TOURISTS FURIOUS AT DOLPHIN POOL PROTEST

A

NIMAL activists have been slammed for their “irresponsible” behaviour after three members of the Vegan Strike Group jumped into the pool during a dolphin show at Loro Parque. The group says it carried out the demonstration on Sunday “because of the exploitation of dolphins, orcas and sea lions for entertainment purposes.” Vegan Strike says Loro Parque has been on its “wish list” for “a long time” and claims these type of shows are cruel and constitute animal abuse. The allegations have been refuted by Loro Parque, one of the biggest tourist attractions on the island, and also led to a backlash from people who were at the show. As the three campaigners wearing diving gear jumped into the pool, holding protest banners, they were booed and jeered at and told to “go home”. Loro Parque staff had to calm the dolphins at the edge of the water whilst the demonstrators were escorted off the premises.

The group alleged: “For the fourth time, our Vegan Strike Group activists have disrupted a dolphin show on Spanish soil. This was the 14th time we took action for the dolphins and the sea lions since the foundation of the Vegan Strike Group.” And they continued: “We took this action for both the dolphins and for the orcas as they are being exploited in this horrible park. The park has been receiving negative media attention for years, because of the exploitation of dolphins, orcas and sea lions for entertainment purposes. People are becoming more and more aware of the cruelty behind this form of entertainment.” However, negative comments have appeared even on Vegan Strike’s social network, with most claiming it

We strongly condemn this type of behaviour of the self-proclaimed activists who have put in grave danger the lives of these animals, of their trainers and even their own.

They have demonstrated zero concern for the wellbeing of the animals, their only objective is to attract the attention of the media. Loro Parque appreciated the reaction of the public who have expressed their indignation with this act of vandalism and also want to thank all those concerned for the support in the social networks.

In a statement on its Facebook site, Vegan Strike said it was “very satisfied” with their protest and claimed the three activists were not arrested or taken to the police station.

was an irresponsible act which could have harmed the animals. One person at the show said jumping into the pool would have distressed the dolphins and the protestors

“obviously lacked commonsense.” Another said the demonstration was “stupid and disgusting”. Another said ever yone was entitled to their own views over what constituted animal cruelty but this was not the right way to go about it. And another said: “This group makes no effort to

distinguish itself from other animal rights organisations in its invasion of what is home to a number of marine mammals at a highly respected zoo, putting them at considerable risk. Once again, we are shown, without a shadow of a doubt, that animal welfare is of secondar y concern to these people.”

Toll of hospital arson attack Their swift response almost certainly prevented the incident from being even more serious and potentially saved lives. The fire is believed to have been started deliberately by a woman with some sort of grievance against the hospital. She has already been arrested and remanded in custody, facing charges of arson and endangering lives and up to 20 years in prison. The hospital says 100 per cent of the building not

The Plaza de Europa, on August 31st and September 1st and 2nd, becomes the German capital, giving prominence to the country’s gastronomy, live music and international and handmade beers in the 45th edition of the Bavarian Week and Oktoberfest. The organisation reverts to a public-private collaboration management model. “This event is a clear example of dynamism for the municipality and for the downtown area of the tourist city,” said a council spokesman. In the previous two editions, a large audience was attracted, with more than 12,000 people gathering in the Plaza de Europa. This year counts once again on the support and sponsorship of the Rehabilitation Consortium of Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife Tourism and Puerto de la Cruz council, within a strategy to promote unique events, with a tourist nature and that boost gastronomy.

Tourism councillor, Dimple Melwani said that if there is a place in Spain where the Germans feel at home, it is in Puerto de la Cruz where German visitors are the leading international market and part of its culture. From Friday, August 31st at 6pm to Sunday, September 2nd at 5pm, the Plaza de Europa will become a small Munich, celebrating the muchanticipated Oktoberfest Puerto de la Cruz 2018, The tourist city will be transformed into “a real German town where musicians, t-shirts, hats, jars, traditional beer and local production craftsmen will meet in the centric place. The three “Reinheitsge-bot”, “Hüttenzauber” and “Blechbuckel” orchestras, with about 30 German musicians, will perform concerts, all of them free. Gastronomy will also have a special importance and prominence with hoteliers offering different dishes with a

Bavarian flavour. This year, prestigious restaurants in Puerto de la Cruz will be installed in the Plaza de Europa for three days: Hotel

Botánico, Hotel Tigaiga, Hotel Atlantic Mirage, San Diego Restaurant, Puerto Viejo Gastro Lounge & More and Taska La Alberka, will be some of them.

IVIL Guard officers arrested two young people aged 22 and 28 for theft and another of usurpation of identity.

In addition, the person who was driving a vehicle on the day of detention is also charged with a crime against road safety for not having a licence. The facts date back to August 7th when a property owner reprted that his home in Candelaria had been broken into and various valuables stolen, including several credit cards and gold and diamond jewellery , worth in total 50,000 euros. Following the theft, the cards were used in different commercial establishments. During the investigation, officers discovered that the pair had sold the jewellery in various shops in the island. Some of the items were later recovered.

The investment, from Puerto council and Tenerife Cabildo, amounts to more than 800,000 euros. The comprehensive reform began with the repair of the roof last year but other issues still needed to be dealt with, including water filtering from the ceiling. The Cabildo de Tenerife and Puerto council concluded the improvement works of the roof with an investment amounting to 334,502 euros and was financed 80 per cent by the island corporation and 20 per cent by the council. More than 25 parked cars go up in flames

P

OLICE have been investigating a devastating incident in Gran Canaria when more than 25 parked cars were incinerated in a suspicious

fire.

It happened on an industrial estate in Jinamar in the municipality of Telde in the early hours of the morning. Investigators believe it was almost certainly arson. Two people needed hospital treatment at the scene, a woman who had difficulty in breathing and a man who suffered a mild arm injury. The fire prompted a fullscale emergency involving fire

and ambulanc crews, the Canary Emergency Service and the police, both local and national. The incident happened just after 3am and affected 26 vehicles parked in the road. Some nearby homes were affeted by smoke and had to be ventilated, hence the medical treatment needed by the man and woman. However, they declined to be

taken to hospital. The emergency has led to a row because the nearest fire station to Jinamar, just five minutes away, could not respond because only one fireman was on duty, a situation blamed on lack of personnel. Therefore the callout was dealt with by the fire station at Arinaga, 30 minutes away. The Spanish press says that the car fires were dealt with by only four crew members and this issue has been officially raised with the authorities.

clubs which use the facilities. The exterior image of Miguel Ángel Díaz Molina is also being completely renovated. A metal grating is also being installed to prevent pigeons. Puerto council says the works programmed during this year will give “a renewed

image” to the centre. In the coming months, the pavilion will also receive one of the most sought after improvements by its users. The parquet of the entire installation will be replaced by one that will meet the approval specifications of the International Basketball Federation

(FIBA). Other work will include reform of the changing rooms, the installation of new markers, the replacement of the basketball hoops by some approved for international competitions, the arrangement of windows and the replacement of some glass windows.

BAGGAGE POLICY

Consumer goup critical of Ryanair C

ONSUMER watchdogs in Spain have accused Ryanair of making customers pay for the cost of recent strike action by introducing a new charge for a second piece of 10kg hand luggage. FACUA-Consumers in Action has severely criticised the new policy which comes into effect on November 1st and is calling on the Spanish Government to make an official complaint. “This seems to be a strategy of the company to try to offset the expenses caused by the compensation to passengers of the past flight cancellations,” said the consumer group in a statement. Ryanair says this will help to speed up luggage control but FACUA says money should have been spent on adopting measures to improve bag movements rather than “taxing users”.

FACUA says this is yet another measure which will add costs to people’s basic ticket prices and comes on top of other charges for booking specific Ryanair’s new policy will be: • Priority boarding customers (currently 30 per cent) can continue to bring two free carry-on bags (one x 10kg wheelie bag and one small bag). • Non-priority customers can only bring one free (small) carry-on bag from November 1sr. • If non-priority customers want to bring a secondnd bigger (wheelie) bag they can

buy a lower cost 10kg check bag for €/£8 at time of booking (currently a 20kg bag costs €/ £25). This 10kg wheelie bag must be checked in at the airport bag drop desk. • All customers with checked bags can now switch from the €/£25 x20kg bag to the cheaper €/£8 x10kg checked bag. The new policy will go live at boarding gates on/after November 1st, 2018 and for all bookings made on/after

September 1st, 2018. Responding to the claims, a spokesman from Ryanair said: “These claims are untrue. We don’t expect to make more money. Any increase in Priority Boarding and 10kg check bags will be offset by customers switching down from the current 20kg checked bag (€/£25) to the cheaper €/£8 10kg checked bag and many others will travel with just a small (free) bag.”

Wifi woes in Arona lead to rebuke for Tenerife Cabildo

A Marathon bicycle ride along Camino de Santiago CANCER RESEARCH

A

group of seven volunteers and the president of the Association of Children with Cancer “Pequeño Valiente”, José Jerez recently initiated a bicycle trip through the French route of the Camino de Santiago to travel 600 kilometres from Burgos to Santiago de Compostela.

The objective was to raise awareness about the consequences of childhood cancer in children and adolescents and to publicise the work carried out by the Association in the Canary Islands and elsewhere in Spanish geography. The ‘Pequeño Camino 2018’ project consisted of cycling five Spanish provinces, from Burgos, Palencia, León and Lugo, to A Coruña, an average of 60 kilometres per day. During the voyage, members of “Pequeño Valiente”, among them a young man who overcame the disease for years, met with mayors and councillors of some of the towns that they will visit. They were due to achieve their goal on Thursday, August 30th at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where they received a group of mothers with children who suffer from the disease. This initiative was supported by RIU Hotels, Fred Olsen, Tirma, Freemotion, Cajamar, La Caixa and Mundo T-Shirts, as well as the contributions of different companies, individuals and groups, such as the students of CEIP San Lorenzo.

RONA council has acknowledged Tenerife Cabildo’s effort to supply a wifi network in different parts of the island but says it is a good idea to make sure it works!

In the case of Arona, wifi has been installed on the beach and the main stop of Los Cristianos buses, Las Vistas, Playa de las Américas, Palm Mar and Las Galletas. However, although it allows entr y to the user, which accounts for access data, it collapses with unusual speed, so that it can hardly be used, which has triggered complaints from residents and tourists. The Cabildo says free use of wifi is now available in 32 points, mainly in the tourist municipalities. However, Arona council has reminded this institution that “in addition to installing the network, it is necessar y that it works properly.” “This is something that does not happen today,” explained councillor for recruitment, modernisation of the administration and housing, Francisco Marichal. Sr. Marichal says the Wi-Fi service “allows access to it, which accounts for input figures, but once it has passed

that filter, it hardly works, it collapses rapidly and can only be used by the first people who access it, which makes it a virtually inoperative service.” In Arona, the points of this network have been installed, in Los Cristianos, at the main stop of buses, the traditional beach of the town and Las Vistas. Also in Playa de las Américas and in areas of Palm Mar and Las Galletas, mainly oriented to its use by the tourists who visit the municipality. “It is necessar y to remember that Arona already has a population of almost 100,000 inhabitants and last year received more than 1.5 million tourists, so that when deploying the Wi-Fi network, it is necessary to take these figures into account, plan in a correct way, which is something that has not been done, “ said Sr. Marichal. He said complaints were received in the municipal tourist offices due to the “inefficient functioning of the network.”

Dramatic work in Puerto as caves filled under road

NEW GARAGE

Taller Aleman Heiko relocates to Las Chafiras

P

OPULAR mechanic Heiko is delighted to announce that he is moving premises but he’s not going far, new and existing clients will be pleased to hear.

D

RAMATIC work is being carried out on the beachfront of Puerto de la Cruz to shore up four caves which have been found under a road and near houses. The estimated budget of the action in calle Tegueste amounts to 525,000 euros and completion is scheduled for the end of the year. Puerto council started the work at the end of July after the geotechnical study carried out in the area. The Mayor, Lope Afonso said the declaration of urgency

in these works had been fundamental since it enabled “immediate action in the area”, allowing residents “to be more calm and confident in the resolution of problems on the street”. A large crane has been brought in on the land in front of the treatment plant. This allows the descent of a shovel

to the coastal area where the caves are located. At the same time, rocks of large dimensions, of five tons, have been deposited, which will serve to cover and later concrete the cavities. Town planning councillor, Juan Carlos Marrero said they were concentrating on the first two caves first of all, putting in bolts and iron joists which would srengthen the entire road. Afterwards, there would be concreting and covering of the caves,

in addition to making a fort with rocks to prevent the sea from reaching the repaired area. Likewise, work is being done on caves 3 and 4, located at the end of the street, next to the calle Bencomo staircase where a wall is being constructed. Puerto couocil says it has not been necessary to vacate any home. However, this would be ordered if necessar y, as happened when the road collapsed in May of 2015.

“Taller Aleman Heiko” is relocating from Guargacho to Las Chafiras in a very handy location for all, no matter which direction you are coming from. Heiko is German but speaks perfect English which is so handy for the British community here. He and his wife have run their family business since September of 2009 and have been in Guargacho on a site on the main road for ten years. Heiko says they are very pleased to be moving to more spacious, cleaner and “dust-free” premises in a unit on the industrial estate of Las Chafiras just behind Lidl supermarket. The existing garage is still open as normal until the end of August when the big move will be made over the weekend, in time for a scheduled reopening of September 2nd. Heiko and his wife look forward to welcoming customers old and new with their continued ethos of honesty, fairness, up front prices with no shocks at the end, politeness and nothing is too much trouble. Their contact details remain the same (922 734 316 and 637 407 444) if you need to ring them for instrutions on how to get to the new premises but we will also be telling you more in a future edition.

This activity covered its quota in the month of July and for August there are few places left. Calisthenics has been installed in the municipality with great force, developing the activity in the summer period in Valle San Lorenzo (El Almendro) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm and on Mondays and Wednesdays, at the same time, in Playa de Las Américas (Calle Las Madrigueras) This discipline is a system of physical exercises with one’s own body weight; in the system, interest is in the movements of muscle groups rather than in power and effort. SURVEY LEADER

Brits still love Tenerife for its beaches!

T

ENERIFE has been recognised as the favourite beach destination for the BritIsh, based on a survey of 1,000 families carried out by the online travel portal On the beach, leader in the United Kingdom.

The island is thus placed at the head of a list in which they are also found, from the second to the fifth place respectively, Mallorca, Costa del Sol, Algarve (Portugal) and Gran Canaria. Behind this group are Cyprus, Lanzarote, Costa Blanca, Ibiza and Turkey. The survey also reveals that most British families, 54 per cent, admit that they prefer that their summer vacation at a beach destination is guaranteed good weather, while 40 per cent say they prefer to travel abroad in their vacation so that their children experience other cultures. The same percentage says that the reason for choosing a holiday abroad is that the beaches are better than those of the United Kingdom, and 34 per cent consider that a holiday in a European beach destination offers a better value for money than in his country.

Cabildo pledges action over flooding hotspots

T

ENERIFE Cabildo is to invest 1.7 million in the improvement of rainwater harvesting in Santa Cruz.

The department of municipal cooperation, housing and water has given its approval to the technical report of the project for the installation of water collectors in the city. This work will provide the necessary installation to deal with the collection of rainwater in the southwest district, which will reduce the risk of flooding in this area of the Tenerife capital. The project, which has a budget of 1.7 million euros, will be financed 50 per cent between the Cabildo and city council. The execution period is 14 months. First vice-president and councillor of municipal cooperation, Aurelio Abreu, explained that the works are included in the Insular Plan of Cooperation of works and services of municipal competence of the period 2014-2017. He also highlighted the commitment of the Cabildo to collaborate with municipalities in solving this type of problem with the collection of rainwater, “as we have been doing in recent years, not only in Santa Cruz, but also in other

07

locations on the island.” Sr. Abreu recalled that in the case of the Tenerife capital, the insular institution, in coordination with the City Council, has also made “an investment effort” at other points, such as the Venezuelan avenue, the Acorán or La Gallega urbanisation, where important actions have been carried out for the collection of rainwater. The work of this project consists of the execution of a rainwater collector that will start at the intersection of Cercado Corazón avenue with the La Gomera roundabout, until it is poured into the La Monja ravine. The installation of a high density polyethylene pipe is foreseen and the conduction of wells will be provided to save the necessary height, in order to limit its speed in the interior. In the section of the avenue Hespérides, the collector will cross with an ovoid that currently exists of residual waters, coming from Llano del Moro. Surface catchment elements will also be placed.

ENERIFE’S bus company TITSA has taken possession of 30 new buses, presented recently by the island’s Cabildo.

President of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, accompanied by the director-manager of the company Interurbanos Trans-port of Tenerife (TITSA), Jacobo Kalitovics, presided over the formal hand-over ceremony. The 30 new buses will operate in different lines of the metropolitan area, north and south of the island. The budget for the purchase of this batch of vehicles amounts to 6.1 million euros. The island president highlighted “the intense renewal process faced by TITSA in recent years.” In addition, he explained that these 30 “guaguas” correspond to the fourth lot of acquisition linked to the renewal of the fleet that concludes in 2019. He advanced that the fifth lot, which involves another 30 vehicles, will be incorporated in the first quarter of next year. “With this last block, a total of 207 buses will be added to the company’s fleet in these years, which represents a renovation of almost 60% of

the fleet,” he said. The 30 new buses contribute in a special way to improve access to public transport for people with reduced mobility, since all of them have a low floor or lift platforms to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility. The buses will be incorporated immediately to different lines in the metropolitan area and La Laguna as the 023 (Tacoronte-El Pris by El Calvario and Guayonje, 026, (Santa Cruz de Tenerife -La Laguna by La Salud and Finca Spain), and

COUNCIL’S PLEDGE

Puerto beaches in excellent condition for swimming

P

UERTO de la Cruz has reaffirmed the good condition of its beaches.

More road works in La Camella

W

ORK is to begin to improve basic urban services received by residents of calle Divina Pastora in La Camella, Arona council has announced. This will involve the installation or expansion of water supply and drainage pipes, electricity supply, lighting, telephony and paving, all within the framework of the #AronaAvanza programme promoted by Mayor José Julián Mena. In the last three years, La Camella has been the object of the reinforcement of the public services of cleaning, gardens and maintenance, the replacement and improvement of sports facilities, the modernisation of the water supply network, paving of the

streets and the resurfacing of at least 16 roads, in addition to making available to residents the use of new technologies in municipal public facilities. “Calle Divina Pastora currently has significant deficiencies in the provision of basic urban services that directly affect the quality of life of its residents and to which Arona will put an end,” said a council spokesman. The work has a maximum investment of 220,000 euros and an execution period of up to six months.

Analysed samples confirm the excellent state of the waters for bathing in the municipality’s three beaches, Playa Jardín, San Telmo and Martiánez, the first two with a blue flag. “Several tests were carried out over the past weeks, which certify the excellent state of the waters for swimming,” said a council spokesman. “These microbiological samples do not exceed the legally established limits.” The analysis was carried out on August 6th and published on the platform NÁYADE (National Bathing Water Information System). The sampless in Playa Jardín and Martiánez have given results well below the established legal limit, being the values in Enterococci of 4 and 9 cfu / 100 ml, respectively, and in Escherichia Coli, 10 cfu / 100 ml, for both beaches. At San Telmo Beach, tests were performed on July 23rd, with values in Enterococci of 0 cfu / 100 ml and in Escherichia Coli, 7 cfu / 100 ml. Councillor for beaches, Javier González said these results “confirmed the magnificent state of quality of our waters in all our beaches, given that the maximum legal value allowed is 500 cfu over 100 ml and the data has thrown a result well below that figure. “ He stressed that according to the qualification of Royal Decree 1341/2007, of October 11, which regulates quality management of bathing water, Puerto’s waters continue to have “an excellent rating”. He hoped the next round of tests would also be positive and confirmed that at this time all wastewater discharges into the sea “are controlled and pass through the purified water plant”.

The fire crew was able to locate them through the coordinates sent by the WhatsApp application. Because of the difficult access, it was decided to rescue them by air with the GES helicopter. The Red Cross helped in the operation.

ENERIFE firefighters, based at San Miguel de Abona park, together with volunteers from Adeje were called out to a fire in a garage on Calle El Draguito in Granadilla. The alert was raised just before 11pm after black smoke was seen pouring from a garage used as a warehouse. Several items were stored inside, as well as gas and gasoline vehicles and bottles. Once extinguished, the ventilation tasks were carried out. Local Police, the Civil Guard and the Canary Emergency Service also attended. Firefighters also had to deal with a fire in a lorry parked on the Granadilla industrial estate. The fire affected the cab of the vehicle.

An off-duty national policeman and a passer-by caught the two North Africans in the vicinity of the Metropolis. The men, aged 29 and 35, were held in connection with the sex attack on a British woman, aged 22. Police said the key was the speed with which the National Police officer acted, together with another individual who chased and restrained the two suspects. The attack is said to have happened around 8am in an area of bushes in front of the Metropolis shopping centre. The officer, who was offduty, saw that a young woman was struggling with two individuals a few metres from

the sea. Subsequently, the victim ran along the coastal promenade shouting and asking for help, while the two men fled the scene. “In these circumstances, the police officer and another individual ran after the two Maghrebis and managed to intercept them,” said a police spokesman. The agent immediately alerted his colleagues from the National Police Station in the south of Tenerife who arrested the two individuals. Police said the woman had neck injuries and other injuries compatible with a sexual assault. The two were remanded in custody.

Shock in El Fraile over Arona council accuses “frenzied” man Cabildo of failing to A look after roadsides middle-aged man was arrested in the town of El Fraile accused of disobedience, resistance and attack on authority after trying to assault a local businessman.

Shortly before, the same individual had generated an altercation in the area of Palm Mar. Police said the man tried to attack the business owner with a knife but was thwarted. He

alarm among those who were at the scene. However, the Civil Guard has called for tranquility and says it was connected either to drugs or his psychiatric background and nothing else.

WO people were injured when fire broke out in the kitchen of a restaurant in Icod de los Vinos.

Police, firefighters, the Canary Emergency Service and the Civil Guard all attended. The fire crew proceeded to extinguish the fire, which affected the kitchen of the establishment and ventilated the building.

A 32-year-old man suffered burns to the top half of his body and was taken to hospital in the north. A 37-year-old woman also

needed treatment for mild smoke inhalation. The fire broke out in the restaurant in calle San Sebastián just before 7pm.

Local councillor for the environment and infrastructure, José Luis Gómez said they had already sent two written requests to the corresponding area of the island corporation. Arona council, he said, had tried very hard to improve the roads over the last three years and it wants the Cabildo to reinforce these efforts by looking after the parallel areas, such as the TF 66, TF 657 andTF 28. The particular sections they are concerned about are the TF 66 from Las Galletas to Valle San Lorenzo, the TF 657 between La Camella, Cabo Blanco and Buzanada and the TF 28, which runs through Chayofa, La Camella and Valle San Lorenzo. “All of them at the present time are routes of entrance and a showcase to some of the main localities of our municipality, whose residents deserve that their roads offer a good appearance and that the Cabildo attends to them in the same way as City Hall,” said Sr. Gómez. He recalled that “in these three years of mandate, we have paved 150 streets, many of which had not seen maintenance work in a decade and we have added about 50 workers to waste collection services in a bid to preserve our public spaces and roads in the best possible state, something that the Cabildo is not doing, which is why we have already written twice in order to ask them to take care of maintenance, which is one of the main competences the insular department of roads has.”

“INSUFFICIENT” PROPOSAL

Residents and Arona council unhappy about Guargacho roundabout

A

RONA council is pressing for the introduction of additional security measures at the roundabout project of the TF-652 in Guargacho. Following a meeting with residents and after months of meetings with Tenerife Cabildo, the local council’s departments of urbanism and infrastructure feel there are insufficient measures proposed by the island corporation for this “black point”. They are suggesting a raft of extra measures, including signs, lighting and a new lane which allows changes of direction without risks. The TF-652 road, owned by the Cabildo, is, on its way through the town of Guargacho, a real “black point” of traffic in which there are a number of accidents, some of them serious, especially at the roundabout between calle Camilo José Cela and Olimpia, says Arona. More than six months of meetings have taken place between the two authorities to draw up an acceptable plan which would meet the needs and wishes of residents. So far, however, Arona council is unhappy about what is being proposed and says it is insufficient .

Specifically, councillors for urbanism and infrastructure, José Luis Gómez and Luis García, respectively, consider that the project should be modified to include pedestrian crossings, the inclusion of dead guards and lighting, as well as stepping and signalling of the bus stop, as requested. The municipal proposal also contemplates the realisation of an expropriation of land that allows the construction of an additional road. That road would serve to make direct entry from the TF-652 to the industrial estate, Virgen del Carmen and Costa del Silencio. Both councillors have explained that “until now, the only roundabout that has been undertaken by the Cabildo de Tenerife in Arona is Malpaso, while in other municipalities it already has projects to execute others such as Armeñime or Oroteanda. This Guargacho scheme must become a priority for the island corporation, as it is a real black point of the municipality, in which numerous accidents

occure.” And they added: “We agree with residents present at the meeting that the Cabildo solution is more than insufficient, since the work must include essential elements, such as pedestrian crossings, lighting, an additional road and signage, among others, so we are going to demand their inclusion. We do not want patches for the municipality, but comprehensive projects that really improve the lives of the people who live there.”

BOTANIC SUCCESS

Record summer on the cards for Palmetum

S

ANTA Cruz is to invest 100,000 euros to improve the Palmetum facilities of the capital, the botanical garden specialised in palm trees located next to the César Manrique Maritime Park. This amount will be used, almost in its entirety, to carry out waterproofing work on the Caribbean waterfall, while the rest will be used to refurbish the car parks. Ninth deputy mayor and councillor of economic promotion, Alfonso Cabello, indicates that this budget item “will serve to waterproof the Caribbean waterfall, which will result in an improvement of the rest of the facility by minimising water losses that currently exist and that have their origin in this point. Similarly, with the remaining amount of money, there will be cleaning and refurbishment of the car parks.” He said the city council was very satisified with how the summer is developing in the Palmetum, which concluded last month “with the best figures in its history in terms of visitors in the month of July, with a total of 2,954 people. Those numbers surpass those of other summer months of the

past.” “The Palmetum has housed a total of 29,304 people in its facilities in the first seven months of 2018, which is almost 20 per cent more than in the same period of 2017. This fact makes us optimistic in the face of the final stretch of the year, where we are hopeful that we will be able to

surpass with a certain amount of ease the figure of 41,500

visitors that was achieved in 2017,” said Sr. Cabello.

man has died while practising spearfishing on a beach in Tenerife.

The tragedy happened on Los Troches beach in Punta del Hidalgo, within the municipality of La Laguna. The emergency services were told that a body had been spotted in the sea, about ten metres from the coast. Maritime rescue went to the scene with the emergency helicopter, medics, police, firefighters and a doctor and nurse from a local medical centre. A police officer first on the scene jumped into the water to recover the victim and once back on the beach, started resuscitation. The health centre staff were also brought to the beach but could only confirm the man’s death. Firefighters had to recover the body because of the difficult location. Police were told the man has been practising underwater spear fishing. He was aged 68.

This new initiative in Icod de Alto has been promoted by the Department of Cultural Promotion, directed by Adolfo González, through the Association for the Promotion of Visual and Performing Arts of Los Realejos (AFAVER). The theme chosen on this occasion is a tribute to the traditional practice of cereal harvesting and gofio, two hallmarks of the cultural heritage of the town and more specifically of this nucleus of Icod el Alto. WO people were injured, one moderate and one mild, in a quad bike accident in the north of Tenerife.

It happened on a forest track located in the municipality of El Tanque just before noon. One of the injured was a 39-year-old man who hurt a leg and was taken to hospital in the south. A 27-year-old woman suffered a mild facial wound and was transferred to the north hospital. Tenerife firefighters, the Canary Emergency Service and police all attended. Because of the location of the accident, the fire crew had to stretcher the couple to the ambulance.

Visiting the mural, Adolfo González said: “Mural art is another tool to enhance the cultural heritage of our municipality, as it makes its inhabitants proud of their historical legacy and their traditions on the street as a tribute to our identity.”

The council confirmed that “in the coming months will see the light of new projects of local artists in different parts of the municipality, as one of the strongest bets of this mandate from the Department of Promotion and Cultural Heritage.”

Arona council is completing the rehabilitation works of this municipal educational centre, which consist of improving the ventilation conditions of the dining room and laundr y, modification of the furniture, change in the flooring, painting and improvement in the systems of protection against fires.

The works have a budget of more than 40,000 euros and are part of the improvement process of the educational centres of Arona, which last summer led to the reform of the CEIP Perez de Valero de Los Cristianos. The Mayor of Arona explained that “to have a quality education in the municipality, it was necessary to undertake the reform of the centres which already have a significant age. As last year when we reformed the CEIP Pérez de Valero, in this period of school holidays we are immersed in the CEIP Valle San Lorenzo and the Municipal Children’s Centre of Buzanada, which will be followed by other educational infrastructures, always during holiday periods.” Councillor for the environment and infrastructure of Arona, José Luis Gómez, said that “this reform was a very necessary demand of residents and it was important to attend a centre that is nearly 15 years old and that needed modernisation works.”

All Saints’ Church update

I

am currently enjoying a very short visit back home in Oxford. Catching up with friends and family over a hectic long weekend has been a joy. Catching up with my dentist was less amusing. My dentist is Swedish. He is the only dentist I have ever had (and I have had a few) who has never hurt me, so going to anyone else is unthinkable. He was of course hugely interested in my present job and our inevitably one-sided conversation focused very much on the Church of England and, unusually, religion in general. And he couldn’t resist saying “vamos!” with a wicked grin as he was poised to inject my poor gum. There are other little changes. Recent rainfall in England has meant that the first sight of the country from the air is not the picture of endless brown fields that we saw on the TV news a few weeks ago. But what I found striking is a much more general admission, both in conversation and in the media, that the chaotic weather conditions of this summer are down to anthropogenic (manmade) climate change. Ten years ago I was working on a climate change campaign which aimed to raise awareness of the issue, in particular among church leaders – bishops and archbishops – and their congregations. In 2008, I was responsible for a climate change programme at the Lambeth conference of bishops, and in preparation for that I travelled to parts of the world already suffering from extreme weather. Places like the Bangladesh delta, where rising sea levels had made the surrounding agricultural land unusable, and

countries in Central America where unusually ferocious hurricanes destroyed the crops and animals of the poorest farmers. Because it is the world’s poorest people who feel the effects of climate change most and are least able to cope with them. The response of the Anglican bishops from across the world was, frankly, disappointing. Those coming from North America and, bizarrely, Australia, where drought has long been a problem, just didn’t want to know. While our UK church leaders were, for the most part, concentrating their efforts on saving water and energy in the home, rather than pushing for the legislation which a few years later transformed the UK’s approach to the issue. However, the feeling that anything we do now is too little too late has not gone away. I have always believed that legislation is a key factor and the prospect of the UK repealing EU environmental regulations post-Brexit is an alarming and dangerous one. The Earth is ours to look after and to pass on in good order to our children and grandchildren. How we behave now, whether it’s in our use of cars or planes or at the ballot box, can still make a difference for them. 62-year-old man died after falling into the sea in El Hierro.

The tragedy happened in Punta de la Sal in Frontera in the mid-afternoon. The Emergency and Salvage Group went to the scene with the rescue helicopter and was joined by the Canary Emergency Service, local police and Civil Guard. “The 112 centre received a call in which it was reported that a person had disappeared at sea after falling into the water in the area of Punta de la Sal,” said a spokesman. “Rescuers with the GES

helicopter reached the man who was floating in the sea and hoisted him to the aircraft. After confirming he was in cardiorespiratory arrest, the rescuers carried out cardiopulmonary resuscitation while they headed to the helisurface of the Hospital Nuestra Señora de los Reyes.” “Once on the ground, the personnel of a medical ambulance of the SUC transferred the patient to the interior of the hospital facilities where his death was confirmed.”

WO people suffered mild smoke inhalation in a fire in La Palma.

The incident happened in calle Díaz Pimienta in the municipality of Santa Cruz de La Palma just before 7.30am. The two injured, both women, aged 35 and 70, both needed hospital treatment. The Canary Emergency Service attended, together with a fire crew from La Palma, the National and local police. The 112 control centre was told there had been a fire in the kitchen of a house on the aforementioned street and that there were people inside. A fire crew extinguished the blaze and ventilated the property.

A

25-year-old man was injured in a “balconing” incident in La Gomera.

Police said he fell from the first floor whilst trying to access his home via the balcony. The accident happened just before 3am in the morning in the Plaza de Playa Santiago in the municipality of Alajeró. The emergency services, including medics, the police

and Civil Guard, were called to the scene following a call to the 112 control centre. “It was reported that a man had fallen from a first floor when trying to access to his home by the balcony,” a spokesman confirmed. The man suffered moderate head injuries and was taken to hospital.

T

HE Canary Government is pleding to reduce paperwork and bureaucracy for restaurants, bars and cafeterias.

The aim is to relax the current laws without affecting the rights of customers or the service and quality they receive. If agreed, a new decree will state that only the presentation of a responsible declaration will be required to open an establishment and confirms the obligation that all prices include IGIC (VAT equivalent). The proposed change is currently out to public consultation and views can be tabled by September 13th. A spokesman explained: “The Canar y Government promotes through this new regulation the reduction of paperwork and bureaucratic obstacles for restaurants, bars and cafeterias, reducing the administrative requirements guaranteeing at all times the rights of the users.” “The philosophy of this change is to guarantee and

increase the quality of tourism activities, the service provided to the consumer and the working conditions of the professionals.” Meetings have already been held with the restaurant sector. The Government says that anyone wishing to open a restaurant, bar or cafeteria has to present the responsible statement to the relevant Cabildo. This institution will then be responsible for registering it officially in the General Tourism Register and also responsible for making the corresponding verification visit of compliance with the established requirements. In the event that one of these is not duly fulfilled, the owner of the tourist establishment will be granted a period of between ten days and three months to rectify it. The procedures will be done online, also to speed up

openings. The decree also insists that restaurants should give maximum publicity to the price lists of the services they offer and that these have to be displayed in a way that allows them to be read without difficulty. These must also specify IGIC included. Likewise, the decree states that in the lobby or main entrance of the establishment, in a visible place and with legible handwriting, its internal rules shall be exhibited, to

include the conditions of use of its services and facilities, as well as the opening hours and closing, and the dining room or kitchen, in case they are different. Finally, the amendment establishes the requirement that catering establishments have at least one person who speaks Spanish during their working hours and have specific waste collectors, energy consumption measures, low lighting, water flow controls and energy saving appliances.

Canary Emergency Service once again proves its worth

T

HE Canary Emergency Service (SUC) provided health assistance to 154,169 people in the first quarter of 2018, an increase of 6,327.

January saw the highest number of assistance, with 29,599 people served. To meet all these demands for assistance, health resources were mobilised in 130,936 occasions, 3.6 per cent more than in the first half of 2017. This includes both terrestrial means, such as ambulances, medical assistance, coordination and rapid intervention vehicles; with

medical resources, helicopters and airplane. Added to these resources are doctors, nurses, sanitary emergency technicians and coordination technicians, as well as pilots and co-pilots in the case of aircraft, in addition to the Primary Care staff of the health centers of the Archipelago, which is activated in case of emergency. On the other hand, the

coordinating doctors of the SUC are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, attended from the operational rooms of the Canar y Islands 1-1-2 answering health care requests by telephone. The incidents attended, which totalled 156,389, increased by 4.6 per cent. Of the total number, more than 61,000 were related to situations of health emergency, that is, imminent danger to the lives of people. Likewise, 81.8 per cent of the incidents attended were classified as

illnesses; 14.6 were accidents - of traffic, domestic or other , while 3.6 per cent were classified as sanitary transport. With regard to the distribution of activity by province, the greatest number of incidents was recorded in Gran Canaria with 75,111, followed by Tenerife, with 57,700 and Lanzarote, with 9,315. Fuerteventura and La Palma agglutinated 6,851 and 4,560 services respectively and La Gomera and El Hierro 2,105 and 747 incidents.

Canary health chiefs give tips on sleeping in the heat

H

MASSIVE GROWTH

EALTH chiefs in the Canary Islands have issued guidelines to help people sleep in the hot summer nights.

The Ministr y of Health, through the General Directorate of Public Health, warns that intense night-time heat can disturb sleep and affect health, especially in the most fragile people such as the chronically ill, babies and the elderly, and recommends some measures to improve the night rest in conditions of high temperatures. “Alterations in mood, mainly irritability, as well as the inability to concentrate properly and the decrease in work performance are some of the consequences of poor sleep quality caused by the night heat that disturbs the body’s thermal functions and maintains the brain on alert during the night,” a spokesman explained. Complications for falling asleep are much greater in times of heat due to the body’s difficulties in regulating the ideal body temperature during night hours: 37 degrees, for

which the external temperature must be between 20 and 22 degrees. Vasodilatation and perspiration through sweat are the main mechanisms that allow the human body to lower the internal temperature. However, the heat disturbs these thermal functions of the organism causing the brain to be alert during the night, preventing rest. Measures to improve the night rest in episodes of heat include: • Take a shower with warm water or better cold before going to bed. • Avoid copious meals before bedtime, choosing light dishes such as salads, fruit juices, or gazpachos. • It is important to stay well hydrated, consuming water or isotonic drinks frequently, even before going to bed. • For a good ventilation of the bedroom, it is advisable that the doors and windows

1,528,248 visitors accompanied by 1,480,762 children, according to the data provided by Promotur Turismo de Canary Islands, dependent on the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands. In addition, the annual turnover in the Canary Islands of these tourists amounted to 2,519 million euros in 2017, while in 2010 it was 1,351 million, so the increase was 86.4 per cent in this seven-year period. As it happens with all the visitors who enjoy their holidays in the Canary Islands, the good weather and the sun are the fundamental reasons for the choice of destination: up to 91.5 per cent visit any of the islands seeking to get away from the cold or of extreme heat. In addition, virtues such as rest and tranquillity, as well as a wide complementary offer aimed at the discovery and enjoyment of each of the island destinations are essential to opt for the archipelago. In fact, 35.8 per cent choose the Canary Islands for the beaches, many of them with safety conditions that provide a plus for those who travel with children (lifeguard stations, for example) or with complementary leisure elements that add comfort and fun. Considering the archipelago as an adequate space for minors is another of the most valued points in their choice, with 34.7 per cent. Tranquillity and rest is important for 28 per cent, followed by the beauty and uniqueness of its landscapes (17.6 per cent), the possibility of knowing new places (13.6 per cent), the price (12 per cent) and safety (10.5 per cent). It should be noted that investment in leisure is more relevant in this type of visitors, as they contract more organized excursions, 22 per cent compared to 17.7 per cent of the rest, and more activities for fun, with 16.7 per cent compared to 8.4 per cent of the average.

POLICE REVEAL FULL DETAILS OF DAWN ARRESTS

Cocaine bust off coast of Canaries ended international drug-running operation

P

OLICE have revealed more details of the massive drugs bust conducted at sea after a tug carrying 2,500 kilos of cocaine was intercepted 500 nautical miles off the Canary Islands. The seizure on August 7th led to the arrest of its four crew members, two of Spanish nationality and two Senegalese. The following day, a large police device was developed that allowed the arrest of another 25 people and the dismantling of an important organisation of Galician drug traffickers. The joint operation was carried out by agents of the National Police, the Civil Guard, the Basque police and the Customs Surveillance Service and involved the vessel “Titan III” which was intercepted at dawn on August 7th. The boat transported 2,500 kilos of cocaine and was approached by the GEO of the National Police and a patrol of the Customs Surveillance Service. The narcotics were destined for the Galician coasts, hence the operation the following day. The boat, a tug called in

those days, Zumaia II, was initially detected in Bilbao at the end of 2016, initiating a joint investigation between the Civil Guard and the Basque police, which discovered its drug mission. Most of the components of this criminal structure were based in southern Spain and offered the ship to the highest bidder. From Bilbao, it moved to Galicia where it initially landed in A Coruña and then in the port of Vigo. It was also detected at that time by the Deputy Directorate of Customs Surveillance (Dava), in mid-2017, who also initiated an investigation into the tugboat in coordination with the Civil Guard and Ertzainza. From that date until the beginning of this month of August when it was approached, it followed multiple

displacements; to the south of the peninsula, to Morocco, to Libya, to Dakar and in the month of May, again to Vigo, in search of potential drug traffickers who required their services. During this journey, the boat changed its name to TITAN III, with the purpose of making detection difficult. In the latter dock in the city of Vigo (Pontevedra), in May 2017, the crew offered their services to a criminal organisation that was being

investigated by the National Police, so this police force coordinated with the working group that was already investigating the activities of the vessel. Through the investigations, police discovered that “Titan III” was known to be on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, a quite unusual route for this

type of vessel. The agents suspected that, during its stay there, it took advantage to carry out the loading of the narcotic substance. The boat was located both from the air and sea and was eventually boarded by the authorities, despite the very rough weather conditions. The cocaine was found in nume-

rous bales. The following day, 23 raids were carried out and 24 people were arrested, 21 of them in Galicia, two in Toledo, one in Malaga and one in Hueva. They included three members of a fishing boat which was being lined up to meet the drugs boat and transport the cocaine to the coast.

Raids uncover illegal trafficking of endangered species of turtle

HUGE HATCHERY

T

HE Civil Guard has dismantled one of the largest international organisations dedicated to illegal trafficking of endangered species of turtle. Within the framework of the operation COAHUILA, three people have been arrested and three more are being investigated (two detainees and two investigated of German nationality in Mallorca and a detainee and a researcher of Spanish nationality in Barcelona) , as alleged perpetrators of crimes related to flora and fauna, contraband of protected species and money

laundering. In the operation, more than 1,100 turtle specimens of 62 different species, both adults and offspring, have been seized, as well as more than 750 eggs. The operation began in February of last year when agents of the Civil Guard of Son Sant Joan Airport in the Balearics detected the shipment of several specimens

of turtles of the species COAHUILA. The majority of these specimens are covered by the protection regime of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which seeks to preserve the protection of species by controlling their trade and to which Spain has been attached since 1986. Once the shipment was inspected, the agents were able to verify that part of the submitted copies did not correspond to those declared in the consignment or to the documentation that

PAIN’S Minister of Public Works, José Luis Ábalos, attended the tribute ceremony for the victims of the JK5022 Spanair flight accident on its tenth anniversary,. The ceremony took place in the entrance gardens of terminal T2 of the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport and was organised by the Association of People Affected by Flight JK5022. The minister was accompanied by the Secretary of State, Pedro Saura, and the Secretary General of Transport, Mª José Rallo. In his speech, Sr. Abalos expressed solidarity with the families of the victims, to “accompany them in pain and recognise the Association’s constant work beyond the clarification of the truth.” In this line, the minister has stated his intention “to work and invest tirelessly for the safety of transport, not only the air, but

in all transport.” Thus, the minister has emphasised the importance of not neglecting the value of security, “rather than launching any infrastructure.” Finally, he wanted to thank the Association for, “in addition to encouraging us to improve in security, to be an example of caring for memory”. Sr. Ábalos declared that “this country needs to learn a lot in how to treat memory, how to treat those who suffer, how to understand their pain and the

memory of their loved ones.” *Spanair Flight 5022 (JK5022) was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Barcelona–El Prat Airport to Gran Canaria Airport, Spain, via Madrid–Barajas Airport that crashed just after take-off from runway 36L at Madrid Airport at 14:24 CEST (12:24 UTC) on 20 August 2008. Spain remains on level 4 terrorist alert

T

HE Ministry of Interior has decided to keep Spain on the level 4 reinforced terrorist warning, which remains unchanged since June

2015.

The Bureau for the Assessment of the Terrorist Threat meets weekly to evaluate any change in the situation of the threat. In view of events in Cornellà, where a man attacked a police station of the Mossos d’Esquadra with a knife, the Ministry called an unscheduled meeting of the Bureau to assess the threat and centralise all the work of anti-

terrorism prevention. “The decision to maintain the reinforced level 4 has been adopted at the proposal of experts in the fight against terrorism, with the endorsement of those responsible for the Ministry,” said a spokesman. The Bureau includes representatives from the Centre for Intelligence against Terrorism

and Organised Crime (CITCO), National Police and Civil Guard, together with members of Mossos d’Esquadra, Ertzaina and the National Intelligence Centre (CNI). In addition, to strengthen the security of the agents of the Security Forces and bodies and as a result of the evaluations of the Bureau, the Secretary of State for Security has decided to activate the protocol of complementary self-protection measures for the members of the security forces. .

accompanied them, so they proceeded to its seizure. Continuing with the operation, the Civil Guard made different inquiries to find those responsible for this shipment because those responsible had nothing in their name, which made the investigation difficult. As a result, the agents located a rural property in the municipality of Llucmajor (Mallorca), where two German

citizens lived. Once the illegal activity was accredited, the agents practiced a registration in the aforementioned farm, being able to verify that the hatchery was much larger than expected and that it had as its purpose the breeding “on an industrial level” of various species of turtles, both water and land. The illegal trafficking of these species mainly affects

those of Southeast Asia, from where the box turtles (Cuora sp.), Considered at very high risk of extinction. Some endemics from Mexico, the United States and Canada were also seized and protected by the legislation of these countries. In addition, there were examples of Moravian Tortoise cataloged as “Vulnerable” in the Spanish Catalog of Endangered Species.

Breaking down the figures in tourism activities, salaried workers increased by 3.5 per cent compared to the same month of the previous year and accounted for 80.6 per cent of the total. The self-employed, the remaining 19.4 per cent,

had a growth of 0.6 per cent. Regarding the branches of activity, in all of them there was an increase in affiliates: the hotel industr y grew 24,718 in the food and beverage services and 10,283 more in the accommodation services; in the travel agencies there was an increase of 3,963 workers; and in other tourist activities the affiliates added 32,090 more. Regarding data by autonomous communities, employment in hotels and travel agencies/tour operators grew in all of them, except in

Cantabria and Asturias. Regarding the number of affiliates, Catalonia is the community with the largest number, 309,454 and a growth of 0.8 per cent year-on-year; followed closely by Andalusia, with 307,920 and where affiliation grew by 3.8 per cent; and Madrid, with 210,813, 4.0 per cent more. Taking into account the volume of employed persons in the tourism sector in absolute figures, the largest increases occurred in Andalusia, Madrid, the Valencian Community, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia. These commu-nities account for 73.3 per cent of the total number of affiliates.

GENTS of the National Police have dismantled a criminal group settled in the Malaga towns of Marbella and Estepona dedicated to introducing hashish in Spain through nautical vessels for subsequent distribution to other points. In this operation against drug trafficking, eleven people - nine men and two women of British, Moroccan and Spanish nationality - have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a crime of drug trafficking and another of belonging to a criminal group. Nearly seven tons of hashish have been seized, one kilo of cocaine, 5.4 grams. of MDMA, 222,720 euros in cash, 995 pounds sterling, 900 Moroccan dirhamns and a firearm with cartridges, nine vehicles, 25 mobile phones, a GPS device, a frequency inhibitor, a bill

counting machine, three precision scales and two vacuum packaging machines among other effects. The investigation began last March. The agents were aware of the existence of a group of people, of Moroccan and Spanish nationality, who formed a criminal organisation dedicated to introducing narcotic substances into Spain through nautical vessels. At the end of May, the investigators detected one of those investigated when he was on board a vehicle in Estepona (Málaga). He was eventually

arrested and found to be carr yingseveral bales of hashish. The next day, another of the investigated was located in San Pedro de Alcántara (Málaga). He was stopped in a van which had 35 bales of hashish. In the course of the efforts to identify the members of the criminal group, the police located a group of people from the United Kingdom and Ireland and verified that it was the ringleader and four other members of the organisation. After confirming their involvement in the criminal activity they were arrested. A few days ago, the agents carried out the last phase of the operation and arrested four other members of the organisation.

Families with animals “should have free access to beaches”

C

AMPAIGNERS have been staging a series of protests on Spanish beaches to demand “free access” for animals.

PACMA, the animal rights’ party, says Spain has more than 3,000 kilometres of beach but families with animals have great difficult to enjoy them in full. “The discriminatory policies of the autonomous communities and the city councils do not take into account the demands of a part of the public who request to go to the beach with their

animals. When they do, these families are relegated to limited areas, beaches far from the urban core and next to waste disposal points or areas not suitable for bathing,” said a spokeswoman. PACMA says it has been requesting for years the free access of animals to the beaches or, at least, the

establishment of coexistence schedules so that all citizens can enjoy the recreational environments in the same conditions. To continue with this claim, PACMA called different concentrations in different beaches of Spain to “demand a solution to the situation of discrimination suffered by families with animals, which continue to grow in number in our country.” The demonstrations took place in Barcelona, Las Palmas in Gran Canaria,

PAIN received 8.5 million international tourists during the month of June, which represents an increase of 1.3 per cent compared to the same month of 2017 and expenditure was 9,395 million euros, 4.5 per cent more. The figures are the result of surveys of Tourist Movements in Border (FRONTUR) and Tourist Expenditure (EGATUR) prepared by the National Institute of Statistics. The Ministr y of Industry, Commerce and Tourism has welcomed the figures, saying it consolidates Spain in a leading position, especially due to the competitiveness of the destination. In the first six months of 2018,

Alicante, Malaga, Cadiz and Mallorca. “There are no reasons to continue maintaining the prohibitive policies that make second-class citizens out of those who live with an animal,” says PACMA. “Even more so considering that there is not a single hygienic-sanitary report that links the presence of animals on the beach with unhealthy or health risks for bathers. Nor have there been problems of coexistence in those few beaches where animals are allowed access.”

Smuggler disguised pure heroin with curry powder! P

SWAZILAND PASSENGER

OLICE on the Costa del Sol discovered 500,000 euros worth of heroin disguised as curry in a drug trafficker’s suitcase!

Security officers became suspicious of the 39-yearold Greek travelling from Swaziland to Spain because of the pungent smell coming from his luggage. He was arrested at Malaga airport when more than five kilos of heroin of great purity was discovered hidden in a false compartment of his case. The man has boarded a plane in Doha to head for Malaga from where he intended to take a bus to Barcelona where the buyer was waiting. Police said he became very

nervous at the airport so his belongings were searched. “ When opening the suitcase he was carrying, the agents perceived a strong smell of a characteristic seasoning used in Indian food, which increased their suspicions because inside it there were only clothes, so they decided to check the suitcase in detail helped by a scanner,” said a police spokesman. During the inspection of the suitcase, they discovered a false compartment in which they found four plates

impregnated in curry, with a clear intention to confuse the police dogs in the event of being searched. Inside the plates there

was a granulated substance of brown colour that turned out to be heroin of great purity with a total weight of 5,519 grams.

ACCIDENT FIGURES

Motorists warned to cut their speed and use assisted driving systems

S

PAIN’S driving directorate says it is determined to crackdown on speeding motorists after new studies showed a direct link between accident deaths and how fast vehicles were travelling.

Police have been stepping up speed checks with special campaigns in various parts of the country. In 2017, 400 people died in accidents in which speed was a concurrent factor. In some of the cases, says the DGT, some of the cars were going too slowly. In its latest report, the Organisation for Cooperation and Development “Speed and risk of accident” analyses experiences in ten countries around the world - including Denmark, France, Norway and Sweden - after implementing changes in speed limits or implementing surveillance radars. At higher speeds, there were more accidents and victims, while a decrease in speed is accompanied by a decrease in the accident rate. In addition, the report confirms that the risk of death of a pedestrian is multiplied by five when the impact speed goes from 30km/h to 50km/h and that on interurban roads, a reduction

in the average speed of 5km/ h produces a decrease of fatal accidents by 28 per cent. The report recommends reducing the speed of traffic to reduce accidents and victims and proposes a limit of 70 km/h on roads without a median separation between the two directions due to the risk of frontal crash; and 50 km/h in urban areas with intersections and high risk of side collisions and in urban residential areas, where vehicles share space with vulnerable users. In Spain, on conventional roads, between 2013 and 2017, the percentage of victims killed has increased by 12 per cent. This increase was 35 per cent in accidents at road exits, accidents in which the inadequate speed

is one of the concurrent factors of the same. The survey shows that if systems of assistance to driving (ADAS) was widely implemented, it would reduce the severity of accidents by 57 per cent and avoid a figure of 51,000 accidents and their consequences. Many of the ADAS available on the market have been grouped according to the different types of accident (collision, run over, exit ...) and many of them automatically reduce the speed of the vehicle if they detect a collision risk such as FCW (frontal collision); AEBS (automatic emergency braking); SLI (speed limit indicator) or ACC (adaptive cruise control).

Police seize stuffed lion for sale on internet

T

HE Civil Guard has confiscated a stuffed African lion that had been put up for sale for 5,995 euros on an internet portal.

The seller now faces prosecution for an alleged crime against wildlife by the possession and trade in endangered species. Officers with the Service of Protection of Nature (SEPRONA) of the Civil Guard of Barcelona started the investigation in July when they spotted the on-line ad. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the agents establish-

ed telephone contact with the seller of the animal to make an appointment and on August 3rd, verified the existence of the lion, with the authorisation of the owner. This animal species is an African lion listed with a high degree of protection in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The lion was taken to the Official Service of Inspection, Surveillance and Regulation of Exports (SOIVRE) for analysis and verification and is temporarily in the Castell Dels Tres Dragons, headquarters of the Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona. According to the owner, her deceased father-in-law hunted the lion in Namibia in the 90s and kept it in the storage room of the home.

G

OD forbid this should happen to you but if your vehicle is treated as a total loss (also know as a ‘write-off ’) it is because the cost for the repair is higher than 75% of the actual cash value of the vehicle or it has sustained so much damage making it unsafe and not roadworthy.

We really hope you won’t ever be involved in this situation, so it is best to be aware of some important aspects and to be really clued up. For example, Liberty Seguros recommends contracting third-party with theft, fire and total loss, because in cases where the client has third-party coverage only and it is their fault, you will have no right to compensation. However, in the event that the loss is due to the fault of another person, you would be entitled to compensation for total loss, even if you have only contracted third party cover. Most insurance companies compensate the total loss with the sale value of the vehicle but bear in mind that after three years of your car ’s life, depending on the car, it may have depreciated by up to 50%

or more, so your compensation won’t be that good! On the other hand, choosing the right insurer can make a big difference. In the case of Liberty Seguros, within the first two years after buying your new vehicle, you will be compensated with the value of your car as if it was new. And from that point on: • If the vehicle is up to three years old: you will be compensated with 80% of the value of your car when it was new. • If the vehicle is up to four years old: you will be compensated with 70% of the value of your car when it was new. • If the vehicle is more than four years old: you will be compensated with the Cash Value, plus 30%. What’s more, in case of total loss, Liberty Seguros does not deduct any type of excess.

Although no one wants to lose their car due to an accident, it’s always better to think about what different insurance companies can offer you, especially if you have just bought a new car! Just think, you will feel more content knowing that your car will still be worth the price you paid for it for up to two years after you bought it. Apart from all these advantages, Liberty Seguros has an extensive network of over 300 brokers and agents that are dedicated to providing unbiased, friendly and expert advice. Speaking your own language too, these brokers are available to discuss your needs, face-to-face, which is the best cover to suit you. With insurance, not only for car and home, but also life, pet, business, commercial, leisure, public liability and personal injury, today Liberty Seguros is considered by far, the expat’s number one choice in Spain. Allan McIntyre Get up to speed in new Swift Sport

T

HE South of France was the venue for my first drive in Suzuki’s new Swift models back in March of last year.

I was hugely impressed with the new-look little hatchback and thoroughly enjoyed my launch drive. So I was looking forward to getting behind the wheel of the third-generation Swift Sport when my invitation came in for its launch back in May. But days before I was due to join up with fellow motoring journalists I suffered a minor injury. It wasn’t too serious but ruled me out of travelling to the launch and left me extremely disappointed. The car went on sale in the UK in June and I eventually got behind the wheel of the Swift Sport a few weeks ago. And after my first drive in Suzuki’s flagship sports model I can say it was well worth the wait. The test car came in a stunning Burning Red colour and looked every bit a super little hot hatch. It sits closer to the tarmac than other Swift models and has a more muscular and

sporty look. This includes the fauxcarbon fibre skirting, nifty 17alloys and blacked out rear windows. The dual exhaust pipes are still there and you do get a nice roar from them when pushing up the revs. Like the rest of the Swift range, there are only five-door models. I love the hidden pillarmounted rear door handles on the Swift, especially when they catch out passengers attempting to get into the rear via the front doors. This latest edition Swift Sport is lighter and faster that its predecessor. The naturally-aspirated 1.6litre engine is replaced by a more powerful 1.4-litre 140ps Boosterjet turbo petrol unit – and there’s a huge increase in torque. The power comes through a slick six-speed manual gearbox. With an impressive sprint time from zero to 62mph in just 8.1 seconds, you quickly get the

feeling that this is a little car you are going to enjoy driving. The Swift Sport is quite happy pottering about in town traffic and was easily fitted into the smallest parking spaces. But it was out in the open that it really shines. With its new platform and refined suspension, the Sport really does go swiftly in and out of bends. It was super-agile as I sped along some winding roads, with great grip on the tarmac.

Push the revs and the engine responds with turbo kicking in instantly. And ride comfort was good for a hot hatch on some bumpy surfaces. Capable of reaching 130mph, the Sport was merely in jogging mode when driving on motorways at maximum speed. And it won’t need too many fuel stops on long journeys, with a combined fuel economy figure of 50.4mpg.

I liked the semi-bucket designed front seats that were supportive without being too hugging. And the driver’s seat height adjuster, along with tilt adjustable steering wheel, allows you to get the perfect driving position. The interior’s sporting touches include logos on the red stitched seating, alloy pedals, three-spoke leather covered steering wheel and chrome interior door handles

and hand brake release button. There are red accent panels throughout the cockpit and the rev counter also gets a red face with the speedometer coloured silver. Space up front and in the rear is good and boot load is 265 litres, expanding to 579 litres with rear seats folded. There are lots of safety features and the Sport also gets an enhanced braking system to match its performance. There’s also advanced forward detection system, lane departure correction and cruise control. Suzuki doesn’t skimp when it comes to standard features and you get loads of these with the Swift Sport. These include LED daytime running lights, rear view camera, air conditioning, DAB radio with Bluetooth and four speakers, smartphone link display audio and sat nav. There is no need for options and at an on-the-road price of £17,999, the Swift Sport offers exceptional value and super fun. It should have no problems in reaching Suzuki’s first full year UK sales target of 1,500.

After-sales extras for your car W

E all find that sometimes we have found the car of our dreams but something’s missing. That could be reversing bleepers, camera for assisting in parking, a better radio that has Bluetooth…... the list is endless. Often, we are put off adding these aids because we think it’s either not possible on our car or is too expensive. Here we are going to look at the options available here in Tenerife, which will not be as comprehensive as they would be in the UK but none the less they are available.

Parking sensors With these fitted a car senses its surroundings and they are probably one of the most widely used extras however they are not yet fit it as standard on all vehicles. The sensors are mounted on the bumpers and they detect the distance of obstacles e.g. posts, other cars, shopping trolleys even; from the extremities of the car, and deliver an audible beep which gradually becomes louder the closer you get. Some systems are now combined with a digital graphic (which looks similar to a camera or GPS screen) which shows which part of the car is closest to the object, allowing for a safer, more accurate manoeuvre. It’s generally possible to fit these to most cars and/ or vans and can often avoid scrapes and scratches and minor

damage to your car.

Reversing and/or 360-degree cameras These are a step-up from parking sensors, some vehicles now feature a rear-facing camera. Mounted high and pointing slightly downward, they show obstacles far more clearly than the rearview mirror can. These cameras use a wide-angle lens to give you a broad field-of-view around the back of the car. These images are relayed to the driver, usually by a screen mounted in the dashboard, and often feature guide lines which show the direction of the car based on the current steering angle and its proximity to obstacles. This is especially useful for those who have difficulty in reversing into allotted spaces or when reversing into a parallel parking space for example on the side of a road. The 360-degree cameras are generally fitted as standard on the new high-end vehicles such as BMWs and Range Rovers but it is also possible to fit on more “RUN OF THE MILL” for want of better description. With

this type it enables you to view more accurately the space available and the position of the wheels, this makes it far easier to see whether or not you’ll squeeze into the last available space or if you’re about to scrape those posh alloy wheels, or even your car!

Car Stereos I doubt that there are many drivers who are not happier than when they are driving along singing to their favourite song, all be it out of tune!!! However, many cars when first sold had pretty basic stereos fitted as well as small speakers so the quality of the sound is pretty mediocre. Many people like to listen to music from their phones or iPods or similar devices via Bluetooth but clearly the stereo must be compatible. So, to make your driving experience less stressful, more enjoyable and you a happier driver, consideration of installing one of the above might well pay dividends for you. CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS

Why is my dog being sick? S

IMILAR to humans, there are a number of reasons why dogs vomit. Causes can include eating something that doesn’t agree with them (the most common cause), eating too much, a food allergy, a bacterial or viral infections of the gut, inflammation of the stomach, consumption of something toxic or a foreign body stuck. Other potential reasons are gastrointestinal worms, car or motion sickness, heatstroke, Parvovirus or liver, kidney or pancreatic problems. Dogs are said to eat grass when they are feeling nauseous to make themselves sick and improve digestion but more often than not they do this for no other reason than it tastes good.

What should I do if my dog vomits? Repeated sickness, with or without other symptoms, requires immediate veterinary attention as this can – but not always – indicate a more serious problem. You should also go straight to the vet if you suspect that your dog has eaten something toxic, or if they are a puppy, as they are more susceptible to infections and can become dehydrated very quickly. One-off vomiting in a pet that is otherwise looking and behaving normally, without any other symptoms, is not normally a cause for concern but you should follow the tips below to ensure a speedy recovery: • Withhold food for 12 hours and then offer small amounts of white meat such as boiled chicken or fish with white rice. If there is no further vomiting, feed small amounts every two hours and then gradually mix in their usual food over 24 hours before giving them a normal meal. This should also be done for diarrhoea. • Do not let your dog drink too much water as this can result in further vomiting. Give

cooled, boiled water little and often. • If vomiting happens repeatedly or diarrhoea persists for more than two days, consult your vet. Even if your dog is no longer being sick, you should contact your vet if they are not eating or are depressed or lethargic.

What if your dog is constantly retching but not being sick, what does this mean? If your pet appears otherwise healthy and is eating, then consider whether your pet could be coughing – kennel cough is common. If your pet appears uncomfortable, dull and is drooling constantly, contact your vet immediately as this could be a sign of bloat or something being stuck in the oesophagus (windpipe), both of which are veterinary emergencies.

If your dog is vomiting bile, what should you do? Dogs, like humans, will vomit bile, which looks like yellowy green foam, when their stomach is empty. The substance is produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Some dogs vomit bile regularly for no apparent reason and it is rarely a cause for concern, but contact your vet if this becomes excessive. Not all sickness can be prevented but ensuring that your dog sticks to the right diet, free of any human titbits or leftovers, which can cause

serious problems such as pancreatitis (inflamed digestive gland), will keep their stomach in the best health. Make sure you keep any toxic substances such as chewing gum well out of reach and ensure that your garden does not contain any poisonous or irritant plants. Changing to food different from the usual diet can also cause stomach upsets. It’s best to make diet changes gradually. Take at least three days and start by adding small amounts of the new diet to the current one. Try to prevent your dog from scavenging by keeping your rubbish secure and, if necessary, by using a muzzle when your dog is in the park. Bones should never be given. Bowel irritation from chewed up bone fragments can cause gastrointestinal upsets and blockages.

How will my dog’s sickness be treated by a vet? This will very much depend on the cause. Antibiotics are not usually necessary but antacids and drugs to reduce nausea may be given. Other medication may be needed for different problems or further investigative tests required.

WORTH PRACTISING

Taking a horse’s temperature and pulse

A

horse’s normal temperature is 38°C, though this may vary by half a degree either way.

The horse’s temperature is taken using an equine thermometer (modern digital versions are preferable to mercury-based ones). Care must be taken when performing this procedure. Ideally, the horse should be held by an assistant. After being lubricated, the thermometer should be partially inserted into the horse’s rectum and tilted slightly so that it rests against the rectal wall. The thermometer should be held in place for a full minute before being removed and wiped clean. The reading may then be viewed. The pulse rate of a horse at rest is 30 to 40 heartbeats per minute. This rate increases normally with exercise and excitement, but can also increase when the horse has a

fever or is in acute pain. Likewise, the horse’s normal breathing rate can also alter, or appear laboured, indicating possible ill health or distress. The pulse can be taken at the point where the facial artery passes under the lower jaw. When the artery has been located, light pressure should be applied, using the flat of two

or three fingers. The number of pulses over a period of 15 seconds should be counted, then this number multiplied by four to obtain the pulse rate. If the horse shows signs of a fever or appears to be in pain, a veterinary surgeon should be consulted. It is worth practising taking a horse’s pulse before the actual need arises.

A great part of the fun of wining and dining in Tenerife is finding somewhere different and it’s well worth a trip out to Santa Ursula to the warm and inviting Donde Mario. Though from the outside you might easily pass by it, the inside is elegant and captivating. Restaurateur Mario Torres surprises us every day with his extensive use of produce in season, and his unbeatable experience with wines and cookery. Just try his Cherne warm salad, a super-healthy Canarian fish soup, or his Lomo de Vaca Morucha. You will be captivated.

Set in a series of old Canary houses, this restaurant is made up of a labyrinth of inter-connecting rooms leading off from the bar area in the centre. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an English country pub with its low ceilings with wooden beams and warm décor. The food is fundamentally Canarian. They grow most of their own produce at their allotment and only use olive oil to cook with. Their ethos is a simple one, only use the best, fresh produce and cook it with thought and care. The menu is described as Picoteo, slightly more than tapas without reaching the full-blown three-course meal status. It is delicious and affordable. “La Bodeguita de Enfrente” won the “II Gastronomic Awards Cruzcampo Gran Reserva El Día-Mesa Abierta”, which took place last year.

Why not try a touch of “picoteo”, the Spanish-style of eating where, as the name suggests, you pick a selection of dishes and share with your companions. You will find “El Calderito de la Abuela” in Santa Úrsula and it offers a unique and homely atmosphere combining Canary cuisine with modern creativity. In 2016, “El Calderito de la Abuela” won the “Best Canarian Kitchen Restaurant Award” in the first edition of the “El Dia-Mesa Abierta” Awards on July 28th. The exterior of this property belies what you will find inside as it is full of charm and carácter and there is an incredible view of La Orotava valley. “A gem” is how it is described.

T

HE Clownbaret International Festival (FIC 2018) will hold its twelfth edition between October 9th and 21st with a complete programme that will occupy the streets and stages of Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma and will feature international and national groups and a broad presence of local companies. This year the Festival presents a line-up in which artists and companies from Australia, Italy, Austria, the United States and several Spanish communities (Asturias, País Vasco, Cataluña, Castilla y León, Andalucía and Canarias) will offer more than 30 performances with laughter and complicity with the public. With the addition of street performances and cultural venues, the Festival will travel from north to south to reach the population of several municipalities, through the programme Tenerife Payasos en Ruta, with functions for schoolchildren and the general public, and will organise various activities such as cinema, visits to senior centres and workshops aimed at schoolchildren, families, elderly people, people with functional diversity and the general public.

Most of the FIC 2018 programming will be free and open access, although there will also be paid shows. Specifically, those offered by Australians The Umbilical Brothers and comedian of Italian origin Leo Bassi, who head the poster of this edition. The Umbilical Brothers will offer two performances during their participation in FIC 2018 with their show The best of the worst of the best. The Guimerá Theatre will host a single function on Friday, October 19th at 8.30pm and tickets can be purchased at the theatre ticket offices and through the www.tomaticket.es platform at prices ranging from 16 to 20 euros . The next day, on Saturday, October 20th, The Umbilical Brothers will move to Gran Canaria, where they will perform at the Teatro Guiniguada from 8.30 pm. Tickets are already on sale at the theatre box office and

of the best of their career to turn the public into an accomplice of their delusions. For his part, Leo Bassi will bring to FIC 2018 his show The Last Jester, in which he will review his 40 years of theatre career. Bassi will offer two performances, the first of them, at the Teatro Guiniguada on Friday, October 19th at 8.30pm. The tickets are already on sale, at a general price of 18 euros, at the theatre ticket offices and on the web www.entrees.es. The comedian will perform a day later, on Saturday, October 20th at the Teatro Guimerá, beginning at 8.30pm. Tickets have prices

between 14 and 18 euros and are already available at the theatre ticket offices and on the website www.tomaticket.es. This show is recommended for people over 16 years. Recognised worldwide for his extravagant theatrical performances and provocative actions, Leo Bassi is descended from an old lineage of eccentric comedians and circus clowns from Italy, France, England, Austria and Poland. The thread of The Last Jester is related to a discovery made by Leo Bassi’s sister, Joanna, in the archive of the Lumière Foundation in Lyon, France. In May of 1896, the Lumière Brothers filmed their great-

grandfather Giuseppe and his uncle Giorgio when they worked at the Circus Rancy in the same city of Lyon. They are very valuable recordings, probably the first moving images in history. FIC 2018 will also offer the possibility of learning about the art of comedy with a buffoon workshop given by Leo Bassi between October 15 and 17, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, at the Tenerife headquarters of the School of Actors of Canary Islands. The cost of this master class is 90 euros if the registration is formalised before September 1, and 100 euros if done later. Registration can be done by sending an email to festivalfic@gmail.com

The local council’s sports department has opened the registration period to participate in the fourth edition of the “Santa Rosalía traditional wooden carriage descent”, a curious race of cars made in an artisanal way. It has a double objective. PUERTO SHOWS

Varied and entertaining line-up at Sala Timanfaya T HE Sala Timanfaya in Puerto de la Cruz has reopened its doors with various proposals for residents and tourists.

Comedy, tango, a musical and a review of the classics are some of the projects with which this cultural space resumes its activity in collaboration with the Performing Arts Season of the Círculo de Bellas Artes. The programme is aimed at both the local population and tourists, with each show presenting a “mini season” of six weeks every Wednesday, Thursday , Friday and Saturday. Tickets can be purchased at the box office of the venue or on the website tomaticket.es. Although there have already been several events during the month of July, August 11th saw the premiere of a comedy starring actresses Crisol Carabal and Rocío Muñoz divided into the three short stories of “Cómplices”, “Ligeras” and “Psychotic.” Remaining dates for this show are the Saturdays of September 1st and 15th. Another show is “Amy Winehouse. The musical. Chronicle of a death announced “which spotlights on the life of the British singer and

composer. Tickets can be purchased at 15 euros for the remaining performances on August 29th as well as on September 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th. Meantime, aimed at all foreign audiences, the “Tango show” is dedicated to this Argentine dance. Catch performances on August 30th and September 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th with a dozen tango dancers and singers. Start time 10pm with admission price of 15 euros. More than 20 actors, dancers and singers make up the show “La casa de Bernarda Malva”, a musical adaptation of the work of Andalusian poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, settling in “la movida” in the 80s and using classics of the time, apart from cabaret themes from the famous variety rooms of that time. On Friday, August 31st and September 7th, from 9.30pm and with an entry price of eight euros, this piece will be staged as a result of the need

to demand freedom of expression in a repressive framework, adding LGBT and feminist content to the plot, in which the characters face various conflicts present in the daily life of Spain at the time. This adaptation is written and directed by the Santa Cruz Ariadna Simó, artistic and scenic director who directs the cultural space Escuela Interpretarte and the Ama-

teatro theater company, made up of women affected by breast cancer. This piece highlights that the cast has received classes in interpretation, singing, dance and notions of musical theatre during the assembly. Thus, “The house of Bernarda Malva” is not presented as a professional show but as an opportunity for training and scenic experience for amateur artists.

The cultural offer is completed with a more interactive programme, consisting of workshops, a competition and recital of poetry, a photography contest and a meeting of students of music schools. “It is a set of proposals with which attendees become active participants who can learn different musical styles, delve into our folklore or publicly deploy their skills in singing or playing an instrument

SENSIBLE DRINKING

No instant cure to a hangover! S

PLITTING headaches, sickness, dizziness, dehydration: anyone who’s ever drunk too much knows the consequences of it.

Alcohol is a diuretic (meaning it removes fluids from the body), so drinking excessively can lead to dehydration. Dehydration is what causes many of the symptoms of a hangover. Alcohol can upset your stomach and give you a bad night’s sleep. You may still have some alcohol in your system the next morning.

Cure myth Hangover cures are generally a myth. There are no cures for a hangover. There are tips for avoiding hangovers and for easing the symptoms if you have one. The best way to avoid a hangover is not to drink. If you decide to drink, do it sensibly and within the recommended limits. To minimise the risk of future serious health problems, men shouldn’t regularly drink more than three to four units a day. Women shouldn’t regularly drink more than two to three units a day. To avoid a hangover, don’t drink more than you know your body can cope with. If you’re not sure how much that is, be careful.

Know your units You can keep track of how many units you’re consuming using the Change4Life Drinks Tracker app available from iTunes and Google Play. A large glass of wine, for instance, contains around three units. In one evening, that can quickly add up to a lot more than you intended to drink. Here are some examples: a a a a a

can of standard lager, beer or bitter – 1.8 units pint of standard lager, beer or bitter – 2.3 units small glass of wine (125ml) – 1.5 units large glass of wine (250ml) – 3 units measure of spirits (25ml) – 1 unit

Follow these tips to keep hangovers away: Don’t drink on an empty stomach. Before you go out, have a meal that includes carbohydrates (such as pasta or rice) or fats. The food will help slow down the body’s absorption of alcohol. Don’t drink dark-coloured drinks if you’ve found that you’re sensitive to them. They contain natural chemicals called congeners (impurities), which irritate blood vessels and tissue in the brain and can make a hangover worse. Drink water or non-fizzy soft drinks in between each alcoholic

drink. Carbonated (fizzy) drinks speed up the absorption of alcohol into your system. Drink a pint or so of water before you go to sleep. Keep a glass of water by the bed to sip if you wake up during the night.

The NHS recommends: Men should not regularly drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day Women should not regularly drink more than 2-3 units a day If you’ve had a heavy drinking session, avoid alcohol for 48 hours “Regularly” means drinking this amount every day or most days of the week.

The morning after If you wake up the next morning feeling terrible, you probably didn’t follow this advice. Although there are no real cures for hangovers, there are ways to ease the symptoms. Treatment involves rehydrating the body so it can deal with the painful symptoms (though the best time to rehydrate is before going to sleep). Over-the-counter painkillers can help with headaches and muscle cramps. Paracetamol-based remedies are usually preferable, as aspirin may further irritate the stomach and increase nausea and sickness. Sugary foods may help you feel less trembly. In some cases, an antacid may be needed to settle your stomach first. Bouillon soup, a thin vegetable-based broth, is a good source of vitamins and minerals, which can top-up depleted resources. Its main advantage is that it’s easy for a fragile stomach to digest. You can replace lost fluids by drinking bland liquids that are easy on the digestive system, such as water, soda water and isotonic drinks (available in most shops). “Hair of the dog” (drinking more alcohol) does not help. Drinking in the morning is a risky habit, and you may simply be delaying

the appearance of symptoms until the alcohol wears off again. If you’ve had a heavy drinking session, hangover or not, doctors advise that you wait 48 hours before drinking any more alcohol, in order to give your body tissues time to recover. Sometimes, of course, a hangover makes that advice easier to follow.

Why you must visit a doctor if you suspect diabetes

D

GROWING PROBLEM

IABETES is a lifelong condition that causes a person’s blood sugar level to become too high.

There are two main types of diabetes – type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1. In the UK, around 90 per cent of all adults with diabetes have type 2. There are 3.9 million people living with diabetes in the UK. That’s more than one in 16 people in the UK who has diabetes (diagnosed or undiagnosed). This figure has nearly trebled since 1996, when there were 1.4 million. By 2025, it is estimated that 5 million people will have diabetes in the UK. Many more people have blood sugar levels above the normal range, but not high enough to be diagnosed as having diabetes. This is sometimes known as prediabetes. If your blood sugar level is above the normal range, your risk of developing full-blown diabetes is increased. It’s ver y important for diabetes to be diagnosed as early as possible because it will get progressively worse if left untreated. Type 1 diabetes can develop quickly over weeks or even days.

Many people have type 2 diabetes for years without realising because the early symptoms tend to be general. If you’re diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, you’ll need insulin injections for the rest of your life. You’ll also need to pay close attention to certain aspects of your lifestyle and health to ensure your blood glucose levels stay balanced. For example, you’ll need to eat healthily, take regular exercise and carry out regular blood tests. In type 2 diabetes, you may be able to control your symptoms simply by eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and monitoring your blood glucose levels. However, as type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition, you may eventually need medication, usually in the form of tablets. Type 2 diabetes is often associated with obesity. Obesityrelated diabetes is sometimes referred to as maturity-onset diabetes because it’s more common in older people. If you have diabetes, your eyes are at risk from diabetic retinopathy, a condition that can lead to sight loss if it’s not treated.

ARTEDENTAL ADVICE

Don’t let tooth pain ruin your rest

T

HE pains related to dental problems could be among the most severe, such as nephriticcolic or the experience of childbirth.

Its intensity is such that even from the times of the Egyptian civilisation, there are records of its existence and its possible causes. Then, it was thought that the pain was caused by worms that lived inside the teeth, drinking blood and feeding on the roots of the jaws. This “ Worm Theory”, as it is known, would be shared in Mesopotamia and Europe for centuries; and to mitigate the pain of said “worm”, opium, mandrake or hashish were used.

enough to use special toothpastes for this.

Today it is known that the causes have little to do with worms that inhabit the inside of the teeth and their remedies will depend on the disorders that cause it. If it happens that the pain appears in the middle of the holidays or in a foreign destination, it is best to go to reputable clinics where it is possible to receive care in your own language, since it is most likely that the discomfort will not improve with time but make it worse. The experts of the Artedental clinic in Puerto de la Cruz, with more than a decade attending the British and German public in Tenerife, offer the following as possible causes of these discomforts; and they offer advice for their possible solution, always emphasising that the best option is a visit to the professionals.

Gum disease (gingivitis, periodontitis): if the bacteria that are established on the surface of the teeth are not eliminated by daily hygiene, they can inflame the gums and affect the gum tissue and the bone that supports the gum and tooth. When it has only affected the gingival tissue, it is about gingivitis and its most evident sign is the bleeding of the gums. If it reaches the bone, it will have passed to periodontitis, and the damage can be irreversible, even causing tooth loss. Daily brushing and flossing are the best option during the first phase of the disease. However, in its advanced phase will require a dental cleaning and even the smoothing of the gums by professionals.

The pain of teeth or molars appears because, in some way, the nerves that are part of them have been affected. Either by exposure of the roots, breakage of a tooth, decay or infections. Among the most common causes are the following diagnosis: Dental sensitivity: it is the pain caused by the sensation of cold or heat, or acid or sweet substances. If it is strictly dental sensitivity, without signs of tooth decay or infection, it should be

Caries: occurs when the plaque attacks the external surface of the teeth. These bacteria produce acids that consume enamel. If they reach the dentin, inside the tooth, it is possible that they reach the nerves, causing intense pain. In this case it is essential to go to the dentist to assess the development phase and what is the best treatment in each case.

Fractures or loss of teeth: the fractures can appear by simple wear, by blows or by biting hard objects. In these cases, it is common to feel pain or sensitivity to changes in temperature because the enamel is exposed. The options in these cases range from filling the crack to the use of crowns if necessary. Some cracks are so subtle that patients may not know that their pain is caused by them. This is why it is so important to visit the dentist and that he or she diagnoses the best treatment.

Molar eruption: if the wisdom teeth do not have space to align with the rest of teeth, they are trapped under the gum, causing great pain. Removing them is the most common option. Bruxism: the lack of alignment between the upper and

lower arches can cause significant problems in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which is responsible for movement and for fastening the jaw to the bone. This requires attention not only from the dentist, but also from the orthodontist and even from a mouth physiotherapist.

Precisely for this, Artedental have incorporated in the clinic the services of a physiotherapist, to combine the multidisciplinary attention to the patient in a complete way. Do not forget that the best option will always be to prevent pain, explain from Artedental,

but for this it is necessary to comply with regular visits to the dentist, at least once a year. It does not seem like much, but the truth is that most patients go to professionals when the pain has already manifested, unequivocal proof that something is wrong.

Heart-friendly Golf booms in Tenerife as La Laguna tourism targets Sweden acquires more defibrillators

G

OLF is booming in Tenerife and further growth is expected. Tenerife Cabildo says the tourist spending of golfers last year on the island is estimated at 83 million euros for the total of their holidays.

L

A Laguna has acquired 31 new defibrillators that will go to the sport in the municipality.

Three of these devices will be used for outdoor sports events, the local council has announced. The aim is to offer greater safety for people who practise sports both in these sporting facilities and in outdoor sports events. The defibrillators are stateof-the-art, Samaritan pad 350P from HeartSine. Of semi-automatic character, they have an intelligent system which gains more than a minute in defibrillation. In addition, it has a patented biphasic scope wave, which optimises the download according to the needs of each person. These defibrillators are the most resistant of the market and the lightest, with only 1.1 kilos of weight. These devices have been placed in the sports facilities of Milan (Tejina), Punta del Hidalgo, Mayber, Princess Yballa, La Candelaria district, La Hornera, Las Carboneras, El Batán, El Pico (Tejina),

Bajamar, Libertad I and II , El Rocío, Finca Espna, José Anchieta, Ayatimas, Los Andenes, San Diego, San Felipe, San Luis Gonzaga, Valle Colino, Villa Hilaria, Los Verdeños, Ofra, Pérez Soto, La Verdellada, Camino La Villa and Las Canteras. These defibrillators are added to the 12 that the sports department acquired at the beginning of this year; the devices were selected after advice provided by a hospital centre of the island that consisted of the analysis of the different equipment offered by the different providers. Mayor José Alberto Díaz and sports councillor Agustín Hernández received the provider who explained the characteristics of this type of defibrillator. Sr.Díaz said this acquisition is part of the project of cardioprotected municipal sports facilities launched by its Government.

Tenerife Tourism, through its Tenerife Golf brand, recently attended the Nordea Masters in Sweden, one of the main golf events on the continent held in Gothenburg. Tourism Adviser, Alberto Bernabé said: “Golfers left an estimated revenue of 83 million euros last year in Tenerife, which gives an idea of the importance of this segment of travellers.” The island has eight courses, plus Tecina Golf in La Gomera, also associated with Tenerife Golf.

Sr. Bernabé said the promotion in Sweden sought to consolidate the arrival of golf players to the island from that country, one of Tenerife’s main markets for this sport, as well as to maintain permanent contact with Swedish tour operators and, in general, , of the Nordic countries . Sweden has more than 600,000 golf players and is one of the European countries with the greatest enthusiasm for this sport. In Tenerife, the increase in golf fees (rate that golfers pay

to play in a course) in the last five years is more than 30,000: 325,610 in 2017 compared to 293,896 in 2013, almost ten per cent. The players resident in Tenerife spent in 2017 a total of 77,362 green fees. Among them, those of British, German and Spanish nationalities stand out. In relation to non-residents, green fees spent amounted to 248,248 last year, with travellers from the United Kingdom standing out with 85,885; Germany, with 65,308, Nordic countries, with 24,602; Spain, with 21,540; and Sweden, with 13,110. In 2017, 1.5 percent of tourists who visited Tenerife practiced golf, which represents about 75,000.

The average age is 52.2 years, and their median income (84,000 euros) is 23 per cent higher than the average number of tourists who spend their holidays on the island. Their stay in Tenerife is around 10.7. days, also above the average which is nine days. They rent more cars that the rest of the travellers and spend about 1,600 euros per person and stay, almost double than other tourists who arrive at the destination. The annual income that the golfers contribute to the island is estimated at 83 million euros for the set of expenses on their holidays, of which about 20 million are specific to the practice of golf.

Much-needed extension to sports pavilion

T

HE Mayor of Los Realejos, Manuel Domínguez has announces the start of the expansion works of the Sports Complex Basilio Labrador Pavilion.

The project has a total investment of 898,627.91 euros and is co-financed between the local council and Tenerife Cabildo. It will involve the provision of a second multi-purpose sports field due to demand and over-use of the current pavilion. “We aim to create a sports space that complies with all the regulatory approvals of different disciplines of the field, which is suitable for official competitions of different modalities,” said Sr. Domingues. The project also includes the provision of the necessary sports equipment and a state-of-the-art surface that meets all these requirements. The resulting pavilion will be internally connected with the existing one, from which it will use the same services and changing rooms.

Arona’s grassroots’ soccer teams in new deal with Italy Soccer squads in Arona are to get first-hand training from Italy!

Introducing Tina, a very special turtle

S

ANTA Cruz has welcomed Tina, the mascot of the Women’s Basketball World Cup.

This particular specimen of loggerhead turtle, the work of Raúl Pena, will be the image of the competition that will take place in Tenerife from September 22nd to 30th. “Tina symbolises the evolution of a tireless fighter from birth until, at last, she is able to achieve her dream,” said the author. The headquarters of the city council was the setting chosen by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) to welcome the mascot, in an act that included the participation of councillor for sports of the capital, Verónica Meseguer; the vice president of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) and general director of the Women’s Basketball World Cup, José Antonio Montero; as well as Raúl Pena. The Mayor of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, José Alberto Díaz, also attended the inauguration; Tenerife Cabildo’s sports councillor, Cristo Pérez; and the president of the Canarian Basketball Federation, Manuel Gómez, among others.

Verónica Meseguer highlighted the “international projection that Santa Cruz will get for being the host of this tournament”. José Antonio Montero, for his part, stressed that Tina the turtle “will be the ambassador of the values of the sport and the island. It is an endearing turtle, as are all those who live in Tenerife, and I am sure that it will be remembered with much affection in a few years as the image of a tournament that we intend that, as happened in 2014, with the Men’s World Cup be considered the best in history.” The general director of the competition stressed that the idea is that the Women’s Basketball World Cup of Tenerife “transcends beyond sports, with more than 50 previous activities related to social, cultural and equality aspects. In addition, there will also be others that will take place once the tournament concludes and that will come, fundamentally, from the hand of the presence of the Spanish men’s team on the island.”

C

OACHES and instructors of AC Chievo Verona will travel to Arona from September to advise and teach their work methodology to the football teams of the municipality. The agreement also means that at the end of the season, six girls and boys from each club and six monitors will travel to Italy to perfect their technique in the facilities of this club, improving the level of the teams and opening doors to local talent. Four local clubs have joined: the Arona Furia Sports Club, Buzanada Sports Club, Ibarra Sports Union and Igara Sports Club. The Associazione Calcio ChievoVerona is an Italian football club that is part of the so-called Serie A of this country, the highest category of the Italian league system.

One hundred per cent subsidised by the Sports Board itself, this programme will redirect local sport, open it up to new techniques from the highest soccer category in Italy, while giving professional opportunities to local talents abroad . The Mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, explained that “this agreement with AC Chievo Verona will allow local clubs that wish to receive advice at the highest football level, both for their instructors and coaches as well as for the players themselves, which is going to translate into a consolidation of the teams

themselves, all at a time when they all have facilities significantly better than we are at the beginning of the current term.” “Encouraging grassroots sports is fundamental for this government group because it

means sowing the seeds of a healthy and responsible life in those who are going to be the future citizens of the municipality and that is also part of the sustainability of which we have done flag in these three years,” he added.

Sports venue improvements before World Cup

T

ENERIFE Cabildo has invested 339,000 euros in the improvements of the Santiago Martín Sports Pavilion in La Laguna.

The installation is usually used by Iberostar Tenerife and will host the Women’s Basketball World Cup in September. The planned works are related to lighting, the parquet flooring and improvements in security. Sports Minister, Cristo Pérez and Ideco’s CEO, Eusebio Díaz, recently visited the facility to check the work being carried out. This includes the installation of a technical lighting system for the sports track with latest projectors, ArenaVision Leds generation, which includes a Spectacular-Show programmable lighting. The flooring is also being improved. Likewise, the UCO organisational control booth will be installed to coordinate the security of events, with a strategic situation and general vision of the venue. The Santiago Martín Sports Pavilion is usually used by the IberostarTenerife participating in the ACB Liga Endesa and will be venue of the XVIII Women’s Basketball World Cup 2018 to be held in Tenerife from September 22nd to 30th, 2018.

Spanish home sales in June 2018: Modest growth but some coastal markets pause for breath, while Balearic sales fall for second month running

The number of Spanish home sales inscribed in the Land Registry rose by two percent in June compared to the same month last year, show the latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). However, sales declined 18% in the Balearics, and by double digits in the Canaries, suggesting that growth might be pettering out in some key coastal markets popular with foreign investors. There were 40,305 Spanish home sales inscribed in the Land Register in June, and 43,608 if you include subsidised homes (known as VPO), all according to the latest figures from the INE, based on source data from the Spanish Land Registrars’ Association. These were sales recorded in the Register, not sales that took place in the month. For actual sales in June the figures from the Spanish Notaries’ Association are more timely, and show sales rising just 0.2% to 54,164 including VPO. Both sources show the Spanish property market continuing to expand, albeit at a smaller rate than before.

New and resale Spanish home transactions in June 2018 New home sales inscribed in June were down 11% to 7,041, and resales down 1% to 36,567, according to the INE and including VPO. The new home sales decline was the biggest since April 21017, but might reflect the scarcity of new homes ready for delivery, rather than a fall in demand. Off-plan sales are not recorded in these figures, but are likely to have grown significantly in June.

Spanish Home Sales by Region – June 2018 June sales in areas popular with foreign investors were a mixed picture, with significant growth in some areas whilst year-on-year sales declined in other areas. Sales declined the most in the Balearics (-18%) and the Canaries (-13%), with the market also going soft in the Andalusian provinces of Almeria (-7%) and Malaga, home to the Costa del Sol (-2%). Sales finally turned slightly positive for Catalonia as a whole (+2%) though Barcelona and Girona were still shrinking.

Year-to-date (first six months), the picture is still one of growth in all areas popular with foreign buyers with the exception of the Balearics, where sales are 4% lower than the same period last year.
