COUNTERFEITING RAID

TOURISTS WARNED OVER FALSE EURO NOTES

H

OLIDAYMAKERS heading for the Canary Islands, particularly Tenerife, have been put on the alert against false euros after police smashed the most active counterfeiting gang in Spain. They say the network was churning out so many false notes on a daily basis that they are believed to have made at least 7,500 euros profit each month. Four people have been arrested in Tenerife, all of them Italians, after raids were made in the main tourist area in the south of the island. Police believe many of the false notes will still be circulating and have warned tourists to check any ten euro or 20 euros for their authenticity. The counterfeits are likely to

have reached the other Canary islands, including Lanzarote and Gran Canaria as well as further abroad in several European countries. “Despite manufacturing them by hand on a clandestine printing press, the notes are of high quality,” said a spokesman for the Spanish police. So far, 15,500 euros worth of false notes have been seized. The gang is believed to have started by making ten euro notes and then progressed to 20 euro ones, working from Monday to Friday like an

ordinary job. Equipment was found ready to make another batch of false notes amounting to 20,000 euros. Police have confirmed Tenerife is the most affected island, with the printing press having been found in an apartment in the south of the island, understood to be in El Fraile. The false bills were introduced into the system when purchases were made in local shops, buying products with the counterfeit notes or getting legitimate change. It is suspected they made a profit each month of at least 7,500 euros. Police say it is very hard to tell from a simple glance if a euro note is false or not.

National Police advise the “touch, look and turn” method. Genuine notes have a particular feel with a firm texture but feeling rough and thick. The watermark can be seen when observing the bill against the light. When you place a bill on a dark surface, the light areas darken. “In the holographic band and patch you can see a dotted line that makes up the € symbol, as well as the value of the ticket in figures of small size. The security thread is embedded in the paper of the bill. When you look at the bill against the light, the thread appears as a dark band in which you can see the word “EURO” and the value of the bill in small print,” said the spokesman. “ When a euro bill is rotated, the image of the hologram changes, alternating between its value and the repre-sentation of a door or window. As a background you can see concentric multicoloured circles with microtexts that go from the centre to the edges of the patch. Likewise, the image of the hologram changes, when the ticket is rotated, alternating between its value and the € symbol on a multicoloured background. In addition, the figure that indicates its value on the reverse changes colour, going from purple to olive green or brown.”

PRING has arrived and Santa Cruz is blooming.

The capital is undertaking a campaign of plantation in its five districts prior to the founding festivities of the city. In all, 50,400 flowers are being planted in its gardens. Councillor of Public Services, Dámaso Arteaga, said: “The planting will be developed during the remainder of March and until the end of April in the gardens of the five districts and, especially, in those that make up the area of great tourist influx of Santa Cruz.” The flowers include 19,400 specimens of petunias, 6,900 begonias and 3,300 geraniums,. The historic lighthouse, Faro Cumplida on La Palma has been in operation for 152 years and continues with its nautical functions, even though paying guests can now stay in the converted accommodation below. If they walk up 158 stairs to the top of the 111ft tower, they can enjoy incredible views over the Atlantic as the lighthouse beam shines more than 26 miles in front of them. It was the first lighthouse in Spain to use an LED lens. Although visitors can’t work the mechanism, they can still feel like a lighthouse keeper and understand the functions and history of the lighthouse. The real lighthouse keeper comes in every fortnight to check the technology. The project has taken three years to come to fruition and is the brainchild of Berlinbased Floatel GmbH, founded by Tim Wittenbecher and Marc Nagel, which operates several other hideaways in spectacular places. One of their most recent innovations is the floating harbour crane in Hamburg.

The La Palma lighthouse offers three luxury suites, all with fantastic views over the Atlantic, and can accommodate eight guests in total. It is even possible to hire out the entire lighthouse in July or August for 950 euros a day. There’s an infinity pool, a 5,000 square metre garden, private terraces and at the top, a Sky High Mini Bar, which offers a glass of wine as a reward for climbing up so high. The lighthouse, described by Floatel as “possibly the most romantic in Spain”, is steeped in history. During World War Two on October 28th, 1942, a German submarine U509 sunk the British battle ship Pacific Star near La Palma island. After three days, the survivors spotted the light of Faro Punta Cumplida and reached the coast of Barlovento, where the people of the town took the 97

sailors into their homes to save their lives. Floatel is aiming to open

other hideaways throughout Europe over the next ten years, including more lighthouses.

Mini tornado hits the south

Pilots were put on the alert by air traffic controllers who blamed the phenomenon on torrential rain in Spain The tornado, which was visible across the south of the island, hit Palm Mar, about five miles from the main airport. Air traffic controllers confirmed on their Twitter site that several other aircraft were told to divert until the tornado had burnt itself out. “Small tornado interfering in track approach 07 for a few minutes. Arona’s updated General Plan will shape the municipality for the future Arona’s new General Plan is taking shape with the first technical meetings.

STREET IMPROVEMENTS

T

T

HE Mayor, José Julián Mena, together with the councillors of the areas of urbanism, Luis García, and environment, works and infrastructure, José Luis Gómez, held a working meeting with the drafting team of the new General Plan which will determine the bases of Arona’s development for the coming years. It will completely review the existing one, which is more than 25 years old, a time in which the population and activity of the municipality has more than doubled. The meeting took place in the Cultural Centre of Los Cristianos. This vitally important document for Arona will lay the foundations of development and modernisation for the coming years and will solve important urbanistic problems that the municipality has suffered for decades. “The current planning of Arona goes back to the year 1992,” said a council spokes-

man. “Its antiquity and lack of foresight on the great growth experienced since then by the municipality has generated serious distortions, such as the lack of land for different uses, urbanisations consolidated in areas not considered urban and those that have not been able to provide services for decades or the lack of legal security that has affected residents and potential investors.” José Julián Mena explained that “the new General Plan is the first of Arona in the 21st century and with a population that exceeds 100,000 inhabitants. A municipality that has

advanced in the last four years but has inherited important problems that cannot be corrected without this tool, which is fundamental. We have started the first working meetings, which will be followed by a transparent and participatory process, in which residents will be consulted about their priorities and what the Arona is like for the next years.” Luis Garcia stressed that “it is vital to establish the general framework of planning to

determine the future development of our municipality, since, from these first meetings, we will obtain the proposal of structural management of Arona”. “It is essential,” he added, “to determine which tourism model we want, what infrastructure and supplies we need to meet the needs of public services for the population, how we will diversify the economic sectors or how we will improve the mobility of our municipality.”

These actions, which are part of the Insular Development Strategic Framework (MEDI) FDCAN, will be carried out on Blanco Street and around Valois, Plaza del Charco and Santo Domingo streets. The Governing Council agreed to take out the tender for the renovation of Calle Blanco for the sum of 596,189 euros. The works, which will have a term of execution of five months, include the remodelling of the stretch of the street between Valois / Cupido and Plaza del Charco. This project, whose financing is assumed by the Cabildo and Puerto council through the Strategy Agreement together with the Autonomous Govern-

ment through the Canary Islands Plan, forms part of a proposal of greater scope that includes the streets Dr. Ingram, Nieves Ravelo and Blanco. In addition, the Council approved the project to analyse and define the necessary actions that will improve the drainage of rainwater throughout the historic centre of the tourist city, which also includes the execution of a new collection point for the flow at the pier. The planned investment for the realisation of these works, which will be undertaken mainly in Valois Street, Plaza del Charco and Santo Domingo, amounts to 497,159 euros financed entirely by the Cabildo.

A 65-year-old man now faces prosecution for smuggling and contravening the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites). The investigation began after police received a complaint relating to a finca located in Aldea Blanca. At the scene, police officers from the environmental protection branch, Seprona found a loggerhead turtle (Caretta Caretta), a loggerhead turtle shell (Caretta Caretta), a green turtle shell (Chelonia Mydas), a naturalised seahorse (Hippocampus), five corals of large dimensions (subclass Octocorallia and Hexacorallia), several coral pieces of different species, an indeterminate number of marine animal remains, crustacean exoskeletons, and several sharks’ teeth. Several pieces of wood allegedly coming from the African continent and South America are also being tested. All the infractions committed affect Royal Decree 11628/2011, of November 14, which regulates the list and Spanish catalogue of invasive alien species; to the Contraband Law; Regulation EC 338/19 997 of the Wildlife Council, as well as the Cites Convention itself.

WALKING APPEAL

Tourists flocking to San Juan de la Rambla

S

AN Juan de la Rambla is becoming the latest “buzz” place for tourists to visit, especially those interested in walking.

The local council’s tourism department, led by councillor Cayetano Sïlva, has reported a significant increase in visitors over the last few months, as much as 50 per cent compared to the same period in 2018. “This is a direct response to the tourism strategy that we started with the twopronged project “San Juan de la Rambla: Life Experience” which focuses on the surroundings of the Barranco Ruiz, and the historic offer, using the historic centre as the pivot point.” Much of the increase is being attributed to the word of mouth effect coupled with the work carried out with tourism offices across the island, hotels and specialised guides for keen ramblers. San Juan de la Rambla council says the area offers a different kind of landscape across a number of approved trails such as the Fuente del Bardo - Fuente del Rey, the Barranco Ruiz which joins La Vera with La Rambla descending through the back of the ravine or the jewel in the crown, the path that joins La Rambla with Las Aguas, which receives an average of 100 visitors daily. The next step on which the Department of Tourism is working is the implementation of the socalled “Routes of experiences” to discover more of the hidden charms of the municipality.

AMPUTEE STRANGLED

Police investigate gruesome murder of homeless man

P

OLICE have been investigating the violent death of a wheelchair-bound homeless man who was strangled and then set on fire.

At one stage, a 43-year-old Spaniard and an Irish woman, aged 50, were arrested in Gran Canaria where all three lived. The Spanish man, originally from Turkey, was remanded in custody whilst the Irish woman was released. An update on the status of this case has not yet been given. The dead man, 61 and Romanian, had been confined to a wheelchair after both legs were amputated and was living rough in an abandoned precinct in Playa del Inglés in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. He was found strangled

there on January 11th, with his body having been sprayed afterwards with some sort of accelerant. Police say he was wellknown in the area as he frequently approached tourists to beg for money and alcohol. He was always surrounded by dirt, food and debris and lived in filthy conditions, often using the street as a toilet. Police searched the home of the two people who were originally arrested and several items of clothing which they are alleged to have worn on January 11th taken away.

The wheelchair-bound victim was well known in San Bartolomé de Tirajana and according to press reports, had previously committed “anti-social acts”. He came originally from Timisoara, bordering Hungar y and Serbia Police say they have been working hard over the last two months to piece together evidence and gather witness accounts and possible CCTV footage. Some of the evidence was destroyed by the fire. Forensic experts believe the accelerator used was alcohol. An extinguisher was also used to put out the fire which has further complicated matters.

ROBBERY ATTEMPT

Police chase through Adeje

T

HERE was a dramatic midnight police chase through Adeje following an attempted robbery.

A resident of Tijoco Alto raised the alarm when he saw several individuals attempting to break into his house. When they realised they had been spotted, they made their escape in a Seat Ibiza but were detected by police. The car failed to stop and was driven away at speed towards the coast. The police chase continued along bendy roads through farmland and then on to the TF-47 (Armeñime-Puerto de Santiago). It was here that officers lost sight of the car.

Jilted boyfriend causes full-scale terrorist alert

A

PINEAPPLE SPELL!

man who placed a “love spell” pineapple in the middle of a train track in a bid to win back his girlfriend prompted a full-scale terrorist alert in Spain! The besotted boyfriend caused mayhem in Alicante and held up commuters for more than two hours before police gave the all-clear. Witnesses raised the alert after seeing two men “with Arabic features” putting a black package on the train line at a busy intersection in the city. The suspicious package triggered the terrorist attack protocol and caused the rail traffic to be cut off for two hours, causing delays of 149 minutes on a long-distance train and seven local services, with a total of 135 affected passengers. The police bomb disposal team was called in and eventually determined it was a false alarm as the bag contained the fresh pineapple, scooped out and with a socalled love spell inside. This consisted of nails, pins, coffee

beans, grapes, two notes and seeds of a red and black colour! “The red and black seeds come from the plant ‘Abrus pecatorius’, better known as American liquorice, and contains the substance abrina, a toxalbumin considered “very toxic”, which is why it is prohibited,” said a police spokesman. “Despite this, these seeds have traditionally been used in esoteric environments, where it is known under the name of ‘peony ’. In addition, the pineapple also contained two pieces of paper: one with the name of the former girlfriend

and the second with the drawing of a skull and other names.” When arrested by the police, the 38-year-old Spaniard said it was a “love spell” to try and win back his ex-partner because she had left him recently. He said he was fond of the occult and had searched on the internet how to make a love spell, choosing the pineapple idea. The man has since appeared in court for public disorder. Needless to say, the love spell didn’t work as his former partner was also granted a restraining order!

AIRPORT WORK

La Laguna residents concerned over air quality

L

A Laguna has asked the Government of the Canary Islands to install an air quality control and monitoring unit in the vicinity of Tenerife North Airport - La Laguna city. The authority wants to ensure adherence to environmental laws due to the concern being generated among the residents of San Lazaro and Camino La Villa over the installation of an asphalt plant at the airport. Mayor of the municipality, José Alberto Díaz and urban planning councillor, Candelaria Díaz met with several residents of these areas in order to collect the demands and concerns about the installation and its current operation. After listening to their fears on this situation, both the mayor and the council asked the regional executive to install a control station for air

quality, which the Canary Islands agreed quickly to install. Candelaria Díaz wanted to publicly thank the Executive for its speed in dealing with the municipal proposal and the neighbourhood demand. Similarly, both the mayor and councillor committed to continue mediating with the Government of the Canary Islands and other relevant institutions, such as AENA, so that they continue to comply with environmental laws as long as the work lasts. Completion is scheduled for the month of May but hopefully sooner as the council intends to put pressure on the airport authority.

However, the council has stressed it has no competence in this matter, and noted that, according to current legislation, the works executed by AENA of new construction, repair and conservation carried out in the field of the airport and its service area will not be subject to municipal preventive control actions.

Knife-point New lights for old in Los Cristianos threat to bar A worker

T

HE National Police have arrested a 34-yearold man, with a police record, for robbery with violence or intimidation in La Laguna, two of robbery and another of threats committed in Santa Cruz.

The events that led to his initial arrest occurred in a bar in La Laguna. A staff member was opening up when he was approached by a person with his face covered, almost completely, with a black stocking. Suddenly, this person took out a knife that was hidden and intimidated the employee demanding he handed over the cash register. The victim grabbed an object to defend himself, afraid that he would be attacked with the knife with which he was being intimidated. The would-be thief then ran away. Police later arrested the suspect in Santa Cruz where he had also approached people who were withdrawing money from an ATM, pushing them to the floor and stealing the cash.

RONA council is continuing with the process of replacing the old lighting fixtures of the municipality, which has allowed, among other measures, to reduce the electricity consumption by the public services of the corporation, equivalent to almost 50 tons of oil in the last three years.

The last of these actions, which has been developed in the gardens next to the preferred bus stop of Los Cristianos, has consisted of the replacement of the old points of light and the installation of new ones. In total, 21 lights have been replaced and another 30 new ones have been installed, with an increase in consumption of just 145 watts, thanks to the use of low consumption LED technology. The deputy mayor and councillor of the environment, José Luis Gómez, explained that “in these almost four years of mandate, we have been replacing public lighting in all the localities of Arona with new, more efficient ones and of lower consumption. These works, as small as they may seem, are very important to improve the quality of life of citizens, especially in school or sports environments that did not have lighting and now have it and through which hundreds of children and children pass daily.”

FURTHER DEMOLITION

Work continues to free up coastal area of Los Cristianos

TOURISM ATTRACTION

A

RONA continues with the process of progressive recovery of public space on the coast of Los Cristianos, specifically in the area of Los Tarajales. A few months ago, the council completely regenerated the so-called Chalet de los Peña and undertook the demolition of the Casa de los Soprani. In the coming weeks, it will proceed to the demolition of the Casa de los Bethencourt. This property was becoming a health hazard and was denounced by residents and businesses of the area. It also prevented access to the sea. “All this in an area of great potential in which the works of the first phase of the renovation of the promenade are being executed and which will become a great public recreational space of high level,” said a council spokesman. The intention of the Town Hall of Arona is to recover the whole of the public space of the coast of the municipality. In Los Cristianos, this involves the complete modernisation of the Los Tarajales promenade, the recovery of the beach that was once in that

location and the generation of new services in places such as the Chalet de los Peña itself, so that it takes full advantage of the potential offered by the place for both residents and visitors. The demolition of the Casa los Bethencourt will not only free the public space of the coast but will allow the reform of the park that is annexed in the upper area and create a direct access to the sea. The Mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena stressed that “the recovery of the public space of the coast in this area of Los Cristianos is a process that is already underway, with the reform of the Paseo de Los Tarajales, the regeneration of the Chalet de los Peña, the demolition of the Casa de los Bethencourt. and the Casa de los Soprani and other measures that will be taken to recover one of the most valuable places and with the greatest potential of Los Cristianos.” “Not only are we working

in Los Cristianos,” he added, “but a similar process will be carried out in Las Galletas, where steps are already being taken to fully reform the promenade and the recovery of the great beach.” Councillor for the environment, José Luis Gómez, explained that “this area of Los Cristianos, despite its enormous potential, has been abandoned for many years, hence the different actions that have been carried out and we will continue to recover it in an integral way and offer an attractive and modern space.” Councilman Leopoldo Díaz Oda, has ensured that “with this work Los Cristianos recovers a more public space in one of the areas that have

traditionally been more abandoned, despite the importance it has and can have in the coming years for the town with the creation of a large public recreational and high level.”

DISTRACTION TECHNIQUE

“Hugger” steals tourist’s necklace

A

“travelling” thief has been arrested in Santa Cruz for stealing a necklace from an elderly tourist.

The man, aged 26 and with a police record, used the “hugging” technique which distracts targets who thinks the person asking a question or for directions is just being friendly. What they are really doing, however, is to pickpocket their victim. On this occasion the theft happened in Maspalomas in Gran Canaria when the 85-yearold tourist had a gold pendant of great value removed from her neck without her knowing. Fortunately, she was able to give police such a good description that the man was arrested when he arrived in Tenerife on board a ferry.

Las Galletas to host underwater video and photography championship

A

RONA will host the main international event of underwater video and photography in September.

During a travel event in Barcelona, the local council presented details of the XVII World Championship of Video and Underwater Photography, which will take place in Las Galletas from September 17th to 22nd, in the hands of the Spanish Federation of Underwater Activities, all within the framework of the new tourism strategy of the municipality, which involves putting both the sustainability and its natural resources into value. It is hoped to attract 35 teams from several countries to the Marina del Sur. The organisation has proposed several immersion points on the coast of Arona for this competition, such as Las Rosas (La Atlántida), Montaña Amarilla - Las Galletas and Los Obispos (El Bufadero). In photography, the competitors will compete in the categories of Fish, Close Up, Thematic, Wide Angle without Diver and Wide Angle with Diver, applying the general regulation of underwater

photography CMAS (World Championship Version 2018.1). Arona’s tourism councillor, David Pérez said: “In Tenerife most of the tourism that comes to practice diving is concentrated in the south of the island and more specifically to our town, with about 20,000 divers who every year enjoy the magnificent points of immersion of the coasts of Arona. That is why we are grateful to the Spanish Federation for choosing us as the venue for this important international event, which fits perfectly into our strategy of valuing the precious natural resources we have.” Eduard Centelles Alonaso, President of the Spanish Federation of Underwater Activities. “With this championship we do not just want to compete in sports. Our objectives are also to promote tourism, giving visualisation to the areas for the practice of diving and, thanks to the images obtained, to sensitise the population about the need to protect our natural heritage.”

Four arrested for “monopolising drug sales in south Tenerife”

F

OUR people have been arrested for selling hashish and cocaine in several towns in the south of Tenerife.

The three men and one woman, of Spanish, Colombian and Uruguayan nationality, all long-term residents on the island, were said to have monopolised the sale of narcotic drugs in the area, especially in El Médano. The investigation began in mid-2018, when the Civil Guard received information related to an organised group dedicated to the sale of hashish and cocaine in several buildings. Thanks to the surveillance, it was found that the members of the gang had spread their net further to other areas in the south. “They had a high standard of living, frequenting the reserved

areas of well-known leisure establishments, even though none of them had a known economic activity,” said a police spokesman. The agents confirmed that the people investigated received visits from consumers in their homes throughout the day. If they were planning to be away for a few days, they would leave a third party in charge of the cocaine and hashish sales. During raids, police seized 12,000 euros in cash, almost 400 grams of cocaine, 1,740 grams of hashish, a kilo of cut product, utensils for distribution of the drug, simulated firearms and four vehicles, some of them high-end.

S Easter draws near it’s easy to forget that the days leading up to the festival are the holiest in the Christian calendar. It all begins a week before Easter Day with Palm Sunday, the day when we remember Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey and being greeted as a king. On that day people waved palm branches in front of him in greeting and put their cloaks on the road for the animal to walk on.

Palm Sunday is rich in meaning. Nowadays most churches distribute palm crosses to their congregations – simple crosses made out of palm leaves, now often imported from countries in the developing world. Some churches take the opportunity for an outdoor procession, complete with donkey. The donkey is itself an important symbol. Jesus didn’t enter Jerusalem on an impressive horse, which is what an earthly, conquering king might have done. Riding on a donkey was a sign of his coming in peace. When I was a curate in Oxford, several of the city centre churches were anxious to procure a donkey for their Palm Sunday processions. Unfortunately in that part of the world donkeys are in short supply and the nearest donkey sanctuary was around 20 miles away. Nonetheless, I was confident (as curates tend to be) that I had sourced a donkey, only to find, just before the big day, that a neighbouring vicar had snaffled it. It was with a certain sense of Schadenfreude that we woke up on Palm Sunday morning to heavy rain. And the sanctuary was not prepared to take the risk of its donkey’s feet slipping on the city streets. In my last parish things seemed more promising, as there was a field with two donkeys right next to the church. Unfortunately one refused to come without the other and they were in any case too wayward to take part in any kind of procession. Nonetheless it was always good to see them in their field, not least because both of them had the distinctive markings of a cross on their back, which folklore attributes to the story of Palm Sunday when Jesus came on a donkey to the city where he would be crucified. That Palm Sunday donkey has always captured people’s imaginations, not least that of GK Chesterton, whose poem “The Donkey” describes the beast as “the devil’s walking parody on all four-footed things”. That poem ends with the wonderful verse: “Fools! For I also had my hour; One far fierce hour and sweet: There was a shout about my ears, And palms before my feet.” We can’t offer you a donkey at All Saints. But if you would like to come to our morning services on 14 April, you can most certainly have a palm cross. Our services: Holy Communion on Sundays at 9.30 am and 11.00 am and on Wednesdays at 10.00 am. Taizé worship on alternate Thursdays at 5.30 pm: next service 11 April. pylons in nature reserve painted red

Not a typical day at K9 Fury in Lanzarote as

few months ago, in November, it was a typical day at K9. The kennels had been cleaned, our dogs were fed and walked and they were starting to settle for the night. The front gate then opened, and this young couple came in with a small dog.

She was introduced to me as Scrappy. She automatically tugged at my heart strings. Due to personal circumstances, this young couple had to surrender Scrappy to K9, and there was tears all around when the realisation hit that they were leaving her. It was a very tough decision for them. When they left, we settled Scrappy into one of our kennels and of course this little girl was very confused and a bit fearful. She was defensive and barked and growled at first. She had no idea why she was suddenly left at K9. The next day, one of our volunteers took her for a walk and her personality began to shine brightly. Scrappy is a terrier mix and is 10 years old. She currently shares a kennel with 3 other dogs who are all a lot younger than her. Although she is 10, she still runs and acts like a young dog and has so much love and affection for us all at K9. She is still a bit weary of new people and needs people to take their time with her, but once she knows you, the love she gives you, is priceless. She is a joy to walk on and off lead, as she stays right by your side and is always waiting for a chance to be cuddled and made a fuss of. The younger dogs she shares with at the moment are all very sweet, but their excitement and energy can sometimes push Scrappy to the side, as it can be a bit too much for her. She is looking for her forever home and she would make the perfect companion. She is a little bit fearful of children so ideally a child free house would suit her best. Give Scrappy a chance and we can promise you will not be disappointed. Her cuddles fill you with so much joy and if you take the time to get to know her, she will be your best and forever friend! Come and meet this little beauty at K9. She needs her forever home.

Queenie is looking for a home

UEENIE is a very affectionate girl. She loves humans and all human contact, which unfortunately she lacks at the refuge with so many other dogs competing for attention.

She is around 5 years old and would be a lovely companion for somebody. If you would like to adopt Queenie you can visit her at the refuge. The Centro de Proteccion Animal de Tierra Blanca is located off the TF1 motorway, about half way between Las Americas and Santa Cruz, by the restaurant Los Chasneros, just 200m above the motorway. They do not ask for adoption fees, only a donation of food and photos to let them know how the dog is getting on in his/ her new home. Call Rachel on 629 031 273.

ANZAROTE’S Cabildo has erupted in fury after the electricity board decided to paint pylons red and white in the middle of the worldrenowned nature reserve!

Island leaders are livid about the work which is only a stone’s throw from the sea and ten minutes from the airport where thousands of holidaymakers, including many Brits, arrive each week. The island’s government has slammed the colour scheme as “an environmental outrage” and is requesting an immediate freeze on the painting pending urgent talks. “Lanzarote lives on tourism and its landscape,” said president, Pedro San Ginés. “This action represents an enormous environmental impact in a territory that has been a Biosphere Reserve for more than two decades.” The painting has been undertaken by Red Eléctrica de España on the Arrecife-San Bartolomé road, one of the main routes to the busy airport. Lanzarote council says it is totally out of keeping for the island which was the first tourist destination in the world to gain a sustainable award from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. It is also part

of the World Geoparks Network. The island’s president says he is seeking an urgent meeting with Red Eléctrica de España and wants no further painting to take place until then. Other turrets on the island have also been painted in the same colour scheme in recent months and it is feared there could be more to come,

possibly elsewhere in the Canaries. Local residents are sharing the concern, with one commenting: “What a way to destroy the image of an island in less than one year with so many signs, new turrets over 50 metres and more elements on the roads. What a pity.” A comment has been requested from Red Eléctrica de España.

Huge progress with lowering TB rates T

HE rate of tuberculosis in the Canary Islands is six cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the second lowest in Spain.

It was historically an endemic disease in the Canary Islands, whose incidence has been gradually decreasing since 2000, when it was 23.4 cases. Figures were released by health chiefs on the occasion of the celebration of World TB Day, celebrated every year on March 24 because it was on this date that Dr. Robert Koch detected the tubercle bacillus in 1882. This was the first step towards diagnosis and cure of the disease. Tuberculosis has historically been an endemic disease in the Canary Islands with a presence in all the islands. The evolution registered since 2000, in which a rate of 23.43 cases per 100,000 inhabitants was determined, has been very good, with rates progressively decreasing until reaching the last of 6.02 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 2017, one of the lowest in Spanish territory. By age groups, it is observed that the group of 65 and over is the one with the highest rate of involvement in both men and both sexes as a whole.

FOUR THEMES

Health chiefs set out targets for the next five years

A

major new document which sets out health priorities for the Canary Islands over the next five years has gone out to public consultation.

Health Minister, José Manuel Baltar said comments would be invited from April on the draft Health Plan of the Canary Islands 2019-2024. The consultation will end in June. “Once this period is closed, the actions will be updated, the costs involved in carr ying them out will be estimated and the definitive version of the Draft Health Plan of the Canary Islands 2019-2024 will be finalised for processing by the new Government and, subsequently, its consideration in the Parliament of the Canary Islands,” said Sr. Baltar. The plan revolves around four themes. They are: *Prevention, promotion and protection of health. Includes the approach of habits and lifestyles for the improvement in overweight and obesity, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, toxic consumption; the prevention of sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies; the improvement or maintenance of vaccination rates; and the strengthening of environmental health and food security. * Improvement in health services and results. Addresses the main causes of morbidity and mortality in the Canary Islands (cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, COPD, mental health), as well as patient safety. *Chronicity and healthy aging. It deals with the prevention of frailty and its clinical management, the coordination of the different resources of the SCS, the support in the home for patients, relatives and carers, the approach to Alzheimer’s and other dementias, as well as the safe use of medications *Intra-sectoral and inter-sectoral coordination. The plan will try to better integrate the services offered by the SCS and is a strong commitment to intersectoral coordination at all levels where possible.

Employment fraud discovered in Las Pamas MIAMI FLIGHT

A

GENTS of the National Police have uncovered a social security and employment fraud involving a loss of 362,738.95 euros to the treas-

ury.

The operation, called “Trafalgar”, was carried out mainly in Asturias but also in the provinces of Alicante, Barcelona, Cáceres, Lugo, Madrid, Las Palmas and Valencia. The police investigations uncovered a series of crimes of fraud of contributions and benefits and of falsification of documents, 21 people being imputed. It was also possible to recover the amount of 84,559.05 euros. The main author of these illegal acts was arrested in Oviedo hours before taking a

flight to Miami, where he planned to live. A number of companies were found to be fictitious and could not provide invoices or give details of any customers or suppliers since the end of 2012. Their alleged workers obtained various benefits illegally, such as residence permits and unemployment. Two cases were detected in Las Palmas when women falsely obtained a community family residency card in favour of their “partners” and therefore obtain benefits.

Woman in sexual exploitation gang recruited her own daughter LANZAROTE NETWORK

N

ATIONAL Police have dismantled a criminal network dedicated to the sexual exploitation of Nigerian women in Lanzarote.

Three people were arrested, including a woman who participated in the process of capturing her own daughter. Two victims were released. The investigation began after a woman managed to contact the police. She said she had been forced to work as a prostitute on public roads in order to pay a debt that had been imposed on her for bringing her to Spain from Nigeria, which amounted to 20,000 euros. Women captured by the gang, often poor, were given a false promise of a better life in Europe, and forced to pay a debt imposed and not report anything to the police. After the capture phase, they were provided with fraudulent documentation. One of the victims explained that they tried to transfer them by air with a passport and a visa issued by the Greek authorities on behalf of a third person. In the border control of the Adolfo Suรกrez-Madrid Barajas Airport, the falsification of the document was detected and she returned to Nigeria. For this reason, she was transferred again by land from that country to Libya, to then try to cross from the African continent to Europe in a zodiactype vessel. On this occasion,

it was intercepted by Italian coastguards and she was taken to an immigrant centre where the gang later contacted her again to redirect her by air with documentation from another person to the island of Lanzarote, where she was finally sexually exploited. In the operation carried out in Spain, two raids were carried out in private homes, achieving the arrest of three people. The investigators have intervened diverse documentation related to the researched activities, such as accounts of the benefits generated by the women who exercised prostitution, as well as passports and permits. This operation is part of the National Police Plan against Trafficking in Human Beings for the Purpose of Sexual Exploitation, launched in 2013, and which led to the creation of the Central Brigade against Trafficking in Human Beings, attached to the Commissariat General of Immigration and Borders of the National Police. With the implementation of this plan, the National Police activated the telephone line 900 10 50 90 and the mail trata@policia.es to facilitate citizen collaboration and the report, anonymous and confidential, of this type of crime.

La Palma Transvulcania aims for sustainability

T

HE Transvulcania Naviera Armas race on La Palma on May 11th is aspiring to be an international sustainable event.

The challenge maintains the course set in its 2018 roadmap towards its conversion into the only trail running event in the Canary Islands and of the few in Spain, which has the ISO Sustainable Event Certification. Its objectives are to reduce the consumption of materials and pollution, as happened in 2018, thanks to the reduction in the consumption of plastic materials betting on compostable and biodegradable materials such as glasses made of recycled cellulose and a derivative of corn starch, sugar cane or covered with cr ystallized corn starch, substitution of the usual material in advertising media, tarpaulins, beacon tapes, etc., which have been changed by biodegradable materials and inks, among other actions. Another action is the reuse of materials such as, for example, polyethylene tarpaulins from previous editions that have been used to make custom bags and equipment

through the work of the Isonorte Foundation. In this way, a double function is fulfilled since in addition to environmental care, the test maintains its commitment to the social and labour insertion of people in social exclusion or at risk of suffering it. In addition, all supplies, outlets and goals, will have a selective separation containers so that all participants,

public and volunteers can deposit the waste separately. At the same time, these wastes will be collected and transported selectively to the complex for later recovery and recycling within a collection system designed in collaboration with the La Palma Consortium of Services and the different town halls. NEW MINISTRY?

HOUSANDS of elderly people in need are living in the Canary Islands without receiving any financial aid, a new report has revealed.

The archipelago is the second autonomous community with the highest proportion of dependents who do not receive any benefit, with 29.27 per cent. This is only exceeded by Catalonia, with 32.64%, according to the report prepared by the Business Circle of Attention to People, CEAPs. The study highlights the disparate situation of aid to dependent people in each community and denounces that the differences between autonomies in the application of the Law of Dependency “are becoming worse”. The report, entitled “The chaos of dependency”, shows the divergences in GDP spending in this sector, ranging from 1% in Cantabria to 0.33% in the Balearic Islands, with a Spanish average of 0.54% , far

from the European 2 per cent. Cantabria is also the community that spends more by dependent, 8,645 euros, followed by the Basque Country (8,458 euros), while Andalusia and Murcia are in the bottom of the list, with 5,324 euros and 5,731 euros respectively. According to the report, Andalusia and Murcia would be the best communities to be recognised as a dependent, with more than double the chances of obtaining this recognition in the Valencian Community or the Canary Islands. bales were found abandoned on the beach located southeast of the town of JoalFadiouth but no people were detected. The agents landed in the vicinity to check the contents of the bales, which were wrapped in several layers of plastic similar to those used in packing suitcases. Inside was a species of dry grass that turned out to be marijuana. On August 24th, 2006, a memorandum of collaboration was signed between the governments of Spain and Senegal for the implementation of joint patrols within the framework of the fight against clandestine emigration by sea through the FRONTEX

programme. In view of the positive results obtained and the need to continue to maintain the achievements, this collaboration has been extended annually and thanks to this has contributed significantly to reduce irregular migration flows between the coasts of West Africa and the countries of the European Union. The close collaboration between the two countries has expanded to include not only the area of irregular migration, but also humanitarian assistance, the fight against trafficking in narcotic drugs, smuggling, tax crimes, environmental pollution, illegal fishing, among others. .

Security to Mercadona to replace be stepped all plastic bags in up on famous rolling programme Camino

T

HE Civil Guard and the Association of Municipalities of the Camino de Santiago have signed an operational protocol to improve security on the Camino de Santiago. The deputy operating director, Lieutenant General Laurentino Ceña, and the president of the Association and Mayor of León, Antonio Silván, have been in charge of initialling the agreement. The protocol aims to achieve higher levels of safety and protection in the Camino. In addition, it aims to provide the shelters with greater control tools without diminishing the essence and uniqueness of the shelter and accommodation system. “We want to ensure the promotion of common actions and initiatives to increase prevention, awareness and effectiveness of the fight against illicit activities, developed in the field of citizen security and

integrity in the Camino de Santiago Francés, its accommodations, natural and cultural heritage, and especially rural environment,” said a spokesman. The president of the AMCS, Antonio Silván, has given the Civil Guard a distinction in recognition of their work on the Camino de Santiago on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of its foundation. Silván has donated to the Civil Guard an original engraving of 1715 that describes a procession of pilgrims in the Plaza del Obradoiro in Santiago de Compostela, in gratitude for their protection and assistance of the pilgrims.

S

UPERMARKET chain Mercadona will culminate in April the definitive replacement in all its stores of the current plastic bags by other paper, raffia and reusable and recyclable bags that are also made with 3,000 tons of plastic from the packaging recovered in their stores. The objective is to implement this measure, which began in 2018 in 66 stores located in València, Bizkaia, Barcelona, Cantabria, Illes Balears, Ceuta and Melilla, to the rest of the chain in a progressive manner. The expansion began in February in Catalonia, Madrid and Navarra and will be expanded to reach more than 1,600 stores in the middle of next April.

With this measure, you can choose to make your daily purchase between the traditional 50-cent raffia basket, a 10-cent paper bag, and a reusable and recyclable bag with a recycled plastic content between 50% and 70%, also 10 cents. In addition, the company has installed a new piece of equipment in the fresh sections, a dispensing system that reduces the waste of the same.

The replacement mechanism is easier and more intuitive than the previous one, facilitating this task to the worker of the section. Also, it is expected that these bags will be replaced by others of compostable material before 2021. “In this way, Mercadona reinforces its commitment to sustainability, a commitment that led it in 2011 to be the first company in its sector to introduce initiatives to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags, and one year earlier, in 2010, to become a pioneer in plastic recycling with projects such as the one tackled jointly with the SPOTer supplier

SPBerner to incorporate a new line of household goods (buckets, basins, broomsticks and mops), made with the plastic recovered from the greenhouses,” a spokesman explained. In addition, Mercadona collaborates with more than 170 soup kitchens and 60 food banks and other social entities throughout Spain, to which it donates daily food, and participates in food collection campaigns. It also works with more than 28 foundations and occupational centres in the decoration of its stores with murals, made by more than 1,000 people with intellectual disabilities.

COMPLEX TECHNOLOGY

International raids bust Spanish-led illicit TV structure

POLICE CAMPAIGN

N

ATIONAL Police have led an investigation team made up of police forces from Spain, the United Kingdom and Denmark, as well as Europol, directed against the distribution of illicit signals through IPTV.

As a result, the largest operation carried out to date against this crime has been carried out at European level and a very complex international technological infrastructure composed of eleven “farms” of servers distributed all over the world has been ended, some of them with more than 44 servers. The investigation began in late 2015, following a complaint filed by the Premier League for an alleged crime against intellectual property carried out by a website based in Malaga, offering IPTV subscriptions with access to a multitude of international conditional access channels. After the denunciation, the National Police agents verified the great extent of the illicit activity offering services to IPTV subscriptions that allowed access to the viewing of more than 800 television channels. The price of subscriptions varied not only by the type of subscription, but by the time of subscription to it and ranged from 40 euros per month to 460. The agents also noticed that the website reported had associated several profiles on social networks, promoting their services to obtain more customers. Despite the fact that the business owners were Spanish companies, payment of the subscriptions had to be made to a Gibraltarian company. As a result of the police investigations and the progress of the investigation, it was found there was a web structure coordinated by a specialised international criminal organisation with ramifications in Spain, Denmark, United Kingdom, Latvia, the Netherlands and Cyprus. The strategy used by the investigated was to use a multitude of servers and change them periodically, gradually creating new web pages to form a framework that, in principle, had no relationship. In this way they pretended not to be detected by the National Police and continue profiting from the crime. Subscribers have been identified in more than 30 countries. During the operation, 14 simultaneous registrations were made: eight in Spain (provinces of Malaga, Madrid and Alicante), four in Denmark and two in the United Kingdom.

Two pensioners turn out to be bank robbers!

ITALIAN JOB

WO bank robbers, aged 73 and 80, have been arrested in Spain after using public transport to make their escape!

The suspects, of South American origin, are believed to have carried out two raids in Barcelona, getting away with 32,000 and 45,000 euros. Two other people related to the operation have also been arrested, one man for a crime against public health and another who was caught next to one of the robbers when they were preparing to carry out a new assault in Madrid. The investigators located the homes of the assailants, one of them in Madrid and the other in El Vendrell (Tarragona). At the time of the arrest, they carried two revolvers, two motorcycle helmets, gloves, shackles, flanges and a fake badge with the caption “Special Police”, as well as Italian identity cards with false filiations. Moments before that intervention, the other robber was arrested at a home where they resided in the Madrid district of Vallecas.

Small percentage of vehicle occupants still not belting up

S

PAIN’S driving directorate is to intensify the surveillance of the use of the safety belt and child supports by all the occupants of the ve-

hicle.

The safety belt is the most effective passive safety element in vehicles and the one that has saved the most lives. According to the data of the ESRA project (Survey of Attitudes of Road Users), carried out in 38 countries, 80% of Spaniards confirm they have used the seatbelt as a driver during driving in the last year, 81% admit having used it as a passenger in the front seat of the car and 70% as a passenger in the rear seats of the car. This data show that although its use is mandatory for all vehicle occupants, there remains a small section of occupants reluctant to put it on. The aforementioned survey data are also reflected in the road accident figures. In 2017, 24% of the deceased aged 12 and over, users of passenger cars and vans, did not use a seatbelt and 35 of the 87 who died on urban roads. In relation to the wounded, nine per cent did not use a belt and in urban

areas that percentage increased to 18%, which shows that the use of this belt is lower in cities than in roads. For its part, the World Health Organisation also includes in its reports, the importance of the use of this device and calls for countries to include in their legislation, the mandator y use of seatbelts. Approximately 105 countries, representing 67% of the world population, have laws that require the use of this element of security by all occupants of a vehicle. As has already been done with speed, the control of seat belt use goes through automated surveillance, as a complement to the surveillance carried out by traffic agents on roads. The DGT continues advancing in technological developments of video analysis for the detection of the non-use of the belt as well as the use of the mobile at the wheel.

SPANISH ARREST

Brit accused Tourists in Mallorca and Ibiza to be encouraged to go natural! of 53 sex H offences spanning 44 years OLIDAYMAKERS in Mallorca and Ibiza are to be encouraged to get their kit off after campaigners won the first round in their battle to have all nudist beaches clearly signposted.

A

British fugitive accused of dozens of sex crimes spanning 44 years has been arrested in Spain.

Police say the man had taken refuge in Almeria in the south-east of the country but was discovered thanks to a joint operation between the Spanish national police and the British Crime Agency. He is accused of 53 crimes of a sexual nature committed between 1956 and the year 2000, all involving members of the same extended family. Most are believed to be male and were aged between five and 16 at the time of the alleged offences. A police spokesman said: “The facts for which the fugitive was sought cover a period of

time of more than 40 years. Approximately between the year 1956 and 2000, he is accused of multiple aggressions and sexual abuse. In particular he is charged with a total of 53 crimes of a sexual nature.” “The location and detention of the fugitive has been possible thanks to the close collaboration between the National Police and the British NCA through its links in Spain. The British citizen was arrested in the vicinity of his home in Albox (Almería).” The Brit has been placed in the hands of the court.

The Balearic Parliament has agreed to press the Government to give nude sunbathers more rights and reverse the trend of “hiding away in secluded corners”. Protesters say the rights of naturists have to be respected and all those interested in joining in should be “encouraged and respected”. The Balearic Parliament

has, however, drawn a line under a plea to allow nudists to drink or eat in beach bars and restaurants if they cover up their private bits with a towel or cloth! The political party, Podemos says the choice of whether or not to practise nudism on the beaches of Mallorca and Ibiza should be regarded as a human right but is increasingly being pushed into hidden corners.

Deputy of the group, Marta Maicas said: “Despite the nudist tradition of the islands, the increase in tourism has relegated its practise to smaller and secluded spaces, in many cases due to the lack of information of the bathers themselves who do not know their rights and who can practise nudism in a legal and safe way.” Naturism, Parliament was told, should be regarded as a “recognised practice” and welcomed with “freedom, tolerance and respect for

people and the environment.” The Government is being urged to include in the information and signage of all the beaches, the following statement: “Naturism is a way of living in harmony with nature. It is a recognised practice on our coast.” Signs on traditional nudist beaches will read: “This beach has a naturist tradition and we invite you to practise nudity and respect it.” Police training courses will also include reference to the rights of nudists.

Fugitive tried to change his appearance

POLICE TIP-OFF

British man wanted for ten sex offences in the UK has been caught in Benidorm, despite extensive efforts to change his appearance.

Police say he was hiding on the Costa Blanca after fleeing Britain when he realised he was under investigation. There was a European arrest warrant on his head for the alleged sexual abuse of two young girls when they were aged 13 and 14. He is alleged to have sneaked into their bedrooms whilst they were asleep. Police in Spain were helped by the National Crime Agency. “After learning that he was being investigated, the man fled to the coast of Alicante where he changed his appearance considerably to make it difficult to locate and arrest him,” said a spokesman. Despite this, police received a tip-off about the suspect hiding low along the Spanish coast. “The officers located and stopped him yesterday in the town of Benidorm. The judicial authorities of the United Kingdom have charged him with ten crimes against sexual freedom,” the spokesman confirmed.

Election countdown: Will you be exercising your vote in Puerto de la Cruz?

I

had been wondering what to write about this month. After all, the Carnaval is over, and the swallows are already starting to pack their bags, ready to head home for the summer.

April is a quiet month for visitors in Puerto de la Cruz, at least, it is until the hordes of Spanish school children start to arrive. So I have been nonplussed, unsure of a topic, struggling to come up with something even remotely interesting, until I remembered the leaflet that had appeared in my letterbox a couple of weeks earlier. If I’m honest I hadn’t paid it much interest at the time, I thought it had arrived far too early to be of any relevance, in fact I am surprised I still have it, was sure it had been recycled , but no, I found it buried in a pile of things to be actioned. I must have kept it for its amusement value. What is it? It is a piece of ‘election propaganda’ for the forthcoming local elections, which are taking place in Puerto de la Cruz on the last Sunday in May. So this has given me the impetus, but probably not the enthusiasm, of a topic to write about this month. It is raining while I am typing this which hasn’t helped my mood, but at least I have no excuse, there isn’t something more interesting I should be doing outside, so here goes. I know politics is not the most popular topic, I suspect I will have lost some readers already, many of whom are probably now browsing the personal ads, but if you live in Puerto de la Cruz you should at least have a modicum of interest in what is going on around you. Take this litmus test. Can you name Puerto’s current mayor? Far too easy, you should know that, he may not be the biggest person in stature, but he certainly puts himself about enough to get himself noticed, you must have seen him. Now try this. Can you name his team, would you recognise them in the street and do you know what areas of responsibility they hold? (If you aren’t sure of their names just throw in the odd Rodriguez or Gonzalez or maybe a Hernandez, and you stand a good chance of being at least half right.) Seriously though, all residents of Puerto, who are registered on the empadronamiento, as they should be, have a right to vote in the municipality elections and should, in my opinion, take advantage of that right on 26th May. Here endeth my party political broadcast on behalf of all non-Spanish residents. Now I am sure I have lost the last few remaining readers, so should I call it a day and cut my losses or should I continue with the journey, even though I am probably talking to myself. I have never been one to give in, so back to the leaflet. To be fair to it, it is more than a ‘Vote for me because I’m the greatest thing since sliced bread’ flyer, so to call it a leaflet is doing it a bit of an injustice. It is in reality a ‘glossy’ four page pamphlet which depicts the achievements of a particular individual, or perhaps their party, (it’s not that obvious) over the last four years. Not a mention of what the intention is for the next four years should this person or party be fortunate to be re-elected. Now for me, Mr. Joe Public, just an average man on the street (maybe not too average) and you are canvassing for my vote, then I’m not interested in what has been done, I know that already, what I want to know is what the future is going to bring.

What are the election issues in Puerto de la Cruz? Had it been longer than four pages I would have been tempted to call it a short story, but then that would imply it is a work of fiction, which it isn’t, well not all of it. But before I talk about its content, I have read it now, some of it is quite interesting, a word about its author. I am not in the business of naming or shaming so I won’t be revealing their identity. If you have received this ‘pamphlet’ then you will already know, if you haven’t, it doesn’t matter as there will be plenty more poked through your letterbox in the coming weeks, of that I am sure. I have singled this one out just because it was the first and far too early, in my opinion. Whether this was a deliberate ploy, to be the first one off the block with the polling date still two months away, then I think it probably backfired, unless of course, there is a second one, a sequel, still to arrive. Anyway I was going to mention the author, a person who obviously feels their fame or perhaps their notoriety precedes them, so much so they felt there was not the need to sign off with their name, instead choosing to have a ‘celebrity moment’ and just use their Christian name. It may be that it is to show they are friendly and approachable, or that they are one of the people. For a politician, I suppose, there can be a first time for everything. Now briefly to its content, because even I am bored with this and I am writing it. Yes, there have been improvement to services, there is no ignoring that, but had they not been starved of investment for years there wouldn’t have been the

need to spend so much in the current term. Yes they are starting to repair roads, again the result of years of neglect. Yet for me the most important thing is the list of capital projects, either finished, in progress, or under tender, and just how few of them have been both started and finished in the current four year term. However, there is not a mention of the usual suspects, i.e. new port, swimming pool, Taoro, Playa Martiánez, but then perhaps to do so would be political suicide. Finally, I just want to question if there was a need to produce this pamphlet. Surely in the age of digital media the same information could be conveyed without the need for paper. Yes, it could be argued that not everyone in Puerto d la Cruz is a techie or computer savvy, but, come on, anyone that isn’t must be so set in their ways that they have probably been voting for the same party all their lives. This town likes to promote conservation and sustainability and if you believe it we are the champions of recycling, so please if you have received one of these pamphlets and haven’t already done so please dispose of it responsibly. That goes for any similar literature received from other political parties as well. I know which bin mine are going in. Remember to vote, your vote could make the difference. Puerto’s councils are often formed by a coalition, so a vote for any of the parties is important and if you haven’t any preference just take a stab in the dark.

UK tax office benefits from global exchange of information By Paul Montague, Partner, Blevins Franks The Common Reporting Standard, where countries around the world automatically exchange information about taxpayers’ offshore income and assets, is now in full flow. Tax authorities are beginning to use the data received to their benefit. The UK government published the 2019 version of its “No Safe Havens” policy paper on 13th March, timed to coincide with the Chancellor’s Spring Statement. It outlines how the UK has seen “huge changes and improvements to offshore tax compliance in recent years” and lists some of the results of the Common Reporting Standard (CRS). HM Revenue & Customs received 5.67 million records on UK taxpayers’ offshore financial accounts in 2018. This involved around 3 million UK resident individuals, or the entities they control. The tax office confirmed that it has begun this CRS data to detect possible non-compliance. It also receives information from a “range of sources” and together this “unprecedented” amount of data is “at the heart” of its approach. Since 2010, the government has introduced over 100 new

measures to tackle non-compliance. This enabled HMRC to recover £2.9 billion in lost tax revenues and secure and protect over £200 billion. And this was before the CRS began providing more information. Since 2016, it has increased its investigations into high net worth individuals six times over. HMRC uses its “Connect” analysis programme to crosscheck the data it receives from abroad with UK data (salaries, bank accounts, loans, property, car ownership etc). This provides tax officials with information to challenge around 500,000 cases each year. The Common Reporting Standard came into effect in 2016, when the “early adopters” began collecting information on the financial accounts held by non-residents. Today 100 countries share information. The first exchange took place in 2017 (relating to fiscal year 2016) by 49 jurisdictions including the UK and Spain. Another 51 joined in September 2018. In the foreword to the “No Safe Havens” paper, Mel Stride MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury warned: “HMRC will continue to crack down hard on those who try to avoid or evade paying the tax they owe, as well as those who help them, by investing in the latest technology and using its tough new penalties.” Last year’s “Requirement to Correct” rules put the onus on taxpayers to regulate their offshore affairs. 18,000 individuals reportedly corrected offshore non-compliance before the 1st October 2018 deadline. Since then, offshore tax evaders face

penalties exceeding 100% of the tax. Those who missed the deadline still have the opportunity to regularise their offshore tax affairs. HMRC is clear that those who wait until tax investigators identity that they have paid less than they should will be in a worse position than those who voluntarily approach and cooperate with the tax office. The Common Reporting Standard is helping tax authorities around the world, including here in Spain, to detect past tax evasion and collect due tax, and prevent offshore tax noncompliance going forward. If you are tax resident here and have assets in the UK (or elsewhere), carefully follow the local tax rules, the UK tax rules and also the UK-Spain double tax treaty, to make sure you are correctly declaring income and paying tax where you should be. There are compliant tax planning arrangements available in Spain that can help you legitimately reduce your tax liabilities, particularly on your investment capital. So take specialist crossborder wealth management advice so that you do not pay any more tax than you need to while having peace of mind that you are not breaking any rules. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www.blevinsfranks.com

VARIOUS CAUSES

Why do cats sneeze? C

ATS do occasionally sneeze and this is not usually a cause for concern.

If your cat is sneezing more than usual and seems unwell, you should contact your vet. A sneeze can be a sign of something as simple as a nose tickle, to something more complicated like a virus. Just like humans, cats do occasionally sneeze and this is nothing to be concerned about. However, if your cat is sneezing more than usual and seems unwell, then it may be worth considering if something else could be bothering your pet and seeking the advice of your vet. There are many reasons that your cat could be sneezing, below are just a few

examples of what could be causing this. Much the same as us, cats sometimes just need to sneeze. Usually this happens because of a bit of dust or a simple nose tickle and will not extend for longer than a few minutes. Cats can develop allergies or an irritation up their nose. Potential allergens and irritants can include pollen, perfume, cigarette smoke, cat litter and/ or household cleaning products. Respiratory infections can be a common cause for sneezing in cats. The most common infections and viruses can include feline herpes, feline chlamydia or bacterial infections. The above infections are often accompanied by eye discharge and a cough. Your vet will be able to determine whether your cat has a virus or infection by examining them. NOTE: Feline Calicivirus Infection, otherwise known as

cat flu, is not usually a serious virus in an otherwise healthy adult cat and, because it’s a virus, antibiotics often aren’t necessary. Your vet will be able to offer more information on this.

Foreign bodies

On rare occasions your cat can get a foreign body lodged

in their nose. An example would be a blade of grass getting stuck in the back of your cat’s nose from chewing grass, this can cause choking and retching. This can also cause your cat to sneeze to try and eject the foreign body out of their nose. Sometimes this can dislodge itself, however

please see your vet if discomfort persists for more than an hour or two. If you are concerned about the amount your cat is sneezing or your pet seems unwell or distressed, you should contact your vet who will be able to examine your pet and determine the cause.

How to deal with cat allergies

NATURAL TOLERANCE

S

OME people choose to use prescription medication to help with their allergies. However, if you’d like to avoid this there are some steps you can take to help reduce your allergic reaction to cats.

Step one: Grooming your pet on a daily basis can help reduce the amount of fur that they shed around the house. Less fur means less dander around your house! Plus, your cat will enjoy the social bonding time with you. Step two: Carpets and floorboards have a habit of collecting lots of fur, so a daily clean/hoover can make a huge difference Step three: Air purifiers have been known to help reduce allergens floating in the air Step four: As people spend a lot of time in the bedroom and come into contact with bed linens which can harbour dander, keeping cats out of the bedroom should greatly reduce your reaction The good news is that research suggests that some people build up a natural tolerance for their cat over time.

A great part of the fun of wining and dining in Tenerife is finding somewhere different and it’s well worth a trip out to Santa Ursula to the warm and inviting Donde Mario. Though from the outside you might easily pass by it, the inside is elegant and captivating. Restaurateur Mario Torres surprises us every day with his extensive use of produce in season, and his unbeatable experience with wines and cookery. Just try his Cherne warm salad, a super-healthy Canarian fish soup, or his Lomo de Vaca Morucha. You will be captivated.

Set in a series of old Canary houses, this restaurant is made up of a labyrinth of inter-connecting rooms leading off from the bar area in the centre. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an English country pub with its low ceilings with wooden beams and warm décor. The food is fundamentally Canarian. They grow most of their own produce at their allotment and only use olive oil to cook with. Their ethos is a simple one, only use the best, fresh produce and cook it with thought and care. The menu is described as Picoteo, slightly more than tapas without reaching the full-blown three-course meal status. It is delicious and affordable. “La Bodeguita de Enfrente” won the “II Gastronomic Awards Cruzcampo Gran Reserva El Día-Mesa Abierta”, which took place last year.

Why not try a touch of “picoteo”, the Spanish-style of eating where, as the name suggests, you pick a selection of dishes and share with your companions. You will find “El Calderito de la Abuela” in Santa Úrsula and it offers a unique and homely atmosphere combining Canary cuisine with modern creativity. In 2016, “El Calderito de la Abuela” won the “Best Canarian Kitchen Restaurant Award” in the first edition of the “El Dia-Mesa Abierta” Awards on July 28th. The exterior of this property belies what you will find inside as it is full of charm and carácter and there is an incredible view of La Orotava valley. “A gem” is how it is described.

El Rosario kicks off hiking programme

FREE-FLIGHT AVIARY

Another first for Loro Parque with Australian arrivals

L

ORO Parque, recognised as the best zoo in the world, has recently incorporated a group of young black cockatiels to its aviaries from Australia.

E

L Rosario opened its season of walks with a route through the countryside of Arico.

A group of 55 hikers enjoyed the first of the seven trails organised by the Youth Council, within the “Patean2018” programme. Participants were able to enjoy a route that passed through the municipality of Arico, crossing places of interest such as the ravine of El Contador as part of a circular journey of around twelve kilometres in length. The next appointment will be Saturday, April 13th with the Caseríos de Guía route.

Four of the species are exhibited in the park in Puerto de la Cruz for the first time and one of them is in danger of extinction, so their presence will contribute to the sensitisation of visitors on the need to protect wild species and their habitats in the middle natural. The conservation centre thus becomes the only zoo where all species of cockatoos can be observed outside the Australian continent. Some of the specimens that have been incorporated into the exhibition have arrived directly from Australia and others have been born in the breeding centre of the Loro Parque Foundation where a large part of the specimens that make up the largest stock of species and subspecies of parrots are found. The installation, which is specially prepared for cockatoos, is a free flight aviary with great visibility to observe the activity of these majestic birds and allows visitors to see the specimens fly in their environment, while enjoying enrichments with trunks, eucalyptus and other elements that keep them physically and psychologically active, as well as food from their country of origin. All the Australian cockatoos that are in this space, where they practice their flight and are strengthened, are young specimens and, in the future, they will be able to reproduce. The recreation of its surroundings in Loro Parque reflects the company’s commitment to constant innovation. Thus, this novel space allows these birds to develop their muscles and interact with each other, which constitutes a perfect indicator of animal welfare.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Top ten healthy heart tips

A

healthy lifestyle will make your heart healthier. Here are 10 things you can do to look after your heart.

Give up smoking

If you’re a smoker, quit. It’s the single best thing you can do for your heart health. Smoking is one of the main causes of coronary heart disease. A year after giving up, your risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker.

Get active Getting – and staying – active can reduce your risk of developing heart disease. It can also be a great mood booster and stress buster. Do 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week. One way to achieve this target is by doing 30 minutes of activity on five days a week. Fit it in where you can, such as by cycling to work.

Manage your weight Being overweight can increase your risk of heart disease. Stick to a healthy, balanced diet low in fat and sugar, with plenty of fruit and vegetables, combined with regular physical activity.

Eat more fibre Eat plenty of fibre to help lower your risk of heart disease – aim for at least 30g a day. Eat fibre from a variety of sources, such as wholemeal bread, bran, oats and wholegrain cereals, potatoes with their skins on, and plenty of fruit and veg.

Cut down on saturated fat Eating too many foods that are high in saturated fat can raise

the level of cholesterol in your blood. This increases your risk of heart disease. Choose leaner cuts of meat and lower fat dairy products like 1% fat milk over full-fat (or whole) milk.

Get your 5 A Day Eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables a day. They’re a good source of fibre, vitamins and minerals. There are lots of tasty ways to get your 5 A Day, like adding chopped fruit to cereal or including vegetables in your pasta sauces and curries.

Cut down on salt

To maintain healthy blood pressure, avoid using salt at the table and try adding less to your cooking. Once you get used to the taste of food without added salt, you can cut it out completely. Watch out for high salt levels in ready-made foods. Most of the salt we eat is already in the foods we buy. Check the food labels – a food is high in salt if it has more than 1.5g salt (or 0.6g sodium) per 100g. Adults should eat less than 6g of salt a day in total – that’s about 1 teaspoon.

Eat fish

Eat fish at least twice a week, including a portion of oily fish. Fish such as pilchards, sardines and salmon are a source of omega-3 fats, which may help protect against heart disease. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not have more than 2 portions of oily fish a week.

Drink less alcohol

Do not forget that alcohol contains calories. Regularly drinking more than the NHS recommends can have a noticeable impact on your waistline. Try to keep to the recommended daily alcohol limits to reduce the risk of serious problems with your health, including risks to your heart health.

Read the food label

When shopping, it’s a good idea to look at the label on food and drink packaging to see how many calories and how much fat, salt and sugar the product contains. Understanding what’s in food and how it fits in with the rest of your diet will help you make healthier choices.

BREATHING TECHNIQUE

How to deal with panic attacks

A panic attack is a feeling of sudden and intense anxiety

T

HESE episodes can also have physical symptoms, including shaking, feeling disorientated, nausea, rapid, irregular heartbeats, dry mouth, breathlessness, sweating and dizziness. The symptoms of a panic attack are not dangerous but can be very frightening. They can make you feel as though you are having a heart attack or that you are going to collapse or even die. Most panic attacks last somewhere from five minutes to half an hour.

How to handle a panic attack

Professor Paul Salkovskis, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Applied Science at the University of Bath, says it’s important not to let your fear of panic attacks control you. “Panic attacks always pass and the symptoms are not a sign of anything harmful happening,” he says. “Tell yourself that the symptoms you’re experiencing are caused by anxiety.” He says don’t look for distractions. “Ride out the attack. Tr y to keep doing things. If possible, don’t leave the situation until the anxiety has subsided.” “Confront your fear. If you don’t run away from it, you’re

giving yourself a chance to discover that nothing’s going to happen.” As the anxiety begins to pass, start to focus on your surroundings and continue to do what you were doing before. “If you’re having a short, sudden panic attack, it can be helpful to have someone with you, reassuring you that it will pass and the symptoms are nothing to worry about,” says Professor Salkovskis.

Breathing exercise for panic attacks If you’re breathing quickly during a panic attack, doing a breathing exercise can ease your other symptoms. Try this: Breathe in as slowly, deeply and gently as you can, through your nose. Breathe out slowly, deeply and gently through your mouth. Some people find it helpful to count steadily from 1 to 5 on each in-breath and each outbreath. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. You should start to feel better in a few minutes. You may feel tired afterwards.

Oral health after 55: truths and advice

We talk with Víctor Cubillo, Artedental’s medical director, who gives us information and some advice so that time continues to shape ideas, perspectives and vital priorities, but never our smile

A

DVANCING years means taking care of our health more than ever.

The mouth, being one of the most showy and delicate parts of our body, requires special attention. After 55, the risks of oral infection, gum wear or having to resort to a dental prosthesis are increased considerably. Therefore, any person needs to carry out specific care to successfully prevent the onset of diseases such as caries, halitosis or periodontitis. Brushing your teeth, at least, twice a day, combining it with flossing and going periodically to the dentist, especially if you have special needs, are essential so that adding years does not mean a drama for the mouth.

It is easier to get cavities

After 55 years, the risk of caries increases greatly. At this age, almost 100% of the population has this disease in their mouth, which tends to reach the root, making it especially painful. It is essential to use a toothpaste with fluoride and use, at least once a day, dental floss.

After 55, the sensitivity is greater

With the passage of time, the discomfort and tooth sensitivity increase considerably, as the erosion of the enamel makes certain parts of the tooth, which had not been exposed to dangers until now, vulnerable to external agents.

Loss of teeth

The wear of the gums or other pathologies such as gingivitis or periodontitis, in which bacterial plaque accumulates on the teeth, can ultimately result in such loss of tissue that the teeth fall out. To avoid this possible nightmare, oral hygiene is unquestionable.

Body and mouth, now more connected than ever

With age also comes the possibility of emergence of some important pathology that must be conscientiously controlled like diabetes, cholesterol or cysts. It is important that at the time of going to the dentist, the patient communicates all the diagnostic conditions to ensure a satisfactory and safe treatment.

Dry mouth

Some of the most common concerns in people over 55 years of age is usually deteriorated aging. Clinics such as Artedental are specialised in counselling and treatment of people of this age group. Dry mouth, for example, tends to appear because of the intake of some medications as anticholinergics, but can be very detrimental to the quality of the mouth and should be treated as soon as possible.

Halitosis

On the other hand, the breath changes with age and halitosis may appear. Its causes are multiple and this can occur because of pathological problems or other external variables such as smoking, the taking of certain drugs or the diet itself. In the case that the patient has a dental prosthesis, there is a greater probability

that food residues deposited in it will not be located. It is important to remove and clean the prosthesis at night so that odours do not occur. If the person has previously suffered a cancer or is receiving treatment. It is crucial that you go to the dentist to avoid a necrosis and not affect their quality of life.

Tobacco: the worst enemy for oral health The effects of tobacco are harmful to the entire health of the body, but are especially evident in the mouth over the years. The deterioration in the colour and quality of the teeth are some of its most distinguished signs. Probably the most fearsome effect of smoking on oral health is oral cancer. Avoiding tobacco is essential for a good aging of the mouth.

Balanced diet and good oral hygiene, funda-

mental As mentioned above, the basis of maintaining good oral health consists, at least, of brushing the teeth twice a day and the use of dental floss. However, much more can be done to ensure good oral cleansing. Remember that the teeth should be brushed in movements from the bottom up, investing about two minutes in the four parts of the mouth: left side, right side, front side and tongue. If there has been an intake of sweets, brushing should take place at least 20 minutes later, since the acids of sugar weaken the tooth enamel and its cleaning can wear it out. The use of oral rinses is also highly recommended, especially to avoid bad breath. On the other hand, a balanced diet, low in added sugars, alcohol or coffee, is always important to take care of the mouth. The best medicine will always be prevention. Therefore, you must visit the dentist at least once a year to ensure early diagnosis and good health for the mouth.

MAKING HISTORY

Enter now for the three distances of Puerto’s Urban Race

T

HE fifth edition of the Urban Race of Puerto de la Cruz is to undergo a huge leap in quality.

The sporting event, organised by Club Atletas 97 Clínica del Pie Luengo and the Department of Sports of Puerto council, will be held on June 22nd at 8pm. For the first time in the north of Tenerife, the event will host the Canary Islands Championship in the distance of 5km. The 10km Clínica del Pie Luengo, the 5km Naviera Armas Canarian Championship and the II Solidarity Children’s Race Hotel Vallemar will be the three distances in which runners can register from now until June 9th. The Intersport stores and the website www.gesportcanarias.com will be the places where interested athletes can register. Puerto’s Mayor, Lope Afonso congratulated the work of the Club Athletes 97 for celebrating the fifth consecutive edition of a test that “grows in each edition and has been consolidated in Puerto de la Cruz thanks to the good response of the participants

and a job well done.” The course of the race, approved by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation has a circuit of 2.5km distance, departing from the Plaza del Charco and ending here as well. The runners will have to do two laps to complete the distance of 5km and four to complete the long test of 10km. The two distances will have a maximum completion test of 45 minutes for the test of 5km and one hour and a half for the 10km. Last year, the test was attended by 498 adult runners and 150 children. Also, eleven international athletes and the best Canary runners of the moment gathered in the tourist city. As a novelty in this edition, the II Solidarity Race Hotel Vallemar will benefit children fighting cancer as all donations will go to the Fundación Niños con Cáncer Pequeño Valiente.

LA LAGUNA

Annual race helps turn the spotlight on heritage The 20th edition of the Half Marathon of La Laguna is part of the “Heritage of Humanity Circuit” for the first time.

T

HE main objective of this initiative, which celebrates its second edition, is to publicise the 15 cities in Spain that have this category through popular races and, in turn, encourage physical and sports activity.

For the Mayor of L a Laguna, José Alberto Díaz, “the historical heritage is a fundamental aspect of the identity of the people. In La Laguna, this idea reaches its maximum expression since we are a World Heritage Site, which is why this race is very important for the city, since it combines our heritage with the practice of sport. A mixture that, in addition, supposes an important generator of wealth.” The tests that make up this circuit, organised by the Group of World Heritage

Cities of Spain in collaboration with EDP and Paradores, will take place throughout 2019 and will pass totally or partially in the heritage zone of each city. “In the municipality, we have plenty of sports events in which athletes can get to know the most representative spots of La Laguna, such as the Anaga Rural Park or the streets of Taco. On this occasion, our historic centre will be the perfect setting for a race in

which riders will be able to enjoy the beauty of our streets and monuments, “said Sr. Díaz. The Half Marathon, which will take place on May 5th, will be the sixth round of the circuit and more than 600 people have already registered. The sporting event, which has the support of Intersport and Coca Cola, will continue to have three distances: the 21kilometre race, a 10-kilometre

race and a 5-kilometre race. The departure and arrival point will be, as is traditional, in the Plaza de la Catedral for all modalities. The registration period is still open and interested parties can process their participation in the official website of the OAD (https:// deportelagunero.com/), in the Events section, where the telematic management platform of the same is located.

Mountain race once again produces thrilling finishes

T

HE mountain race “La Carrera de Montaña Subida a Tágara” once again proved an exciting event in Guia de Isora.

The seventh edition welcomed 540 participants in its two competitive modalities that ended in victor y for Cristofer Clemente and Zaid Ait Malek in the 34km race whilst Myriam Guillot-Boisset retained her title in the women’s section. In the 14km modality, Carlos Jesús Hernández

gained victory with Patricia Domínguez winning in the women’s section. The biggest thrills took place in the 34km category, in which Clemente and Malek competed side by side for a large part of the race. The final classification reflected a victory for Zaid Ait Malek with a time of 03:27:09, the same as

Cristofer Clemente. The podium was completed by Quito Santana with a time of 03:33:40. Guillot-Boisset clearly won the women’s section in 04:23:26. Helena Rodríguez entered second place with a time of 04:58:36. Gema del Valle completed the podium at 05:21:22. It was the third consecutive victory for GuillotBoisset in this test and the second in this category. In the category of 14km, the

results reflect a closer competition. Carlos Jesus Hernandez with 01:16:52 won, followed closely by Ruymán Martín, with 01:18:35, and Agustín David Reyes, with 01:19:45, completed the podium. Patricia Dominguez and Angela Morales fought until the last minute for the victory but in the final stretch Dominguez distanced herself enough to win. Yurena San Fiel closed the podium with a time of 02:03:28.

One of the most moving moments was the recognition made to Tony Ayala, who was until a little over a year ago coach of the UD Granadilla Egatesa., Tony acknowledged to be nervous about the homage he paid to his people but got a standing ovation. He also received an award from UD Granadilla Egatesa, which was collected by its president, Sergio Batista; in addition to the distinction made to the two-time world outdoor track athlete, Gabriel Pedroso Ferrer. The winners in this second edition of the sport gala were: Kick Boxing-Mar Rodríguez (best mixed club); Adoney Rhythmic Gymnastics (best female club); Lucha de brazoTeide Su (best male club); María Morales Navarro, windsurf world champion in junior category (best female individual athlete) and Cecilio Ruiz Rodríguez, champion of the Canary Islands mini GP 110 automatic (best male individual athlete). First deputy mayor, Marcos González said that “the sport in Granadilla has done, is doing and will make history.” He thanked those who compete and are in the front line and those who are behind; besides making a brief sports review for each of the population centres. The Mayor, closed the ceremony stressing the importance of looking after all the athletes, Granadilla by birth or adoption, saying: “The thousands of people who practise any sport and more than 60 clubs that Granadilla de Abona has, are what make the people great.” More than 60 recognitions were made to the following clubs: in football, sports clubs Aguabuey Granadilla, Raqui San Isidro, Charco del Pino, South Tenerife Area, Hermanos Pedro Galactica, Chiñama and Medano Sports Union, Pedro Rodríguez L edesma Foundation and

The webpage of the race (www.pinoleretrail.com) will continue to accept entries until April 12th. The Pinolere Trail had to change the date of celebration, initially scheduled for April 28th. This circumstance is due to the coincidence with the call for a general election. Organisers say this extension to the deadline will help the athletes. This variation does not affect any other organisational detail and, of course, the distances are maintained (Marathon of 42 kilometres, half marathon of 27 kilometres and the 11 kilometres) and the routes initially

planned. The delivery of numbers will occur on April 25th and 26th at the facilities of Intersport, in the El Trompo Shopping Centre, in La Orotava. All registrants must pass through the shop of one of the sponsors of the event to pick up a bag that gives a technical shirt commemorating the event and other details as a gift. The pickup time will coincide with the opening hours of the establishment In addition, during these two days various talks will be offered by various specialists in fundamental subjects for the mountain race.

What you should know about ITV inspections

T

HERE are many things that are checked at the ITV station during an annual inspection and some of these are outside the car i.e. mirrors. So, if you have a broken or cracked mirror does this affect whether your car will pass its ITV or not? The Applus group have issued some guidelines in order to assist clients to be sure they are not going to experience problems. The use of mirrors, according to the Applus Group is one of the most common things that people have doubts about. Before we continue we need to clarify the obligations of drivers when driving on the roads. The obligations differ for different categories of vehicles i.e. bikes, cars, vans lorries all can have differing obligations. So for a car registered as a Turismo it is obligatory for the car to have an external left hand side mirror and also an internal windscreen mounted mirror. This rule also applies to vehicles that are used to transport people. In some vans a right-hand external mirror is also obligatory. In large vehicles such as lorries, trailers and large vans it is obligatory to have mirrors with a large viewing angle, exterior as well as an internal mirror, although often these mirrors are not useful due to the nature of the vans/ lorries etc, visibility via these is blocked by the panelled doors and sides.

Broken Mirrors We often see broken mirrors on the floor in streets where cars are parked on both sides and there is little room for passing and careless drivers knock mirrors breaking them and drive off. For the owner this can be expensive. According to regulations a broken mirror at ITV is considered serious (grave). You must ensure that mirrors are fitted correctly, at the regulatory height,

as these are considered to be an extension of the driver’s vision to be able to drive safely. If manufacturers guidelines are not adhered to then it is likely that the vehicle will fail its ITV. Things regarding mirrors that are considered “minor defects” at ITV are broken mirrors on those that are not obligatory or badly fitted or loose mirrors. It is therefore in your interest to replace the mirror before going for an ITV.

of course not happen overnight and there will be a gradual change and there will be no penalties if your vehicle still has these types of bulbs. However, you can choose to change your lighting to LED lights to go through an ITV inspection but to do this the ITV station must approve the change in line with European Regulations. You would therefore have to obtain a certificate from the manufacturer proving they agree with such modification.

Light Bulbs

I hear you asking, Why, should we change our bulbs? Well we live in a society that is very much aware of the impact of many things on the environment and it has been proven that halogen bulbs use 65 times more power than an equivalent LED bulb. Food for thought. However if your car is considered a classic or vintage car then it is not possible to change them for a alternative bulb then it is legal to continue use of the halogen bulbs.

In September 2018 the European Union passed a law banning halogen bulbs and as Spain is a member country this change affects your home AND your car. LED lights can be an alternative (and new cars are of course fitted with this type of lighting) but in time your car will not pass an ITV if it has halogen bulbs, this will

Spanish property market stable in January as expansion cools down

The number of Spanish homes sold and inscribed in the Land Registry was almost unchanged in January 2019 compared to the same month a year before, as illustrated by the chart above showing sales figures every January since 2007. There were 42,850 Spanish home sales inscribed in the Land Register in January, and 47,645 if you include subsidised homes (known as VPO), all according to the latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), based on source data from the Spanish Land Registrars’ Association. The latest figures confirm my suspicion that the market expansion, which started in 2014, is running out of steam. Though not yet declining, sales are growing less and less each month. Admittedly, the figures are quite volatile, but this is the first time growth has been in the low single digits for three consecutive months since the expansion began. The next chart illustrates how growth has been consistently lower since about May last year than the previous period.

It’s only thanks to new homes sales that the market didn’t stray into negative territory in January. New home sales were up 12%, whilst resales were down 2%. It’s worth bearing in mind that new home sales tend to reflect purchase decisions made by off-plan buyers many months before. Off-plan sales figures for January aren’t available, but it’s possible they were also lower than the same time last year.

Spanish Property Sales by Region – January 2019 By region January sales were up strongly in small markets on the periphery for foreign investors like Extremadura, Huevla, and Teruel, and down heavily in tourist hot-spots like the Canary Islands and the Balearics. It wasn’t a great month either for the most popular property investor destinations of the Costa del Sol and the Costa Blanca, both down in January compared to last year. However, sales were up in the Catalan provinces including Barcelona, the Costa Brava, and Costa Dorada, perhaps because the political problems in Catalonia no longer alarm investors. So January didn’t bring bad news, but it wasn’t a great start to the year for the property market. The recovery has been going on for several years but the market still looks small for a country like Spain. Home sales are good for the economy, so we can only hope the expansion doesn’t run out of steam so soon.
