“DREAM COME TRUE” A
“
as work starts on 23.6m euro Tenerife motor circuit
dream come true” is how the multi-million euro project to bring a motor-racing circuit to Tenerife was described as the first cornerstone was laid on Monday. President of the island’s Cabildo, Carlos Alonso said they had fought very hard for the ultra-modern infrastructure in Granadilla de Abona and it was now becoming a reality. The project involves a private investment of 23.6 million euros, approximately 21.2 of which will go to the construction of the circuit, while 2.4 will be used for carrying out the northern access. Its design complies with the current requirements of national and international car and motorcycling federations in order to organise competitions at the highest level. For the biggest events, the extensive facilities will have
capacity for up to 10,000 people, placing Tenerife firmly on the international motor racing map. The island’s massive popularity and advantages was seen as an obvious choice for the location of such a circuit. The works are executed by the company Axia S.R.L., while Onda Rossa S.L. will be responsible for managing the facility for a period of 35 years, renewable for another five years. The deadline of the work of the circuit is 21 months, while for the northern access, it will be 12 months. Carlos Alonso said that “behind this project is a dream of motorsports fans. Without the teams and fans of the
engine, the circuit would be impossible. But neither would it have gone ahead without the technicians of the Cabildo and people like the late Adán Martín or Ricardo Melchior, two presidents who supported the project, or the councillors Fernando Capdevila, José Manuel Bermúdez, Dámaso Arteaga, Cristo Pérez and of course, Eduardo Pintado who instigated the project. All have enabled us to be here today and we continue fighting to have this infrastructure. “ Amongst those attending were manager of Onda Rossa and CEO of Axia, Riccardo Ferretti, the honorary consul of Italy, Silvio Pelizzolo and the director of the circuit, Walter Sciacca. The project is creating 50 jobs during construction and 50 when up and running. Cristo Pérez said: “It is not
simply a work, but the realisation of dreams and hopes by many people over the years. It is a credit to all those
who believed and still believe in such an important project for Tenerife.” The ceremony of laying the
first stone began with a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the Italian earthquake.

P
OLICE in Tenerife have broken up a gang of robbers who homed in on bank customers and deliberately speared their tyres.
On one occasion, they managed to steal 10,000 euros from a victim who went back to his car and found he had a puncture. Another vehicle then pulled up behind him, two men got out and offered to help change the tyre. Unknown to him, however, they were members
of the criminal network and whilst he was distracted, they stole his briefcase and all the money. National Police have arrested four men aged between 20 and 57 years old and a woman of 48, all of Colombian origin. They used a method known
as “pinchazo”, using sticks with sharp points on the end to prick tyres. When two houses were raided in Santa Cruz, police found 30 of these metal tubes and a grinder. The gang would pick their target by hanging around inside banks and watch for customers withdrawing large amounts.
