RED TAPE FEARS OVER HOTEL RENEWALS Arona praises
Tenerife opens first-ever outdoor cinema
Mass offered in memory of the victims / Gerard Zenou

OTELIERS in Tenerife have stressed the huge importance of continuing to renew hotel infrastructures and the dangers of red tape getting in the way.
The hotel employers’ association, Ashotel has been involved in a series of meetings where this important message has been hit home, together with concerns that some municipalities still have to get their Plans for Modernisation and Improvement approved. The group says it is concerned because delays could mean the loss of financial aid and prevents Tenerife from moving foward with the times. It means a number of planned projects have still not been given the green light and Arona has been quoted as one of the most important areas in this situation. Ashotel president, Jorge Marichal said it was vital to get these PMMs approved without further delay to help districts such as Arona and Tenbel in Costa del Silencio. Sr. Marichal estimated that 67 per cent of the hotel accommodation in the Canary Islands needed some sort of renovation, actions which were essential “to maintain the competitiveness of the islands’ tourism nationally and internationally.” Ashotel considers that the rehabilitation of public and private tourist areas is the main issue facing the islands at the moment and has called on the Canary Government to speed up plans and permissions. Sr. Marichal reinforced his comments during the official inauguration of the revamped Meliá Jardines del Teide in Costa Adeje. A 6.5 million euro refurbishment took nine months to complete. Before the ceremony, representatives of the hotel group and business leaders spoke about the issues facing Tenerife, including the need for improvements in the airport infrastructure, a third lane on the TF-1 and boosted air links. Sr. Marichal said that in the last year, four hotels had been renovated, providing 6,000 beds, and he stressed how essential it was to continue. He also said increased taxes as a result of these renovations for the State should be partially ploughed back into tourism investments.
“great human qualities” after tragedy
E
VERY single person involved in the Los Cristianos building collapse tragedy on April 14th is to receive a personal message from Arona Council. There is still massive shock and grief following the horrific incident in the centre of the tourist area in which seven residents lost their lives. At the time of going to press, no official statement had been made about the cause of the collapse “like a pack of cards” of the residential building and the zone remains sealed off whilst clearance work continues. At a recent meeting, Arona council unanimously agreed to send out a letter commending every single rescue worker for their magnificent efforts following the tragedy. These include ever yone from firemen, police and medics to translators, psychologists and volunteers. “We share the pain of the families of the victims,” says the letter which praises the professional services, groups,
institutions and individuals for “devoting themselves, body and soul” during the aftermath and the “great human qualities” demonstrated. The council meeting stopped for one minute in posthumous tribute to the seven people who died. Residents of adjoining properties who were evacuated until the area is deemed safe are receiving financial aid to help with their displacement.

ENERIFE has introduced a novel idea to keep families occupied in the evenings - the island’s first-ever outdoor cinema!
Visitors and local residents can now enjoy top movies under the stars on the terrace of the imposing Magma Centre in Costa Adeje (the magnificent stone building next to the bus station in Playa de las Americas). There is always a choice of two languages for each movie by switching between channels on comfy headphones. The programme is available on http://www.openaircinematenerife.es/ where tickets can be booked online or you can buy them at the entrance (depending on

Movies coming up include Thin Ice, Labyrinth, Blended, Bridget Jones - The Edge of Reason and Horrible Bosses. Organisers are even offering warm and soft blankets to rent should the evening air turn a bit chilly! To add to the cinema atmosphere, a variety of soft drinks, beer, wine and popcorn will be available from the bar.
