MIXED FORTUNES FOR TENERIFE AS
TOURIST ARRIVALS SLOW DOWN
T
HE Spanish market in Tenerife has grown in the first quarter of the year by 2.8 per cent driven, by the Canarian tourist, whose influx increased by 6.1 per cent. The overall data of the Receptive Tourism Statistics of the Cabildo account for a total of 2,754,286 tourists in the period, which is 0.8 per cent less than in the first half of last year. Vice president of the Cabildo and insular councillor of tourism, Alberto Bernabé, explained that the results of tourist influx of the first six months of the year show a slowdown in the rate of visitors and a decrease in the figure of international tourism of 1.8 per cent. “The recovery of competing destinations such as Turkey, Egypt or Tunisia, which are also applying a very aggressive pricing policy, together with the deviations of air capacity that some of the big tour operators are making towards these destinations to achieve a greater profit margin, are some of the factors that are causing a decrease in the tourist influx in our destination, “ he said. Sr. Bernabé also recalled the exceptional of last year, “with tourist figures constituting a hardly surpassable record”. The head of tourism policy
on the island also said that “we will keep a close watch on the evolution of our main issuer, the British market, affected by the reduction of air capacity to the island. However, there is good news such as the increase of seats of British Airways for the next winter season, which will double the capacity between Gatwick and Tenerife South and will go from having eight to 13 weekly connections “. Overnight stays accumulated up to June totalled 19,948,634 stays and decreased by 2.2 per cent compared to the same period of 2017. Regarding the issuing markets, international tourism accumulated a decrease of 1.8 per cent from January to June a global of 2,182,427 housed while the semester was positive for the national market, which increases by 2.8 per cent to reach 571,859 tourists. The British market, with 964,670 lodged, decreases in the semester by 5.1 per cent while the Germans remain stable (+0.3%) with a total of 309,724 tourists. The balance of the first six months of 2018 is also positive for the French market (+ 4.3%); Dutch
(+4.5%); Belgian (+1.5%); Irish (+15.3%); Austrian (1%);
Eastern countries (13.1%) and North American tourism
(+6.6%). The negative note of the semester is placed by the
Italian markets (-6.1%); Nordic (-3.5%) and Russian (-10.7%).
Hoteliers say concentrate on quality and don’t panic
H
OTEL and non-hotel establishments on the island of Tenerife are expected to reach an average occupancy rate of 83 per cent this summer, a figure that represents a drop of five points compared to the forecast last summer,. This is according to the occupation survey carried out periodically in these dates by Ashotel, the Hotel and Extrahotel Association of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, among more than 100,000 beds throughout the province. This fall in the forecast of hotel occupancy is directly related to the trend in the decline of tourists that has been recorded this year in the archipelago, which closed the first quarter of 2018 with minus six per cent of tourists. By areas of Tenerife, hotel and non-hotel establishments in the south of the island have the highest occupancy rates in July and August, with 85% (-5% with respect to 2017 forecasts). With regard to hotels in the north, they plan to reach 77% of their accommodation capacity during the summer season (-8%), while in the metropolitan area (Santa Cruz and La Laguna), the estimate is 61% ( -2%).
However, this slight downward trend does not occur in two of the three remaining islands of the province. La Palma, for example, which in 2017 had a forecast of 85%, for this summer grows up to 92%. Among the reasons for this growth is the closing of the reform of the Sol La Palma hotel, with some 1,000 beds, which has not been included in the survey, which increases the occupancy of the rest of the establishments. In addition, the positive influence on the behaviour of Canarian domestic tourism continues with the 75%
discount on trips by plane and ship between islands. For its part, La Gomera, which usually shows a fairly stable behaviour and high in summer with local tourism, provides an occupation of 88% (+ 2%), although as the weeks pass that occupation is higher. In fact, in August, La Gomera is at 91% right now. Finally, El Hierro, as this is not a year of Bajada de la Virgen, today moderates that forecast of occupation at 70% on average, compared to the start of last summer with the total full in the big week of the employers’ holidays. On this island, the last-minute reserve of Canaries, accustomed to deciding their vacations without advance, works much like tourists from European, German
or British emitting markets, majority in the islands. In this way, the forecast of occupation in El Hierro will grow as we go into the summer. Ashotel believes that these signs of falling tourist arrivals are not a cause for alarm, but a touch of attention to continue working for a destination where excellence and quality of service and facilities prevail. The recovery of competing destinations of the Mediterranean arc, such as Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia, direct competition from the Canary Islands in summer, is one of the most important reasons for this reduction in tourists arriving in the archipelago.

IMPROVED CONTRACT
Lifting of budget freeze allows increased cleaning for Puerto
S
TREET cleaning and rubbish collection is to be improved in Puerto de la Cruz.
Puerto council and the concessionaire of the municipality’s garbage and street cleaning collection services, the Sufi-Tarajal UTE, recently agreed to expand and modify the service contract signed between both entities. “This will allow the continued improvement of the service that has been provided in the municipality,” said a council spokesman. In this way, the concessionaire will receive an increase of 812,660.36 euros per year, 19.32 per cent more than the current price of the contract. Puerto council says it is able
to spend the money because of payment of its previous debt and the abandonment therefore of the Adjustment Plan that gripped the accounts of the municipal coffers. The Mayor, Lope Afonso said increasing the budget was vital and necessary to improve the quality and image of Puerto. The extension of the contract, the result of a process of study and search for efficiency, will involve the modification of the frequencies of urban waste collection and road cleaning. There will also be an increase in personnel, pro-

vision of machiner y and vehicles, new collection routes, in addition to an increase in the service on weekends and at night. Head of General Services, Works and Industry, Ángel
Montañés, said the increase in hotel occupancy and the consequent increase in waste generation and rubbish in public spaces was justification enough for the improvement of this contract.
MAN ARRESTED
A
22-year-old Spanish man has been arrested for peddling hashish near the city’s bullring.
He was surprised by officers when he was driving in his vehicle, which he used for the sale of the narcotic drug, in the company of another person. Once he spotted the polie, he tried to escape, throwing the drugs away. Once caught and detained, he was found with 100 euros in cash and a high-end mobile phone, together with 56 grams of hashish. The arrest is framed within the ongoing campaign for the prevention and suppression of the traffic of narcotic substances, carried out by the National Police in different areas of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Swiss woman breaks legs at viewpoint A
28-year-old Swiss woman was seriously injured as a result of an accident at a viewing point in Santa Cruz.
A full investigation will determine exactly what happened but initial reports to the 112 emergency control centre indicated part of the ceiling of a building at the Mirador de San Andrés on the Igueste de San Andrés road collapsed.
They were told the woman had been trapped by her legs under the rubble. The incident happened just before 4pm and brought the police, Canary Emergency Service and Tenerife firefighters to the scene.
The woman suffered fractures to her legs of a serious nature. A 112 spokesman confirmed: “The Coordinating Centre for Emergencies and Security (CECOES) 1-1-2 of the Government of the Canary Islands received an alert in which it was communicated that part of the roof of a building, located in the
Mirador de San Andrés, had come loose and a woman had been trapped by her legs under the rubble. Members of the Tenerife Fire Consortium secured the installation and freed the affected debris from the rubble.” The woman was treated and stabilised at the scene before being transferred in a serious condition to hospital.

THIRD LANE
Traffic relief scheme for Las Chafiras moving closer?
P
LANS to alleviate traffic congestion on the TF1 at Las Chafiras are moving one step closer to reality.
The contracting process is anticipating awarding the works of the third lane of the TF-1 on the Las ChafirasOroteanda link to the UTE Ferrovial Agroman-Ten Asphalts-Excavations Óscar del Castillo for 21,797,785 euros, the public works department has announced. The lane, designed to solve the congestion problems that occur in the Las Chafiras junction and that affect not only the link itself and its branches, but also the TF-1 motorway, will start from September if the proposal is accepted and viable. In a statement, councillor Pablo Rodríguez confirmed the work is aimed at improving road safety and avoiding the
loss of service capacity of the section that runs between San Isidro and Las Américas. This is one of the main interventions planned for the island of Tenerife and from its department. Pablo Rodríguez said that “as promised”, the deadlines for the bidding of this work have been met, since in 2017 the project of the Las ChafirasOroteanda link was updated and drafted and the bidding process was initiated to award and start the work this year. The work project of the third lane of the TF-1, San Isidro-Las Americas section, link Las Chafiras-Oroteanda, was drafted in 2014 but it was not possible to execute it due to non-compliance in the
transfers, from 2012 and until 2016, from the State to the Canar y Islands within the framework of the road agreement, adds the Ministry. The new infrastructure will be developed between the 62 + 040 and 64 + 540 kilometre points of the TF-1 highway and on the sections of roads near the secondary roads TF-65, TF652 and TF-655, as well as part of the urban road of the Las Chafiras nucleus. The works will consist of the remodelling of the Las Chafiras link and the creation of a new link from Oroteanda, complementar y to the previous one, at the western end of the Las Chafiras nucleus. The project contemplates the construction of several routes between both links in order to guarantee connectivity with the trunk of the TF-1.
Oil refinery and capital’s council united over “Santa Cruz Verde 2030”
S
ANTA Cruz city council and Cepsa are moving forward in the development of “Santa Cruz Verde 2030”.
The Mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez and the CEO of Cepsa, Pedro Miró, met at City Hall in order to outline the first administrative procedures that allow the development of the project “Santa Cruz Verde 2030”, by which the city will gain 573,000 square metres of surface on part of the land that the refiner y currently occupies. During the meeting, which was attended by directors of the refiner y itself, town planning councillor, Carlos Tarife and municipal technicians, different aspects of the project were addressed, always in tune with “the spirit of collaboration, transparency and participation” to which the parties committed themselves on June 26th when signing the historic agreement. Sr. Bermúdez explained that from an urbanistic point of view, the city council will promote the planning modifications that are necessary to make the project a reality, “always following the legal procedures, the administrative acts and the regulated public information processes”. In this same sense, the Mayor said that the new wording of the General Plan for Town Planning will include this area, an ongoing process
through the technical assistance contracted by the planning department. The city council will also commission, in coordination with the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the preliminary studies to determine the technical feasibility of the bathing area and the marina in La Hondura, included in the aforementioned agreement. Another of the commitments assumed by the council, according to the mayor, is the impulse of the actions - also in this case with the Port Authority - that allow the enabling of the necessary areas so that Cepsa can continue with its work of distribution and storage. Similarly, the process for the dismantling of the current facilities of the refinery and decontamination of the land was analysed. In this regard, the mayor stressed that the necessary legal protocols will be initiated before the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism and before the Ministry of the Environment of the Canary Islands Government, with the
aim that work can begin during the next year. Sr. Bermúdez once again valued the climate of understanding and cooperation between the company and the city council to advance a project of enormous impact and importance. The mayor said that these meetings will continue and will occur at least quarterly, and will include members of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo de Tenerife, the Port Authority and even the Government of Spain if necessary. The historic agreement signed on June 26th provides for the “recovery” of 573,000 square metres of city, of which 67 per cent will remain as public land and the rest as residential and tertiary. “Santa Cruz Verde 2030” will allow the creation of a large system of endowments, equipment and green areas, in addition to promoting improvements in access to the city.
NEW SCULPTURE
Puerto pays homage to fishermen
A
sculpture of the Virgin of Carmen now presides over the fishing pier of Puerto de la Cruz.
The image made in bronze is the work of the sculptor Rodrigo Rodríguez. The space where the old crane was located, behind the Casa de las Real Aduana, in the middle of the fishing pier, has been the emblematic place chosen for its installation, thus fulfilling a demand from the fishing community of the northern municipality. The opening ceremony chaired by the Mayor, Lope Afonso, and the Senior Patron of the Fishermen’s Guild of the Great Power of God, Carlos Carrillo, was attended by several members of the municipal corporation, as well as numerous authorities military and civilians. The Judicial Vicar of the Diocese of Nivariense, Luís Joaquín Gómez Jaubert, was in charge of the blessing of the venerated
image. This action was born from an initiative of the collective of the Fishermen’s Association of Puerto de la Cruz, which has managed to obtain the necessar y funds for the creation and installation of the sculpture by popular subscription. For Carlos Carrillo, president of the Brotherhood, “the presence of the image of the patron saint of the sailors inside the Puerto de la Cruz wharf is another reason for
pride and joy for many sailors and residents of our municipality.” The bronze image has a height of 1.80 metres and an approximate weight of 500 kilos. It is oriented in the direction of the mouth of the port, on a concrete frame covered with rock one metre high. The smelting of the sculpture has been carried out by the canar y workshop Fornax.

POLICE APPEAL
Tenerife link in hunt for escaped murderer
As of July 26th, National Police have intensified a information campaign featuring tips and videos explaining the requirements and steps to be followed to cross borders at airports with greater agility and security. “Following the rules of the Schengen area, the Member States are obliged to carry out systematic checks on all persons, both at the entrance and the exit, in order to reinforce security in the face of the terrorist threat,” a police spokesman explained. “This reinforcement of controls at our external borders is an important tool to fight against the terrorist threat in Europe and improve the security of citizens.” To this end, National Police have increased the electronic doors or posts of the Automated Border Control (ABC) system in the airports of Madrid, Barcelona, Gerona, Palma de Mallorca, Alicante, Malaga, Tenerife Sur, in the Port of Algeciras and in the land crossing between La Linea de Conception and Gibraltar. Currently, a total of 455 cabins are installed in all these border posts, while a year ago there were only 120. Police says the automated control is more secure, modern and comfortable for travellers and only takes 20 seconds without the intervention of offices. “Its use by passengers will shorten the queues and reduce the waiting time to pass control, especially in times of large crowds, usual in the summer months,” said the spokesman. The ABC system identifies the passenger, who is older than 18, carries a DNIe or an electronic Passport and a citizen of the Schengen area, through a double biometric verification of the facial and fingerprint image. In addition, the system authenticates the passenger identification document. In the last twelve months, 6,069,370 passengers have used the cabins of the automated system in Spain. With the dissemination of these explanatory videos, the National Police intends to bring the use of these terminals to the citizen to promote their use and expedite the process.

Business leaders back Santiago del controls over holiday rentals Teide pledges reforms on and want constant checks USINESS leaders in Tenerife have called for regular checks on holiday rentals after telling the Canary Government that illegal lettings are unfair to those who follow the rules. Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, Isaac Castellano, and the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Cristóbal de la Rosa, recently held a meeting with CEOE Tenerife to explain the general framework established by the draft vacation rental decree which allows local councils to establish exceptions. Sr. Castellano told the Confederation of Businesses of Santa Cruz de Tenerife that regulation of the tourist activity of holiday rentals was justified, particularly given the evolution of this type of offer in the archipelago. He said the basic issues that have governed the development of this rule were “the sustainability of the tourism model, the compatibility or incompatibility of tourism and residential uses, the right to housing of residents, labour guarantees and employment in the sector.” The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports explained
that this general framework determines, in line with the previous decree, that the holiday rental is limited to land for residential use not included in tourist areas, although “it will be the town councils and municipalities that will develop the planning and may define implementation standards. “ He also noted that the draft decree includes the need to respect collective agree-ments for vacation rental workers and establishes certain equipment and minimum standards that must be met. In relation to the tourist offer channels, these will be responsible for the truthfulness of the advertising and information they provide regarding the rental of holiday homes, they must include the registration number in the general tourist register of the autonomous community in all types of advertising and must provide collaboration to public administrations. In addition, they must withdraw the publicity of those offers that the
Canarian public administration informs them that they are in a situation of illegality. Isaac Castellano insisted that “the lines of work that have been followed for the drafting of the decree project try to adapt the accommodation offer to the reality of the market by increasing the quality and competitiveness of the destination, harmonise the supply of holiday homes with the needs of the population and tourists, as well as making compatible the new uses with the resources and respecting their proportional implantation and their

WO people were injured during a brawl in Playa de las Americas.
One of them, a 42-year-old man, suffered head injuries and the other, a 32-year-old woman, cuts and bruises of a less serious nature. The incident happened in Calle Madrid just after midnight. The two people wounded were taken to hospital in the south.
Los Realejos furious with Tenerife Cabildo over barranco request L OS Realejos has launched a stinging attack on Tenerife Cabildo, claiming its attitude towards a long-standing improvement request from the council is “passive and evasive”. The Mayor, Manuel Domínguez says they feel “at the back of the queue” when it comes to the Cabildo’s priorities. He says that two years after a municipal request for improvements in the Barranco de Ruiz, nothing has been done. Sr. Domínguez said the local council wanted to improve the area, including the demolition of an old abandoned booth and the provision of a new kiosk bar
and toilets. Los Realejos had asked for a compatibility report as it was a site of scientific interest. This request was made in September of 2016. Much to their surprise, an answer finally arrived on July 19th, two years later, saying the land was protected by Canary law and saying a report was needed from the Protected Natural Protected Area Management Body, in this case the Regional Ministry of the Environment and Territorial
Sustainability. The council has accused the Cabildo of neglect three times over. On the one hand, the delay in the processing or response to its request of about two years ago, failing to implement a simple compatibility report before the territorial law came into force and thirdly, not sending its request to another corresponding insular department. “When the procedure requested by Los Realejos council, the regulations on Territorial Policy did not exist, so the previous should have been applied,” said the Mayor. “There is a lack of cooperation by the Cabildo de Tenerife,
because instead of sending the document that was already in their office to the managing competent body, they have returned it so that again we have to get it to the department in question. “ The council has sent the request again to the Administrative Service of Environment and Territorial Sustainability of the Cabildo de Tenerife and says it awaits a response in the shortest of time “in order to correct the abnormal operation of the insular institution that has placed obstacles for two years to the execution of the already known and demanded project for the recreational area of Barranco de Ruiz “.

UIA de Isora has backed a protocol to avoid sexist attitudes at festival celebrations.
The document, presented by the South Network of Municipalities for Equality, is a decalogue aimed at event organisers. It includes recommendations to avoid discriminatory or offensive behaviour. “It is about complying with the laws in force regarding gender equality,” said Ángeles González, councillor for equality. “We must get to the root to generate a change of consciousness in attitudes that are part of the collective

imagination and popular celebrations are a type of event in which we can and we must involve all of us.” The protocol includes always having a balanced panel of judges ie 50 per cent men, 50 per cent women, ensuring no-one is prevented from taking part due to their sexual orientation, taking a good look at how fiestas are promoted, avoid sexist images or poses and always respecting people’s dignity.
S
ATURDAY, September 29th is the date chosen for the premiere of a new unmissable event for seasonal music lovers in the Canary Islands: “La Manta Rock Festival”. La Esperanza, and specifically the Plaza del Adelantado, will be the centre of a musical event that will bet strongly on the visibility of women and environmental sustainability. Details have been presented by El Rosario council where councillors were joined by the leader of the group “Kakofonías”, Kakó Rodríguez, vocalist and guitarist of the only band unveiled until now of the six already confirmed that will participate in a concert that will feature national and historical groups of Canarian rock. Councillor for culture, Fidel Vázquez, explained that “besides music rock this festival is born as a unique cultural and sustainable project that transcends strictly artistic manifestations, with the provision of diversity of workshops and that will be free of charge.” Likewise, the Environment Minister, Beatriz Díaz, stress-
ed the importance of the environmental component in this event, with its own Environmental Management Plan to reduce the consumption of nonrenewable resources or reduce the generation of waste, among other aspects . Among the six already confirmed bands, there will be a national set entirely composed of women (something not too common in the world of rock) and one of the groups of the Canarian rock that have put soundtrack to the alternative concerts of the archipelago in the last decades. The groups that make up the line-up will be revealed soon, although Kakó Rodríguez already announced that “Kakofonías” will present their latest work “Attention works.” “La Manta Rock Festival” will be held in the squares of the Adelantado and the Town Hall, in La Esperanza, as well as in the Hall of Exhibitions of the City Hall, as an area for conferences
and talks, and the Youth House of El Chorrillo, where the jam
sessions will be developed, which are part of the project.

HISTORIC PEAK
La Laguna looks ahead to future as a top tourist destination
M
ORE than 55,000 tourists stayed in La Laguna during 2017, a historic peak for the northern municipality.
Of these, more than half were Spanish which contrasts with the preponderance of foreign tourism on the island. The findings are contained in a report prepared by the local council’s tourism department and Tourism CajaCanarias-Ashotel ULL. The presentation was attended by the first deputy mayor, Monica Martin and tourism councillor, María José Castañeda, who were accompanied by researcher at the University of La Laguna, Pablo Rodríguez. The report, which is part of the first phase of the strategy, establishes a road map so that in the next decade, tourism will contribute more to the quality of life and well-being of the residents of the municipality. “The intention is to understand where La Laguna is as a destination for, in the second phase, which will begin now, to reach a shared vision of where it is intended to be in the future,” said María José Castañeda. Residents and all involved in the tourism sector will be invited to give their views. The third phase, the planning, will address how that shared vision will be achieved, developing master plans for the two tourist areas of the municipality: the northeast region and the historic centre. The diagnosis on the tourist system of the municipality reveals, in addition, that around 1.78 million excursionists travelled through La Laguna a year, which means an arrival of around 3,247 daily visitors to the city. More than half are peninsular tourists, followed by Germans (17.4 per cent) and French (7.6 per cent). Visitors who stayed during 2017 in hotels and apartments
in La Laguna did so for an average of 3.72 nights. The stay in apartments was superior to the hotel, of 6.31 and 2.99 nights, respectively. At the close of 2017, there were 1,439 authorised places, 915 hotels and 524 extrahoteles. A survey showed expenditure in the city per person of 18.82 euros has been estimated, which multiplied by the total number of visitors, leads to an annual economic impact that exceeds 20 million euros. Fourteen tourism products have been identified in the municipality, with 117 resources related to this matter, such as monuments, natural landscapes, beaches, trails and infrastructures. These products are: heritage cultural, gastronomic, health
and wellbeing, shopping, diving, birdwatching, coastal and bathing, language, paragliding, surfing, hiking, trail biking and mountain biking. The study also highlights that La Laguna is one of the places in Tenerife with more publications (photographs and reviews) on the internet by its residents and visitors. Within
the municipality, the sites that have more impacts of this type are the historic centre, Punta del Hidalgo, Bajamar and the road to the Mount of Las Mercedes (TF-12). The diagnosis on the tourist system of the municipality shows a relevant online presence of La Laguna, thanks to its link with World Heritage cities.
SEA RESCUE
Teenager critically hurt in rock fall A teenager was very seriously injured after falling from a considerable height on to rocks in Tenerife and then into the sea.
The accident took place in the coastal area of La Negra in the municipality of La Matanza de Acentejo. The emergency services were called out just before 6.30pm after a call to the 112 centre. Police, the Civil Guards and medics were joined by the rescue helicopter. The occupants of a recreational boat which had been sailing in the area had already managed to rescue the 16-year-old. It was decided not to transport the injured teenager
to the shore but to carry out an airlift via the helicopter. A crew member was winched down
to the boat and hoisted the victim up before being transferred to the north airport and on to hospital. The teenager’s condition at the time was described as critical.

Spain expects new tourism record but will work on quality
S
PAIN expects to receive 30.4 million international tourists this summer, an increase of more than 2.3 per cent.
Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto announced the forecasts for the months of July to September. This would constitute a new record of arrivals. Regarding spending, the Minister said it could exceed 34,000 million euros, representing an estimated growth of more than 4.1 per cent. The data has been prepared from Turespaña information and the statistics provided by the FRONTUR and EGATUR surveys of the National Institute of Statistics. Reyes Maroto said Spain is still the second most visited country in the world and the first in tourism competitiveness. To this end and with the aim of improving this leadership, the Government is to activate a tourism policy strategy based on the concept of sustainability with a triple approach: economic, looking for a quality tourism; environmental, with an improvement of the environment; and territorial, based on a rebalancing so that the wealth generated by tourism is distributed among all the territories and all the agents.
She explained the first two measures have been taken from the Ministry within that strategy. In the first place, the constitution, in September, of a Network of Intelligent Tourist Destinations based on three concepts: innovation, sustainability and accessibility. The Network, the minister highlighted, will work in local environments contributing in this way to cohesion, the exchange of good practices and the use of synergies between destinations. Secondly, the Minister emphasised the convening of the Tourism Sectoral Conference on July 18th, a dialogue round table during which destinations will be able to present their problems, challenges and opportunities with the aim of working on a common strategy. At the meeting, two important elements will be addressed: the tourist regulations and the working conditions of workers in the sector, since, as the minister has pointed out, the data are positive in terms of the number of workers, but not in terms of working conditions.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES
Work starts at last on tidying up surrounds of “eyesore” villa
W
ORK has finally started on tidying up the surrounds of an abandoned villa on the seafront of Los Cristianos.
Following a long period of administrative procedures, authorisation was given to Arona council by Spain’s coastal department for cleaning the environment around La Casa del Coronel to ensure health and safety. “Actions consist of the cleaning of green areas, cleanliness of the environment, waste management, fencing, landscaping and integration of this enclave in the Playa de Los Cristianos,” said a council spokesman. It is understood the actual building can’t be touched at this time but a fence will be put up around it containing pictures of Los Cristianos. The property, known as the Peña’s Villa, had in recent years become one of the main sources of unhealthiness and insecurity in this nucleus and the municipality of Arona, generating complaints and
Arona urges “have a cleaner coastline” in new campaign
A
RONA has launched a summer campaign to warn and educate people who visit the coast about the impact of the litter they leave be-
denunciations from residents and businessmen, in view of the deteriorating situation that both the property and its immediate surroundings presented. After obtaining administrative authorisation from the
Provincial Directorate of Costas, work started recently to ensure the proper cleaning, hygiene and sanitation conditions at this point of Los Cristianos, located between Juan Alfonso Batista Avenue and the sea. Various old trees and bushes will be felled or pruned as part of the project. The council says this will also help to avoid fires which have happened in the past. The spokesman explained: “Arona council works on the environmentalisation and improvement of its natural surroundings, where the beaches of the municipality are projected as one of the main places of recreation, guaranteeing hygiene, safety and providing quality services for the enjoyment of all of its residents and visitors.” “The landscape integration of this plot in the Playa de Los Cristianos, after its conditioning, will culminate with an enclosure of the building,
as an exhibition support, which will accommodate through graphic representations moments of the town’s history and its people, the natural spaces protected from the municipality, and emblematic terrestrial and marine species of Arona.” The Mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, explained that “the deteriorating situation in which both the property and its immediate surroundings were found was an obvious danger for the beach users and for the health problems that it caused, circumstances that motivated the necessar y municipal action.” “To be able to act,” he added, “it was necessary to obtain authorisation from the Provincial Directorate of Coasts, consent that has been achieved to ensure the safety and health of the environment.” “The ultimate goal of the council is to recover this space for public use by residents and users of the Playa de los Cristianos”.

And to make sure the accumulated rubbish is put to a good use, it is to be recycled and used to create a sculpture, courtesy of local artist Irene Sanfiel. The initiative is being led by Arona council under the umbrella of the environmental programme “Arona takes care of you all”. It is taking place during July and August and will feature waste collection and clean-ups in the coastal areas, with workshops, environ-mental events and information stands. “The waste will be used for the assembly of a sculpture by the artist Irene Sanfiel with the aim of raising awareness among the population about the garbage that is abandoned in the coastal area,” said a council spokesman. The awareness campaign is aimed as much at local residents as it is tourists. So far, waste collection has been carried out by groups of volunteers in Playa Honda and the Fitenia area in Playa de las
Américas, and soon the same activity will be carried out in Los Enojados beach. In August, information booths will be installed in which environmental workshops and dynamics will take place on the beaches of Las Vistas, Las Galletas and Los Cristianos, ending with their placement during the celebration of the Fish Fair on August 25th. Arona council says: “The objectives of this campaign are to raise awareness and inform the population of the importance of reducing waste and encouraging more sustainable consumption habits that respect the coastal and marine environment.” “Use an ashtray on the beach for cigarette butts, take the waste in a bag to the nearest container, use reusable containers or collect the droppings of pets to have a clean environment to walk, are some of the actions that all people can carry out to have a cleaner coastline.”

Puerto and Tigaiga hotel lead the way in waste composting
P
UERTO de la Cruz has become the first municipality in Spain to implement autocomposting in a tourist establishment.
The measure will allow about 70kg of organic matter to be transformed into compost quickly and without the need to resort to large tracts of land. The pilot test of self-management of organic matter is being carried out in the Tigaiga hotel. This action is aimed at reducing the number of tons that leave the accommodation each year to end up in the Tenerife Environmental Complex (former PIRS). “This is another step forward in the path of sustainability for which the tourist city is becoming known,” said the Mayor, Lope Afonso.
Councillor of general services, Ángel Montañés said hotel waste currently corresponds to compostable organic matter and therefore recoverable for agriculture and gardening. “This system could selfmanage up to 2,500 tons each year, which would have been buried in Arico,” he pointed out. If the pilot scheme proves a success, it will be rolled out to other hotels. This initiative is being tested and aligned with the objectives of the European project Urban Waste, in which Puerto is taking part.

OLICE in the Canary Islands say they have finally dismantled one of the largest drug traf ficking networks in the archipelago.
As a result of two years of investigation, 58 people of different nationalities have been arrested and real estate and assets worth nearly four million euros blocked or impounded. Another 1.4 million euros in cash was also seized, together with 600 kilograms of cocaine, 2,800 kilograms of hashish, five boats and 32 high-end
vehicles. The operation was carried out by officers of the National Police, the Civil Guard and officials of the Tax Agency, along with the British National Crime Agency. The investigation began in early May 2016 after the authorities detected an introduction route for large quantities of narcotic

substances on Tenerife from Gran Canaria. “The investigations carried out indicated a criminal organisation, fully structured and settled in different parts of the archipelago, presumably dedicated to the introduction and distribution mainly of cocaine and hashish, as well as to money laundering,” said a police spokesman. “During more than two years of research, it was possible to identify the structure of the organisation, characterized by being a pyramid, and whose peak would be located in the downtown area and in the La Isleta district of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It also clarified the identity and functions of its members, as well as the different and varied routes used for the introduction of illegal substances in the Canary archipelago. All this allowed to uncover the complex and sophisticated network of money laundering, with which they tried to introduce the benefits obtained with these criminal activities in the legal market.” One of the ways of getting the drugs smuggled in was to hide them in the contents of legal containers awaiting shipment from South America
via boat over the Atlantic. “These containers were deposited in transit in the Port of La Luz and Las Palmas, where several workers of the terminal were responsible for their extraction and subsequent transfer to different security points,” said the police. “Once the drug was recovered, the container was again sealed and relocated to continue its journey, managing to avoid any suspicion. During the investigation, several of these containers were intercepted and a total of almost 600 kilograms of cocaine seized.” For the transport and introduction of the hashish, the organisation took advantage of the coverage given by certain fishing boats in their daily tasks. The boats would usually travel out to the middle of the sea to meet semi-rigid boats from Morocco. Once the transfer was carried out, the fishing boat returned to the port, where it remained docked to the right time to download safely. Fifteen people were arrested in specific relation to this part of the drug smuggling. The whole investigation involved 25 raids when firearms and ammunition were also found.

O
VER the past couple of months I have been having intensive Spanish conversation lessons.
It is many years since I last learned a language (not counting New Testament Greek, which is a rather different challenge) and I guess I had forgotten just how personal an experience that can be. For example, in order to learn the right words and grammar, I have talked to my excellent tutor about every aspect of my daily routine, not to mention my likes and dislikes, family history and so on. If I have been slightly economical with the truth, that is because I say what I can rather than perhaps what I should. In the language learning process I have also learned a great deal about Canarian life in particular and Spanish culture more generally. And one key difference from life back home that I have been very happy to experience for myself is the culture of going out with friends for coffee, drinks or main meals whenever possible rather than eating at home. And why not, when you can depend on the weather being good and the surroundings convivial. No surprise then that non-Spanish communities have embraced this particular tradition with enthusiasm. Most churches are also very keen on eating together. I used to belong to a large evangelical church in central Oxford, where a slightly cynical friend of mine described their social programme as “the three Fs: ood, -un and -ellowship”. Sharing
a meal together is the perfect way to relax with friends, and to make new ones. That said, when I worked in international development, some of my most testing moments involved sharing food. You never want to offend your hosts of course, so you gratefully accept whatever you are offered. I won’t ever forget an evening in Burkina Faso when I was invited to milk a goat and drink the still steaming milk that it gave me; or the community meal in rural Brazil that we ate with our fingers. If you’ve never peeled and eaten a mango with just your hands, it’s not as easy as you might think, especially when surrounded by a large number of gleeful onlookers. And the outcome was not always good. Visiting Rwanda a few years after the genocide I was treated to sorgum beer. When later I was shown how it was made I knew I would suffer for it. And indeed I still do. That, though, is a far cry from Puerto, and from All Saints, where we are keen to welcome visitors to events involving excellent food and drink. Why not come along to our summer barbecue on Saturday 25 August at 1.30 pm where for just €8 you will enjoy some really good homemade food and the opportunity to catch up with friends in the parsonage garden. I look forward to seeing you there.
REFUGE UPDATE
Summer arrives at Accion del Sol
W
ITH the weather warming up, it’s extra important to care for your dog as a single bite from an infected mosquito can cause your dog to get heartworm which will lead to a very slow and painful death. We can never stress enough the importance of treating your dog monthly with special drops to their neck or with a tablet or a yearly injection to prevent this occurrence. Over 60 per cent of the dogs that arrive at the refuge test positive for heartworm. This is a very costly and uncomfortable treatment for the dog but one of utmost importance to prevent pain and suffering to the dogs in our care.
Donations welcome
We guarantee every dog has all the necessary injections, microchip, passport and a clean bill of health before our dogs are up for adoption. We do not charge for adopting a dog but donations are welcomed towards the ongoing rising costs of running the refuge.
Summer opening
Accion del Sol will be open all over the summer holidays at the below times, so if you have any spare time on your hands then please do come and walk the dogs, they love a stroll down to the beach and a paddle in the sea.

HEN K9 staff arrived at the refuge one morning, they found two sealed potato sacks outside, which were moving. Upon opening the sacks, staff found six puppies, which were obviously from two different litters.
The two smallest ones, Lina and Leo, were quickly adopted and went to lovely homes. But this left four, Leila, Lucy, Luke and Lola which are still waiting at the refuge. They were a little shy at first but are getting better every day and despite their rough start to life, remain hopeful for the future. These four pups will be medium to large in size when fully grown. If you would like to know more about these babies contact us for more information or come by the refuge to meet them. We also have three lovely three month old pups which are looking for homes. These three brothers are called Snap, Crackle and Pop and you can find out more about them on our website and Facebook page. In addition, a few days later K9 staff also found a box full of pups outside the refuge one morning. However, these four little girls were only two weeks old and will remain in a foster home until they are old enough to be adopted.

SAFETY LAWS
Canary Government acts to prevent tragedies in the sea
T
HE Canary Government has pledged to do all it can to reduce the number of drowning deaths in the sea.
The Ministry of Territorial Policy, Sustainability and Security has announced several measures as part of a new prevention and safety strategy. Director General of Security and Emergencies, Nazaret Díaz said that although it was up to the individual municipalities to adopt measures on beaches and swimming areas, they had decided to intervene under the three pillars of “prevention, planning and intervention”. According to information provided by the CECOES 1-1-2 Emergency and Security Coordinating Centre, in the first half of the year the number of deaths in the coast has decreased by 40 per cent. “We are talking about the deceased, and not the drowned, because not all the people who die on the coast are drownings, and many times, after the autopsy, it is determined that the cause is another, such as, for example, previous health problems” clarified the general director. From January to June 2017, 34 people died, while in the same period of 2018, 19 died. “It is still a very high number and, therefore, it is important that all administrations, the tourism-business sector and citizens themselves strive to reduce these figures, “ he added. New safety laws for the
beaches and bathing areas of the Canary Islands are in the final phase of approval, pending the mandatory report of the Advisory Council - which must be issued before July 6th as the deadline - before going to the Governing Council for final approval. All beaches and swimming areas will be classified according to risk which will then determine what protection measures are necessary. “To date, a total of 445 beaches and maritime bathing areas have been visited, out of the total of 581 planned,” explained Néstor Padrón. “In addition, technical support is already being provided from the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies to the municipalities for the preparation of the Rescue Plans required by the new decree; 56 of the 77 coastal municipalities of the Canary Islands are already making use of this assistance. through the web platform www.infoplayascanarias.es .” Through social networks, like last year, the Save Lives Together campaign will be reactivated, directed not only to Spanish recipients, but also to foreigners, with messages in English and German. Last year, it had more than six million visits on Facebook, YouTube, Gmail and Instagram.
SCHOOL WORKSHOPS
New campaign on responsible use of video games A
N awareness campaign has been launched among students and families about the responsible use of video games.
Workshops are to be held in 20 educational centres across the Canaries as part of a pilot project. The twice-weekly sessions will include getting the children to enjoy 45 minutes of physical exercise and learning how to deal with the lure of video games, posture, emotion management and so on. The advice will also include tips on how to behave on the social networks. “The main idea of this combination of training workshops, with a session of physical activity and another of videogame training, is that the students associate all these activities and knowledge and get used to including them all in their lives,” said a spokesman for the Canar y education service. The government says it wants to take a realistic attitude towares video games and esports because “they exist in the vast majority of houses and what we cannot do is turn our backs on them and that the students continue to ‘self-educate’, without help from their school or family.”

Gun manufacturing gang caught in Gran Canaria P
FAMILY’S TRIBUTE
OLICE have arrested five people in Gran Canaria accused of turning detonating guns into real pistols and then selling them on the black market. Four of the suspects are men, aged 27, 38, 42 and 48, and the fourth a woman of 42, residents of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and El Tablero and all of them with previous arrests. The security forces have accused them of forming a group that bought detonating pistols in different armories of Gran Canaria and Tenerife and then manipulating them so they could be fired. Buyers came from all over the Canaries. In the operation, four detonating pistols being prepared to
fire live ammunition were intervened. Police said the criminal network acquired 9mm detonator weapons with legal ammunition and modified them making them fully functional. In order to prevent detection in the controls on this type of weapons, the arrested used third parties who lent their identity to buy detonating guns in different armories of Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Once acquired, both the weapons and the ammunition
were manipulated by one of the members of the organisation, who transformed them into real weapons with the ability to detonate projectiles. Finally, the guns were dis-
tributed on the black market by another member, who as an intermediary was in charge of looking for potential buyers throughout the archipelago and carrying out transactions.

Spot microalgae in the sea? New advice from public health
P
UBLIC health officers in the Canaries have issued new advice to residents, tourists and local councils if their beaches become affected by the phenomenon of microalgae.
Tourist resorts in various parts of Spain have had to deal with the problem which often turns the sea orange or green and is being blamed on the changing climate. The Canary Government has sent out new informations to town halls and advises the use of the yellow flag ie take care as opposed to the red flag which prohibits bathing. The health department says: “Microalgae are innocuous but some species - although not all strains of the same species - can produce toxins with different health effects, either through dermal contact, water intake or inhalation.” Officials monitor each case and examine the microalgae which can be seen with the naked eye and take the form of abnormal water colour, lumps or spots on top of the water and a possible nasty smell. The General Directorate of Public Health recommends that people abstain from going into the water, avoid contact with the material, don’t sit downwind in case you inhale the smell and use protective garments if practising water sports in the affected areas. In the event of coming into contact with a ‘microalgae’ bloom, shower or rinse abundantly to remove any residue on the skin and wash and dry clothing or material that has come into contact. “ If you notice any effect on health after exposure to a bloom, see a doctor,” said a spokesman. “Given that the arrival of this type of massive blooms of microalgae is not predictable, it is recommended that the organisers of recreational or sports activities on the beaches foresee alternative solutions in their programming,” he continued. “It is recommended that the municipalities, in the event that the presence of these massive blooms in the bathing areas are detected, install signs or warning signs to the users that include the list of tips. In addition, it is important that both the rescue and first aid personnel, as well as the local beach service police, have this information and can transfer it to bathers to obtain their collaboration, avoiding bathing in the affected part of the beach.”
Canary 112 centre steps up help for gender violence victims EMERGENCY CALLS
W
OMEN calling for help because of gender violence have been promised 24-hour urgent attention thanks to a new agreement.
The 112 Canary Emergency Service has signed an agreement with the Spanish Red Cross to answer calls diverted from the Telephone Service of Care and Protection for victims of gender violence (ATENPRO) in the Canary Islands. The calls will be automatically diverted if there is a lack of coverage or reception. Mobile terminals given to the women at risk are programmed to call 1-1-2 if this should happen.
The service is based on the use of technologies of mobile phone communication and geolocation and enables women victims of domestic violence to make contact 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with the Red Cross Centre attended by personnel specifically prepared to give an adequate response to their situation, either by themselves or by mobilising other human and material resources, specific to the client or existing in the community.
The terminals that the users receive have a localisation system that transmits these data to the Spanish Red Cross Service Centre. In addition, it allows telephone communication by voice with said centre and in the case of women with hearing impairment, communication is articulated through a text message. The operational rooms of the 1-1-2 must respond and immediately manage these emergency calls, counting with the ATENPRO database of the Red Cross, also informing the NGO about the existence of such calls for coordination and timely effects.

Easyjet wins new route from La Palma to Basel
T
HE Ministry of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands has awarded the route that will link La Palma with the Swiss city of Basel to Easyjet. The airport of Basel is located on the border between the southeast of Germany and the French Alsace. Tourism chiefs says this region is of strategic interest as it will service not just the Swiss themselves but also the nearby regions. “It is a great opportunity to grow the number of travellers from this area and will boost the arrival of tourists to La Palma,” said a spokesman. The new route will start operating in November 2018 and will offer two weekly flights during the winter
seasons. About 8,000 tourists will be able to reach the island on a regular basis with this new connection, which joins those who already come on the regular route La Palma Zurich. Easyjet company has been present on the island since 2016 and the Basel route joins those already operating with London and Berlin. Minister of Tourism, Isaac Castellano said this route is added to the 23 new ones opened since April 2014, when the Flight Development Fund was launched.

El Hierro aims to provide the best bus services in the Canaries

L Hierro wants to become the leader in the Canary Islands for good public transport. Routes and frequency were expanded from August 1st in a bid to help local residents and tourists and to promote sustainable mobility. Island president, Belén Allende said: “We move ahead in time to other islands, betting decisively on public transport, giving priority to the user of regular transport, improving services, expanding fleet and guaranteeing discounts in the case of the elderly, young people and unemployed.” This new extension, the third one since 2016, will increase frequencies in virtually all routes, as well as putting more buses before and after normal working hours. “One of our main objectives

was to connect the most remote parts of the island with each other, Sabinosa and La Restinga. Make them closer and with the same development possibilities and services as the rest of the people, “declared the manager of TransHierro, Ángel Lima. Improvements in the re-
gular service carried out in 2016 resulted in an increase in passenger traffic in the bus of 17.74 per cent (139,060 passengers compared to 114,385 in 2015). Last year, the increase was 13.38 per cent compared to 2016, transporting 157,672 people. Investment is also continuing into new buses.
BA will increase its air traffic with Gatwick to reach seven weekly connections at various times of the season; the low cost operator will open new routes with Berlin-Schönefeld, Venice and Manchester. Tourism councillor, Angel Vazquez (PP), said it was an important development as holidaymakers who used British Airways were linked to greater tourism spending higher than the average. Of the six new routes that easyJet will open between the Canary Islands and Europe, half have Lanzarote as their destination. Lanzarote has recently been promoting itself in London as a
gastronomic destination and meetings were held with British Airways which is an important partner in the promotion. On the other hand, Angel Vazquez notes that of the six new EasyJet routes open between the Canary Islands and Europe in the coming winter season, “half correspond to new connections
between Lanzarote and European cities, demonstrating our strength as a destination”. Specifically, the low cost airline will connect Lanzarote with Berlin-Schönefeld from October 28th on Thursdays and Sundays, with Venice starting on October 30th on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and with Manchester from November 7th on Wednesdays and Saturdays .

WO people have been arrested on suspicion of carrying out 37 robberies in Fuerteventura hotels. They are believed to have struck at eight different hotel complexes in the municipality of La Oliva, breaking into 37 rooms between last November and this March. Police started to investigate after receiving numerous complaints and realising that the same method was used in each. The thieves almost always headed for the safes, carrying them away before
opening them, stealing the contents and leaving the safe in remote areas. They always acted in the morning when the guests were at breakfast, forcing
doors or windows to get in. The duo also obtained 1,000 euros fraudulently by using one of the stolen credit cards but were unsuccesful in another attempt to get 2,800 euros.

Traffic director warns over “distractions” which lead to fatal accidents
L Spanish boost as Admiral Europe opts for Madrid and Seville
I
NSURANCE giant, Admiral Europe has been granted authorisation to operate in Spain by the Government’s Ministry of Economy and Business . Admiral Europe Insurance Company, S.A., belongs to the British Admiral insurance group. The company is to create an insurance company in Madrid (Admiral Europe) and an insurance broker in Seville (Admiral Intermediary Services). It is the first insurer in the United Kingdom to transfer its continental operations to Spain as a result of Brexit. “The choice of Spain is especially significant since, being the second country in market share, it shows the confidence of the British insurer in the Spanish market and in the supervisory body,” said a spokesman for the Spanish Government. The Admiral group is one of the leading car insurance companies in the United Kingdom, with total revenues of nearly 3,000 million pounds and has a presence in the Italian insurance markets (€170 million in premiums), Spain (€73 million in premiums), France (€66 million in
premiums). It also has activity in the United States. Until now, Admiral operated in Spain as a branch of the British parent company and commercialised automobile insurance through the Qualitas Auto brand and the Rastreator and Balumba comparators. Admiral Europe Insurance Company, S.A. It intends to start operations in Spain as of January 1, 2019. Elisa de Blas, Head of Business Strategy in Admiral Seguros in Spain, said: “We wanted to create a new corporate structure from which to centralise the underwriting and management of our policies in the countries of the EU and, in this sense, we decided that opting for Spain was a good opportunity. We have people and infrastructure in both Madrid and Seville, so the new subsidiaries will not involve a significant cost for the Group, not to mention the advantage of the fact that we already know the Spanish market.”

AST year there were 102,233 traffic accidents with victims in Spain, in which 1,830 people died and 139,162 were injured, of which 9,546 required hospital admission.
These figures have been presented by the director general of traffic, Pere Navarro to coincide with the country’s busiest fortnight in which thousands of citizens begin their summer vacations and choose the vehicle for their travel. It means Spain continues with a rate of deaths per million inhabitants of 39, which places it in eighth position in the European Union area, below the average community rate, which is 50. Sr. Navarro said he wanted to draw attention to “the pandemic of traffic accidents and the need to react to a scourge that as a society we cannot afford.” He also recalled “the responsibility that each one of us has, when one
of the group has been drinking or consumed some kind of substance and we let them get behind the wheel, or when we allow the driver to use the mobile during driving. We are all responsible and we can all avoid an accident. “ In 2017, six out of ten accidents with victims took place on urban roads, but accidents with fatalities were concentrated in interurban roads. Last year 37 per cent
(37,493) of traffic accidents with victims took place on the interurban roads. On these roads, 72 per cent of the fatalities (1,321) occurred, of which 1,013 (77 per cent) were in conventional routes. In the urban roads there were 64,740 accidents with victims, in which 509 people died (28 per cent of the total) and 4,780 were hospitalised with injuries. The vulnerable groups: pedestrians, cyclists and motorists represent 46 per cent
of all the deceased. In 2017, 78 cyclists, 359 motorcyclists, 49 mopeds and 351 pedestrians passed away. In one out of every three deaths, drivers tested positive for alcohol and/or illegal drug use. Andalusia, the Canar y Islands, Castilla y León, Galicia, the Valencian Community and the Basque Country are the communities that have reduced the number of deaths in a traffic accident compared to the previous year.
MASSIVE DAMAGE
Nine arrested as part of train graffiti gang “touring Spain”
N
ATIONAL Police officers have arrested nine graffiti artists for committing 105 crimes of damage in trains and wagons.
The detainees formed a travelling group or crew that had repeatedly acted on trains in the provinces of Madrid, Salamanca, Valladolid, Segovia, Ávila, León, Murcia, Valencia and Asturias. The value of the damages caused amounts to about 420,000 euros. The investigation began in January when police received a tip-off that various graffiti attacks were the work of the same gang. After analysing the criminal acts and the signatures or tag, the agents found that this group was responsible for up to 105 crimes of damage committed in up to 21 localities and valued at about 420,000 euros. In order to commit criminal offences, the detainees carried out a preliminary study of the site and checked if there were security guards or surveillance technical devices, hiding their faces with caps or scarves to make it difficult to identify them. “The group had a clear division of tasks when making the graffiti. Several of them formed a row to be distributed throughout the convoy, others watched and others recorded graffiti and later spread it through social networks,” said a police spokesman. After analysing all the information, the agents proceeded to arrest the nine investigated in the northern zone of Madrid (six), Zamora, Segovia and Salamanca. In the investigation, agents of the local Police of Collado Villalba and Salamanca have collaborated.

Nursing professionals suffer scourge of assaults

Police arrest “Superman” for armed robberies in Spain!
P
OLICE in Spain have arrested an armed robber who held up stores dressed as Superman!
A
total of 1,593 nursing professionals suffered some type of aggression in the year 2017, of which 70 per cent were verbally attacked and 30 per cent physically, one of them being in the Canary Islands. The shocking figures have been released following data provided by the National Observatory of Aggression to Nurses, launched in 2018 by the General Council of Nursing. Andalusia is the autonomous community in which most cases were recorded (557) followed by Castilla y León (203) and País Vasco (184). However, in the opinion of the Secretary General of the General Council of Nursing, Diego Ayuso, this data is just the “tip of the iceberg” since in some communities there is a “bad management” of the information related to these aggressions and in others, such as Catalonia, no records are kept. “At the criminal level, what is being reported is physical aggression, but many more suffer from verbal and psychologically abuse which affecta the professional in a very important way. If someone comes to work and insults you or threatens you, that generates instability, anxiety and enormous stress, which of course a professional nurse should not have to suffer, “ said Diego Ayuso. Hospitals, health centres and institutions have been urged to keep records and to remind staff of coverage by the civil liability policies (legal assistance as a result of physical assault suffered by the
nurse) . “The ultimate goal is to stop the scourge of assaults on healthcare personnel, as well as their impact on the health and safety of the professionals affected, it has the capacity to have a negative effect on the performance of the health activity and the quality of the health welfare service that lend to all citizens, “Pérez Raya said.

Yorkshires and chihuahuas bred in illegal centre
T
HE Civil Guard has seized 397 dogs from an illegal breeding centre where documents were falsified and there were no veterinary controls.
The cocky 30-year-old was so assured of his own Krypronite powers that when he branded a shotgun at a child who asked if it was real, he replied: “Do you want to check it?” The youngster then fled.
The robber twice made his getaway from his targets but was eventually caught at his home where police found a full Superman outfit, as well as a number of weapons. The bizarre hold-ups happened in Chinese bazaars in Murcia
but the suspect forgot he was being recorded by CCTV cameras. Footage was studied by police who managed to trace the man after gathering witness statements. Police said he wore the iconic red and blue Superman outfit on each occasion, to-
gether with a black jacket, sunglasses and crash helmet. The 30-year-old has been charged with “robbery with violence and intimidation in an establishment open to the public, through the exhibition of firearms and use of a costume.” He is currently being held in custody.

Gang falsified prestigious wine, selling fake bottles at 1,900 euros
S
PANISH police have busted a criminal organisation which falsified top quality wines, selling bottles for as much as 1,900 euros when they were only worth a pittance!
Four people have so far been detained and another four are being investigated for belonging to a criminal organisation, contravening industrial property and crimes against public health, money laundering and fraud. Six raids were carried out in Madrid, A Coruña
A 59-year-old man of Spanish nationality was also arrested as the alleged author of the crimes of abuse animal, professional intrusion, usurpation and falsification of documents. The raid was carried out in Vinarós, Valencia where various breeds were being bred, including Yorkshires, Pomerania, Chihuahua and Bichón Maltes, all for subsequent commercialisation in animal shops in large shopping centres in Barcelona. The animals have been relocated in an authorised centre.
and Málaga, three in private homes and the other three in commercial premises, including a warehouse and restaurant. Police found numerous effects and documents related to the investigation, including 1,600 falsified labels of different brands, 28 bottles of falsified wine, stamps, corks, multi-tools, die-cutter, molds and metal plates, labels, wooden packaging boxes in the name of one of the defrauded companies, as well as various computer equipment and printers. It is believed more than 1,500 false bottles of wine from different brands were sold since 2014, estimating that the group has been able to obtain a benefit of more than 1.5 million of euros. The investigation began last October following a complaint filed in the town of Navalcarnero (Madrid), by the head of a prestigious wine company which expressed their suspicions about the sale of false bottles of their brand through a website. The gang acquired wine with similar properties and of the same denomination of origin but at a much more economic price. Subsequently, they were packaged in bottles with similar characteristics. Also, they bought corks and plugs similar to those of the brands and screened them with a home-made machine that they designed to stamp the logos and anagrams.

Spain to appeal over US import tax on black olives
S
PAIN’S Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, travelled to Brussels together with the State Secretary for Trade, Xiana Méndez, and the Secretary-General for Industry and SMEs, Raúl Blanco, to defend Spanish interests before the European institutions.
During her stay in the Belgian capital, Reyes Maroto held a meeting with the European Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmström, and with the Commissioner for the Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, Elzbieta Bienkowska. Among other issues, the Spanish minister addressed the imposition of tariffs by the United States on the import of certain Spanish products, such as black olives. “Spain will support the European Union’s decision to appeal to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to prevent US customs tariffs on this product, which directly affects the Spanish economy,” explained Reyes Maroto. According to the Spanish authorities, the decision by the US Administration was taken arbitrarily, following an incorrect assessment and without allowing sufficient time for its opposition, thus creating a situation of defencelessness. The minister also expressed her concern over the automotive sector, after the US President, Donald Trump, recently insinuated that he may impose tariffs of around 20 per cent on vehicles imported from the 28 EU Member States. The Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism also used this meeting to address the protective measures that the European Union has adopted on
23 products in the steel sector that directly and indirectly affect Spanish industry and trade, and which will remain in force for at least 200 days. “The visit by a European Commission delegation to the USA, headed up by President Juncker, to open up a space for dialogue with the US Administration to recover normality in trade relations is good news”, stressed Reyes Maroto. At the meeting held in the Belgian capital, such other issues were discussed as the future of alliances with China, the influence of Brexit, the support to maintain the Appellate Body of the WTO, the defence of its impartiality and the need for a rotation system to take all countries into account, and the intention to schedule and speed up negotiations with MERCOSUR, among others. In terms of industry, Reyes Maroto explained that the 2030 industrial policy strategy to which the present government is committed must have four clear goals: to increase the weighting of industry in the economy, to improve the market shares of EU exports in global markets, to increase industrial employment and to enhance how society perceives industry.

Allan McIntyre Jag I-Pace is electrifying
It’s a bit strange experiencing a fast car like this without engine noise but I could quite easily get used to it. Getting under way is simple – touch the start push button and then the drive button between the two front seats and you’re off. That’s when the real driving fun and enjoyment begins in an I-Pace that can rocket to 60mph in just 4.5 seconds. The car cruises along ever so smoothly but be warned – it will go faster than the legal 70mph motorway limit without you noticing. That’s why the £900 headsup display is a handy option to keep track of your speed as you look at the road ahead. The I-Pace’s power comes
of up to 298 miles and satnav will give nearest charge points when you enter in your journey. Public charging from zero to 80 per cent takes 85 minutes with a 30-minutes charge giving a range of around 80 miles. Home charging with an AC wall box will take just over ten hours, ideal for overnight charging. With a top speed of 124mph, there’s more than enough power, coming instantly when required. The raindrops were the loudest things to be heard, with the lack of engine noise, as I cruised along. The sudden downpour didn’t spoil my drive at all as

There’s lots of room up front and three adults can sit comfortably in the rear. The cockpit has all the latest hi-tech features viewed on two screens. There’s also lots of stowage space – 656-litre boot rising to 1,453 with seats folded flat – 25 litres under the bonnet, 10.5 litre central storage and tablet and laptop space beneath rear seats. Prices for this groundbreaking Jaguar start at £58,995 (including government incentives) with the HSE model costing £74,445.
I
T might seem a bit too early to be thinking about my car of the year for 2018.
But unless something really, really exceptional comes off the production lines between now and the October deadline, I know where my vote will be going for the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers’ top model. I waited expectantly for my chance to get behind the wheel when Jaguar brought its first all-electric vehicle up to Scotland recently. And I had a huge smile on my face after a 40-minute drive in Jaguar’s I-Pace. It’s got to be the most stylish looking SUV on the market with its sleek coupe-like silhouette – and has stacks of space in a stunning interior. But the real stand-out features of the I-Pace are its performance and handling. I quickly discovered that this four-wheel drive Jag will race out of the blocks like a
sports car and delivered instant power effortlessly. I’ve sampled hybrid cars in recent years as the motor industry builds up to an electric future – well the future has just arrived in the shape of the IPace. The only downside to this
model is for lovers of engines producing those roaring noises thundering out of the exhaust pipes. But the green brigade will be cheering loudly at the car’s arrival – with zero tailpipe emissions, no CO2 and no particulates.
Hints and tips for buying cars
W
HEN you first make a move to a foreign country there are always many things that you need to consider depending on your personal circumstances. Properties, Schools, work and of course transport, which in mainly a car.
In the UK it is often the case that in many households those old enough to, drive and have a car of their own or use of that of their parents/grandparents or other family members. Of course, they want the same in their new home. So here we will explain some of the pitfalls to avoid and some tips to get the best out of your money and choice.
Cars Most people will have done research before moving a family over, however all too often they have not factored in the higher costs of cars here in the second-hand market, a car that may have cost you 2.500 pounds in the UK is likely to be double that or more here. Buying a second-hand car can be fraught with disasters if you do not know where to go or how the system works. In general, it is not a good idea to buy a car off the side of the road for many reasons. Firstly, and quite often, the car for sale is not owned by the person advertising it and its highly probable that the car may not be transferable into your name because of embargo’s (debts) which go with the car. These debts are sometime relatively small for example a couple of years outstanding Rodaje (Road Tax) and whilst the amounts are substantially lower than UK costs it can often be hundreds of euros, adding to the cost of the car unexpectedly.
The method of taking legal ownership of the car in Spain involves a fair amount of paperwork being signed and presented and Tax has to be paid to Hacienda (the Tax Office) of 5.5% of the official valuation (not necessarily the amount you will be paying for the car) along with costs at Tráfico (Spanish equivalent of the DVLA) and any administration charges incurred for instructing someone to do this on your behalf. Unless you are going to visit Santa Cruz yourself with a translator in tow, then only Official Tráfico Collaborators can do this on your behalf. Sounds scary and confusing ….... it does not have to be if you take some simple steps. We say this time and time again to people, when buying a car privately NEVER NEVER part with any money for the purchase without having a debt check (similar to a HPI check in the UK). Motorworld can do this for you quickly and for a reasonable cost potentially saving you thousands of euros …
Insurance Insurance for a car works differently in Spain in so much as its the CAR that is insured not the driver. For people under the age of
25 who have not held a full license for long (normally it has to be a minimum of two years but each company has different rules) then the task of obtaining insurance can be difficult and costly, although not normally anywhere near as expensive as UK prices. However, on the plus side you can use your No Claims Bonus here provided you are able to provide the relevant documentation required by the individual companies. For people over the age of 25, obtaining cover, providing they hold a full and clean licence is much easier. Prices are sometimes considerably less that the same cover in the UK but on occasions more, a lot depends on the car and the company you chose. Our advice is to take seek information and advice from a reputable legal company, whether this is for the purchase of a car or getting insurance quotes. Buyer beware as they say, be prepared to walk away if you have any doubts.

These symptoms are commonly seen with other illnesses too, which are often less serious, but you should always call your vet if you are worried your pet is sick.
How can I protect my dog from blue-green algae? If your dog becomes ill after entering water, contact your vet urgently and tell them you are worried about blue-green algae. Keep your dog away from lakes and ponds that you know, or suspect may, contain blue-green algae. Dogs should not be allowed to swim or paddle in water that contains blue-green algae. Don’t let dogs drink from water that may have blue-green algae in. Because the wind often blows blooms of algae to the edges of ponds or lakes, higher concentrations of the toxin are more likely to be present in the parts of the water your dog may drink from. Yes, blue-green algae can cause skin rashes, sickness, stomach pains, fever and headaches in humans. There have been some reports of
more serious illnesses including liver and brain damage. Children are at greater risk than adults. Don’t drink from or enter this water. The following advice relates to the UK but you should always take caution wherever you are with your pet.
TOP TIPS
Playing with ice cubes F
OR humans, they might make a cooling addition to a drink – but for cats, ice cubes can provide a whole world of fun. Pop them on a hard floor and watch your curious cat push them around the room and pounce. As well as cooling down their paws, where cats absorb and lose heat, it provides enrichment on days when it’s best to keep your cat indoors and out of the heat.
Cooling mats and ice packs in beds
There are a wide range of cooling mats for pets available to buy, but placing freezer blocks or pads, or even a pack of frozen vegetables, well wrapped in a blanket in your cat’s favourite spot will have a similar effect.
Wet towel
Most cats hate getting wet, so they’re unlikely to want to take a dip in any water to cool off. But wet a small towel in cold water and dab over your cat’s fur, or just stroke cat with wet hands, to bring some relief from hot weather.
Keep on top of grooming
Excess fur on cats traps heat, so daily grooming during heatwaves to get rid of dead hair will make your cat feel a little more comfortable. You may also notice that your cat is grooming itself more than normal, too. This is nothing to worry about – it’s their very own way to beat the heat as when the saliva evaporates off the fur, it will cool them down.

A great part of the fun of wining and dining in Tenerife is finding somewhere different and it’s well worth a trip out to Santa Ursula to the warm and inviting Donde Mario. Though from the outside you might easily pass by it, the inside is elegant and captivating. Restaurateur Mario Torres surprises us every day with his extensive use of produce in season, and his unbeatable experience with wines and cookery. Just try his Cherne warm salad, a super-healthy Canarian fish soup, or his Lomo de Vaca Morucha. You will be captivated.
Set in a series of old Canary houses, this restaurant is made up of a labyrinth of inter-connecting rooms leading off from the bar area in the centre. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an English country pub with its low ceilings with wooden beams and warm décor. The food is fundamentally Canarian. They grow most of their own produce at their allotment and only use olive oil to cook with. Their ethos is a simple one, only use the best, fresh produce and cook it with thought and care. The menu is described as Picoteo, slightly more than tapas without reaching the full-blown three-course meal status. It is delicious and affordable. “La Bodeguita de Enfrente” won the “II Gastronomic Awards Cruzcampo Gran Reserva El Día-Mesa Abierta”, which took place last year.
Why not try a touch of “picoteo”, the Spanish-style of eating where, as the name suggests, you pick a selection of dishes and share with your companions. FIVE-A-DAY!
Fruity success at Loro Parque as farms champion more organic crops
T
HE animals at the internationally-famous Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz are certainly getting their “five a day” thanks to a pioneering new scheme. Visitors can regularly see the park’s permanent “residents” tucking into all sorts of fruit and veg, many of which are of an unusual variety. This is the result of new tropical fruits being introduced to its organic crops. The park has also begun to use predatory insects in order to keep their plantations free of insecticides and, thus, be able to self-supply with products of the best quality. These advances in organic farming also helps Loro Parque, the best zoo in the world according to TripAdvisor, to strengthen its commitment to sustainability. This year, their farms have been registered with the Canary Institute of Agrifood Quality (ICCA), which guarantees the safety, reliability and quality of all their products. The tropical crops recently introduced include the lychee, the longan which is similar to the lycghee, red and green atemoya; the cherimoya and the guanábana or the tamarillo, which is used to make juices for customers and that can also be included in the diet of some animals.
“These new species provide balance to the rich and varied diet of the animals of Loro Parque, who also enjoy fruits such as mangos of different varieties and from different continents - carambola and papaya,” a spokesman explained. All the products from its farms are treated biologically and ecologically. The use of predatory insects is beneficial for the plantations, when fighting other harmful insects without causing any damage to the crops. In the case of banana trees, for example, traps with pheromones have been placed and a bugs release has been carried out to eliminate the red spider. Loro Parque is also attending to the cultivation of the vegetable, tr ying to recover the old Canarian potato for the restaurants of the park and introducing other vegetables such as the pepper, with the aim of having it all the year and, thus, be able to offer it to the animals and to the customers. Like the other plantations, its treatment is totally eco-
logical and no insecticides are used that can leave some kind of residue. As reinforcement, sulfur-based

CANARIAN CUISINE
Gastronomy to star in second edition of “Culinaria”
G
ASTRONOMY as a tourist attraction will again take centrestage in Tenerife from September 26th to 28th as the island hosts the second edition of “Culinaria”.
The event is organised by Tenerife Cabildo and the Association of Chefs and Confectioners (Acyre Canarias). It will be held in the Tourism Development Centre of Costa Adeje (CDTCA) and the facilities of the Canary Islands Tourism Innovation Factory, FIT Canarias. The congress, which has the collaboration of the Government of the Canary Islands and Adeje council, is aimed at professionals in the kitchen, pastry and Horeca sector (hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars and catering) and also owners and managers of hotels and restaurants where many of these professionals perform their daily work. Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Jesús
Morales, pointed out that “gastronomy shapes our Canarian identity not only because it contributes to the generation and preservation of the landscape, but also because it has already become an indispensable element for understanding culture and the way of life in our territory.” Deputy Minister of the Primary Sector, Abel Morales, stressed the importance of this
gastronomic event “whose objective is also one of the main objectives on which the Government of the Canary Islands has been working in this term: to value the cuisine and the local product as base of this kitchen, as an essential element of the tourist offer of the islands.” In this sense, through the” Grow Together “project, agreements have been signed with six hotel chains, asso-
ciations of tourism companies and food distribution companies to promote the presence of agricultural production of the archipelago in tourist channels and have been carried out more than 1,900 promotional actions of Canarian products to date, in hotels, fairs and other events and large distribution, and 44 training actions in these productions. The president of Acyre, Pablo Pastor, recalled the success of the first edition of Culinar y in 2016, “where almost 3,000 seats were available in the different presentations and workshops.” For its part, the vice president of the association, Juan Carlos Clemente, has advanced that 33 papers will be developed during the days of the congress
“with which we want to value our products and the so-called ‘Atlantic Cuisine’ with which we should feel identified.” The objective of this congress is to promote gastronomy as an essential element of the tourist offer of the islands. According to the data of the survey on the tourist that visits Tenerife, the restoration is the main departure of visitors during their stay in Tenerife and contributes to the destination around 728 million euros. Along with food purchases, which represent 242 million euros per year, the total revenue received by the destination for this concept exceeds 970 million euros. The protagonism of Culinaria 2018 focuses on the variety and quality of the more than 30 technical activities,
presentations, conferences and workshops run by experts of great prestige and that respond to the needs of professionals from the sectors related to gastronomy in general . The technical activities are complemented, in addition, by a fair section that will show machinery, products, equipment, technology and services aimed at the sector. Culinary Tenerife 2018 is consolidated as well as an effective tool for training, professional recycling, debate and knowledge of the new preparation and presentation techniques that are setting the guidelines for tourism gastronomy and that concentrates the attention of journalists, communicators and specialised bloggers.

MORGAN’S SURPRISE
UNPRECEDENTED ACHIEVEMENT
Loro Parque looks forward to a very special birth but when?
Five times a world champ in TripAdvisor: Siam celebrates!
P
A
INPOINTING the date of birth of a human baby is simple when compared with the arrival of a whale’s calf! This is the dilemma currently facing experts at Loro Parque but they do know the new off-spring of Morgan will enter the world by the end of the summer. Everything is ready for the birth with constant checks and almost daily ultrasounds. Dr. Geraldine Lacave, a Belgian veterinar y and specialist in marine mammal, who has been a consultant to Loro Parque for over ten years, says ever ything is going perfectly, both with Morgan and with the foetus. “The aim now is to determine as precisely as possible the date of birth as, although some indicators are known, there is generally little experience with the birth of these animals,” a spokesperson for Loro Parque explained. “To this end, Morgan’s body temperature is regularly monitored because it is known
to drop by one degree about 24 hours before the calf is born; the circumference of different parts of her body are measured because it’s expected to grow considerably a few weeks prior to birth; there are updates on her behavioural record to moitor her swimming style, her relationship with other animals, etc., and calculate the distance between the two breast folds, which will be greater in the days leading up to calving, among other indicators.” Dr. Jorge Soares, Veterinar y Director of Loro Parque, has pointed out that Morgan’s histor y throws some uncertainty over the
immediate moments of childbirth, because it could have an impact on her behaviour as a first time Mum, and it’s not known how she and the rest of the group will react. That is precisely why there is a whole team of experts who work daily to be prepared for any circumstance. In this regard, Dr. Lacave explains that an action protocol has been prepared in the event that there is a difficult birth. However, what is most likely, she says, is that “The baby will be born, rise to the surface, breathe, and then go swimming peacefully off with its mother” it would also be within the bounds of normality for Morgan or the baby to need some help. In which case, all personnel are prepared to act. In addition, as soon as the estimated date of birth approaches, a round the clock guard will be activated
augmenting the usual 24-hour security surveillance on the premises. Thus, a team of people will continuously observe Morgan’s behaviour, breathing rate, activity, etc. In Loro Parque, where the news of this orca’s pregnancy at the end of last year was a source of great joy, everyone is looking forward to the arrival of the calf. “We hope that in September we will have a new super-healthy orca and a super-happy Mum in Morgan” says Dr. Soares. Morgan was transferred to Loro Parque in 2011 at the request of the Dutch authorities after being rescued off Dutch coast but there has been continued controversy and court challenges by environmentalists who say she should be set free. This has always been disputed by Loro Parque which says she is being looked after to the upmost degree and would not survive in the wild.
Guia de Isora opens 20th national art competition CASH PRIZES
G
UIA de Isora has opened entries for its 20th National Art Award.
The contest will reward the modalities of painting and sculpture with an amount of 1,200 euros. The works can be submitted until August 31st. In September, they will be exhibited in the framework of the Patron Saint Festivities. Those wishing to enter the painting section can submit two pieces of work but they must be original and unpublished. The style
technique is free. In the sculpture mode, only one piece per person can be entered. As in previous editions, the winning works plus others selected by a jury will form an exhibition at the Cultural Centre of Guía de Isora as part of the patron saint festivities throughout the month of September. The award for both categories is 1,200 euros and the bases can be consulted on the notice board of the corporation, on the municipal website and in the leaflets distributed by all municipalities and councils of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. The works must be submitted to the Department of Culture and Citizen Participation of the Isorano City Council (C / La Vera, nº5, Guía de Isora, CP.38680) complying with the requirements explained in the bases for each modality, until August 31.
S its tenth anniversary commemoration is just around the corner, and after a long history of recognition, Siam Park has made history again by pulling off an unprecedented achievement. For the fifth consecutive year, TripAdvisor has awarded them the Travellers’ Choice Award for the Best Waterpark in the World thanks to the positive feedback from visitors, demonstrating that the success of its management lies in a perfect balance of quality, innovation and excellence. In fact, this combination has put it in a dominant position: not only is it the only park to have won this award so many times in a row, but it’s also the only one to have received it since TripAdvisor inaugurated the ‘waterparks’ category five years ago. Blanca Zayas, Communications Director at TripAdvisor Spain, confirmed: “Siam Park has achieved what no other theme park in the world has achieved: to position itself as the best waterpark for the fifth consecutive year in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards, an honour that gives us a great reason for pride here in Spain. She added that “positioning itself as number one for
so many years in a row is a quality seal recognised by users around the world and will undoubtedly open more doors to both national and international tourism”. The news, received with great joy, comes in the middle of the presentation and opening of two new attractions. Patong Rapids is a new Siam Park challenge that breaks with all the moulds, surpassing the already incredible Mekong Rapids. It runs over a 235 metre course and includes an area of complete darkness. With a capacity of 1,200 people per hour, it minimises waiting time to enable Park visitors to enjoy its incredible switchback curves to the limit, and includes impressive disc floats that allow you to experience a unique feeling of speed and adrenaline. Coco Beach is a new children’s playground that will allow youngsters to experience great adventures with their families. You will be able to enjoy new and incredible sensations in the new over 1,000 m2 wave pool, suitable for the younger members of the house, simulating the famous ruins of Angkor Wat.

The surgical treatment of Pterygium This article contains the information about the reasons, conditions, results, risks and limitations of the surgical treatment of pterygium.
P
TERYGIUM is a benign, not cancerous, wing shaped (“petyrigion” is the ancient Greek word for “wing”) tumour of the conjunctiva (which is the superficial membrane that covers the surface of the eye).
The body of the wing is easily visible as a slight redness on the “white” part of the eye, usually on the nasal side. The whitish, irregular, bulbous summit of the wing is directed to the centre of the cornea (the main, anterior, lens of the eye). It is a very frequent tumour, particularly in adults living in hot and sunny areas as it is the case in south of Tenerife. Congenital forms of this tumour are very aggressive and, fortunately, rare. The most frequent form is the one that develops in persons exposed to ultra-violet (UV) rays of the sun during leisure activities (beach, sunbathing, nautical water ski, surf, windsurf, kite surf, diving, rowing, delta plan, hiking, alpinism etc.) or for professional reasons (marine fishing, open air agriculture and constructions etc.). Trachoma (that is also a disease of sunny countries) and the exposition to infra-red (IR) rays produced by high degree heat (pastry cookers, bakers, pizzaïolos, firemen, welders, glaziers, workers in steel industry etc.) and to irritating products (natural or industrial dust, sand, cement etc. ) are also predisposing factors of this tumour. UV and IR filtering sunglasses is a good prevention mean.
Why operate?
Left without treatment, the pterygium, initially limited to the conjunctiva, extends progressively towards the centre of the cornea and becomes annoying by its unaesthetic appearance and the occurrence of chronic mechanical irritation due to the increase of its thickness. The extension towards the centre of the cornea can lead to visual, sometimes disabling, defects. Surgery is the only way to remove this tumour.
The operation
It is performed while the patient is installed on the back, in a sterile environment, under surgical microscope. • Anaesthesia: it is done by an injection of anaesthetic near the lesion. • Technical procedure: Its aim is the complete excision of the lesion. There is no opening of the eyeball. Chronologically, the steps of the procedure are: Disinfection, anaesthesia with drops and injection in the area of the lesion
and the graft, incision, removal of the tumour tissue with a security healthy tissue zone, debridement of the healthy tissue, use of medication reducing the risk of recurrence, reconstitution of the conjunctival plan by a graft of conjunctiva taken from the same eye, closure with absorbable sutures, disinfection, optional eye-pad or eye-cup. The total duration of presence in the clinic is approximately 1 hour. The time spent in the operating theatre is one hour of which 40 minutes occur in the operating room. The residues of stitches, if any, are removed 1 to 4 weeks later. If the lesion has an unusual appearance, an analysis in the laboratory of pathology can be performed to determine its exact nature. It is the patient’s responsibility to contact later the laboratory in order to get the results.
Usual postoperative course
The postoperative routine is: Swelling of the eyelids, redness, discharge, watery eyes with a bit of blood, sensitivity to light, sensation of sand and, depending on the sensitivity of the patient, light to heavy pain. These inconveniences are especially encountered on the first 3 post-operative days and fade gradually over a week. The sensation of sand, due to the knots of the sutures, can last several weeks, until they are absorbed or are removed by your eye doctor. The redness fades gradually over the weeks following the disappearance of the sutures.
The complications of the operation
Although it is perfectly standardized and followed by good results, this type of operation is no exception to the general rule that there is no surgery without risk. It is not possible for any ocular surgeon to ensure formally the success of a surgical intervention.
The patient should be aware that • During the anaesthesia and sometimes
despite the anaesthesia, during the operation itself, there is a hazard of discomfort and pain. This risk depends on the patient’s responsiveness to the anaesthetic molecule. This risk is unpredictable. • In any local anaesthesia and all surgical procedures, there is a hazard of local complications, bleeding and infection and general intolerance that can lead to a severe shock. The risk of these complications is unpredictable. It is so exceptional that it is impossible to quantify. • After any surgery, there is a hazard of inadequate or excessive scarring, which can lead to unaesthetic scarring. This risk is higher on dark skinned or regularly exposed to sunlight patients. It is not quantifiable.
• After removing a tumour, there is a hazard of recurrence leading to further surgery. This risk is unpredictable but has been estimated globally between 8 and 19%, depending on the geographic location. Sun exposure increases this risk. The risk of occurrence is high when the exposition to the above mentioned risk factors happens during childhood.
To what must the patient be careful to, before, during and after the operation? THE EVENING BEFORE THE OPERATION:
Any make-up should be removed. The hair and face, especially the eyelids and eyelashes, and the whole body should be washed with shampoo or soap then rinsed generously. The same thorough washing and rinsing should be repeated then the whole body should be dried with a clean towel. The sleep should be done with clean nightclothes and bedding. It is advisable not to take any Aspirin and other blood fluidifying drugs the day before and the day of the operation. Aspirin and other blood fluidifying drugs may be taken the day after the operation. The matter of Aspirin and other blood fluidifying drug should be discussed with the patient’s General Practioner.
THE DAY OF THE OPERATION AND DURING THE WEEK FOLLOWING IT:
On the morning of the day of the operation, upon awakening, any make-up residues should be re-removed carefully. The thorough double shower, as described above, should be repeated. Clean underwear and clothes should be worn. The breakfast and regular medications, except Aspirin and other blood fluidifying drugs, should be taken. All regularly taken medications should be brought to the Eye Clinic. During the operation, the patient is requested to keep calm and strictly follow the instructions given by the Eye Doctor. After the operation, the Eye Doctor prescribes eye drops or eye ointment, to be put on the operated eye, usually during 7 days. The presence of an aiding person is advised during the remainder day of the operation. A little bleeding and swelling (haematoma) of the eyelid should not worry nor keep the patient from following the treatment. In case of pain, one to three Paracetamol tablets per day, for up to three days, may be taken. It is, as always, strongly advised not to rub the eyes. If a protection is placed on the eye, it should be kept throughout night sleep or nap. The plasters should be changed after each application of ointment. The plasters stick best on a skin previously washed with soap or a gently rubbed with an alcoholic perfume. Visual activities, professional and of leisure, are allowed as long as dirt and dust do not reach the eye. Wearing sunglasses is, as always, advisable when exposed to sunlight. The patient should contact the eye doctor immediately in case of * Breathing difficulties. * General malaise. * Fever. * Persistent bleeding. * Continued strong pain lasting more than 2 hours. PUT YOUR TRUST IN ARTEDENTAL
Dental implants? First think about which clinic you are going to choose D ENTAL implants are, today and according to experts, the best solution to the loss of teeth.
It is practically imperceptible that it is an artificial substitute. Unlike dentures or artificial bridges, they are “bolted” to the bone, and therefore do not move. But the best thing of all and an aspect the patient does not usually value is its functionality: they behave like natural teeth. The bite is the same thanks to the adjustment of the dentist and the prosthetist and do not allow the loss of bone mass or the remains of food being introduced into the cavities, preventing infections. These “screws” are made of biocompatible materials that prevent the rejection of our organism, such as titanium. Its function is to replace the root of a lost tooth. The abutment is attached to it, a piece of high precision that connects this root with the crown or tooth. Currently implants are no longer a luxury item, but do not let yourself be seduced by excessively reduced prices. The advisable thing is to go to clinics with experience, where the responsible ones are experts and the materials of first quality. When the operation is performed by a prestigious dentist with the best materials, provided that the patient meets the necessary conditions, implants are a long-term solution, a factor that ultimately results in a lower cost. Víctor Cubillo, surgeon, implantologist and medical director of the Artedental clinic in Tenerife, one of the centres with the longest trajectory in this specialty, explains what should be the steps to follow in implant placement: “In the first place, you should always do clinical and radiological exam to determine the most appropriate solution “. Implants and prostheses must be adapted to the conditions of each patient, so do not rely on clinics that advertise fixed and very low cost offers. “After the analysis, the tooth or affected teeth are removed and the implant is screwed to the bone. This operation lasts between two and three hours,
and despite appearing complex, it is one of the simplest and with less risk. In general, a specialist administers local anesthesia. The patient is conscious but does not feel pain. Finally a provisional or definitive prosthesis is placed, depending on the system that the patient chooses or that the dentist recommends,” continues the director of Artedenal. Once the operation is finished, the implant must be integrated into the bone, which is its support. The healing and integration period can last between three and six months. Then we proceed to place the final prosthesis if there is a provisional, manufactured and carved by the prosthetics. It is essential to have technicians of great skill capable of making the visible part as similar to natural teeth in terms of textures, colour and shape; and it is not an easy task. “In Artedental we have the master Fernando Griffón, considered one of the best prosthetists in Spain,” explains Cubillo. These technicians must work in true detail. They mill, they carve, they paint. Each shape, each flute, each colour is essential for the piece to mimic a real denture. And not any denture, but the one that best fits the aesthetics and physiology of each person. It is a work of incredible precision. Griffón’s background and skills have positioned him as an ambassador in Spain for the BDT technique, which uses the Pekk or BioHpp prosthesis as a structure, a highperformance polymer used to manufacture hip or spinal prostheses; and even airplanes. Its characteristics make it more aesthetic, solid, resistant and durable. No less important is the adjustment between prosthesis and implant, which must be exact and which is carefully designed by computer. The cost-benefit advantage of implants is unparalleled. There are cheaper solutions, but not in the long term, because of their quality and durability. The average price
in Spain of an implant according to the Spanish Society of Periodontics and Osseointegration (SEPA) ranges from 300 to over 1,000€. But you have to be very careful. In general, if a clinic offers an implant at 300€ , it refers only to the implant, not to the intervention, exams, visits or additional treatments;
and probably these implants are what is known in the industr y as “low cost”. A trusted clinic will never try to persuade the patient with false advertising techniques. Artedental, besides being specialised in dental implants, is a reference centre in the training of dentists for various implant houses.
“During the last twenty years, Artedental has not stopped renewing itself,” explains the center’s manager, Amaya Sáez. “We invest in the latest in technology and knowledge; and we demand a high degree of training among our workers. “ The appearance of the clinic is also different: from each cabinet
you can see impressive views of the Orotava Valley, because the entire facade is composed of windows that show from within, but not from outside. “Having the confidence of the patient is essential, and making it comfortable and peaceful is beneficial for both the patient and the dentist,” he concludes.

SPORTS PROJECT
ExpoVida Project eyes old Costa Adeje skypark A large group of athletes from Adeje received recognition from the ExpoVida Project, the local council and the University of La Laguna for their dedication and triumphs in the various modalities in which they compete at a regional, national and even international level. Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, councillor for education and Francisco García, vice-rector of the ULL, accompanied the representatives of ExpoVida, Raquel Arroyo and the architect Roberto Delgado during the awards ceremony that took place within the framework of the Summer University of Adeje. Adolfo Alonso thanked the collaboration and involvement of ExpoVida within the UVA , adding: “Thanks also to Expovida, the Summer University has been possible and we have also been able to bring two students from Senegal so that
they can live and enjoy an educational project like this one. We wanted the youth to know that they are already emerging in the world of sports in regional, national and international championships. They also knew about the Expovida project, which also wants to recognise these sportsmen and women who are committed to a healthy life.” Roberto Delgado, architect of the ExpoVida project, said: “ExpoVida is a project that arises from the idea of José Luis Cerveró how to make each of us value our

health and promote it and make it part of a larger group. ExpoVida aims to be linked to healthy tourism, not of people who are ill, but of those who want to go to a tourist destination to improve their health and quality of life. We
intend to make a place as a forum where all the agents that have to do with this issue come. Our intention is that the exhibition be ready in 2020. It will be located on the plot of the old Costa Adeje skypark.”
The commission includes the surveying and drafting of the execution projects of the north and south accesses and of the auxiliary buildings (race direction, closed park, technical verification, garage, medical centre, boxes modules 1, 2, 3 and 4, commercial building services and garage). Councillor for area Tenerife 2030, Antonio García Marichal and the Minister of Sports, Cristo Pérez, held a meeting with representatives of the
CABILDO AGREEMENT
Puerto’s new pool and Island Sports Centre is “closer than ever”
A
GREEMENT has been reached between Tenerife Cabildo and Puerto de la Cruz council for the execution of the works of complete remodelling of the municipal swimming pool, which will become the Island Swimming Centre.
The project has an estimated budget of 11.6 million euros, which will be paid by the insular administration. For the Mayor of the tourist city, Lope Afonso, this step represents “a new impulse within the consolidation and execution of a necessary and ambitious project for the city.” “With this agreement, we guarantee that when the new facilities start operating, our clubs should have special attention in the development of their activities, as well as all the previous entities and users,” he said. The final go-ahead is now only awaited over the whole plot from Spain’s coastal department. Councillor of Urbanism, Juan Carlos Marrero said: “This is necessary in order to be able to bid for the work and to start as soon as possible, as it already has the necessary sector reports. We are in a position to say that at this moment, the process is almost complete and that the sports pool, the new Island Sports Centre is closer than ever.” Puerto council said it was aware of the delays and apologised to users but added: “It is important to note that the processing of a work with a cost that reaches 11.6 million euros and in which four administrations are working at the same time has a complexity that we have been able to coordinate to reach the current moment.”
Insular Federations of Motoring and Canar y Islands of Motorcycling and the collective ‘We want a speed circuit in Tenerife ‘to publicise this initiative that was approved at the last session of the Governing Council. The Insular Corporation has updated the design of the International Motor Park of Tenerife with the aim of adjusting the current regulations of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) and guaranteeing the highest level of homologation that both organisations demand. Last October, the Cabildo commissioned a technical engineering company specialising in circuits to verify and comply with the motor circuit with the current sports regulations in order to guarantee the technical and sporting viability of the project. These specialists advised to make some small adjustments that are essential to obtain the highest level of homologation currently required by the FIA and the FIM. The Cabildo reiterates its commitment to build the International Motor Park of Tenerife, so it has planned an investment of around five million euros in this year’s budgets. This will not only meet a historical demand of the motor sector of the island but will bring economic development and employment to the island of Tenerife.

Granadilla rewards local athletes in Espiritu Triabona 2018
O
RGANISERS of the Espiritu Triabona 2018 presented in the Plaza de San Antonio in Padua, the trophies to the fastest athletes of Granadilla in its last edition held on June 2nd. Those present included sports councillor, Sara Cano Delgado, and members of the directive of the organising club, Alexander Pérez, Germán Díaz and Juanjo Quintero. The race was organised by the Club Deportivo Espíritu Triabona, in collaboration with Granadilla de Abona council, along with more than 40 volunteers, Local Police and Civil Protection of San Miguel
de Abona. As for the winners, in the women’s category, Ana Boullon Sabin of C.D. Vallivana, was the fastest Granadilla runner in the 10 km distance, and Pedro Eloy Martín Yanes from the host club of the Triabona Spirit, the fastest in the 5 kilometre race, in addition to the bronze of his category M40 veterans. It should be noted thatthis is not the first time both Boullón and Martín have won this trophy as best local athletes. They have already done so in other editions of the Granadilla event. In fact, Pedro Martín has participated four times in La Espíritu Triabona, all in the 5-kilometre modality and has been among the 15 best in the general classification, and even on June 6, 2015 in his best state of form and version was third in the general and second in its categor y with a time of 16:35, his best record in Granadilla de Abona of all time. That year, the gold went to Carlos Martín and Juan Jesús Casanova took silver.

Good news for Cajamar Tenerife Bluetrail as plans take shape for 2019 edition
T
HE Cajamar Tenerife Bluetrail 2019, the annual event organised by the Cabildo de Tenerife to be held on June 8th, will have points awarded by the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) in all its modalities.
The Media version has obtained a point from the prestigious association, which gives it an added incentive to this modality of 20 km. Thus, the Ultra version (102 km) will have five points, while the Trail (67 km) three points, the Marathon (43 km) two points and the Media (20 km) one point.
Granadilla launches gym on the beach
G
RANADILLA has launched a new edition of the beach maintenance gymnastics programme.
The initiative takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during the months of July, August and September in the morning from 9am to 1pm. Around 200 older people joined this initiative this year, which also has a transport service that runs through the different districts of the municipality, thus facilitating the participation of those who do not have other means of travel to the Granadilla coast. The Mayor,José Domingo Regalado welcomed the large group destined for fun and exercise by the sea throughout the summer. And sports councillor Sara Cano added: “The main objective is to maintain an active life and healthy habits.” The programme has two monitors who are responsible for directing the different types of activities that are developed.
ITRA aims to give voice to the actors of trail running to promote their strong values, their diversity, the safety of the races and the health of the runners. It also aims to contribute to the development of trail running and facilitate dialogue with national or international institutions interested in this sport. Meantime, the Centre for Initiatives and Tourism (CIT) of Puerto de la Cruz distinguished the Cajamar Tenerife Bluetrail as part of the annual awards ceremony held at the Atlantic Mirage Suites & Spa hotel in La Paz. The CEO of Ideco, Eusebio Díaz, was commissioned to receive the award “for the organisation of an international test of great significance, which combines sports, tourism and sustainability, with Puerto de la Cruz as its destination.” The Cajamar Tenerife Bluetrail follows the Manual of Good Mountain Racing Practices in Protected Natural Spaces of the
Spanish Mountain Federation (FEDME), allowing the development of a sport activity by the natural environment to be compatible with the conservation of the heritage values of the protected spaces. At the same time, it transports to the exterior the natural charms that the Island possesses with its more than one thousand kilometers of trails in order to attract a tourism that is increasingly loving nature. The Cajamar Tenerife Bluetrail will be present at the Ultra Trail Show of the UTMB (Mont Blanc) that is held from August 28th to 31st to publicice the race at an international level. Thus, there will be a raffle for a free registration for each modality and a trip will be raffled (registration, transfer and accommodation) among the people who attend the Tenerife test stand. The Cajamar Tenerife Bluetrail 2019 has the sponsorship of the Cajamar Canarias Foundation, Turismo de Tenerife and Promotur and the collaboration of the Volkswagen Comerciales Canarias and Hospiten. Registration for the test will open on September 1st through the web www.tenerifebluetrail.com
Spanish house price data published in June 2018
The SPI House Price Index Tracker plots the progress of the six most-watched house price indices in Spain, and brings them together in the chart above. The following residential property price indices were released in June 2017 (all figures show year-on-year percentage change): The National Institute of Statistics (INE) index +6.2% in the first quarter, with new home prices up 5.7% and resales up 6.3% The Association of Spanish Notaries index 0.9% in April The Idealista.com property portal asking price index +7.8 in May The Tinsa index based on property valuations carried out by the company +4.2% in May As I always point out, these national indices don’t tell us anything about local markets, but they do give us some idea of where we are in the property market cycle. With the exception of the volatile index published by the notaries, which seems to go up and down like a yoyo, all of the main indices now show Spanish house prices as rising in what looks like a wellestablished recovery. The INE also publish a regional house prices index illustrated in the following chart showing Q1 2018 in red, and Q4 2017 in orange for all Spain’s autonomous regions. House prices are rising in all regions, but that’s where the similarities end. This chart clearly shows Spain’s two-speed housing market, with double digit increases in hot markets like Madrid, the Balearics, and Catalonia, whist prices are rising by less than one percent in the slow lane where you find Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha.
Tinsa Spanish House Price Index The Spanish house price index published by Tinsa – one of Spain’s biggest appraisal companies – also shows house price changes by area, with the big cities (mainly Barcelona and Madrid) up 6.8% in May, the Mediterranean coast up 3%, and the Balearic and Canary Islands up 2%.

Spanish housing market expansion continues in May There were 51,896 sales in total, including social housing, with resale apartment transactions up 6.7% whilst new flat sales were down 12.7%, and single family homes up 16.3%. The Spanish housing market is now into its fifth year of expansion since the market turned the corner at the start of 2014, as illustrated by the chart above. How long will this expansion last? As the next charts show, both sales and house prices are still a long way from the peak of the boom years, and although those years are not a healthy benchmark, the big gap suggest there is still some room for growth on both fronts, assuming the Spanish economy continues to recover.
The Spanish housing market expanded by 7.7% in May (7.3% seasonally adjusted), according to the latest data from the Association of Spanish Notaries
The notaries’ latest report also reveals that average house prices increased by 0.6% to 1,372 €/ m2, and mortgage lending increased by 9.3%.
