UNIONS SLAM Shock as dangerous UK fugitive arrested in hotel “AMBULANCE T CEMETERY” HERE was a shock for tourists when a dangerous UK fugitive was arrested in an hotel in Tenerife! The man was a member of a criminal gang who robbed bank branches in Britain and vans armed with guns. Police said he had managed to flee to Spain using the passport of a relative with whom he had a significant physical resemblance. “On March 21st, 2007, he was caught during a robbery in the British town of Swinton,” said a spokesman for the Spanish police. “After a chase, he was arrested and taken to a police station but managed to hide a mobile phone between his clothes, which allowed him to maintain contact at all times with the members of his criminal group. That was how,
L
IVES are being put at risk due to the “lamentable conditions” of the ambulance fleet in the Canary Islands, it is being claimed.
The union USO says patients, staff and the service in general are being jeopardised and urgent action has to be taken to reverse what they describe as an ambulance cemetery. The workers’ trade union has denounced the situation, saying it applies not just to the vehicles but the equipment and even the uniforms. They claim some of the ambulances leak and are flooded when it starts to rain, others have various mechanical breakdowns and repairs are not carried out, despite repeated warnings from the drivers which are not listened to. The unions say patients
need to be attended to “with dignity” and if they haven’t yet spotted the problems themselves, it is only down to the professionalism of the staff who have managed to hide them whilst they carry out their work. The USO has indicated that “the situation is almost untenable because the stress and responsibility of our work must be added to all these difficulties.” “Users, the staff and the service in general are being put at risk,” they reiterate. The issues are being blamed on constant budget cuts, with not enough money being allocated to resources.
The union wants the service to be controlled and managed directly by the Government of the Canar y Islands and a pettion with signatures has been presented to Parliament. Officials point to the Balearic Islands where there is already direct management of the ambulance service which has cut out-of-order resources by 50 per cent. The claims have been supported by the union, the UGT which says: “Loss of quality in the service for users, increase in waiting lists, cuts in resources and personnel, are the daily bread in this sector. So much so, that many municipalities have been deprived of this public service, leaving patients abandoned in respect of urgent and nonurgent transportation.”
the next day, the police officers who were carrying out their transfer were assaulted by members of their gang when they arrived at the doors of the Salford courthouse. Hooded and carr ying knives, they managed to free the detainee and flee.” Only six days after this, he took part in an assault on an armoured security van. He was arrested again and sentenced
to ten years in prison but, in November 2018, he managed to flee again and escape from the UK taking advantage of his probation. National Police arrested him in Tenerife during a largescale operation in and around the hotel. Its location was not disclosed but police released video footage of his arrest as they entered the room and handcuffed him.
Five hurt as hotdog stand canopy collapses
F
IVE people were injured when the metal roof canopy of a refreshment stand collapsed in Puerto de la Cruz.
The accident happened just after 7.30pm on Sunday in calle Perdomo during the Virgen del Carmen fiesta. A man was the most seriously inured as he suffered a head wound. Those hurt also included a 41-yearold woman and a girl aged five. Both suffered slight cuts and bruises. All of the injured were taken to hospital. The 112 emergency control centre had received a call to
Photo by Moises Pérez say part of the open flap roof at a hotdog stand had fallen on several people. The Canar y Emergency Service attended, together with the local police. Red Cross workers who were already in the area also
helped. An investigation has opened into the cause of the accident.

BETTER MOBILITY
Adeje creates more parking spaces
A
DEJE council has embarked on a new campaign to encourage motorists to park in the right places and not anywhere they can find!
The local council has already enabled, in the area of Costa Adeje, a total of 470 public spaces on avenida Moscow. With this action, the local administration aims to provide citizens with those spaces necessary for the better mobility of citizens and traffic. Costa Adeje is an area of great activity, therefore, the creation of parking spaces responds to the need of residents, visitors and workers who come daily to the tourist destination. With these new parking bays, explains councillor for traffic, Esther Rivero Vargas “we respond to a need from both a residential and mobility point of view”. In this regard, she stressed that “we want to
prioritise parking areas for cars and thus prevent people from continuing to park in areas that are not prepared for it, on sidewalks, on private land or anywhere that affects their own security; for this, we are betting on the revitalisation of commercial areas with this type of initiatives that allow greater fluidity and agility of traffic within the municipality.” Calle Azimut, located between the nuclei of La Postura and El Galón, will have 57 new places, which will directly benefit the citizens residing in that area. These 527 new public car parks, are added to the 200 parking spaces of Casa Fuerte and the future 285 that are being built in the Los Olivos car park.

Taxi driver robbed at knifepoint in Puerto
A
taxi driver in Puerto de la Cruz was robbed at knifepoint, with the culprits getting away with about 80 euros.
The incident happened during the early hours of the morning in the area of ToscalLonguera. One man has since been arrested but two others were involved. The victim, a salaried driver, had picked up three young individuals at the bus station parade and they asked to be taken to a nightclub. However, during the trip, they “changed their minds”. In the first place, one of the “clients” asked the driver to take him to the district of La Vera, where he paid five euros and got out. However, the other two individuals asked him to take them to the Toscal-Longuera area. When the driver arrived at the area, one of those involved unexpectedly seized the handbrake. The other man grabbed the driver by the neck and pulled out a knife. The driver asked them to let
him out of the car, since he was suffocating, and they took what they wanted. The thieves appropriated a wallet, the driver’s wallet and a purse he was carrying. In total, they got away with about 80 euros. The affected taxi driver went to the police station of Puerto de la Cruz and denounced the incident. The agents showed several photos of men to the driver who managed to identify one of them.

Police investigate brutal death in San Isidro MAN ARRESTED
P
OLICE have been investigating the brutal death of a 64-year-old man found in a garage in San Isidro in the early hours of July 3rd.
There has been widespread shock at this latest violent incident, for which an arrest has already been made, with a suspect appearing in court and being remanded in custody. The man who died was a taxi driver from Adeje. It is understood he had suffered severe blows and stabs but the case is currently under a secrecy order. Some of the injuries may have been consistent with being burnt. There are various theories about what happened, including a robbery gone wrong and torture. The 64-year-old victim had only just moved to San Isidro with his partner. The man arrested by members of the judicial police of the Civil Guard is of South American origin. He is not thought to be related to the victim.
Tax officers intercept anabolic steroids
T
HE Civil Guard and the Tax Agency intercepted a postal package with anabolics destined for the south of Gran Canaria.
The parcel contained 200 tablets or units of a synthetic anabolic steroid substance and 47 unlabelled vials with yellow liquid of anabolic type. The investigation was initiated as a result of locating a package in the routine parcel control at the processing centre. The package came from an Asian country and was declared as containing beauty products. The final destination of the postal shipment was the Gran Canaria municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Las Palmas).

Cabildo’s 4.2 million investment to bring new look to Santiago del Teide
TOURISM APPEAL
T
ENERIFE Cabildo is carrying out four projects in the tourist area of Santiago del Teide, which represent a global investment of more than 4.2 million euros. Moreover, the authority says the work “represents an important qualitative leap for the destination and that, in addition, suppose a continuity to all the tourist area so that all the space is regenerated in a uniform way.” Cabildo president, Carlos Alonso visited the zone accompanied by tourism councillor, Lope Afonso; deputy Mayor Ibrahim Forte and councillor Alberto Bernabé, as well as insular and municipal technicians. The first of the works, already completed, concerns the area between Punta Negra Avenue and La Gaviota. This action, which has a budget of 933,092 euros, includes the improvement and redefinition of a large section of the maritime avenue of Playa de La Arena where, in addition, connections with several streets have been improved. The redefinition of the urbanisation improves the characteristics of the totality of
the urban spaces of the surroundings, obtaining at the same time the lowering of the speed of the traffic in the main road and completing a circuit of tourist walkways. The works have also included sidewalks, landscaping, street furniture and lighting. As for the paseo of La Hondura, the work has a budget of 1.2 million euros. This project, currently underway, will allow the construction of a continuous promenade in the area of La Hondura that will revalue the tourist enclave of Los Gigantes. This new coastal promenade will run between the current Las Bajas seafront and the Mirador del Roque and will connect both routes. Specifically, and in those areas where the cliff allows it, viewpoints made with metal structures will be executed, as specified in the project. Banks, bins as well as signalling and lighting elements will be placed along the entire route.
Finally, the whole set will be embellished with the planting of different plant species. Another of the works promoted by the Cabildo in the municipality is the improvement of Flor de Pascua street and surrounding areas, which has a budget of 1.7 million euros. In this case, the idea is to promote pedestrian use of public spaces and its road network to make them more attractive and revitalise commercial activity taking into account the provision of parking, improving existing equipment and the urban environment. The project, which is being carried out at the moment, proposes the revitalisation of the existing free spaces, both in the Buganvilla square and in the Guíos beach, to generate a pedestrian path that connects them. This stretch will have a green space that will assume the function of a mattress against traffic and traffic signalling. The Cabildo also finances a new phase of improvement of the infrastructure of the beach of Los Guíos, a project that is
the continuation of a previous work executed by the council. With a budget of 378,661 euros, this action includes the construction of a new access ramp to the beach executed with removable elements; the installation of a watch tower and two showers, the elimination of the planters in Los Guíos street and the resurfacing of this road. The works will be completed with the installation of two prefabricated modules for changing rooms and storage.
Restaurants warned over electricity scam
P
BOGUS CALLS
OLICE in the Canary Islands are warning restaurant and entertainment venue owners to be on their guard against an electricity scam.
The Civil Guard has already detected at least five cases in the southeast of Gran Canaria. Calls are being made to businesses from a person who alleges non-payment of a bill to an electricity company and threatens to cut the supply off unless it is paid. The call comes from an “unknown” number, with the caller pretending to be from an electricity firm. They then demand payment for one or several pending invoices. They also ask for the immediate payment of the money in a current account that is provided so that they do not cut off the electricity supply,. The scam is aimed primarily at owners of local or hospitality businesses, since their phones are public and appear in different communication tools such as the internet or telephone directories. The scammers have already tried to get 3,000 euros out of one business.

DUTCH COURTS GIVE THEIR BACKING FOR THE TENTH TIME
Loro Parque tells Free Morgan Foundation “find another way to occupy your resources”
T
HE Dutch Justice has ruled in favour of Loro Parque in the case of the orca Morgan, confirming that its CITES permit should not be cancelled, as requested by the Free Morgan Foundation. With this ruling of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands, it is the tenth time that the authorities have ruled against the complaints made by the activist organisation. “Once again, on this occasion, and as all the judicial and administrative authorities have repeatedly stated, the Supreme Court of the Netherlands has emphasised that Loro Parque has top quality facilities and offers animals excellent conditions of well-being,” said a spokesman for the zoo . In addition, the ruling recognises that there is no limitation to raise with Morgan, which was one of the fundamental elements criticised by the Free Morgan Foundation, by claiming that commercial use of the animal was being made. Thus, it recognises that, although Loro Parque implements other activities besides the
exclusively scientific and educational ones, that does not prevent that this type of activities, which justified the CITES permit, are also carried out. Therefore, the Court sees no reason to invalidate the permit. “For Loro Parque, it is very important that the judicial and administrative bodies with competence in this matter, recognise and highlight the excellent conditions of their facilities, coming from authorities that enjoy absolute impartiality and independence,” said the spokesman. “In this sense, the recognised best zoo in the world wants to remind the Free Morgan Foundation that if, on repeated occasions, the CITES authorities, the European Parliament and the Dutch Justice tell them that they are wrong, it is because, in fact, they are wrong. Thus,
Wingate School is seeking to recruit energetic, flexible and dedicated Teachers for supply and maternity cover. instead of becoming obsessed with Morgan, perhaps they should devote their efforts to protect threatened populations of killer whales. For the tenth time: it is good to waste time and resources on Spanish, Dutch and European institutions.” The Orca Morgan has been in the custody of Loro Parque since 2011. The decision to transfer her to the spacious and fully equipped facilities of Orca
Ocean in Loro Parque was taken in order to provide adequate living conditions and needs for social interaction. Considering that this decision was taken at that time by the Dutch authorities (based on the opinions of independent experts) because Morgan’s return to nature was an unfeasible option, the only other option for this animal was euthanasia. Loro Parque is supported by
all relevant administrative bodies (CITES in the Netherlands and Spain, Zoos Inspection in Spain and the competent animal welfare authorities in Spain), which reject the demands and interpretations of the Free Morgan Foundation on the CITES permit. Therefore, the Free Morgan Foundation is the only entity that supports the position of releasing the animal. Over the past few years, Morgan has been living in Loro Parque under the care of a team of veterinar y professionals and caregivers; her general condition is excellent. She has gained more than 1,100 kg since her arrival in
the Park and her size is now comparable to that of other females of his age. Although she was diagnosed with deafness by an independent group of researchers, her caregivers have been able to establish a complete communication system through a network of lights - a pioneer and only method known in the world that has been developed for a disabled orca . Morgan is fully integrated into the group and has established social relationships with all orcas in Loro Parque. In addition, she has already had erfirst baby, Ula, which will be one year old in September.

“MONEY TRANSFERS TO CUBA NEVER HAPPENED”
Tenerife scam sees foreigners getting Spanish papers by falsifying income evidence
T
ENERIFE is at the centre of a paperwork scam after police discovered a massive network which organised the fraudulent receipt of Spanish residency cards. The gang enlisted the support of a number of money transfer booths on the island to faslely show that money was being sent home to families, mostly in Cuba and Venezuela, in a bid to show the foreigner settled in Tenerife was earning money and could support his or her relatives if they came over to live in the Canaries. Police said these booths were located in Santa Cruz, as well as in La Laguna and Las Galletas, as well as on La Palma. Operation Klan-TF II was carried out by the Civil Guard who have investigated 132 people for their alleged involvement. According to current regulations, a person with a Spanish DNI can request the reunification in Spain of their relatives who live in countries of South America if they can show that these relatives can depend economically on them. Police were tipped off by the office of foreigners of Santa Cruz de Tenerife who suspected that applications for Spanish residency could contain falsified documents, mainly relating to the sending
of money which never actually happened. For this reason, the agents analysed more than 220 files and, after consulting the different money remittance companies operating in Spain at an international level, it was found that the supporting documents provided were false. They located and investigated the 132 people who had presented these bogus proofs of sending money to apply for the residence card of their relatives, some of them presenting the same evidence for four different relatives. “Several booths, located in the islands of Tenerife and La Palma, acted as authorised agents of different money transfer companies operating in Spain and forged these receipts, using blank receipts available in their own establishments,” said a police spokesman. “This counterfeiting activity generated a source of extra income for the locutorios involved, since they saw a business in the need of those interested to bring their families to Spain from countries such as Cuba or Venezuela, charging them a
variable amount according to the number of falsified documents required.” Several raids were carried out in three booths in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Cristobal de La Laguna and Las Galletas where, after analysing the computers located in the counters of the establishments and paper documentation, proof was found that they were
carrying out those work of falsification. The investigators detected that this system of falsification had spread through the Cuban community (and to a lesser extent Venezuelan) through “word of mouth” with such speed that in a period of a few months, it was already known throughout the island. of Tenerife.

The vehicles were parked next to shopping centres and supermarkets in Añaza and Santa María del Mar. Union plea after “drunken” Irishman goes berserk at Tenerife airport
U
GUARDS HOSPITALISED
NIONS are calling for safety measures to betightened up at Spanish airports after an Irishman “went berserk” at Tenerife south and attacked two security officers, putting them both in hospital. They say urgent action has to be taken as a result of the rise in such problems, usually involving drunken passengers, and follows on from the death of a 64-year-old female security worker in May in Mallorca. She died on the operating table after suffering a broken leg during a confrontation with a holidaymaker who tried to go through a restricted access
door after having a smoke. The latest incident happened at Tenerife’s busy south airport and led to the arrest of the 49-year-old Irishman who is understood to live on the island. The Federation of Private Security Workers (FTSP) of the Union Sindical Obrera (USOCanarias) said it was “repulsed” by this latest attack on security officers. The man is reported to have tried to gain access to a restricted area of the Reina Sofia aiport on the holiday island at 8pm on June 30th. He tried to get through a security barrier and, according to witnesses, was “under the influence of alcohol”. The union says the man was told he could not enter the airport in this way and a struggle then followed with two security guards, one of whom fell to the ground and suffered a head injury. The Irishman then ran off and gained access to the restricted area of the airport where he was again stopped. During the process, another security guard was injured. The man was eventually
restrained by other staff and handcuffed before being taken away by the Civil Guard. Both injured security officers needed hospital treatment, including stitches, for various injuries. In a statement confirming the events, the union said: “From the Federation of Private Security Workers of the Union Sindical Obrera in Canarias (FTSP - USO Canarias), we want to express our “repulsion” in the face of another assault on security personnel, in this case at the facilities of the Tenerife South Airport, which occurred on Sunday, June 30th at around 8pm.” The union confirmed the injuries to both guards and called for “these assaults to stop, more resources and
legal protection.” The incident at Palma airport in May which led to the death of the female security officer involved a German tourist who went outside to smoke a cigar and then tried to get back in through a restricted access door. In the confrontation which followed, the woman fell and broke her leg but died on the operating table. The USO said afterwards that this incident involving violence was not isolated and could have been avoided if the Spanish airport authority had heeded previous warnings from staff. It said verbal abuse and physical attacks were becoming an everyday occurrence, especially during the high season, and extra personnel had been requested on numerous occasions.

COMPENSATION FRADU
Gang defrauded Brits already hit by time-share scams in south
P
OLICE in Tenerife have arrested three people, including at least one Brit, for scamming UK residents who had already been hit once by timeshare sharks.
Six others have been imputed but have not yet been arrested, either because they are living outside Spain or their whereabouts cannot be traced. All nine are said to have been involved in a fraud which saw them contacting Brits who were having problems with time-share properties and claiming they were lawyers who could win their money back or sort out their concerns. Police estimate the gang swindled Brits out of at least 120,000 pounds. The three people arrested are British and Italian, aged 25, 30 and 55. They have been charged with three crimes of fraud and belonging to a criminal organisation. The “missing” six would face the same charges. Police say the network made a list of people who had registered official complaints about time-share deals, all in the south of the island. The gang received the details illegally from “disloyal” staff of time-share companies and worked through the names with cold telephone calls. Three people, all from the UK, contacted the police early in 2018 to say they had been approached by a “legal firm” which claimed they could win them compensation but turned out to be bogus. “They said they were on the tail of the time-share companies which had either cheated them out of money or left them with no property at all,” said a police spokesman. “They claimed that if the owner hired them, they would win all their money back for them.” Once the owners agreed, they presented them with false paperwork to sign and asked for amounts of money up front to continue with the case. “The organisation was distributed in three hierarchical levels. The first was the head of the organisation, who made the decisions and steps to follow. The second level was the workers who performed the practical functions such as contact with the victims, processing of documents, recruitment of personnel that would act in the third level; holders of bank accounts for the payments made by the victims. The third level would be those responsible for opening bank accounts for the organisation and transferring the funds to the account of the leader of the organisation,” said the police. Proceedings are now in the hands of the courts.

HEAD INJURY
Medical emergency on Manchester flight
A
flight from Manchester to Tenerife declared a medical emergency after one of the passengers suffered “a considerable blow to the head”.
Air traffic controllers reported the incident on their Twitter site but no indication was given as to the circumstances. They tweeted: “Flight from Manchester arriving in Tenerife South notifies sick passenger on board who, apparently, has suffered a severe blow to the head. Medical attention is coordinated on the ground upon arrival. We hope it is not serious. #SafetyFirst #Trabajoenequipo” It is understood the flight was operated by Ryanair and had left Manchester in the afternoom and landed at the Tenerife south airport at 6.40pm. Medics were waiting on its arrival. Just seven minutes later, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by the Tui company arrived in Gran Canaria with another passenger who required medical assistance, which he received at the airport,

Cabildo approves bus station Arona sets outs its aims and improvements ENERIFE Cabildo has awarded the project of rearrangement of accesses and parking area in the bus station of Playa de las Americas to Ten Asfaltos S.A. for an amount of 384,864 euros and an execution period of eight months.
The decision was adopted in the ordinary session of the Insular Council of Government. Insular director of mobility and development, Miguel Becerra said that this work has as its main objective “to reinforce the operation of public transport, through new spaces adapted to the real needs of the area.” He also noted that “among other works, the project will include an exclusive lane for buses, an element that will allow us to facilitate and expedite the access of TITSA vehicles to the station itself, in order to improve frequencies and functionality.” This action is included in the Strategic Framework of

Insular Development (MEDI) and is part of a broader strategy developed by the Cabildo in order to improve mobility in Tenerife, not only through the adaptation of infrastructures, but also through the reduction of public transport rates. The project includes the
creation of eight waiting bays before accessing the boarding areas, the creation of direct exits to Adeje and to Los Cristianos, as well as a new access in the Adeje direction, with arrangement of the movements of entries and exits. The bus station is located on a triangular-shaped plot between the two roads of
Avenida de los Pueblos and it is intended to use extra land for the improvements. The current facility has capacity for 14 docks and does not have a waiting area prior to access to the boarding dock, which reduces functionality, resulting in the movements of entry and exit of the buses are mixed with internal movements of access.
Fire traps residents and five injured
R
ESIDENTS were trapped and five people were injured, two seriously, when fire broke out on the first floor of a three-storey building in Guimar.
The fire started in a downstairs room but affected the rest of the house in calle Fernando Díaz Cutillas. Crews from Santa Cruz and volunteers from Guimar attended and evacuated residents who couldn’t get out because smoke had invaded the stairwell. The property was burned almost entirely, while the adjoining houses were damaged by smoke. Of the five affected people, one was rescued in a serious condition and transferred in a medicalised helicopter to the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. The medical team also assisted two others affected: a young woman in serious condition and a young man with minor injuries, who were evacuated by ambulance. Likewise, they helped a woman and a man, both 63 years old, who did not need a medical transfer. The Civil Guard and Local Police also attended. The most seriously affected, two women aged 62 and 23, suffered severe smoke inhalation.
The plenar y session recently gave its approval to the new structure of the municipal government structured around environment and sustainability, public services and housing; economic promotion, primary sector and employment; social services, seniors, fiestas and health promotion; urban planning and land planning; finance and human resources; education, culture, sports and youth; security, transport and mobility; contracting, works, modernisation, transparency and citizen participation and promotion of tourism and communication, according to the proposal submitted to this body by the Mayor, José Julián Mena. With 16 votes in favour and seven abstentions (in addition to one vote against and one absence), the plenary session gave its approval to the plans, with a cost that is cut by 0.1. % with respect to the previous four years. Sr. Mena announced in his inaugural speech that, in the coming weeks, he will begin a round of contacts with the different political forces in order to address the “great consensus and agreements that the municipality needs and for which the absolute majority will not be an obstacle but a starting point.”
The different municipal departments will be in charge of taking forward issues such as the revision of the General Plan, investments in public spaces and infrastructures, the solution of outstanding urban issues, the creation of employment, improvements in sustainability, accessibility, sanitation and the integral water cycle, investments in public, social and sports spaces and the search for excellence in services and the enhancement of safety. In this way, investments will be made to complete the sanitation of the municipality, efforts will be made to solve the thousands of citizens living in urbanizations and areas without reception, the Arona Local Police force will be increased and the security office will be reinforced in El Fraile. Important investments in public and sports spaces will also be undertaken and projects will be launched such as the new security building of the municipality, the music school, the residence of the elderly of Arona centre, the care centre for the elderly in the old House of the Sea of Los Cristianos, the pool of Cabo Blanco and the cultural centre of Buzanada, among other projects.

Woman, 48, dies Cocaine found in shipments despite brave from Brazil sea rescue attempt T THREE ARRESTED
EL RINCÓN
A
48-year-old woman died a day after she was rescued from the sea in Gran Canaria by two passers-by.
They have been hailed heroes for jumping into the water when she was spotted floating about 20 metres from the coast of El Rincón. It is believed the woman fell from rocks six metres above the sea and hit her head in the process. The two rescuers were walking nearby and saw the accident. They went into the water with a lifebuoy tied to the shore and kept her afloat between them until the emergency services arrived. Red Cross personnel arrived and tried to revive the woman who was in cardiorespiratory arrest. This was then continued on board the emergency helicopter which took her to the helisurface of the Doctor Negrín Hospital, where a medical ambulance from the Canary
Emergency Service (SUC) was waiting. She later died. Meanwhile, the Canar y Emergency Service also attended the two rescuers at the scene of the incident, who suffered slight injuries, one of them being transferred to a health centre. Firemen, local and national police also attended.
HE Civil Guard of Puerto de la Luz and Las Palmas and the Tax Agency have arrested three people in Gran Canaria for drug trafficking.
Police say they were trying to introduce a total of 60 kilograms of cocaine into the island, which was inside a container of merchandise from Brazil. The detainees, all men, are residents of the island and between the ages of 38 and 52. The operation began when agents of the Civil Guard of the Fiscal Detachment and officials of Customs Surveillance of the Delegation of the Tax Agency in Las Palma arrested a man when he was caught with two bags containing 56 bricks or rectangular bundles with cocaine. The accused would have extracted them from the inside of a freight container from Brazil. The drugs were sent to a laboratory. As a result of the police investigations, two collaborators were located and arrested, both workers from different companies operating in the port. Police say the three were “part of a criminal gang” organised for drug smuggling using a method known as “blind hook”, that is hiding illegal items such as drugs in authorised containers without the knowledge of the owners.

OURISM chiefs in Lanzarote have applauded the choice of Papagayo as the best beach in Spain by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler.
According to the influential luxury travel magazine, “this golden protected beach, located south of Lanzarote, has won the vote by a landslide”. Tourism promotion councillor, Ángel Vázquez said: “It is a magnificent news that further enhances Lanzarote as a tourist destination and demonstrates the quality, care and recognition enjoyed by Lanzarote’s beaches, among which Papagayo stands out without doubt for its spectacular beauty. “ Condé Nast Traveler wrote: “In the south of the island of Lanzarote, in a virgin environment of extreme beauty and protected under the Ajaches Natural Park, is the wild beach of Papagayo,

Five men aged between 40 and 65, of Spanish nationality, all with a police record, have been arrested in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as alleged perpetrators of a crime of money laundering. Police said the criminal group received payments from a recently dismantled organisation dedicated to the drug trade and bought on behalf of companies high-end vehicles, of which agents seized eight valued at more than 200,000 euros. The drug trafficking gang was dismantled at the end of 2018 and was followed by a financial investigation into the criminal network. Police were able to verify that great part of the profits obtained by the organisation was used to buy, through a network of societies, high-end vehicles, some of which were used by the members of the dismantled delinquency network. The money launderers also arranged the legal circulation and the contracting of insurance for them.

ORE restaurants in the Canary Islands are facing stiff fines for not displaying IGIC, the Spanish equivalent of VAT, on their menu prices. The organisation FacuaConsumidores en Acción has denounced three further restaurants, one in Gran Canaria and two in Lanzarote, for not including the General Canarian Indirect Tax, which has motivated the Bureau of Sanctions of the General Directorate of Management and Tourism Promotion of the Government of the Canary Islands (dependent on the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports) to open a sanctioning file to these establishments. The three are added to two establishments already de-
nounced in March for which proceedings are pending. Facua says Decree 90/2010 regulates that “all the prices that appear in the menu and price lists must include the IGIC “ besides being” visible “the expression ‘IGIC included’”. It also mentions what is included in the Statute of Consumers and Users of the Canary Islands, which reflects that “all products must offer information about the total price that they are obliged to satisfy for their acquisition, including all cargo, tax or

Medics took over when they arrived at Playa Blanca in the municipality of Yaiza but they were also unable to revive him. The man, of French nationality, was declared dead at the scene. The tragedy happened just before 6pm. The 112 emergency control centre received a call to say that the man had been rescued from the sea but was in cardiorespirator y arrest. The Canary Emergency Service attended with a medical ambulance and a basic life support ambulance, together with the local police. “The Coordinating Centre
for Emergencies and Security (CECOES) 1-1-2 of the Government of the Canary Islands received an alert in which it was reported that an unconscious bather had been taken out of the sea and that resuscitation had been started,” a spokesman confirmed. “The 1-1-2 immediately activated the necessary emergency resources. The SUC personnel continued with advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation but could not reverse the arrest and confirmed his death.” Local Police took charge of the corresponding proceedings with the judicial authority.

CAMPAIGN PLEDGE
La Gomera stresses importance of ferry to Los Cristianos T
HE president of La Gomera’s Cabildo is demanding the urgent reinstatement of a maritime service between the island and Los Cristianos which has not been operating for six weeks. Casimiro Curbelo says the service is essential for the mobility and competitiveness of maritime transport on the island and has asked Naviera Armas “to act responsibly and recover service with this southern port as soon as possible”. He says he hopes for a prompt response to the reactivation of the route between Los Cristianos, in Tenerife, San Sebastián de La Gomera and Valle Gran Rey. The service has been paralysed for over a month after the company started to provide it in October 2017. “At first we were informed
that it was a temporar y situation due to the stranding of one of the ships that covered the route between the two Canary capitals. However, we know that the Champions Jet 1 - fast ferry that operated with Valle Gran Rey has since left the islands towards the Peninsula, “he explained. “We know that they are looking for a boat that meets the right conditions in different parts of Europe to ensure its speed, modernity and is able to unite in a short time the port of Los Cristianos, San Sebastian and Valle Gran Rey, as well as the connectivity with La Palma ,”
he added. Sr. Curbelo said that although the line is not a Public Service Obligation, “it has established itself as a maritime bridge between La Gomeraand Los Cristianos, facilitating the mobility of residents and tourists.” In this regard, he specified that more than 157,000 passengers arrived at this southern port, so he reiterated, once again, the need to recover the route. “We want an answer as soon as possible. In these months there are many Canarians who want to schedule their visit to the island and make use of this service, but have no option to book their tickets on this trip, “he said. He alluded to the economic impact that the operation of the southern regions has on the
connection offered by Armas, as well as that of Fred Olsen, the latter between San Sebastián, Playa de Santiago and Valle Gran Rey. For this reason, he reaffirmed the Cabildo’s position of “not lowering the guard in situations of this type, which reduces the economic dynamism and activity in these port areas, minimising the cohesion and mobility of La Gomera residents.” The president of Gomera emphasised the increase in the number of passengers using the interior ports of La Gomera. According to data from Puertos Canarios, in 2018 there were more than 182 thousand passengers who made use of both venues - Vueltas and Playa de Santiago -, increasing by more than 148 thousand users, with respect to 2017.

Four women released after being forced into prostitution

OUR people have been arrested for sexual exploitation of Venezuelan women in the Canary Islands.
As part of the investigation, National Police agents released four victims of trafficking in human beings. Those held for the alleged offences in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria and in Lanzarote are a man and women of 35, 26, 36 and 38 years of age and all of Venezuelan nationality. Those involved are related to women with economic needs in Venezuela and moved to the Canary Islands where they were forced into prostitution in homes and hostess clubs. They were told each had incurred a debt of 5,000 euros and had to pay it off. The investigations began at the end of last year when
police became aware of the existence of a criminal organisation, composed of women and men, dedicated to the trafficking of human beings for the purpose of sexual exploitation in the province of Las Palmas. Those involved captured young Venezuelans aged between 20 and 30 years. The organisation covered the expenses of transporting the women to Gran Canaria, hence the alleged debt. They were taken to clubs and homes located in the municipalities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Telde, Mogán and San Bartolomé de Tirajana and in the town of Arrecife on Lanzarote.

OUR people were injured, one of them seriously, during the massive Gay Madrid 2019 festival after a barrier on their float collapsed and they plummeted to the ground. The emergency services said one of the injured, a 36year-old man, suffered fractures of the pelvis and left foot, as well as a facial wound. He was taken to the Hospital Clínico where he was admitted in a serious condition. The other three, aged between 36 and 39, were also injured but not badly. One of them, a 37-year-old woman, suffered a moderate head injury and was taken to the Gregorio Marañón Hospital for observation. A 36-year-old woman also has a mild head injury and the
third person, a man, broke his arm. The route was lined with first aid posts so medics were able to get to the scene very quickly to deal with the injured and to calm the crowd. Hundreds of thousands of people flocked to Madrid to take part in Orgullo LGTBI 2019. The organisers said that on the Saturday alone, there were 400,000 lining the streets and squares for the event which took “History, struggle and memory” as its theme. It is the largest gay pride festival in Spain and one of the biggest in the world.
LOTTERY ATTEMPTS
Warning over fake 50 euro notes
N
ATIONAL Police arrested two men in Seville for trying to defraud several vendors of ONCE coupons.
The strategy used by the alleged fraudsters was to buy tickets with fake 50 euro notes. The National Centre of Analysis of the Bank of Spain warns the fakes are very like real ones. The men travelled in a van to the points of sale of coupons and took advantage of the difficulty that sellers presented to verify the authenticity of the bills and, therefore, committed the scam with relative ease. Police confirmed the scam was carried out in at least a dozen establishments.
Their main attack is against a July 25th event in El Espinar, a small town in Segovia about 50 miles from Madrid, but the campaigners say there are other places in Spain which allow the “becerradas”, including Zaragoza, San Fernando in Andalucia and Palencia in Castilla and Lyon. They have listed more than 100 locations but not in the Canaries where bullfighting is banned.
“These small calves just a few months old are stabbed to death. They have not even grown their horns. Between music and alcohol, the residents of El Espinar celebrate a macabre ritual of blood, torture and death,” said Pacma in a statement. The animal rights campaigners say they raised the issue last year and managed to get El Espinar council fined but there was no
ban. The local government of Castilla y León was ordered to pay 6,000 euros after police confirmed young students from a bullfighting school got into the ring to join in the kills which can only be done by authorised people. The council said at the time that there had been no infringements and the festivities were both traditional and lawful.

16th century statue of St George and the Dragon, dubbed one of Spain’s most botched restoration jobs when given a “facelift” a year ago, has finally been returned to most of its former glory.
The church behind the project has been fined 6,000 euros, as has the workshop which carried out the original repainting, and its pastor has vowed never to let anyone touch one of their precious artefacts again unless an acclaimed expert. “It was all very unfortunate,” says the vicar in charge of history for the Archbishop of Pamplona, Carlos Ayerra. The 16th century figure of St George and the Dragon had always taken pride of place in church of San Miguel de Estella in Navarra but its restoration led historians to describe it as a “fairground carousel figure”. They even likened it to the “Ecce Homo” saga which catapulted the small village of Burgos to international fame when an 80-yearold villager tried to give the religious painting a much-needed facelift. Following a proper restoration, the church says new rules have been put in place to avoid any repeat performance and the 6,000 euro fine will not be contested. “It was an oversight and we will pay the fine. In any event, we haven’t got a prison to put someone in any way!” said Carlos Ayerra.
The detainees are said to have exploited their compatriots, taking advantage of their precarious economic situation. Fraudulent work contracts were carried out by third parties who did not work in establishments in exchange for remuneration. The investigation began in June 2018 when a man of Pakistani origin denounced the working conditions with abusive schedules and wages much lower than usual in this type of trade. In addition, maintenance and lodging in homes with unfortunate hygienic conditions were deducted from the low salary. During the investigation, the reported employment conditions were confirmed. This was verified in this way that the workers’ work days were 15 hours a day, every day of the week. Likewise, it
was shown that at least two of the workers who had been discharged from Social Security in the fruit orchards investigated had never worked in them, the purpose of which was to impose undue social benefits for unemployment. “The detainees made fraudulent work contracts to third parties who did not work for them in return for remuneration. These people used such false contracts to obtain the application or processing of residence permits, as well as to receive subsidies or benefits for unemployment thanks to the contribution periods in the Social Security,” said a police spokesman. Two people of Pakistani origin have been detained for crimes against workers’ rights, documentary falsification and belonging to criminal organisation.

Spain cannot discriminate against non-EU/EEA countries for succession and gift tax of free movement of people and capital – and therefore Spain was forced to amend its legislation so that the regional SSGT rules could apply to anyone resident in the EU or EEA (European Economic Area).
I
By Paul Montague, Partner, Blevins Franks
F you have family living outside the EU/EEA, they should no longer have to suffer higher taxes imposed under the state rules for Spanish succession and gift tax. This is very welcome news for UK nationals with Brexit imminent. In Spain, inheritance tax (‘succession and gift tax’ or ‘SSGT’) is governed by both the state and the Autonomous Communities. Each of these 17 communities has the right to amend the state rules to make them more beneficial, as several have done over recent years, including here in the Canary Islands. There has been a general trend towards substantial reliefs and increased allowances, resulting in almost total exemption from inheritance and gift tax in certain cases. Until 2015, your heirs could only benefit from the more beneficial regional rules if you were “habitually resident” in that region. However, the European Court of Justice ruled that this treatment was discriminatory – it went against the EU principle
While this was very welcome, heirs resident in say Australia or the US – or even the UK following Brexit – could pay much more tax than if they lived in the EU. In February 2018 the Spanish Supreme Court published a judgement confirming that the Spanish succession and gift tax rules breach the free movement of capital established by the EU Treaty in relation to non-residents. Following this, the Spanish DGT (‘Dirección General de Tributos’/General Directorate of Taxes) published some binding rulings in December confirming that the SSGT rules should be applicable to all non-residents – regardless of whether they reside in an EU/EEA member state or a third country. Following these rulings, some taxpayers claimed for refunds for succession and gift tax paid under the discriminative rules. We have since heard that many of these claims (requested within the Spanish statute of limitations) have been successful and taxpayers have started to receive refunds from the tax office in Spain. Although the tax law has still not been changed in this regard, it appears that the Spanish tax authority now officially accepts the application of the regional rules, instead of the less favourable state rules, where a third party (i.e. non-EU/EEA) is involved. The European Commission seems satisfied with this approach, and
has therefore dismissed its official denouncement against the discriminatory rules previously filed by some Spanish lawyers. In summary, if you now leave or gift assets to heirs who are not resident in the EU/EEA, they should be able to claim the application of the regional rules instead of the less favourable state ones. This of course is particularly good news for UK nationals after Brexit. Anyone who believes they have unfairly paid succession tax under the state rules should speak to their Spanish tax accountant about making a claim. Please do not hesitate to contact Blevins Franks for more information about the regional Canary Islands succession and gift tax rules, or for advice on effective estate planning to reduce Spanish and UK inheritance taxes and achieve your wishes for your heirs. www.blevinsfranks.com The tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. NEW MEASURES
MAGALUF CAMPAIGN
Hoteliers urged to look twice Tourists at food waste and Spanish warned of buffets
fines for “balconing”
T
HE days of gorging yourself at Spanish hotel buffets may be coming to an end as Benidorm and the Costa Blanca become the first holiday resorts to take the “brave” step of addressing food waste. The hotel association, Hosbec says it realises the whole issue is very sensitive as holidaymakers, particularly the Brits, are so used to a massive range of choices at breakfast, lunch and evening meals. But both the Mayor of Benidorm and tourist chiefs insist something has to be done and they are prepared to lead the way with “courageous” new measures which are likely to see less choice at the buffet counters and starters or desserts already pre-packed. Signs will also be put up asking hotel clients to “think twice” before they pile so much food on their plates. Hosbec says the campaign isn’t motivated by cost, although it is estimated that in Spain, each restaurant throws away about 2,700 pounds worth of food each year as a result of over-packed buffets. The driving force, the organisation insists, is the sheer waste of food in a tourist trade which is becoming more committed to sustainability and care of the environment. “We understand that the challenge is complex, especially in the holiday hotel sector where the gastronomic offer is based on the free buffet,” says the group in a statement. “However, this translates into a tendency to offer a great variety of dishes which in many occasions leads to an overabundance of food.” Hosbec says it knows the
P
OLICE in Magaluf have fined at least three tourists so far this season for “balconing”and have warned there will be more penalties unless drunken holidaymakers clean up their act.
task to change habits is going to be a very difficult one but it has produced a new guide aimed at hotels and customers. Measures to reduce food waste include NOT refilling buffet counters if service is about to come to an end, reducing the number of salads available, putting cereals into cylindrical dispensers, offering fruit with its skin still on rather than already peeled and prepared, putting yogurts and biscuits in individual sealed packages, food served in individual portions or by weight, reducing the size of the buffet food containers, using smaller plates, offering bite-size puddings and providing coffee and water via dispensers. However, the good news is that hotel guests WILL be encouraged to take away any food left on their plates by putting it in plastic containers or doggy bags. The hoteliers say they would rather see this than have the food thrown out.
2018-2019
Nevertheless, all holidaymakers will be encouraged to play their part by only taking amounts of food they know they can eat and special signs will be put up to explain the objective. Those who do take part may get “rewards” from the hotels.
It will be up to individual hotels to decide how to proceed with the new campaign but Hosbec says extensive work will be needed by each establishment to look at the food they order, revise their menus, control waste, use seasonal food and so on.
All three incidents happened during June and are believed to include a young Brit who deliberately launched himself from the second floor of an hotel onto trees below and then tried to claim 35,000 pounds compensation by alleging he slipped in the swimming pool! He suffered several broken bones. The fines are between 600 and 1,500 euros and can also apply to anyone who encourages a friend to have a go at balconing, either to jump into a swimming pool or gain access from one room to another. Balconing is considered a serious offence. There have been a number of other balconing incidents already this season, involving young tourists of different nationalities and varying degrees of injuries. In total, the number of sanctions in 2019 is three, all filed in June. In 2018, eleven fines were imposed for balconing. “ Normally it is young tourists who have consumed a great deal of alcohol,” said a spokesman for the council. Calvia council is once again calling on the government to ban all aggressive drink offers.

Setback in Branson’s plan for “Europe’s best eco-resort”
S
IR Richard Branson’s plan to open “Europe’s best eco-resort” on a world heritage site in Mallorca has suffered another set- back, 17 years after red tape first thwarted his dream. Objectors claim to have won a major victory in their
fight to keep the 4,000-acre Son Bunyola estate in Banyalbufar as unspoilt as possible and to resist its development as a luxury hotel complex. The political platform, Podem Mallorca says the development licence for the project has been refused by the island’s government, claiming it does not meet the criteria for protecting the Serra de Tramuntana region, a UNESCO World Heritage site. They say they are “delighted” and will continue to oppose “millionaires who want to turn our protected heritage into
luxury hotels”. Mallorca council is said to consider the plan “too aggressive” and wants to see something “more in keeping with the characteristics of the natural and ethnological environment, in which the typical terraces of the municipality of Banyalbufar stand out”. Richard Branson repurchased Son Bunyola in 2015, 13 years after he sold it when failing to win permission to create the new hotel. He is said to have bought it back for £11m following a change of heart and a realisation
that “he really missed Mallorca” which he had “loved since being a child”. The centre of the estate is a finca building dating back to the 1800s, surrounded by vines, citrus fruit trees, almonds and olive trees, described by the tycoon as “absolutely beautiful”. According to Podem, the Heritage Commission has suspended the processing of the application “because the project presented for the hotel does not comply with the necessary requirements as a cultural interest.”

Chikungunya diagnosis from Alicante was a mistake, says Iceland lab
H
EALTH chiefs in Iceland have been left with red faces after admitting that a laboratory wrongly diagnosed three holidaymakers of contracting the chikungunya virus whilst on holiday in Alicante! The popular resort has been on a major alert for infected tiger mosquito and checks
had already started at the luxury villa where the family had stayed for ten days, as
well as the surrounds of an hotel and local beach. But now, officials in Reykjavik have confessed to misreading the symptoms the two women and child showed, which are similar to flu. Spanish newspapers say

What should I do in the case of a car accident?
S
UMMER is coming in beautiful, sunny Spain. With temperatures soaring it’s a great feeling, although a tad hot at times for all expats that live and work in this tranquilo environment; tranquilo that is until the influx of tourists from many countries around the world especially from Britain and the rest of Europe. Now, more than other times during the year, one needs to be even more careful than ever on the roads. With all these extra cars and drivers, who are perhaps more used to driving on the left, an increase in the risk of traffic accidents is inevitable. Always make sure your tyre pressures are correct by checking them at least once a month. Also check your car’s radiator level is topped up; the last thing you want is to overheat and have to wait for a breakdown truck on the edge of a busy motorway! It’s also illegal to run out of screen wash, so make sure this is topped up too. And driving with flip-flops or shoes with no back is not permitted either. Needless to say, seat belts must be worn all round, and young children need safety harnesses. Using mobile phones are a definite no, INCLUDING texting, which is probably worse than speaking. Should the unthinkable happen, here are some tips that everyone, from a new
driver to an experienced one, should remember in the case of an accident: * Stay calm and wear the reflective vest * Get to a safe area near the accident scene, turn on your emergency flashers and use the two triangles * Make sure everyone is okay and call 112, if necessary * When it is safe, take pictures of the vehicles involved, damage, road signs, etc. * Get statements and contact information from any witnesses * Complete the accident report: write down the other driver ’s licence number, insurance details, vehicle information and phone number. Remember it has to be signed by both drivers and reported within seven days; If you need road assistance, call immediately to 900 101 369, Liberty Freephone Number, where you will be attended in your own language. LIBERTY SEGUROS Car
Insurance is tailor-made with you in mind and is perfect for Expats in Spain. It offers total coverage to both the driver and passengers in case of an accident, as well as 24/7 roadside assistance by calling a freephone number. It also includes a courtesy car for up to 35 days, personal liability for you as a pedestrian or amateur cyclist and you will get a 30% compensation on top of book value in case of total loss or theft. You can also select a vehicle repair garage of your choice to trust and give you peace of mind. the head of epidemiology of the Ministry of Health of Iceland, Thorolfur Gudnason, admits that they diagnosed the chikungunya virus “by mistake” . He has described the incident as “unfortunate”and has put it down to a “laboratory failure” . In an interview with El Pais, he says: “The laboratory has explained to us that it has found the cause of the error, which has already been corrected, and we have informed all relevant authorities of this unfortunate incident, including the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), WHO and the Spanish Ministry of Health.” The members of the Icelandic family were on vacation in Alicante from May 17 to 31 and were diagnosed, at first, of carrying this viral disease transmitted by the tiger mosquito after suffering from fever, rash and joint pains. Iceland activated the European alert on June 12 to inform Spain and the ECDC of the three diagnoses, made to a 37-year-old woman, her five-
year-old son and a mother’s sister. Mr. Gudnason said the tests, using DNA, gave a positive but FALSE reading in all three cases. This is the second time an error has been made of this kind. On August 3, 2015 , Valenciana alerted the European network that the tests carried out on a resident of Gandía, aged 60, had tested positive. This was later reversed. Both instances would have been the first time chikun-
gunya had been detected in Spain. The Spanish Ministry of Health says it has been told of the mistake and is waiting for official verification. All hospitals and health centres in Alicante had been put on red alert to watch out for other cases and disinfecting of areas where the three Icelandic tourists had visited was being planned. It has not yet been revealed what, if anything, the holidaymakers had been suffering from.

Travelling safely with pets W
HEN you have a pet, they fast become more than just an animal they become a member of the family. This is why when travelling with pets in a car it is very important to make sure they are safe and as comfortable as possible. A pet can be a great travelling companion if correctly transported or they can be a great danger to road safety and themselves, when not.
Before traveling with your pet never forget to prepare them for the journey ahead as you would with any other member of your family. 1. Make sure that your pet has done his or her business before getting into the car. 2. Some pets, like dogs, can get car sick in the car. To help stop this take your dog on short rides in the car with frequent walks to help get them used to the feeling. 3. Make sure that you have your pet’s passport and documentation (this is more important when going on long journeys or holidays than when just traveling locally to your home) 4. Don’t put them in the car until they are calm. If the animal gets in the car when it is nervous then the trip will more than likely start off badly, causing potentially stress to not only the dog but to the owner too. Once everything is ok and you set off you can safely take your attention away from your pet. However, there are some important points to be aware of: Breaks on long journeys. It’s important to take short breaks to allow yourself to rest, however it is also important for your pet to rest. Remember to take a break somewhere safe and take care when opening the car so as to ensure that your pet doesn’t cause itself harm or another road user. Remember NEVER leave your pet in a car during a break without any ventilation as animals temperature rises much faster than ours. Loose Pets. Always check that you have adequate safety restraints for your pet. They should never travel loose so as to ensure that they aren’t hurt during travel on in the event of an accident. This is obligatory by law.
Pet safety restraints It is illegal to travel without your pet safely restrained, failure to do so will incur a 100€ fine. There are various different types of restraints that comply with European homologation. Dependent on size and weight, one of the following should be used: * Transport crate. This is one of the safest methods of transportation of pets, perfect for small animals or cats. Most people sit the crate on the seat and secure it with a seatbelt. This is proven to be dangerous for your pet, in the event of an accident the crate can slide which then causes it to break leaving your pet lose in the vehicle. The correct placement for a crate is behind the seats on the floor with the door facing sideways. Obviously, this cannot be done in small cars. * Pet grill. Choose a grill if your pet is large in size and your vehicle is suitable. With this grill you can separate the front seats from the back or the boot from the rear of the car. This ensures that your pet isn’t loose inside the vehicle and doesn’t feel trapped or closed in, moreover it allows them to see and most pets like to see where they are! * Harness and seatbelt. You could also use a harness and secure your pet with the seatbelt. This type of system is used predominantly for dogs but please remember never secure the seatbelt directly to your dog’s collar as it can severely injure your pet in the event of an accident.

DIFFICULT TIMES
Breaking up but who gets custody of the pet?
E
XPERIENCING a relationship breakdown is usually a stressful time for all parties involved. It can be made even more upsetting when considering what to do about your pet. Many of us think of our pet as one of the family and the thought of losing them, as well as dealing with the emotional turmoil of a break up, can at times feel too much. Sadly 10% of people said they had lost a pet during a break up with a partner, with more than 5% saying they had had to work out visiting hours with an ex. However, there are a few things that you can think about in order to make the transition for your pet an easier one. How pet ownership is legally decided While pet owners will disagree, in the UK pets are considered property from a legal standpoint. If a decision can’t be mutually reached on custody
of your pet and you don’t have proof of ownership in your name, a court could decide on legal ownership and the return of the animal. However, they don’t have the power to order the legal owner to give access to the dog to the non-legal owner. A court may take into consideration the following: Who bought the dog Who the key provider is Whose name is registered on the dog’s microchip and insurance Who is registered with the vet
Pet custody in divorce & separation The best thing is to settle pet custody outside of court, and to come to a mutual decision
together. These can be hard conversations to have but, if you can, you will need to sit down with your partner and discuss what the arrangements will be regarding who will be keeping your pet, and whether the decision you have made will be the best for them.
The best decision will depend on what pet you have. For instance, if you have a dog and are considering sharing custody, you should consider what schedule will work best for your dog. They should have a key carer who has both the time and money to be able to care for them on their own. This is slightly different for cats, as they become more attached to their environment and are better staying with the partner who is remaining in the same house. If neither of you are staying in the same place, then you can discuss who is in the best position to keep the cat, bearing in mind things like money, time and location (i.e. is it away from a busy main road?). NOTE: If you are discussing some form of shared custody, be sure that your training remains consistent – if your pet is allowed on the sofa in your house and not in the other’s they will soon become confused about what they are allowed to do.
Who gets custody with two pets?
If you have two pets, you will need to think about their relationship with each other. If you have two pets that are attached then, while it may seem like the fair decision to have one pet each, this may not be the best decision for them. However, if your pets are not particularly fond of each other, or seem more content when they are on their own, then splitting them up may be the right option for ever yone involved.
How will my pet react to the change in circumstance?
It’s important to remember that your pet can easily sense changes in their environment. This means that if there is
tension in the home or arguing, they can pick up on this and this may cause behaviour changes. If you can, tr y to keep arguing and emotional discussions to a minimum around your pet. Be sure to carefully monitor your pet for any changes in behaviour or appetite - this can be an indication that your pet is feeling anxious or stressed. A hormone diffuser such as Feliway or Adaptil can help keep your pet calm during what can be a stressful period of time.
Moving day for your pet
The days leading up to and immediately after your move can be stressful for everyone in the household, including your pet. All your pet has known and become familiar with, in terms of household objects and smells, changes dramatically and it is not surprising that some pets become stressed when moving house, with dogs and cats being most affected. You may wish to consider placing your pet in a boarding kennel or a family/friends home for the duration of the move, which has the advantage of keeping them safe and stress-free while allowing you to attend to the details of the move. Once safely settled into your new home, with ever ything unpacked, collect your pet and dedicate the time needed to settle them into the new environment.
Settling your pet into a new home When settling into your new home, remember that this will be a big change for your pet, so try to keep as much of the same routine as you can. If your pet has a specific time that they usually eat then try to
keep this the same. Place familiar bedding and toys around your new home so that they are surrounded by familiar smells and, if you have a dog, try to walk them around the same time that you would usually. For dogs, it’s a good idea to slowly reintroduce them to being left on their own in your new home. With all the changes in their environment, they may find it hard to adjust in the beginning. Given time and patience, they will get back into their usual routine.
The important/legal bits There are things that you will need to consider from a legal perspective if you are moving with your dog. You will need to update your dog’s pet tag/ID tag to include your full name and new address. It is also recommended that you include your number, though this isn’t a legal requirement. Saying goodbye to your pet Parting with a pet can be a sad and difficult experience. Pets can help us in so many ways, from calming and supporting us, to comforting us and making us smile and laugh. They really are part of the family. However for those couples who have had to go through a breakup it can be a double blow to face the devastation of not only losing a partner but a much loved pet. Donde Mario
La Bodeguita de Enfrente
Cuesta de la Villa
Cuesta de la Villa
Cuesta de la Villa
A great part of the fun of wining and dining in Tenerife is finding somewhere different and it’s well worth a trip out to Santa Ursula to the warm and inviting Donde Mario. Though from the outside you might easily pass by it, the inside is elegant and captivating. Restaurateur Mario Torres surprises us every day with his extensive use of produce in season, and his unbeatable experience with wines and cookery. Just try his Cherne warm salad, a super-healthy Canarian fish soup, or his Lomo de Vaca Morucha. You will be captivated.
Set in a series of old Canary houses, this restaurant is made up of a labyrinth of inter-connecting rooms leading off from the bar area in the centre. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an English country pub with its low ceilings with wooden beams and warm décor. The food is fundamentally Canarian. They grow most of their own produce at their allotment and only use olive oil to cook with. Their ethos is a simple one, only use the best, fresh produce and cook it with thought and care. The menu is described as Picoteo, slightly more than tapas without reaching the full-blown three-course meal status. It is delicious and affordable. “La Bodeguita de Enfrente” won the “II Gastronomic Awards Cruzcampo Gran Reserva El Día-Mesa Abierta”, which took place last year.
Why not try a touch of “picoteo”, the Spanish-style of eating where, as the name suggests, you pick a selection of dishes and share with your companions. You will find “El Calderito de la Abuela” in Santa Úrsula and it offers a unique and homely atmosphere combining Canary cuisine with modern creativity. In 2016, “El Calderito de la Abuela” won the “Best Canarian Kitchen Restaurant Award” in the first edition of the “El Dia-Mesa Abierta” Awards on July 28th. The exterior of this property belies what you will find inside as it is full of charm and carácter and there is an incredible view of La Orotava valley. “A gem” is how it is described.

K9
All dogs deserve a second chance, a new beginning
M
EET this beautiful dog, Nyssa. Her name, in Greek, means New Beginnings and this girl really needed one. Over a year ago, she was abandoned at K9 one night and put in with two of dogs who were in our bigger kennel across the road at the time. These dogs were not great with other dogs, so it was a miracle they did not harm her but when we saw Nyssa the next day, we could see why they didn’t. When we arrived at the kennels the next morning, we saw this very scared, very nervous dog who was not in good condition at all. She had massive sores on her back end and her skin was quite bad. It became quite clear that she was just used for breeding and these sores were from constant sitting on hard floors. She had no life. She immediately touched all our hearts at K9. Her trust was gone, understandably and it took a long time, months even for her to begin to trust us. Her tail remained down between her legs for quite some time. We gave her lots of love and affection and thankfully she began to trust us. The more we get to know her, the more we see the
loving playful side to her and when she knows you, she really does open up. She is a K9 over a year now and does get overlooked because she is still nervous of new people, so her nervous barking can deter people away from her. She needs to be shown that there are loving people out there and that she can have the chance of a loving home. When you look at Nyssa her eyes look so sad, and all you want to do is protect her and make her feel ok. She would need a family who were willing to be patient with her
and who were willing to make the effort to make her feel so loved. She really needs this. Her safe place right now is K9, as she knows nowhere else so when we take her for walks, she does not like to go very far away. We want her to enjoy her freedom and to love going for walks, so she can be the
beautiful, playful dog we know she can be. She has never had the chance to be a puppy, to play, and if someone can come and give her that, it would be a very special thing. Please come and meet her at K9, please don’t overlook her. She deserves a second chance. Can you give it to her?
More than 200 dogs still need a ACCION DEL SOL new home
W
E have more than 200 dogs in our care that are desperately seeking loving new homes. Eighty of those dogs are Canarian Podencos whose hunting days were over so they were just abandoned or that had serious injuries and left to die. We also have more than 60 dogs who are classed as dangerous dogs predominately pit bulls and staffies. When will people realise the crisis that is around us and realise that castration and sterilisation is so important to aid this horrendous situation. It is almost impossible to rehome these dogs with only one or two occasionally finding a home. The rules are very strict here now and you have to have a dangerous dog licence and insurance to be able to adopt these dogs but it is relatively easy to do and we can help and advise you on how to comply with the legislation. Their lives are spent in a kennel with a small run ,
yes they have the best care possible but no love no freedom to run and play. Please can we all help to ensure we do not let our pets breed and please adopt not buy a dog. We are open during the summer with our normal hours. If you have any spare time the dogs would love a walk and some cuddles so please do come and make a dogs day. Please do call the refuge on 664321219 or 602463242 between the hours of 8am -17.00 if you can help in any way we are always in need of tinned dog food for our older dogs blankets,
towels, sheets, dog toys, and collars and leads, if you have any of the above to spare they would be very much appreciated at the refuge, or visit Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons from 14.00-17.00pm and Saturdays 13.00- 16.00. We are situated directly under the Eolica Parque exit 52 on the TF1 north bound which is after the after the El Médano junction . Head for the giant windmills on the coast and we are the buildings on the right hand side or email the refuge at teneriffa@aktiontier.org or visit our Facebook page.
All Saints Church news, Puerto
C
LOSE to the cathedral in Seville, but sufficiently tucked away to be off the radar of many tourists, there’s a remarkable museum housed in a former hospice for ageing priests, the Hospital de los Venerables Sacerdotes. I was drawn to it, not because I was feeling particularly like a ‘venerable sacerdote’, although that may have been part of it, but because of its wonderful collection of seventeenth-century paintings by artists including Murillo and Velásquez.
The building itself is a place of extraordinary calm, being constructed around a central courtyard with orange trees and a sunken fountain. To be able to wander around in the quiet, in the midst of a noisy city and in the course of a busy life, was sheer joy. Being on holiday, if only for a few days, is a chance to allow ourselves time to do stuff, or to think about things, that we would not normally have time for. It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to do that,
and it’s equally a privilege to welcome other people into our space so that they too can relax, reflect and enjoy a change of scene. It’s always a pleasure for me to see tourists wandering into our church or looking in from outside while the Sunday service is in progress. Back home I imagine they wouldn’t have the time or even the inclination to do that: here there is a space for them and they are welcome to use it however they choose. The pulpit in the chapel of the
Hospital de los Venerables has a large engraving on the front of it: the Latin command ‘intelligite’ – ‘understand’. I don’t know whether this is directed at the congregation or at the preacher, or both. But I do know that taking a holiday, whether in a crowded city, in the mountains or on the beach, is an opportunity to understand new things, about ourselves and about our surroundings. If that leads you to peek inside the church door on a Sunday morning, then please be our guest. Our services: Holy Communion on Sundays at 9.30 am and 11.00 am (German service at 5.00 pm, fortnightly in summer) and on Wednesdays at 10.00 am. Taizé worship (alternate Thursdays at 5.30 pm) will resume in September. Chaplain: The Revd Dr Paula Clifford Tel: 922 38 40 38; Email: paulaclifford4@gmail.com

ENERIFE Cabildo and Adeje council are making arrangements for the third edition of “Tenerife Fashion Beach Costa Adeje” (TFBCA), an event that has already been consolidated in the framework of tourism, fashion and economic development.
C
OSTA Adeje Golf Course will host on July 19th the second edition of the Costa Adeje Sinfónico.
The concert by Tenerife Symphony Orchestra will be outdoors and will feature two world-renowned tenors and a well-known Mexican director . It is a lyric gala specially designed for an outdoor stage located in the heart of one of the most important tourist towns in Europe. Both Adeje council and the producers of the show say the concert is aimed at all audiences. The programme has been carefully chosen and interpreted by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, which in this edition will feature the outstanding performance of two of the most important tenors of the moment: Celso Albelo (Tenerife) and Javier Camarena (Mexico), all under the direction of the teacher Iván Lopez Reynoso (Mexico). This line-up places the second classic event in the south of Tenerife among the most important and highest-level cultural events in the Canary Islands, intending to become an international reference in a short time. This second edition of Costa Adeje Sinfónico will start at 9pm on Friday, July 19,
at the Costa Adeje golf course, although the doors will open from 7.30pm so that attendees can enjoy the sunset in a enclosure completely conditioned for the occasion with points of refreshments with local products that can be enjoyed in an area enabled for picnics. The new edition of this event will take place in the southern municipality between October 14th and 20th. To do this, the island’s socioeconomic vice president, Efraín Medina, and councillor for tourism of Adeje, Ermitas Moreira recently met with some of the organisers of this event. Efraín Medina said that “both the Cabildo and the council have not stopped working, hand in hand with the organisers, since the end of the last edition, so that this year the event continues to grow and incorporate different novelties with the aim of consolidating this meeting as an opportunity for business and promotion of the island.” In addition, Efraín Medina recalled that companies interested in making their products known in the different catwalks can register until
September 1st. It is also planned to promote environmental awareness in this important showcase through respect and care for our coast and our beaches. “Tenerife Fashion Beach Costa Adeje” has become a benchmark for the latest trends in the fashion industr y specialising in bathing and a meeting point for experts in the field at an international level. Companies interested in participating in the different parades can consult the bases on the website of Tenerife Fashion Beach (https:// www.tenerifefashionbeachcostaadeje.com). What to do about food Preventing poisoning insect bites and stings
F
OOD poisoning is rarely serious and usually gets better within a week. You can normally treat yourself or your child at home.
Symptoms of food poisoning include feeling sick (nausea), diarrhoea, being sick (vomiting), stomach cramps, a high temperature of 38C or above and feeling generally unwell, such as being tired or having aches and chills The symptoms usually start within a few days of eating the food that caused the infection. Sometimes they start after a few hours or not for a few weeks. You can usually treat yourself or your child at home. The symptoms usually pass within a week. Stay off school or work until the symptoms have stopped
for two days. This is when you’re most infectious. How you get food poisoning You can catch food poisoning if you eat something that has been contaminated with germs. This can happen if food: Isn’t cooked or reheated thoroughly Isn’t stored correctly – for example, it’s not been frozen or chilled Is left out for too long Is handled by someone who’s ill or hasn’t washed their hands Is eaten after its “use by” date Any type of food can cause food poisoning.
What is a magnesium test?
A
BLOOD SAMPLE
magnesium test is used to measure the amount of magnesium in your blood.
This is a metallic element mainly found in the bones and is essential to life. Abnormal magnesium levels can occur in conditions that affect the functioning of your kidneys or intestines. A test may be recommended as part of a series of tests if you have symptoms such as nausea, weakness or cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). A blood sample taken from a vein in your arm. You may have abnormal levels of magnesium, calcium or potassium in your blood which can then be treated.
T
HERE are some simple precautions you can take to reduce your risk of being bitten or stung by insects.
For example, you should: Remain calm and move away slowly if you encounter wasps, hornets or bees – don’t wave your arms around or swat at them. Cover exposed skin by wearing long sleeves and trousers. Wear shoes when outdoors. Apply insect repellent to exposed skin – repellents that contain 50% DEET (diethyltoluamide) are most effective. Avoid using products with strong perfumes, such as soaps, shampoos and deodorants – these can attract insects. Be careful around flowering plants, rubbish, compost, stagnant water, and in outdoor areas where food is served. You may need to take extra precautions if you’re travelling to part of the world where there’s a risk of serious illnesses. For example, you may be advised to take antimalarial tablets to help prevent malaria.

SPECIAL OFFER FROM ARTEDENTAL
Yellow or stained teeth? Whitening could be the solution you are looking for D O you know what dental treatment usually leads the list of the most requested? Teeth whitening, especially in summer. In fact, the treatments that lead the list of the most demanded by patients are those related to dental aesthetics and not hygiene.
MouthHealthy.org, the dental guide for patients of the American Dental Association, explains on its website that when the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistr y asked users what they would improve their smile, the majority response was “whiter teeth.” On the other hand, the American Association of Orthodontists has confirmed that 90% of patients demand tooth whitening at the dentist. If you are a habitual resident in the United Kingdom, you should be made aware that the British National Health Service, NHS, does not cover this service unless it is necessar y for health reasons. More specifically, they explain that “you can only have your teeth whitened on the NHS if there is a medical reason for it. For example, this might be to lighten teeth that have discoloured because the nerve has died. Otherwise, teeth whitening by a dentist or other dental professional can only be done privately because it is considered to be a cosmetic treatment. Costs vary and laser whitening is more expensive than professional bleaching.” As they explain, the option in the case of an aesthetic treatment will be to go to a private clinic. The average price in the UK ranges from 310 to 580 pounds, depending on the procedure; while the average price in Spain ranges from 100 to 400 euros.
What is tooth whitening? According to the NHS, “teeth whitening involves bleaching your teeth to make them lighter. It cannot make your teeth brilliant white, but it can lighten the existing colour by several shades “; and MouthHealthy adds: “Whitening products contain one of two tooth bleaches (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). These bleaches break stains into
smaller pieces, which makes the colour less concentrated and your teeth brighter .” The fact that it is such a demanding treatment has led to the appearance of a huge variety of remedies to do it from home, and therefore specialists like the NHS warn that the “teeth whitening is a form of dentistry and should only be carried out by a dentist or another regulated dental professional, such as a dental hygienist or dental therapist, on the prescription of a dentist. Some beauty salons offer teeth whitening, but this is illegal if there is no dental professional present, and it may be your oral health at risk. You can also buy DIY home teeth whitening kits but these may also carry risks”. But what are those risks that the NHS talks about? Artedental clinic, located in Puerto de la Cr uz, has launched this summer a dental cleaning offer (60 euros) with free dental whitening. All a bargain if you take into account that the price of whitening they are offering is 120 euros. Its specialists tell us the risks of the practice of whitening at home or in non-specialised places.
“On the one hand, we risk that the products used do not contain the necessary amou-
nt of bleaching products, but even worse is that the splints do not fit in the mouth, and
therefore the effect of the bleaches affects the gums or the interior from the mouth,
causing abrasion and sensitivity, “says Víctor Cubillo, director of Artedental.

Planning starts Real Madrid goalie is special for 2019 Santa visitor to Loro Parque Cruz Extreme
L
ORO Parque, recognised as the best zoo in the world according to TripAdvisor, was thrilled to receive a visit from Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
T
HE city council is to enhance the quality and sustainability of the 2019 “Santa Cruz Extreme”.
The sports and security departments are coordinating their resources for the next edition of this event to be held on October 19th in Anaga. Councillor for security, Florentino Guzmán held a coordination meeting with Civil Protection technicians, representatives of the Santa Cruz Sustainable Foundation and the sports commission that organises the Santa Cruz Extreme race. The next edition of this test will take place on the usual route of the different distances, although with significant variations and improvements. “Our goal is for Santa Cruz Extreme to be claimed as one of the most important mountain trials in Tenerife, in all aspects, from the safety device, to its social and economic impact, “ Sr. Guzman explained.
But he stressed that the growth of the race “must be matched by criteria of sustainability and care for the environment” as well as a zero-plastic approach. The next edition, in which some 400 athletes are already registered, will bring important changes for the organisation. In principle the finish area of the race will return to the downtown area of the city, in the vicinity of the Plaza de España and Francisco la Roche Avenue, where it also aims to create entertainment areas and activities that citizens can enjoy. This revitalisation of the Santa Cruz Extreme also adds, in addition to its usual routes of 15, 26 and 49 kilometres by Anaga, a time trial in which the wheelchair joëlette will be used.
He and his family enjoyed a holiday in Tenerife discovering the wonders of the animal world and the entertaining educational presentations of Loro Parque. Also, during his visit, the Belgian goalkeeper has learned first-hand about the important conservation work that is carried out every day in the Park. In this sense, although this is not the first time that the renowned player has visited the facilities of Loro Parque, he did not want to say goodbye without first dedicating a few words in the Golden Book, in which he affirmed to spending a “great day” together with his family in the facilities of this authentic animal embassy. The family crowned their visit with lunch at Brunelli’s steakhouse, located in front of the Park: the ideal place to enjoy a tender, delicious and incomparable flavour thanks to its elaboration in a unique oven in the islands, which is heated to more than 800 degrees. In addition, wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean guaranteed an unforgettable dining experience. The Real Madrid goalkeeper has used his days in Tenerife to also enjoy, as a family, the facilities of the best water park in the world, Siam Park, and share their great experiences through social networks.
Women’s soccer takes Adeje by storm as well
SECOND TOURNAMENT
W
OMEN’S football, which has taken the nation by storm thanks to the recent World Cup, is now on its way to south Tenerife.
The second edition of the Costa Adeje Cup Women’s Football Tournament will take place on July 19th and 20th. The draw is as follows: Group A: first match between C.F Lanzarote and U.D Moneyba, second match between the U.D. Tacuense and the R.C.D Nueva Sevilla
and the third match for the players of A.T. Perdona against Gomera F.C. In Group B, the first match will be played between C.F. Costa Adeje and A.T Valle, the second match will be between Santa Sur F.C and C.D. Virgen del Rocío, and finally C.D. Firgas against Blue Team United.
Adeje councillor Adolfo Alonso said: “This is one more opportunity to make women’s sport visible. There is a lot of talent that we should recognise and this is a good opportunity to do so. This initiative is in addition to many others that we develop from the council on gender equality, in this case linked to sport. “ The tournament will start on Thursday, July 18th with the presence of all teams and the
delivery of credentials at 5pm at Siam Mall but matches will begin on Friday, July 19th and Saturday, July 20th throughout the day. Each team will play between four or five matches with a duration of 30 minutes for each football 7 game. In the Canary Islands, there are a large number of women’s teams of different sports and Tenerife has a high number of women dedicated to sport as well as amateur and federated.

It’s party time as La Orotava Indoor football is firm favourite hosts 8km night race
ULY 20th will see the return in La Orotava of the great party of sport, with the 8km night race in the historic centre.
The presentation of this sporting event, which celebrates its ninth edition, took place at the council offices with the Mayor Francisco Linares being joined by sports councillor, Antonio Lima, and the head of the organising entity Maskmororun, Marcos Hernández Guardia. It was also attended by representatives of sponsoring companies such as Josu Gabancho de Vitaldent and Tomás González, director of medical services at Hospiten. Sr. Linares said the race helps to promote the local heritage of the town and boosts the local economy, since the test attracts numerous members of the public. Likewise, he valued the involvement of public administrations and private companies to make this initiative possible. Antonio Lima said the test is a unique project in the Canary Islands as it fuses culture, heritage, sports, education and tourism. In addition, it is a pioneer test for its special characteristics and for promoting equality and integration in a space that already presents

difficulties due to the orography itself and to be developed during night time. This sporting event is thus the only race in Spain that gives prominence to the adapted sport with the profile of steep climbs and descents that characterise La Orotava. It is a sports race for all people who simply wish to enjoy a unique test in a unique environment and with a totally dedicated audience. The race is expected to exceed 600 runners and has the motto
“Run for Equality”. Although the test is nocturnal, it will begin at 4pm with multiple and dynamic complementary activities. At 7pm, there will be the V Mini Children’s Race 8KM Hospiten La Orotava, with distances between 300 and 900 metres. The race is not competitive but to-tally supportive for the entity Crevo (Center for Rehabilitation and Stimulation of the Valley of La Orotava). The 8km will start at 10pm. The route is
eight kilometres, with two laps of four kilometres. The riders will receive a bag with equipment, and during the race they will enjoy a large supply of supplies. The Andalusian solidarity association, Carros de Fuego, will be present at the event. This is a non-profit association based in Seville whose tools for social inclusion are leisure and sports. It wanted to be present to give greater visibility to inclusive sport .
The event is celebrating its sixth edition and is organised by CD Charcay in collaboration with the local council’s department of sports. It began on July 1st and continues until July 26th, involving 60 young people aged between six and 15. The initiative, under the coordination of José Diego García and the monitors Julio Pineda, Luis Casanova and Aythami Alberto, is developed in the morning and by categories, according to their ages: prebenjamín, benjamín, alevín and infantil, working on technique and theory. Among the main figures of this sport are Jacinto Delgado and representatives of indoor soccer clubs on the island. In addition, this year will be assisted by first-level coaches such as Alfonso Brito, Ruymán Cabello and Paco Álamo, among others. Mayor Marcos González, who visited the participants, said this campus is already a must in the sports summer of the municipality. The initiative allowed children to enjoy this sport in their leisure time, while they coexist with other companions and learn values such as camaraderie, union and motivation.
Get involved with sport this summer, says Arona council
A
RONA is offering a summer of sporting activities aimed at all age groups from the youngest to adults and the elderly. The local council, through its sports department, wants to give everyone the chance to occupy their leisure time in the best way possible.
July sees the start of swimming courses, swimming for babies, polidivertido, padel tennis and golf. There will also be games on the beach, mini sailing courses, kayak and Paddle Sup, plus many other activities. The activity of polidivertido, a mobile activity programme, has been very well received in previous years. That is why for this summer specialised monitors in leisure activities and sports will be distributed throughout the municipality, where children can enjoy an outdoor sports offer free of charge. The hours of this activity are divided, according to the zone, in the morning, from 10am to noon or in the afternoon from 6pm to 8pm. Buzanada, San Lorenzo Valley, Las Galletas, Virgen del Carmen, Guaza, Las Rosas, Cabo Blanco, El Fraile, Guargacho, La Camella, Arona and Parque La Reina are the areas where this activity will take place until the end of the month of August. Another activity that is in great demand are the activities of the sailing school, where mini week-long courses are offered, Paddle Sup, sailing and kayak. These activities are developed in the sailing school located on the beach of Los Cristianos and have as their objective the initiation and promotion of these activities, being able, once finished, to enroll in the annual courses of improvement. The offer is completed with golf courses aimed at the whole family at the Los Palos Golf Centre, tennis courses, therapeutic swimming, aquatic fitness, physical activities for adults, adapted sports or Padel courses where those enrolled will begin in the basic technique of their chosen sport.
The Spanish ‘Modelo 720’ Worldwide Asset Declaration form is a headache for expats with offshore wealth
Screenshot of the Spanish tax office Form 720 online guide
U
NLESS the EU puts a stop to it, or unless you have at least €1m in liquid assets that open up investment strategies to avoid it, the Spanish ‘Worldwide Asset Declaration Form’, known locally as ‘Modelo 720’, is a serious problem for Spanish-resident expats with offshore assets worth €50,000 or more that have to be declared to the Spanish tax authorities in a process that is fraught with risks and ruinous penalties.
Though not a problem for non-residents buying second-homes in Spain, it’s a reason for expats with less than €1m in liquid assets to think twice before investing in a home that the Spanish taxman can embargo in the event of problems with the Modelo 720. With its impractical reporting requirements, and crippling fines for even innocent mistakes, the Modelo 720 leaves you at the mercy of the imperious Spanish tax authorities even if you act in good faith. “All on its own merit, in recent years the Modelo 720 has become the terror of taxpayers with assets abroad,” comments Spanish lawyer José María Salcedo, who specialises in pursuing appeals against the tax authorities. Even Spanish courts are starting to rule that the Modelo 720 penalties are out of all proportion. I suspect that the 720 Form’s onerous reporting requirements, and extortionate penalties, put many foreigners off relocating to Spain, leaving the country poorer for it. Introduced back in 2012 in the depths of the economic crisis by Treasury Minister Cristóbal Montoro from the People’s Party, the Modelo 720 was supposed to be, in the words of Montoro, a “carrot and stick to regulate the submerged economy,” but it turned out to be all stick to beat innocent expats more than corrupt Spanish politicians like many of Montoro’s buddies from the PP. The aggressive way it is designed to punish offshore wealth hits expats the hardest, as few Spaniards have wealth to the tune of €50,000 or more outside of Spain, whilst tens of thousands or more of expats do. So the Modelo 720 looks suspiciously like a cynical trap designed by the Spanish tax authorities to relive expats retirees of some of the wealth they built up during a lifetime working and saving outside of Spain. That said, I don’t think it’s a cynical trap, I think it’s just very badly designed tax law, as is often the case with Spanish tax regulations. Your Spanish home is the first thing the tax inspector will
embargo if you trip over the Modelo 720 At least in theory your Spanish home is the first asset the tax inspector will embargo whilst pursuing you for ruinous fines if you fall foul of the Modelo 720. So even if you decide to move to Spain for the unbeatable quality of life, the Modelo 720 should make you wary of putting wealth into Spanish property, where it is within easy grasp of the high-handed Spanish tax authorities. At the very least, the Modelo 720 gives you a reason to think twice before investing in Spanish real estate, which you can’t move offshore in the event of trouble with Spain’s 720 Worldwide Asset Declaration obligation. As an expat in Spain, perhaps renting is a better option if you have wealth offshore. If, on the other hand, you have €1m or more in liquid assets, then investment strategies become viable that allow you to avoid the Modelo 720 problem altogether. As usual it’s the average expat with a bit of wealth back home, rather than the wealthy expat with lots of wealth outside of Spain, who is most at risk from the Spanish Modelo 720 Worldwide Asset Declaration threat. ‘Modelo 720’ Worldwide Asset Declaration form under pressure from Europe Even though the Modelo 720 gives Spain a bad reputation abroad, and probably reduces tax revenues at home, the current Spanish Government shows no signs of scrapping it, because on the surface that would look like going soft on wealthy tax cheats hiding their assets abroad, or at least that’s the way the hard-left Podemos party the Socialists need to support them would see it. But at least the EU is showing an interest in putting Spain under pressure to do something about it. The European Commission is taking Spain to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) over the Modelo 720 for being disproportionate and discriminatory, and for infringing fundamental liberties of the EU. So far Spain has ignored all advice from Europe to reform the Modelo 720, and now it will have to go to the ECJ to defend it. That might lead to improvements in the next few years. Investment solution that gets round the Modelo 720 problem There is an investment solution that allows expats living in Spain to invest any amount offshore without having to declare those investments in the 720 form. The solution I have found also comes with extra, additional tax breaks that make the solution hard to beat from a fiscal point of view. However, the setup and running cost of this investment vehicle only make sense for people with €1m or more of liquid assets to invest. Get in touch here if you live in or plan to move to Spain and want to know more.
