BULLETPROOF VESTS
Arona sets out policing aims
A
RONA Council is pledging to spend almost 1.3 million euros on improving policing in the municipality, including the purchase of bullet-proof vests. Councillor for policing, Carolina Reverón outlined the plans which are currently out for public consultation. As well as investing in bulletproof vets which they don’t have at the moment, 41 new vehicles will be purchased to “fill the resource gap” and ensure replacement of existing ones, some of which are nine years old. Carolina Reverón said they
had carried out a study of what was needed, adding: “From this analysis, we have planned a series of actions in the short, medium and long term in line with most urgent needs.” Other aims included a new police station and more officers. “We are working to provide agents with the means to enable them to carry out their work in the best conditions,”
she said. Money was also being
allocated for new uniforms and electric scooters.

UERTO de la Cruz has given itself a pat on the back after trying a new innovation to attract visitors to the municipality which has now paid for itself at least five times over.
A promotional video has been seen 50,000 times and led to around 35,000 retweets, potentially bringing millions of new customers to the tourist town. The project was presented at the FITUR tourism fair and was unprecedented in the tourist promotion of Puerto. “We can say without doubt that it has been a success,” said Dimple Melwani, tourism councillor. “Based on advertising space, it has shown a return in revenue of five times. However, we shouldn’t just emphasise the economic side because the potential audience the campaign reached is 29 million, especially through online media and radio.” The promotional video featured two bloggers, Yolanda and Mark, who have been around the world.

Adeje outlines Drug traffickers caught in the ambitious plans SEVEN ARRESTS

act
RUG traffickers have been caught redhanded trying to smuggle hashish into the Canary Islands.
As a result of a tip-off from a local resident who spotted a suspicious boat, police went to the Papelillo beach in Lanzarote in the early hours of the morning and intercepted the unloading process. Seven men were arrested as they took the bales of hash
off the six metre long boat. The drugs weighed about 25 kilograms and a geo location device was also seized. All seven suspects are of North African origin. Police say their investigation remains open and have not ruled out further arrests.

EUROPEAN FUNDING
OLICE have arrested two thieves who deliberately homed in on travel reps in hotels in the south of Tenerife.
They took advantage of “welcome meetings” in receptions to steal items such as laptops, cash and mobile phones. Police said they got away with around 7,000 euros during the spate of thefts which appear to have been mirrored elsewhere in the Canaries as well. They also took electronic equipment, personal documents and bank cards.
DEJE has been outlining future plans involving spending around 64 million euros on “sustainable urban development” between now and 2022. Projects will include revitalisation of the centre, restoration of the Casa Fuerte, upgrading various districts and co-existence of the tourist and residential zones. Mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said the plans were “designed for people” and to work towards the best for a municipality
with two distinct parts ie for the tourists and for local residents. A bid has been made for European funds, the first phase of which is asking for 15 million euros. It has already passed the assessment phase and a decision should be known in the next few weeks. The council is very keen to
see improvements in the historic centre, including rehabilitation of the Casa Fuerte which it believes should be a landmark building, together with the construction of a car park in front of it. The Mayor listed other important sites such as the Barranco del Infierno, Convent, church and plaza de España where an interpretation centre is envisaged.
The plan also includes the construction of a walk to the edge of the ravine that links the heart of the historic centre with the tourist centre directly. “It is a very ambitious project but it is possible and would start now,” he said. The council would also like to “integrate” the tourist zone of the centre of Adeje with the residential area and to develop the central part of the municipality from the Casa Fuerte to El Galleon.

ENERIFE and La Palma will host the prestigious Starmus Festival from June 27th to July 2nd and hope it will once again turn the eyes of the world to the Canary Islands. The event brings together eleven Nobel Prize laureates in physics, chemistr y, medicine and economics, along with experts and artists from other disciplines. The Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication will also be presented, recognising outstanding contributions to scientific dissemination in science, art and cinema. Brian Eno, keynote speaker of this edition, has created a unique composition as a tribute to Professor Hawking, based on the sound of the stars. The musical agenda will feature unique shows like the Sonic Universe concert, in which Hans Zimmer, Sarah Brightman with the Symphony Orchestra of Tenerife and the rock band Anathema, will offer exclusive performances. The full programme of this third edition was formally presented in Madrid when president of Tenerife Cabildo, Carlos Alonso said: “We are delighted to host again in Tenerife this important event, that highlights the public’s growing interest in sky observation activities.”
“We hope that the meeting of all these top figures in one of the world’s major capitals for stargazing will inspire many other people to visit us and discover our wonderful island. As The New York Times stated recently in an extensive report about the astronomical tourism and the possibilities of Tenerife, our goal must remain the excellence. “ “Holding Starmus in Tenerife is for certain an achievement of this goal. In this new edition the guests will bring us many things, but is also very valuable what we can offer. We have the best sky, with two of the most important astrophysical observatories in the world, plant and marine species not found anywhere else and the best highmountain volcanic ecosystem.” Brian May, former Queen guitarist and Rick Wakeman, from the progressive rock group Yes, will once again be among the guests in this edition, together with the rock band from Liverpool, Anathema. P
UERTO de la Cruz council is pressing ahead with a plan to construct a new underground car-park.
The project is in association with the Consortium for the Rehabilitation of Puerto and will provide 310 spaces on three floors located in the basement. It will be constructed in Plaza de la Constitución. The blueprint was approved and first released in 2013 and is now set to go out to tender. The land is owned by the municipality. In the near future, the council intends to hold a meeting with businesses in the area to inform them about the car-park. Councillor for town planning and the environment, Juan Carlos Marrero said the creation of the parking spaces at the plaza would meet an historical demand from residents and traders. The Mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez joined with councillor
for economic promotion, Alfonso Cabello to present a new strategy with this aim in mind. They said they were “very excited” to implement the activities as soon as possible and mark the beginning of a path which private enterprise and the public administration should travel together. Sr. Bermudez said Santa Cruz was currently enjoying good economic data and the catering sector carried a lot of weight, hosting 15 per cent of the establishments on the island. Gastronomy was also the favourite activity for people of Santa Cruz to launch new
business project. To this end, the council wanted to streamline opening procedures. Other measures had already included the elimination of the fee for occupation of land for the installation of tables and chairs on the terraces. “Santa Cruz is the capital of the island, it is true, but it is much more than that, it has all the ingredients to be the heart of Tenerife,” said the Mayor. Sr. Cabello said that on the gastronomic front, the aim first was to be a leader at regional level and then nationally.

T
HE fantastic Siam Mall commercial centre in Costa Adeje has celebrated its first birthday!
It’s hard to believe that a year has gone by already but May 22nd saw a number of events to mark the success of this shopping/restaurant/ supermarkt/entertainment centre. Everyone involved with Siam Mall is delighted with its success and believe this first year has consolidated its position as one of the best quality commercial centres in Tenerife and a “must visit” location for tourists who come to the south. The keys to its success are an attractive offering of shops, supermarket, restaurants, children’s play areas etc, together with an innovative design and high quality and comfort. A full programme of events
was staged to celebrate the occasion, culminating with an afternoon fiesta. There were numerous musical performances, acrobats and a dancing group to liven up a happy Sunday. There was also a raffle in which lucky winners got some super prizes, not least a 1,500 euro gift voucher to spend in the mall, a trip to Marrakech and various gifts from the individual shops. Parallel to this event, the first meeting of professionals in the tourism industry also took place, bringing together more than 150 representatives of the hotel trade for an afternoon of brainstorming and activities.
Expected to be attended by around 250 route development professionals, the island will become the ‘hub’ where airlines, airports and tourism authorities will discuss how to further develop the aviation industry in the African continent. Routes Africa will take place from June 26th to 28th at Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque Resort (Costa Adeje). The decision to hold this renowned forum in Tenerife was due to the island’s strategic location and ambitions. Just 300km off the coast of Morocco, Tenerife is closer to the African continent than the European mainland. This is why the island aims to become a connecting aviation hub between continents: Europe, África and the Américas. Carlos Alonso, President of the Tenerife Island Government, said: “Tenerife’s long-
term aim is to become a logistical stepping stone to äfrica, building on our strong historical ties with the continent. Routes África is an important part of our activities to strengthen our economic and transport links through new aviation services.” Some of the leading airlines that have signed up for the event include South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, ASKY Airlines, Binter Canarias, Iberia and Norwegian. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicts that seven of the ten fastest growing passenger markets over the next 20 years will be in Africa (Malawi, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Central African Republic, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia). Aviation in the continent currently generates more than $80 billion in GDP and supports 6.9 million jobs. By bringing together senior
decision makers from the aviation industr y, the organisers of Routes África hope to harness the potential for growth in the African continent. Routes África adds to Tenerife’s credentials as an unrivalled destination to host world-class events. In the past few months, the island has welcomed, amongst others, the International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) – recognised as the most important international meeting for the golf travel industry; and the FIRST Lego
League Open European Championship – an international event aimed at promoting science and technology to young people. This June, Tenerife will host Starmus Festival – Tribute to Stephen Hawking, a unique fusion of science, music and art featuring some of the greatest minds of our time (27 June – 2 July). In September, Tenerife will also host Seatrade Cruise Med 2016 (21-23 September) – the largest cruise industry event focussing on the Mediterranean and its adjoining seas.

Campaign stepped up to clear abandoned cars A
TOUGH FINES
campaign to rid the streets of Los Realejos from abandoned cars is being stepped up with tougher fines.
The Mayor, Manuel Domínguez said inspections were being increased and more owners would be reported, with vehicles being forcibly removed and penalties imposed. It is estimated that sanc-tions could reach as high as 2,000 euros although action under the Canary Government’s waste
laws which typifies cars abandoned as a hazardous material and polluting can greatly multiply this amount. The Mayor stressed that if owners of abandoned cars came forward of their own accord, they would not be prosecuted and could take advantage of the free removal service. About 30 complaints are currently pending and are being reported to the regional government. Sr. Dominguez said a significant number of the
owners did not even live in the municipality. The council said it would
welcome residents’ backing for their campaign in that they should report abandoned cars.

Details were presented by the Mayor, José Julián Mena and the first deputy Mayor, José Antonio Reverón González. The council says it is able to make more investments after cancelling the municipal debt. Before this, it had

Matters had been made worse because the population had increased, as had visitor numbers to more than one and half a million tourists a

The second project is called “SOTURMAC” in the Azores, Canaries and Madeira through the Chamber of Commerce of Funchal and the Azores and involving the municipalities of Santana (Madeira) and Valsequillo (Gran Canaria) and
the universities of Madeira and La Laguna, as well as the heritage department of Tenerife Cabildo and the Chasna Isora region. This initiative aims to preserve and protect the important natural and cultural heritage of the area as a factor fundamental for tourism devlopment. A grant application valued at 2.7 million euros has been made to the European Community.
Radazul Bajo becomes full “zone of great tourist interest”
B
USINESSES in the Radazul Bajo area of El Rosario now have the freedom to open more hours, including on a Sunday.
This follows acceptance by the Canary Government of the local council’s bid to make this part of the municipality a “zone of great tourist interest”. This had already partly been approved but only to coincide with the celebration of sporting events. Now, the Ministr y of Economy, Industry, Trade and Knowledge has approved the extension of the order to all
Sundays and fiestas during the year. From now on, it means stores in Radazul Bajo can open on a Sunday if they wish. Both the Mayor of El Rosario, Escolástico Gil and councillor for commerce Yeray Gutiérrez welcomed the decision and said it would bring in extra business and encourage more commercial activity.

Tenerife firefighters officially June 7th is recognised for dedication deadline for and bravery referendum T proxy vote BRITISH EXPATS
LOS CRISTIANOS BUILDING COLLAPSE
HE bravery and fortitude of Tenerife’s firefighters, both full-timers and volunteers, has been officially recognised by the island’s Cabildo following the Los Cristianos building collapse on April 14th.
The crews were a crucial part of the rescue operation and spent days and nights at the scene searching for survivors. Three people were lucky to escape with their lives when the five-storey building suddenly collapsed like a pack of cards but seven people were killed. They were in their apartments when the building collapsed. The fire crews endured atrocious conditions to move the mountain of rubble, often using just their hands to remove the bricks and slabs for fear of hurting any survivor.
B
RITISH expats who have been registered to vote in UK within the last 15 years have until Tuesday, June 7th to apply for a proxy vote in the EU Referendum.
An act of recognition was presided over by the president of Tenerife Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, together with vicepresident and councillor for the environment, José Antonio Valbuena and the insular
director of security, Florentino Guzmán. Members of the Tenerife Consortium of Firemen and Association of Volunteer Firefighters who were on duty at the time of the collapse were honoured. The Cabildo praised the way the operation had been carried out, highlighting the co-ordination between the
different bodies and security forces, as well as the show of solidarity from firefighters from other islands who came over to Tenerife to help. The tremendous work of all others involved in the aftermath of the tragedy was also praised, with recognition given to their high degree of commitment and solidarity with those affected.

Five arrested in cocaine bust
F
IVE men, including a 17-year-old, have been arrested during a drugs operation in La Laguna.
Officers had set up surveillance following a tip-off that cocaine and speed were being sold from a property in the Los Majuelos area. At one stage, four individuals were seen going into a house and then leaving in a car which was followed and stopped. Officers found 8.2 grams of
cocaine, 7.8 grams of hashish and 1.3 grams of marijuana. The teenager’s home was also searched which revealed 39.2 grams of speed, 238 grams of cutting substances, two precision scales, 1.6 grams of heroin, 3.9 grams of hallucinogenic muhrooms, 674 grams of marijuana and 500 euros.
That is the final deadline for registering to take part in one of the most historic decisions that the British people will make for a generation. The deadline for registering for a postal vote has now passed, but you can still appoint someone you trust in the UK to vote for you. Simon Manley, British Ambassador to Spain, said: “Although the deadline for expats to vote by post in the EU referendum has now passed, you can still register to vote by proxy, as long as you do so by 7 June. We all know how important the referendum will be, for us, for our children, and for our country.” “Whether you think we should leave or remain, I would encourage those who have not yet registered to vote, and who are eligible to do so, to avail themselves of this final opportunity to have their say on 23 June. “I am well aware that expats who have lived overseas for more than 15 years are ineligible, and I know that many are frustrated about that. The government will bring forward the Overseas Ele-
ctor Bill to abolish this arbitrary time limit, but it must undergo full Parliamentary scrutiny and debate, so unfortunately it cannot be passed before the Referendum.” More than 120,000 people with Spanish IP addresses have now visited www.gov.uk/register-to-vote since the beginning of the year. And thanks to the online registration system, more than 180,000 expats worldwide have so far completed their registration to vote, nearly double the number for last year ’s General Election, which was itself a record figure. The process is easy and takes just five minutes. Go to www.gov.uk/register-tovote or search for ‘UK register to vote’ on www.gov.uk. You need only your National Insurance number and passport. If you did vote in the general election last year, don’t assume you are still on the electoral roll: just as in the UK, you must renew your registration every year. You have until 7 June to go online and make sure you can have your say.

HE emergency helicopter had to be called in to rescue a 59-year-old woman who fell whilst out walking along the Caleta de la Negra in the municipality of La Matanza de Acentejo.
The fire service, Civil Guard, emergency rescue group and medics were all involved because of the inaccessibility of the area. Police said she fell in a particularly steep zone and injured her leg. The woman was airlifted to Tenerife’s north airport where she was given treatment and then taken on to hospital. The accident happened in the popular hiking zone on the coast of Santa Ursula.

Puerto welcomes boost in Future vets communications with 4G coverage get fascinating
P
UERTO de la Cruz has pledged to continue its ongoing campaign to improve the communications network in the municipality.
The local council has announced that the mobile operators Telefónica, Vodafone and Orange are offering with effect from May 20th a 4G service on the 800MHz band. To ensure compatibility of the new technology with Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), the operators have also launched Llega800, the entity responsible for resolving any interference in the reception of the television signal and endorsed by the Ministry of Industry and FEMP. The arrival of 4G continues the implementation of the campaign carried out generally in the national territory since last July and due to culminate in March 2018. To check the locations where these services are already active , consult the following link: https://www.llega800.es/ listado-de-municipios-activos/ Councillor for new technology, Sandra Rodríguez said the improvement in the services would allow people in Puerto to enjoy mobile highspeed connections with LTE (4G) technology with better coverage inside buildings and in a wider area. It placed Puerto at the front of 4G telephony. “4G deployment is part of the Royal Decree 805/2014, of September 19, dated April 1, 2015, governing the release of the frequencies between 790
and 862 MHz (channels 61 to 69 UHF) which until then were used for the reception of Digital Terrestrial Television, a process also known as Digital Dividend. Thereafter, these frequencies were assigned to the mobile operators to deliver
its mobile services 4G,” a spokesman explained. Daniel Espín, spokesman for Llega800, said the advanced mobile network would introduce two fundamental improvements. One would be to solve reception problems in areas where coverage previously failed and the other, inside buildings. “The new generation of 4G
technology also facilitates the introduction of new services in the business area and government, and business mobility applications with high multimedia content or use of the video call, among others,” he said. Chafiras traffic and coastal work plea outlined to Canary government

MPROVEMENTS needed in the San Miguel de Abona municipality have been stressed to the Canary Government’s director general of tourism infrastructure.
Issues high on the agenda include the need to solve the constant traffic jams at Las Chafiras and a new seafront promenade at Amarilla Golf, together with a natural pool. The visit by Héctor Suárez Morales was hosted by the Mayor, Arturo González and
the councillor for public works, Víctor Chinea. They told the Minister about the needs of the area and took him on a coastal visit so he could see the present situation for himself. The Mayor said investment was needed for new infrastructures and highlighted the call for improvements to Playa de San Salvador and Playa de San Blas.

ORO Parque opened its doors for 25 students in their first yearof studying veterinary medicine at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. They came to Tenerife to get to know the daily work of the professional vets and were given a guided tour by Javier Almunia, director of environmental affairs. The students also learned about the health care of cetaceans, thanks to an interesting presentation by the trainers themselves who explained their technique of encouraging the dolphins and orcas to participate in their daily medical check-ups. The group also visited the innovative technical rooms of the park as well as the premises for personalised feed preparation. Planet Penguin, as one of the biggest penguin sanctuaries worldwide, was also part of their visit. During the whole day, the students showed interest and enthusiasm, especially at Animal Embassy, one of the most emotional zones at Loro Parque and Loro Parque Foundation. Here, they saw the baby-station for the hand-rearing of birds and learnt about the 130-plus projects of the foundation for the protection of biodiversity and natural habitations, spread over the world.

The Sound of Music clearly heard at Wingate School
W
INGATE has just completed its production of The Sound of Music and what a show it was! The 42 students in the Drama group did everything themselves, not just the performing on stage but the scenery, the backdrop, made the props and designed the poster and programmes as well as providing the backstage crew. Max Deprez was as always, a master of the sound and light and this year, acting in a teaching role for his successor. Students in years 7-9 can choose to take part in the Drama group as part of the school enrichment programme and this year the production was more of a technical challenge for them in terms of the music and the movement that went along with the songs. Keela Scammell as Maria was superb as were the other main characters of Maxim Bruss as Captain von Trapp, Sara Fakhour y Martin as The Baroness, Karina Sabnani as Auntie Max Detweiler and not forgetting the children of course, Oceane Librizzi,
Valeria Goryun, Lucia Otero, Diègo Mèndez Ramòn, Janvi Mahtani Balani, Ruby Coogan McCann and Chantella Noble. The rendition of ‘The Lonely Goatherd’ went down particularly well with the audience with our ‘live’ puppets as well as the cuckoos in ‘So long, farewell’! Once again this year, Lucia Cardwell enraptured the audience with her opening dance sequence which she choreographed herself. All-in-all, The Sound of music really did ring out from the Wingate School Hall!
Help dogs and follow the rules with Acción del Sol
OFFICIAL PROCEDURES
A
CCIÓN del Sol’s main goal since opening the refuge at Granadilla eight years ago has been to reduce the number of dogs abandoned on the streets of Tenerife. That is why they have accepted the official rules and regulations and have reached agreements with Tenerife Cabildo and its various municipalities in the south of Tenerife. The centre’s aim is to press forward towards responsible management concerning the issue of animal protection by both parties. Collection procedure: The local police notify the collector and arrange the collection of the abandoned dog. The Civil Protection, or the probation officer, picks up the animal and transports it in a specially-adapted dog collection box to the shelter. On arrival, the dog is issued with a serial number for registration and documented. Three copies are made and all are signed and sealed by the manager/centre veterinarian. The official document states the meeting site, date, time, race, sex and colour of the dog. The dog collector will also take a picture of the animal for the document and checks with a microchip reader to see whether it has been chipped If the animal has a microchip, the owner will be
notified immediately. He/she then has 21 days to remove the animal from the centre, after passing through the local police or Town Hall and showing the relevant documents. If, after 21 days, the dog is not claimed, the dog will be in the custody of the shelter. If the owner had not registered a “lost pet” complaint at the local police, he/ she faces a substantial fine. Who holds the registered document? One copy stays in the shelter, the local police have another, while the third goes to the relevant Town Hall. Although the Accion del Sol shelter can house up to 200 animals and is regarded as one of the largest refuges in Tenerife, there is insufficient space for all the stray dogs. That means there are strict controls in place, which are necessary to prevent overcrowding and enable staff to maintain the relevant standards of animal protectio-n and welfare. For that reason Marion Gonzalez, who runs Accion de Sol and is a director of Aktiontier – the German charity which sponsors the refuge – stresses that it is not a place where people can simply offload their pets.
Punto seeks new owner
“If a person decides to have an animal, then he/she must maintain responsibility for the pet’s lifetime. The refuge is not obligated to accept pets which are no longer cherished by their owners,” said Marion. “Although this sometimes causes arguments with people who want to abandon dogs at the shelter, there can be no exceptions to this rule. “The refuge takes in only those animals which have been abandoned in those municipalities where there is an agreement with the Town Council.” Marion adds: “We have never said we can solve the global problem on this Island. We simply want to be an example of how you could take the issue of animal protection from the authorities and other protectors. “As some municipalities receive Government payments, it is our duty to comply with the agreements. Naturally, this also includes crimes of mistreatment. “ We all need to work together without repercussions, and to ensure that people who abandon their pets are punished. “If we fail to do this, then the problem of abandoned and non-neutered dogs will continue.”

Ten years of success but still much to be done
CATS’ WELFARE TENERIFE
How many stray cats do you think Cats’ Welfare neutered last year? We started around ten years ago with just two people selling books to raise enough to neuter one cat a week. Now we are a large organisation covering the whole of the south of Tenerife with part time volunteers and last year we neutered 731 cats. That’s a MASSIVE figure we are very proud of. That’s on top of homing more than 140 cats and kittens and treating many many more that were sick and injured. We couldn’t do that without the help of the public and volunteers that support us. There is always more to be done though. We always need more people to help. We never have enough foster carers for all the requests for emergency foster care. We never have enough money to treat all the cats and kittens that are sick and injured and our waiting list to go and trap cats needing help is very long. If you have a few hours
spare now and then and would like to help but don’t know how, please ring or whatsapp Theresa (680475500 seven days a week 09.00 – 18.00) for a no obligation chat about how you could help us.
Adoptions
At this time of year (and throughout the summer) we are inundated with kittens requiring homes so please contact us if you are looking for one. Let’s please not forget though that we also have adult cats looking for homes. Boris is a fabulous ginger teddy bear who you may remember had a broken leg that was operated on and now he is as right as rain. He’s been waiting a long time to be chosen which is such a shame as hes so loving and cuddly. If you are looking for a loving companion Boris could be the cat for you. He is fine with other cats and would probably be no problem with dogs as he is so easy going. He is castrated, microchiped and vaccinated, and also Leukae-
mia negative. All cats go on trial for two weeks so you can be sure they are the perfect companion for you. All cats and kittens awaiting homes can be seen on our website www.catswelfare-tenerife.com/pets. If you don’t see what you are looking for on our website ring or whatsapp Theresa as ever yday we have new arrivals and you can be added to our waiting list.
Foster carers needed
With the huge influx of kittens and the steady stream of adult cats currently requiring a temporary home whilst we find something more permanent, we are always looking for people willing to foster on a temporary basis for us. We provide ever ything required. Food, litter, bedding, bowls etc and pay for all veterinar y care. It doesn’t matter if you are only here for a few weeks or months. It’s a great way to have a pet without any long term commitment. If you would like to have a no obligation chat, we would be
happy to answer any questions you have; or whatsapp Theresa on the number above.
Donations
Do you have anything to donate to help us raise funds. Items can be dropped into the shop on San Blas in Golf del Sur (Behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week 10.00 until 18.00 but on Saturdays is open from 11.00 until 16.00. Seven days fun packed “dream holiday” for the Polish, UK and Canarian under previleged children
T
HE arrival of a group of under-privileged children from Poland and the UK with their efficient carers at the Reina Sofia Airport, on the 29th of April and the 30th of April respectively, for a “7-Day Fun-Packed Holiday” is one of Lion’s Club Tenerife Sur´s, laudable aspirations to help as many people as possible in every community around the world. The “dream-holiday” visitors were duly received at the Tenerife South Airport on their arrival by the Lion’s Club president Mr. Norman Goodall, the executives, members and supporters. After the grand reception, the visitors were driven to Hotel Princesa Dacil where they will stay and dine
for seven days. There was dinner the same night between the Lion’s Clubs members and their guests immediately after arriving at the hotel. The next day started with a visit to Loro Parque where the Polish and the UK visitors joined with other under-privileged children
from La Laguna. As usual, at Loro Parque, the children had endless fun; with smiles and appreciation beaming on their innocent faces. There was copious lunch reserved for over sixty people on that day at break time. The fun ride sadly came to an end and the children from La Laguna were dropped off at their home in La Laguna while, the UK and Polish children continued to Hotel Princesa Dacil at Los Cristianos where they stayed for the rest of their “Dream Holiday” The president of the Social Services of Arona was a guest of honour at the Charter Night
dinner at WestHaven Bay Restaurant in Costa del Silencio. Before the grand dinner which was attended by all Lion’s executives, members and supporters, Snra. Elena Cabello Moya made a speech in recognition and appreciation for the constructive help and positive responses being offered to our local community by the Lion’s Club. The Club motto is the “People who help people” The Club’s organising committee made sure the children visited and had a taste of all the important tourist attractions in the Island, starting with a visit
to: Castillo San Miquel, Loro Park, Siam Park, Aqualand, Adeje Golf Pitch and Putt and a specially arranged Whales and Dolfins boat ride; and much more. Lion’s Club Tenerife Sur, has been for 30 years engaged in

woman practising windsurfing in Gran Canaria had a lucky escape after she was struck in the head by the sail.
She fell dazed into the ocean but was rescued by other bathers who saw what happened. Police said she nearly drowned. The accident happened off the beach of Pozo Izquierdo in Santa Lucía de Tirajana in the mid-afternoon and led to an emergency call to the 1-1-2 service. Before the arrival of the Civil Guard and medics, a doctor who happened to be in the area treated the woman, in her 30s, at the scene. The Civil Guard and medics then attended and she was transferred in a serious condition to the University Hospital.
OFFICIAL REQUEST
T
HE Canary Islands must pay attention to every small detail if it is to maintain its position as one of the leading holiday destinations in the world. The message was relayed by the Canary Government’s Minister of Tourism, María Teresa Lorenzo during the third edition of the business forum “Futurismo Canarias” held in Los Cristianos. She was joined at the official opening by Minister of Tourism of Tenerife Cabildo, Alberto Bernabé, and the mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena. María Teresa Lorenzo said times were changing and the islands had to adapt. “New habits, new tourists
with new motivations and new concepts of travel and experience converge with new competitors, new business models and new ways of marketing and communication,” said the minister. “A change that speaks of digitisation and customisation but also excellence, sustainability and we cannot ever forget, value. To all this we must adapt.” Sr. Bernabé said Tenerife was committed to its bid to be “a modern and innovative destination that enhances its
qualities as a leading holiday destination in Europe.” He stressed the need for the public and private sector to work together on improving quality, not just through the modernisation and improvement of the tourism infrastructure but “also the care of small details which give us added value that our visitors appreciate.” Arona’s Mayor echoed these sentiments and said the municipality was committed to playing an active part in promoting a new model of sustainable tourism. The conference went on to discuss “hot topics in tourism” and essential needs, such as good airports, more and
diverse leisure offerings and getting rid of bureaucracy and red tape in order to encourage new initiatives. It was agreed there were some problems which needed to be addressed in relation to hotel cleaners but it was felt any irregularities were in the minority. There were talks from a gourmet chef and travel journalist and also on the use of digital technology in tourism marketing, such 360º videos. The day was supported by a number of organisations and institutions, including the hotel employers’ association Ashotel and special mention was given to Caixabank and Gas Natural.

Canary residents love to holiday on their own islands, figures reveal
M
ORE and more people who live in the Canary Islands are choosing to stay in the archipelago when it is time to take a holiday.
New figures reveal that at least 1.5 million opted for a break in their home territory during 2015, 100,327 more than the previous year and seven per cent up. It is estimated they generated a turnover of around 400 million euros.
The data comes from the Canary Government’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport and coincided with the ninth edition of the Canary Holiday Fair. This was attended by more than 35 tourism companies. They were welcomed by
Deputy Minister of Tourism, Cristobal de la Rosa; director general of tourism, Candelaria Umpiérrez and manager of Promotur Turismo of the Canaries, María Méndez. The event aims to bring together all businesses involved in the Canar y tourism industr y with the intention of strengthening it. “Domestic tourism is an important source of business that reaches 400 million euros, a figure comparable to the turnover generated by the Irish market, the Italian market or the Swiss market, and higher than many others,” said Cristobal de la Rosa. Candelaria Umpiérrez said the Holiday Fair had become the only meeting point for Canar y tourism
providers, tourism intermediaries, travel agencies, representatives of tour operators and event organisers. María Méndez revealed the trends for this year were already looking very good. In March, the islands hosted 100,137 Canar y holidaymakers, a massive increase of 29.5 per cent on March of 2015. “”It is therefore a growing market we have fostered with domestic tourism campaigns such as #averquecaritasetepone and the platform www.voydebelingo.com, which offers activities and experiences in all the islands, both free and paid, plus a new profile on Facebook and Youtube,” she said.

The Cabildo says it cannot contravene the directive which is why the honey will be known for the time being at least as palm syrup.

Gran Canaria is attracting the most Canar y holidaymakers with a share of 42 per cent, followed by Tenerife with 31 per. The other islands have figures below ten per cent. August appears to be the most favoured month for stay at home holidays.

Better sea and air routes Fuerteventura aims to deal needed on El Hierro, with flight minister told “NEGATIVE IMAGE”
delays within one hour
T
OURISM chiefs on Fuerteventura are drawing up a new plan so that any holidaymaker facing a plane delay receives the best possible treatment. A meeting has been held between the Cabildo and airport officials, including baggage handlers. Island leaders believe delays and the way they are dealt with could give the tourist a bad image of Fuerteventura. They want to make sure this doesn’t happen and that delays and what happens once they are announced are dealt with quickly and efficiently. Those attending the meeting included Cabildo president, Marcial Morales and airport director, Luis López Chapí. Measures to be taken include the creation and availability of a whatsapp programme to announce delays as soon as possible. If it was necessary to put passengers up in an hotel, then transport would be immediately arranged and the
hotels booked. To this end, a special coordination group has been set up, with representatives of the airport, airlines, taxi firms and tour operators. Marcial Morales said the delays happened very infrequently but when they did, if not handled properly, then it could impact on people’s opinion of the island. The general aim is to provide answers to delays within an hour. Minister of Tourism, Blas Acosta said customers shouldn’t be the ones inconvenienced by an aircraft problem or cancellation. Delegate of handling company, Groundforce, Guillermo Pérez confirmed: “We are making all arrangements with bus companies, taxis and hotel to accommodate passengers in case of cancellation. “
ISLAND DISADVANTAGES
E
L Hierro is pressing for better air and sea routes in order to bring more tourists to the island and meet the needs of residents.
Cabildo president, Belén Allende recently met with the director general of transport for the Canary Government, Elías Castro Feliciano in Valverde to discuss various aspects. Among the topics was the need to prioritise the development of a Special Plan of air and sea connections to El Hierro on the occasion of the celebration in July 2017 of the LXIX edition of the Descent of the Virgen de Los Reyes. Maritime transpòrt also came under the spotlight once the current public service obligation to El Hierro comes to an end in November 2017. The Cabildo president said
connections to other parts of the archipelago should be allowed since the current contract only allowed Los Cristianos to El Hierro port and a single operator. Both agreed that new air routes to the island had to be considered to join the major tourist flow destinations and they would continue to work towards gaining a significant discount on the price of air transport. Belén Allende said they were very aware that residents of El Hierro were paying higher prices than elsewhere in the Canaries. Figures showed that the
average resident on El Hierro had to travel 5.3 times a year between islands at a cost of around 400 euros but in Tenerife, that statistic was just 1.1 times a year at a cost of 80 euros. The ongoing project to promote the use of electric cars on the island was also discussed. It has been decided
to divert some of the economic benefits of the hydro-wind power plant to improve infrastructure for the use of this sustainable form of transport. Other issues discussed included the needs of passengers who came to El Hierro with bulky equipment, such as divers, paragliders and cyclists.
Go-ahead given for two new five-star hotels in Lanzarote
P
ERMISSION has been given in principle to two new five-star hotels in Lanzarote.
The Governing Council of the Cabildo agreed to grant provisional classification and authorisation of the project. One will be in Playa Blanca with 48 units and 96 places and the other in Puerto del Carmen with 154 units and 308 places. Councillor for tourism, Echedey Eugenio praised the “comprehensive and thorough” work done by the team and said the two hotels would give an enormous boost to the accommodation provision on the island. “It is a fundamental step that
opens the door to hiring professionals from various fields and the reactivation of the island’s economy and at the same time, it is a guarantee for employees, suppliers and the tourism sector of the island, in general,” he said. Implementation of these two projects was proof of the beginning of the economic recovery of the island and a response to the arrival of more than two million tourists a year during the last five years. “We are reaping the fruits of a promotional strategy
based on a unique and different product,” he said. “Now, we must continue
working to creating tourism projects that are committed to quality and excellence.”

Gran Canaria to take more of the School drugs limelight after Brad Pitt filming message is a hoax success HOLLYWOOD EXCITEMENT
G
RAN Canaria believes it can become a mecca for filming large-scale productions after Brad Pitt became the latest star to take centre-stage on the island. The Hollywood actor caused enormous excitement as he spent four days in Las Palmas shooting scenes for the new war-time blockbuster “Allied”. Island leaders believe the film will notch up millions of euros worth of revenue, both in terms of the services used and the spin-off publicity. They said they were thrilled with the way everything went, from the moment Brad Pitt touched down at the airport looking every inch the superstar. Despite the soaring heat, he look cool and as handsome as ever in black trousers and open-necked shirt, topped with a black trilby and dark aviator-style sunglasses. “We just couldn’t believe it was the real Brad Pitt!” said
one stunned holiday-maker. Even the local council which has been heavily involved in making preparations for the filming admitted that “ever yone appears to be in a state of shock!” The production is being directed by Oscar winner Robert Zemeckis and also stars Marion Cotillard who arrived on the same plane. Shooting of the film, set in World War Two, started in London but the entire crew travelled out to the Canaries for scenes in both Gran Canaria and neighbouring Fuerteventura. The capital of Las Palmas was transformed into the streets of North Africa in the 1940s for the new movie which is expected to have an economic impact of between
ten and 20 million euros for the island. To make the scenes in “Casablanca” look authentic, modern-day touches like traffic lights and litter bins had to be removed. Tons of sand were brought in to put the finishing touches on the huge make-over. Even modern door lockers and knockers have been replaced and at one stage, camels were roaming the streets. Thousands of prop items were brought in or made on the island, including jugs, pots, water carriers and plates as part of a traditional souk. Economic development chief, Raúl García Brink said
it was the biggest production ever shot on Gran Canaria and would bring in thousands of more tourists once it hit the big screen in November. The support crew for the romantic thriller was around 400-strong and around 400 extras wer hired. Brad Pitt plays intelligence officer Max Vatan with co-star Marion Cotillard taking the role of French resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour. Together, they embark on a risky mission behind enemy lines. Despite tight security around the filming locations, tourists flocked to the sites in a bid to catch further glimpes of the actor. The island is now using the experience of “Allied” to showcase its attractions for filming and more than one production at a time if necessary. Members of the Film Commission have been in Cannes with a powerful sales pitch and says meetings with producers, funding agencies, studios and directors have been very positive. There are many advantages of filming in the Canaries, including tax savings. Tenerife and La Palma were also represented.

OLICE in the Canary Islands have warned that a message circulating on the web about drugs in schools is false.
The so-called alert is doing the rounds through WhatsApp and includes a warning to parents. It says a drug called “dulcecitos” is being trafficked in schools and colleges and says one youngster was given five of the pills and told to distribute them. The Civil Guard says the message is a hoax and the information contained is not true.

Plane crash at Lanzarote airport was just a drill
T
HE gruesome sight of bodies being carried away from a crashed aircraft was fortunately just a drill in Lanzarote.
The emergency services were all involved in the aftermath of the mocked up disaster next to the airport,
during which a plane was said to have crashed into the sea with 40 people on board. “Lanzarote Airport,
following the schedule established in its SelfProtection Plan, makes such practices in order to evaluate the responsiveness, the degree of coordination and response time of institutions involved in the care of aeronautical emergency,” a spokesman explained. “The purpose of the drill is to verify the correct implementation of the Self-
Protection Plan, evaluating the implementation of the general alarm protocol and therefore the lines of communication between the different teams in an emergency.” The exercise simulated the crash of a twin-engine plane from La Gomera which broke up in two whilst trying to land. The emergency crews were called on to deal wih six mock fatalities.

Cat owner phoned Police find 170 kilos of cocaine fire brigade on hidden inside 1,600 green plastic false pretences DRUG TRAFFICKING
A
man who called out the fire brigade to force open his front door because he wanted to see his two cats is facing a massive fine for wasting police time! In a phone call to the emergency services, the 40year-old man claimed his two “daughters” were trapped in a car because someone had poked sticks into the lock. But when fire engines rushed to the scene, he confessed his story was not completely true. It turned out his “daughters” were actually two cats and they were inside the man’s house where the front door lock had indeed been disabled because someone had tried to pick it open! The bizarre incident happened in the town of Calatayud in Zaragoza where
the frantic Spaniard is now facing prosecution for wasting police time. The fine could be up to 600,000 euros. Spanish newspaper ABC says the man admitted he had rather stretched the truth but was worried about the cats whom he referred to as his “daughters” because that was how he thought of them. The Aragón civil protection law specifically states that pet owners who call the police to receive faster help or lie to the police are subject to fines of between 150,001 euros and 600,000 euros.

P
OLICE have found a massive haul of cocaine worth millions of euros hidden inside nearly 1,600 plastic bananas!
Drugs squad officers had to slice open every one of them after discovering 19 boxes labelled as fresh fruit. The bananas inside looked
just like green, unripened bananas ready for export. On closer inspection, they were found to be plastic ones, carefully moulded to look like
genuine bananas. After cutting open each one, police found a total of 171 kilos of cocaine, carefully wrapped up in plastic bags before the bananas were resealed. The bananas were uncovered in the Spanish port of Algeciras in Cadiz following a length investigation into drug trafficking. “The fruit was being used as a guise to import the drug in containers from South America,” said a spokesman for the National Police who worked alongside officers from the Tax Agency. Police had received a tipoff that ships were bringing
drugs into Spain and discovered that a real fruit company had allowed its name to be used, as well as its storage warehouse. The manager is one of the gang arrested. Two containers coming in from Turbo in Colombia were intercepted and one of them was marked with a red X. When opened, it revealed 19 wooden boxes, each containing 85 plastic bananas. “You wouldn’t have noticed the difference,” said the spokesman. The police operation into the cocaine trafficking gang remains open and more arrests are expected.
History story about Spanish treasure backfires with faces of dictators COUNCIL APOLOGISES
C
OUNCIL officials had to apologise after a huge face of Hitler was projected onto a castle wall as part of an annual Spanish festi-
val.
Furious objectors took to the social network sites in their droves to object to the “video mapping” show in the town of Guadamur in CastillaLa Mancha, Toledo. The display was part of a conference which was meant to tell the story of how 26 precious crowns and gold crosses, encrusted with jewels, were unearthed in a local orchard between 1858 and 1861. The finds date back to the Kings of the Visigoths who
reigned in the seventh century. Although some of the pieces are on show in museums in Madrid and Paris, other items in the collection were either lost or stolen in the 1920s. Each year, Guadamur holds a conference and festival based on the era of the Visigoths and the treasures and this year, one of the highlights was a sound and light show. There was stunned silence
when the image of Hitler, together with Spanish dictator General Franco and Nazi commander Heinrich Himmler, were projected onto the facade of a privatelyowned castle. The Mayoress of Guadamur, Sagrario Gutiérrez said even she was surprised because the council had not known about the precise details of the show and blamed the organisers. Toledo council was forced to issue an apology, saying it did not support “any kind of public spectacle that includes content that does not have fit in our democratic and constitutional system.” It understood the aim was to explain the history about the Guadamur treasures and the negotiations which were involved over their final resting places. The dispute was settled in 1941 when Spain was ruled by Franco and Germany by the Nazis. Objectors said the show itself had been very good but
the histor y of the buried treasure could have been explained without the “offensive” image to illustrate the era of the 40s. Thousands of comments were posted on Twitter and Facebook with objectors said it was “an insult” to project such images and it was “embarrassing, sad and unfortunate.” However, some remarked: “History is history and cannot be changed.” Toledo council is said to have suspended a grant of 10,000 euros to the festival pending further explanations.

Spanish couple lost at sea for ten days survived on flying fish
AMAZING RESCUE
T
WO tourists who went on a pleasure cruise survived ten days lost at sea in a tiny boat and survived on raw fish and droplets of
rain.
Spanish nationals David Hernandes Gasulla and Marta Miguel, both 30, were presumed dead after they went missing on the vast South China Sea. Rescue services had given up hope of finding them safe and well after their empty boat was found adrift in the choppy waters. But out of the blue, David and Marta sent a message saying they had been rescued by Viatnemese fishermen. The crew had been operating in the waters illegally so did not send a message to the coastguard. The couple had been taken on an island-hopping trip in Malaysian waters north-east of the island of Borneo by the two owners of the 12 metre by 15 metre boat to explore corals and caves. They were both working at a hotel in Malaysia after leaving Spain because they could not find jobs. Their ordeal began when the
boat was flipped over by a strong wave and although all four managed to scramble back on board, they lost their drinking water and torches and had no food. They then spent the next ten days adrift, using the screen of their ruined mobile phones to deflect the sun and signal for help. David and Marta, together with Hong Kong citizen Tommy Lam Wai Yin and Armilla Alihassan of Malaysia, survived mainly on flying fish and small mollusks which had attached itself to the base of the boat. “I will never eat sashimi for a long time,” joked Lam, 44, who at one stage tried to swim to safety but abandoned his attempt when the others spotted sharks. For drinking water, they licked droplets condensing on the outside of a plastic bag of seawater left in the sun,
which Miguel had seen in a movie. At first, the castaways said they were angry but this later turned to calm and they even discussed death. At one stage, eight rescue boats were looking for them, together with two private jets, a team of divers and an emergency helicopter. When their empty boat was eventually found, there were fears they could have been kidnapped by sea pirates. Ironically, the four might have been rescued considerably earlier because they eventually found another working mobile in a plastic bag. Despite their ordeal, the couple and their two companions were found to be in relatively good health although weak and bedraggled. They spent a night in hospital in Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Malaysia’s Sabah in Borneo, and received treatment for mild dehydration and skin burns. Lam and Armilla were kept in longer. “We always had hope. At no time have thought it was the end,” said Marta. “My girlfriend is the strongest person I have ever known,” said David. The plucky couple are returning to Spain for a break with their relieved families but say they do intend to go back to Malaysia to set up their own business. A close relative back home in Spain said: “It just shows you that you should never give up hope.
Cocaine hidden inside Quality Street chocolates
MADRID AIRPORT
P
OLICE have arrested a 38-year-old plane passenger who tried to smuggle cocaine into Spain disguised as dozens of Quality Street chocolates! He was arrested at Madrid airport after going to the trouble of unwrapping 77 of the sweets, cutting them open, putting cocaine inside and then rewrapping them. He then put all of the chocolates back into the famous Quality Street tin and packed it into his hand luggage.
The man had arrived on a flight from Dubai when police at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas became suspicious. His bags were searched and two tins of chocolates discovered. “When we looked inside, we discovered 77 of the
sweets had been tampered with and were found to contain 1,500 grams of cocaine,” said a spokesman for the drugs squad. The passenger was arrested and all the chocolates confiscated, including the ones without drugs inside. The National Police later tweeted: “Life is NOT like a box of chocolates. If you fill them with coke, you know what will happen!”

Tip-off leads to arrest of 13 paedophiles in Murcia-led operation
P
OLICE have arrested 13 child sex abusers in nine different countries, including the UK, Ireland and Spain, and seized more than 200,000 sickening videos and pictures.
Officers said their horrific content included toddlers and babies being violated and an “a la carte” menu of services which could be provided. The network used codes and secret messages to mask their activities and kept detailed logs of the users so they “knew their specific tastes”. All of them were warned never to reveal their passwords. “Some of the scenes showed a high content of sexual violence against the minors,” said a police spokesman. The operation involved forces from 26 countries under the banner of “Plus Ultra 2” and was co-ordinated by Europol. The arrests were made in Spain, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Germany and Serbia. Two of them are said to be producers of child porn videos. They are facing prosecution for the production, possession and distribution of material via the internet showing the sexual abuse of children. The investigation began following a tip-off from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in the United States about a user in Murcia who was distributing files. Police had to search through 551 email addresses and more than 80,000 explicit files before making the arrests. Other countries involved in the major operation includedDenmark, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, Japan, Switzerland, Greece and Sweden.

Pilots concerned about drones near airports after Lufthansa incident
A
N investigation is underway after a Lufthansa passenger jet was forced to take evasive action against three drones before it landed in Bilbao. The near miss was reported by the pilots to the control tower as the plane arrived from Frankfurt. It has been described as the most serious incident involving drones at the airport to date. The trio of potentially lethal drones was spotted at around 900 metres within protected air space when the aircraft had already started its landing procedure. The Airbus 320 had to
make “an evasive manoeuvre” to avoid what experts say could have been a distrastrous collision. The fact that it was a clear sunny day meant the pilots were able to spot the drones and take evasive action. “The pilot saw them almost by accident because at this stage, one of the most critical in the landing process, the crew is usually concerned with the instrumentation,”
said an aviation spokesman. A search has now been launched for the owner or owners of the three drones but an amateur enthusiast is not suspected. Police say that because of the altitude the drones reached over Loui aiport, they were probably a professional brand. Experts say they probably weighed two to three kilos so an impact with a plane coming into land at more than 250 kilometres an hour could have been very serious. Shortly after the pilot made the report, a police helicopter was sent up to look for the
drones but found no trace. It is illegal to fly drones inside the restricted air space surrounding Spanish airports, as well as flying drones higher than an altitude of 120 metres. The Spanish Agency for Aerial Navigation confirmed an investigation is underway amid increasing concerns about the use of drones around airports. The plane, which had capacity for 168 passengers, landed safely. If caught, the owner of the drones could be fined up to 250,000 euros.
Shock as three Spanish sailors robbed at gunpoint in Río
CANARY ATHLETE
T
HREE members of Spain’s Olympic sailing team have told of their shock after being robbed at gunpoint in a popular tourist area of Río de Janeiro, where the Summer Games will start in less than three months. The sailors from the Nacra 17 catamaran class were in
Santa Teresa for training when “they were confronted by five people armed with two pistols,” the Spanish Sailing Federation said in a statement. The trio, including a female athlete from Gran Canaria, were going out for breakfast when the attack happened in this picturesque part of Rio, a firm favourite with foreign visitors. Olympic champion Fernando Echavarri, world and European champion Tara Pacheco and trainer/world champion Santi LopezVazquez were confronted with the gang brandishing two guns. They were ordered to hand over everything they had on
them but although ver y shocked, they were not hurt. “It was a very unpleasant experience,” said Santi Lopez-Vazquez. Canary Islands’ resident, Tara Pacheco said she believed one of the muggers with a gun was only about 14 years of age and they all seemed very agitated and wound-up. “Luckily we are fine but it was a great shock,” she said. “ We told them we would give them everything and not to shoot us.” A spokesman for Rio’s tourism police said a bag with money, documents and a camera were taken in the early morning attack. The Spanish Sailing Federation said the lack of security in Rio was one of its greatest concerns to the teams in the run-up to the Olympics. This had now been proven with the violences suffered by the three team-mates just three months before the Olympics. Further sailing teams from Spain are due to arrive in the area shortly. In a statement, the Federation said: “Fernando, Tara and Santi want to forget as quickly as possible what happened and focus solely on the training they are doing, with great sights on Olympics.” The Civil police in Rio are now trying to identify the authors of the crime and to recover the stolen objects.
EIGHT ARRESTS
Spanish-based gang smuggled 4m euros worth of baby eels
P
OLICE have detected an illegal network of baby eel smugglers which is thought to have netted more than four million euros.
The gang is believed to have hidden elvers measuring just a few centimetres by packing them into suitcases and using human “mules” to get them through customs. The “angulas” are considered a great delicacy across Spain and Asia and have rocketed both in demand and price because of overfishing and changes in the ocean habitat. The transparent wormlike creatures are also known as glass eels. They are considered aphrodisiacs but many top chefs have banned them from their menus amid calls for them to be made an endangered species. Officers think the network
was responsible for smuggling more than 2.5 tons of elvers. Eight people have so far been arrested and aother three investigated. The investigation was centred on Spain after police received a tip-off that a house near Madrid airport was being used for hiding and conserving the live eels. Seizures worth one million euros were later made at a number of Spanish airports and also in Hong Kong. “Gang members were buying the elvers from different parts of Spain and later used false documents to disguise the origin and nature of the product in order to export large quantities to Asian countries,” said a spokesman for the Civil Guard.
SCULPTURE MISSING
Valuable works of art stolen in Rome returned to Spain
V
ALUABLE works of art stolen in a robbery have been returned to Spain following a remarkable find.
The 13 paintings and sculptures by Victorio Macho were stolen in April when they were on their way to Rome for an exhibition. They were owned by the city of Palencia and were to be exhibited at the Cervantes Institute in Rome commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of the painter and sculptor. The pieces were stolen on the night of their arrival by two men using a getaway van. Following a tip-off, Italian police working in collaboration with Spain raided premises on the outskirts of Rome and recovered all 13 items. However, one item is still missing, that of a small sculpture representing the artist himself which could not be found. Spain’s Minister for Education, Culture and Sport expressed “enormous satisfaction” with their recovery.

Barranco de Tenazo: The forgotten land L AST Saturday, Andy Tenerife Walker took me on another beautiful walk above the old village of Fasnia near to Güimar. Yet again, and much to my surprise, this was another walk through local history. This was a short walk, less than 4 km in distance with a steep ascent for about an hour through open countr yside which took us to about 1,000m above sea level. As always at this time of year in the hills and mountains of Tenerife, there are many flowers in bloom especially red poppies and California poppies which line the paths in profusion. It was apparent that there was a good supply of water in the area; we passed one spring and could hear water underground in other parts. Mist clung to the hillside during most of our walk and there was a fleeting drizzle of rain that lasted a few minutes which added a still erriness to the walk and my mood as I thought about the villagers in time gone by trying to eke a living and feed their families from the land.
We passed a vineyard on our way and we had a brief chat with 3 farmers who were spraying the vines and repairing dry stone walls. They seemed quite surprised to see us and quite happy to talk to us and pass the time of day. They told us that some of the trails in the area were being repaired by the local council and as we descended downhill this was quite noticeable. Further on we saw many threshing circles which are areas where they used to thresh cereal crops. Large wooden boards called “trilladoras” were studded with rough stones or pumice and dragged by horses and oxen to separate the wheat from the chaff. There were also many neglected terraces which were once full of crops. Evidence was
all around us of a thriving agricultural past that has long since been abandoned. As always after visiting somewhere new, I did a little research on the history of Fasnia and was not at all surprised to learn that it was rich in Guanche history. In 1762 a large tomb was found in a cave which held more than a 1000 mummies. These mummies were shrouded in goatskins which were neatly sewn and placed
on trestles up to 5 or 6 bodies high. All the men were laid out with their arms outstretched on both thighs whilst the females had their hands folded towards their stomachs. It seems that the whereabouts of these mummies is now a mystery apart from one reference by Viera and Clavijo who stated: “Among the curious objects in the Royal Library in Madrid is the precious body of one of the Guanches that were
removed from the burial cave and some have also gone to adorn the cabinets of the northern kingdoms”. This was confirmed by another writer in the C19 who also added that there was more than one of these mummies in the Cabinet of Natural History in Paris. It
would seem that the cave was ransacked as a whole and that very little has been done to try and locate these remains. This, I think is a great shame, as there are very few Tenerifan Guanche mummies on the island now and therefore a great part of its heritage is missing.

Projects and pipedreams: all the latest from Puerto de la Cruz
W
OW, so much has happened in Puerto since I last wrote. Not actually happened - that would be too much to hope for - but there have been plenty of announcements, the PR machine must have been in overdrive, so many things being ‘bigged up’ and talked about. So much to choose from, where should I start? Ongoing projects, always worthy of comment. The calle Quintana concrete makeover, and with the town in such an upbeat mood at the moment I’ll try to put a positive spin on it. However, the truth appears to be just the opposite, there is very little happening and work seems to have almost ground to a halt. The work was to be completed in four phases, to minimise the disruption, over a ten month period. Yet almost five months in and phase one is far from complete. So, what is the reason for the delay? Well, there is a consensus of opinion that they have run out of concrete slabs and are waiting for more to arrive. Hearsay maybe, but there is not much evidence of slabs being laid nor are there pallets full lying around. Absurd as it sounds, there is a rumour circulating, which I shouldn’t really mention because it can’t possibly be true, that the slabs are coming from a far eastern country which is famous for making just about anything, cheapest, but not always of the best quality. Of course, it’s not true, I know that, but where are the slabs? We live on a lump of rock and the badlands of the south resembles quarries and gravel pits, there is no end of raw materials, they must be able to produce them locally. Enough said, well almost, should the arrival of the slabs be imminent and they work like demons for the next month, unlikely I know, phase one could be completed in six months, multiply by four, the
project could be completed in two years. Sadly that is about par for the course in Puerto. Why do they publicly announce build times, you would have thought they would have learned by now and have they never thought to include a time delay penalty clause when negotiating contracts? They also publicly announced the project budget; do you think that will go the same way?
Car-park extension
Another project, not underway, I hasten to add, but being talked about. There has been a recent announcement of a plan to extend the parking in Plaza de la Constitucion, by adding over 300 spaces, on three levels, by going underground. Not a new project by any stretch of the imagination, this was first bandied about, three years ago, by a previous administration. It was always considered to be a bit of a pipedream when it was first suggested and I suspect that it most probably still is. They couldn’t afford it the first time around, can they now? There is no budget for this project and no time scale. Now, I have a question. Do you think that I could be considered a cynic for suggesting the timely announcement of this, so close to the re-run of the general election, could even remotely be possibly construed as an attempt to influence a voter, who may be wavering, to vote for a particular party, in a sort of, look what we are doing for the town, kind of way? Not that I am suggesting it, I just think aloud some times. I really
should have more faith in my fellow man (or woman), why, do you think, am I always looking for the ulterior motive? Still, work is bound to start on the new bus station soon; I am looking forward to that.
Marketing budget
Another recent announcement, a few weeks ago now, but still worth a mention and good for the town I am sure. We may not have a bus station, a concert sized venue, or a usable municipal swimming pool, but all concerned parties have managed to agree on the marketing budget. At last they seem to be dropping the sun and sand theme and the new buzz words for the town are tradition, culture and gastronomy, each of which covers a broad spectrum and quite appropriate, I have to agree. Now, armed with this new theme, are they going to go boldly forth and explore previously uncharted territories in a bid to open up new markets? No, not at all, they are going to concentrate the majority of their efforts on their existing core countries, namely the UK, Germany and the Spanish mainland. There is nothing like preaching to the converted, but then perhaps these countries host the best trade fairs, there is nothing to beat a good jolly and with a budget of 193,000 euros they are sure to be successful.
Pavement occupancy The council is to review and consider if amendments are needed to existing legislation with concerning business use of the town’s pavements and pedestrian walkways. However, they believe they are already making inroads
to curing the problem of congestion whilst taking into consideration the needs of local businesses. This statement is representative of a recent announcement, although not quite as long winded. It is a fine example of an announcement for announcement sake and one guilty of not really saying anything. As for thinking the problem is well on the way to being solved, they must walk around with blinkers on, either that or their gafas de sol are rose tinted. Let me paint you a picture, a walk I have done many times. As you walk into Plaza de Charco , you need to have your wits about you, have your eyes searching ahead to spot the best route to take to navigate the restaurant tables, being ever mindful that at any second a waiter can appear on a collision course laden down with plates of food or drinks. Halfway through you reach a bottleneck, where a particular restaurant seems to be unsure of its boundary so much so that its tables are forever encroaching, making further inroads into available space as their evening gets busier. Having negotiated this bottleneck or taken a diversion, often quicker, you
arrive at the next obstacle, namely handbags tastefully arranged on old bed sheets, which come with the offer of the best price guaranteed. If you get through these without tripping over there is some respite, apart from the local drug and or alcohol abusers who seem to take up almost permanent residence in the square, but they are another stor y for another time. However, I will just say they seem to be very popular; people are always approaching them, shaking their hands briefly and then disappearing again. Surely, this is a worst case scenario? Maybe, but it does happen and why is it so difficult to control, all it needs is a bit of effective policing. I am not against businesses out to make a profit, but am against those operating outside the law, at the expense of others. What is wrong with restaurants and bars having a clearly defined area for which they pay the necessary dues and display a permit stating the number of tables permitted? It sounds easy doesn’t it, of course, because it is? Shop owners who feel there is a need to display their goods on the pavements should be treated exactly the
same way. There seems to have been a leniency towards the street vendors in recent years and as a result their number has increased. I can see no reason why these can’t be treated in a similar manner ; if they are legally resident then they should be given the option to trade in a designated area. Likewise I would apply the same rules to the flower sellers, street performers, musicians, living statues and artists. I you are trading on the street, be legal and have a permit.
Blue flag Finally, Puerto has once again gained blue flag status for its beaches, both at San Telmo and at Playa Jardin. I am pleased for the town, especially as it is the fourth consecutive year for both, but I am once again surprised by Playa Jardin, especially the Punta Brava end. When the wind is in the wrong direction, given the close proximity to the sewage treatment plant and I can’t see how they pass the clean water standards. However, I haven’t changed my opinion of the town’s beaches; I just have lower expectations of the blue flag award

Fines and road sanctions in Spain
T
HERE are many laws and rules that have implications for either fines or sanctions and in this issue we are going to cover some of them.
Some of the issues concern things that are very obvious such as using a mobile phone whilst driving and using radar detector devices.
Using a mobile phone either normally or on speaker phone is illegal as it causes the driver to be distracted from other vehicles around them and potential road hazards , i.e. lane closures, accidents, pedestrians etc. to name but a few. The in-ear devices, although previously permitted are no longer legal and the only legal method to use a mobile phone is by the use of blue tooth connection, which is the method used by police and which is built into their helmets. This offence carries a 200 euro fine and the loss of 3 points from your licence. The best thing to do is to ignore your phone while driving, set it to silent or turn it off and return any calls when you stop. This type of distraction is one of the major causes for road traffic collisions as even a second’s distraction whilst driving can be fatal. The use of Radar Detectors, although not a common occurrence in our experience here in Tenerife will result in a fine of 6000 euros, and a loss of six points from your licence. This fine does not have any discount available as most others do if paid within the specific time limit, so beware if you have one, it could be a very costly experience. Some of the newer GPS devices have information which shows the drivers where fixed cameras are located and as this information is provided directly and freely from the DGT its intention is to encourage drivers to slow down. This information shown on such devices IS permitted and does not incur any fine or sanction. The fine for the improper use of a radar detector is 200 euros and again a loss of three points. As with the use of mobile phones the aim is to reduce accidents and subsequent casualties.
I
had the chance to sample two Suzuki models in two countries in the same week last month – one already on our roads and the other just going on sale in the UK this month. There wasn’t too much travelling involved though as I was testing the Vitara in Scotland before making the short hop over to Northern Ireland where we were getting our first drive in the new Baleno. Heading out of Belfast, some winding coastal roads were ideal to discover how the latest arrival would perform. And this all-new hatchback didn’t disappoint with some fun driving along the route. The Baleno comes in SZ-T and SZ5 trims – starting from just £12,999 for the SZ-T that comes with a super new 1.0litre three cylinder Boosterjet petrol engine. Suzuki doesn’t scrimp when it comes to standard equipment and highlights on top of the usual offerings that you don’t normally get on entry-models include satellite navigation, Bluetooth and air conditioning.
Step up to the SZ5 – just £1,000 dearer – and additional items include LED rear lights, radar brake support and adaptive cruise control. I sampled an SZ5 model with the super little 110bhp Boosterjet engine and it proved to be responsive when required. It has a claimed combined economy figure of 62.7mpg and my driving partner and I achieved 58mpg – pretty impressive considering we were pushing the revs up as we went through the gears and not being too light on the accelerator pedal. The Baleno also marks Suzuki’s first attempt at hybrid technology. This is just a mild hybrid system four-cylinder 1.2 SHVS engine in SZ5 trim and costs £13,929. It’s not as punchy as the Boosterjet but was still quite nippy and is even more frugal with a combined fuel eco-
nomy figure of 70.6mpg. Both models displayed agile handling with good tarmac grip. They were never too noisy going up and down a slick five-speed manual gearbox and ride comfort was good. Baleno is a great looking supermini and I liked the driving position and frontpassenger’s seat comfort in a smart, bright, roomy interior. It has adequate rear legroom for adults and the boot – with its hidden compartment – has a capacity of 320 litres, increasing to 756 litres with rear seats folded. Suzuki has targeted 3,500 UK sales in the model’s first year and it looks well capable of achieving this. The Japanese company has been enjoying rising sales, including its most successful Februar y and April in the UK. And playing a big part in the sales zoom is its super Vitara. This compact five-door SUV arrived in the UK in April, 2015, and I was full of praise
There are fines for failing to carry the correct Emergency equipment. Currently a fine will be incurred if you are not carrying the mandatory two warning triangles, a reflective jacket for each occupant of the vehicle, a spare wheel along with the necessary tools to change this or a puncture repair kit. It is no longer mandatory for you to carry a spare set of bulbs or a spare set of spectacles, if you wear them; however it is advised to do so for your own safety on the latter item. The fine for the above is 80 euros but there is no point’s loss. Insecure animals in vehicles. Most responsible and loving animal owners would never dream of taking their pets in the car unless they were secure and safe. Many people drive with animals on their laps or unsecured in the back or front of the vehicle, not only is this dangerous for the animal but could also interfere with your driving. The same applies to animals in cages and boxes which must be safely secured. The fine for failing to do this is 80 euros although no loss of points would apply. Worst of all, as most know animals can be unpredictable, get excited or even nervous and if loose could interfere with the driver’s ability or visibility in the event of a crash, which in turn could cause suffering for the animal or even death. It is always better to be safe rather than sorry and out of pocket! for it in a News review last year. And the new Vitara S addition to the range was waiting for me on my return from Belfast. This was the first Suzuki to utilise the new Boosterjet petrol turbo engine and in this model is a four-cylinder 138bp 1.4-litre unit. The Vitara is one of the best SUVs when it comes to road performance and the sporting S model handled superbly – boosted by its ALLGRIP four-wheel drive
system. It accelerates from standstill to 62mph in 10.2 seconds and delivered power instantly, through a super six-speed manual gearbox. This model stands out from the others with unique S model trim which includes gloss black 17-inch alloys, rear upper spoiler, satin silver door/mirrors and red interior stitching. The £20,899 price tag on the S brings a whole lot of standard features that
include rear parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, tilt and telescopic adjustable leather covered steering wheel, air conditioning, LED projector headlamps and daytime running lights, satellite navigation and Bluetooth. Suzuki has improved the build quality and style of its cars massively over the years and these two highlyattractive looking models are prime examples of the stride forward.

CARE ADVICE
Gerbils, a fascinating pet, clean, sociable but rapid breeders! for nesting. Don’t use fluffy material as this can wrap around gerbils’ limbs and injure them. Gerbils also like a nest box – but not made of wood or plastic, which they’ll chew. A clay flowerpot cut in half makes a good sleeping area. A dust bath of chinchilla sand (available from most pet shops) should be provided so the gerbil can keep its coat clean and in good condition.
WHAT FOOD DO GERBILS LIKE? Most gerbil owners like to feed commercial mixes as the basis of their pets’ diet but they should also be given fresh vegetables and fruit. Earthenware or stainless steel feed bowls should be used. Don’t worry about them burying their feed bowl under their bedding, as it’s natural for them to store and hoard food. Gerbils enjoy apples, carrots, broccoli, sprouts and cauliflower. Lettuce can be given occasionally but only in very small amounts. Don’t feed potatoes, rhubarb or tomato leaves as these are poisonous. Also ensure your gerbils have a constant supply of fresh water. This should be provided in a free-access water bottle fixed inside the tank because water bowls will be tipped over and buried.
KEEPING YOU GERBIL HEALTHY A healthy gerbil has bright eyes, a glossy coat and is alert and lively – except in the daytime when sleepy. A runny or sticky nose or eyes, dull coat and/or lethargy are signs of ill health and need veterinary advice. Like other rodents, gerbils have upper incisor teeth that continue to grow throughout their lives.
G
ERBILS are fascinating pets and will fit in well with most families. They are inquisitive, rarely bite and are found in many colours.
There are about 90 species but the Mongolian gerbil is the one kept as a pet. They are sometimes mistaken for mice or rats but they actually look and behave differently. Gerbils have long, hairy tails and, as you’ll find out, are serious diggers! Because gerbils originate from desert and dry grassland areas, they do not produce much urine and waste, so it’s fairly easy to keep their environment clean and free from smells. They are very sociable and should not be kept alone. However, they breed from three months old and can produce a litter of four to ten babies every 24 days, so it’s best to keep pairs or small groups of the same sex. Only buy gerbils from a knowledgeable breeder or good pet shop where the assistants know how to care for them and are able to handle the gerbils confidently. They should be in clean accommodation of ample size with food and fresh water available. Cages should also have beds and bedding. Babies should not be sold until they are at least five to six weeks old. Males become sexually mature at 70 to 80 days old and females at 86 to 109 days. Females can become pregnant again within 24 hours of giving birth, so it’s important that males and females are
kept separate in pet shops. The staff in the shop should be able to show you how to tell the difference between males and females. If staff aren’t sure, you may end up with a pregnant gerbil.
GERBIL CAGES AND LIVING SPACES
In the wild, gerbils live in underground tunnels up to 3m long with several entries and chambers. The best way to mimic this natural habitat and keep them happy is to house them in a large tank or old aquarium with a secure wire lid and plenty of material for them to dig and tunnel into. Wire cages are unsuitable because the bedding will be kicked out. You can also get gerbilariums or tanks with cage additions which are ideal for this type of pet. Two gerbils need a minimum floor surface of 40cm x 75cm, by at least 30cm tall because they are such good jumpers. Keep the tank or aquarium away from draughts and direct sunlight or heat. As these little animals are active during the evening – and occasionally during the day – you may not want to keep their tank in a bedroom. You are not likely to disturb them, but they may disturb you! Gerbils need a thick layer of dust- extracted bedding to dig into. Organic soil or peat are great natural beddings for your gerbil along with meadow or Timothy hay, plus shredded paper
They keep them at the right length by gnawing on things, so provide a small branch from a fruit tree, such as apple (check it has not been sprayed with pesticides) or wooden chew toys available from pet shops.
EXERCISING AND ENTERTAINING YOUR GERBIL Gerbils love to dig and burrow, so make sure they have enough bedding to do this to their hearts’ content. They have enormous fun with cardboard tubes, like toilet roll tubes, and will run through them and chew them. They also like fruit tree branches to climb on and, if you put a flat rock in the tank, they may use it as a lookout point.
INTRODUCING GERBILS Gerbils naturally live in a group, so it’s not fair to keep one on its own. If you buy two or more baby gerbils of the same sex – from the same litter or harmonious group – they should get on well. However, adult gerbils (ie over ten weeks old) can be aggressive towards any newcomers to the group. Females are often more aggressive than males. If you have to introduce an older gerbil, split the tank with a wire frame so they can see and smell but not injure each other and swap sides so that the tank picks up the scent of both gerbils. After three or four days they should settle together without a barrier, but it’s important to keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t fight and injure one another.
HANDLING YOUR GERBIL
Gerbils are usually friendly and happy to be handled although some can be timid. Start by placing your hand in the tank so the gerbils can sniff and get used to you, then gently stroke them. Pick up a gerbil by placing your hand around its body, just behind the forelegs, and support the hindquarters in your other hand. Never handle a gerbil by the end of its tail as it can easily be injured. Children should only handle gerbils under adult supervision in case they accidentally squeeze too hard.
GERBILS AS CHILDREN’S PETS Gerbils are quick and agile and young children could find it quite difficult to hold them without squeezing too hard. If you have young children and want them to be able to handle their pet, it may be better to choose a different species. For older children, gerbils can make entertaining pets but it’s important that an adult is responsible for, and interested in, overseeing their care and well-being.
UK ‘Brexit’ referendum on EU membership: latest indicators
The latest polls, betting odds, and pound-euro exchange rate suggesting which way the vote might go in the UK’s referendum on EU membership on the 23rd June.
LATEST OPINION POLLS For the last week or so the polls have given the remain camp a clear lead of 55% compared to 37%-40% for leave. However the latest YouGov poll on the 17th May narrowed the lead to 44% for remain and 40% leave, with a higher don’t know of 15%. Overall it was a good week for the remain camp in terms of opinion polls.
LATEST BETTING ODDS The latest betting odds from Betfair show the remain camp gaining ground as the odds-on favourite falling from 1.33 to 1.22, compared to an increase from 3.25 to 4.00 for a Brexit vote. So the bookies think a remain vote is highly likely, and getting more so
LATEST CELEBRITY ENDORSEMENTS

UDE Law, Keira Knightley and Benedict Cumberbatch are among stars who have signed a letter saying Brexit would “damage” the creative industry, reports the BBC. Among others backing the letter are actors Bill Nighy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sir John Hurt, Sir Patrick Stewart and Thandie Newton, architect Richard Rogers, artist Tracey Emin, author John le Carre, comedian Jo Brand, fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, director Richard Curtis and writer Philip Pullman. Canadian PM Justin Trudeau has entered the debate saying “Britain is always going to have clout, it’s just obviously amplified by its strength as part of the EU. I believe we’re always better when we work as closely as possible together and separatism, or division, doesn’t seem to be a productive path for countries.” (BBC)
LATEST EUR/GBP EXCHANGE RATE The pound had a very good week against the euro, mainly on the strength of the opinion polls showing stronger support for a remain vote. So the money markets see a remain vote as more likely.
The former president of the European Central Bank, JeanClaude Trichet, has defended Bank of England Governor Mark Carney’s intervention in the debate last week, when he warned that a vote to leave could cause a recession. (BBC) Lord Lamont, a former chancellor, has described “this daily avalanche of institutional propaganda” as “ludicrous and pitiful”. (BBC)

La Orotava celebrates its “big week” Bargains galore at Adeje opportunity of activities with an invitation to all
O
NE of the biggest fiestas celebrated in La Orotava has swung into action with more than 100 activities.
The big week started on May 29th and continues until June 5th so there is still plenty to come, including one of the most popular romerias in the Canar y Islands and of course the flower and sand carpets. Details were presented
during a ceremony in the town hall where the official poster, by young designer Eduardo Rodríguez, was unveiled. The Mayor, Francisco Linares was joined by the councillor for fiestas, Delia Escobar and the priest-pastor
Mamma Mia set for the Canaries
T
HE Teatro Pérez Galdós in Las Palmas is to host the hugely successful musical “Mamma Mia!” between January 6th and 22nd, 2017.
The production comes to the Canaries following its remarkable success on a Spanish tour and around the world. The curtain first opened on Mamma Mia in 1999 in London and amazed theatre-goers clammered for tickets. The same happened when it premiered in Spain in 2004 in Madrid. No one imagined the musical would run continuously for seven seasons and get a total of two million people up and dancing in the aisles. Actress and singer Nina will lead a superb new cast of 30 with all the fantastic songs of Abba. Tickets are already on sale through the usual channels, including www.auditorioteatrolaspalmasgc.es
Oscar Guerra. Councillor for public safety, Narciso Pérez also spoke about security arrangements which will feature a 200-strong team. The bigger acts will all have specific protection plans. The gala queens have already been chosen and the reading of the proclamation was on May 30th. On June 1st, the plaza del V Centenario will be hosting one of the most important events in the Canary Islands in the wine world with the presentation of the 2015 wine harvest from La Orotava valley. All the local wineries will be represented and about 10,000 people are expected. On the same day, there will be a concert in the Auditorio Teobaldo Power from the municipality music group. The “Day of the Carpet” (Día de las Alfombras) is always a highlight and this year it is on Thursday, June 2nd, starting with the peal of bells at 7am and church service. Thousands of people will
join in the creation of the flower carpets in the streets whilst the grand tapestry of sand from Mount Teide is unveiled in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento after a month of work. There will be a church service at 6.30pm, followed by the grand procession. Celebrations continue into the weekend with the traditional folklore dance on June 3rd, the cattle fair on June 4th and the closing event, the romeria in honour of the patron saints on Sunday, June 5th. The Mayor thanked the multitude of people and organisations for their selfless work and extended an invitation for everyone to come to La Orotava and join in the celebrations. Last year, around 150,000 people visited the municipality over the week. To find out more, see www.villadelaorotava.es

DISCOUNTED STOCK
HE ninth Adeje “Feria del Saldo” will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 11th and 12th.
It is being held by the local council in association with Mercadillo del Atlántico S.A. and companies wishing to take a stand can apply up until June 6th. The idea is to give small and medium enterprises in the municipality the chance to offer products at discounted prices and help their reduction of stock. Those wishing to take part should ring 922 756 249, extension 7512 and
7573. The Fair will host fashion products, electronics, home items, etc., as well as food stalls. Both days will be held from 10am through to 10pm in the parking area of the School of Music and Dance in Adeje. There will also be children’s activities with bouncy castles, exhibitions, music, gymnastics, zumba, dance therapy, gastronomic products, a fitness class and raffles.
JEWELLERY TOO
Tenerife artist stages “Contemplation” exhibition A new exhibition in Guía de Isora is mixing paintings with jewellery.
“Contemplation” showcases the creations of Tenerife artist, Isaac Correa and includes about 20 works of small to medium size, predominantly in acrylic on canvas and mixed media. In addition, visitors can see a small collection of jewellery from a previous exhibition which add colour and
atmosphere. Isaac Correa was born in 1979 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and studied Fine Arts before beginning a varied artistic path, always marked by introspection. In 2014, he took part in the exhibition “20 artists for Guia de Isora” and staged a montage in the eighth edition
of La Pascua Florida, the unique floral art show in Spain to celebrate Easter in the municipality.
The exhibition can be visited Monday to Friday 9am to 2pm and 4pm to 9pm in the cultural centre until June 30th.

HIS stunning poster will be the “face” of the 2017 Santa Cruz Carnival, the dates of which have been announced as between February 1st and March 5th. The work is by 82-year-old award-winning artist Pepe Dámaso and has a story of its own to tell. The images reflect the theme of the “Caribbean” which promises to turn the streets of the capital into a sea of colour. Though not what you might expect to portray this, the poster mixes Canarian elements, such as Mount Teide, with the flavour of the Caribbean and a skull inspired by the artist’s own brush with death. At the official presentation, he explained that creating the poster had given him a new lease of life following serious health problems he had been suffering. “During my convalescence I saw a light and that light was the centre of this poster,” he said. The work is in mixed media
and will be seen across the city as preparations are made for the carnival which attracts hundreds of thousands of people and is second only in size to that of Rio. The Mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez thanked the artist for the poster and said: “From tonight, it will represent the best Carnival in the world in all the offices of Spanish tourism and major European capitals.” He said Pepe Dámaso was “a Canary artist of universal dimension”, an adoptive son of Santa Cruz and winner of the Canary Islands’ Fine Art Award. He has exhibited all over the world, including in New York, Paris, Porto, Copenhagen, Cuba, Belgrade. “Art is subject to the judgment of the public but I have to thank Pepe for the passion and heart he put into this work,” he added.

Your dining experience around our restaurants A SPECIAL PLACE
Flambe, flair and great food makes the Oyster Catcher a firm favourite
Y
OU don’t have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces; just good food from fresh ingredients” is the ethos of the Oyster Catcher in Los Cristianos. True but you also need to throw in other important elements. Good service, “ lovely surroundings, an extensive choice, plentiful portions and value for money, as well as a great team at the helm. Fortunately, this lovely venue on the thriving El Mirador strip has it all and deserves to be one of the most popular restaurants in Los Cristianos. It has been in the hands of owner Angel for over 20 months now and all involved have worked very hard to make it a success. In fact, it’s an ongoing campaign. They don’t believe in sitting back on their laurels and like to listen to their customers, adding new suggestions to the menu and offering different specials on a regular basis. The Oyster Catcher has something else to single itself out - the speciality of flambe. Enjoying our recent review night, it was amazing to see how many people stopped in the doorway to watch either Angel or the chef take to the flambe trolley, with the flames really catching the eye.
The end product not only looks good in the making, it tastes delicious too and it’s quite surprising what you can flambe over and above steaks. Chicken breast, stroganoff, pork fillet, king prawns, even lemon sole meuniere, not to mention the desserts which you won’t want to miss, especially if you love crepe suzette! We were well looked after by manageress, Charmaine and though it was a ver y pleasant evening, we opted to sit inside the restaurant which takes on a warm glow with its rich red decor. You do, however, have the best of both worlds. The Oyster Catcher has a large covered terrace for al fresco dining. The menu is very extensive and where appropriate, all the main courses are served with a choice of fresh vegetables and potatoes. This is certainly a boost for costs because extras like this can bump up the bill elsewhere before you realise it. We perused the evening menu which offers an enormous choice of salads, pasta, fish dishes, roasts,
steaks and the house flambes. Initially, we weren’t going to have a starter but I couldn’t resist the shrimp cocktail salad which was absolutely gorgeous and a meal in itself. My husband opted for a lovely bowl of leek and potato soup. New additions to the starters include garlic prawns and garlic mushrooms, both by popular demand. Obviously, we wanted to watch the flambe in process so I decided to have the stroganoff (16.50 euros) which featured tender pieces of beef fillet steak, onion, mushrooms, brandy, mustard and pickles finished with cream and chopped parsley. It was delicious. My dining partner loved his fillet steak (18.50 euros) in a green pepper sauce with brandy and cream. Both came with the choice
of potatoes and a big dish of fresh vegetables, over and above what was already on the plate, which together made for a very large portion. The menu is so extensive that it suits all pockets as well as tastes. A lasagne bolognaise, for instance, is 7.20 euros while the roast leg of lamb is 9.20 euros, breast of chicken in curry sauce with rice at 10.50 euros and grilled salmon 11.50 euros. Or try the fish and chips for 12.50 euros or the prime steak and ale pie at 10.50 euros. Specials of the day were sea bass and chicken skewers and the choices change ever y couple of days. This is probably why so many people return many times during their holiday or, of course, if they live here permanently. You could eat
something different ever y night for weeks. Although the restaurant says “you don’t have to cook fancy ”, that doesn’t mean the cuisine is plain. All the dishes are well presented with flair and extra touches and ingredients, with some lovely sauces and good flavouring. One dish for a future visit is the gorgeous sounding perch and cava, for instance, or perhaps the paella valenciana. The restaurant offers home-made desserts, over and above the flambes with fruit, so do try the mouthwatering cheesecake (6.50 euros) or the tiramisu at six euros, that’s if you can resist the toffee lumpy bumpy! The Oyster Catcher is highly recommended for a night out or at any time of the day, for breakfast, a
snack lunch. The team will cater for all needs and the menu contains advice on allergens and gluten. If you would like your dish cooked in any particular way, do ask. Angel and his staff speak English so it’s a popular haunt with the British but also for all nationalities. He has spent a lifetime in the restaurant trade, including in the UK and is very proud of his reputation. You will find the Oyster Catcher at CC El Mirador, Local 5, Avenida San Francisco, Los Cristianos, telephone 922 788 038 if you prefer to make a booking or for a party or special celebration. It’s open every day and is in walking distance from most parts of Los Cristianos or via the buses or taxis or with your own car. There is always parking outside or nearby.

Psychological symptoms can include feeling down, anxiety, irritability, mood swings, tiredness and lack of energy. However, this time in a woman’s life can also be stressful due to parents’ ageing and loss of independence, death of parents or relatives, divorce or ‘empty nest syndrome’ when children leave home. Therefore, it can be difficult to tell if your psychological symptoms are a direct result of the menopause. To help improve your mood, get plenty of rest, regular exercise and relaxation exercises such as yoga.
Sleep well Restful sleep will help you cope with night sweats and other menopausal symptoms. Improve your sleep by avoiding exercise within two hours of bedtime and going to bed at the same time every night
Get some exercise There’s evidence that women who are more active tend to suffer less from the symptoms of the menopause. Exercise is important not only for the relief of short-term symptoms but also to protect your body from heart disease and osteoporosis. Exercise will help keep your bones and the muscles that support them strong. It will also increase your flexibility and mobility, which will in turn improve your balance. The benefits of exercise in preventing bone loss and fractures are well known. It is thought that the best kind of activities are aerobic, sustained and regular. Brisk walking about three times a week is a cheap, easy and great way to start exercising.
Stop smoking Women who smoke have an earlier menopause than non-smokers, have worse flushes and often don’t respond as well to tablet forms of HRT. It’s never too late to stop smoking.
person with flat feet has low arches or no arches at all. The arch, or instep, is the inside part of the foot that is usually raised off the ground when you stand, while the rest of the foot remains flat on the ground. It is also known as fallen arches. Most people have a noticeable space on the inner part of their foot (the arch). The height of the arch varies from person to person.
How can I tell if I have flat feet?
Flat feet are easy to identify while standing or walking. When someone with flat feet stands, their inner foot or arch flattens, and the foot may roll over to the inner side (known as over-pronation). To see whether your foot over-pronates, stand on tiptoe or push your big toe back as far as possible. If the arch of your foot appears, it means that your foot is flexible and normal. If the arch does not appear, your foot is likely to over-pronate when you walk or run. It can be difficult to tell if a child has flat feet as the arches may not fully develop until the age of 10.
Symptoms Flat feet do not usually cause problems, but they can put a strain on your muscles and ligaments (the tissue that links two bones together at a joint). This may cause pain in your legs when you walk. If you have flat feet you may experience pain in the inside of your ankle, arch of your foot, the outerside of your foot, calf (the back of your lower leg) and/or knee, hip or back. Some people with flat feet find that their weight is distributed unevenly, particularly if their foot over-
pronates. If your foot overpronates, it is likely that your shoes will wear out quickly. Over-pronation can also damage your ankle joint and Achilles tendon (the large tendon at the back of your ankle).
Why do I have flat feet?
Having low or no arches is normal for some people. In these cases, flat feet is usually inherited and the feet are fairly flexible. Occasionally, flat feet can be caused by an abnormality that develops in the womb, such as a problem with a joint, or where two or more bones are fused together. This is also known as tarsal coalition and leads to the feet being flat and stiff. Flat feet that develops in later life can be the result of a condition that affects the joints, such as arthritis, or an injury to a muscle, tendon or the joints of the foot. Conditions that affect the nervous system (brain and spinal cord) can also cause the arches to fall. This is because over time, the muscles gradually become stiffer and weaker and lose their flexibility. Conditions where this occurs include cerebral palsy, spina bifida and muscular dystrophy. Adult-acquired flat feet often affects women who are over 40 years of age. It often goes undiagnosed and develops when the tendon that supports the foot arch gradually stretches over time.
It is not fully understood what causes the tendon to become stretched, but some experts believe that wearing high heels and standing or walking for long periods may play a part. You are more at risk if you are obese, have high blood pressure (hypertension) or diabetes. Recent research has found a link with changes to this tendon and an increase in a type of protein called protelytic enzyme. These enzymes can break down some areas of the tendon, weakening it and causing the foot arch to fall. Similar changes were also seen in other conditions, such as Achilles tendonitis. This could have important implications for treating flat feet, as medication that specifically targets these enzymes could provide an alternative to surgery. However, further research is needed and this type of treatment is thought to be about 10-15 years away.
When to see your GP Most cases of flat feet do not cause any problems. However, you should go to see your GP if you or your child have flat feet and they are causing pain, even when wearing supportive shoes that fit well, shoes wear out very quickly, your feet appear to be getting flatter and your or your child’s feet are weak, numb or stiff. Your GP may refer you to a podiatrist (foot specialist).
Treatment Treatment is not usually needed for flat feet because they do not usually cause any significant problems. If your feet ache, the achiness can usually be relieved by wearing supportive shoes that fit properly. You may need to wear shoes that are wider than normal. If your feet over-pronate, you may need to wear a special insole (orthotic device) inside your shoes to stop your feet rolling inwards when you walk or run. These will usually need to be made and fitted by a podiatrist. In rare cases, surgery may be needed where a child has flat feet due to a problem they are born with (a congenital abnormality). The foot may need to be straightened, or the bones may need to be separated if they are fused together. Painkillers and insoles are the first treatment options for flat feet that are caused by a joint problem, such as arthritis, or a torn tendon. If the injury or condition is severely affecting your feet, surgery may be recommended. In cases where flat feet are the result of a condition that affects the nervous system, special shoes, insoles, or supportive foot or leg braces may be needed. Again, in severe cases, an operation may be required to straighten your feet.

Indoor allergies and what causes them
A
N indoor allergy is when something in your home or work environment triggers an allergic reaction that causes the lining of your nose to become inflamed. This can cause cold-like symptoms such as sneezing, a runny nose and nasal congestion. The symptoms of an indoor allergy can range from mild to severe. While it doesn’t pose a serious threat to your health, it can have a considerable impact on your quality of life. It can affect sleep, daily activities and performance at work or school. An indoor allergy is also known as perennial allergic rhinitis. The symptoms can occur all year round, unlike the seasonal types of allergic rhinitis, such as hay fever, which is caused by an allergic reaction to certain types of pollen. However, some allergens inside the home can trigger the symptoms of hay fever as well as other conditions such as eczema and asthma. In some cases an indoor allergy can contribute to sinusitis, a condition where the sinuses become inflamed or infected.
What causes an indoor allergy?
Anything that causes an allergic reaction is known as an allergen. The most common triggers of indoor allergies are dust mites, fungus spores, pets, in

particular the dead skin that is shed by pets (known as animal dander) and/or substances related to particular occupations or workplaces, such as wood dust and chemicals
Treating indoor allergies Medication to help manage the symptoms of an indoor allergy is available over the counter at pharmacies or on prescription. This includes nasal decongestants, antihistamines and corticosteroids. In some cases, the symptoms of an indoor allergy can be reduced by using a treatment called immunotherapy. This involves exposing the affected person to small amounts of whatever they are allergic to over time so that their body builds up a tolerance to the allergen. However, immunotherapy is time-consuming, taking three to five years to complete. It’s also not suitable for everyone. The best way to prevent indoor allergies is to avoid whatever is causing the allergic reaction. However, this is not always possible and extra steps might be needed, such as replacing carpets with hard wood flooring, minimising contact with pets and regularly checking for signs of fungal mould.

T
HE Tenerife orthdontist Víctor Cubillo Blasco, co-inventor of the prosthetic solution ArtOn 4® has been invited by the British Academy of Restorative Dentistry (BARD) to present the properties of this revolutionary system before more than 100 elite dentists. The presentation takes place during the BARD Conference 2016, one of the highlights of dentistr y in Europe, and is held annually in the UK. This year, the event was being held on June 3rd and 4th in a unique location in the city of Birmingham at the Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel. Arton 4® is a prosthetic solution that is applied in immediate loading surgery, commonly performed when teeth have suffered considerable damage and need to be replaced for functional and
aesthetic reasons, either the top or bottom. Such replacement is the prosthesis, which is “loaded” on the implants during the hours after surgery in which they are placed, hence its “immediacy”. The novelty which Arton 4® introduced is that it includes a final prosthesis. In general, the immediate load requires first a temporary prosthesis for at least six months, so that the implants are adapted and integrated into the bone supporting the teeth. However,
with 4® Arton that wait is not required. On the same day of the operation, the patient goes home with the final prosthesis thanks to the materials used in its composition and the structure of Arton 4®. This represents a major advantage from the viewpoint of the patient, both in cost, and inconvenience and dental visits; and a revolution in dentistry, as it minimises production costs without risking the aesthetics or functionality. Sr. Cubillo, also medical director of the clinic Artedental in Puerto de la Cruz, intends to make a practical demonstration of ArtOn 4® with a surgical procedure the day before his presentation via streaming
and complete the placement of the prosthesis to the patient directly in front of all attendee, thanks to the participation of the prosthetic director of Artedental and co-inventor of ArtOn 4®, Volker Samrei. Precisely with the act of placing will begin the theoretical exposition of Cubillo about Arton 4®: “A Paradigm Shift in Definitive Prosthetic Solutions”. The ArtOn 4®solution, patented, was created by various members of the Artedental team which has been carrying out research in the Canaries for years and formed the company Arton Systems ™. Several dentists and dental technicians of national and international prestige have visited this Puerto clinic in recent months with the aim of forming and implementing this system in their clinics, one of the reasons which led to the interest of an organisation so prominent as the BARD institution.

Arona to hold Puerto pledges financial fund to help “displaced” swimming clubs basketball camp POOL CLOSURE
P
UERTO de la Cruz council has pledged to do all it can to help swimming clubs displaced during planned reforms of the municipal
pool.
An urgent meeting has been held between local officials, the Canary Swimming Federation and Tenerife Cabildo with a view to setting up a fund to help cover expenses to travel to a different venue.
This would directly help Puerto clubs unable to use the swimming pool until refurbishment and repairs are concluded and it is subsequently reopened. This meeting was the last in a series which have taken

The Aguere centre was represented at the meeting by a dozen competitors. They came away with one silver and six bronzes. The tournament attracted around 2,000 participants, with 18 Canary teams. The silver was won by Raúl Martín whilst Nerea Martín, Juan A. Rodríguez, Alejandro Díaz, Laura Ramos, Guarirai Tomé and Miguel A. Blásquez came away with bronze medals.
place to discuss the matter and to draft the project which will turn the old municipal pool into a modern centre. Those attending included the councillor for sport, Javier González; the Cabildo’s insular director for coordination of projects, Ofelia Manjón and insular councillor for sports administration, Cristo Pérez. The breakage of various pipes and vessels in December 2015 led to serious damage in the engine room and subsequent flooding. Since then, Puerto council has been working on the plan to set up a help fund for those swimming clubs displaced because of the closure. The fund would offset the cost of travel to
other municipalities to use their pools as a temporary training site. Javier González said they were well aware of the problems the situation had caused clubs and wanted to guarantee the availability of this long-awaited aid. It was also stressed that the council had “not stopped working” on the modernisation plan and hoped the project would go out to tender in early 2017. They were pressing for urgent action without delays but stressed there were many requirements and regulations to comply with. “We are convinced that it is this is the best possible solution to enjoy decent facilities in Puerto de la Cruz and therefore in north Tenerife,” said Javier González.

GUIDE
During WWII and the postwar years, the number of babies born to unmarried mothers increased. Rob Skinner was one such baby and was given up for adoption soon after his birth. But it was only as a young adult that Rob found out he was adopted and that he had two siblings, twins Martin and Sue. Rob meets up with them for the first time in over a year and reveals some surprising news about his biological father. Sisters Sue and Eileen spent 50 years apart and led completely different lives. Both went to live in a baby home when their mum became unable to cope. Eileen then left to live with her biological dad, and Sue was subsequently adopted by the parents of one of the young nurses, Dilys, who worked at the baby home. Years later, when Sue’s adoptive mum and dad died, she started to do some digging and finally tracked down her half-sister Eileen. Now the newly united sisters are meeting up with Dilys, the only person who remembers Eileen as a baby.

Charlie Luxton travels to Puglia, the breadbasket of Italy, where olives, bread, pasta and wine are in abundance. In Polignano a Mare, he visits a townhouse perched precariously over sea caverns. In Alberbello, he takes in a rural building with a conical roof. There’s a contemporary home in Cisternino that’s spread out and split over 3700 square feet and three separate buildings. There’s also a renovated farm cottage and a posh farmhouse in Fassano. And finally, in the seaside town of Bisceglie, Charlie visits a low-energy, sustainable Passivhaus. 18:25 18:35 22:15
