations like La Laguna and La Orotava will also be leading the way with full programmes. There will also be a passion play in Granadilla at 9pm on March 28th when about 50 residents will recreate Biblical scenes for about one hour.
mountain area of Tegueste in Lanzarote and suffered back injuries. He had to be rescued by firefighters. There were also reported accidents on March 16th, again in Lanzarote and in Taucho (Adedje) on March 2nd. Accidents also take place on the other islands, including La Palma. Experts say the unusual conditions encountered in the Canary Islands with its strong winds and unexpected gusts can take even an experienced paraglider by surprise. Air conditions here are said to be very different from those found in Europe but enthusiasts flock here because of the better winter weather. One Spanish newspaper has taken the debate one step further by suggesting that

WO people were taken to hospital after a fire drama in Icod de los Vinos.
A 67-year-old man and 19year-old youth both suffered mild poisoning after inhaling smoke. The fire broke out in a property in La Florida at just after 1pm on March 21st and led to a call to the 1-1-2 control centre. The emergency services, including the police, fire brigade and Civil Guard, went to the scene and managed to put out the flames. The fire had started in the kithen. Medics tended both men before an ambulance took them to hospital in the north.

holiday-makers who buy a paragliding experience as part of a package might feel pressurised into going out in less than ideal weather conditions because they would otherwise lose their money. Representatives of the official sport here on Tenerife have been pressing for tighter regulations regarding qualifications, training and insurance for tourists who act independently rather than through a federated club. The general message has to be take care, be careful, be prepared, don’t take risks, have insurance and go with a verified club or trainer. And remember, if you do have an accident which is deemed “reckless”, you might also get a hefty bill for your rescue!
