SIAM PARK MAKES IT NEW AN HISTORIC SIX! PRESIDENT S FOR TENERIFE IAM Park in Costa Adeje really is unrivalled! The water kingdom has just been chosen as the world’s best water park for the sixth time in a row!
The TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice award is the latest recognition in a long list of accolades recognising the success of its management, based on a perfect equation between quality, innovation and excellence. The Loro Parque Company, to which this theme park of water attractions belongs and which has more than 3,000,000 annual visitors, has highlighted the special honour of this recognition, granted by the Park’s visitors and users of the portal of TripAdvisor trips, thanks to their independent opinions based on their experiences. Blanca Zayas, responsible for Communication of TripAdvisor Spain, said they are “especially proud that it is a Spanish concern which occupies the first place in the
ranking of water parks worldwide and that, in addition, does so for the sixth consecutive year.” She added: “Positioning itself as number one for so many years in a row represents a seal of quality recognised by users from all over the world and that, without a doubt, will open more
doors to both national and international tourism”. Recently Travelcircus, a prestigious German web platform specialising in premium travel experiences, awarded Siam Park the prestigious “Best Water Park in Europe” award. This recognition joins the
European Star Award, with which Siam Park was awarded in 2018, and for the seventh consecutive year, as the “Best Water Park in Europe”. This distinction has been granted by the leading and leading publication in the valuation of theme parks, Kirmes & Park Revue.

EDRO Manuel Martín Domínguez has resigned as Mayor of Guia de Isora after 24 years in office but for a very valid reason!
He has taken over as president of Tenerife Cabildo, replacing Carlos Alonso, as the PSOE takes control from the Canary Coalition for the first time in 32 years. Sr. Martín thanked the support of his team in Guía de Isora and said he hopes that his new position as president of the Cabildo de Tenerife will allow him to work for a better island and for better connected regions “without of course forgetting the municipality where I was born. ”
Security pledge as CCTV back on cards for Veronica’s
A
string of violent incidents in the Veronica’s area of Playa de las Americas has once again opened debate about the security, image and even continuation of the popular party strip in south Tenerife. The zone has, generally speaking, been out of the local, national and even international news in recent years, unlike its “counterpart” in Mallorca ie the Punta Ballena bars and clubs in Magaluf where there are daily reports of trouble. But over the last few weeks,
Las Veronica’s or Veronica’s Strip as it is also known HAS been in the spotlight, with reports of fights, assaults, thefts and drug trafficking. Arona council says it is aware of the situation and intends to take action, including the installation of CCTV
cameras and more police. In an interview with Diario de Avisos, security councillor Franciso Marichal was asked: “Recently, some businessmen have reiterated their demand for camcorders to be installed in the area of Las Verónica’s, a project that seemed to be aimed for during the past council term, after several meetings with the Subdelegation and the Government Delegation, but hasn’t come to fruition. Are you going to
resume?” His answer was: “Of course, this is another bet of the mayor, José Julián Mena, in terms of security. We have this project on the table and work to develop it as soon as possible. We have the necessary studies and we have separated the areas with analysis and characteristics of the cameras to be located. In total, the installation of 20 fixed cameras and four retractable bollards is planned, which will keep the
area more controlled, which will also guarantee more security. ” Las Veronica’s is the only “party strip” left in the south of Tenerife and though it is still hugely popular, some question whether it is still “relevant” in today’s tourism age when holidaymakers are looking for a different kind of attraction. Incidents over the last few weeks included an assault in a club in Las Verónicas. National Police arrested a young
Moroccan, aged 25, with several police records, for causing injury. He was caught trying to steal the victim’s phone but retaliated by smashing a glass into the man’s face. It fractured, sending shards into his eye. The man was rushed to hospital but his eye could not be saved.

Continued from page 1 There was also a fight which saw one of the men involved shouting that he was a boxer and martial arts expert. The man, aged 19 and of English nationality, was arrested for punching another man in the area, fracturing his nose. Routine drug controls also saw the arrest of a 23-year-old man for trafficking ecstasy and cocaine. And in another shocking incident, a 17-year-old British girl went to the police after a Moroccan man, aged 43, tried to sexually assault her near a club in Veronica’s. He was later arrested. Spanish newspapers have also published several videos of late showing fights inside premises along the strip. Arona council has assured that security for its tourists and residents continues to be a top priority.
Tweeting alerts guards to birds in suitcases T AIRPORT DISCOVERY
HE sound of birds tweeting from two suitcases at Tenerife’s north airport led to a rather unusual discovery! For when custom officers inspected the luggage, they found 68 birds inside, 21 of them protected species and several of them dead. They were inside cages covered by raw spaghetti. A 35-year-old man was arrested. He is of Colombian nationality and faces prosecution for a crime against wildlife by trafficking in protected species and a second of animal abuse. The discovery was made early in the morning of July 17th when the agents on duty at the airport detected sounds that seemed like trills and bird songs from two suitcases located in the baggage loading area. The owner was traced to the passenger boarding area where he was waiting to catch an international flight. Once the suitcases were opened, it was found that there were eleven rudimentary metal
mesh cages hidden among raw spaghetti to hinder their detection and mask noises and odours. Agents found a total of 68 birds between parakeets and “lovebirds” and other exotic bird species, including 21 of protected species in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. The Civil Guard said 47 of the birds located in the suitcases are freely available but the detainee lacked documentation proving their origin.
FAMILY APPEAL
New-look pledged for Arona’s central leisure area
T
HE centre of Arona town will have a complete renovation of the leisure area located on calle Domingo Afonso after the specifications were approved in the Governing Board. The municipality can thus tender the work with a budget of 190,000 euros and four months for its execution. The remodelling of the space will include specific areas that include an exercise circuit for the elderly and a children’s area with shadow spaces, in addition to landscaped points. The project falls within the framework #AronaAvanza to improve public spaces. The Mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, said: “ We continue taking firm steps to ensure the progress and modernisation of our municipality.” Councillor for works, Leopoldo Díaz, stressed that “in this second term, we continue to fulfill the commitment to provide citizens with adequate
public spaces adapted to the new times” adding that “this park will determine a renovated leisure area in the historic centre of Arona, which residents can enjoy as a family.”
Due to the inadequate conditions in which they were
kept, crammed into the suitcases, several had died.
More pedestrianisation in Guia de Isora
P
EOPLE who visit the old centre of Guia de Isora can do so on foot with complete tranquility through the streets of Arriba, Abajo, Sor Larai and El Mentidero.
Vehicle access to these streets is restricted exclusively to garage owners and residents (except for a section open to traffic to Sor Larai). Councillor of urbanism and accessibility, Eduardo González officially received the work by the municipal cooperation area of the Cabildo de Tenerife. “Despite the inconvenience generated to residents and businesspeople, we are sure that the result of this work will increase commercial revitalisation, betting heavily on pedestrianisation,” he said. Sr. González adds that this action “is part of a much broader project which seeks to create a new model of urban space, improving one of the most important points of the centre of Guia de Isora, listed as BIC since 2008.” The works carried out include the execution of a new rainwater network that will drain into two points of the Barranco del Valo (or Barranco de Guía), for which the collectors have been extended along the streets of El Mentidero, Sor Larai, Guicios and a section of the Isora Avenue car park (TF-82).

tragic accident on the south motorway near Arico saw a woman drive in the wrong direction and crash into the front of an oncoming
Police are investigating exactly what happened but the woman who died was aged 64 and came from Candelaria. The accident happened at 1.50am on July 26th on the TF -1 at kilometre point 45, southbound, at the height of the municipality of Arico. “At the time indicated above, the Emergency and Security Coordinating Centre (CECOES) 1-1-2 of the Canary Islands Government received an alert informing of a frontal collision on the TF-1, at the height of the municipality of Arico , when one of the vehicles involved was travelling in the opposite direction,” said a 112 spokesman. “1-1-2 immediately activated the necessar y emergency resources. The SUC mobilized four ambulances, two medicalised, one sanitary and another basic life support,
whose staff assisted those affected by transferring them to the aforementioned hospital centres. Firefighters helped resolve the incident.” The woman was declared dead at the scene. Two men who were travelling in the other car were seriously injured. Both suffered severe trauma and were rushed to the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria. Police are investigating at what point the offending car came onto the motorway and why it joined in the wrong direction. The incdent was also attended by firefighters from the Tenerife Consortium of the San Miguel de Abona Park, agents of the Civil Guard of Traffic of the Granadilla detachment and operators of the road maintenance service.
U
NIONS are once again calling for greater security measures after a staff were attacked in a Tenerife hospital.
They say such assaults happen frequently and want employees to have more training in self-defence and for guards to possibly carry some sort of automated protection, such as a stun gun. The latest incident happened in the middle of the afternoon in the University Hospital of the Canary Islands in Santa Cruz. Three people, including a nurse, were assaulted on the second floor of the HUC psychiatry department. The culprit is believed to be the same man who attacked a Civil Guard in La Matanza de Acentejo with a machete. Since then, he has been in the hospital’s psychiatry unit. A nursing assistant was able to raise the alarm when the patient started to hit him. Two employees of the private security company came to the room and found the man hanging on the bars of the balcony whilst shouting. When the guards managed to get him back in the room, the patient inflicted several blows on one of them, causing bruising and a cut lip. The other was poked in the eye and had to have surgery the next day due to a tear. All three lodged a formal complaint at La Laguna police station. The patient has since appeared before a court and was remanded in custody. Following the case of La Matanza, the Unified Civil Guard Association (AUGC) requested that agents have training and static control devices or electric guns to act in this type of situation.

Santa Cruz vetoes private medical insurance for councillors
C
OUNCILLORS in Santa Cruz will no longer be entitled to free private medical insurance.
The ordinary plenary session of the city council endorsed the elimination of private medical insurance to which the councillors were entitled from the moment of their inauguration. The motion, presented by Unidas Podemos (UP), was approved with the votes in favour of the proposing party, the government team composed of the Partido Socialista (PSOE) and Ciudadanos, while Canary Coalition (CC) and the Popular Party (PP ) abstained. As spokesman for the Government group, councillor for community welfare and
public services, José Ángel Martín, said the PSOE already rejected the use of private medical insurance in 2011. “If we want private insurance, we pay it, as the rest of the citizens do,” said Sr. Martin, who clarified that in the case of municipal officials, medical insurance is part of collective bargaining agreements with unions. Regarding other expenses such as official cars, he said the council had two cars with driver for all councillors for trips to activities of their own department and not only for those of the government team.

Summer parking relief for Alcala visitors
A
LCALÁ is to get more than 200 new parking spaces.
The local council has rented a plot attached to the existing one in front of the Paseo de La Jaquita which came into operation on July 26th. The land is attached to the Melia Palacio de Isora hotel. According to the acting mayor, Josefa Mesa “it is a necessary measure especially in the face of summer, at which time Alcalá receives numerous visitors who can now also park for free near the coast.” This car park joins the existing plot in Alcalá and other public and free parking spaces in Chío, Playa San Juan, Cueva del Polvo and Varadero. New parking lots are also planned in the Guia de Isora areas of El Jaral and Guía helmet (El Pilón).
SUSTAINABILITY FAME?
Put your faith in protecting the environment, says hotel association
H
OTELIERS in the Canaries want to put the archipelago on the map by creating an international reputation for sustainability.
The hotel association of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro say this would be a key tourism selling point for both the destination and accommodation. “Being the first destination that can certify that its hotels only consume clean energy would have much more impact than any marketing campaign,” says Ashotel president, Jorge Marichal. As one of the first carbon footprint compensation initiatives, Ashotel is already working on a project for the installation of a photovoltaic plant in Tenerife that supplies clean energy to as many hotels as possible. The idea is to gradually replace dependence on fossil energy and reduce the carbon footprint. The project is looking for a suitable location with adequate reception capacity for an installation with 50 megawatts power to cover an important part of the electrical needs and replace the consumption of fossil fuels, thus increasing the energy efficiency of a notable group of establishments. This model would then need to be replicated, even with other renewable sources, to finally cover the electricity needs of the whole of the housing plant. It is an initiative that is part of a broader strategy with a view to 2030 and designed on five axes: energy, water, waste, local product consumption and sustainable mobility. The specific objective for this year
is to reduce energy consumption, water and waste generation by 20% and raise local product consumption by up to 20%, as well as increase the use of the systems of collective transport and shared vehicles by 20%. Ashotel admits they are “brave” objectives for the sector but all must commit: tour operators, governments and companies. Jorge Marichal referred to the Nordic market trend, which falls, among other issues due to the Greta phenomenon and the so-called flysgkam or
‘shame of flying’. “We have to be pioneers, be brave and take a step forward, by certifying our hotels to compensate to the maximum that carbon footprint generated by the planes that bring us customers,” added the president of Ashotel. Vice president of Ashotel in the north of Tenerife, Enrique Talg, commented that in Puerto de la Cruz “we have done our homework” and highlighted the project in which Ashotel is involved for better waste management. He also announced that the
Puerto de la Cruz Rehabilitation Consortium will launch a second Improvement and Modernisation Plan (PMM), with 80 actions; and applauded the future reopening of the emblematic 1890 Taoro hotel after the contest won by a hotel chain for its renovation. The group also believes another key to the evolution of the offer of accommodation in Tenerife is to continue betting on renovation - between 2017 and 2020, 60 establishments, 28,000 beds will have been renewed and re-qualified, according to Tenerife Tourism data.
Santiago del Teide sees completion of street remodelling BETTER SERVICES
I
MPROVEMENT works have brought a new look to calle José González
González in Santiago del Teide.
Tenerife Cabildo has completed improvements and adaptations which have led to the reorganisation of the road to help both pedestrians and traffic. The budget, which has had an execution period of nine and a half months, has exceeded 820,000 euros. The finance has been met 90 percent by the Cabildo and ten percent by the council. Calle José González González is located on the second line of the sea and is parallel to Avenida Marítima, in the nucleus of Puerto Santiago. It has a length of 190 metres and is bounded to the north with calle Caleta de Jurado and to the south with avendia Antonio González Barrios. The total area of the work surface, between the street and the park, is approximately 4,300 square metres. The project has included wider pavements, better accessibility, redistribution of parking spaces, new street furniture and lighting.

Devastation as spectator, 72, Sunbed killed during La Laguna rally clampdown on Ajabo beach
T
HERE was devastation and despair when the highly-popular La Laguna motor rally ended in disaster.
At the end of the sixth timed test, one of the cars was involved in an accident and was in collision with three spectators, one of whom suffered such serious injuries that he was declared dead at the scene.
He was aged 72 and lived in Agua Dulce which is within the Los Silos municipality in the north of Tenerife. He is understood to be Spanish. A full investigation is underway to determine exactly what happened but
there are unconfirmed reports that the man died a hero, pushing other people out of the way as he spotted the rally car coming towards them. The sequence of events has not yet been made public but the investigation will be looking at all aspects, including where people were standing, whether they were in an authorised place, why the vehicle left the track etc. The two other spectators escaped serious injury and were treated by medics on the roadside. La Laguna’s annual rally is always a much anticipated sporting event in Tenerife’s calendar and there was much excitement when the organisers announced all the details a few weeks ago. The accident happened on Saturday, July 20th at at around 3.30pm on the TF-226 road which runs from La Esperanza to Tacoronte. It is understood the car involved had crossed the finishing line when it continued along the road and for some reason crashed through a brick wall near or on a bend. Health personnel rushed to help the three injured spectators but there was nothing they could do to save the 72-year-old’s life. It was a witness who told a Spanish newspaper that he had seen the man push others out of the way. As usual in these cases, agents of the Local Police of Tacoronte sealed the place of the fatal accident until the arrival of Civil Guard agents who are responsible for investigating the incident. The report prepared will be sent to the relevant judicial authority. La Laguna council took to Twitter to express its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, adding it was also sad news for Canary sport. The event organiser also
posted a message on the social networks, saying: “The organising committee of the VI Rallye City of La Laguna regrets to announce that the test has been suspended after an accident after the finish of the sixth section with the result of a deceased spectator. Our most sincere condolences to the family.” In all previous editions, there had been no such incidents. The last record of a fatal event in a rally in Tenerife was five years ago in the VI edition of the Ascent to Tabares Valley when a 23-year-old photographer suffered fatal injuries.
A
DEJE council has been clamping down on the illegal rental of sunbeds on Callao Salvaje beach.
Officials recently removed the hammocks located on the beach of Ajabo. The intervention took place after members of the Local Police of Adeje detected that workers used tickets to charge 4 euros to each person who used a hammock. This action could not be carried out as the municipal administration had withdrawn the concession from the company that obtained it several months ago. Municipal agents reportedly identified two different people throughout this month who were engaged in the irregular rental of sun loungers and confiscated their tickets. On one of the occasions, the municipal agents forced a worker to return to each user of the hammocks the amount charged.
BERLIN PRIDE
Canaries relay gay friendly message in Germany
T
HE Canary Islands are being promoted as a gay friendly destination. Tourism chiefs were present at the recent CSD Berlin Pride held in the German capital and attended by more than 800,000 people. This event, in addition to the high participation of the LGTB collective, also has a wide media impact, making it an interesting showcase for the Canar y Islands as a gayfriendly destination. Minister of Tourism, Industr y and Commerce, Yaiza Castilla said: “The Canary Islands is an attractive destination for those tourists whose main motivation is to enjoy their vacations, in a place that offers multiple attractions that we have in the islands
where, in addition of the good weather and a wide complementary offer. This action, within the framework of the Berlin Pride, allows us to transmit an image of an inclusive destination, as a competitive and qualitative advantage, against competing destinations in the eastern Mediterranean. ” The presence of the
Canary Islands in the Berlin Pride responds to the objective of customer diversification set in the marketing plan, in a key market for the islands such as Germany. The LGTB segment relies on a specific communication platform aimed at this group, www.sacatusvacacionesdelarmario.com, which includes materials and content of interest.

Cocaine gang planned to smuggle drugs in coffee beans National Police people have arrested in Gran Canaria an Italian justice fugitive related to drug trafficking

HE man was one of the most active members of a criminal organisation that distributed poor quality cocaine and that, in addition, was assembling the necessary infrastructure to distribute drugs, hidden in packages of coffee beans, throughout Europe.
Man caught peddling drugs
P
OLICE have been investigating a terrible accident in the south of Tenerife which left one mother dead and two other people seriously injured.
For some reason, a lorry which had been travelling down the TF-1 in the direction of Santa Cruz careered out of control, crossed the central reservation and collided with oncoming vehicles. The accident happened on the motorway near Fanabe. The woman who died was driving one of the cars and was trapped in the wreckage. She was released by fire crews but had suffered fatal injuries. Her child, aged 12, was also in the car and suffered a serious leg fracture. Another driver was also seriously hurt. The man, aged 30, also sufffered a broken leg. The accident prompted a full-scale emergency and caused severe traffic jams.
D
RUG controls in Playa de las Américas led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man for trafficking ecstasy and cocaine. Police said the man had previous convictions and was caught in Las Veronicas. The man tried to run off when he spotted the officers but was caught. A search revealed he had three grams of ecstasy, nine of cocaine and 55 euros. “These controls prevent the sale and consumption of narcotic drugs in the surroundings of leisure areas, such as the Las Verónicas environment,” said a police spokesman.
The detention is part of an anti-mafia operation, carried out by the Guardia Di Finanza of Messina (Sicily), which was developed simultaneously in Italy, Spain and South America and has allowed the dismantling of the organisation and the detention of eleven people. The National Police received a request for support from the Italian authorities in order to locate in Spain one of the most active members of a criminal organisation related to drug trafficking. This organisation, formed by people close to a well-known Italian mafia clan, was assembling the necessary infrastructure to distribute drugs throughout Europe,
mainly through the Netherlands, Spain and Malta. To do this, they had prepared shipments of hidden drugs in packages of coffee seeds. The Italian authorities created a device, in 2017, to follow the steps of drug delivery. This allowed them to discover who were the true recipients of it and its connections with South America, Germany, Holland and Malta. Also, as explained by the Italian judicial authorities, the investigated ones
maintained direct relations with the suppliers in South America, being a dangerous organisation that, in addition, distributed cocaine of poor quality. When the Italian authorities gave the order to make all the arrests, the agents arrested the fugitive in the Colorado Golf de Maspalomas Urbanisation. The latter had a European Detention and Deliver y Order filed by the Italian authorities for crimes of criminal organization and drug trafficking.

To this end, the Insular Government Council has approved the granting of aid for the start-up of 11 power points distributed throughout the island, which involves a total investment of 413,428 euros. This was announced at a press conference by the island director of mobility and development, Miguel Becerra. Miguel Becerra stressed that this measure is part of a plan promoted by the Cabildo to promote electric mobility and allow vehicles to circulate throughout the island and have charging points throughout the insular territory insular. In addition, he stressed that, in order to guarantee the effectiveness of this action, it is essential, on the one hand,

Also, the insular director said that another comple-
mentary measure that should continue to progress is in the provision of charging points in homes and neighbouring communities to promote the increase in the fleet of electric vehicles. Finally, he valued the measure set by the Government of the Canary Islands last May to reduce the IGIC in the acquisition of electric and hybrid cars.

IREFIGHTERS from San Miguel de Abona and Adeje volunteers were called out to deal with a fire in an abandoned area of the Center Comercial Bahía on Juan Carlos I Avenue in Los Cristianos.
Once at the scene, firefighters observed a column of black smoke at the top of the building. They went up to the roof, where there was a lot of household goods and accumulated garbage, and found that the smoke was coming from inside one of the rooms. Then they proceeded with their extinction and ventilation. Local Police officers also attended.
The intervention was part of a special operation established for the prevention and repression of the sale of drugs in the leisure areas of Santa Cruz. These operational controls considerably prevent the sale and consumption of narcotic drugs in the surroundings of leisure areas, such as the calle La Noria environment. The detainee, who initially hid while observing the police presence, tried to flee the place before being intercepted.

Police also found 5,600 euros in cash and numerous instruments for the manufacture of drugs.

ENERIFE Cabildo has awarded the project of rehabilitation and landscape improvement in the link of the Autopista del Sur (TF-1) and the Via Exterior, in the municipalities of Santa Cruz and El Rosario, for an amount of 1.7 million euros.
The contract has been won by the company Acciona Construcción SA and has an execution period of six months. The project foresees the execution of a set of actions that seeks the landscape and functional improvement of the Vía Exterior link with the TF-1, since it is a route through which numerous vehicles circulate daily. The action raises the alternation of the revegetation of the surfaces and the formation of volumes with stones of different colour tones, as well as the banks in the areas of maximum slope, which minimises the erosion
of the floors and the fall of materials to the road and green areas, therefore, improving the safety conditions of both road traffic and operators in maintenance work. At the same time, the transverse drainage of the El Pilar ravine will be improved. In addition, for the enhancement of the landscape environment, the project has opted for the alternation between the vegetation of the natural terrain through species of the area and cobblestone strips that will form figures, such as volcanoes and stars, of ocher colours and vermilion.

The previous facilities in Avenida Rafael Puig Lluvina have been remodelled and will also serve as the headquarters for Arona’a Tourist Board. Tourism councillor David Perez said the premises would also provide a venue for meetings with different professionals to plan the way ahead for the municipality. “We are preparing for the new challenge of digitising the destination, improving accessibility and delving into sustainability as a Biosphere certified destination,” he said.
A
RONA council has been clamping down on the illegal parking of cars for sale in Los Cristianos.
The authority says 50 parking spaces have been recovered as a result of the “exhaustive” operation which was carried out over a number of weeks. A spokesman confirmed: “The council, through the Local Police, has carried out a device to eradicate the street vending of vehicles on public roads, which was taking place in the municipality. This response to citizen demand has unblocked 50 parking lots, mainly in one of the busiest areas of Los Cristianos, Avenida Juan Carlos I, in front of the bus stops.” The operation included detecting the permanently parked vehicles and then locating the owners who exercised the street selling.
The council said people had been deprived of these parking spaces and in any event, it was against the regulatory ordinance of the use and occupation of the public domain which expressly prohibits the sale and promotion of vehicles in public spaces. Councillor for security, Francisco Marichal, said: “We have worked intensely, being aware of the problem that this practice entailed for both citizens and business men and women and visitors of the municipality, being able to unblock Avenida Juan Carlos I, where parking is vital.” He added: “The police action has been impeccable.” The council hopes that the removal of the cars will also improve circulation in the area.

Some history of All Saints church
V
ISITORS and regular worshippers at All Saints will know that the sanctuary area is dominated by a painting by the 19th-century English artist, Holman Hunt. It’s generally given the title “The Light of the World” although the passage of scripture that it actually depicts is from the Book of Revelation, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock”. This picture of Jesus knocking at a closed door is something I’ve known all my life. As a child I was given a postcard of it, which, largely because of its dark areas and the hint of thorns in Christ’s crown, I found pretty scary. When I went up to Oxford I was a bit disappointed when I saw the original painting in Keble College chapel. It’s small and hidden away in a corridor behind the main chapel area. So when I arrived here 15 months ago I was rather surprised by our church’s much larger version. I hadn’t known that the artist had painted the same picture again, much later in life, and the original of this big one is in St Paul’s Cathedral in London. And during the time I have been here I have had plenty of
opportunity to reflect on some of the details of this work, not least that door which can only be opened from the inside. Knocking on unopened doors is what ministry in the church is all about. When those doors are opened – when people suddenly realise that there is something for them in the good news of Jesus Christ – it’s a time to rejoice. The doors that remain firmly closed, on the other hand, are a cause for sorrow and a matter for prayer. By the time you read this I will be back in the UK to spend some time with my family, together with my lovely old dog and my little cat, hopefully by then safely imported from Tenerife. My prayer for All Saints is that there will in the future be lots of knocking on
doors, and opening of them too. Our services: Holy Communion on Sundays at 9.30 am and 11.00 am (German service at 5.00 pm, fortnightly in summer) and on Wednesdays at 10.00 am. Taizé

OR those of you who read our weekly article, you will have noticed we have posted about our dogs, but today, it is time to get to know one of our cats. Back in March of this year, this female cat, named Babe was surrendered to K9 by her owner because she had to move to a new apartment and was not allowed to have animals living there also. We are urgently looking for a forever home for this young female cat. She is one year old but is having trouble settling in at K9. She is a very friendly cat who is FELV-FIV negative but she is very stressed in our cattery. She has not settled with our other cats and one of our other cats has taken advantage and has been making her life ver y uncomfortable. As Babe is very stressed, this is having a knockon effect with our other cats, who are also becoming very stressed. When you have a lot of cats who are in stressed
state, this is not a good situation so we really need to get her a loving forever home. She would ideally be good and a lot happier if she was the only cat in the home. Currently we do have a lot of cats and kittens in our cattery and the numbers seem to growing each week which can make it even more difficult for our volunteers to make sure all our cats and kittens are ok and are comfortable. Can you help give Babe a home or know anybody that might be able to help her? This is an URGENT appeal!
Around this time of year, we always get a lot of kittens who have been abandoned, or found on the street and are brought up to our cattery. The kittens can range in age but are generally very small when they arrive to us. They also need a lot of kitten cuddles and attention so if you have spare time in the mornings, please do come up and cuddle
them. They will put a smile on your face! For our UK supporters, our online shop is up and running which delivers to the UK only, so if any of your friends back home are interested in any of our products, please make them aware! The link for the shop is www.k9tenerife.eu/ welcome-to-our-k9-shop.

Divers urged to enter La Gomera’s new underwater photography contest

A Gomera has presented the first online underwater photography contest as a new tourist reference in which the most unique underwater images of the island are rewarded. The contest opens from August 1st and aims to collect the best snapshots of the seabed, while becoming a new reference within the tourism offer, set in the strategy of diversification of tourism products, launched by the Ministry of Tourism. The insular initiative is proposed as a way to publicise the wealth of the sea, encouraging people to practice diving, along with photography. “We want this product to be another incentive to decide to come to La Gomera, meet it, and enjoy everything it offers,” said councillor María Isabel Méndez. She explained that the categories of landscape, vertebrates, invertebrates, models and compact cameras have been established, so that each of the photographers can present their images within each of these sections. As for the contest, she stressed that a presentation period will be opened during the first 20 days of the months of August, September, October and November. During the last ten days of each of these months, you can vote on the images presented on the web lagomera.travel. Hospital leads the way with elimination of single-use cutlery Health chiefs in the Canary Islands have instigated a new campaign to substantially reduce the use of plastics
T
HE University Hospital Complex of the Canary Islands (HUC), attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has implemented a series of measures to reduce and recycle single-use plastic waste. It involves the elimination of single-use plastic cutlery in the meal service of the patients of the hospitali units, as well as the internal dining room of the staff, eliminating, in this way, more than 719,000 singleuse plastic cutlery per year.
This initiative arises from the commitment of the Government of the Canary Islands, included in the resolution that establishes guidelines and urgent recommendations for the reduction and recycling of single-use plastic waste, and which has been promoted by the HUC as the entity responsible for the protection enviroment. Arrangements have also been made with La Laguna council and Ecovidrio for the removal of packaging waste
and glass waste generated by the hospital, providing containers for this purpose. This measure will begin with the management of this waste by the cafeterias and later in the hospital kitchen. The hospital centre plans to carry out training courses in waste management for workers as well as to carry out the progressive elimination of plastic utensils, replacing those items that must be of a single use by the
special conditions of the sanitary activity, by utensils of compostable / biodegradable material. The HUC will extend this initiative to different areas, units and services as well as the specialised care centres (CAEs), the external area of mental health and the Hospital of the North. It also plans to open a specific suggestion box with the objective that the centre’s workers, through the intranet, can provide suggestions.

SEVEN ARRESTS
Prohibited snake trapped in treatment plant
Police smash biggest-ever counterfeit goods gang in Canary Islands
P
OLICE in the Canaries have seized fraudulent goods worth more than 16 million euros in the biggest ever operation of its kind in the islands.
Some 200,000 counterfeit items were found inside a warehouse/workshop. They included stickers and badges of different brands, blank material and falsified products. The items, such as caps, football shirts, key-rings and bags, would have been sold to tourists in shops and bazaars throughout the Canaries. A container-truck was also intercepted which contained numerous boxes of electronic material from China. Officers swooped just as it was being unloaded near a shopping centre in the popular holiday resort of Maspalomas in Gran Canaria. Seven people have been arrested, five of them of Moroccan nationality, one of Indian origin and another from Nepal. Police say the leaders of the group made two people work long hours every day of the week to falsify the merchandise by stamping them with logos of recognised marks. A printer, dryer, heat press and two gluing plates were also seized. The operation was the largest of its kind against industrial property in the Canary Islands. The investigation began in April of this year when police became aware of the existence of a large warehouse in a commercial centre in Maspalomas. This is where the criminal group kept the electronic merchandise that arrived in trucks from the port of Las Palmas. “Two men of Moroccan nationality, both in an irregular situation in Spain, were found working in the storeroom, falsifying the merchandise,” said a police spokesman. “With hardly any ventilation, and forced to work every day of the week, they spent long hours inside the workshop placing plates of well-known brands in the blank material and printing logos on T-shirts with a heat press.” In the lorry, police found numerous boxes of electronic material (speakers and headphones among other items) and later uncovered a large number of loudspeakers, headphones, mobile phone cases, handbags, wallets, badges from more than 120 different brands and high-quality stickers. There were numerous parcels of false goods waiting to be delivered to shops in Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

It is a Californian kingsnake which features in the catalogue of invasive species of concern for the outermost region of the Canary Islands. Non-poisonous, its possession and release into the natural environment constitutes a serious infraction, with fines ranging between 5,001 and 200,000 euros. It was found trapped by the staff in Costa Calma. Environmental agents used four traps to catch new specimens. They also took charge of the reptile for study, determining that it is a female with eggs. It is believed to have come from a property nearby. An investigation was immediately started to find the owner who could even face a prison sentence for keeping a prohibited snake.

Neither the age or nationality of the victim was released. The Canary Emergency Service and National Police were called to the scene after the 112 emergency control centre received an alert after the rescue. A doctor who happened to be in the area was already performing resuscitation. “The staff of the SUC on arrival at the scene of the incident continued with the basic resuscitation and then advanced, without success, and the man’s death was confirmed,” said a 112 spokesman.
HIS snake was found for the first time in a treatment plant on Fuerteventura but is believed to have escaped as a “pet”.

Lanzarote expects French boost with new Bordeaux flight
T
HE Canar y Islands has launched a campaign in the United States as part of its policy of diversification of tourist markets.
This action is focused as an alternative to the Caribbean and will develop mainly on the East Coast with special attention to Boston and New York The tourist promotion has been launched by Promotur Turismo de Canarias, an entity dependent on the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports, and has an investment of 250,000 euros. Isaac Castellano, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, said: “This campaign is a first step to grow in a market that in the past was important for the islands. It has real potential for the Canary Islands.” Deputy Minister of Tourism, Cristóbal de la Rosa, added: “We have chosen to go hand in hand with Expedia, the leading online agency in the country with 27 million users per month, which has helped us to analyse the market and the ideal positioning among American tourists, who seek novel alternatives to other traditional destinations for them like the Caribbean. “ The campaign, co-financed by 85% by the European Regional Development Fund, revolves around the creative concept of the four elements (Earth, Fire, Air and Water) that serve as storyline to present the offer of the islands, highlighting the diversity of landscapes and multiple options of activities, in the idea of positioning the destination as an alternative for sun and beach holidays. ANZAROTE is expecting an influx of French visitors as a result of a new easyJet route that links the island with Bordeaux.
The low-cost airline will be operating the service until October. Tourism councillor for Lanzarote Cabildo, Ángel Vázquez highlighted the importance of this new connection because “French tourism is one of our main bets in the strategy of market diversification.” The Foreign Promotion Society of Lanzarote (SPELTurismo Lanzarote), in collaboration with easyJet and Bordeaux Airport, recently presented in the event room Chantier Nicolas, located on the banks of the Garonne River, the benefits of the island as a destination. cluded in the market diversification strategy implemented by Turismo de Canarias. According to data from the Instituto Canario de Estadística, in 2018, nearly 40,000 American tourists travelled to the Canary Islands and stayed mostly in five-star hotels. The profile of the North American tourist is characterised by a greater interest in knowing the cultural and gastronomic offer of the Canary Islands. Promotur Turismo de Canarias also works on the possibility of connecting the islands through direct flights with the US and two open calls of the Flight Development Fund to support the establishment of routes from New York to
Tenerife and Gran Canaria for a total amount of 450,000 euros In this regard, Cristóbal de la Rosa, Deputy Minister of Tourism, points out that, at present, American visitors arrive across the peninsula, the United Kingdom and other European countries, which obviously limits the possibilities of growth as a tourist destination. “An improvement in this connectivity would help us grow in number of visitors and, in addition, it would be great news for the internationalisation of the Canarian economy as a whole, as it would promote all kinds of exchanges with that country,” De la Rosa points out.
The presentation, made to a score of influencers of the French tourism sector, joins the reception held in June at the César Manrique Lanzarote Airport to passengers on the first flight of the route that has two weekly frequenciesMonday and Thursday- with departures at 4pm in Bordeaux and at 7pm in Lanzarote. Ángel Vázquez said they valued the French tourist because of their high spending capacity but also because they appreciated the sustainability model followed on the island, enjoyed the gastronomy and participated in numerous tourist-sports activities that Lanzarote offers.
Family of missing Yeremi Vargas want “suspect” reinvestigated
T
HE family of Yéremi Vargas, the boy who disappeared in Gran Canaria 12 years ago, are pressing for the case to be reopened and a prime suspect now in prison reinvestigated. Their new lawyer, Marcos García Montes announced at a press conference that in September he will present a series of initiatives to denounce legal rulings made in October 2017. At that time, a judge said there was no evidence to suggest that a convicted paedophile, known as “El Rubio”, had been involved but the family believe he is the only person to have had the opportunity and the motive. They say he was spotted in the same area of Gran Canaria from where Yeremi disappeared and it was in a car which the police had put out an appeal to trace. The paedophile, currently in prison, has apparently already
confessed to a fellow prisoner that he was responsible and had burned Yeremi’s body. The family’s announcement was made on the day Yeremi would have turned 20. TIthaisa Suárez, his mother, said the family faced this new stage “with great hope” and were confident they would one day know the truth. They hoped they could at least recover his remains, bury him and then have a place to go to mourn and bring flowers. “We have been suffering for 12 years,” she said. The family would like a new judge to take reopen the
case and follow the lines of the Civil Guard investigation, over which they have no complains. Sr. Garcia Montes said he had commissioned a team of criminologists and experts to review the procedure to try to reopen it. He said the work carried out by the Civil Guard team for more than a decade of had been “coherent and impeccable” and had led to the investigation of “El Rubio”. He and the family believe this man’s conversation with a fellow prisoner had not been sufficiently investigated.

Six tips for protecting and growing your savings ask the right questions and use appropriate tools to create an objective risk profile for you. They can then recommend an appropriate blend of investments to match your requirements.
3. Identify your timeline for investing
By Paul Montague, Partner, Blevins Franks
A
MIDST today’s climate of global uncertainty and prolonged low interest rates, careful plan ning is particularly important to secure longterm financial security. These six key tips can help.
1. Establish a suitable strategy Crucially, your portfolio should be created and managed to meet your particular circumstances and goals, including your risk tolerance and income requirements. Make sure your investments are tailored for your life in Spain rather than for a UK resident. With an ill-fitting investment portfolio, you could find your money is not working as hard as it should, is difficult to access or becomes eroded by inflation.
2. Understand your risk appetite Before investing, you need to pinpoint the right balance of risk/ return for your peace of mind. It is difficult to assess your own tolerance for risk, so speak to an experienced adviser who can
Generally, the longer you have to invest, the more risk you can afford to take. With time, you can ride out market volatility and benefit from compound returns. Understanding your time horizon is also useful to establish the right level of ‘liquidity’. Your plans may change unexpectedly in future, so make sure you hold some liquid assets that can be easily sold if you need to access your capital or change strategy.
4. Insist on diversification
The higher your concentration in one particular investment type or area – including the UK – the greater the risk. By diversifying across asset classes, geographic region and market sectors, you limit your exposure to any one area. You can take diversification further with an adviser who uses a ‘multi-manager’ approach to spread your investments out among several fund managers. This can reduce your reliance on any one manager making the right decisions in all market conditions.
5. Incorporate effective tax planning
To help maximise your real returns and protect your wealth for future generations, factor in tax planning when setting up your portfolio. Look for arrangements that can shelter capital from tax while providing a tax-efficient income, and that enable you to transfer wealth to your beneficiaries with minimal taxation.
For expatriates, tax planning is complicated by having to work with the rules of more than one country. An adviser with crossborder expertise can ensure you meet your tax liabilities, in Spain and in the UK while taking advantage of available opportunities.
6. Regularly review your strategy Good financial planning is not a ‘set and forget’ exercise. Not only does everyone have their own unique set of circumstances, aims and requirements, these often change over time. External influences such as changes in the law or tax rules may also prompt a strategy rethink. You should review your financial planning around once a year to keep it on track, bringing it forward if anything happens to affect the effectiveness or suitability of your portfolio. You can bring all these guidelines together by taking personalised, quality advice from a regulated adviser. Whether you are looking at investments, tax planning, estate planning or your pensions, it is crucial that your approach is appropriate for you. With the right strategy in place for your life in Spain, you can protect and grow your wealth – in real terms – not only during your lifetime but for the next generations to enjoy. All advice received from Blevins Franks is personalised and provided in writing. This article, however, should not be construed as providing any personalised taxation or investment advice. Fears for La Graciosa as beach is swamped by tourists
WO people have been arrested on the Spanish mainland for selling nautical qualifications when not authorised to do so.
Within the framework of the operation “Portaviones”, police from Gran Canaria travelled to the province of Almería to arrest the two Spaniards, aged 63 and 50. Both are accused of a crime of falsification of a public document and another of continued fraud through the issue of false sports nautical titles and selling them over the internet in breach of current regulations. So far, 155 degrees have been detected, issued over the last two and a half years, with the fraudulent benefit reaching 19,300 euros. The investigation was initiated following a series of inquiries made by Fuerteventura Maritime Detachment, which brought to the attention of the Costa Teguise ETPJ the existence of a possible fraud and the falsification of a public
document related to the issuance of nautical qualifications. For this reason, the Civil Guard checked the information provided and investigated a well-known website for sale and classified bulletin board, in which all types of nautical sports qualifications were offered, from yacht captain to sailing license (known as a titulin) for a price lower than the market average. All of the certifcates were sent to victims residing in the province of Las Palmas, Tenerife, Madrid, Ourense and A Coruña, among others. According to the regulations in force, the issue of certification by nautical schools is limited to those academies that are authorised by the autonomous community to do so.

NE of the most beautiful beaches in the Canary Islands is being saturated so much by tourists that its ecosystem is being put at major risk, according to a new study. Playa Francesa on the island of La Graciosa should ideally accommodate no more than 108 people but on some days, that number doubles and can even soar to 250. The study is linked to the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and shows that Playa Francesa “is far exceeding its tourist cargo capacity”. The numbers found only relate to those who arrive by boat and don’t take into account tourists who arrive at the beach on foot, by taxi or on bikes. One of the first conclusions of the study is clear: “If this continues, in the same upward dynamics in terms of the number of visitors, the
impacts generated may put at risk the natural value of a very scarce ecosystem in the Canary Islands”. “In short,” says the study, “ there are indications that the use of this beach is intensive and that it may be significantly altering a space protected by legislation.” The author of the work indicates that he hopes that the study “will be useful for the managers of the protected area, and that it could be a starting point to reflect on the need to regulate the activity of tourists and visitors in such a vulnerable environment.” “Unlimited growth can also suppose a substantial reduction in the quality of the visit of those who come to La Graciosa, hoping to find an idyllic spot but
then surprised to discover a massification of sun and beach tourists,” he adds. The report ecommends that more studies be continued, such as the calculation of the carrying capacity of the tracks and trails of the island; tourist
activities that are being carried out in specific areas such as the aforementioned beach or if the implementation of a 75 per cent discount on transportation for Canarian residents has meant an increase in the number of visits to La Graciosa.
Canary government asks public to whistleblow on tax fraud
T
NEW WEBSITE
HE Canary Government is asking members of the public to help the fight against tax fraud by tipping them off about any suspicions they may have.
The Ministry of Finance, through the Canarian Tax Agency (ATC), has enabled a channel in its electronic headquarters so that citizens can file tax denouncements, both anonymously and through an electronic certificate. “The objective of the initiative is that the population can inform the administration, quickly and easily, of facts or situations that may be constitutive of tax infractions or have consequences for the application of taxes,” a spokesman explained. Among the complaints that may be presented include irregularities in invoices and undeclared tickets, as well as fraud through sales concealment software, in e-commerce and web fraud or tourist rental. Any of them must include the data of the person denounced and the description of the complaint. Once the complaint has been received, the ATC will transfer it to the competent body, which will carry out the analysis and, where appropriate, investigation, of the data and facts contained in the complaint, and proceed to file it or at the beginning of the proceedings. necessary if there are indications of possible tax fraud. The complaint must be filed at the electronic headquarters of the Canarian Tax Agency through the web https:// sede.gobcan.es/tributos/jsf/publico/sede/tramites/ tramite.jsp?categoria=enuncias.

TORTURE CASE
Two of Sweden’s most wanted Diving infringements men arrested in shopping centre reported by A police N Olympic boxer and his brother, two of the most wanted and dangerous men in Sweden after they kidnapped and tortured their victim with a drill, were arrested on the Costa del Sol. An off-duty police officer recognised them in a shopping centre in Malaga and after following them, managed to arrest both of them single-handed.
T
HE Civil Guard has reported nine diving infringements in Lanzarote.
The Group of Underwater Activities Specialists (GEAS) inspected a total of 16 diving centres, a club and seven dive sites. The areas included Tías, Yaiza, Tinajo and Teguise. The complaints encompass
not having the proper authorisation from the Canary Governmen to open a dive centre, not having or filling official control books of equipment and customers and the safety conditions of the recharging facilities as well as
the requirements and controls necessary for autonomous breathing in underwater activity. In particular, the infringements have been processed for not having made the corresponding five-yearly periodic inspection (OCA) of a compressor, for not submitting a written report of the results of the annual review and verification, mentioning the correct operation of all the control and safety elements of the installation, as well as for not presenting certificates of the annual visual inspection on the diving bottles. Another of the infringements concrns not carrying out a medical examination on a staff member before diving.
The two brothers, aged 35 and 37, had held their hostage for three days and were considered “ver y violent”. “One of the brothers is an
Olympic boxer and both have belonged to a wellknown biker gang from the city of Gothenburg,” said a spokesman for the Spanish police. Both were the subject of European arrest warrants. The two brothers were wanted for the kidnap and torture of a man in Sweden
in February. They allegedly wounded the victim with a drilling machine , causing him serious injury, in a bid to get his bank details. Both have previous convictions in Sweden. Later, police learned that the two men had intended to flee the Costa del Sol that same day.

Little girl survives ecstasy accident A three-year-old girl who swallowed an ecstasy tablet after finding it in a park in Ibiza has won her battle for survival.
The youngster, who was on holiday with her parents from Russia, had been rushed to hospital in a critical condition when she became violently ill. At one stage, her condition
was so serious that she was transferred by air ambulance to the Son Espases hospital in Mallorca. Five days after the neartragedy, she was given the all-clear and discharged.
The girl’s mother saw her as she put the pill into her mouth but by the time she got to her, she had swallowed it. The local council of Santa Eulària said it was an isolated incident but still asked other people to be on their guard in case there were any other dropped pills.

The unfortunate motorist managed to avoid plummeting down the stairs by yanking on her handbrake and keeping her foot on the brake until help arrived. The embarrassing incident happened at the entrance to the

Local police, firemen, the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Civil Guard and Maritime Rescue were all involved in the search for the Belarus man who is now likely to face a hefty bill for the emergency call-out. At one stage, even underwater drivers were drafted in to look for his “body” during the three-hour scare. Police say the man had been out drinking with his friends in
Girona when they decided to go to the beach of Playa de Rastrell in the Roses district for an evening swim. The group had a bet on who could reach the buoys the fastest but the man, a lorry driver by trade, did not return. Concerned that he had got into difficulties in the water, his friends called the emergency services who then started the search.
transmitters of diseases such as salmonellosis or dysentery. Wasps may also become a problem near swimming pools and gardens and are attracted by perfume, creams and even sweat. There are also warnings about the black fly, known as the bloodsucker as its bite produces an intense, lasting and painful itching that can last for weeks. Some areas of Spain, such as Tarragona, are also having to deal with an increase in rats.
The National Association of Environmental Health Companies says the heatwave is going to bring a summer “full of plagues”, with wasps and flies also adding to the misery of holidaymakers and locals. ANECPLA warns all parts of Spain are at risk and says many of the pests can transmit diseases such as the Zika
virus, salmonellosis, leptospirosis or dysentery. They can also cause allergic reactions and discomfort. General director of ANECPLA, Milagros Fernández de Lezeta said extreme temperatures are “the best breeding ground for these species” with mosquito multiplying with each increase in degree.

When he couldn’t see his friends, he thought they had abandoned him and still wearing just his trunks, he hailed a taxi to where he thought their car had been parked. HE 2019 San Fermin bull-running festival in Pamplona ended with a number of serious injuries but seasoned participants still claim it has become too tame!
They say the event is “losing its essence” and have described the present-day festival as “a farce and a deception.” They claim the use of a number of tame animals means they can’t break away from the charging herd, hence cutting out an extra edge to the challenge of dodging the giant beasts. They are also complaining about the use of anti-slip services which cuts out the risk of both people and bulls falling. Alberto Buitrago from Valencia said: “It’s losing its essence. It’s too big. The use of anti-slip chemicals means the bulls don’t fall. There’s also the issue of the tame steers being used this year.” David Huerte from Madrid also told Euronews: “You spend a lot of money to come here and risk your life but over the morning, with posters declaring: “Stop neutralising the bull-runs!” Participants also took to the social networks to say the runs “have lost the emotions” because of the various safety measures and pre-training of the bulls “to run faster”.

COMPUTER HACKING
Businesses defrauded of millions through “phishing” scam
S
PAIN’S National Police, in a joint operation with the Civil Guard, have dismantled an international criminal organisation dedicated to committing crimes through “phishing”. The gang was engaged in cheating companies, with which they previously had some kind of commercial agreement, through computer attacks. In addition, the alleged perpetrators gained the trust of legal companies through commercial agreements, seizing not only their business data, but also their bank passwords and email.
Police carried out four raids in Malaga and detained six people. In addition, computers, bank cards, a multitude of documents, jewellery valued at more than 4,000 euros and 2,950 euros in cash were seized. In Castellón the agents carried out two house searches, as well as the registration of three ceramics companies. They also detained
SULPHUR EMISSIONS
Pollution-checking drones to fly over cruise ships in Spanish ports
S
PAIN is to use drones to monitor the pollution levels of cruise ships coming into all of its ports.
The devices will start flying around the liner funnels from next year in a bid to adhere to new European legislation over sulphur emissions. Sensors will detect whether they exceed the maximum permitted level of 0.5%, which will be required as of January 1st, 2020. There will be particular emphasis on the so-called “purple” ports of Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca which have topped the list of worst offenders when it comes to cruise ship pollution. The Spanish Executive confirmed the drone plan in answer to a parliamentary question lodged by the party Unidas Podemos. Its environment spokesman, Equo Juantxo López de Uralde said there had to be tougher action and more controls over cruise liners. The Spanish Government is already in talks with the European Maritime Safety Agency to carry out this work with drones. These devices, as pointed out, would be remotely controlled and, through their
sensors, the gas plume emitted by the chimney of the ships will be analysed and the sulphur content of the fuel that the vessel in question is burning at that moment will be verified. In June, it was revealed that the ports of Barcelona, Palma, Venice, Civitavecchia in Italy and Southampton suffer the most pollution in Europe due to the presence of cruise ships, and Spain, Italy, Greece, France and Norway are the countries most exposed to the pollution generated by liners. “Cruises are floating cities with a high consumption of energy generated by the most toxic fuels that exist,” said Ecologists in Action. “While cities are prohibiting the circulation of diesel cars to reduce the pollution that their population breathes, they are giving free rein to the shipping companies, which cause large concentrations of pollutants with a high risk to the health of their passengers and the nearest populations. to the cruise terminals. It is unacceptable.”

Hotel chambermaids Mass arrests for in Ibiza to walk out in Austria to Spain scam August FALSE REGISTRATIONS
“SLAVE” CONDITIONS
H
OTEL chambermaids in Ibiza are to walk out for two days in August for their very first strike and the rest of the Balearics, including Mallorca, could follow.
The women, known in Spain as “Kellys”, are fed up with their workload which, they say, is causing stress and injury and have likened their conditions to “slavery”. “We are presented each day with a list and number of rooms to clean. Are waiters paid according to how many cups of coffee they serve?” asked one chambermaid during a protest meeting in a park in Ibiza. The strike will take place for two consecutive days in August “in order to make an impact” though the exact dates have yet to be set. A call will also be made to other hotel chambermaids in Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera to join in. Rafa Sánchez, representative
of the CGT union, said the women were being treated unfairly with no regard to their health. “According to the law, the workload should be regulated,” he said. “That is why more than ever the strike is necessary.” The chambermaids agreed that “meetings, protests and demonstrations” were no longer making any impact so a walkout was unavoidable. The CGT has confirmed it
is considering extending the strike across the Balearic Islands for the same two days in August. Dates will be chosen to give the maximum impact. A spokeswoman for the Association of Kellys of Ibiza said they wanted to remind politicians that they were many workers in the Balearics who worked to sustain the islands’ tourism but were not in the public eye. “Without us, there would be no tourism,” she said.

HE Civil Guard, in the framework of operation JORMOS, has dismantled a network dedicated to the sale of vehicles previously acquired illegally in European Union countries.
So far, 42 people have been arrested, some of them through different orders of detention and extradition, for the alleged crimes of fraud, reception, improper appropriation of vehicles, falsification of public, official or mercantile document, falsification of private documents and belonging to a criminal organisation. Also, 45 stolen vehicles whose value amounts to 1,450,000 euros have been seized. The operation was initiated during spotchecks of ITV station when an unusual increase of vehicles from Austria was detected in the Madrid town of Móstoles. The agents verified that one of the vehicles registered in Spain had been stolen in a country of the European Union. The gang leaders created bogus companies to acquire cars on leasing arrangements but then shipped them over to Spain and used forged documents to register them. The operation is still open and further arrests are likely.

Ways to check your car is road legal
T
HE Guardia Civil have advised that if you want to save yourself an 800 euro fine then use the coin trick. We will explain.
Our vehicle needs be in a good mechanical condition to drive safely and without any worries. One of the most important elements that get over looked all too frequently are the tyres, these are so important as they are the only part of the car that contacts the ground. This is why we should check them each time we fill up the car or when we check the tyre pressures and make sure they are in a good condition each time. We should also ALWAYS invest in good quality tyres. It is false economy to say 50€ on tyres if, during an emergency situation, they don’t respond as they should cause might higher value damages. Driving with dangerous tyres can also incur a fine from the authorities, one fine could reach up to €800 as it puts at risk the driver’s life as well as that of other road uses and pedestrians. The Guardia Civil has issued an easy way to test the tyres with a 1€coin. The 1€ coin is made up of an exterior gold perimeter and a silver interior. It is a simple as inserting said coin into the tread of the tyre. If the coil part is completely covered then the tyre has enough tread, in technical terms a minimum of 1,7 mm; if the coil part is visible then the tyre needs to be changed urgently. However, if you value your safety then tyres should be changed when they get to a 3 mm depth. The minimum depth is all over the tyre not just in the centre as most people assume, if the edge is scrubbed clean but the middle still has a 3 mm depth then the tyre needs to be replaced. Tyres can wear unevenly due to mechanical issues with the car however the most common causes of uneven wear are over
or under inflated tyre pressures; so, in over inflated tyres the centre is the only part touching the road or in under inflated tyres the outside edge is the only part touching the road. Uneven worn tyres and/or under/over inflated are the biggest cause of tyre blow outs which can be costly, dangerous and in some cases, life threatening.
Your car will have a plaque indicating the correct tyre pressures or it will be shown in the hand book; please don’t use the petrol stations gauges as an accurate reading as most of them aren’t calibrated. Please check your tyres, it could help save both your life and someone else’s.

TOP TIPS
How to keep cats cool in the summer P ALE-coloured cats are vulnerable to sunburn; particularly on their ears, noses and sparsely haired areas.
Sun damage can lead to skin cancer which may require extensive surger y – even amputation in severe cases. The best prevention is to keep your cat indoors when the sun is strongest, between 11am and 3pm. Alternatively, cover vulnerable areas or regularly apply a non-toxic waterproof human sunblock or a product specifically for pets. Seek prompt veterinary advice if your cat’s skin looks sore, crusty or scaly. Your cat needs access to clean water at all times, ideally in a large bowl filled to the brim. Older cats are particularly vulnerable to dehydration. Grooming is important, especially for longhaired animals. A tangle-free coat will protect your pet’s delicate skin and keep them cool. Some animals may need their coats trimming – seek advice from a professional groomer. Watch your pet for signs of over-heating, including heavy panting and loss of energy. If
you recognise these signs, encourage your cat to have a drink. Signs of heatstroke include collapse, excessive panting, and dribbling. If you suspect your cat is suffering, move them to a cool place, preferably with a draught, wet their coat and contact a vet immediately. Avoid overcooling by using cool, not freezing, water.
Open windows Curious cats seek out cooling breezes in the summer, and at this time of year vets treat many cats with serious injuries after falling from heights when their owners open the windows. Sadly, some do not survive their injuries. To keep your cats safe and the temperature low inside your home during the summer months, either install tip and tilt windows, which allow air into the room without offering access outside to curious cats, or use wire mesh, netting or a
screen across windows when they are open to prevent the cats getting out. If your cat does fall from more than one storey, the animal should be checked by the vet. Even if your cat appears to be fine, there is a risk of internal injuries. Get a check after any fall if your cat seems to be behaving strangely.
Getting shut in
Cats are naturally curious and notorious for their ability to sneak into places where they may not be wanted. There are many tales of cats being shut under floorboards, or into removal vans, or just getting locked into a neighbour’s garden shed. This can have dire consequences, as lack of water can cause dehydration. Older cats are particularly vulnerable because ageing kidneys mean that dehydration occurs rapidly. The risk of cats getting shut in sheds, greenhouses and garages increases in the summer as cats spend more time out and about. If your cat
goes missing it is worth thinking about what has been happening in the neighbourhood recently and making enquiries. Ring around the local vets and animal shelters or welfare
societies in case your wanderer has been taken into one of these. Look on the internet as well, as there are several sites where you can report a missing pet.
Make sure your cat is microchipped and that the details are kept up to date significantly increases the chances of you being reunited should your cat go missing.
..and don’t forget your rabbit either! C ONSIDER moving your rabbit inside to keep them cool and out of intense sunlight.
Move your rabbits’ hutch out of the sun into a cooler place (this may even be inside). A fan can be used to keep the air cool and create airflow, however, do not blow the fan directly onto the rabbits and ensure they have enough room to move away if they wish. A cold, rung out towel can be placed over the run to provide shade and the fan can be blown onto this to help lower the temperature. Be careful to not cover the whole hutch as the rabbits will still need airflow to keep cool and ensure that the towel isn’t dripping wet to avoid drenching your rabbits. Rabbits are not good swimmers so please don’t encourage them to jump in a pool as the shock could even prove fatal. Instead, try freezing a large bottle of water or ice packs and wrapping them in an old, clean tea towel and place in the hutch. That way, if your rabbits feel hot, they can lie next to the bottle to keep cool. Consider purchasing a special self-cooling mat which can be placed on the floor of the hutch or run to lower
temperatures and provide respite from the heat Marble tiles or slates are brilliant to introduce into a run and keep it cool so your rabbits can lie on it if needed. Be careful to ensure the tiles remain in the shade, though, as the tiles can become extremely hot if placed in direct sunlight. Ensure your rabbits have plenty of fresh, cool water to stay hydrated. Consider soaking your rabbits’ leafy greens in icy water or serve fresh from the fridge so that they’re nice and cold. Rabbits in the wild live in warrens which are deep underground. By digging soil and getting out of the sunlight rabbits can keep cool. Consider introducing a manmade warren in the run to keep your rabbit happy and cool. Use a brush to get rid of any excess fur which will make them feel hotter and more uncomfortable in the heat Dampen your rabbit’s ears with a wet cloth or a fine mist (if they’re comfortable with you doing this). They lose heat
through their ears so this will speed up the cooling process. Warning: Rabbits are at higher risk of myiasis, or fly strike, during the summer months - particularly those that have issues keeping themselves clean due to old age, arthritis or dental problems. Make sure your rabbits and their bedding is clean at all times. Flies may quickly lay eggs on soiled bedding and the resulting maggots can burrow into your pet’s fur and body cavity, which is potentially fatal.
What are the symptoms of heatstroke in rabbits?
Weakness and lethargy Panting Reddening of the ears Salivating Confusion Convulsions What should I do if my rabbit suffers heatstroke? If you suspect your rabbit is suffering from heatstroke, do not submerge your them in cold water as the shock can be fatal. Instead, dampen their fur and ears with cool water and seek veterinary attention immediately.

Cuesta de la Villa
Cuesta de la Villa
A great part of the fun of wining and dining in Tenerife is finding somewhere different and it’s well worth a trip out to Santa Ursula to the warm and inviting Donde Mario. Though from the outside you might easily pass by it, the inside is elegant and captivating. Restaurateur Mario Torres surprises us every day with his extensive use of produce in season, and his unbeatable experience with wines and cookery. Just try his Cherne warm salad, a super-healthy Canarian fish soup, or his Lomo de Vaca Morucha. You will be captivated.
Set in a series of old Canary houses, this restaurant is made up of a labyrinth of inter-connecting rooms leading off from the bar area in the centre. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an English country pub with its low ceilings with wooden beams and warm décor. The food is fundamentally Canarian. They grow most of their own produce at their allotment and only use olive oil to cook with. Their ethos is a simple one, only use the best, fresh produce and cook it with thought and care. The menu is described as Picoteo, slightly more than tapas without reaching the full-blown three-course meal status. It is delicious and affordable. “La Bodeguita de Enfrente” won the “II Gastronomic Awards Cruzcampo Gran Reserva El Día-Mesa Abierta”, which took place last year.
Why not try a touch of “picoteo”, the Spanish-style of eating where, as the name suggests, you pick a selection of dishes and share with your companions. You will find “El Calderito de la Abuela” in Santa Úrsula and it offers a unique and homely atmosphere combining Canary cuisine with modern creativity. In 2016, “El Calderito de la Abuela” won the “Best Canarian Kitchen Restaurant Award” in the first edition of the “El Dia-Mesa Abierta” Awards on July 28th. The exterior of this property belies what you will find inside as it is full of charm and carácter and there is an incredible view of La Orotava valley. “A gem” is how it is described.

The first “We do science”, promoted by the ULL and the Cabildo de Tenerife, is dedicated to making visible the work that women scientists are leading, especially at the University of La Laguna. The second exhibition is titled “Anonymous is the name of a woman” and aims to be a tribute to all those brave women who dare to challenge the norms imposed by society and sought alternatives to be heard and read.
J
ULI Ruiz, with the JR brand, incorporates hand made jewellery to the wide range of products that the Valle de La Orotava Street Market offers to the public every Saturday.
Specialised in the design and elaboration of traditional Canarian rings, brooches, earrings of all kinds, bracelets and pendants, he carries out commissioned work in gold, 925 silver and other metals, such as brass, copper, aluminum and bronze. Juli points out that “all the works are handmade” and that in addition to metals, he uses “other materials such as wood, stones, lava, seashells, fabrics, threads, leather and laces” to make badges, shields, trophies , rings, reading points, miniature canary knives and details such as pins. This artisan, who joined the Mercadillo de La Orotava in May 2019, likes to recreate in his pieces some of the artistic manifestations of the guanches of the Canary Islands, such as rock engravings, spirals, pintaderas, podomorphs, decorative motifs of pottery etc.

USEUMS of Tenerife has opened the deadline for nature photographers, professionals and amateurs, who wish to participate in the sixth edition of #NaturaJazz, held at the Museum of Nature and Archeology, every Thursday from the months of October and November. It is an event that combines the projection of images of nature with the melodies of the best jazz bands. This edition has, once again, the official section, a popular call and different parallel activities. Entries may be submitted until September 30th at www.museostenerife.org.
With the #NaturaJazz Festival, Tenerife Museums seeks out the best nature photographers in all its aspects. A total of 12 projects will be selected, which will be distributed based on the following geographical classification: six projects in the ‘Canary’ category (two
submarine and four terrestrials), and six projects in the ‘rest of the world’ category (two in water and four terrestrial). The projects submitted must be made up of unpublished works, property of the author and that have not been awarded in other competitions or photographic events. The selected projects will be exhibited during the celebration of the different sessions of #Naturajazz and will receive an economic endowment of 500 euros for
the acquisition of two of the images of the submitted project, which will become part of the Museum’s funds. Similarly, 1,000 euros will be given to the best photographer in exchange for four photographs. There is also an opportunity for those who do not participate in the official call, but who are interested in showing some of their images of nature (maximum five), and that by quality and relevance, are attractive. Voting will be online and can be carried out by anyone. Those interested can consult the rules, upload the images and vote on the event’s website. The deadline for uploading photos and voting is until November 14, 2019. As for parallel activities, this new edition will reintroduce children to nature photography and jazz music. In addition, for those adults who want to get closer to the world of nature and travel photography to know their ins and outs and encourage themselves to photograph the rich biodiversity of our islands, professional photographer Oliver Yanes will teach a three-day initiation course. Two field trips are incorporated into the programme to take nature photographs in which attendees will share photography techniques and tricks.
The new Mayor of the capital, Patricia Hernández, accompanied by councillor of festivities, Andrés Martín Casanova, met with Javier, who is Professor of Technical Drawing of Baccalaureate at La Salle San Ildefonso School, and transmitted his assignment for next year’s party, dedicated to The Coquettish 50s. The meeting took place at the Carnival House, where many of the designs and logos created by Javier Nóbrega are found over the years. Javier Nóbrega said the assignment was “a tremendous responsibility” although he says he is “very sure” of what he is going to do in an artistic aspect, since it is a dream he had for decades. He defines himself as “a compulsive cartoonist since childhood”, having been born
in Santa Cruz in 1968. He is the author of the logos of more than 25 groups, among which are murgas from the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, north of the island and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He is also the creator of various illustrations for other groups such as Comparsa infantil Tropicana, Murga infantil Retorciditos or Murga infantil Rebobinados and illustrated the cover of the book “Cantina Ilegal” by Pedro Mengíbar. From the Classroom of Culture of the Carnival of Cádiz, he was commissioned to make illustrations to edit commemorative stamps of the winning groups of the Carnival of Cádiz in 2014 and 2015 and has been involved in numerous other projects and assignments.

How to ease the pain of sciatica
S
CIATICA is when the sciatic nerve, which runs from your hips to your feet, is irritated. It usually gets better in four to six weeks but can last longer.
If you have sciatica, your bottom, backs of your legs and/or feet and toes may feel painful (the pain may be stabbing, burning or shooting), tingling like pins and needles, numb and/or weak. Your symptoms may be worse when moving, sneezing or coughing. You may also have back pain but this is not usually as bad as the pain in your bottom, legs or feet. You probably do not have sciatica if you only have back pain. To help relieve your pain and speed up your recovery:

E
VERYONE has feelings of anxiety at some point in their life; for example, you may feel worried and anxious about sitting an exam, or having a medical test or job interview. During times like these, feeling anxious can be perfectly normal. But some people find it hard to control their worries. Their feelings of anxiety are more constant and can often affect their daily lives. Anxiety is the main symptom of several conditions, including panic disorder, phobias, such as agoraphobia or claustrophobia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety disorder (social phobia). GAD is a long-term condition that causes you to feel anxious about a wide range of situations and issues, rather than one specific event.
People with GAD feel anxious most days and often struggle to remember the last time they felt relaxed. As soon as one anxious thought is resolved, another may appear about a different issue. GAD can cause both psychological (mental) and physical symptoms. These vary from person to person, but can include feeling restless or worried, having trouble concentrating or sleeping and dizziness or heart palpitations. Although feelings of anxiety at certain times are completely normal, see your GP if anxiety is affecting your daily life or causing you distress. Your GP will ask about your symptoms and your worries, fears and
emotions to find out if you could have GAD. GAD can have a significant effect on your daily life, but several different treatments are available that can ease your symptoms.
These include:
Psychological therapies – you can get psychological therapies like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) on the NHS; you don’t need a referral from your GP and you can refer yourself: find a psychological therapies service in your area Medication – such as a type of antidepressant called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) There are also many things you can do yourself to help reduce your anxiety, such as going on a self-help course,
exercising regularly, stopping smoking and cutting down on the amount of alcohol and caffeine you drink.

Do not sit or lie down for long periods. Even if moving hurts, it’s not harmful and can help you get better faster Do not use hot water bottles to ease the pain. You could scald yourself if your skin is numb Non-urgent advice: See a GP if the pain has not improved after trying home treatments for a few weeks, is getting worse and/or is stopping you doing your normal activities. Immediate action required: Go to A&E or call 999 if you have sciatica on both sides, have weakness or numbness in both legs that is severe or getting worse, have numbness around or under your genitals or around your anus, find it hard to empty your bladder or can’t control it and and/or do not notice when you need to empty your bowels. These could be symptoms of a serious back problem that needs to be treated in hospital as soon as possible.
Activities to strengthen muscles M USCLE strength is necessary for all daily movement, to build and maintain strong bones, to regulate blood sugar and blood pressure and to help maintain a healthy weight.
Muscle-strengthening exercises are counted in repetitions and sets. A repetition is one complete movement of an activity, like a biceps curl or a sit-up. A set is a group of repetitions. For each strength exercise, try to do at least one set, with eight to 12 repetitions in each set. To get health benefits from strength exercises, you should
REPETITION NEEDED do them to the point where you struggle to complete another repetition. There are many ways you can strengthen your muscles, whether it’s at home or in the gym. Examples of musclestrengthening activities for most people include lifting weights, working with resistance bands, doing exercises that use your own body weight, such as pushups and sit-ups, heavy gardening, such as digging and shovelling, yoga and pilates.

Losing a tooth on holiday doesn’t have to be a disaster
Did you know dentists can perform transplants if swift action is taken?
W
HAT should you do if you break or lose a tooth on vacation?
Go immediately to the dentist but don’t forget to take the lost fragment or tooth. Those pieces reimplanted during the 30 minutes after the incident have an 80 per cent recovery success rate. Something happens to the human being when he or she becomes a tourist. Something that sometimes becomes embarrassing and hopeless, especially if the same language is not spoken in the visited countr y. It is a sudden awkwardness that seems to dominate our countenance, actions and discourse. David Foster Wallace described it hilariously throughout his essay “Something supposedly fun that I will never do again”, a book in which he recounts his experience during a week on a luxury cruise: I have heard buoyant Americans ask at the counter Passenger Service if you have to get wet to dive, if the shot at the plate takes place outdoors, if the crew sleeps on board and at what time is the Midnight Buffet. As a guideline, physical accidents also become a common feature of the tourist experience. The slip in the pool, the fracture of the tooth after biting a food of unknown texture, the stumbling block due to distraction (basically, looking at the mobile while walking) or the fall caused by the practice of some water sport. All these situations can lead to bruises that require medical attention. And on vacation, it is not pleasant to face an unknown health system. If it is a dental contusion, it is considered an emergency.
And if the tooth has fractured, broken or extracted, time is money. What should be done in these cases? In the Artedental clinic, whose location is in one of the main tourist centres of Tenerife - Puerto de la Cruz they are accustomed to receiving foreign patients suffering from this type of accident. “Attention in the same language is essential,” explains the staff, “but it would also be helpful if patients had a basic first aid knowledge of what to do in the minutes after tooth loss or breakage, essential to be able to reimplant the piece ”. It should be known that, to reimplant a tooth, it cannot be temporary or milk. The first and most important thing is to keep calm. Nerves and pain, if they exist, can lead to counterproductive behaviours and effects. Second, look for the missing tooth or fragment, handling it carefully to avoid any further damage. This involves taking it by the crown (visible part) and avoiding touching the root, soaking it for a few seconds in a bowl with warm water if it has become dirty, and never rubbing it or adding an external alcohol-like substance to clean it. After soaking it in water, if possible, place it back in its position in the mouth using a handkerchief to bite it and keep the piece in place. Go to a nearby but experienced clinic. In the tourist spots there are prestigious centres with great experience in the attention of
tourists and foreign residents. In Artedental, for example, they have a polyglot team, especially Anglo and German-speaking, and specialised in dental implants. A tooth or fragment that is reimplanted during the 30 minutes after its fall has an 80% chance of being successfully reinserted. That
is why it is so important to act quickly and calmly. The team at this port clinic regrets that the majority of the population is unaware of this protocol. In fact, according to the Spanish Society of Spanish Endodontics (AEDE, for its acronym in Spanish) recently admitted that 90% of Spaniards are unaware that
most of the teeth can be reimplanted. “If our patients came with the fragments or the lost pieces immediately after the incident, we could do much more for them,” they explain in Artedental. In the same way that Wallace narrated his sick and failed obsession to avoid becoming another tourist, in
these cases it would be convenient to forget the tourist status for a moment, to get rid of that ephemeral visitor’s own behaviour and to act calmly and knowingly, choosing a appropriate clinic. In addition, depending on the seriousness of the contusion, it is also appropriate to call the emergency number, 112.

TENTH ANNIVERSARY

T
HE challenge, organised by Tenerife Cabildo, will celebrate its tenth anniversary. It will be a scoring event for the Mont Blanc Ultra Trail (UTMB), the most prestigious test in the world.
The Tenerife event will again have points awarded by the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) in all its modalities that are valid for the UTMB. Thus, the Ultra version (102 km) will have 5 points, while the Trail (67 km) 3 points, the Marathon (43 km) 2 points and the Media (20 km) 1 point. The vice president of the Cabildo, Efraín Medina, points out that “it is important that the race scores internationally because it attracts runners
T
ENERIFE Cabildo and El Sauzal council will invest some 356,000 euros in the replacement works of the artificial turf of the Las Breñas football field.
The project has been awarded to the company Obras y Pavimentos Especiales S.A. The investment is financed in equal parts by both administrations and is part of the Tenerife + Verde programme of the Tenerife 2030 strategy and the Insular Development Strategic Framework (MEDI). Cabildo president, Carlos Alonso points out the effort made to improve the grass of such facilities “with a total investment of 5 million euros in the period 2017-2021, of which half is contributed by the Sports area. The actions are carried out in a consensual manner with the municipalities and the objective is that users can enjoy an installation with state-of-the-art artificial grass approved by FIFA.” The Tenerife + Verde Plus programme of the Cabildo takes place in the period 2017-2021 and represents a contribution of 2.5 million euros from the Island Corporation, in such a way that artificial turf change of 25 fields can be undertaken during these five years. The initiative is part of the Tenerife 2030 strategy of the Cabildo to promote healthy living habits and improve the capabilities of young people on the island.

Guargacho sports court roof to be covered
T
HE Cabildo de Tenerife has approved the project for the execution of the roof of the sports court in Guargacho (San Miguel de Abona) with an investment of around 939,000 euros.
The works are part of the Insular Programme for the Improvement and Conditioning of Sports Facilities (PMAID) of the Tenerife 2030 strategy and the Insular Development Strategic Framework (MEDI) and are funded 52 per cent by the island corporation and the rest by the local council. The project, which has an execution period of eight months once the works have been awarded, contemplates covering the sports court and improving its pavement. Currently there is an open-air sports court that requires the improvement of its facilities to give a greater and better provision for the use of the various sports that take place in it. The action is part of the Pmaid, an initiative with an investment of more than 10 million euros that includes 76 actions for the reform and improvement of sports facilities during the 2016-2019 period, as well as a strategic framework for activities to promote physical activity.

CARBON FOOTPRINT
Santa Cruz Extreme shows its environmental concerns
T
HE Santa Cruz Extreme test, which will be held on October 19th, incorporates this year the calculation of the carbon footprint for the first time to reinforce the criteria of sustainability and environmental conservation of the race.
This has been confirmed by Florentino Guzmán Plasencia, councillor for security, mobility and environment of the city council, who stressed that “all sports practice developed in the natural environment must be carried out with respect to the environment and the local population that inhabit and enjoy it ”as is the case of the Anaga Massif Biosphere Reserve. The calculation of the carbon footprint of the Santa Cruz Extreme sports event will be the first step “to its future compensation through a repopulation, thus making it a carbon neutral event,” added the councillor. AGRESTA S. Coop., a national environmental consultancy based in Santa Cruz, will carry out the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions caused by the organisation of the race, as well as by its participants. Thus, the consumption of electricity, paper, gas, air conditioning and water, as well as transport and accommodation, will be taken into account for this calculation. Santa Cruz Extreme has been and is a sporting event that assumes as its own all the principles of the “Guide of good practices for the development of mountain races in protected natural areas” edited by the FEDME and EUROPARC and contemplates, among other measures, the signage without paint, plaster or lime, and only with temporary beacons that

are removed immediately after the end of the test; the promotion of collective public transport for the transfer of participants, selective separation of waste both at the finish line and in the supplies, through suitable containers to facilitate their collection and the prohibition of dumping liquid or solid waste out of the points destined for this purpose, being able to be disqualified any participant who breaches this precept. Also, the runners are offered reused portable water accessible by means of drums intended for each participant to fill their own container (glass, bottle or water bag). Glasses and bottles are not provided to participants and refreshments with unpackaged food and peeled fruit, and with the use of cutlery and cardboard plates. All this, says Florentino Guzmán Plasencia, with the objective of “consolidating the environ-mental commitment at the local and island level but also globally, taking measures aimed at the fight against
climate change”. The Santa Cruz Extreme in the Anaga Rural Park already exceeds 600 registered. This mountain test has different distances that allow a varied offer to lovers of this discipline. Its offer starts from a marathon of 49 km, a half marathon of 26 km and another of 15 km. This sporting event incorporated a
new modality and thus this year the “II International Mountain Racing Championship with Joëlette” will be held, in a 9 km course that will start from the Los Catalanes farmhouse, a challenge in teams of four people, three crew members and their passenger with reduced mobility.
The event was once again a great festival of inclusive, equal and solidarity sport with the special participation of prominent local athletes such as Ayoze Pérez or the Guinness Record holder on an exercise bike, Miguel Ángel Castro, who pushed cars of different adapted riders . Cabrera Galindo flew again over the hard circuit that ran through the most emblematic streets of the majestic old town of La Orotava. The Gran Canarian athlete triumphed by stopping the watch in a stratospheric time of 26 minutes and 10 seconds, at an average of 3:16 a kilometre. Behind him was a hard battle to reach the other two steps of
the podium that finally went to Saúl Castro (28:40) and Pedro Rodríguez (28:42) who were a little faster on arrival than Antonio Martín (28: Four. Five). Among the girls the fastest was Irene Lorenzo (34:29) and from behind came Estefanía Luis (36:16) as second classified and Miriam Gambín (36:51) to close the test podium. Antonio Müller was the fastest in the adapted race where there was a great turnout. The members of the Sevillian club Carros de Fuego enjoyed this ninth edition as guests and soaked in the spectacular atmosphere of a race that is already looking ahead a very special event, its tenth anniversary to be celebrated in 2020.
EL ROSARIO
Diving club honoured for 20 years of success
A
Tenerife diving club has been commended for its success on the occasion of its 20th anniversary.
The Mayor of El Rosario, Escolástico Gil received the director of the Diving Club “El Pejín”, Manuel Beltrán. The club, based in Tabaiba since 1999, has been an integral part of promoting the coast around El Rosario during these two decades. It has initiated traditions such as the burning of the floating bonfire on the occasion of the San Juan festivites and the sinking of the wreck of Tabaiba, which allowed the increase of the aquatic flora and fauna in this area. Sr. Gil presented a commemorative painting in recognition of the 20 years of the club and its dedication to teaching diving, helping conserve the marine environment and sharing all the knowledge acquired throughout its long history.
Q1 2019 foreign demand for property in Spain: first decline since the recovery began
T
HE number of Spanish homes acquired by foreign buyers declined in the first quarter compared to the same period last year – the first annualised decline in any quarter since foreign demand started to recover back in 2010, four years before local demand began to recover.
The number of property sales deeds registered in the Spanish land register by a foreign buyer in the first quarter of this year numbered 16,331, according to the latest report by Spain’s Association of Land Registrars. That compares to 16,833 a year before, a decline of 3%.
The biggest number of buyers came from the UK (2,249), followed by France (1,232) and Germany (1,124). By countr y all the big European markets decline together in Q1, the first time that has happened since the crisis. Sweden led the way down with a slump of 35% compared to last year, followed by Belgium, Germany, the UK and France all on the skids. These are the main markets for holidayhomes on the Spanish coast. The increase in demand from countries like Morocco, China, Algeria, and Romania is driven by economic migrants and Spanish Golden Visa investors, who do not normally buy homes in the holiday resorts of the coast. Local demand grew by 4.8% in the same period to 117,529 homes sales inscribed in the register. As a result the market share of foreign buyers dipped slightly to 12%. It looks like foreign demand
for second homes in Spain is going soft. After about nine years of growth there was bound to come a time when demand cooled off, but it doesn’t bode well for all the new developments on the Spanish coast targeting
European holiday-home buyers. The factors driving the change in demand will vary from market to market. If there are any factors in common they might include high property prices in Spain now that prices have recovered
from crisis lows, high transaction costs, bureaucratic hurdles and lack of market transparency. The trend in foreign demand is clearly downwards and looks set to continue so in the next few quarters at least.
