Wall collapses, bringing down 1,000 kilos of stone

P F

IREFIGHTERS said it was lucky there were no injuries after a wall collapsed in Santa Ursula, bringing down more than 1,000 kilos of stone.

The incident happened on the Carretera España at about 9pm. Firefighters based in La Orotava were called out and sent two engines to the scene following a 112 alert. No-one was hurt but several vehicles were buried under the stones and the road was blocked. A road crew had to be called in to floodllight the area so the firemen could deal with the debris. The Civil Guard and local police also attended.

A major operation took place which has led to the reporting of 62 people for “camping” on the beaches of Diego Hernández and Los Morteros. The Civil Guard also counted the existence of 85 illegal buildings in this area classified as a Site of Scientific Interest. The operation was carried out by agents of the Service of Nature Protection of the Civil Guard of Playa de las Américas, with the reinforcement of seven components of the Corps, patrols of the Local Police of Adeje and an inspector of the Demarcation of Coasts of the State in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, who inspected the status of the Site of Scientific Interest.

The 85 illegal constructions include huts of wood, stone and in caves, all of them within this important natural space that has only access on foot. “The 62 people were reported as directly responsible for the buildings referred to and considered alleged perpetrators of very serious infringements under the laws

protecting the natural spaces of the Canary Islands,” said a police spokesman. It is alleged that many of the people found in the area were living there permanently and had “altered the habitat by these illegal human settlements.” The area is protected because of its natural elements of scientific interest and animal and plant life on the endangered species list. This coastal area is about

three km long and features small coves that are located between cliffs of volcanic origin, which have been sculpted by marine erosion. The stone layers clearly show different colours. The Civil Guard is now preparing a report which will go to the prosecutor’s office to determine if any environmental crime has been committed.
