Green campaigners claim:

“The beach is not a sewer!”

E

NVIRONMENTAL campaigners have stormed some of the busiest beaches in Tenerife to protest about “contamination” and the negative effects of mass tourism. Greenpeace said it effectively “closed” three beaches as a result of their demonstration involving beacons and banners which read “Beach polluted by wild urbanism” and “The beach is not a sewer.” “The beaches of Tenerife are systematically contaminated by the strong human pressure they suffer,” said a spokesperson for the goup which is calling for ugent action. Greenpeace says it wants “a correct purification of 100 per

cent of the wastewater that is discharged into the sea, putting an end to the contamination of beaches and marine ecosystems.” In a statement, the environmentalists said: “This form of protest is not coincidental: administrations have already closed the beaches recurrently for years due to high levels of contamination, either by the presence of potentially toxic microorganisms such as E. coli or

cyanobacteria, or by fuel spills. But coastal ecosystems, beaches and the species that inhabit them cannot escape the consequences of pollution.” The campaigners targeted La Tejita and El Médano (in Granadilla de Abona) and Valle de Güímar (in Candelaria). “These, like the rest of the Canarian beaches, are some of the most visited beaches in Spain due to their great beauty, but they suffer recurrent pollution, either due to wastewater discharges or leaking fuel pipes that supply the islands,” the protestors claimed. “Due to the tremendous increase in human con-

structions (housing, hotels, industrial estates and infrastructures), there are not enough sanitation systems to purify the enormous amount of water consumed by the large increase in population, es-

pecially during the holiday period. These constructions also need to be supplied with fossil fuels, which reach the islands through pipes often installed in fragile natural environments and that present significant risks of discharges.” Greenpeace said that according to data from the Canar y Government, the archipelago currently has a total of 394 discharges of water to the sea. Of these, 277 are not authorised, that is, they discharge untreated water. In addition, a total of 69 discharges go directly to bathing beaches. Only in Tenerife there are a total of 172 discharges, of which 113 are not authorised. “The discharges of untreated wastewater are illegal, as has been ruled by the European Parliament, and pose a risk to marine eco-systems and the health of the population,” the statement continued. “Spain was already denounced to the European Commission in 2011 because 43 municipalities with more than 15,000 inhabitants did not comply with the European regulation on water purification that came into force in 2000. In 2018 there are still nine municipalities without comply-

ing with the regulations, so that they have received a fine of 12 million euros, which will be increased by 11 million more for every six months of delay that they delay in complying with it. Among the municipalities that fail to date is the Valle del Güimar, which although phase I of the works has already begun to build the treatment plant, until it completes Phase II, it will not have the capacity to properly purify all the waters of pouring. According to the central government, the full execution of the sentence will not occur before 2019, that is, with a delay of 18 years over the deadline set in the Directive (on December 31, 2000).” Greenpeace says: “The natural wealth of the Canary Islands and the beauty of its beaches is the basis of its economic development, which is why its long-term sustainability is essential. A development model based on conservation is the best means to ensure its future. The brake on unbridled urbanisation, betting on sustainable tourism and the purification of water must be political priorities.”

Police alert over new on-line extortion scam

T

HE National Police are warning of a new criminal form of extortion on-line.

Agents specialised in fighting cybercrime have detected a considerable increase in cases of this variety of “sextorsión”, in which criminals send emails that include personal passwords of victims. The email account redesabiertas@policia.es receives about 100 communications per day on possible cases that are analyed individually. The well-known “sextorsión” is a type of extortion developed in recent years through the internet. It consists in threatening the users with the publication of photos, videos or information about their privacy, obtained without prior consent, and they request an economic amount in exchange for not making it public. The scammers tell their victims that they have obtained

the password of their emails or they claim to have installed malware on a pornographic web pages supposedly visited. They are also told that they have obtained personal images or videos after activating their computer’s webcam when they visited those pages. The “extortionists” request payments in bitcoins to different virtual purses so as not to spread the images, having to pay between 400 and 2,900 dollars. The victims have a margin of 24 hours to make the payment indicating that, in case of not doing so, they will spread the videos to their acquaintances. National Police warn that it is really a social engineering campaign. There is no video of the users threatened or malware installed on the web pages allegedly visited, only

“PROTOCOL NEEDED”

having as a data of the victims a fraudulently obtained password. Apparently, the password would have been obtained due to massive leaks that occurred years ago on the

Internet, which is why the password provided to users, which they claim to have obtained by using malicious software, is nothing other than a password.

The National Police say........ 1. Do not be alarmed or consider the threat as real. 2. Do not make any requested payment. 3. Don’t reply to the mail or received mails or engage in any type of conversation with the “extortionists”. 4. Block and mark as spam the sender of the emails. 5. Distrust any mail that may seem strange and of unknown origin 6. Do not “click” on links of the received mail body. 7. Do not open attachments sent from the received email. 8. Renew the password of email, computer and computer applications regularly and establish strong passwords. 9. Keep the computer equipment updated.

They say he was verbally abused and spat at by three individuals during an incident in Candelaria. The Federation of Transport of Inter-Union Canaria has expressed outrage at the “unfortunate” situation suffered by the driver on route 122, Candelaria-Santa Cruz, on the occasion of the concert celebrated in the Plaza de la Patrona. A special service was put on by the company for the musical event. The union claims the buses could not cope with the huge number of people and has criticised safety and lack of forward planning. They say the abused driver called for help but had to wait too long for the police to arrive. By the time they did, the three

individuals had escaped with money stolen from the cab. The bus suffered damage and a replacement had to be called in to transfer passengers on board at the time of the incident. Intersindical Canaria wants CCTV cameras put at the disposal of the police and the courts. In addition, it urges Titsa’s management to draw up an effective security protocol to be implemented at public events to prevent anything similar happening again. According to the union, “while this protocol is not completed for the island of Tenerife, the Titsa staff will not work in any event in the interests of the health and safety of the workers of the company and the provision of a better quality public service to citizens.”

IDEAS WANTED

New blue parking zone for San Miguel de Abona

T

ENERIFE Cabildo is preparing for the new blue parking zone in the municipality of San Miguel de Abona.

Local councillor, Efraín Medina said this action will allow the supply and installation of vertical signage and of the hourly parking meters in San Miguel de Abona, as well as the execution of several road-works, with the aim of transforming a total of 46 existing parking spaces into controlled parking. The work will also include vertical and horizontal signage accordingly, as well as parking for people with disabilities. “With this action it is not intended to create new parking areas, but the idea is to signal in blue those 46 existing places, located in five areas of the centre of San Miguel (TF-28), from the crossing with calle Alfonso Mejíashasta to the crossing with calle Las Morales, in which the parking time will be

limited by the installation of three independent parking meters, fed with solar energy,” she explained. The establishment of these measures of limited parking will favour the rotation of the car park and a greater fluidity and, with this, an increase in activity of the San Miguel open zone, she added. The projecct, whose budget amounts to 22,791 euros, will be financed by the Cabildo, which contributes 13,025 euros, and by San Miguel de Abona council, which allocates the remaining 9,765 euros. The work has a deadline of three months. The ultimate goal is to enhance the image of the municipality and provide an aesthetic appropriate to the environment of this commercial urban space, the engine of the economy.

Cabildo invites entries for sustainable tourism competitions T

HE island’s Cabildo, through Turismo de Tenerife, has launched a new edition of the ‘Contest of Good Practices in Tourism Sustainability’, aimed at the business and public sector. Entries are also invited for a second competition of the most sustainable tourism in which people can contribute their ideas related to tourism management more respectful of the environment. The deadline for submitting proposals to both competitions will remain open until next October 14th and the rules and conditions of participation can be consulted at the following address: https: //www.webtenerife.com/sostenibilidad. Tourism councillor, Alberto Bernabé said: “The objective is to promote sustainable tourism, promote cooperation in the sector, make visible actions respectful with the environment and involve the public in its management.” This edition also comes with new features since, on this

occasion, the rules are strictly linked to the sustainable development goals. The socalled Agenda2030, agreed by the international community, has 17 objectives that include everything from the elimination of poverty to the fight against climate change, education, women’s equality, the defence of the environment or the design of our cities. “Tourism of Tenerife has prioritised those objectives which have a direct link with the tourism sector, those related to the sustainable management of water, the economy, employment, oceans, seas and marine resources or terrestrial ecosystems,” he explained. In this new edition, creativity and innovation will also be scored, as well as technical

and organisational feasibility and economic viability. Likewise, the inclusion in the projects of the measurement and compensation of the carbon footprint will be positively valued. All the proposals will be evaluated by a jury of experts and, in the case of the contest directed to the population, will also be submitted to the popular vote. The professional com-

petition will include four different categories so that the entire sector that represents and each participant compete under equal conditions. These are: good sustainable practice in local administrations, better product or sustainable services in the nature tourism sector, good sustainable practice in tourist accommodation (hotel and non-hotel) and best sustainable tourism practice.

RONA council is preparing for the new central lighting of avenida Chayofita in Los Cristianos.

All 25 lights are LEDs of low consumption and are part of the restructuring of this area, which has included modifications to the circulation, replacement of the existing footbridges with a new, totally accessible one and the lighting of the annexed areas, improving visibility and safety. Converted into one of the main communication arteries of Arona, avenida Chayofita in Los Cristianos supports a significant daily traffic density, as well as housing different

educational and sports centres, used by thousands of people. However, until now it did not have a central lighting system that would improve the visibility of drivers and reinforce safety, two of the objectives that are sought with this action, which falls within the reform of this area, one of the main showcases of Los Cristianos, which has been undertaken in recent months. “In this way, in addition to

Specifically, this new action consists of the assembly of 25 points of light with two luminaries each, equipped with LED technology of 106 watts each, all with an investment of 101,793 euros and generating significant annual energy savings. The Mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, explained the importance of “undertaking,

step by step, the transformation of avenida Chayofita which is not only an important means of communication but a great showcase for Los Cristianos and a public space through which thousands of people pass ever y day to go to educational and sports centres.” Deputy mayor and councillor for the environment and

We had to revert to improve the security, visibility and also the aesthetic aspect of Los Cristianos, all of which results in an improvement in the quality of life.”

Arona dog owners targeted in new environmental campaign

A

new environmental campaign “Your dog, your responsibility. Do not leave a mark “has been launched in Arona.

The aim is to raise awareness among pet owners about the need to take care of public spaces, for which a specific cleaning kit will be provided to all residents of the municipality when they go to the Citizen Service . After two months of intense activity, the “Arona, we take care of you all” campaign arrived at the beach of Las Vistas, where a sculpture of abandoned and collected objects was exhibited on the municipality’s coast. Arona is a municipality with almost 100,000 inhabitants and has an estimated population of around 18,000 dogs, of which there are barely only 2,600 registered, despite the legal obligation on the part of the owners to register pets in the offices of the Citizen Attention Service (SAC). The lack of responsibility or specific materials by some owners can lead to the deterioration of public spaces, squares and gardens, among others. With the intention of reversing this situation, the Department of Environment of the City of Arona has launched the campaign “Your dog, your responsibility. Do not leave a trace, “with which it aims to raise awareness among pet owners of their responsibility and care for them and their environment. Within the framework of this

campaign, which is part of the “Arona, we take care of you all” programme, this municipal area has begun the distribution of a specific cleaning kit to all those residents who come to register their dog at the different SACs, where they will be provided with a bottle suitable to be filled with water and vinegar for the disinfection of the urine and a bag dispenser for the collection of excrement in public spaces. To register the pet, you only need to identify the owner and the health card of your dog, as well as the corresponding licence if it belongs to one of the breeds that from the point of view of the law is considered potentially dangerous. Councillor for the environment, Yurena García recalled that “chipping your dogs, their census or taking charge of their urine and excrement benefits, first of all, the quality of life of our pets. It is to treat them with dignity and fair treatment, but, in addition, it is an obligation of respect towards the rest of the residents of the municipality. “ “In Arona,” he added, “we have made a great effort to strengthen the services of cleaning and collection of waste, modernising the fleet and incorporating 50 workers, but this work requires the collaboration of all the

residents who have dogs, a minority of whom does not assume its responsibility with its pets and with the rest of the population “. Yurena Garcia recalled that “the problem generated by urination and droppings is growing because the increase in population is accompanied by a significant increase in dogs.” However, Arona was increasingly providing specific spaces for them. An increase that will be accompanied by specific spaces for them, as the new public spaces and parks in which the City Council works already have In recent weeks, this

The public space can be used as a study hall from 10am to 9pm. These new hours will be in force until the end of the year and if successful, they will continue in 2019 as well. Culture councillor Sandra Rodriguez said all the early indications suggested the new hours had been very well received. In addition, during the present summer days, until midSeptember, the library also remains open in the afternoon, from 1.30pm. to 7.45pm in identical conditions, being able to be used as a study room and book consultation, in addition to the use of the wifi signal. functions will be that of street service and citizen service. The act was attended by the Mayor of the municipality of Los Realejos, Manuel Dominguez, councillor for security and institutional relations of Puerto, Pedro González, the Chief Commissioner, José Luis Rodríguez, and the Chief Inspector of the Police Station, Juan Carlos Piñero. The Chief Commissioner said he felt satisfied to be able to count on more agents who “will reinforce the presence in the streets”, given that the majority will be destined to “citizen security tasks”. José Luis Rodríguez stressed the “good objective security indexes” and the need to “also increase the security perceived by the citizen so that he sees more policemen in uniform on the street.” For the Mayor of the municipality of Los Realejos, Manuel Dominguez, the citizen has “the need to perceive security” and stressed how secure the municipalities of Puerto de la Cruz and Los Realejos are. However, it was still necessary to ensure the local police staton had the greatest number of staff possible and the best conditions. Sr. Gonzalez welcomed the new agents and wished them well with their training. Both municipalities, Puerto de la Cruz and Los Realejos, have experienced a decrease in crime figures, dropping by about ten per cent.

La Orotava saves lighting energy equivalent to 200 homes

L

A Orotava is committed to a 100 per cent clean energy consumption and is continuing to take measures to help the environment.

The concessionaire company, Effico, will invest more than 1.2 million euros in the improvement and sanitation of public lighting. One of the requirements given the highest priority when awarding the maintenance service for public lighting again was its contribution to a sustainable municipality, said services councillor, Felipe David Benítez. Therefore, in this new contract, for four years and with the possibility of extending two more, it is planned to invest more than 1,255,000 euros in the improvement of the public lighting network, which is added to the annual maintenance amounting to 1,246,443 euros. “For years, work has been done on the modernisation

process to reduce consumption and expense of the bill and among other things there has been a progressive renovation of mercury and sodium vapor lamps to avoid light pollution,” the council has explained. “More than 2,000 new lights of latest technology LED in different municipal dependencies, schools, streets and squares of the municipality have been installed.” The new equipment is managed by remote control from a computer terminal and this also allows controlling operations such as the reduction in the level of lighting in those sections and times in which it is feasible. Other actions within the contract are the renovation of the lampposts of the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Likewise, the maintenance of photovoltaic

and wind turbine installations, sealing of manholes to avoid the theft of cables, maintenance of all traffic lights and generator sets and so on. In the last three years of management of public lighting, also through Effico, more than 2,000 breakdowns have been resolved, 2,300 repairs were carried out, 2,218 maintenance and cleaning actions and 900 new

Two men, aged 45 and 48 and both of Spanish nationality, were arrested in Santa Cruz and a third person has appeared in court in connection with the ring. National police launched an investigation following a string of incidents in the city involving people breaking into parked cars. However, during the course of the investigation, it was learned that the people under suspicion had moved to Fuerteventura, which is why the investigation was extended to that island. From the investigations, it was concluded that several of the effects intervened had been stolen in Fuerteventura. “In the course of the proceedings, numerous postal packets coming from Fuerteventura to Tenerife were recovered, since the criminals sent the stolen goods through parcels through couriers,” said a police spokesman, Finally, the alleged perpetrators of the events were identified and after the arrest of two of them and house searches, more than 100 electronic devices (mobile phones, tablets, cameras), foreign currency in paper, credit cards and other effects were intervened.

All this has meant an annual saving of 318,726 Kwh, equivalent to about 200 homes. In the new contract, the objective is to overcome these figures, reducing consumption, with greater energy efficiency, thus improving the lighting of La Orotava. The council is also aiming to reduce light pollution to comply with the Canary Sky Protection Law. Likewise, local residents are being urged to think about their power consumption and caring for the environment.

In the first seven months of the year, 209,487 contracts have been made, which represents an increase of 4.28 per cent over the same period of 2017. The data published by the Canary Observatory of Employment (Obecan) show that the labour market of Tenerife has experienced an increase in the indefinite hiring during the first seven months of the year, reaching 12.4 per cent. This is due, mainly, to the effort in the creation of stable employment through the Revenue Pact. The incidental president of the Cabildo, Efraín Medina,

said that “we have established different lines to promote quality and indefinite employment, subsidising companies, facilitating training and helping people with integration difficulties with concrete actions.” Among the measures that Cabildo has taken to improve training and employment are the Action Plan for Employment and the Barrios por el Empleo initiatives: Together stronger, We are with them and job launchers, which are channeled through the Insular Canaria Foundation for Employment Training and Business Development (Fifede).

ANTIAGO del Teide council has recently awarded the work to carry out a complete Municipal Asphalting Plan which will begin shortly. The aim is to rehabilitate the paving of different streets as well as to carr y out numerous interventions to correct the problems with runoff and drainage of water. For this, the council is going to allocate an amount superior to one million euros to replace the surfaces of numerous streets of the municipality that are in bad state. Because of the number of roads which will be tacked, the project will be carried out in phases. Therefore, in order to improve the comfort and safety conditions of road users, asphalting works will be carried out in the streets of Arguayo, specifically, on Calle Candelaria; Las Loceras Street; Calle el Carmen; Calle el Cercado; San Luis Street; San Agustín Street; Horno de las Loceras Street; San Felipe Street; San Isidro Street, as well as Piedra Gorda Street and in the location of the Water Deposit and in Las Manchas, intervening in San Isidro Street; Los Laureles

Street and Bilma Street. As for the Valle de Arriba, the aforementioned paving plan includes San Fernando Street and the Camino Real as part of its execution plan, while in El Molledo it will be carried out in Calle Los Almendros, Calle la Calzada and Calle El Porvenir. The Retamar, will also constitute one of the phases of the asphalting plan, performing asphalt works on Los Angeles Street and San Juan Street. Finally, Tamaimo’s nucleus will host said action plan and will do so at Calle La Cerca, while in the case of La Caldera, it will be executed at Calle La Caldera and Calle Tajinaste. Regarding the actions that will be carried out within the asphalt plan, the work process will begin with the structural rehabilitation of the deteriorated areas through the elimination of the materials that make up the surface and its replacement. Once this has been carried out, the existing cracks will be sealed and the surface drainage elements will be rehabilitated.

Visitors want “Sea Market” to become year-round event

S

AN Juan de la Rambla council has brought the delights of the municipality and the ocean direct to local people and visitors in an unusual way. The local council’s tourism department recently staged the first “Mercado del Mar” or “Sea Market” to spotlight on the biodiversity of this area of the Tenerife coast which has warranted status as a special area of conservation. So much so, in fact, that it has been included in the Natura 2000 Network since September 2011 thanks to its unique natural species and habitats. From 11am in the morning until after 5pm in the afternoon, the hundreds of visitors who visited the coast of Las Aguas enjoyed 20 stalls in the main avenue, with samples of the flora and fauna which lives in the sea. These creatures

include the loggerhead turtle, a species in extinction in Europe, the Canarian lobster, giant anemones, leather sponges, reefs and submerged caves of scientific interest. The market also exhibited products from the garden through agroecological techni-

ques. Art was represented by local artisans, who exhibited their creations, from raffia, openwork and decorative items to jewellery and accessories in polymer clay. “The coast of San Juan de la Rambla has a wealth that in many cases remains unknown

to residents. This type of action allows us to bring to light all the municipality possesses. The tourists who attended congratulated us for the initiative encouraging us to make it permanent during the year,” said tourism councillor Cayetano Silva.

huge “sunshade” verandah is being constructed at Las Vistas beach in Los Cristianos.

A stainless steel pergola of 480 metres has been commissioned by the Department of Works and Infrastructures of Arona council at a cost of 121,400 euros. The initiative will allow this coastal area to have “a large shadow” located in the space where the assisted bathing service is provided and will be available for those with reduced mobility or allergic to the sun who want to enjoy the beach. “With this initiative we complement the services we offer in this coastal area, one of the most accessible beaches in Europe and which

has become a benchmark for both residents and visitors with functional diversity,” says the Mayor, José Julián Mena. “In addition, this initiative will help people with skin problems or allergies to the sun to enjoy the beach and the benefits of sea water.” The Mayor also stressed: “This local government is committed to accessibility, as well as a municipality with adapted public spaces that everyone can enjoy”.

Fisco, San Sebastian, Lavajo, Pheasant and Arboleda, in Cabo Blanco, as well as Amsterdam Avenue in Los Cristianos and Tiguanfaya de Chayofa Street. All this involves an investment of more than 686,000 euros framed in the #AronaAvanza programme. The Mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, underlined that in recent months there have been

It happened on forest track TF-373 in San José de Los Llanos in the municipality of El Tanque. Also hurt was a seven-year-old girl who, at the initial moment of assistance, presents a moderate pelvic trauma. She was flown to hospital in the emergency helicopter.

more than 20 per-formances in different disricts, which has allowed to renew a “network that was obsolete, outdated and that did not conform to the needs “of the population of Arona. “With this investment we continue to renew the supply network of our municipality, which is not only obsolete and with outdated materials, many of them made of fibre cement, but also does not meet the real needs of the population and that cause, among others, loss of pressure,” he said.

“In addition to all this, the network breaks down frequently, causing problems for residents. For this reason, with this package of works, which we will award in the coming weeks, we will resolve many inconveniences in a service that is fundamental and basic for residents and tourists,” “With each of these actions, we lay the foundations of the Arona of the future, with quality services that seek excellence”. The renovation and replacement of the supply network will take five months.

FRONTAL COLLISION

Three children hurt in fatal road accident

“SEVEN DEATHS NEED INVESTIGATING”

Arona council fights judge’s decision to archive building collapse case

A

RONA council has launched an appeal against the decision by a judge to archive the cause of the horrific building collapse in Los Cristianos in which seven people were killed.

T

HERE was tragedy on the TF-5 in Los Realejos when a 31-year-old man died and three children were injured.

The full frontal collision happened at Km 42 in the midafternoon. The nationality of the dead man was not specified but all three children were French. Two were girls, aged 15 and 12, and the third was a boy of 17. Their injuries were not lifethreatening. The Civil Guard attended, together with a doctor and nurse from Los Realejos health centre, the police and Tenerife fire brigade. Just after 4pm in the afternoon, the 112 emergency control centre was told there had been a frontal collision of two cars and that several people were injured of

different consideration. “The staff of the SUC, in collaboration with the doctor and the nurse of the aforementioned health centre, confirmed the death of the 31year-old male due to the severity of the injuries he presented and assisted the rest of the wounded who were transferred in the corresponding ambulances to Hospiten Bellevue,” said a spokesman. Consortium firefighters released the deceased’s body from inside the vehicle whilst the Civil Guard regulated traffic and instructed the corresponding proceedings. Road maintenance were also called in to to clean the road.

The municipal legal services department has filed the appeal before the Criminal Section of the Provincial Court in which they request the continuation of the procedure, opening of the oral trial and transformation into summary of this case. “The city council of Arona defends the existence of a possible crime of reckless homicide, punishable under Article 142 of the Criminal Code, and disagrees with the argument that there is difficulty in directing the imputation in a clear manner on one or several objective subjects, while requesting that the potential responsibility of the banking entity that carried out the first works, the company that executed them, as well as the subsequent work carried out by a cosmetics company and the professional who supervised them be investigated,” said a spokesman for the authority . The Julián José building collapsed on April 14th, 2016 and was one of the biggest ever disasters in Tenerife. Those who died were in their homes at the time and were

trapped in the rubble. It took the emergency services more than a week to find their bodies and caused widespread shock. The judge ruled it was too difficult to determine who or what was responsible for the collapse of the building. However, the City of Arona considers, on the one hand, that it is necessary to take into account not only the objective type of this crime, but the subjective type, which also includes the absence of intention or will and the breach of the care standard of the building, keys in subsequent

events, which resulted in the death of the seven victims of various nationalities. Imprudent homicide is punishable under article 142 of the Criminal Code. In addition, the municipal legal services do not share either that the fact that criminal responsibility may fall on one or several subjects or entities may mean the absence of liability and the dismissal of a case such as this, for which reason it requests the continuation of the procedure, opening of oral trial and transformation into summary.

Sunbeds at Playa Honda NEW FACILITIES

V

ISITORS to the south of Tenerife can now enjoy new beach facilities.

Arona council has recovered for public use a new area of the coast of the municipality, which has provided new services of sunbeds and umbrellas. Playa Honda is now available for use by residents and tourists, says the authority.

“The fact that there are fatalities, in the opinion of the City of Arona, should not lead to the dismissal of the case, but, on the contrary, to its transformation and prosecution to determine clearly what were the imprudences and their potential causes,” says the council. Arona wants the court investigation to continue and to look at all the works carried out at the flats and the supervisors of the projects subject to their collapse which eye witnesses described at the time as “crumbling like a pack of cards.”

MINISTRY WARNING

Study shows many forest fires are “the hand of man”

09

Anaga is a top priority for Santa “INTENSE PROGRAMME” Cruz

Firefighters warn:

S

PAIN’S Interior Ministry says the “hand of man” is behind most of the fires investigated and has warned: “These crimes do not go unpunished!” It is estimated that 30.4 per cent of the fires are intentional, either by arsonists, vandals or for hunting purposes. These intentional fires do not go unpunished and this is evidenced by the report of the Office of the Environment and Urban Planning which shows 163 people were arrested or investigated during the year 2018. The high temperatures this summer increase the risk of forest fires, which is why the Ministr y of the Interior is stressing that extreme precautions must be taken.

Only six per cent of the fires known by the Civil Guard were initiated by natural causes, so the vast majority have their origin in human activity. According to data from the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Civil Guard, 20 per cent of fires were motivated by accidental causes (machines or engines, power lines, cars), another 20 per cent by negligence (agricultural burning, machinery and engines, smokers, bonfires) and 30 per cent were intended (arsonists, vandalism or for hunting reasons).

“These figures show the need to remember that any attitude of this type puts human lives at risk and, in addition, causes environmental damage, sometimes irrecoverable,” said a spokesman. “The fires are not just statistics, hectares are burned and environmental surface razed. There is another factor that must be put in value, the human face of fires. Professionals who risk their lives to try to control them and, also, that of many citizens who have to leave their homes threatened by the flames, abandoning their belongings with the uncertainty of not knowing if they will find them on their return.”

ROBBERIES IN THE NORTH

Dangerous duo caught after spate of robberies

N

ATIONAL police have arrested two dangerous criminals for six robberies with violence in Santa Cruz and La Laguna

They are aged 41 and 43 and both come from the capital. The duo threatened victims

with a large-scale weapon and brandished a firearm which turned out to be simulated. In one of the thefts, one of

them forced the door of a driving school in broad daylight and stole more than 1,000 euros. In robberies with violence ,they accessed premises when there were no customers, threatened the sales staff, demanded money from the till or took it and went on the run. While one committed the act, the other remained on the street as a look-out. All these incidents took place in four days. The desire of the criminals was to collect money to pay for their “high consumption of narcotics,” say the police. The pair were caught after police launched a special operation in La Laguna and Santa Cruz.

Pay special attention to the regulations of the Autonomous Community on fire prevention and authorised periods to burn stubble. Avoid throwing cigarettes, garbage and, especially, glass bottles that create a magnifying effect with the sun. Do not light fires in the bush and nearby lands. Camping only in authorised areas, since these have protective measures against a possible fire and evacuation is easier. Notify 112 immediately if you discover the fire at the beginning. If you are surprised by a fire, avoid going into the forest. Always go through areas of high visibility and free of fuel. In case of emergency due to forest fire, always follow the instructions of the competent authorities. Keep in mind that high temperatures favor the risk of forest fires. Extreme precautions.

S

ANTA Cruz has promised to keep on improving the beautiful area of Anaga.

The city council says an “intense programme” of improvements has been underway “for years”, adding: “A good part of the demands of the platform “Together for San Andrés” is underway.” Local councillor, Carmen Delia Alberto said the project approved by the Municipal Government Board for the remodelling of the San Andrés sports centre and the tender for the works of the Cemetery Walk in Igueste were both in progress. Other actions include unlocking the access to the football field, channelling of the El Cercado ravine and reconditioning the surface of the sports field of Cueva Bermeja Alberto . “The doors of the city council will always be open so that residents and their representatives can present their concerns and move forward, from joint work and cooperation, in improving the quality of life of all of them,” she said. Just recently, a meeting was held with residents of San Andrés to approve various proposals related to trafficking and provision of parking spaces.

HE National Police have arrested the fugitive Guillermo Fernández Bueno, whose last known address was in Tenerife, in Senegal.

He was spotted trying to cross the border post of Karang using the identity of another person. The operation was carried out with the collaboration of the Interior Attaché of the Embassy of Spain in Senegal and the Senegalese Police. Bueno was wanted after he failed to return to prison after a seven-day leave in Cantabria where he was serving a sentence for two crimes of sexual assault and one crime of murder. PUERTO DE LA CRUZ

All Saints’ news

I

T has been very good for me to have family visiting over the last few months. Partly, of course, because it is lovely to see them, but also because it is an opportunity to see Puerto through their eyes. Without them Puerto would simply mean work – I am after all here to do a job. But now it means other things as well. One of my sons discovered Canarian banana cake, which is so much better than anything I can make myself. With another we took the little train to Loro Parque and wondered at all the parrots. We also admired all the parrots that gather in the grounds of the church which, to my shame, I had never really noticed before. And I have discovered that pushing a buggy up and down the hill, or carrying it down the steps, is something best left to someone younger and fitter than I am. I am very aware, though, that there are many people living here who no longer have family around them and I am trying to think of more ways to bring together people who might otherwise be on their own. One possibility is a monthly lunch club where we could all share a ver y simple meal in the church grounds. I know that there’s lots going on in the winter months, but for people on their own the time can still pass very slowly. If you have any suggestions along these lines, please do let me know. It has also been fun to mingle with holidaymakers down by the beach. When I was growing up in Brighton, the seafront was full of forbidden treats. Chief among them was candy floss (“it will rot your teeth”), which I

haven’t seen for years, as well as sticks of Brighton Rock (“it will break your teeth”) and mysterious bags of cockles (“you won’t like them”). And then of course there were the delights of the two piers, not all of them suitable for impressionable schoolgirls. Puerto’s visitors are pretty sophisticated by comparison. Back in the UK, with its recent extreme heat, churches have been encouraged to welcome in people who just want to be out of the sun for a while. And it’s surprising how many people will wander into a church while they are on holiday, regardless of the weather, to take time out just to be quiet – something which is not always easy in a busy working life. We do want to welcome everyone into our church for whatever reason. If you want to be sure that it will be open for you, give me a call and it will be. I am looking forward to a short trip home now, to meet up with family and friends and to see my lovely dog. Not to mention my lovely dentist. Enjoy the summer! EGUISE has received the Lanzarote Island Award 2018 for its 600 years of history.

The jury thus distinguishes the municipality that in 2018 celebrates the establishment of the Fuero de Niebla and the birth of the current Villa de San Miguel Arcángel de Teguise In the opinion of the judges, the municipality is worthy of the highest distinction and the highest public recognition due to the promotion work carried out by the city council to raise awareness of the great cultural heritage of the first medieval city of the Atlantic and the first capital of the islands. It was also agreed to award the Distinguished Tourism Awards 2018 to the airline Iberia Express, which has become one of the air transport companies that has increased the connectivity of the island, through its hub in Madrid, with other destinations offering competitive prices and within the reach of tourists who choose Lanzarote as a holiday destination. In the Events categor y, cultural or sports events of tourist interest, the winner was the Secret Garden located in the monument of Los Ajaches, which runs through ravines arid areas and has an important archaeological heritage in which there are caves, engravings, and traces of the old grazing. The jury has awarded the beauty of a plantation created almost on the shores of the Atlantic that captivates thousands of tourists who travel to the attraction. In the section of personalities, the distinction has fallen to the model and actor Jon Kortajarena who owns a house

The jury also agreed to grant a special mention to the Regulating Council of the Denomination of Wines of Lanzarote, the Malpeis brewery and the artist Rufina Santana. The awards will be delivered at the end of September during celebrations for World Tourism Day

This was the verdict of Cabildo president , Belén Allende and the director of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Luis Santana, after a working meeting in the Port of La Estaca. They were accompanied by the Mayor of Valverde, Daniel Morales. Both the Cabildo and the Port Authority have completed the major investments in infrastructures and services at the port, one of the main entry points to the island. Party boats reported for breaches

O

RGANISERS behind an illegal sea party on the protected island of Lobos face stiff fines after they were spotted by environmental officers.

The marine detachment of Corralejo, belonging to the Maritime Service (SEMAR) of the Civil Guard, has denounced a series of administrative irregularities committed by three recreational vessels - a catamaran, a sailboat and a semi-rigid boat - that were covered and anchored in the vicinity of the dock of Isla de Lobos whilst people on board enjoyed a fiesta. Officers have reported the boats for several breaches, including not presenting documentation of the vessels, lack of certification of two of the skippers and excess of people on board two of them, among others. Belén Allende said she would be holding a meeting with the recreational fishermen to discuss with them how to face the important investment in cost and maintenance that involves installing a “torito” for service of recreational and fishing boats. Once the programmed works are completed, the Port Authority will be in a position to tender the marina of the Port of La Estaca, with the attraction of being the “Atlantic corridor”. The president also reported that, finally, the Cabildo will shortly tender the completion of the works to improve the beach of La Estaca, after three years of procedures with Costas that have finally culminated with their approval to give continuity to these works. “ We can congratulate ourselves on having a first level facility vital for our development, which guarantees both the transport of passengers and goods to the island, and which entails many parallel business possibilities, as has already been seen with the case of tourism. cruises,

A large, safe port that allows not only to ensure the feeding of the island and the entry and exit of goods, but also to offer business opportunities, cruises, transit of sports boats etc,” she confirmed. The Port Authority said in the last year, no boat coming into El Hierro had been forced to turn round as had happened before. Traffic at La Estaca increased by 24.43% in 2017, with 167,691 passengers, compared to the 134.762 in 2016. Vehicles are also increasing, with 58,236 last year compared to the previous 47,606 (with an increase of 22.33 %). Merchandise traffic also increased, with 65,690 tons transported in 2017 and cruise tourism, with 12 stopovers in 2017 and 10,538 cruise passengers and 13 stopovers in 2018 and 6,450 passengers at the moment.

have any new leads. He pledged investigations like these never closed as there was always a chance a new clue would emerge which could help solve the mystery. However, that result at the moment was “im-possible.” Similarly, the investigation into the disappearance of Yeremi Vargas, who would this year have turned 19, is also open. He too disappeared from Gran Canaria 12 years ago. A link between the two cases has never been established.

Lanzarote Cabildo, which has responsibility for the tiny island, is promoting and supporting, through its Biosphere Reserve, corporate social responsibility projects with “exemplary initiatives such as the one that the Canary Islands Brewing Company in La Graciosa is carrying out since the beginning of this summer with a pioneering project in the Canary Islands.” This was explained by the president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés, during the presentation of the initiative by the person in charge of Corporate Affairs of this Canarian company, Luis Durango Pérez, and the director of Operations, Jorge

Francisco. The president congratulated this company “for its commitment to sustainable development and the insular environment reflected in the philosophy not only of production that has allowed in recent years to reduce the environmental footprint in the productive processes of its activity, but also by the numerous projects developed in terms of corporate social responsibility in the whole of the archipelago.” Specifically, they detailed that with this new action will stop generating more than 31,000 kilograms of waste per year of glass, cardboard and plastic in La Graciosa, with the

replacement of single-use beer bottles that are sent to the island by returnable containers. Sr, Gines said “This is extraordinary news that we must support and make known in an exemplary way because the care and respect for our territory and environment is everyone’s business, not only of the public administrations.” He said the Cabildo had been working for many years towards this aim, through the objectives set out in the ‘Strategy, Lanzarote 2020’ or the Biosphere Reserve Tourism Product Club, of which some 15 companies have already been certified, the numerous actions undertaken by the Volunteering ‘Together

We Biosphere’ involving both companies and an army close to 500 volunteers and actions of the ‘Plastic Zero’ campaign of the Reserve or other initiatives of this kind undertaken in recent years. Director of Operations of the Canarian Brewing Company, Jorge Francisco, thanked the authorities for their collaboration in disseminating the project, and explained that “the concern for sustainable development and the protection of the environment has led the Canary Islands Brewing Company to the recent start-up of this pioneering project in La Graciosa, aimed at improving waste management.”

Yet more accolades for Gran Canaria’s wines

T

HE wines of Gran Canaria are experiencing boom times and one producer is helping to lead the way.

Bodegas Tunte has obtained three meritorious awards in the World Extreme Wine Competition held in Italy, with two Gold Medals for the Oro Blanco and Valara wines and one Silver for Berode, explained the Cabildo’s food councillor, Miguel Hidalgo. This contest is reserved for wines produced in mountain regions or from so-called heroic crops, that is, those grown on terraces or terrains with more than 30 per cent decline, an altitude greater than 500 metres or on small islands . The wines of Gran Canaria, therefore, fall within the requirements of this contest that aims to reward the structural difficulties faced by wine growers to produce wine and highlight the unique characteristics of these products. The wine sector of Gran Canaria is experiencing a prosperous moment due to the efforts of recent years and the increase of last year’s harvest of 160,000 kilos. This bonanza is reflected in the obtaining of outstanding prizes for its wines in international competitions thanks to its quality and the particularity that the climate, its varieties and the volcanic earth give it. With these three new awards, Bodegas Tunte counts on four medals after having obtained for Valara another Silver award at the Muscats du Monde Annual Wine Competition in France. And this year in particular it has been loaded with recognitions, with excellent results for its three wines that have been scored in the International Wine Challenge Contest, the Brussels World Contest, the Lyon International Competition, Bacchus Awards, Wines and Women, Alhóndiga, Agrocanarias and the Insular Tasting of Gran Canaria. The company treasures 29 distinctions to its wines after the process of innovation that began in 2015.

Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice The majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to €100,000 or £85,000. So far, so good? This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:

£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax

What is the alternative? A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.

The returns over the last few years have been: 2013 7.6%

2014 7.5%

2015 10.3%

2016 6.5%

2017 7.8%

The growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. LA GOMERA

New look for access route into Valle Gran Rey

T

HE Cabildo de La Gomera has put out to tender a project for improvement and adaptation of the GM-1 in the access to the municipality of Valle Gran Rey, between the Acardece area and the El Mago roundabout, including access to La Playa in the CV -8. The work has a total investment of 4,414,744.40 euros. President of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, said it would solve problems of security, adequacy of the pavement and other improvements that will facilitate the transit of vehicles and pedestrians through one of the strategic routes of the island. In this regard, he recalled that the works include the rehabilitation and restoration of the pavement, as well as the replacement of the signage, in addition to the construction of walls and gutters in several sections, as well as the sanitation of those that already exist. “This is a project that also includes the adaptation of the areas surrounding the Mirador de Las Retamas in Arure, where a parking space and access to infrastructure will be created, as well as the adaptation of the

access to the Arure Tunnel, “ he added. In terms of safety, road councillor, Aníbal González said that the replacement of the barriers that run along the side of the GM-1 to the Casa de La Seda is planned, in addition to the execution of the works to reform the bus stop near the CEIP El Retamal, where a sidewalk of 1.5 metres will be created and railings will be installed to minimise the security problems in this area. “The elimination of architectural barriers along the road to allow the crossing of people with mobility difficulties or who use wheelchairs is another of the measures contemplated by this project,” said the councillor who announced the creation of car parks. for people with reduced mobility at various points of the route.

GREEN PROPOSALS

Arrecife reveals new-look with water walks and giant “green lung”

P

LANS have been unviled to convert Arrecife in Lanzarote into “an authentic capital of the biosphere reserve”.

The urban planning and green infrastructure project promoted by the island’s Cabildo and local council, first suggested in 2016, was officially presented by president, Pedro San Ginés. He was joined by tourist councillor and president of the Water Consortium of Lanzarote, Echedey Eugenio, Arrecife’s mobility councillor, Inodelvia Torres and town planner and technical director of the project, Juan Palop Casado. “Arrecife, capital of the Biosphere” is part of the proposal to create four ‘Water Walks’ which would connect the upper and lower parts of the city . The draft also includes safe school roads stemming

from these water walks which will connect educational centres. “The layout of these walks coincides with the old storm drains, then collected in

ditches and reservoirs that could be rehabilitated as part of this new infrastructure and green lung for Arrecife,” said Pedro San Ginés. The project also envisages the use of water tanks to collect water for irrigating the landscape and to help alleviate flooding during periods of heavy rain. The Cabildo president said the water walks would be like large boulevards. He described the project as of huge importance, with the Cabildo relying on funding from the Government of the Canary Islands which had already contributed three million euros. He also revealed they were evaluating the possible acquisition of a large plot, specifically the one known as the Mill of Cabo Pedro, to execute a big lung and green infrastructure for the capital. Sr. Gines admitted the whole project was ver y

ambitious and would need further funding, including from European funds and the Water Consortium. The architect Juan Palop Casado said the preliminary project could be finished by the end of the year and this “exciting project for Arrecife” could see light from 2019. However, it was hoped to implement some of the ideas in the short to medium term with new street furniture, wifi etc. Regarding the proposal to create the so-called ‘Water Walks’, the architect and technical director of the project explained that it is “an innovative and integrating project from the urban point of view that aims to link the neighbourhoods of the capital with the centereand implement a new system of communication and future mobility that facilitates pedestrian mobility and light transport (bicycles, among others) in the city “.

EXTINCTION THREAT

Green campaigners sound warning over Canary laurel forests C

LIMATE change and human actions are threatening the Canary laurel forests, environmentalists have claimed.

They say that unless urgent action is taken, the last remnants of subtropical African and Canarian forests will face a serious danger of collapse and extinction. The claims are made following a study by the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid and the Canar y Botanical Garden Viera y Clavijo. The humid Canary Islands’ laurels next to the Afromontane

forests are considered hot spots of biodiversity, sanctuaries that house irreplaceable species in the tree of life, the researchers point out. These forests represent the last remnants of subtropical forests that have managed to survive throughout the African continent, which have suffered a long history of extinction due to climate changes and human activities such as logging and

indiscriminate burning and grazing. In order to study the demographic dynamics of these forests, the researchers chose as a model species widely distributed in these habitats and apparently not threatened. For this they used species of the Canarina genus, plants known for being the “national flower” of the Canary Islands and also present in East Africa, from Ethiopia to Malawi. These species are considered living fossils, “the last survivors of their lineages, representatives of a unique and evolutionarily ancient biodiversity.” After an intensive sampling of the populations of the species, the researchers used molecular tools that showed an alarming decline in the genetic diversity of all the populations studied. In addition, they carried out demographic research models that revealed a population decline since the last ice age

Sharp-eyed local residents spotted the man and called the police. The 33-year-old suspect was found with 34,000 euros and various jewellery. He had gained access to the property through the front door which had apparently been left open. A patrol car happened to be in the area when the alert was raised and saw the man leaving in his car. The stolen effects were returned to their owner.

HE Cabildo of Fuerteventura will carry out conditioning work in the Cueva del Llano de Villaverde prior to its opening as a tourist attraction. The project involves the cleaning, geolocation, bricking and surveying of the cave, among other actions. According to heritage councillor Juan Jiménez: “This place is a marvel that must be taken care of and protected, so that, in a short time it can be visited and admired.” The General Director of Cultural Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands, Miguel Ángel Clavijo, recently met with the president of the Cabildo, Marcial Morales, Sr. Jiménez and the Mayor of La Oliva to talk about advancing the project.

German woman has been killed after her bicycle was involved in a collision with a lorr y in Lanzarote.

The accident happened in Costa Teguise just before 8.40pm. The 112 emergency service was told that a cyclist was in cardiorespiratory arrest as a result of the crash. The victim was aged 57. Medics tried all measures to save her life but without success.

until today. According to the study, in which French and Swiss researchers have collaborated, there is a time lag from the reduction of a habitat to its collapse and disappearance.

“This effect, known as extinction debt, is not obvious in the short term, but manifests itself over time,” explains Mario Mairal, currently a researcher at the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa) and leader of the study, who

added: “The spiral of extinction facing these organisms demands urgent conservation measures, necessar y to preser ve the last remnants of these forests that remain throughout the world.”

International jewellery thieves caught in Spain and Romania

Campaigners press Spain for first-time law

T

HE Civil Guard has dismantled an organisation which specialised in robberies with force in jewellery shops throughout the European Union.

Operation KALAX II has concluded for the time being with the arrest of five people - three of them in Lanzarote and one in Barcelona - and another in Constanza (Romania), the result of one of the European arrest warrants issued. They are accused of crimes of theft with force and integration into an international criminal organisation. Some of the effects stolen on the island of Lanzarote and in Romania have been recovered. In December last year, there was a robbery with force in one of the jewellery stores of a well-known business group in Lanzarote by means of the smash and grab method in which a large quantity of watches and high-end pieces were stolen, valued at 540,000 euros. As a result of this robbery, the Civil Guard began an investigation called Kalax I. In June, there was another burglary in a second jewellery store using the same method. On this occasion, the thieves got away with a haul worth 4.7 million euros in various pieces of jewellery, diamantería and high-end watches. Police connected the two incidents with another robbery committed on March 24th in the municipality of Tias (Lanzarote), this time taking jewellery and watches valued at about 40,000 euros. “This criminal organisation, made up of people of Romanian nationality, specialises in the commission of this type of event and was made up of highly trained professionals, who distribute specific tasks for the perpetration of large-scale robberies, preferably in jewellery shops. It has been found that they tend to act throughout the territory of the European Union, not ruling out their relationship with similar events in other countries,” said a police spokesman. During the investigation, the Civil Guard found out that some of the members of the criminal organisation intended to take several flights to leave the island, thus precipitating the arrest of three in Lanzarote and one in Barcelona. Large quantities of the stolen jewellery were found during six raids in Romania. The investigators found that some members of this criminal organisation had already been arrested years ago in other European countries such as Germany and Italy. In this last country they were nicknamed as “La banda del Buco” (the band of the hole), for a robbery that perpetrated in the city of Alessandria (Italy) of the same characteristics as that committed in Lanzarote.

Jihadist cell broken up in Barcelona INTERNET ACTIVITY

T

HE Civil Guard has dismantled another cell in Barcelona dedicated to the recruitment of jihadists.

The investigation goes back to the end of 2015 when agents of the Information Service, in collaboration with other police services, located the structure that has now been completely disarticulated The group was based in the Barcelona town of Mataró where they extended their activity to the

provinces of Barcelona and Tarragona, which consisted allegedly in the recruitment and radicalisation of individuals who were willing to move as combatants to conflict zones. The operation has led to the arrest of two individuals, M.B. 46 years old, born in Tetuán

(Morocco) and O.K. 36 years old, from Tangier (Morocco). Searches were made at their homes and various material seized. “The use of propaganda through the internet and platforms for mobile devices by different terrorist groups is one of their main strengths both for the dissemination of radical ideology and for the recruitment of new followers and to publicise their actions,” said a police spokesman. Since the elevation to level 4 of the Antiterrorist Alert on June 26th, 2015, the Civil Guard has promoted all investigations related to this type of propaganda, recruitment and financing structures, especially in the cyberspace and with special monitoring of the connections between residents in Spain and other people framed in terrorist groups abroad.

NIMAL campaigners are urging Spain not to lag behind other European countries which are strengthening up their stance against all forms of animal cruelty. President and spokesperson of the Animalist Party, Silvia Barquero and Laura Duarte met recently with the Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera. On the table were the main issues that concern animalists. Above all, they addressed the need to put in place a state animal protection law. PACMA gave Teresa Ribera its General Law of Welfare and Protection for Animals, the wellknown Zero Law (Circos Cero, Sacrificio Cero, Cero Tauromaquia). The text, written by the Animalist Party, includes the solution to most of the problems that animals suffer in Spain. “ We have put at your disposal a complete legal work and designed so that, for the first time, animals have a national law that protects them. Now it is up to the Ministry to decide how far it is willing to take it and how. We are at your disposal,” said Silvia Barquero, who describes her first meeting with the Minister as” positive

and cordial “. PACMA particularly stressed the need to ban circuses with animals in Spain, as other countries in Europe have already done. Animal representatives asked during the meeting about the position of the Ministry regarding bullfighting and activities such as bullfighting, bullfights or popular festivals in which it is allowed to mistreat the animals; as they showed their concern about the proliferation of macrogranjas, causing enormous suffering to animals and devastating effects on the environment. “The Animalist Party has placed itself at the disposal of the Ministry to work together on advances for the animals and hopes that this meeting will be the first of many so that Spain does not keep arriving late to all the animal advances that are being achieved in the countries most advanced in Europe,” said a spokesperson.

More than 2.4 million files seized in pornography raids

A

GENTS of the National Police have dismantled one of the largest national networks of distribution of child pornography through WhatsApp. The operation was coordinated by Interpol and Europol due to the international connections of the paedophile network in Europe and America. Fourteen groups were detected, featuring exclusively on extreme brutality of children aged from infancy up to eight. Nineteen people have been arrested in Spain and 19 raids were carried out across the country. About 2,400,000 files

of child pornography have been intervened. The detainees tried to hide their illicit activity using sophisticated encr yption programmes and specific content removal software. “The investigations detected 14 chat groups, 58 users and a huge amounts of shared files,” said a police spokesman. The researchers also confirmed that the illegal activity was not limited to Spain

but extended its networks to seven other countries in Europe and America. The arrests were carried out in Alicante, Oviedo, Barcelona, Burgos, Cordoba, Granada, Palma de Mallorca, Jaén, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, León, Madrid, Murcia , Santander, Tarragona, Teruel, Valencia and Valladolid. Items seized included eleven portable computers, 23 mobile phones, four tablets, eleven external hard drives, seven pendrives and five large capacity memory cards.

Spain agrees blue flashing lights for all emergency services

S

PAIN received 8.5 million international tourists during the month of June, which represents an increase of 1.3 per cent compared to the same month of 2017, and their expenditure was 9,395 million euros, 4.5 per cent more.

The data follows surveys of Tourist Movements in Border (FRONTUR) and Tourist Expenditure (EGATUR) prepared by the National Institute of Statistics. The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism has welcomed the figures which consolidate Spain in a leading position, especially due to the competitiveness of the destination. In the first six months of 2018, more than 37 million tourists (1.8 per cent more) visited the country, spending 38.944 million euros, which represents an increase of 4.2 per cent. The average daily expenditure of tourists grows by 6.2 per cent, standing at 152 euros. Among the main emitting markets, the United Kingdom stands out, with about 2.2

million tourists, Germany, with more than 1.2 million tourists and France, with 902,620 tourists and a growth of 5.3 per cent. The most dynamic markets were the Netherlands, Russia and the United States with tourist increases of over eleven per cent compared to the previous year. By national destinations, the Balearic Islands was the main autonomous community, with more than 2.1 million international visitors, which represents an increase of 0.9 per cent compared to June last year. It is followed by Catalonia, with close to 2.1 million and a rise of 3.2 per cent; and Andalusia, with

almost 1.2 million and an annual increase of 0.3 per cent. The autonomous communities of main destination with the highest expenditure in the month of June are Catalonia (with 2,402 million euros, up 13.6 per cent), the Balearic Islands (with 2,147 million and an increase of 0.7 per cent) and Andalusia (with 1,288 million, decreases by 2.8 per cent). As for the issuing countries, the United Kingdom has the highest cumulative expenditure with 2,033 million euros (+ 5.2 per cent). The UK is followed by Germany, with 1,233 million (-12.3 per cent) and France with 612 million (+ 14.6%).

NEW EVASIONS

Spain to get tough over social security fraud S PAIN’S social security and labour inspectorate have pledged to intensify the fight against fraud.

The General Treasur y of Social Security (TGSS) and the Labour and Social Security Inspectorate (ITSS) have formally resumed cooperation by signing an agreement between the two entities focused on making the fight against Social Security fraud more effective. The campaign will be looking at companies that make successive registrations and withdrawals to Social Security of the same worker to verify whether or not there is a declaration for vacation accrued and not paid; societies

that present anomalies in the declaration of overtime and those that abuse temporary and biased hiring of workers without organisational conditions or production characteristics that justify it. The TGSS will also be alert to companies that successively register and dismiss the same worker during vacation periods. The Supreme Court has already ruled in favour of maintaining the registration of teachers in Social Security in the holiday period. In the case of overtime, the

ITSS will act in the case of companies that communicate contribution bases and number of hours with an anomalous relationship. Another of the novel aspects is the attention to abnormally high rates of temporality and bias. The ITSS will verify that the obligations of registration and listing in sectors and companies that differ from the average data of similar companies in the same sector are correctly fulfilled. The Plan maintains vigilance regarding the derivation of debt liability, improper filing, insolvent debtor companies with activity, fictitious companies and fraudulent registrations.

In addition to police vehicles, they will be carried by firefighting vehicles, health care and civil-life protection. A period of two years is allowed for the holders of the affected vehicles to change from yellow to blue. With this change, Spain complies with the existing regulations in most of the States of the European Union. Until the publication of this reform, the blue light device

was restricted to the exclusive use of police vehicles and yellow for the other priority vehicles: fire extinguishing, civil protection-rescue and health care. This yellow auto light device is also carried by slow vehicles, which are the ones that constitute an obstacle in the road due to being stopped or parked or driving at a low speed while performing a service or work on the road.

“This situation generated some confusion among the rest of the road users by not clearly identifying the vehicles for firefighting, health care and civil protection-salvage as priority vehicles in emergency service that also have priority in passing,” said a spokesman for Spain’s driving directorate. In this way, the blue rotaries are reserved for the light signal of all the priority vehicles in emergency services and the yellow car for the vehicles that constitute an obstacle in the road, which contributes to improving safe mobility.

Hugh Salvin and Simon Bolivar “The liberator” of South America

O

N 5th January 1824 HMS ‘Cambridge’, under the command of Captain Thomas Maling, set sail from England for South America to take four British Consuls, their families and their staff, to the newly independent republics of Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Peru. The ship’s chaplain was Reverend Hugh Salvin, who later became vicar of the church in the town where I live. Reverend Salvin kept a journal of the threeyear long voyage that he published in 1829, entitled ‘Journal Written on Board of His Majesty’s Ship Cambridge, from January 1824 – May 1827’. HMS ‘Cambridge’ called in at Santa Cruz de Tenerife in January 1824 to take on water and fresh supplies before sailing on to South America. After landing at Rio de Janeiro in Argentina, Montevideo in Uruguay and Valparaiso in Chile, the ‘Cambridge’ arrived off the coast of Peru in early June. Peru at that time was the last of the nine Spanish colonies in South America where the revolution was still ongoing. The revolutionaries, known as the ‘Patriots’ had succeeded everywhere else, but Peru, with its silver, gold and nickel mines, was the jewel in the crown as far as Spain was concerned, so government, or ‘Royalist’, resistance could be expected to be stronger. Reverend Salvin described in his journal the events of the war of independence. On landing at Callao, the port for Lima, the capital, he wrote, “We are told that the Royalist and Patriot armies are at a great distance from each other; Bolivar, the Colombian general, being at Truxillo: and Canterac, the commander of the Royalist forces, marching in pursuit”. But soon there was alarm among the Royalists in Lima when it was heard that Bolivar was about 150 miles (225km) from the city with an army of 5,000 Colombians and 6,000 Peruvians. Spanish authority was weak, the government controlled only a few miles around Lima, all agriculture and trade was at a standstill except in the immediate neighbourhood. Wealthy people began to bring their possessions to the fort of Callao for security. Three ships of the Peruvian navy, commanded by an Englishman, Admiral Guise, who had declared a blockade on the whole coast, came into the harbour of Callao to enforce it. There followed several weeks of inconsequential skirmishes at sea with Spanish ships. After watching one incident, Hugh Salvin wrote that “the firing

formed a very amusing sight from our ship.” The sympathies of the British were with the Patriots but they were obliged to maintain a neutral stance, so on 10th August Captain Maling of the ‘Cambridge’ dined with General Rodil, who had been welcomed on board with an eleven-gun salute. General Rodil was the Spanish governor of Lima and its port of Callao, in Hugh Salvin’s position of ship’s chaplain, he was able to speak to him on occasions. Word then arrived that Bolivar ‘the Liberator’ would shortly be at Lima. Rodil tightened his control over his troops, and to stiffen morale he had two men shot simply for saying in public that the Patriots would soon be there. This was followed up with news that Bolivar’s advanced guard had surprised Royalist General Canterac on the 17th August and was now in full pursuit. Rodil immediately ordered all Spanish troops in Lima to march north to meet Bolivar and sent a request to Captain Maling to allow 100 marines to go to Lima to protect the property of English merchants. The increasing insecurity led to a large quantity of silver and gold being brought on board the ‘Cambridge’ to be held in trust with the British, while most of the ladies of Lima retired to a convent for protection against Bolivar’s army. There followed more naval action off Callao, albeit intermittently, then on 25th October the ‘Cambridge’ left the port and sailed north to anchor off the River Chancay, thirty-five miles away. Here Bolivar sent an aide-de-camp who came on board to dine. The ‘Cambridge’ returned to Callao to learn that on the 3rd November a fierce battle had taken place between the Patriots and the Royalists not far from Callao. The Patriots this time had been over confident; they had not reconnoitred the terrain and so had been defeated by a Spanish cavalr y charge. Reverend Salvin walked over the battlefield where bodies of the Patriot dead had been left in the open to be eaten by dogs and buzzards. He

noticed some ver y small corpses and was told that it was usual for boys of ten or twelve to be taken on as soldiers. The ‘Cambridge’ was back at Chancay on 5th November, when visits were exchanged between Captain Mailing and ‘The Liberator ’ himself. Bolivar came on board ship to “all possible demonstrations of respect”, a seventeen-gun salute was fired and the yards were manned. Bolivar was shown around the ship and given lunch with a small party that included Hugh Salvin, who described Bolivar as about 5’8” (1.73m), swarthy complexion, a little bald at the front, hair black with a little grey, large mustachios that were also grey, and dark hazel eyes. He also noted “his body and limbs (are) small and meagre” and “his whole figure and face are those of a man worn out with care and fatigue”. Twelve days later, Bolivar again came on board with his staff officers. Another seventeen-gun salute was fired, the yards were manned and all flags were flown. They dined again with speeches and toasts and Bolivar was full of praise for Britain. On 18th November the ‘Cambridge’ returned the thirty-five miles to Callao, from where General Rodil had heard the seventeen-gun gun salute to Bolivar. He was offended by this welcome given to the rebel and in his annoyance he actually shot at the ‘Cambridge’, first with a blank, then by a live ball which passed very close by. The war of independence at this time swung both ways, on the 28th November Royalist forces gained a march on the Patriots, but then on 5th December news came that Patriot troops were suddenly in possession of Lima, leaving Rodil and his government troops with the forts and the port of Callao. On the 6th December a tragic incident occurred. The British consul to Peru, Mr. Rowcroft, was accidentally shot on returning to Lima after dining on board the ‘Cambridge’. His uniform of the City of London Cavalry was very similar to that of an officer of the Spanish army, for which he had been mistaken by a Patriot soldier. He had been warned of this danger by General Rodil, whom he had also visited. Mr.

Rowcroft died on the 7th and was buried on the 11th on the Isle of San Lorenzo. On the 19th a message was received from Lima announcing the complete defeat of the Spanish troops on the 9th December at Ayacucho in the mountains some 200 miles (330km) south east of Lima. The news was openly welcomed on board the ‘Cambridge’ but the men were forbidden to cheer for fear of damaging the British position of neutrality. Two captured Spanish officers were sent by the victorious Patriots to inform Rodil officially and command him to surrender the forts at Callao. As a respected ‘neutral’, Captain Maling was asked to assist in arranging the terms. However, Rodil refused to surrender; he intended to hold out in the unrealistic hope of help arriving from Spain. On the 1st January 1825 a ball was held by an English merchant in honour of Bolivar and to celebrate the battle of Ayacucho. Captain Maling was unable to attend, so Hugh Salvin took his place, he was introduced once more to

Bolivar, who recognised him and bowed. In Lima the shops were open and there was a spirit of optimism that had not been there under the Spanish government. But not far away the forts and the town of Callao were still under the control of General Rodil, who was surrounded and besieged by 3,000 Colombian and Peruvian soldiers. That was the situation when the ‘Cambridge’ had to leave to go to Chile after a ten months’ stay in Peru. While sailing south the ‘Cambridge’ once more met up with Bolivar. On 10th May he was visiting the town of Quilca on his way from Lima to Arequipa. Again he received a seventeen-gun salute from the ‘Cambridge’ before coming on board with several of his officers to dine. The ‘Cambridge’ returned to Peru eight months later, in January 1826, to find that the forts of Callao were flying the Peruvian flag. General Rodil had finally surrendered on 24th January, only a few days before the arrival of the ‘Cambridge’. At the beginning of the siege it was estimated

that the forts could not hold out for more than two months, but in the event Rodil had held out for fifteen months, during which time there had been 2,000 needless deaths in a cause that had been hopeless from the start. Oddly enough, the defeated General Rodil was allowed great freedom of movement. Hugh Salvin met him on the 8th February and shook hands, then on the 12th he breakfasted with Rodil and his officers on the Cambridge. About Rodil he wrote, “his manners appeared to me gentlemanly, and his countenance expressive both of good sense and good humour”. A farewell dinner for Rodil was held on board the following day. In March 1826, the first congress of independent Peru met when it gave Simon Bolivar absolute power with no thoughts of a constitution. HMS ‘Cambridge’ left Peru for last time on 19th December 1826 and after a leisurely return voyage arrived back in Portsmouth on 28th May 1826, having been away for over three years. From what can be gathered, Reverend Hugh Salvin published his journal then led a quiet, uneventful life.

Promises for Puerto but when can we expect firm dates?

I

have no plan for this month, that is to say I have no topic, not a major one anyway, so I’m afraid it will have to be a case of just start writing and see where it takes me. I’ll start on a positive note for a change, a first for me I’m sure, just don’t get used to it, sometimes even I am obliged to give credit where it’s due. I don’t know why it is, I find it difficult writing praise, whereas having a good old moan flows easily from my two finger tips, typing isn’t my strongpoint, but anyway here goes: There is a project underway in Puerto de la Cruz to update all the street lighting. It is a long term project, over a few years, yet it must be quite advanced as I read that they have already changed 2000 lights. No mean feat when you think that the mainstays of the workforce are just two men and a blue and white cherry picker. Yes, you heard me right just two men, not three or four, plus a couple of lookers-on and a foreman to boot, because these men are not council employees, they are contractors, which is why I am happy to sing their praises. However, perhaps I am being a little economical with the truth, when working in a street with low level lights they have a team to back them up, but for high level lights, it’s back to just the two of them, and shock horror, stands back in amazement, they even work after lunch. The plan is to change all the lights to LED, or where that is not practical to take them off the grid by going solar powered. The cost savings to date, on the 2000 already changed is reported as 60%, on energy saving alone, I guess that is , not taking into account the cost of conversion. If I was to be just a little critical, believe me I am trying my best not to be, it is concerning their rollout plan, which seems to me, plain old Mr. Joe Public, an innocent and naive bystander, to be at best a bit erratic. They changed one street in the Guacimara district a couple of months ago and haven’t been back since. Maybe, however, their work plan is

driven by the availability of parts and streets are changed as a when these become available; if so then I am guilty of doing them an injustice. My street, a sleepy dead end backwater which surely should have been low priority, has recently been changed. For some reason we have those high level lights, the ones that look more at home on major roads and motorways. However, unlike similar ones on the main road, we had not gone LED, the bulbs haven’t been changed, but we have been converted to solar power. Not a problem for me at all, in fact quite the opposite, as the continuous loud buzzing from the light nearest to me, a problem which despite much scratching of heads of the council employees on numerous occasions was never resolved , is now silent, what bliss. That’s it, there is only so much of interest to say about LED and solar power and changing light bulbs, besides which I have been almost nice for far too long, I have a reputation to uphold you know, time to move on. It had all been very quiet on the news front with regard to pending projects. It couldn’t last; not with next year ’s elections creeping up on them and the need to make an announcement ahead of their summer holiday. So 2 weeks ago now, by the time you read this, a series of press releases and social media statements with regards to three of the most major projects in Puerto de la Cruz. Some good news, some quite bad and some that make

promises without committing themselves to a timeline. Let’s take the plunge and dive straight into the deep end. No, not the swimming pool, though that would have made a good intro, more on that project in a mo. I am talking about the Muelle , a project where all involved have been wading through red tape for years , who having thought they were nearly there, were just waiting for the final nod from Costas,( they who should be blamed for all delays regardless of whose fault it is) who have just thrown the most ginormous spanner in the works. Yes, this is the bad news. The project with Costas agreement, or so they thought, had been split in two, with the Seaward project, construction of the port as phase one and the Landside project, all the commercial buildings as phase two. The plan was to concentrate on phase one and leave phase two on the back burner. The rationale being, I’m sure, though they would never admit it, it is going to take so long to complete the port itself, phase two would never happen, at least not within their political lifetime. Now Costas has moved the goalposts, perhaps everything is not so cosy in Madrid since the change of government, and they want all the planning and more importantly the environmental impact reports for phase two before phase one can proceed any further. So is it back to the drawing board or time to walk away. The case for the ‘it will never happen in my lifetime’ school of thought now looks stronger. Will any party be brave enough to include this project in next year ’s manifesto; it could prove to be the kiss of death. Approval for the new Municipal Pool, or the ‘Centro Insular de Natacíon’ to use

its correct name, is imminent according to recent reports. Are they sure, we are talking about receiving Costas approval, the same Costas who have just effectively kicked the Muelle project into touch. Once approval has been received the project enters the licensing phase, which will involve a lot of shuffling of paperwork and should be completed within 6 months. Therefore reports of work starting before the end of the year seems improbable to me and even early in 2019 seems unlikely, but perhaps with fingers crossed it might just begin in time for polling, but I can think of 11.6 million reasons why it won’t. Yes, €11.6 million that’s the cost, and for that you don’t even get a roof, at least not over the pools, but there will be one over the bar. Glad to see they have got their priorities right. And what about that name, it’s funny I’ve always thought of ‘insular’ to mean small town, narrow minded and inward looking. Ok, so it can also mean of the island, perhaps that is what they intended. The Parque San Francisco project is the third one in the news recently, and is for me the one out of the three where we are most likely to see some progress. For one it doesn’t need approval from Costas and they already have approval from all the relative cultural departments and secondly phase one was completed almost on time in April/May depending on who you listen to. Though why phase two couldn’t just follow straight on is a myster y to me, surely the eight months or so while phase one was underway gave then enough time to juggle all the necessar y paperwork. That is precisely where the project sits now, all the I’s are being dotted and the T’s crossed to ensure all the permissions are in place to be able to commence demolition work

before the end of the year as promised, or suggested, or hoped for. I think like most things here the timeline is a bit flexible. That should really be it from me this month. Although, perhaps whilst on the subject of projects I could just briefly mention the new bus station, a topic most dear to me and a regular feature of this

column throughout the years of delay and false promises made. It is strange how I have seemed to lose interest as soon as the work started, perhaps good news doesn’t sit easily with me. Still I am happy to report, after months of shifting rubble and dirt around the site, the first concrete has been poured, so now they can really say that construction has started.

centre of the dash sits a12-inch touchscreen that allows easy connection to all the latest hightech features. These include Bluetooth, DS Connect Nav, Mirror Screen and emergency and assistance system. Powered by a 2-litre turbocharged 180PS diesel engine, this model was no slouch. A new eight-speed automatic transmission was perfectly suited to the engine and the power came through smoothly or rapidly when required. It wasn’t too noisy when fired up with the push button start and offered a fair sprint time of 9.9 seconds from zero to 62mph. And with a top speed of

dynamic drive. This front-wheel drive SUV handled potholed roads pretty well, assisted by its active scan suspension. This system scans a number of sensors on acceleration, speed, steering wheel angle and includes a windscreenmounted camera that scans road surface 20 metres ahead. It then adjusts the damping to suit the conditions to provide a smoother ride. The Crossback is a big vehicle but it handled well on winding roads with good road holding. Excellent sound-proofing added to the driving pleasure as this model purred along the motorway ever so quietly. And a high list of safety equipment included lane

combined, 50.4mpg urban, and 64.2mpg extra urban. The DS 7 Crossback brings lots of cutting-edge technology and one of these, available as an option, is DS Connected Pilot. The system works in conjunction with the car’s adaptive cruise control and acts on the steering to position the Crossback within its chosen lane. There are also dynamic LED headlights that produce a sweeping beam that adapts according to road conditions and vehicle speed. The DS 7 Crossback features plenty of French flair in its styling, luxur y and technology, and is certain to raise the awareness of the DS brand.

134mph, the revs were always low when cruising along at maximum legal speeds. There are two driving modes – normal and a sport that provides a firmer, more

departure and speed limit warning and adaptive cruise control. Fuel economy figures, assisted by stop start, are also excellent – 57.6mpg

A 4x4 plug-in hybrid version – DS 7 Crossback E-Tense – will be added to the range next year. On-the-road price of the test model is £36,380.

T’S not often that any of my neighbours ask what make my test vehicle is.

Despite DS Automobiles being founded in Paris in 2014, the model in my driveway easily stood out as something new on the scene. I’ve had a number of DS models parked outside my house but they could quite easily be viewed as up-market Citroens – despite their DS badges. The PSA group introduced its premium DS brand to offer buyers a higher-luxury car than its Peugeot and Citroen range. But it is just this year that a new generation of DS vehicles is taking to the roads. And I was able to inform my neighbour that the gleaming SUV sitting on my driveway was the brand’s new flagship model – a DS 7 Crossback. This is a big SUV that won’t go unnoticed and looks capable of gaining a slice of the sales in the premium sector. It certainly stands out from the crowd with its huge front grille featuring DS wings in the middle, long creased bonnet, big 19-inch Beijing diamond

cut alloys, Inox roof rails, sharp lines and one-piece light clusters at the rear. There are four trims – Elegance, Performance Line, Prestige and Ultra Prestige – with a choice of diesel and petrol engines. My test model was a Performance Line BlueHDi 180 and it didn’t fail to impress during my first drive of a DS 7 Crossback. Interior quality is impressive and features Black Basalt Alcantara and leatherette seats, perforated leather steering wheel with contrast stitching, leather gear knob and aluminium sport pedals and footrest. There’s lots of room up front and in the rear. Boot capacity is enormous at 555 litres, rising to 1,752 litres with seats folded down, and you also get plenty of stowage compartments in the cabin. The high driving position allowed good all-round vision and the height-adjustable front

seats with electric lumbar adjustment provided excellent comfort – ideal for long journeys. There’s a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and at the

Do I have to wear my seat belt? I

N recent weeks there have been quite a few fatalities on the roads here in Tenerife in the North and also in the South. Whilst we are not suggesting that the use of seat belts or the lack of use was to blame it seems pertinent to refresh driver and passengers’ memories on this subject. We are all aware that wearing a seatbelt is obligatory but sadly many people still do not do this. A seatbelt is designed to provide the driver, passengers and animals as well as large objects such as cases and boxes, to travel safely and comfortably in a vehicle (not that boxes have to be comfortable!) The obligatory use of seat belts was first introduced in Spain in 1975 but many countries have different laws on the use and have been introduced at different times. There is a clear difference between when it became obligatory to wear a seat belt. It was in general obligatory in most countries for front seat belts in the 1970’s, but sometime after for the rear seatbelts to become obligatory was introduced many years later. Children must always be safely and securely seated in a vehicle not only wearing a seatbelt correctly but also dependent on size, age or height in the appropriate car seat or booster seat. Full details of this can be found on the DGT site if one has any doubts.

Animals may be carried in vehicles, within the law, in the rear of the vehicle when they too are properly secured. This means that they must be restrained with an appropriate dog harness, most of which are linked into the seat belt fixture with a strap. This means that the animal is safe and secure, cannot interfere with the driver’s line of vision or cause a distraction by jumping around etc. If you have a large dog and a suitable vehicle such as a Peugeot Partner, Citroen Berlingo or an estate car, or similar then a dog guard can be purchased and fitted which enables the dog to travel safely in the “boot” area of the said vehicle. There is of course a correct way of wearing a seat belt, and this is very important, as if not worn correctly it will not provide the appropriate assistance in the case of an accident or sudden stop. You should always wear the seatbelt over your shoulder, pass it immediately down the upper torso of your body and engage it firmly and securely. Do not put it under your arm as this may cause you an injury in the event of an accident and possibly not restrain you correctly. If, like many women especially, you find

this position uncomfortable you may purchase from Car accessory shops or online, seatbelt covers that are padded and fit, normally by Velcro, over the belt giving a buffer and making it more comfortable to wear. Seat belts can also be used to secure large loads or boxes you may be carrying in the rear of the vehicle, that will not fit into your boot. There are of course fines and sanctions for not wearing a seatbelt, for not wearing it correctly, and for transporting animals without the proper restraints. You should periodically check the seatbelts for use, fraying, fixing etc to ensure your continued safety when travelling. If you have any doubt that the belt is not working properly or has severe wear then get in touch with your garage and ask them to check and if necessary supply and fit a new one. A second hand one is not recommended as your safety and that of your passengers should be a priority.

EUTHANASIA EXPLAINED

How to face the decision to say farewell to your beloved cat

C

ATS do not live as long as humans. Thinking about euthanasia – literally, a “gentle and easy death” – is something that no cat owner likes to dwell on but sadly it is a decision that many cat owners eventually have to face. If you are considering euthanasia of a healthy cat then do not forget that rehoming may be a better option. Ask your vet’s advice – many can help with solving behavioural problems and they have information on rehoming.

Is it pain or old age?

Always discuss this with your vet. Do not be afraid to visit the vet sooner rather than later. Many of the signs of “old age”, such as arthritis, can be relieved. Your cat’s problems may be treatable and early treatment reduces suffering. Cats do not necessarily show pain by crying or yowling. Assessment of long-term pain can be difficult even for vets, as animals (and people) tend to adapt their behaviour to cope. Sometimes the only way is to try using painkillers (only use those prescribed by a vet) to see if your cat brightens up. Your cat could be in pain if there has been a change in behaviour, a loss of appetite and a reluctance to play or move around, or if your cat is not washing or grooming. It may also be a sign of pain if your cat is restless and cannot seem to get comfortable, is sitting or lying in an abnormal position, seems tense or withdrawn, or has just lost enthusiasm for life. Purring is not a sign of comfort – even cats in extremes of pain will still purr. Always discuss your cat’s symptoms with your vet, as all of these signs can also be caused by problems other than pain.

Arriving at the decision to euthanase your cat

Talk it over with your vet and your family and friends. Questions to think about include: Can your cat still eat, drink, sleep and move around reasonably comfortably? Does he or she respond to your presence and greet you? Does feeding time attract interest? Persistent and incurable inability to eat, vomiting, signs of pain, distress or discomfort, or difficulty in breathing are all indications that euthanasia should be considered. You and your family know your cat better than anyone else, so try to make a reasoned judgement on quality of life. Your vet will help you with this, and will often make a recommendation. If you are hoping for an improvement in your cat’s condition, setting a time limit may be a sensible option. Sadly, few cats die peacefully in their sleep at home. Most reach a point when their quality of life is unsatisfactory and a decision for euthanasia has to be made. Living with a chronically ill cat can be emotionally (and financially) draining. Often there is a substantial time commitment involved in care. Not every owner is able to cope and, if there is no chance of a recovery and you are unable to give your cat the degree of care needed for a comfortable life, it may be better to opt for euthanasia. With some invalid cats there is the possibility of a sudden and unpredictable deterioration. If you are unable to make arrangements for your cat to receive emergency care (all vets in the UK have to make provision for this) euthanasia may be a better option.

What actually happens during euthanasia?

Consider taking some time off work to get over the event. Explain the situation to the receptionist when you make the appointment as you can often choose a quiet time for your visit to the surgery. It may be a good idea for a friend or family member to come with you for support. Some vets will agree to make house visits if you prefer. If your cat is already hospitalised, then you can ask to visit and say goodbye if you wish. However, if your cat is under an anaesthetic, it may be kinder to agree to euthanasia without waking him, and perhaps to see him afterwards. The following is a detailed description of the process. Some of the events described may be distressing, but remember that your cat rapidly loses consciousness and cannot feel pain from that point onwards. You will normally need to sign a consent form. Euthanasia is usually carried out by injecting an overdose of anaesthetic into the vein of the front leg, although the injection can be given to other areas of the body as well. Your cat is held by a nurse and a small patch of fur is shaved off. All your cat feels is a tiny prick of the needle – then the injection is painless. Occasionally, a cat may give a small cry as the injection is given – as with all anaesthetics, there is a brief feeling of dizziness as the drug takes effect. Unconsciousness follows within seconds, often before the injection is finished. Death occurs within a couple of minutes when the heart stops beating. It may take a little longer if the animal is very ill or has poor circulation. In these cases, it can sometimes be difficult for the vet to find a vein. If a cat is agitated or restless, then the vet may give a sedative first, but finding a vein can then be more difficult and the injection may work more slowly. In the few minutes after death you may see reflex muscle movement, or involuntary gasps. These are not signs of life; in fact, they are reflexes denoting that death has occurred. The eyes usually stay open and the bladder sometimes empties. The vast majority of euthanasias proceed smoothly and quickly with little distress to the animal. Even if there are difficulties, it is still a quick procedure that can save your cat many days or weeks of suffering and a painful end.

Should you stay with your cat during euthanasia?

This is entirely your choice. It may be a comfort for you to see that euthanasia is usually a quick and gentle process. Try not to feel guilty if you feel unable to watch – if you are upset then this may upset your cat. Vets and nurses choose their profession because they want to help animals. You can rely on them to treat your cat sympathetically even in your absence. If you wish, ask to see your cat afterwards. At the end you will probably be offered the opportunity to be alone with your cat for a few minutes.

What happens after euthanasia?

Most people opt for cremation arranged by the vet. Usually, this is communal cremation with other cats but you can arrange for individual ashes to be returned, although this may be expensive. There are pet cemeteries for which vets usually have details, or you can take the body home for burial. If you are undecided, then vets can usually store the body while you consider. Don’t be embarrassed to ask if you wish to keep a lock of hair, or perform a ceremony such as saying a prayer – vets are quite used to such requests and will be sympathetic. It is entirely natural to feel upset when your cat dies. After all, your cat is a beloved family member. Do not be embarrassed

about showing your emotions – veterinary staff expect you to be upset. It takes time to get over the loss of a loved one, and, although reactions differ, often a mixture of feelings – sadness, loneliness and anger – can follow. Try not to feel guilty or blame yourself – the decision for euthanasia is taken with your cat’s interests at heart to avoid suffering. Some people find themselves questioning whether they did the right thing. It is normal to feel some doubt, though this will ease in time. Be prepared for the house to feel empty on your return. Try to treasure your memories and talk to family and friends. If you have questions about your cat’s condition, then talk to your vet. Sometimes family, friends and work colleagues who themselves have not experienced a special relationship with an animal, may be unsympathetic or make unhelpful remarks. For children it can be especially upsetting, as it may be their first experience of death. Children need support even if they are not outwardly upset. Talk to them honestly about what is happening and, as far as possible, involve them in the decision making. Rituals such as funerals, making a memorial or assembling a scrapbook with memories of the cat may help. Be prepared for questions about death and its finality. For adolescents the loss of a cat can be particularly difficult, as your cat may be the family member to whom they feel closest. For young people who have other difficulties in their lives, the loss of a cat can be devastating, and it may be sensible to seek professional advice. Other cats may notice the loss and respond to it. They may be unsettled and lose their appetite for one or two days. It may help if they see the body of the deceased cat. Giving them extra attention may provide some comfort.

Another cat?

Sooner or later you may start to think about getting another cat. No two cats are the same and, although another may have characteristics in common with your previous cat, your new cat will have a different personality. Your relationship is not a “replacement” but it can still be rewarding. Everyone is different, and when you feel that you want another cat, you will probably find that your new cat is a worthy successor. The knowledge you have gained from caring for your cat could be put to good use caring for one of the many cats currently in shelters for want of an experienced owner. If you have other cats, remember that bonding can be very specific to an individual. A different cat may not be easily accepted as a substitute companion, even though you wish to have another cat around. You cannot force cats to like each other – some live with a newcomer easily, but others never get on or only manage to live together in an uneasy truce. However, if there is no competition for food or safe sleeping places, most cats accept each other and some even form close bonds. Taking things slowly with careful introductions is vital to prevent excessive reactions.

A great part of the fun of wining and dining in Tenerife is finding somewhere different and it’s well worth a trip out to Santa Ursula to the warm and inviting Donde Mario. Though from the outside you might easily pass by it, the inside is elegant and captivating. Restaurateur Mario Torres surprises us every day with his extensive use of produce in season, and his unbeatable experience with wines and cookery. Just try his Cherne warm salad, a super-healthy Canarian fish soup, or his Lomo de Vaca Morucha. You will be captivated.

Set in a series of old Canary houses, this restaurant is made up of a labyrinth of inter-connecting rooms leading off from the bar area in the centre. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an English country pub with its low ceilings with wooden beams and warm décor. The food is fundamentally Canarian. They grow most of their own produce at their allotment and only use olive oil to cook with. Their ethos is a simple one, only use the best, fresh produce and cook it with thought and care. The menu is described as Picoteo, slightly more than tapas without reaching the full-blown three-course meal status. It is delicious and affordable. “La Bodeguita de Enfrente” won the “II Gastronomic Awards Cruzcampo Gran Reserva El Día-Mesa Abierta”, which took place last year.

Why not try a touch of “picoteo”, the Spanish-style of eating where, as the name suggests, you pick a selection of dishes and share with your companions. You will find “El Calderito de la Abuela” in Santa Úrsula and it offers a unique and homely atmosphere combining Canary cuisine with modern creativity. In 2016, “El Calderito de la Abuela” won the “Best Canarian Kitchen Restaurant Award” in the first edition of the “El Dia-Mesa Abierta” Awards on July 28th. The exterior of this property belies what you will find inside as it is full of charm and carácter and there is an incredible view of La Orotava valley. “A gem” is how it is described.

The event will gather, on stage, the Canarian musicians Rosana, El Vega and Morirán Todos !, the Catalans of Muchachito and the Russians of Oligarkh, who will travel to Tenerife from Saint Petersburg. “A luxury line-up that will give content to the production of this Clean and Sustainable Concert, in line with a trend that prevails in the great summer festivals in the world,” a spokesman explained. Organised by Arona council and with the sponsorship of the Government of the Canary Islands, images related to the marine life of the Arona coast and its resources will be shown throughout the environmental concert, among other actions in favour of sustainability. This initiative was born with the intention of revitalising the historical image of Arona as the

nerve centre of the end of summer with major musical events as they have marked, over time, milestones such as Son Latinos, Aguaviva and multitudinous concerts of great international stars such as Marc Anthony , Jennifer Lopez, Juan Luis Guerra and Ricky Martin. ARN Blue & Green complies with recommendations such as the preservation of the natural and cultural heritage or the promotion of the efficient use of resources and the promotion of responsible

consumption. The Blue & Green RNA will include different actions in order to meet the objectives of promoting sustainability and conservation of the environment. In this way, reusable cups will be provided to the attendees, thanks to the collaboration of the Island Council of Tenerife through its Tenerife + Sustainable brand (www.tenerifemassostenible.es), at the refundable price of a euro when returned. TRADITIONAL SHOWCASE

The story of women’s More than 210 artisans to take part in Pinolere basketball told in new regional fair of handicrafts exhibition

A

N unusual exhibition in La Laguna is paying homage to the historical evolution of women’s basketball from its origins to our times.

“La Casa de Los Capitanes” is hosting “1893 - From Northampton to Tenerife” until September 29th to coincide with the last days of competition of the 2018 Women’s Basketball World Cup. The president of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), Jorge Garbajosa, and the Mayor of La Laguna, José

Alberto Díaz, starred in the opening ceremony of the exhibition. It is one of more than 50 complementary activities that the FEB together with the collaborating institutions has organised on the occasion of the World Cup in Tenerife from September 22nd to 30th. The exhibition narrates the struggle of women from

different countries and backgrounds to put basketball on the world map. “This show is important for us because we understand basketball not only as a sport but as something educational, playful and familiar and this exhibition is a compendium of the three things,” said Sr. Garbajosa. The exhibition is composed of different information panels, as well as a dozen thematic stations, where visitors can see objects related to the history of both women’s basketball and the evolution of the Spanish women’s team. Also, different videos with interviews and reports with protagonists of this evolution will be screened. Opening hours are from Monday to Friday, from 10am to noon and from 5pm to 7pm; and on Saturdays, from 10am to 2pm. On March 22, 1893 at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, the first women’s basketball game in history was played, a story that continues to this day.

T

HE Pinolere Regional Fair of Handicrafts in La Orotava will have 210 artisans from all over the archipelago.

The traditional show, which is in its 30th edition, will be held between August 31st and September 2nd in the Pinolere ethnographic park. This year, it will be dedicated to traditional costumes although over tgbe three days, you can enjoy the art of multiple artisans, various disciplines and traditional trades. La Orotava council recently presented the official poster, the work of the local photographer and person closely linked to the fair, Yapci Gomez Lima. The artist used the women embroiderers of La Orotava as his inspiration, portraying aged hands to reflect the generations that have dedicated themselves to embroider the typical costumes. Gomez Lima stressed the importance of conserving and enhancing the use of traditional clothing and the need to keep traditional crafts alive. During the presentation ceremony attended by the Mayor Francisco Linares; councillor for local economic development, Efraín Medina, and the manager of the Pinolere Cultural Association, Jesús García, details were given of the broad programme of events that will take place

during the three days of the fair, during which it is expected to receive more than 30,000 people . On this occasion there are a total of 210 artisans, 60 per cent from Tenerife and the remaining 40 per cent from the rest of the islands of the archipelago. There is a waiting list of some 30 more craftsmen but due to the conditions of the space the number cannot be increased. This year the Fair is dedicated to traditional costumes, so the motto of the show is ‘stitches with thread’. In addition, tribute will be paid to the town of Sabinosa in El Hierro, so there will be activities and traditional elements hand in hand with the residents of this town. Visitors can enjoy important musical performances that will set the scene. The Los Gofiones group, Premio Canarias, will put the finishing touch on the closing of the fair as a tribute to the artisans. The Calicanto group from Lan-

zarote will also act, consisting of a score of women. And there will be the Folkloric Association Sabinosa, the oldest in the Canary Islands. Throughout the weekend, many other attractive activities will be offered to all the public, such as craft workshops. And no less relevant will be the exhibitions of traditional costumes, which are worked from the Pinolere Cultural Association in coordination with the Sectoral Council of the traditional clothing of Tenerife. Sr. Linares stressed the fair is an important showcase for artisans to market their products and a great opportunity for all those who are dedicated, with much sacrifice, to ancient crafts. He highlighted the involvement of the three public administrations - the Government of the Canary Islands, Tenerife Cabildo and La Orotava council and the fundamental support of private companies.

MOST COMMON RUNNING INJURIES

Knee pain and other running injuries R UNNING injuries can affect anyone, from experienced runners who push themselves hard, to beginners whose muscles are not used to running. Below are five of the most common running injuries.

1. Knee pain

Knee pain, also called runner’s knee, can have many causes, such as swelling under the kneecap. During your run, you may develop pain at the front of the knee, around the knee or behind the kneecap. The pain may be dull or it could be sharp and severe. To help knee pain at home, apply ice to the knee and stretching. Hold ice (try a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a damp tea towel) on the painful area for around 20 minutes a few times a day. Never put ice directly on your skin. To stretch the area, try lying on your side with your bad leg on top. Bend your top leg so that your foot goes back towards your bottom, then hold it there with your hand and keep both knees touching. Hold the stretch for at least 45 seconds, breathing deeply and feeling the stretch in the thigh. Repeat this around six times a day. If the pain is severe or the knee is swollen, see your GP straight away. If your knee pain is not severe, stop running and get it checked by a GP or physiotherapist if the pain doesn’t go away after a week. They can also recommend stretches or exercises to help you recover.

2. Achilles pain

The Achilles tendon is the tough, rubbery cord at the back of the ankle that links the muscle to the bone. Regular running can cause wear and tear to the tendon over time. You may have pain and swelling at the back of the ankle or heel. The pain may be minor but continuous, or it could be sudden and sharp. It may be worse first thing in the morning. To treat Achilles pain at home, Andy recommends applying ice to the area if you can feel a lump there (never put ice directly on your skin). You can also gently massage the area with your fingers. You could also try using heel wedges in your shoes. Get advice about this from a sports or running shop. See your GP or a physiotherapist if you have Achilles pain that doesn’t disappear after three to four weeks. If you have a sudden, sharp pain, your Achilles tendon may have torn. See your GP straight away if this is the case.

3. Shin pain

Shin pain occurs on the front of the leg, below the knee. It’s often referred to as shin splints. Runners are often aware of a dull pain in the shin but carry on

running. However, this can cause increasing damage to the area, which can lead to a sudden sharp pain that stops you running altogether. Pain can be relieved by applying ice to the area regularly for the first few days (never put ice directly on your skin). See your GP or a physiotherapist if the area is swollen, the pain is severe or it does not improve in two to three weeks.

4. Heel pain

Pain or swelling in the heel or bottom of the foot can occur if you suddenly start doing a lot more running, if you run uphill or if your shoes aren’t supportive enough or are worn out. The medical name for heel pain is plantar fasciitis. Heel pain is often sharp and occurs when you put weight on the heel. It can feel like someone is sticking something sharp in your heel, or as if you’re walking on sharp stones. Apply ice to the area. The best way to do this is to freeze a small bottle of water, then place it on the floor and roll it back and forth under your foot for about 20 minutes. Never place ice directly on your skin.

5. Muscle strains

The most common strains due to running are in the hamstring muscles (which run down the back of the thigh) or calf muscles. Strains often affect new runners, whose muscles are not used to running. The pain of a muscle strain is often sudden and feels as if someone has kicked you in the area of your calf or hamstring. Most strains can be treated at home. Stop running immediately and apply ice to the painful area for around 20 minutes a few times a day (don’t put ice directly on your skin). Keeping your leg elevated and supported with a pillow will help reduce swelling.

COUNTING UNITS

How long does alcohol stay in your blood?

O

N average, it takes about one hour for your body to break down one unit of alcohol. However, this can vary, depending on your weight, whether you’re male or female, your age, how quickly or slowly your body turns food into energy (your metabolism), how much food you have eaten, the type and strength of the alcohol and whether you’re taking medication and, if so, what type. It can also take longer if your liver isn’t working normally.

How much is one unit?

One unit is equivalent to 10ml or 8g of pure alcohol. There are roughly: 2.1 units in a standard glass (175ml) of averagestrength wine (12%) 3 units in a large glass (250ml) of average-strength wine (12%) 2 units in a pint of lowstrength lager, beer or cider (3.6%) 3 units in a pint of higherstrength lager, beer or cider (5.2%) 1 unit in a single measure of spirits (25ml)

Adding up your units

If you drink a large (250ml)

glass of wine, your body takes about three hours to break down the alcohol. If you drink one pint of beer, your body takes about two hours to break it down. One pint of strong lager is equivalent to three units, so this will take longer. However, this time can vary, depending on the factors mentioned above. If you have a few drinks during a night out, it can take many hours for the alcohol to leave your body. The alcohol could still be in your blood the next day. This means that if you drive the day after an evening of drinking, you could be over the legal alcohol limit.

Men and women are advised not to regularly drink more than 14 units a week. Spread your drinking over three days or more if you drink as much as 14 units a week

ANOTHER ARTEDENTAL FIRST

Dentistry and physiotherapy, a multidisciplinary combination in the making

W

ITH his illustrations in the mid-30s, the gynaecologist and science figure Fritz Kahn managed to make the concepts of machine and human body remain related forever. In the visual style of Chaplin’s Modern Times, the illustrations of the German are small beings who converse and work in the human head to issue orders through various machines, photographers with cameras whose lens protrudes the eyelid or gears with cogs that crush the food inside the mouth. Images that reflect how the human body functions as a machine in which ever ything is connected through different systems such as the nervous, the cardiac, the respiratory or the digestive to achieve a perfect synergy. For medicine it is key to take into account these connections in the search for solutions to any disease or disorder. That is why it is so important that the different disciplines unite efforts in each patient. Today we see how, for example, cardiologists and pulmonologists work and research accordingly, or how stomatology has always been linked to dentistry. However, there are specialities whose connection is not yet so ingrained. This is the case of physiotherapy and dentistry. Noemí Dávila, physiotherapist at the Artedental clinic, in Puerto de la Cruz, explains that the goal of starting work in this centre begins with the rehabilitation treatments of the temporomandibular joint or ATM, the articulation of chewing. This, together with the muscles of chewing,

connect the jaw to the skull. Among the TMJ pathologies, bruxism, the habit of clenching and grinding the teeth due to, among other things, stress and a misaligned denture stand out. It can cause headaches, back, jaw, ear and neck. Any TMJ-related disorder is treated at the dentist, and if he sees it necessary, he is referred to a physiotherapist. The novelty of Artedental is that it has incorporated this speciality to the services offered by the clinic, betting on the fusion of these two disciplines. Dávila recognises that it is practically impossible to find such a fusion on the island. “It is true that there are physiotherapists who treat patients referred by the dentist in their private centres but this is the only dental clinic that I know that offers the two services.” Moreover, he continues, “most people do not know that there is physiotherapy of the face, specifically of the mouth. However, when you describe the mouth joint, you understand the logic. “ It is a work of coordination between the dentist and the physiotherapist. “The dentist sees the patient first, values the joint and the bite. It tells you if you need a discharge splint or if you have a muscle pathology, which I would try, explains the Artedental physiotherapist. “In the sessions we treat all the musculature of the mouth, the external and the

internal. We massage and stretch the chewing muscles and move the jaw. We teach exercises so that patients have more flexibility in the mouth, stretching and self-massage exercises to relax in times of stress. It is a very grateful treatment and from the first session there are results, depending on the complication of each patient.” In his commitment to this synergy, the medical director of Artedental, Víctor Cubillo, has also finished a master’s degree in Barcelona on occlusion (for bite treatments) and implant prostheses, the other great speciality of the clinic. “The objective is to offer the patient the most complete treatment and the combination of disciplines and training are undoubtedly the way forward”, concludes Cubillo.

SPORTS CITY

Massive boost for sport and grassroots football

C

D Tenerife and the island’s Cabildo intend to invest 12 million euros in the Sports City of Tenerife Javier Pérez.

The agreement includes a programme of promotion of sports for groups with disabilities, elderly, women and people at risk of social exclusion. Cabildo president, Carlos Alonso and the Club Deportivo Tenerife, Miguel Concepción signed an agreement to make improvements to the Sports City of Tenerife Javier Pérez, located in the area of GenetoLos Baldíos, in the municipality of La Laguna. The works, which will be executed by the club, have a budget of 12 million euros, of which nine million will be contributed by the Cabildo. The works will be carried out in two phases. The first one is scheduled to start in October of this year and will last for 12 months, while the second phase is scheduled to begin in July 2019. The forecast is that the works will be completed by the end of 2021. The works contemplate the construction of a multifunctional service building, whose lower part will have a grandstand for 500 people, a

grandstand with capacity for some 1,700 people, the construction of a residence with 40 seats, changing rooms and the improvement of the distribution system of the water supply for irrigation of fields and various associated infrastructures. Likewise, the club will develop a programme of Promotion of Sport that includes a set of sports and training activities aimed at the entire Tenerife community. Carlos Alonso said that “this is an historic day for Tenerife because this project will also serve to promote sports among children and young people. We are talking about works that will benefit all of society, especially grassroots football, but will also reach out to groups of adults, people with disabilities and which also includes a special focus on women’s football. This line is part of the Tenerife 2030 strategy of the Cabildo to improve the training of young people and encourage healthy living habits among

the population. We must not forget that sport is the best tool for transmitting values and is a key element for us.” Sr. Alonso had words of thanks for the Sports Minister, Cristo Perez, and the general director of the club, Pedro Rodríguez Zaragoza “who have worked hard to carry it out. The project had suffered some delay but thanks to them, was going ahead”. Miguel Concepción thanked the Cabildo and its president for their help “to carry out a necessar y project for CD Tenerife and for Tenerife. Here we all win, the club, the island and the base sport because they will be unique facilities for our children. From now on, the island will have the facilities it deserves.” The project was detailed by the architect, Máximo Javier Trujillo, who explained the phases of the work and the construction elements that will be carried out in the Sports City of Tenerife Javier Pérez. This infrastructure currently consists of four football fields - two of natural grass and two of artificial turf - and is the main engine of grassroots football on the island. CD Tenerife will develop

the Sports Promotion programme, which includes a set of sports and training activities led by technical and supervised personnel for the promotion of sports and training, aimed at the entire Tenerife community and especially in the football field.

The objective of this program is the realization of an island project for the improvement of grassroots football, by working in common with the clubs of the island and the creation of various permanent training classrooms that promote the recycling and training of

TWO DAYS

Adeje to celebrate 25th soccer tournament T

Santa Cruz full of excitement for Women’s Basketball World Cup

T

HE Women’s Basketball World Cup is being hailed as one of the biggest sporting events to be hosted by Santa Cruz.

The Mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, met with the president of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), Jorge Garbajosa to discuss the impact of the tournament to be held in the capital in September. The president of the Canarian Basketball Federation, Manuel Gómez, also participated in the meeting. Sr. Bermudez said that this meeting “ratifies the commitment of Santa Cruz with the FEB and FIBA for the realisation of this Women’s Basketball World Cup in our capital. Without a doubt, it is the largest international sporting event that we have had here in recent years and, in addition, it has served as an incentive to remodel the Quico Cabrera Pavilion and leave it practically as new after the process of integral reform that is being carried out.” “I am sure,” continued the Mayor, “that the spectators will immediately notice the changes that have been introduced in this sports facility. The best thing is that the Women’s Basketball World

Cup is taking place and it will be a great success, but the investment we have made in the Quico Cabrera will leave us a pavilion to be able to enjoy it for the next 30 years. “ Sr. Garbajosa confirmed that the works being developed in the Quico Cabrera Municipal Pavilion “are going better than expected.” He referred to the great expectation that there is already in the city in the run-up to the world competition. He said the commitment of the Mayor was another reason to confirm the choice a year ago of Santa Cruz as headquarters “and this was a just and correct decision.”

HE Villa de Adeje municipal football camp will be held on August 24th and 25th. “The football tournament is held in August to give priority to local teams, who can use it as a springboard to catapult into professional football. This year we will have a special agenda for turning 25 years, which we will be revealing progressively, “explained councillor for sports, Adolfo Alonso Ferrera. Granadilla invites sports grants

G

RANADILLA council has opened the application period for grants to clubs, associations and individual athletes.

The grants amount to 100,000 euros and can be applied for until August 21st. They are being co-ordinated through the Department of Sports, headed

by Sara Cano Delgado. The aim is to contribute to the promotion of sport and those who perform their activity in Granadilla de

Abona. Among the requirements are to be registered in the municipal registr y of neighbourhood associations prior to the date of the call. Sports federations and corporations, clubs and beneficiaries of nominative aid are excluded in this case.

Sara Cano said Granadilla de Abona “is one of the administrations that spends the most money on sport in Tenerife; besides being the venue for numerous events of international, national and regional scope practically almost every weekend.”

“This is a strong commitment from the area that directs any sport, because this economic support allows local groups and athletes to develop their work and tackle their projects, and an opportunity for Granadilla sport to advance,” she added.

Spanish mortgage news in June 2018

12-month Euribor, the base rate used for most mortgages in Spain, came in at -0.181 in June, a slight increase on the previous month, and the first time since 2013 that Euribor has risen for four months in a row. Euribor in June was 3.7% higher than May, but still 3 basis points below the same month last year. As a result, borrowers in Spain with annually resetting Spanish mortgages will see their mortgage payments fall by around €1.64 per month for a typical €120,000 loan with a 20 year term. As the next chart shows, the multi-year decline in Euribor appears to have run its course, and looks to be bottoming out before starting the long climb back to normal levels.

Interest rates used to be between 3% and 5% in the decade leading up to the financial crisis, and the crisis itself was partly caused by leaving interest rates too low for too long. Keep that in mind as you consider what the next crash might be like. New Spanish mortgage lending up 22% in April New residential mortgage lending increased in April by 22%, a big rebound compared to March, when the growth rate of just 2% was the result of seasonality. The average new loan in April was €133,456, down 3.3% compared to last year. 47.3% of purchases involved mortgage financing, with an average LTV of 75.2%, all according to data from the Association of Spanish Notaries. Whilst new mortgage lending keeps growing, there will be more money chasing properties in Spain. In hot markets like Madrid, Barcelona, and the Balearics, this will put upward pressure on prices.
