EASTER SHOWCASE FOR TENERIFE Island promotes its traditions for tourist appeal

T

ENERIFE is gearing up to celebrate Easter in the way it does best: traditional plays, religious acts and processions.

Hundreds of thousands of people, locals and holidymakers alike, are expected to travel to all parts of the island for the “Semana Santa” activities. Leading the way will be the municipalities of Adeje, La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz and La Laguna which are always top of the list for spectacular celebrations. But towns and villages inbetween all have their own festivities and are calling on visitors to give their support to events which add to the tourist appeal of Tenerife at a time when the Canaries face renewed competition from the resurgent markets of Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia. It’s going to be a mixed Easter weather-wise with sunshine, clouds and possibly a few showers in some areas but the prospects are good in the south for a scorching Easter Sunday. “Tourism, faith, religion and heritage” will be the key themes for Adeje which celebrates a full Holy Week. The Mayor, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said the municipality managed to combine modernity with tradition with an appeal for all ages. This is reflected in a new and unique event, a children’s procession on March 24th in Los Olivos from 5pm. The highlight, of course, is the recreation of the Passion on Good Friday, March 30th from noon (but arrive early because of the massive crowd!) Full programme on www.adeje.es The Holy Week of La Orotava aspires to be a Festival of Tourist Interest in the Canary Islands and is already a benchmark in the Canaries and is described as “a true exponent of art, histor y, tradition and devotion.” A promotional brochure is published in several languages with information about the main

processions of La Orotava. This triptych is distributed in hotels on the island and in the Municipal Tourism Office, in order to reach as many tourists as possible. Although it has always been an attraction for visitors, in recent years there has been a notable increase in tourists visiting during Easter week. Celebrations started on March 16th and run to Sunday, April 1st (see www.laorotava.es) Puerto de la Cruz also regards its Holy Week as of great importance and believes the programme showcases all that is best in the municipality for visitors. There will be several processions and a full programme on Maundy Thursday and Easter Friday. Granadilla de Abona is staging “Apasióna-T”, a pro-

gramme of leisure activities aimed at the general public during Holy Week in the coastal area of the municipality. This initiative will be developed, specifically, in El Médano and Los Abrigos, from March 23rd to 31th, and includes routes, talks, cinema, fair and musical performances, among others. There will be outdoor cinema, musical concerts, a photographic exhibition, walks, children’s entertainment and more to “take advantage of the great influx of visitors” over Easter (see http://www.granadilladeabona.org/). Thousands of people will also flock in to La Laguna (see http://www.aytolalaguna.com for full programme in English) with dozens of processions spread over Holy Week and a range of associated events. Arona too has an Easter programme from March 23rd to April 1st in all parts of its municipality.

OLICE swooped on a number of beaches in Tenerife after dozens of yellow parcels of drugs were spotted in the sea.

Underwater divers had to be called in to help with the search for more packages which were believed to have been thrown overboard by so-called narco gangs from Morocco.

Police believe their boat either got into trouble in the rough seas and they abandoned their haul or they thought they had been spotted by the authorities.

rocks. Most of the calls came from the picturesque coastal area of Abades in the south-east of the island with other parcels being spotted at two other nearby beaches popular with tourists and locals. Divers with the Civil Guard were called in to look for either a sunken boat or bodies but

nothing was found. A police helicopter also helped with the search, together with officers from the popular resort of Playa de las Americas. Several hours were spent retrieving the 30 packages which each contained between 30 and 40 kilograms of hashish and were taken to Tenerife’s police headquarters. No arrests have yet been made but police believe the same Moroccan network is behind the racket.

Tenerife mourns loss of its brightest star

SPECIAL LINK

Hero police officer saves man in sea

A

hero police officer jumped into the sea when he saw a man in distress at the weekend.

T

ENERIFE had special reason to mourn the death on March 14th of Professor Stephen Hawking.

The eminent physicist and scientist, who finally lost his battle against a rare form of motor neurone disease, loved the island as much as people here loved and admired him. Despite his extreme disability and being totally

confined to his wheelchair, Prof. Hawking was guest of honour twice at the Starmust Festival when it was held in Tenerife. On one occasion, he was told he could not fly to the Canaries so took a month-long cruise to get here instead!

Even when in Tenerife, he did not rest on his laurels as he declared he wanted to see as much as possible of the island and went on trips to numerous historic sites and beauty spots. Afterwards, he said he was enchanted by Tenerife and all who met him felt the same way about this remarkable man.

Both were successfully rescued by the emergency helicopter which was called out to the coastal area of Rojas in El Sauzal in the midafternoon on Sunday. The alert was raised through a call to the 112 emergency centre and Maritime Rescue was activated, as well as the Canary Emergency Service, local police and the Civil Guard. They were told a man was in the water and was obviously in distress. A local police officer then jumped into the sea and stayed with the 25-year-old man until both were rescued by the helicopter crew. The man was taken to hospital suffering from cuts and bruises and semi-unconsciousness. The police officer was not hurt.

Diver pulled from water in Las Galletas

A

Lithuanian diver was rushed to hospital in a serious condition after being pulled from the water in Las Galletas.

The 49-year-old man was found to be in cardiac arrest but medics managed to recover his pulse after advanced resuscitation. The incident happened in the port of Las Galletas at about 1pm on March 14th. An emergency call to the 112 control centre reported that a diver in trouble had been rescued from the water but was in an unconscious state. SUC personnel managed to reverse his heart stoppage and he was taken to hospital in the south.

AIRLINE PRAISED

TWO DEATHS

Passenger Double tragedy hours apart in Adeje escorted off Binter T plane after “offensive remark” HERE was a double tragedy in the municipality of Adeje when two people drowned on the same day and just hours apart.

C

ANARY airline Binter has been praised for its “zero tolerance” approach to unruly behaviour after a passenger was escorted off a holiday flight after allegedly shouting offensive abuse at a stewardess. Police in Spain have confirmed the pilot called in the Civil Guard as a result of the commotion on board a Binter airline which was travelling the La Palma to Tenerife route. The man, in his 70s, is said to have shouted at the stewardness whilst hitting the side of his seat before take-off. He is alleged to have made a racist comment to the air steward who has since been praised for her professionalism at “remaining calm at all times” despite her upset. It is understood the stewardess had asked the man to prepare for take-off and put away his work. Passengers on the flight said the man’s behaviour caused consternation and several of them shouted at him to get off the plane. Reports say the man refused

several times to get off but eventually agreed, shouting that he was happy to do so but wanted his money back. After the incident, the flight was able to continue its journey to Tenerife’s north airport. On its Twitter site, Binter confirmed there had been a “racist incident” on board one of their flights which had been resolved by the authorities.” It also posted: “We want to express our utmost rejection and outrage at behaviour of this type and show our full support to our crews who constantly strive to provide the best service to our customers. “ One of the replies included a reply from another air stewardess who praised Binter for its “zero tolerance” attitude towards abuse. It is understood an official complaint has been made to the Civil Guard.

In the first, a British man died after being pulled unconscious from the swimming pool of a hotel. Medics tried to revive him but without success. A spokesman from the 112 emergency service said the man had drowned.

Police and medics were called to the hotel in calle Londres just before 1.25pm. The 112 spokesman said: “A call was made asking for help for a man who was in cardiorespiratory arrest after being rescued from the water in the pool of a hotel in the area

mentioned above. According to the person who raised the alert, a doctor who happened to be there had begun to perform resuscitation.” “When emergency medics arrived, they continued with basic and advanced techniques but without success and the man was declared dead at the scene.” The man’s nationality was

confirmed as British. He was 79 years of age. Just a few hours later, medics were called out to the beach in Fanabe after a 70year-old German man was pulled out of the sea. Prolonged attempts were made to revive him and at one stage, the emergency helicopter landed on the beach. The man could not be saved.

Man arrested in Gran Canaria after posting sex tape online

BLACKMAILED WOMAN

A

sex pest who blackmailed a British woman into visiting him in Spain against her will for four years has finally been arrested in the Canary Islands. Spanish police say the man carried out his threat and posted a sex tape of them together online to get his “revenge” when she eventually finished their relationship. They believe the video was taken against her will and without her knowledge but was used by the man as

“ammunition” for her to continue to visit him in Ibiza and Gran Canaria. The sex tape was recorded six years ago when the woman was on holiday in Ibiza in 2012. “At that time, both of them had sexual intercourse that was recorded, presumably,

without the consent of the woman,” said a police spokesman. “When the victim indicated that she did not want to continue with the relationship, the detainee told her about the video and said would not hesitate to publish it if necessary. For this reason, she agreed to continue visiting him in Ibiza and Gran Canaria every so often, travelling from the United Kingdom, although she

finally broke off the relationship. Later, she discovered the existence of the video on several pornographic sites.” The investigation began when officers received information, through Interpol, from Humberside police who requested help following the lodging of a complaint there. The woman’s nationality was confirmed as British and it is understood the man was Canarian or Spanish.

Arona wins elimination of so-called “great city of Cabo Blanco”

NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Recycling boost for Granadilla with prestigous award

A

RONA says it has managed to eliminate the prospect of the so-called “great city of Cabo Blanco” from the island’s planning blueprint.

Arona council says the proposed development was not needed or wanted and control of the area has now returned to a local level and residents. “The project, which envisaged the development of a large residential area of more than four million square metres between Cabo Blanco and Buzanada, had been included in the Insular Plan of Ordination (PIOT) in 2002, with the objective of responding to the great growth population of the southern region, an increase that, according to this plan, would be absorbed almost entirely by the municipality of Arona,” said a council spokesman. The Mayor, José Julián Mena said there had been “clear opposition” to the plan. “The “great city of Cabo Blanco” envisaged a concentration between this nucleus and Buzanada of more than 100,000 people, a possibility that had been rejected by both myself and the entire government group, which initiated the procedures for its elimination from the start of the current mandate,” he said. “The model of the municipality and city that we propose for Arona moves away from the construction of dormitory towns, but also of a disproportionate residential growth in favour of other more sustainable uses, such as

planning of infrastructure land, infrastructures or equipment, both public and private. “ Arona says the introduction of the new Land Laws helped their case but it was still necessar y to take the

objections to Tenerife Cabildo. “The council’s actions before the island area of Territorial Policy ensure that the Cabildo fully approves the process that allows the Structuring Singular Operation

(OSE) of Cabo Blanco to remain, definitively, outside the insular planning and the ordering of that land in municipal hands and their residents,” said the Arona authority.

Sermugran is the only Canarian entity to receive a Blue Pajarita from Aspapel, along with 36 other municipalities throughout Spain. In eleven months of managing the paper and cardboard collection service, which began in February 2017, the local administration has managed to obtain the Pajarita Azul, the excellence programme of the Spanish Association of Pulp, Paper and

FAIR AND COMPETITION

Spotlight turns again on Canary cheeses

T

HE Pinolere Cultural Association has announced the sixth edition of the Insular Cheese Competition of the island of Tenerife Pinolere 2018. The competition will be part of the eighth Cheese Fair of the Canary Islands on April 7th and 8th.

The cheese judged the best by a jury will this year receive the Pedro Molina Ramos award in tribute and recognition of the work and support that the late President of AGATE (Association of Cattlemen of Tenerife) made with the cheese sector of Tenerife and the Canar y Islands. Another novelty of this edition is that the judges will meet to taste and score all the samples presented at the Botanical Hotel & The Oriental

Spa Garden of Puerto de la Cruz, with the intention of linking more and more the local product with the tourist world. Their decisions will be announced on April 8th during the Pinolere Cheese Fair with free tastings and comments. The Pinolere Cultural Association expects a high participation in the Insular Cheese Competition of Tenerife (last year there were 78 samples made by 28 cheese factories, and apart from the winner, three gold

medals were given, seven silver medals , three of bronze, and a special distinction of the jury). The two-day fair is at the Pinolere Museum and Ethnographic Park in La Orotava. It is organised by the Pinolere Cultural Association “Cultural Project”, with the purpose of the promotion and diffusion of Canarian cheeses.

Cardboard Manufacturers ( ASPAPEL). The award was presented at an event at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, chaired by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, Isabel García Tejerina, and the Secretary of State of Environment, María García Rodríguez. Representing Granadilla were the Mayor, José Domingo Regalado; the president of Sermugran and councillor for the environment, Marcos González; the vice president of the municipal society, María Candelaria Rodríguez; the manager of Sermugran, Juan Manuel Plasencia, and the president of ASPAPEL, Enrique Isidro. The evaluation is based on 21 indicators, which analyse ever ything related to the collection of the blue container and complementary collections, the campaigns and information actions and citizen awareness, aspects related to regulation, management planning and results and traceability to final recycling. The Mayor said: “Granadilla de Abona and the population is in luck. We are a national reference in terms of selective collection and the commitment made in the reduction of waste that we finally send to landfill. Obtaining our first Blue Pajarita is a boost to the management and involvement of the municipal company, the invaluable neighbourhood collaboration and an implication of the workers of society, to which we appreciate their important effort. “

DAYLIGHT ROBBERIES

Burglary gang picked house locks after “knocking on doors”

P

OLICE in Tenerife say they have broken up a burglary gang which had been operating on the island for several months.

Two men, aged 28 and 21 and both Spanish, have been arrested in Añaza. They are believed to be two of the members of a group of criminals dedicated to robberies in homes. The pair used the same technique of picking the locks and are said to have been operating since the end of 2017. More than 20 robberies are being attributed to them.

Police say they acted during the day and would keep watch on properties before knocking on the front door on several occasions to verify that no-one was in. The investigation began after a slight increase in crimes in the northern area of the island. The thieves used a special sort of key which fractured the cylinder of the locks and managed to open the door. Once

Radazul beaches reopen after sand replacement

T

HE beaches of Radazul have reopened to the public after completion of the works to replace the sand.

The two coves of Radazul have benefited from some 2,000 cubic metres of sand executed by the coastal department. The Mayor of El Rosario, Escolástico Gil, visited the area while the workers of the company in charge of the work culminated removal of the perimeter fence. During the execution of the work of unloading and smoothing the sand, and to guarantee safety, access to the beaches was forbidden.

There had been no sand replenishment in the area since inauguration of the coves in 2010. The work was carried out by the company Ascolcan SL and involved an investment of some 30,000 euros. The General Directorate of Coasts carries out periodically this type of work of regeneration of beaches in the Canary coasts, fundamentally during the months of autumn and winter to cause the minor possible disruption.

HE emergency helicopter was needed to rescue a hiker who suffered health problems in Tenerife.

The 67-year-old man was out walking on the Montaña Blanca footpath in the Las Cañadas del Teide National Park when he became ill. Medics and the Civil Guard reached him and gave him initial assistance but because of the serious nature of his condition, he needed to be airlifted, first to the north airport and then by ambulance to the University Hospital.

members, with two entering the house and a third one staying outside in a vehicle to keep watch. The National Police continues with the investigation for the arrest of the third member of the group. The money and jewllery stolen amounted to 70,000 euros.

ENERIFE has been hosting the shooting of the German film “A Family Holiday with Friends”.

The film involved being on location for a month with production-spend on Tenerife estimated at 750,000 euros. “A Family Holiday with Friends”, produced between February 21st and March 21st, is a 90-minute film by Bavaria Fiction, Degeto and the ARD television channel. Local production company Seven Islands Film assisted and Tenerife Cabildo gave support through Tenerife Tourism Corporation’s Film Commission. Tourism councillor Alberto Bernabé said the 750,000 euros was spent on the island on accommodation, equipment rental or maintenance, proof of the important economic and promotional impact of this type of film

The German crew was made up of some 30 people plus 50 professionals and 100 local extras hired by Seven Islands Film. The film will be premiered at prime time on the German TV channel ARD (which has the largest audience in the country). Las Galletas has been and will be the subject of several projects, such as the opening of the Business Centre, the rental of a public parking area for residents and visitors, actions within the framework of the three asphalting plans and the conditioning of playgrounds. It is hoped that conditioning of the plaza will create a leisure space that becomes a benchmark in the municipality. The project has a deadline of five months and will begin shortly. The two play areas will be for children up to the age of six years and for those aged six to 12. The area will contain game elements linked to the sea. “We are fulfilling one of the proposals of the electoral programme because of the importance that the plaza has for Las Galletas, a meeting point for children, young and old,” said Sr. Mena. Puerto’s new recycling point proving a success A new mini-recycling point in Puerto de la Cruz has proved such a success that it has already collected two tons. The service was only introduced on January 31st in a bid to encourage residents to deposit selective items such as batteries, electronic devices and so on which can’t be mixed with household waste. Between its inauguration and February 22nd, it was located on Avenida 8 de Marzo. The service had three pick-up shifts and in them, according to data from Tenerife Cabildo, around two tons of waste was collected. Councillor for general servicecs, Ángel Montañés welcomed its success so far,

saying it had led to a reduction in the presence of these types of separable waste in other containers. The mini recycling point moved to calle on March 23rd. Residents are being

reminded that through this service they can deposit vegetable oils, electronic waste, paints, clothes and shoes, wood, metals, paper and cardboard, batteries, xrays and inks or toners.

RAINY ARRIVAL

Black swans at Loro Parque welcome new chick to their family

T

HE Lake Thai at Loro Parque has recently had a new occasion for celebration. This time, it is the family of the black swans or Cygnus atratus, which has increased by a new member. These majestic birds have recently laid several eggs, which have been at the centre of attention of the keepers of the park. Now, the birth of a new chick hasbrought joy both to the swan family and the team that watches after the birds. The new chick is perfectly healthy and enjoys everybody’s attention and affection. The visitors of the park may already observe him swimming with his family in the beautiful Lake Thai, which is home to many different species of birds and vegetation. Among them, a special attention is received by a large group of brightly coloured Koi carps, which come in direct contact with the black swans. The black swan or Cygnus atratus is a species, which usually breed during the rainy season, and this time was no different. These majestic birds

normally build a nest using aquatic vegetation, which can measure up to two metres in diameter and one metre in height. Both parents are in charge of giving care to their offspring and this period normally lasts nine months since the moment of the hatching. They lay between four and eight eggs and the incubation lasts between 35 and 40 days. This is exactly the process in progress and one of the first results is the birth of the new chick. As for the appearance of these noble birds, their black feathers contrast significantly with the bright red colour of their beaks. They are exclu-

sively herbivores, do not migrate and, like other swans, are characterised by their monogamy, as they maintain a lifelong relationship with their couples. Considering that breeding is one of the natural animal behaviours that take place when all the animals’ needs and necessities are properly fulfilled, this new birth confirms the excellent wellbeing of these birds in Loro Parque. It is yet another indication of the dedication and efforts of the team of experts that guarantee the best care for the animals of Loro Parque, recognised as the Best Zoo in the World by TripAdvisor.

WO brothers are believed to have become the first duo in the world to row the Atlantic on a vegan diet!

More councils back Icod’s campaign for permanent pedriatic service

M

ORE local councils are backing the campaign started by the Mayor of Icod de los Vinos to bring back the pediatric emergency services to the north hospital as soon as possible. The municipality of Garachico and La Orotava have now given their support to José Ramón León’s call. They are asking the University Hospital of the Canary Islands (HUC) and the Ministr y of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands to look at the resumption as a matter of great urgency. Sr. Leon says the service should be provided on a permanent basis for 24 hours on weekends and holidays. Icod de los Vinos council is anticipating that more administrations will add their weight to the call in the coming weeks. The campaign was prsented to the councils of the

ESIDENTS and visitors to El Medano have been asked for their patience as works are undertaken to improve traffic flow and provide more parking. The project started on March 15th and is expected to take around three weeks. The work is being carried out in calle Brasil, adjacent to the Centre for Early Childhood and Primary Education (CEIP) Montaña Roja. Granadilla’s councillor for public works, María Concepción Cabrera, said the street would become one way instead of a double direction in order to help circulation, especially that of the bus service. It will also provide 75 new parking spaces. The authority says it is hoped the work will be finished by Easter and apologised for any disruption.

region and La Orotava in October of last year. “The north of Tenerife has been demanding since 2010 the start-up of a pediatric emergency service at the Hospital del Norte, located in Icod de los Vinos, which would allow at least one pediatrician on duty to a potential population of 170,000 people, of which more than 25,000 are children and young people under 16 years of age,” said the Mayor. Sr. Leon said Icod de los Vinos regared the suspension of this service with concern. “It is our understanding that the problem is not lack of will of the University Hospital

management and we understand that there may be difficulties to find specialists but it is necessar y to have thorough information to clarify if the necessary efforts have been made and if the offers made to pediatricians are attractive enough to capture the professionals that are needed”. “The municipality of Icod de los Vinos requires the resumption of the pediatric emergency service at the Hospital del Norte as soon as possible, and in any case, it will not be in any way acceptable to lengthen this situation for a long period of time, given its justification and necessity, which we have claimed so much; Therefore,

together, we will be able to raise a common voice, stronger and able to find a solution to this great problem that we have in this area of the island.

Puerto offers instant reporting service for municipal problems NEW APP

P

UERTO de la Cruz has set up a special hotline so visitors and residents can instantly report local problems such as broken streetlights, dirty streets or water leaks. The local council says the tool “Green Line” will improve municipal management and encourage communication with citizens. The initiative is joined by the launch of the platform www.tupuertodelacruz.com. Details of the new App and web portal were presented by the Mayor, Lope Afonso and councillor of general services and works, Angel Montañés.

Green Line also offers an environmental consulting service in which experts answer questions. Lua Gil Ramos, Alejandro López Domínguez and Yaumara Ocampos Lorenzo were awarded in different categories for the completion of this work. On the one hand, Gil was decorated for the best rawing, chosen by the painter Osman. In addition, she has been selected to represent Spain in the international section. Throughout the year, a total of 450,000 young people between 11 and 13 years belonging to different local schools or youth associations from 75 countries participate. Meet Zafira

Z

AFIRA is a seven month old female puppy. Zafira came into the refuge through no fault of her own as her previous owners had to leave the country and couldn’t take her with them. She is extremely friendly and very beautiful. Her colour is very unique and she is sure to capture your heart! Like any young puppy, she is very playful and loves to run around and go crazy for a bit. On the other hand, she is very loving and is sure to sit by your side for a fuss. She is very well behaved and already knows basic commands like “sit” and “paw”. She loves going for walks and is very good with other dogs, as long as they want to play too! Because she is still young and learning, she needs an adopter with the time and patience to train her. She will make a fabulous addition to any household and we hope her stay at the refuge is short. We hope someone will give this gorgeous girlie a second chance, as she does not deserve to grow up in a refuge. If you can offer Zafira a home, please contact us on 667638468.

Meet Our Dogs

O

N Sunday, March 11th, an informative open day was held regarding the responsible sighting and conservation of whales and dolphins in Tenerife.

These awareness and training programmes are carried out thanks to the collaboration between the World Cetacean Alliance, the most important NGO in the world dedicated to the protection of cetaceans, and Freebird Catamaran, a whale and dolphin watching excursion company in Tenerife, which hosted 21 Erasmus students of ten different nationalities who are currently doing their internships in the south of the island, coordinated by Tenerife Job Training. This was the first contact with cetaceans in their natural habitat for everyone, learning about how they work in the protection of their environment. The majority of them are tourism students who for the first time are experiencing, in a completely different way, touristic programmes in a European destination. These programmes encourage immersion in the local culture and awareness of the conservation of the natural environment. It is essential to raise the awareness of host companies about the importance and impact of these programs at the educational and promotional level of our destination as a European benchmark for training.

Archaeological dive reveals more secrets of sunken ship

F

URTHER diving explorations in Gran Canaria have revealed more of the secrets of the wreck of a sunken boat of the 18th century.

The latest archaeological explorations were carried out during January and February in the waters off the beach of El Burrero, on the coast of the municipality of Ingenio. The boat is lying about 30 metres from the shore. The Cabildo’s Minister of Culture, Carlos Ruiz, accompanied by the Mayor of Ingenio, Juan Diaz and councillor for beaches, Chani Ramos, visited the offices of the Club Nautico de El Burrero to see some of the the remains recovered from this sunken wreck almost three centuries ago and discovered in 1962 by the diver Tomás Cruz. During the fifth exploration of the wreck, a team of three people led by the Sevillian archaeologist specialising in underwater operations, Josué Mata Mora, spent 120 hours under the sea in order to delimit their remains and analyse the state of conservation of the timber that had been documented in the 2008 campaign. The prospecting was carried out at a depth of three to four metres. According to the experts, the proximity of

the remains to the coast and the low depth have had a significant influence on this site. Erosion and pillage have also caused problems. They believe the boat might have an English origin and remains of flint showed stone was used as ballast. A few fragments of ceramics have also been found, traced back to the Rhineland (Germany) in the 16th century and later imitated by the workshops of Devon (England) in the 17th and 18th century. Ceramic pipes have also been found which could have been manufacturd in Holland and England between the 17th and 18th centuries. Likewise, remains of the on-board cutlery have been recovered, such as a pewter ladle with remains of Baroque decoration, possibly used for the service of officers. The previous four explorations were made in 1962, 1968, 1994 and 2008 and it is considered one of the most interesting underwater archaeological sites in Gran Canaria. It is believed the ship might be a pirate boat which sunk in 1741.

Non-urgent health transport soars to nearly 900,000

T

HE non-urgent sanitary transport bureau managed a total of 884,895 services in the Canaries during 2017, with 461,213 patients transferred. More than half, 53 per cent, corresponded to transfers to go to rehabilitation treatments, while 32 per cent needed to go to a health centre to attend the dialysis sessions. The rest of the services related to medical consultations, diagnostic tests and discharges from wards or emergency, mainly. From Monday to Friday, the daily average of services is around 3,400, although transfers are also made on weekends for dialysis and discharges. The services are counted as the number of times the patient uses a seat, either a single trip or a round trip. The Non-Urgent Sanitary Transport Bureau, managed by the public company Management of Services for Health and Safety in the Canary Islands

(GSC), has a fleet of 234 resources throughout the archipelago and takes care of the transfers requested by a doctor from the Canary Health Service if it is physically impossible for the patient to use ordinar y means of transport. Regarding the type of services attended, 95.4 per cent of the total corresponded to scheduled services, referring to those requested at least 12 hours in advance. The rest of the transfers correspond to deferred services, which are requested to the Non-Urgent Transportation Board (MTSU) without advance notice, for example, once the patient receives a discharge in the plant or in the emergency room.

Scare as householder finds mortar T OLD GRENADE

HERE was a scare for a householder in Gran Canaria when he discovered a mortar shell in his home!

Bomb squad officers had to be called in to deal with the 81-mm grenade unearthed in a house in Valleseco. The man called the Civil Guard who adopted the mandatory security measures and cordoned off the area before the arrival of GEDEX. A closer inspection revealed the mortar was in an inert state, without an explosive charge, so it was safely withdrawn. The Civil Guard says that if anyone finds an unexploded device of military origin, they should immediately call 112 or the Civil Guard and should never move or touch it. “Keep a safe distance and don’t let anyone near it,” said a spokesman.

El Hierro president furious at flight delays and blames “economic stinginess”

T

HE president of El Hierro has hit out at unacceptable management of flights at the local airport which, she says, has to be addressed with urgency. Cabildo leader Belén Allende is to hold talks with the airports authority AENA and the Canary Government to improve the situation on the island. She says the situation was highlighted when Storm Emma hit the Canaries and led to the cancellation of El Hierro flights which, she felt, could have operated under different circumstances. In a stinging attack, the president said all of the island’s hard work to attract more visitors was being dented by “historical operational problems” created by “lack of foresight and economic stinginess.” She said the system of monitoring take-offs and landings under AFIS ( (Aerodrome Flight Information Service) had to be banished from El Hierro airport, claiming it was “strangling connectivity on

weekends, with a special impact when satura-tions occur in traffic derived from previous cancellations.” Belen Allende made these statements based on what happened on Sunday, February 25th when only one flight entered, the first in the morning, as a result of adverse weather. With an indication that the weather was going to improve, one flight left Tenerife north airport in the afternoon and another from Gran Canaria, both bound for El Hierro. Two football teams were among the passengers. The Cabildo president said in the end, neither flight could land on the island and had to return from their original departure point. She said this highlighted two of the “weaknesses” of Herrera Airport that negatively

affect its operation in moments of real need: the airport management with AFIS system and the restrictions that force the operational closure at sunset time . She is demanding solutions from AENA and the Canary Government to the problems which become more acute at times of civil protection alerts based on meteorological warnings, which led to cancellations and delays and accumulated in the late afternoons at an airport with limited hours.

“It is a contradiction to see that the spectacular growth in the movement of passengers registered last year that has led us to account for almost 200,000 passengers for the increase in discounts for the Canar y Islands and tourism promotion work, is overshadowed and affected by the historical operational problems, derived as always occurs in these cases by the lack of response from the administration, the lack of foresight and economic stinginess, “ she claimed.

Canary economy “growing at faster rate than Europe”

T

HE economy of the Canary Islands continues to grow and shows an interannual increase of 3.1 per cent in the gross domestic prod-

uct.

The Canar y Institute of Statistics recently published the Quarterly Accounting of the Autonomous Community corresponding to the last three months of 2017. The report that shows that,

during the fourth quarter of 2017, the GDP of the Archipelago grew by 3.1 per cent year-on-year. This means the Canar y economy has grown for the last 17 quarters. In fact, the third

quarter of 2013 was the last period that a decline was recorded, with -0.5% of GDP. Regarding the performance of individual sectors, construction showed the biggest growth, with an increase of 4.8 per cent in comparison with the same quarter of 2016. Next, is the industrial sector, with an increase of the 4.1 per

cent; while the services sector and the primary sector grew by 2.7 and 2.5, respectively. In addition, the report shows that the Canarian economy is moving at a faster rate than the European one, whose GDP growth stood at 2.6 per cent yearon-year, while the Spanish economy experienced the same growth as the Canary Islands.

Jellyfish prompt La Graciosa alert

H

EALTH chiefs have issued a warning after a particularly nasty type of jellyfish was found on the Lanzarote island of La Graciosa.

Swimmers were urged not to go into the water for a while because the so-called false jellyfish Physalia physalis, also known as the Portuguese frigate, has a very painful sting. A number of them were found along the island’s coastline and in Caleta de Famara at a time when carnival events were being celebrated so there were big crowds. It was feared that the currents might bring in more of the jellyfish so an alert was issued by the emergency committee. The Cabildo says care should be taken if a jellyfish is spotted and they should not be touched. If there is no warning out, the find should be reported to the nearest officials. Children and the elderly in particular should not be allowed into the water.

Diners encouraged to go organic

ECO BRAND

“Ecogastronomía” aims to link organic farming with the restaurant sector and give visibility to those establishments who use the sustainable raw materials in their dishes. “Consumers are increasingly concerned about knowing where the products come from and who the producers are, in addition to maintaining a healthy diet, so the initiative is committed to attract those diners who practise sustainable or ecological tourism,” said councillor for the primary sector, Miguel Hidalgo. The company behind the venture, Ecotouristing has involved organic producers, grouped in Biocanarias and Biocosecha Directa, a large number of catering establishments and other institutions or associations of the sector and also of tourism. The island currently has more than 300 hectares of organic crops and more than 250 operators.

“TOURISM CHALLENGES”

Canaries, Balearics and Basque Country join forces over holiday rentals

Concern over attacks as health professionals call for zero tolerance

A

LMOST 300 Canarian health workers suffered physical or verbal aggression during the past year.

The Satse Nursing Union has revealed that in 2017, there were 230 verbal, 18 physical and 45 violent episodes against professionals in the islands, although it is estimated that only eleven per cent of the cases are reported. The incidents, both in the public and private spheres, grew by 14 per cent compared to the previous year and is the second highest since 2010. Given this scenario, the union has launched a campaign to encourage professionals to report and raise awareness of the situation. Since 2010, when detailed records started, a total of 2,126 complaints have been registered but secretar y general of Satse in the Canary Islands, Leopoldo CejasFuentes said the real number of violent situations is higher because it is estimated that only eleven per cent of this type of attacks are reported. He also drew attention to the increase in verbal aggressions, which in many cases are linked to threatening words. He felt the increase in

numbers was due to the fact that professionals were heeding the call to report them and because aggressive incidents had generally increased any way, especially during the crisis years. Of the total number of complaints, 72 per cent had been filed by women. The Secretary General said it was important to educate professionals about the need to take action and have “zero tolerance” in this type of situation. It is planned to conduct a national study to learn more about this scenario and to press the Ministry of Health to implement measures to alleviate threatening situations. Satse’s new campaign includes the distribution of informative material in all health centres in the country, such as posters and stickers, as well as in videos, social networks and on the Internet. The objective is to raise awareness among citizens about the need to maintain a relationship of respect and trust between professionals, patients and family members.

T

HE Canary Islands are to join forces with the Basque country and the Balearics to “address the challenges facing tourism”, predominantly holiday rentals. Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, Isaac Castellano, announced the proposal following a meeting with councillors from both regions at the International Travel Fair in Berlin. Together, they are to create a working group but have already stressed that it is not just down to them; the Spanish Government had to play its part as well. “Among all, we have to achieve the best possible solution and, for this, it is important to know the experience of other territories, analyse the needs that the Government of Spain must address in its regulations, and see how we can achieve the best solution to this tourist activity that is already imple-

mented and that generates opportunities and obstacles, “ said Sr. Castellano. He also held a meeting with the Secretar y of State for Tourism, Matilde Asián, as well as with different airlines operating between Germany and the Canar y Islands. According to the director, these meetings have been very positive, since “these companies maintain their commitment to the Canary Islands as a destination.” “ We are aware that connectivity with the Canary Islands has experienced a decline due to the bankruptcy of several companies but the airlines with which we have held meetings have indicated their intention to increase connectivity with respect to the destination, especially in the

next winter,” he added. In this regard, he explained that “there is no direct correlation between the loss of connectivity and demand because the Canary Islands continues to be a ver y attractive destination in the German market.” Thus, he stressed that German tourism “is a faithful tourism: more than 78 per cent repeats, above the average, and 65.9 per cent of people who visit us already

know the islands of previous trips.” German tourists choose the islands for the beaches and activities that can be done in nature, such as hiking and hiking, whilst a significant part of visitors value the territory and landscapes. “This is a tourism sector that believes in the Canary Islands and our product. More than 93.4 per cent rate their stay as good or very good,” he added.

Two men arrested for Canary holiday home scam

THREATENED TOURISTS

T

WO men have been arrested in Gran Canaria for advertising false vacation homes in the Canary Islands.

Police said the two suspects, aged 21 and 28, both with police records, are accused of cheating tourists out of 7,750 euros. They advertised holiday homes in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and then threatened their victims so they would not report them. The arrests in Telde were triggered after complaints filed with the Civil Guard from several people who said they paid for a house they rented via the internet but never got to occupy. The police discovered that similar complaints had been lodged at other police stations in relation to a series of scams carried out with vacation rentals in the tourist areas of the south of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote and there was a common link. Covered by the supposed anonymity of the internet, the alleged authors created rental ads through a well-known website and managed to deceive many victims, making them believe that they were participating in a seemingly real rental business. For this, they created up to three accounts in different banking entities, in which they received transfers from the victims. One of the victims told police that after recognising that it was a scam, the individual he contacted by telephone threatened her if she went to report the facts to the police. The two individuals were located in the district of Ojos de Garza, in Telde, where they were arrested for alleged crimes of fraud and threats.

ANZAROTE’S Cabildo is inviting tenders for a project which will create a bike path connecting the promenade of Playa Honda with the airport. the bike route envisaged to unite Costa Teguise with Puerto del Carmen. Public works councillor Saray Rodríguez said the project would provide a safer route for cyclists and pedestrians heading for the terminals, as well as car drivers because the riders would not have to cross their path. “The project will be developed along part of the seafront and will run parallel to the current rainwater channel and perimeter fencing east-north of the runway and take-off of the airport,” she explained.

Brit arrested for selling drugs to tourists on Costal del Sol

A

British man has been arrested for selling the dangerous cannibal drug pyrovalerone to holidaymakers on the Costa del Sol.

Police said the 46-year-old singled out Brit tourists in the bars and clubs of Fuengirola and hid the drugs inside a leather bracelet he wore to deflect suspicion. He was caught red-handed in the popular nightspot zone following a tip-off that a British man was selling drugs. During the arrest, seven plastic bags with thermosealed containers containing cocaine - three of them inside the wristband - were found and 45 euros in cash. Later, when his house was searched, police seized a further stash, including 14 grams of MDPV, the cannibal drug, 50.5 grams of speed, 48 grams of cocaine, seven of MDMA, a score of ecstasy pills, a bottle of liquid ecstasy, four balloons containing nitrous oxide, scales and 900 euros. “Cannibal” is so-called because it can make people aggressive and act like they are possessed.

HIGH FINES

Tougher stance against smoking on terraces with “enclosed walls”

H

EALTH chiefs in Mallorca and Ibiza are to take an even tougher stance against smoking on any enclosed terrace of a bar, restaurant or club. Anyone caught flouting the law could be fined between 6,000 and 60,000 euros depending on the seriousness of the offence. In addition, people will not be allowed to smoke in cars in which there are children or pregnant woman. The tougher smoking ban, under the Law of Addictions, will also extend to public open spaces such as football pitches or sports venues. The original tobacco regulations came into force in 2011 but allowed people to have a cigarette on the terraces of bars and restaurants. Over the years, however, owners of numerous premises have put up walls, either temporary or permanent, on both sides of their terraces, often with a plastic roof to shelter customers from the wind and cold. Health chiefs have likened these to “cages”. Now, the Balearic Government says smoking will NOT be allowed on any outdoor terrace which has two walls.

At least one of the sides must be completely open to the outside. A minor offence would lead to a fine of up to 6,000 euros, between 6,000 euros and 60,000 euros and as much as 100,000 euros for various serious breaches. The new law is expected to be approved this year and will be enforced by health inspectors and the police. A spokesman from the Public Health department said they had nothing against the restaurant trade but “currently there is a problem with the interpretation of anti-smoking regulations in these open spaces.” It comes in the wake of the Balearic Government’s decision to ban all tourists from entering the islands with diesel cars from 2025 as it takes a tough new stance to protect the “endangered” environment from CO2 emissions. The same will happen with cars run by petrol but this will be from 2035.

INFRACTURE STRATEGY

Spain pledges protection for green environment Spain will have a new country-wide Green Infrastructure Strategy this year

T

HE objective will be to set guidelines to conserve corridors throughout the territory, land and sea, which ensure ecological connectivity and the functionality of ecosystems.

Secretary of State for the Environment, María García Rodríguez, made the announcement during a conference organised by the World Wildlife Fund in Madrid. Those present included the Director General of Environment of the European Commission, Daniel Calleja, and the general secretary of WWF, Juan Carlos del Olmo. Maria García Rodríguez pointed out that the objective of the Green Infrastructure State Strategy is to set the guidelines to identify and conserve the elements that make up the green

infrastructure of the Spanish territory, land and sea, to be able to plan, territorially and sectorally, by the administrations public, the actions that ensure the ecological connectivity and the functionality of the ecosystems. The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment is preparing it in collaboration with other ministries, autonomous communities and municipalities, for which a

working group has been created. Spain, as the EU has acknowledged in its latest evaluation reports, has made progress in protecting its habitats and recovering species. “We are the most biodiverse country in Europe,” said Maria García Rodríguez, having 2,100 spaces with some figure of protection.

OLICE in Spain have broken up an international people smuggling operation which charged Chinese citizens 20,000 euros to get into the UK with false passports.

Minister calls for law to combat terrorism messages on internet

S

PAIN has stressed the importance of clamping down on the use of the internet to prevent the spread of terrorism messages.

Minister of the Interior, Juan Ignacio Zoido told a meeting of the Council of Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs of the European Union held in Brussels that if this platform was taken away from the terrorists, they would be unable to indoctrinate, capture or publicise their aims. He said a public-private collaboration with internet providers was essential and advocated European legislation. At the moment, there was voluntary co-operation which was proving a success but it was now time to firm this up with new laws. Sr. Zoido also proposed that internet companies should be required to carry out more

controls on the identity of the people who register for their services. “We must be faster and more effective in the withdrawal of terrorist content once it has been uploaded to the platforms,” he urged. The Minister’s comments came in the same week as police arrested three people for praising the terrorist group ETA through social networks. In their messages, they asked people to continue with the armed struggle until obtaining the amnesty of terrorist prisoners and the independence of the Basque Country. The arrests were made in Vizcaya and Guipúzcoa.

The gang planned everything down to the last detail, including teaching them a smattering of English phrases so they could get through the airport controls. The four leaders were arrested in Barcelona, together with 151 suspects elsewhere in Spain, including 19 at Madrid airport, six in Alicante, five in Ibiza and one on the Costa del Sol in Malaga.

The majority, 111, were arrested in El Prat de Llobregat in Barcelona. Tourism chiefs say they intend to “stick to their promises” and introduce new legislation which will regulate a sector being blamed for “uncivic tourism”. No details have been hinted at but suggestions over the last few months have included banning unlimited alcohol or only serving drinks with meals. It is not known whether the government is considering a total ban on all-inclusive holidays, a move opposed by hoteliers who say it could lose the island hundreds of thousands of Brits, especially when added to the increase in the tourist tax from this May and the bounce-back factor from the competing destinations of Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey. Despite the fears, vicepresident of the Balearic Government and tourism councillor Bel Busquets announced

Three people involved in the falsification of banknotes and in their introduction in the financial circuit by means of the “drip system” have been arrested. In addition to Spain and Portugal, counterfeit notes have been detected with the same method in eight other European countries: Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Estonia, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The investigation began in August 2016 when Spanish police noticed an increase in seizures of counterfeit banknotes in Badajoz, specifically 20 and 50 euros, with specific counterfeiting characteristics that were novel. In parallel, false notes were also found circulating in Portugal, particularly 20 euros. Police found that an individual of Portuguese origin was the

Five properties were searched in Portugal and, in one of them, the person in charge was caught “in the act” while carrying out the finishing of a part of the counterfeit banknotes. PARAGUAY WOMEN

Spanish holiday hotel used as front for brothel

H

OLIDAYMAKERS using a Spanish hotel had no idea it was a front for a sex gang forcing women from Paraguay to work as prostitutes.

Police say the tourist complex in Asturias, including a restaurant, cafeteria, excursion office and hotel, were all started by the organisation to deflect attention from their real money-spinner. The value of the hotel business is being put at three million euros, simply to hide the club being run as a brothel on the same site. Fourteen people have been arrested in the police operation which centred around the tourist hotel on the coast of the 13th century historic town of Ribadesella. The brothel has now been closed and two of the women being held against their will freed. Police say the women forced into prostitution were coerced into coming to Spain from Paraguay to escape poverty or difficult financial circumstances. Many were unsuspecting relatives of the gang. A spokesman for the Spanish police said: “The network had been operating in the northern part of Spain for several years and many of its members had already been detained on several occasions so security measures were increasing. Communications between them were scarce and meetings were held in “trusted” places or buildings and in areas where they could not be seen. Likewise, they changed vehicles frequently, using about ten on a regular basis.” “Officers discovered that the network had created a whole tourist complex that included a hotel, a restaurant, a cafeteria and an active tourism company. Some members of the organisation, in charge of the direct operation of the club and other businesses, spent the night in the complex and in this way they could exert immediate control over the victims and local women.” Seven of the gang members were arrested in Ribadesella, four in Oviedo and three in Cantabria. Searches revealed three firearms and cartridges, computer equipment, two vehicles, more than 100 grams of cocaine and around 350,000 euros in cash. The Spanish hotel has not been named.

“UNACCEPTABLE CHARGES”

Consumer group reports Ryanair to European Parliament

A

consumer group in Mallorca and Ibiza says it is so fed up with moans about Ryanair that it has lodged an official complaint with the European Parliament and is considering legal action. Consubal, the association for consumers and users of the Balearic Islands, has accused the airline of “abusive practices” and is particularly

angr y about charges for parents and children if they want to guarantee sitting together. They claim Ryanair is cons-

tantly introducing new fees for “basics” with the sole intent of making more money. “These abusive practices go against the rights of the users,” says the consumer group. Consubal says the number of complaints it receives about Ryanair has been increasing for some time. It claims the company de-

liberately allocates different seats to parents and children simply to make families pay the extra charges of between 15 and 40 euros to sit together. The association is also against the new rule which means passengers who don’t book priority boarding have to put their hand luggage in the hold. “These passengers then have to wait for their cases and endure the subsequent delays, depending on the airport,” said a Consubal spokesperson. The group says it considers these practices “very serious” and contrary to the legislation in defence of the rights of consumers and users. “This is why we are studying a lawsuit,” said the spokesman. A spokesman for Ryanair said: “This claim of abusive practices” by Consubal is untrue. Hotels in Balearics to “lower their prices” this summer?

H

OTELIERS in Mallorca and Ibiza are planning to lower their prices this summer in a bid to stop Brits and Germans being lured away by Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey. They are worried that tour operators might cancel hundreds of thousands of places on flights to the Balearics as Turkey in particular sees a massive resurgence of nearly 100 per cent in bookings. The concern is being heightened by the doubling of Mallorca’s tourist tax to as much as three euros a day from May 1st. Hotel leaders in Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza say they are negotiating with holiday companies to offer “significant discounts” so they don’t lose customers from their main markets of the UK and Germany. Worries about safety in Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey over the last four years meant the Balearics didn’t have to rely on offers for the summer months of June, July and August. Now these countries are bouncing back, hoteliers in Mallorca say they are having to rethink their strategy. Spanish newspaper Ultimahora.es says the hotel leaders

have been discussing this at the International Travel Fair in Berlin. They have been told bookings for Tunisia are 99 per cent up whilst there has already been an increase of 61 per cent for Egypt and 26 per cent for Greece. They say there will be special offers in all the tourist hotspots of Mallorca, especially from independent groups. They are also talking to tour operators who would be able to pass on “significant discounts” to their British and German clients. Despite the “bounce back” threat, tourism leaders in the Balearics believe they will hold their own and 2018 will be on a par with last year if not better. However, the Hotel Business Federation of Mallorca says it IS worried about the effects of the increased tourist tax, despite the government’s upbeat predictions.

All other (non-priority) customers will still enjoy our free two carry-on bag allowance. They can bring one smaller carryon bag on board, while their second (bigger) wheelie bag

will be placed in the hold (free of charge) at the boarding gate. There has been no change to our carry-on bag policy, only an update, as we have always applied a limit of 90 carry-on bags on board for non-priority customers. Getting to know more about the Mental Health Foundation Did you know that in Tenerife alone there are over 10,000 people medically diagnosed with some mental health problem? Unlike many physical or sensory disabilities which can be pinpointed, understood and catered for by the family, mental health disorders can often be very complex especially in severe cases where erratic and aggressive behaviour occurs. This is particularly distressing and frightening for those families affected and so it is essential at this point for them to have professional organisations that they can turn to for assistance and understanding. However it should be remembered that there is a wide range of mental health disorders and many of the sufferers, given the right support and treatment, are able to retain a certain independence so that they can work and integrate within their community. It was to this end that on 10th June 2011, the tutelary EN PIE Foundation, a proactive and non-profit organisation, was created in the regional government of the Canary Islands.

Its main objectives can be defined in four words: Protection, Orientation, Activation and Integration

Protection

It was founded to protect the legal rights of citizens with severe and recurring mental disorders as well as to improve their quality of life. Many people are unable to cope when a family member is diagnosed with such a disorder and as a result conflicts can escalate without active professional assistance and direction. One of the objectives of En Pie is to practise direct guardianship whenever necessary (via court ruling) offering care to those in dependant and special vulnerable situations.

Orientation

“En Pie” means “Stand up” and as its name suggests the aim is to help sufferers to take a stand with the qualities they have as individuals, to point them in the right direction so that they are helped to help themselves within the community. Whilst working closely with public health, care administrations and mental health agencies En Pie Foundation does everything to create and support measures which avoid the loss of a person’s independence and

social exclusion. They assist patients in practising their rights as citizens, in accessing social goods and in practising the most essential activities of everyday life.

Activation To cut down on heavy smoking and obesity and in the belief that “a healthy body leads to a happier mind” over the years many activities and “Quality of life” projects have been organised by the team and volunteers with very successful results. Physical Exercise: These include organised outings to Ofra sports centre for sessions of paddle tennis, volleyball, swimming and gym fitness programmes. There have also been many productive activities such as gardening, building, agricultural and dry-stone wall repair projects as well as coastal clean-up exercises. Self image and confidence: This project is geared towards helping users to improve their outward appearance, which can often be neglected, to help reintegration. This includes: hairdressing, makeup, clothing and dental work. Artwork this lets loose creativeness where participants can interpret and express their imagination freely using all types of materials. Art has therapeutic effects and is a way for members to express how they are feeling with their creations later exhibited in the community and on occasions even sold!

Integration Interaction with volunteers

A very important aim for En Pie is to help eliminate the stigma attached to mental health sufferers and the best way to go about this is for them

to integrate within the community. For this reason we really greatly welcome all volunteers, whether corporate or otherwise, to join in as much as possible. As a result, various water-sport excursions such as body boarding and canoeing as well as environmental clean-ups have been hugely successful on so many levels. This is because apart from a fun, active and productive day out these projects enable users to work as a collective group and facilitates interaction and acceptance within the community.

Radio Radio El Dia reserves a slot once a week for a programme that is developed and run by our service users. It consists of testimonies and interviews aimed at showing people the reality of this collective group from a serious perspective but also with plenty of sense of humour.

Employment initiatives What better way to help users to integrate than by offering employment opportunities. Under the supervision of En Pie users have been successfully employed for gardening, cleaning and other physical tasks in companies and communities.

How can you help En Pie or En Pie help you? a) Are you having a clear out or moving?

If you are changing your furniture or moving and have stuff that can be sold on, these used goods can be offered to the foundation and if required they can be certified as an official tax deductible donation in much the same way as financial donations. The goods will be valued by the foundation which will then certify this with the necessary documentation and arrangements will be made for collection. Items can also be taken directly to our “Drop Off point on the Industrial Estate in Guimar.

b) Advice and assistance where urgent psychiatric care is required.

If you know of someone in desperate need of assistance due to

some mental health problem then En Pie can help point you in the right direction for help. On a number of occasions the British Consulate has called upon En Pie to assist them when a holiday maker has had a crisis and the correct treatment is unclear. The foundation works closely with Dr. Francisco Pulido who is one of the leading psychiatrists on the island as it is essential to receive professional assessment and medication at these times.

c) Would you like to join us as a volunteer?

All volunteers are extremely welcome to help out in whichever way suits them best: To join in the activities such as the coastal clear ups. Possibly there is a place near you that needs attention and something can be organised if there is a group of you ready to assist. Maybe you can offer a workshop or other activity to help our service users. The Foundation has recently acquired various premises to include an old Ecological Finca in Arafo which already has fruit trees and medicinal plants. Anyone who is interested in gardening and can spare some time would be most welcome.

The Museum at the Valle de Guerra, one of Tenerife’s ‘best kept secrets’ greenhouse with traditional vegetables, many of which seem exotic to us English. Back inside there’s a wonderful oldfashioned kitchen with more bread ovens and old cooking implements, a real step back in time.

NE of the best ways to publicise something and to attract attention is to call it a ‘best kept secret’. It’s tacky I know, but it seems to work, and the museum at Valle de Guerra certainly hides its light under a bushel.

A slight digression: Getting there by bus is an experience in itself. Take either the 051 or the 057 from La Laguna, they travel the same Tacoronte – Tejina circuit in opposite directions, and have your wits about you where to get off. Travelling anywhere by guagua enables you to see the sights from higher up, without distractions or having to worry about which turning to take or what other drivers are doing, and it’s cheap with a ‘Bono’ ticket. The frequency of the services is reliable, although the actual timings aren’t. For example, if you’re waiting for the half-hourly bus service, when it arrives you aren’t sure if it’s quarter of an hour early or quarter of an hour late, but the important thing is that it’s there. By the 051 and 057 you get to see Tacoronte and Tejina, and don’t be alarmed when the bus appears to shoot off towards Punta Hidalgo, it only does that to tease the traveller.

There’s confusion - for me at least, a simple Englishman - over its name: The full address is ‘Museo de Historia y Antropologia de Tenerife, Casa de Carta, Valle de Guerra, La Laguna’. ‘Casa de Carta’ translates as ‘House of the Charter’, implying that it could be a repositor y for documents – but no, de Carta was a family name. Then there is the place name of Valle de Guerra, or Valley of War. The only war on the island was between the native Guanches and the Spanish conquistadors, and their battles were fought somewhere else, not here. In fact ‘de la Guerra’ was another family name, that of the family who first owned the valley, to be followed by Captain Matias Rodriguez de Carta, who acquired the house in 1726. Calling it the ‘Museum of History and Anthropology’ doesn’t exactly create thrills of anticipation and excitement for most people. Although it’s grand sounding and technically correct to call it a museum of anthropology, the way we English normally interpret the meaning of the word ‘anthropology’ is ‘the study of man’s physical and sociological evolution’, whe-

reas this museum is all about traditional Canarian rural way of life. Anyway, the museum is a delight, and it has just celebrated its 31st anniversar y since opening. The building itself is a beautiful example of traditional archi-

tecture that survived by the skin of its teeth to the present day, when so many others have been altered, demolished or left to ruin. Its survival intact and unaltered could be due to a fairly recent period of ownership (and neglect?) by an English family.

The beautiful tea wood of the doors, floor boards and floor joists still exudes its scented resinous sap hundreds of years after the tree was felled. The range of displays includes tobacco growing and processing, basket making, ceramics, traditional musical instru-

ments and agricultural implements, while outside there’s a wine press, a gofio mill and a bread oven. Also outside there’s an intriguing water gauge (I had a good hard look at this and still couldn’t fathom out how it works), there’s a small example of a vineyard, and a

To return to the museum, the curators speak English, which for me is a coward’s way out with my inadequate Spanish, and they are really helpful. The biggest display is about traditional costumes of the seven islands that make up the Canaries, with illustrations by an English artist, Alfred Diston. Alfred Diston was one of the early ex-patriot English residents of Tenerife, he arrived in 1810 at the age of seventeen and lived here for most of his life until his death in Puerto de la Cruz in 1861. He painted and published his ‘Costumes of the Canar y Islands’ during the 1820’s and it’s a good job he did, the recreated costumes are based largely on his illustrations. My best beloved and I spent a good hour and a half or two hours wandering around – there’s a shady garden there as well. The museum’s one disadvantage is that the nearest café is visible only with binoculars (an exaggeration, but not by much), so be warned. Now go on - treat yourself to a half-day adventure to the Museo de Historia y Antropologia. (And for popular appeal it really could do with re-naming.)

There are six engines, ranging from 2-0-litre 180ps diesel to supercharged 3.0-litre 380ps V6 petrol. Advanced technology brings items such as slender fullLED headlights, and flush door handles contribute to making this the most aerodynamically efficient Land Rover ever

produced. Switches are kept to a minimum in the elegant interior where there is a new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system featuring two 10-inch high-definition touchscreens in the centre of the fascia. The door handles pop out when you click the fob to unlock the Velar and you enter a quality cabin with luxurious soft perforated Windsor leather. There’s stacks of room up front and the rear will accommodate three passengers. Boot space is also good with the 623 litres rising to 1,731 litres with rear seats folded flat. My test model was a Velar HSE D240 that brought the higher-powered 240ps of the two diesel engines. And I got plenty of opportunities to test out the different terrain modes. Simply turn the rotary control and you see the selected diving mode on the touchscreens. After firing up with the power button I selected grass-gravelsnow mode. This alters the calibration of the engine, transmission, allwheel drive system, suspension and stability control sys-

tems for optimum traction. The power came smoothly through the eight-speed automatic transmission and I was off and running. There was plenty of grip to take me over packed snow and icy road conditions. With a 20-way adjustment, my seat offered ideal comfort and I liked the high driving position in this mid-size SUV. In normal driving conditions this model accelerates quickly from zero to 60mph in just 6.8 seconds and is capable of reaching135mph. The auto box moved up and down the gears smoothly and responded quickly when immediate power was required. There are also paddles to make manual changes on the heated, leather steering wheel. Motorway driving was smooth and relaxing with little engine, wind or road noise coming through to the well insulated cabin. Ride quality was good on rutted surfaces and there was little body roll when cornering. This Velar oozed quality inside and out to match its onthe-road price of £64,160. Okay, I would have been stuck like others if I had been

caught in a jammed motorway, but the luxurious Velar would have made my stay a lot more comfortable than some. I would have been pretty relaxed in my heated driver’s seat that also had massage functions. And the Meridian surround sound system 825w with 16 speakers plus subwoofer would have brought me super sounds. There are also four USB ports and three 12V power sockets for mobile charging. And an Intel quad core processor, high-speed 60GB solid-state drive and fast Ethernet network keeps you connected while on the road. It’s no surprise that the sleek Velar has been named among the top three finalists for the World Car of the Year and World Car Design titles. Winners will be announced at the New York Auto Show on March 28. It also received a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating with high levels of safety equipment including autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control with queue assist and adaptive speed limiter.

What do I really need to buy and transfer a car?

T

HERE are many people giving conflicting advice on what is ACTUALLY needed to buy a car. Here we put to bed some rumours and errors and state exactly what is required and what both the buyer and seller need to do.

We will firstly look at the seller. Obviously if selling privately then they must advertise or spread their request by word of mouth. If selling to a garage or part exchanging then this is cut out. Once a buyer is found then the whole process starts. For selling to an individual you will need a copy of their NIE/ RESIDENCIA or DNI (just a copy in this case), if the person only holds a NIE or Residencia then a copy of an in-date passport is also required. If the passport is out of date then an up to date copy must be obtained. The forms that must be signed by the seller are the contrato de compra-venta and the application form for Tráfico (solicitud de transmisión de vehículo). The seller should also provide proof that the current years road taxes (RODAJE or Impuesto de tración de mecánica) have been paid as this information may sometimes not have reached Tráfico and if it is shown as unpaid a transfer cannot be completed. Town Halls now as a matter of course advise Tráfico of outstanding road taxes, this is a way of getting their money as it effectively blocks a transfer until such time as that debt is cleared. A simple check first can make this a hassle-free process. The purchaser must have an NIE to complete the transfer but some garages MAY allow the purchase on a passport number provided an NIE is being applied for swiftly. The buyer will

need to sign the contrato de compra-venta, the solicitud de transmisión de vehículo, the Modelo 620 and an authorization for Hacienda; and if someone else is doing the transfer on their behalf also an authorization for Tráfico. They will have to supply copies of their documents for the tax and the ORIGINALS for Tráfico, i.e. Passport, NIE/RESIDENCIA/DNI. Tráfico DO NOT AND WILL NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES accept photocopies for the buyer BUT Notarised copies are accepted. If the transfer is being undertaken by a gestoria whom is registered with the colegio de gestorias and processed via the colegio de gestorias then copies are accepted once the gestor has seen the originals. Tax is payable on all purchases, and whilst it is normally the buyer’s responsibility it is in the interest of the seller to ensure the transfer out of their name is completed and often the cost is split. The current rate of tax is 5.5% of the official valuation which often has no bearing whatsoever on the price being paid. You can find the official valuation at www.aeat.es. which is partly available in English or by calling 012 and asking. In order to obtain an accurate valuation, you will need the exact make, model, the number of doors, original date of first registration together with potencia fiscal and engine size, all of which is normally available on the cars Ficha Técnica.

If a car is over 10 years old then the rules are slightly different and fixed taxes apply. Cars 0-1000cc tax due is 40€ 1001-1500 cc tax due is 70€ 1501-2000cc tax due is 115€ If the car is over ten years of age and the engine is bigger that a 2000 cc (i.e. 2 ltr) then the normal rules apply. Before buying a car privately it is important to check that there are no embargo’s or debts on the car and Motorworld are able to do this for you as are other legally registered companies. If you do not do this and find at Tráfico there is an embargo on the car, it can be very difficult to sort out and sometimes is not cost effective to do so, rendering the car worthless and unsaleable. When using the services of someone to do this for you they must be a Registered Tráfico Collaborator or Gestoria registered with the colegio de gestorias.

KEEPING FIT

Striking the right balance with your horse’s activity Most horses and ponies will benefit from being kept fit by taking part in an activity that they are suited to and trained for

W

HETHER leisure hacking at the weekend, fun rides, or more intensive training for equestrian competitions, regular exercise helps to maintain a good physical condition, promotes a healthy heart and lungs and stimulates an active mind. By working together on fitness and training, both rider and horse can benefit from an understanding relationship with mutual benefits.

General considerations Whether it be hacking at the weekends or competing regularly, it is important to take into account the natural abilities of the horse as well as the rider’s own abilities and ambitions. Consideration should be given to what the horse is good at and enjoys, as well as what it is physically capable of achieving. All horses and ponies should be kept sufficiently active to maintain their health and well-being. New horse keepers need to be realistic about the demands they may make on the horse and ensure it has a sufficient level of fitness and training to be healthy and happy, without becoming too demanding or difficult for a novice rider to manage.

Preparing for work Before embarking on a new exercise or training programme, it is advisable for the horse to have a thorough veterinary health check to confirm that it is sound and healthy, especially if the horse has been out of work for some time. If a horse is unshod and will be doing a lot of roadwork, it will probably need to be shod in the future. Whether shod or unshod, horses in work require more frequent hoof care by a farrier to ensure good foot balance and reduce the likelihood of hoof problems. A professional saddle fitter should be engaged to check that the saddle fits well and the rider should be prepared to have this re-checked once the horse becomes fitter, since many horses will change shape once they are in work. All tack should be checked for safety and fit; leather and stitching can soon perish if it has not been looked after correctly. Badly-fitting tack can cause behavioural problems in a horse as a response to pain or discomfort, as well as actual physical injuries. If a horse shows an aversion to being caught or tacked up or behaved differently when worked, this may indicate a tackfitting or ridden problem. A rider that is unbalanced in the saddle – sits heavily or crookedly – can affect the balance of the saddle and cause the horse discomfort. It is equally important that riders improve their own level of fitness and riding skills.

Progressive fitness

Each horse is an individual and will need to be managed as such. A fitness programme and ongoing training must be tailored to meet the needs of the horse and rider. The key to any fitness programme is to start with little and often, gradually increasing the level of work and, if necessary, adapting the horse’s care and feeding accordingly. Horses being ridden for non-competitive pleasure and leisure activities may not require any significant change in their management, as long as the horse has a routine to which it is suited. In other words, if a horse is happy living out with shelter and adequate grazing, this may not need to be changed. It is helpful to record the horse’s achievements in a diary so that its progress can be monitored, noting whether a horse felt tired or gave the impression that it had plenty of energy. The diary can be used to record any setbacks or gains or when plans could not be carried out due to unforeseen circumstances. All aspects of a horse’s health should be recorded and a weigh tape should also be used regularly to monitor the horse’s weight. Check the horse’s skin carefully where the tack touches it, since unfit horses will be unused to wearing tack and may get sores and rubs very easily. If left undetected, minor signs may soon become a significant problem.

wearing knee boots, especially when engaging in roadwork. It is important to remember that an unfit horse is more likely to brush (strike one leg with another), so brushing boots are advisable to protect the legs from injury.

Training on the ground

It is important to train a horse to be good to handle and lead inhand. This will help when you receive visits from the farrier and the vet, and is important to practice for loading into a horsebox or trailer. This training is achieved through consistent and considerate handling. Plan to spend time with the horse when it is not being ridden. It is particularly important to spend time grooming the horse, which will help with its training because it will be expected to stand still and move over when asked.

Lunging

Lunging is useful for exercising and training a horse, and can be beneficial in teaching the horse balance, suppleness and responsiveness. It is also useful in the winter when the weather is bad or it is too dark to hack out. Incorrect or excessive lunging can create problems both physically and mentally and must be approached considerately following appropriate instruction.

Long-reining

Riders and horses should always wear fluorescent high visibility clothes when hacking out on the roads. Horses may benefit from

Need to get your much-loved pet to or from Tenerife to the UK? Worried about the journey?

Long-reining is a good way of developing balance, confidence and obedience in a horse. A greater level of skills is required of the handler to ensure safety, and consequently long-reining should only be used following appropriate training and risk assessment of the reactiveness of the horse.

Ridden training

Regular lessons from an instructor will benefit both horse and rider, helping to improve riding skills and develop a range of activities and exercises that can be incorporated into individual schooling sessions. The best riders in the world have trainers who help them to improve both their riding and the horse’s way of going. It is always helpful to get another opinion on how the horse is working to ensure correctness is achieved.

The benefits of having a well-schooled horse, even for the less ambitious rider, are immense. The horse will have improved balance, suppleness and obedience and be a more pleasurable ride. If the rider is confident and balanced, and the horse understands the ridden aids well, the partnership will become mutually beneficial. Ideally, schooling lessons should be embarked upon only when both horse and rider are fit enough. Working correctly in the school can be strenuous exercise for both horse and rider, requiring a high degree of concentration and a good level of physical ability.

Cuesta de la Villa

A great part of the fun of wining and dining in Tenerife is finding somewhere different and it’s well worth a trip out to Santa Ursula to the warm and inviting Donde Mario. Though from the outside you might easily pass by it, the inside is elegant and captivating. Restaurateur Mario Torres surprises us every day with his extensive use of produce in season, and his unbeatable experience with wines and cookery. Just try his Cherne warm salad, a super-healthy Canarian fish soup, or his Lomo de Vaca Morucha. You will be captivated.

Set in a series of old Canary houses, this restaurant is made up of a labyrinth of inter-connecting rooms leading off from the bar area in the centre. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an English country pub with its low ceilings with wooden beams and warm décor. The food is fundamentally Canarian. They grow most of their own produce at their allotment and only use olive oil to cook with. Their ethos is a simple one, only use the best, fresh produce and cook it with thought and care. The menu is described as Picoteo, slightly more than tapas without reaching the full-blown three-course meal status. It is delicious and affordable. “La Bodeguita de Enfrente” won the “II Gastronomic Awards Cruzcampo Gran Reserva El Día-Mesa Abierta”, which took place last year.

Why not try a touch of “picoteo”, the Spanish-style of eating where, as the name suggests, you pick a selection of dishes and share with your companions. You will find “El Calderito de la Abuela” in Santa Úrsula and it offers a unique and homely atmosphere combining Canary cuisine with modern creativity. In 2016, “El Calderito de la Abuela” won the “Best Canarian Kitchen Restaurant Award” in the first edition of the “El Dia-Mesa Abierta” Awards on July 28th. The exterior of this property belies what you will find inside as it is full of charm and carácter and there is an incredible view of La Orotava valley. “A gem” is how it is described.

EASTER EXHIBITION

HE avocado is taking centre-stage in La Orotava and there are opportunities to taste how it can be enjoyed in wonderful dishes.

Eighteen establishments have been taking part in a tapas route in which the avocado is the star and this continues until March 23rd. To follow, on April 20th there will be an Avocado Fair, the first of its kind to be held in Tenerife, with the Plaza de la Constitución being the venue for the afternoon event. The gastronomic route proving a great success is the second one held under the umbrella of Saborea La Orotava. The 18 restaurants, bars and cafes have produced extraordinary dishes featuring

avocado as the main ingredient. “Because of its flavour, its variety and its versatility, it allows the chef to create a wide variety of dishes, providing quality levels and superlative flavours,” one of the organisers explained. Savoury and sweet dishes are on offer for 2.50 euros (does not include a drink). Customers will help to choose the best three dishes and the winning establishments will be part of the Avocado Fair. Those who fill in the score cards at six restaurants or more will also be entered into a prize raffle. All the information on this new

gastronomic route can be found on the website saborealaorotava.es The events are designed to introduce more residents and

visitors to local gastronomy, to boost economic activity and to show people the delights historic La Orotava has to offer.

REGISTRATIONS INVITED

Get to know the real Tenerife with 2018 Walking Festival

T

ENERIFE Walking Festival will take place from May 22th to 26th and registration is still open for all nationalities.

This is an open event for hikers from all over the continent, combining different types of hikes and trails and original supplementar y activities. You can come with a group, your family or on your own. Tenerife Walking Festival is organised by Tenerife Cabildo, Tourism of Tenerife, the European Ramblers’ Association, Spanish Mountain Sports and Climbing Federation and FECAMON (Canar y Islands Mountaineering Federation). All routes will depart from Puerto de la Cruz town centre, usually at 8.30am unless the event has a specific starting time. The official languages of the Tenerife Walking Festival are Spanish, English, German and French. The groups will have a

maximum of 25 people and a minimum of 20. In case there are less than ten people, the organisation reserves the right to relocate participants to another route or cancel it. You can register on the Tenerife Walking Festival by completing the registration form on www.tenerifewalkingfestival.com where you will find all further information. Registration costs 30€ per person, plus the cost of each individual walk (you must choose three). The fee incudes a welcome back, daily transport, expert guides and a discount bracelet to be used in participating local shops, museums and restaurants in Puerto de la Cruz and the rest of the island. Registration also includes guided visit to some points of interest in Puerto de la Cruz, ie the Lago Martiánez – following

César Manrique’s footprints – at 9am on Sunday, May 27th and a Puerto de la Cruz garden visit from 11.30am on the same day. These are free. With the environment very much in mind, the Tenerife Walking Festival is an event which fully understands that climate change is one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century. “We therefore operate an ecological footprint which allows us to calculate human pressure on the planet and come up with results on how our activity affects our environment,” a spokesman explaained. “Once we have the results, we will organise a tree plantation, using endemic species, with the objective to reach the zerofootprint.” The Tenerife Walking Festival will also feature some conferences about nature and hiking. In all, there will be five

coastal hikes, 12 volcanic routes and five forest hikes. As an example, one of them takes in Afur – Taganana (FRI-2) on May 25th. It is over a distance of eight kilometres and will take about four and a half hours, with a total ascent of 550 metres and a descent of 600 metres. This is a wine trail, showcasting the beauty of Afur which lies on the edge of a rock and is comprised of cave dwellings and small thatched-roof stone houses. It is one of the most remote and beautiful corners in Tenerife. Then, the trail goes by the coastline and reaches the hamlet of Chorro, with traces of ancient civilisations, wineyards, presses and wine cellars for the production of the local wine. Later, in the village of Taganana, walkers will taste and experience this wine’s unique flavour and colour.

I

F you are in Icod de los Vinos over Easter or would like to plan a visit, don’t miss a spectacular art show dedicated to the life of Christ and the procession of the cross.

The “Sociedad Centro Icodense” is hosting up until April 2nd, the 20th edition of the exhibition “Arte sacro” by the Laguna artist Santi González Arbelo. On this occasion, Sacred Art 2018 offers scenes of the Via Crucis in miniature of the Passion and death of Jesus of Nazareth, with landscapes and scenes of his life and death. The exhibition is completed with some pictures related to Easter, in the same room, and more dedicated to the image of Mary with her pain for the death of her son, Jesus. Santi is also staging a show dedicated to the Virgen de los Dolores in the town and port of Garachico, also under the umbrella of ArteSacro 2018.

The Mayor of La Orotava, Francisco Linares and the historian Nicolás González Lemus presented the programme of events commemorating this anniversary, which will take place between April and May. On April 20th, there will be the opening of the exhibition The Beatles in Tenerife, which will show photographs, vinyl, objects, paintings and original drawings. This exhibition, by José Javier Hernández, will remain until May 20th at the Casa de Cultura San Agustín, from 9am to 9pm, Monday through to Friday. On Saturday April 21th, there will be a Beatles’ concert

in the courtyard of the aforementioned House of Culture, from 8pm, by the group Alma de Goma. Admission will be free but the first 100 attendees will be entered into a raffle for ‘The Beatles in Spain’ containing DVD, two CDs, a book and eight exclusive photographs of the Beatles in Spain. The town hall will host on May 4th, from 8pm, a round table on ‘The Beatles in Tenerife and its footprint’, and will feature Mayor Francisco Linares; Antonio Reyes, Santiago Ríos, Martín Rivero, José Javier Hernández and Nicolás González Lemus. This same space hosts on May 7th, at 8pm, the screening of the documentary ¡Qué los Beatles a España! (1965) by the author Magi Crusells. On May 17th, the comic ‘Las vacations de los Beatles en Canarias’ is presented, with texts by Nicolás González Lemus and illustrations by Roberto Rodríguez. It will also be presented in the plenary hall of the City Council of La Orotava, at 8pm.

OS Realejos has been presenting details of its environmental programme “Actúa Verde’” with more than 50 green activities in 2018.

“For the seventh consecutive year, we renew our commitment to the environment through this offer of activities to raise awareness and to promote the municipality for its outdoor activities, putting people in touch with nature, and also encouraging nature tourism,” said the Mayor, Manuel Dominguez. New events are still being added to the packed programme but it kicks off with the nature photography contest “Fotonatura 2018” which has an entry closing date of May 31st. The municipality’s nature classroom will also be hosting a range of activities including field studies and visits to natural landscapes. “The natural wealth of a municipality that has six protected areas in its 52 square kilometres of territory is beyond doubt,” said Sr. Domínguez “but every effort

will be made to promote better knowledge, conservation and respect to ensure their future.” The Rambla de Castro Nature Classroom has the international qualification of Centro Azul for the promotion of awareness, defence and dissemination activities of natural environments, achieving

this award consecutively in the last two years. The programming of “Actúa Verde 2018” is already hosted on the municipal website www.losrealejos.es and www.aularambladecastro.es. Highlights include a guided walk along the Camino Real de la Costa (Los Realejos - San Juan de la Rambla) on Saturday,

April 28th, a nocturnal route through the Protected Landscape of Rambla de Castro on June 2nd, seeing the stars in Mount Teide National Park on June 16th, a summer camp at the Albergue de Bolico on August 10th, 11th and 12th and a visit to the Cave of the Winds in Icod de los Vinos on October 20th.

“Shower of coloured stars” prepares to rain on May festivities

M

POSTER UNVEILED

AY, when colourful stars rain” is the title of the illustration created by the artist Nareme Melián as a poster for the May Festival of Los Realejos in 2018.

The work was presented by the author himself with the Mayor , Manuel Domínguez, the councillor of fiestas, Isabel Socorro, and the representatives of the Municipal Council for Children and Adolescents of Los Realejos, Irene Herrera Rodríguez and Jesús Javier Díaz Silvero, schoolchildren of CEIP La Montañeta. “Today we have the presence of these little ambassadors of our child friendly municipality, Irene and Jesus Javier, because precisely the childhood and the generational change of the royal traditions are protagonists of the poster of this edition of the festivities, “ said the Mayor. “These children who appear in the illustration represent in some way the fortune that we have in Los Realejos for the continuity and the guarantee of present and future of a cultural heritage that identifies us and differentiates us. “ Isabel Socorro said that “in this edition we wanted to represent the contrast between day and night of two of the most important moments of the May Festivals, such as the pyrotechnic exhibition on May 3rd and the light explosion of the Pilgrimage of San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza, which this year will be celebrated on May 27th, with the carts as protagonists and the colour of that long holiday. “ Nareme Melián gave details about the technique of making his work, “initially created in pencil and then scanned to culminate with the work of digitisation and editing with a specialised design programme.” He also noted that the first inspiration came from his own memories of childhood, a time when he saw the tradition of Cruces y Fuegos “like a shower of coloured stars.” Other events include the selection of the Gala queen on on May 12th, the Romeria on May 15th, the Baile de Magos on May 19th and on May 26th, the Cattle Fair and the Festival of the Islands.

Laser Iridectomy for narrow angle or angle closure glaucoma or risk of glaucoma

T

HIS article contains the information about the reasons, conditions, results, risks and limitations of the laser iridectomy as a treatment for narrow angle or angle closure glaucoma or risk of glaucoma.

WHY LASER THERAPY? The angle between the cornea and iris is the area where the liquid produced in the eye (the aqueous) is evacuated. If this angle is closed, this liquid is not drained properly. This leads to an increase of the pressure inside the eye that damages the nerve fibres of the retina and the optic nerve. This condition may occur in some hours of time. Pain and loss of vision, often irreversible and sometimes an anatomical disorganisation of the eye may follow. The laser iridectomy is the most appropriate way to prevent this condition.

THE LASER TREATMENT The laser beam uses a light capable of carrying a large amount of energy that is delivered to a specific area of the iris in order to create a hole allowing a recirculation of the aqueous that widens the angle. The session is performed on an outpatient basis. Anesthesia of the eye is obtained by the instillation of anesthetic drops. The patient sits in front of the laser engine. Laser impacts are applied through a lens placed on the eye. The whole procedure time does not exceed ten minutes per session. It is

painless. The treatment is carried out in one or two sessions spaced by several days to several weeks.

USUAL COURSE In the vast majority of cases, treatment is well tolerated. The patients leaves the Eye Clinic immediately after treatment and resumes usual activities. The eye care is reduced to the instillation of drops and / or taking pills as indicated by the ophthalmologist. In most cases, a durable or permanent opening of the angle is achieved. The success rate is very high. Controls will be necessary at dates proposed by the ophthalmologist.

COMPLICATIONS OF THE TREATMENT

The non serious complications are: Dazzle, due to the microscope light, can be felt throughout the examination. Conjunctival bleeding due to the contact lens: rare, benign, disappears in few days. Arterial hypotension may occur in susceptible individuals. It will quickly

disappear when lying down. Irritation of the cornea (superficial keratitis): It is a rare hazard, occurring in less than 1% of the cases. Promptly treated, it cures generally in 24 to 72 hours. Moderate elevation of the eye pressure: it is frequent and systematically preventively treated. Iris bleeding: It is a frequent, unpredictable, always transient, hazard. It may cause a visual veil during a few hours. These incidents are of no concern. If the patient is prone to arterial hypotension, it is necessary to get the ophthalmologist informed. Severe complications of this type of laser photocoagulation are so exceptional that they are neither predictable nor quantifiable. Severe elevation of the eye pressure: rare, may cause blurry vision, eye pain, headache. If treated promptly, within the hours of the beginning of the symptoms, it resolves rapidly without sequels. Macular oedema: It is a distant reaction to laser impacts that leads to the accumulation of water in the centre of the retina. It may be responsible of a loss of details vision, lasting a few weeks to several months, sometimes permanently. Although rare, it is systematically preventively treated. Retinal detachment. It is a very rare distant reaction to the impacts. It requires delicate

surgery of replacement of the retina. Misplaced impact, reaching the middle of the centre of the crystalline lens or the retina. This incident can permanently reduce detail vision. It is extremely rare and occurs in restless, undisciplined patients who do not control their eye movements and their bodies. To avoid this, the patient is asked to keep the most calm and compliance during this examination.

LIMITATIONS OF TREATMENT This treatment is less effective if the irido-corneal angle is scarred due to previous crises of angle closure that can sometimes go unnoticed.

Like any living tissue, the irido-corneal angle can react in a variable way, immediately, months or years, after the treatment. This treatment cannot therefore claim to prevent, neither categorically nor permanently further increases of intraocular pressure, especially if other causes of ocular hypertension (vitreous or lens swelling, trabecular meshwork resistance etc.), are involved Laser iridectomy does not preclude the use of eye drops nor surgery in the management of glaucoma.

THE PATIENT SHOULD CONTACT AN EYE DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY IN CASE OF

Pain, severe sensitivity to light, redness, tearing, secretions, swelling of the eyes or eyelids Sharp decrease of the vision. Perception of floaters with flashes of lightning, a black rain or a motionless large dark spot.

By courtesy of Dr. SAFFIEDINE, ophthalmologist in Playa De Las Americas.

Artedental takes leading role Why we should sit less at largest dental fair in Spain

W

E all know we need to be more active but there is increasing evidence that we also need to spend less time sitting down.

To reduce our risk of ill health from inactivity, we are advised to exercise regularly – at least 150 minutes a week – and reduce sitting time. Studies have linked excessive sitting with being overweight and obese, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, and early death. Sitting for long periods is thought to slow the metabolism, which affects the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, blood pressure and break down body fat. Many adults in the UK spend more than seven hours a day sitting or lying, and this typically increases with age to ten hours or more. This includes watching TV, using a computer, reading, doing homework, travelling by car, bus or train but does not include sleeping.

Under-5s

In children under five, the advice is to limit the time they spend watching TV, travelling by car, bus or train, or being strapped into a buggy. While this may be a challenge for busy parents, the advice reflects growing awareness that early life experiences and habits impact upon our health as adults.

Children and young people

Research suggests that children and young people in households with multiple TVs and computers tend to sit more. For children aged 5 to 18 years, reducing sitting time includes anything that involves moving in and around the home, classroom or community.

Adults

Adults aged 19 to 64 are advised to try to sit down less throughout the day, including at work, when travelling and at home.

Older adults

Some older adults (aged 65 and over) are known to spend 10 hours or more each day sitting or lying down, making them the most sedentary population group.

What are the risks of DVT?

D

EEP vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that develops within a deep vein in the body, usually in the leg.

It can cause pain and swelling in the leg and may lead to complications such as pulmonary embolism. This is a serious condition that occurs when a piece of blood clot breaks off into the bloodstream and blocks one of the blood vessels in the lungs. In some cases, there may be no symptoms of DVT. If symptoms do occur they can include pain, swelling and tenderness in one of your legs (usually your calf), a heavy ache in the affected area, warm skin in the area of the clot and red skin, particularly at the back of your leg below the knee. DVT usually (although not

always) affects one leg. The pain may be worse when you bend your foot upward towards your knee. If left untreated, about one in ten people with a DVT will develop a pulmonary embolism. This can cause breathlessness which may come on gradually or suddenly, chest pain which may become worse when you breathe in and sudden collapse. Both DVT and pulmonary embolism require urgent investigation and treatment. Seek immediate medical attention if you have pain, swelling and tenderness in your leg, and you develop breathlessness and chest pain.

J

UST like the British Dental Conference or the Euro Dental Congress, Expodental stands as one of the most prestigious meetings on the continent between professionals in the dental sector.

The exhibition celebrated its 14th edition this year between March 15th and 17th. Located in the Ifema fairgrounds in Madrid, it focused on the sample of new technologies, training, techniques and innovative treatments for a sector that grows above GDP and occupies nine per cent of healthcare technology, according to the Spanish Federation of Healthcare Sanitary Technology, Fenin, organised by Expodental hand in hand with Ifema. A meeting to discuss and learn among the dental elite. The figures speak for themselves: more than 22,000 square metres occupied by 349 companies around the world representing 1,458 trademarks. The professionals were able to witness the latest launches in design for clinics and laboratories, machinery, or attend conferences of high-level professionals, since training is one of the most significant focuses of Expodental this 2018. For yet another edition, several members of the Tenerife Artedental clinic team were present at the fair, and not only as observers. The centre’s medical

Tenerife surgeon Víctor Cubillo presented a treatment that allows improving the longevity of the implant, one of the biggest challenges to be overcome by the industry.

director, Víctor Cubillo, held a conference for the Ziacom international implant home entitled Partial Teeth Extraction, an innovative solution for postextraction implants. This treatment consists of keeping part of the tooth to be extracted to preserve the vascularization of the bone, so that it improves the longevity of the implant, one of the biggest challenges to be overcome by the industry. The Artedental surgeon showed several successful cases achieved through this

technique in his clinic in Puerto de la Cruz before the other professionals. It is not the first time that the director of Artedental attended the fair as a guest to be part of its circle of speakers. The constant dedication of the clinic to research meant it had the privilege of sharing the stage with some of the most prestigious professionals in Spain. This year, the Canary Islands was the invited community. The intention was to increase the number of visitors to the islands

that the fair receives each year. In the words of the president of the Dental Sector of Fenin, Juan Molina, “it was an honour to have the Canary Islands as a guest CCAA at Expodental 2018. It represents the consolidation of relationships between industry and professionals with the aim of encouraging their participation in the next edition of the fair and thus have the opportunity to know the technological innovations presented by companies in the sector, always in favour of the dental professional”.

Huge boost for karting as Tenerife announces new children’s competitions T T

ENERIFE Cabildo and the Interinsular Federation of Motoring of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will develop this year the Initiation Cup and the Tenerife Promotion Trophy 2030 with the aim of promoting the sport of karting in young people from seven to eleven years.

The competition has the collaboration of the Karting Club Tenerife (Arona) and includes training activities related to road safety, values and behaviour of the athlete and skills development. The adviser of the area Tenerife 2030, Antonio García Marichal, the Sports Minister, Cristo Pérez, and the president of the FIASCT, Benito Rodríguez, visited the facilities of the Karting Club Tenerife where the events will be held. Antonio García Marichal points out that “from the Tenerife 2030 area we are betting on the training of young people in different aspects, from inno-vation to entrepreneurship, through sports. It is about children learning from the earliest ages aspects related to road safety, while develop-ing their skills at the controls of a kart.” Cristo Pérez indicated that this initiative “supposes a support for the work of the quarry and is an important step for the motoring of the island. It is necessary to thank the support of the area Tenerife 2030, which is involved in aspects related to sport and the young.” For his part, Benito Rodríguez said that “the Federation is betting on promoting the sport among the youngest and we

have good support in the Cabildo. We have made an effort to take this project forward and we are convinced that it will be a success because it is a good opportunity to attract many who have not had the opportunity to start still in motor racing”. The Tenerife 2030 Initiation Cup is aimed at young boys and girls (from seven to nine years old) who have never participated in races and with little or no training in the development of skills at the wheel. A minimum of six students and a maximum of 12 students have been established, who will receive the training for seven months -with sessions of two hours every 15 days- at the facilities of the Karting Club Tenerife. The agenda includes aspects such as road safety, values and behaviour of the athlete, knowledge of the operation of a kart and what they are for, description of the different types of curves and their routes, development of skills, individualised deve-

lopment and implementation in the track of the circuit of acquired knowledge. Thus, two races will be held in the months of September and November to check the evolution of the participants. The Tenerife Promotion Trophy 2030 is aimed at children aged seven to eleven years with knowledge and skills in driving that need

to continue developing and acquiring experience in this modality. The objective is to have a group of ten to 15 students in the categories alevín and cadet. The participants will have access to the training part mentioned above, while the practical part will be developed in the training sessions and in the four races that make up the trophy.

THREE DISTANCES

HE final touches are being put to the organisation of the popular Las Galletas Half Marathon on Sunday, April 8th.

There is still time to enter but to take advantage of a discounted registration price, get your running boots on. Athletes can still access the lower price of five euros for the 5km test, 13 euros for the distance of 10.8km and 18 euros for the 21km. From March 26th, prices will be ten euros for the distance of five kilometres, 20 euros for the test of 10.8km and 25 euros for participants in the 21 km. For federated runners or with a corridor plus card, there are special prices. Those interested can go to the web (www.mediomaratonlasgalletas.com) or the Municipal Sports Pavilion of Los Cristianos to register. The new feature for this edition is the five kilometre distance as the organisers want to expand the participation of runners who are starting in this athletic discipline. For this, Arona’s sports board, as the organisers, has provided training sessions free of charge for anyone who

wants to prepare in any of the distances. These are being held in the Antonio Dominguez stadium in Playa de Las Americas. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday in the afternoon (4pm to 9pm) and on Tuesday and Friday mornings (8am to 10pm) with a personal trainer who will advise you on how to prepare. The race takes place in and around Las Galletas. The circuit will be closed to traffic, so the Municipal Sports Board of Arona recommends that people living in the area of Las Galletas, Las Rosas, La Estrella and especially El Fraile take note of the closing hours, which are scheduled to take place from 8.30am to 11.30am in the morning. Plans are also taking shape for the Sports Fair, which will take place the day before the event, on Saturday, April 7th from 10am to 8pm along avenida Las Galletas, where the dorsal can be collected, together with the runner’s bag.

Tatami mat boosts facilities for new fight club

E

L Rosario’s sports department has acquired a specific tatami mat for the development of the Canarian fighting or “lucha”.

It is being installed in the pavilion “José Martín Martín” of Lomo Pelado, meeting point for the new Canary team of the municipality: CD Berros Esperanza. Councillor for sports, Ivan

Armas, and the president of the fight club, Jacinto Díaz, visited the works of installation and marking of the tatami. Sr. Armas said that “after the creation of a new Canarian wrestling team in the

municipality and in order to facilitate the competition and training of the same, it was convenient to acquire a tatami approved for the practise of this sport in which we have Invested around 7,500 euros. “ He said the current team is fighting in a sports hall in which other disciplines are

practiced daily, such as indoor football, and the arena and sand had to be cleared on every occasion. This measure is intended to facilitate the competitions and training of this native sport, which currently has two representatives at the local level.

HERE are already more than 300 people enrolled in the 19th edition of the forthcoming La Laguna Media Marathon.

The event is being organised by the autonomous sports organisation of Aguere council and takes place on Sunday, April 29th. Registrations have already exceeded a third of the people who participated in the last edition, which suggests an increase in runners for this XIX Media Marathon. The test repeats the new circuit planned by the council, which was approved by the judges of the Royal Federation of Athletics (RFEA). Both the departure and arrival point of the test, which repeats the successful format of the three races of 5,000, 10,000 and 21,097 metres, will be in the Plaza de la Catedral. The closing date for enrollment is on Wednesday, April 25th. It should be noted that in this edition 2,000 places are available. The interested people can register online at the website www.deportelagunero.com or in person at the offices of the OAD itself from Monday to Friday from 9pm to 2pm. The fee is eight euros for the 5,000 and 10,000 metres and 16 euros for the 21,097 metres race. The latter will offer prizes of between 700 and 100 euros for the first ten people who cross the finishing line, both in the female category and in the masculine

New soccer surface for first time in 15 years

EL ROSARIO

Y

OUNG soccer fans have a special reason to welcome work currently taking place at the municipal field of “Maximino Bacallado” in El Rosario. For the first time in 15 years, the surface is being renewed with artificial grass of the latest generation and approved by FIFA. Sports councillor, Iván Armas and the president of the CDZ Esperanza, Juan Manuel Yanes visited the site to see how work is progressing. The project has been funded equally by Tenerife Cabildo and El Rosario council with an investment of nearly 150,000 euros. It is expected to be completed during the month

of April. Sr. Armas emphasised the importance of this action to avoid possible injuries during the matches, both of the first team members and their opponents, as well as the boys and girls from the lower classes of the club. During the work, the first team will play its matches at El Tablero. The council says it appreciates the involvement of the Cabildo as by itself, it could not have met the cost.

Magnificent six for Los Realejos sports’ venues

CANARY CHAMPIONSHIPS

T

HE Basilio Labrador complex and the Iván Ramallo stadium in Los Realejos are hosting six Canary Islands’ championships between March and June.

The elite of table tennis, handball, basketball, athletics, indoor soccer and climbing will be competing for various titles. The Mayor of Los Realejos, Manuel Domínguez said they were delighted with the success of the athletes and proud to be hosting the competitions. He said it was another sign that “sport is unquestionably linked to tourism, because this will cause teams or individual sportsmen from other islands to come to this region of Tenerife and also boost the local economy.” The Canary Islands’ Table Tennis Championships were held between March 16th and 18th to set the sequence of six rolling. The same venue will host the Canary Islands Handball Championship from April 13th to 15th and, from April 19th to 22nd, the Men’s Basketball Championship of the Canary Islands. From May 24th to 27th, the Canary Islands’ Women’s Soccer Championship will take place in the pavilion while on June 23rd, in the same sports complex but on its climbing wall, the Canary Islands’ Climbing Championship comes to an end. The Iván Ramallo Stadium will be the headquarters of the Canary Islands’ Athletics Championships on May 26th and 27th.

THE CHILD FIONA BARTON

A Richard and Judy Spring Collection choice

When a paragraph in an evening newspaper reveals a decadesold tragedy, most readers barely give it a glance. But for three strangers, it’s impossible to ignore. For one woman, it’s a reminder of the worst thing that ever happened to her. For another, it reveals the dangerous possibility that her darkest secret is about to be discovered. And for the third, a journalist, it’s the first clue in a hunt to uncover the truth. The child’s story will be told.

The baby is named Cyril by his adoptive parents, Charles and Maude Avery, a well-to-do, but deeply eccentric couple who, treat him more like a curiosity than a son. Through them he meets Julian Woodbead who, even from childhood, seems destined for a more infinitely more glamorous and dangerous life. And so begins one man’s funny and moving search to find his place in the world that seems to delight in tormenting him at every turn. Cyril must navigate his emotions and desires in a search for that most elemental human need, happiness.

Owning Spanish property via an international company could be a tax problem waiting to explode

Photo: Footer.com

I

NTERNATIONAL company structures established in decades gone by to help wealthy owners of property in Spain avoid tax are now a ticking time-bomb for some, as the Spanish tax authorities set their sights on them. “International company structures, with some owned by double or triple vehicles involving a Spanish company belonging to a foreign company and, in many cases, a Trust on top, were the arrangement of choice recommended by leading international tax advisory firms to wealthy investors from the 70s to the 2000s,” explains Fernando Del Canto. “Needless to say, those same firms would rather not talk about the problem today.” His firm, crossborder tax specialists Del Canto Chambers with offices in London and Madrid, estimate that more than 5,000 private properties in Spain are owned using international company structures. International company structures were set up to avoid or minimise tax in Spain, and facilitate change of ownership / inheritance. It goes without saying that most of the properties owned through a company structure are worth a million Euro or more, in most cases two or three million Euro and up. Company structures come at a cost, so the potential tax savings have to be significant for the structure to make financial sense. If international company structures are used to avoid taxes on a valuable asset, that obviously makes them interesting to the tax inspector. With public finances under pressure, Spain is looking hard at tax avoidance schemes, just like other Western countries, and high value properties owned by international companies are

thought to be a prime target for the Spanish tax authorities, who Del Canto says are high-handed and difficult to deal with. “Spanish tax inspectors shoot first and ask questions later,” explains Del Canto. “They are investigating these structures in places like the Costa del Sol, and I’ve even seen them stake out luxury resorts like Sotogrande to get evidence of undeclared rentals. They issue heavy penalties on disputable grounds, and hope that wealthy foreigners will pay up without a fight. Wealthy foreigners with valuable assets in Spain can be seen as soft targets.” If you own a property in Spain via an international company structure set up in decades gone by, you should consider getting a tax compliance check-up done to see what kinds of risks, if any, you are running. You don’t want to wait until the bomb explodes with a tax inspection. The best defence is to be well prepared, and a well-prepared response guided by experts will send a strong message to the tax authorities that you are not a soft target, which is half the battle. Del Canto Chambers, with offices in Madrid and London, are cross-border Spanish and international tax specialists with unique experience in sorting out, or heading off, tax liabilities for highvalue properties in Spain. Owning Spanish property through a company structure could be a tax timebomb waiting to explode, so get a tax compliance check-up as soon as possible
