Cabildo calls for “calm” debate

A

forest blaze which devastated more than 350 hectares of beautiful countryside in the mountains of Tenerife has heightened calls for more aerial fire fighting resources. Cabildo president, Carlos

Alonso said all parties should

get together to discuss calmly and without argument whether there should be a permanent air base to combat fires throughout the entire year. He is also advocating

increasing the five-strong helicopter fleet as opposed to seaplanes as they adapt better to the topography of the archipelago. Sr. Alonso said all the

Two women stabbed in Los Cristianos

IVE people were injured, three of them seriously, in a frontal collision between two vehicles on the TF-46 in Guia de Isora on Sunday.

Those hurt included two children, aged six and seven, who suffered serious injuries. A woman was also rushed to hospital in a serious condition and two men sustained injuries described as “moderate”. Firemen rushed to the scene, together with medics, the police, Civil Guard and the emergency helicopter, and had to release four of the victims from the wreckage of the cars which were very badly damaged because of the severe impact. The fronts of both vehicles were crushed. The accident happened at 8.15am in the morning and caused major tailbacks whilst the police cleared the area for the landing of the helicopter and cleaning of the road afterwards.

The incident in Los Cristianos is understood to have been a robbery, with the thief getting away with a mobile phone and wallet. He was wearing a baseball cap and sports clothing and ran off in the direction of calle Londres and avenida Juan Carlos I. A full picture of what happened has yet to emerge as both women are in hospital in Santa Cruz. The emergency services said the woman most seriously injured was aged 70 and British. She received a stab wound in the abdomen. The other woman is aged 58 and from the Netherlands. She was stabbed in the arm and thigh. Reports suggest the 58-yearold woman was attacked as she walked down an alleyway on the way to the back door of her apartment in a residential complex on avenida Ámsterdam. It was then that the robber struck, stabbing her before stealing her belongings. The second woman was stabbed when she came to her aid.

Canarian authorities must present a united front to put the request to Spain. He believes the islands should share the resources, particularly Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro and that the number of troops should be increased outside the usual summer fire alert campaign. The fire broke out on Sunday evening, April 8th between the municipalities of Arico and Granadilla at an altitude of 2,000 metres and at one stage came close to the much-visited village of Vilaflor. Over 100 personnel were involved in the fire-fighting and although no properties were destroyed, the blaze decimated the so-called “lunar landscape”, pines and shrubs over a vast area. The Emergency Military Unit based in Gran Canaria came over to Tenerife to help control the fire, bringing with them by boat five vehicles and

the emergency helicopters dropped thousands of litres of water from the air. Hydroplanes requested from the Ministry of the Environment could not take off from the peninsula due to adverse weather conditions. Smoke was still coming from the area on Sunday, April 15th but the authorities issued a message of calm, saying it was due to the ongoing efforts to dampen the cinders. The island’s government and fire experts believe it was probably started deliberately or by neglect and a full investigation is underway. President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo congratulated all those involved in the fire-fighting in the face of the difficult weather conditions, strong wind and slope of the ravines.
