TENERIFE LOOKS TO ITS TOURISM FUTURE
ENERIFE wants to increase its appeal to the Spanish market, grow in quality, attract more flights from different locations and encourage visitors to spend more. Both the Cabildo and municipalities throughout the island put forward their plans for the year ahead at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) in Madrid. This summer, the holiday resorts of the island will be facing new challenges due to the “bounce-back factor” from the previous competing destinations of Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia. Tenerife as a whole will be promoting its gastronomy and diverse leisure activities as well as its traditional attractions. It also wants to bring more tourists in from the mainland, the second biggest market to the British. Arona says it wants to move forward by offering holidaymakers something different and to become known
as “the red carpet” municipality which hosts numerous top events. The Mayor, José Julián Mena said they were in a position of “ unimaginable strength”. He said the municipality had recovered the confidence of investors and it wanted to become a benchmark, both in Tenerife and the Canar y Islands, for hosting public events of a national and international nature. “Arona is positioned in this situation as the Canarian capital of leisure, an offer based on national and international events, always linked to values, and within the framework of one of the best climates in the world,” he said. Events being promoted
include the Los Cristianos Carnival, Tenerife Fashion Week, Las Americas Pro surfing and the the ARN Culture & Business Pride. Puerto de la Cruz, meantime, is promoting itself internationally as a destination for wellness and health, linked to high quality services and excellent renovated hotels. The Mayor, Lope Afonso said this gave another dimension for the five million tourists who chose Puerto for their holidays each year and took the municipality back to its roots. The Loro Parque company was also represented at Fitur to promote Loro Parque itself, Siam Park, the new Poema del Mar aquarium, the Hotel Botánico and Oriental Spa Garden and Brunelli’s Steakhouse. Los Realejos wants to promote itself as a venue of excellence for sport, recreation and leisure whilst
LATE-NIGHT TERROR ON TF-5
A
car travelling in the wrong direction brought latenight terror to the TF-5 motorway in the north of Tenerife.
The horrifying incident also left five people injured, including an eight-year-old child. The so-called “kamikaze” caused at least three crashes, one of them a head-on collision on a curve at El Sauzal. A full investigation is underway to determine whether the driver knew what he was doing, whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs or simply went the wrong way by mistake. The accidents on Sunday night prompted massive traffic jams in the area on the north highway in the direction of Puerto de la Cruz.
Granadilla says it is a municipality of experiences. Costa Adeje, the biggest tourist municipality, says it is no longer a question of attracting more holiday-ma-

He was seriously injured but is out of danger. There are reports that the victim, who came originally from Venezuela, had only recently complained to the police about mistreatment at
the hands of her husband. She was given protective advice but the complaint was filed as she was considered of “low risk”, according to the Spanish press. The Mayor of Los Realejos, Manuel Domínguez said he was very shocked as he had known them both and awareness and knowledge of domestic violence had to be raised once again. The municipality declared two days of mourning and held an official silence in her memory.
