IS TENERIFE IN DANGER OF BECOMING “BORING” AS TOURISM STRATEGY CHANGES? Young people need more night life, say entrepreneurs

T

ENERIFE is in danger of becoming “boring” and appealing only to older people unless more is done to attract young holidaymakers.

Local businesses in the south believe there has to be a balance between the tourist who comes to the island looking for fun and the one who wants relaxation. They say the entertainment industry must not be forgotten by tourism chiefs and believe “red tape” is preventing many entrepreneurs from opening up new nightlife venues. The Circle of Entrepreneurs Tenerife South (CEST) is full of praise for Tenerife and its success in turning around visitor numbers, opening up new markets, increasing flight locations and winning back the domestic market from the mainland. Occupancy is also described as “excellent”. But according to reports in leading Spanish newspaper, Diario de Avisos, the organisation still believes the entertainment supply is lacking and that young holidaymakers are being lost. They fear that in the medium term, Tenerife risks becoming “boring” to this important segment and things to do, both during the day and night, are “insufficient”. CEST says the number of younger people opting for the island has fallen “considerably” when compared with the 1990s and early years of 2000. One of the few places left for nightlife for the young tourist is Veronica’s Strip in Playa de las Americas which continues to split opinion. Some say it is out of place in Tenerife’s new

image, others say it still plays an essential role and is accepable because it is an area within its own right and segmented away from other resorts. CEST says many municipalities seem reluctant to grant licences for entertainment venues but they would support new businesses such as music bars or clubs if they offered a quality service. The need to properly control noise, opening times and occupation of public spaces would, however, be essential. Entrepreneurs say they would also support use of the beaches for entertainment events and are bringing this call to the attention of Spain’s coastal department. They also believe the terraces of cafes and bars should be used for events if properly controlled. According to Diario de Avisos, the call by CEST is supported by the hotel employers’ association ASHOTEL. President, Jorge Marichal estimates that the number of young tourists is down by more than 300,000 when compared with a decade ago and the key to reversing this trend is to offer more entertainment options but “classy” ones. “We must be intelligent, aware that this visitor segment represents a significant portion of the pie in the tourist business, “ he said. “The south needs more nightlife and in the day.” He too believes the vast

areas of beaches on Tenerife should be better used but agrees that there has to be a balance between the younger visitor and the ones who want quiet and relaxation. Ideas being put forward include beach clubs, both day and night, and sporting tournaments on the beach. It is hoped new innovations like the Hard Rock Hotel in Playa Paraiso will help to win back young tourists. Tenerife is not alone in this dilemma as other holiday destinations, such as Ibiza and Mallorca, are currently launching new strategies which concentrate more on quality tourism and family appeal and bringing in young people to have a great time without getting drunk or noisy. What do you think about this issue? Are the “boring” fears justified? Should there be more vibrancy in the south of the island or is the formula just right? Kitesurfing Hotel objections O death

A

37-year-old man has died whilst kite-surfing off a beach in Lanzarote.

The tragedy happened in Famara in the municipality of Teguise in the late afternoon. The man had to be rescued after he disappeared into the water, for some unkown reason. He was found to be in cardiac arrest and lifeguards tried to save his life and emergency medics took over on their arrival but without success. An investigation was opened to determine what happened.

PINIONS continue to clash over plans for a luxury hotel near the beach of La Tejita in El Medano.

The project was announced by the Mayor of Granadilla, Jaime González Cejas who said the new five-star resort would be a very welcome asset to the area and generate wealth and employment. But others beg to differ and around 100,000 signatures have been added to a protest petition started on the web platform change.org to press the Canary Government to rescind permissions. The objectors claim another hotel is not needed and definitely not in this location as it would encroach on a very natural space much valued by local people and visitors.
