FEARS FOR 512 JOBS

AS RYANAIR CONFIRM “DEVASTATING” BASE CLOSURES Strikes over Tenerife south, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote decision

R

YANAIR has confirmed the news unions were dreading. The low-cost airline will close its bases in Tenerife south, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Girona in January. The company is now preparing a collective dismissal of the 512 employees at these airports, according to officials with the USO. The union had already called strike action in anticipation of the announcement which came last Friday. In an email to the staff, Ryanair confirmed the bases will close on Januar y 8th, 2020. To date, the unions, USO and Sictpla, which represent Ryanair’s passenger cabin (TCP) crew, had planned a strike for days September 1, 2, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27 and 29 to try to avoid closing those bases. Organisation secretary of USO Ryanair, Jairo Gonzalo said: “Confirmation of the intentions of the Irish low-cost airline has occurred while the unions and management negotiated the minimum services for these ten days of strikes.” The union has estimated at 512 the possible layoffs that would be carried out if the closure of the Ryanair facilities were carried out, since among cabin crew and pilots there are 164 employees in Girona, 156 in Tenerife south, 110 in Gran Canaria and 82 in Lanzarote In the email sent to Ryanair employees, the company justifies these closures due to delays in the delivery of Max aircraft, the effects of a possible ‘hard’ Brexit and the

41% decrease in profits in the first four months of the year with respect to two years ago. In addition, in the letter signed by Human Resources Manager Lisa McCormack, the airline says it will tr y to “minimise job losses” as a result of such closures through “transfers.” The USO union claims Ryanair is “dismantling” its bases in Spain because applying Spanish labour legislation “is more expensive than hiring new crews” through other companies where conditions are “more precarious.” Sr. Gonzalo says that “closures and dismissals are not justified” and that the Irish company will have to give explanations to the Spanish authorities. USO has called on the administration to force Ryanair to comply with the law and have described the situation as “teasing. They have also asked the Ministry of Development to decide on the minimum services for the ten day strikes planned in September, after not reaching an agreement. Talks broke down after more than seven hours of meeting at the Interconfederal Mediation and Arbitration Service (SIMA). The strikes have been called for all 13 Ryanair bases in Spain. A Ryanair spokesperson said: “As announced on 16th

July, due to the late delivery of up to 30 Boeing MAX aircraft this winter a number of Ryanair

bases will be cut or closed this winter. These consultations are taking place with our people

at affected bases currently. No routes will be affected as they will be served by flights from

other bases from November when the winter schedule starts.”

HEARTBROKEN FAMILY ISSUE SPECIAL THANKYOU

T

HE family of a 17-year-old girl who died in a tragic accident whilst on holiday in Tenerife have thanked the generosity of fund-raisers who raised more than 10,000 pounds to fly her body back to the UK.

Leah Wilson from Somerset, described as “beautiful, bright and full of dreams”, is understood to have drowned in a villa pool. She may have hit her head or chin whilst diving in. Her heartbroken family and friends launched an appeal to help with repatriation and funeral costs and were stunned when the money was raised in a matter of days. They say: “Leah was only 17, she was loved by so many people and will be so sadly missed. The funds will go straight towards bringing her home, but anything more will go towards the funeral and any other expenses the family will need to cover. We would like to say thank you to each and ever yone of you who has supported us, Leah’s loved ones, through this difficult time. You have all been so generous and we cannot be more grateful.”

TECHNICAL COMMITTEE

Cabildo declares war on termites with new action plan

T

ENERIFE Cabildo has an initial sum of 270,000 euros to eradicate the plague of termites affecting the municipalities of La Laguna, Tacoronte and Tegueste.

This was agreed in the working meeting that the insular advisor of Natural Environment Management and Security, Isabel García, and the Regional Deputy Minister of Transition Ecological, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning, Miguel Ángel Pérez, had with technicians and government officials of the Canary Islands, the island corporation and the affected municipalities to set deadlines and the main lines of action that will be taken to combat this problem. Of this amount, 52 per cent (about 140,000 euros) comes from the Cabildo, while the other 48 percent (about 130,000) will be provided by the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Planning Territorial. During the meeting, the administrations involved also agreed to create a technical committee of experts, led by the Island Council, which will be

responsible for monitoring the work. This is a first insular action with the support of the regional Government and town halls, which will be extended over the next four years, until the control and extinction of the termite. Citizens are asked for their collaboration to address the problem in all its dimensions, transferring any indication of appearance of this type to the municipalities. The first planned actions will focus on limiting a perimeter of safety of the area affected by this species through the tracks and public spaces to continue with eradication, control and species surveillance. Isabel García said: “We are already working with the public company Tragsa in an imme-

HE beach at the port in Las Galletas was closed for 24 hours whilst tests were carried out on the water quality.

Bathing was banned on August 21st when the presence of the enterococcus bacteria was found in samples. However, the levels later decreased significantly in the subsequent results until reaching permitted situation. The ban was lifted at 12.30pm the following day. “The Health Inspectorate has lifted the ban on bathing at the beach and the Las Galletas pier, today Thursday, at 12.30 pm, after knowing the results of the analysis of water samples, taken this morning, which indicate normal parameters and in perfect condition for bathing,” said a spokesman for Arona council. “The tests carried out by both the city council technicians and by the health inspectors confirm that the water has the correct values, which guarantees the safety of the users. We are very aware of our coast. For more than four years, we have carried out our own tests every week, through the municipal sanitation company and this helps us quickly detect any incident. ”

diate action plan to put baits on the perimeter of the affected areas.” In addition, the department of agriculture of the Cabildo assumes the task of informing and advising farmers and residents about how to deal with the problem through the implementation of various dissemination campaigns. In this sense, the councillor reminds citizens that the area of Natural Environment and Security Management has published a dossier with different recommendations that can be consulted through its website. “Experts agree that it is time to stop the progress of this species and eradicate it, so it is important to transfer a message of tranquility to

residents to avoid unnecessary alarm,” she added. Deputy Minister for the Fight against Climate Change of the Government of the Canary Islands, Miguel Ángel Pérez, stressed the importance of “work in a coordinated manner and joining forces between all administrations involved in this problem in order to eradicate it as soon as possible and definitively. ” Both the Cabildo and the Canary Islands Government have committed to developing a specific long-term financing programme and contemplate the possibility of including more money in the budgets for 2020 to solve this issue.

ACTION PLAN

Santa Cruz sets its sights on noise pollution

S

ANTA Cruz council has signalled its intention to crackdown on noise to provide a better environment for local residents and visitors.

The governing board has approved the Action Plan for the Improvement of the Sound Environment, which will now be submitted to public exhibition for a month and that involves the implementation of “corrective, preventive and other actions”. The Plan includes seven lines of action, including those related to mobility and transport infrastructure, the cause of greater exposure to environmental noise in the city. It also includes preventive actions for the improvement of the sound environment in the municipality incorporating the acoustic variable as essential in the projects of land management, urban planning and building to achieve, among other objectives,

sufficient acoustic quality in buildings sensitive to noise. Another objective is to promote the existence and proximity to the population of public spaces with a calm and pleasant atmosphere, as an objective integrated in the objectives of a healthy city, as well as to protect and preserve natural spaces from noise. Public information and awareness raising actions are also planned. A municipal noise pollution information system will then be created and awareness campaigns will be launched. The Plan will be submitted to public opinion for a month to incorporate, where appropriate, the suggestions that are presented, before their final approval by the council.

EVACUATION TOLL WAS 10,000

After the fire: Gran Canaria investigates cause of devastating mountain blaze

F

IRE precaution alerts have been active in the Canary Islands during the soaring temperatures and given the devastation caused by the mountain fire in Gran Canaria, tourists and local residents are being urged to take very special care. More than 12,000 hectares was destroyed in the blaze which started on Saturday, August 17th and was only declared under control last Wednesday. At one stage, 10,000 people were evacuated from their homes in the mountain villages of six municipalities and had to spend the nights either with families or in municipal facilities such as sports centres and village halls. Thanks to the amazing work

of the fire-fighting team, there were no fatalities or serious injuries. The authorities know that some properties were burnt to the ground but at this stage, it is not possible to quantify how many and the actual cost of the damage. This was the biggest-ever fire in Spain since 2012. The municipalities affected were Valleseco, Moya, Gáldar, Agaete, San Mateo, Artenara and Tejeda. These are all in the mountain region and the

tourist areas of the island were not involved, with holiday flights not interfered with. The effect on the landscape of Gran Canaria has, of course, been devastating and it will take years to rectify. The cause of the fire is now being investigated but that too could take months to conclude. Agents of the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard and experts of the Forest Fire Investigation Brigade (BRIFF) of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria are keeping several lines of investigation open. Once they find the cause of

the fire, the investigation will focus on who caused it. It started next to an electric turret in the Andén ravine in the municipality of Valleseco. This area has been devastated which will hamper the work. Residents and visitors are being urged to take special notice of any bans in force in the countryside and mountains on any of the islands and, of course, to avoid throwing matches or cigarettes down or having barbecues if not authorised. New fires have been flaring up, not just in Gran Canaria, but also in Tenerife due to the very dry conditions but these

fires have been contained. Not surprisingly, the work of the emergency personnel has been widely praised, including by Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez who flew to Gran Canaria to see the devastation for himself. It is being recommended that the men and women involved receive the highest bravery awards. In an emotional message, Gran Canaria’s Cabildo posted this thankyou: “We have been

shaken by fires that threatened the lives of 15,000 people and destroyed more than 12,000 hectares of the heart of Gran Canaria. Avoiding the loss of life and recognition of the work done is what has helped us resist. To all our people, thank you.” One of the most moving sights was when people crowded a beach and gave the pilots of the water planes a standing ovation as they flew back to their bases.

Santa Cruz pledges to renovate all the city’s green areas

STRONG CONNECTION

New British Ambassador Hugh Elliott arrives in Spain

LA ESTRELLA

S

ANTA Cruz city council has approved the tender for the renovation of La Estrella Park with a budget of more than one million euros.

The works have a base budget of 1,055,398 euros, will begin at the beginning of next year and will have an execution period of eleven months. The Parque de la Estrella is located in Santa María del Mar and this project had been stagnant for nearly a year. The main objective of the action is to recover a park of vital importance and size for the residents of the southwest and, in addition, to set up a place that must be in correct conditions for the enjoyment and use of all the inhabitants of this area. “This is an indispensable space with enormous potential that must be ready as soon as possible so that the residents of the southwest can enjoy this green area abandoned for many years,” said the councillor for community welfare, José Ángel Martín, who added that since the first day of the legislature they have worked to unblock this important project. Sr. Martín said that the recovery of the green areas of the city is one of the main objectives of the session and a line that the Mayor of the city, Patricia Hernández, has marked as a priority. The councillor explained that during the first phase, which is the one with the main investment, a reorganisation of the spaces will be undertaken and work will be carried out

both in the park’s landscape spaces and in the park’s walks. Among the main actions also highlights the adequacy of the spaces for walking, which are currently in a state not suitable for use. “We must make the roads, an issue that seems obvious, but it is currently impossible to tour the park,” said José Ángel Martín. Likewise, a children’s space and a kiosk will be launched that will serve the citizens. ” We are very aware that the renovation and improvement of this space is very necessar y both for the residents of Santa María del Mar and for the entire southwest, who will be able to enjoy this wonderful enclave once the works are finished,”concluded the councilor.

H

UGH Elliott, a member of the UK’s Diplomatic Service since 1989, succeeds Simon Manley as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain and non-resident Ambassador to Andorra. The Ambassador takes up this new role having previously been Director of Communications in the Department for Exiting the European Union. On his arrival, Hugh Elliott said: “With a wealth of cultural, commercial, and people-to-people links, the relationship between the UK and Spain is like no other, and I am proud and honoured to represent my Queen and country here in Spain.” For the Ambassador, this

strong connection with Spain has been an important part of his life for decades. “I met my wife Toñi while working as an English teacher at the University of Salamanca, Spain was my first diplomatic posting in the nineties and my two children were born in Madrid. I can understand why so many UK nationals have chosen to make Spain their home,” he said. He added that “We are approaching an important

milestone as the UK prepares to leave the European Union on 31 October”. His message was one of reassurance to UK nationals currently living in Spain that “We’ve given EU citizens living in the UK the legal certainty of their right to live and remain in the United Kingdom. And I’m ver y pleased that the Spanish Government has put in place, through the Royal Decree, the same guarantees for British citizens in Spain.” Mr Elliott acknowledged that people have questions and concerns, and undertook that he and his team would be working hard to answer them.

He also urged people to sign up to the Living in Guide (gov.uk/living-in-spain) where they will find the latest, accurate information on Brexit. Two key actions that UK nationals should do now is to ensure that they are correctly registered as a resident and registered for healthcare as a resident. A video message from Hugh Elliott to UK nationals can be found at https://www.facebook.com/BritsInSpain/videos/ 1100205536841750/ Mr Elliott can be followed on Twitter @HughElliottUK.

Relief at last for Cabo Blanco flooding RAVINE WORK

A

RONA council has launched the process of awarding the channeling of the El Lere ravine as it passes through calle El Horno, in Cabo Blanco.

The environment department says this is a historical demand of the population, due to the different overflows that develop in

episodes of heavy rains. The project will benefit the stretch of the Cabo Blanco ravine, which takes the name of El Lere, where inadequate channeling causes continuous flooding of the road, when

heavy rains occur, leaving the neighbuorhood incommunicado, through the area of the Calle el Horno. The plan, which has a maximum tender budget of just over 150,000 euros, follows the recommendations made by the Insular Council of Waters on the current channeling of the ravine in the lower area of Cabo Blanco. An action within the framework of the #AronaAvanza program with which other areas of equal size have been improved, such as the La Tosca ravine in Valle San The Mayor of Arona said: “This tender is of great importance to be able to move forward with the project, and

avoid the floods that are caused by heavy rains and, above all, the isolation of residents, who had been pressing for many years for a solution to this problem. Once the work has been awarded, we will be able to start the work that guarantees a better quality of life for the residents of the area.” Councillor for the environment, José Luis Gómez, stressed that “the situation facing the residents of the El Lere ravine is a problem of historical demand that the government group proposes to solve and that, thanks to this tender, we are closer to being able to solve, fulfilling the objectives set. ”

Facelift and new QR codes for capital’s 100 sculptures

Monuments in Santa Cruz are to get a much-needed facelift

T

HE city council’s culture department will hire a service for cleaning and maintenance of municipal sculptures that embellish the city. In addition, QR codes with detailed information of the works will be installed. There are more than 100sculptures in the capital and they will be subjected to an exhaustive task of cleaning and maintenance. For this purpose, the tendering works for the aforementioned services have already begun. First deputy mayor and councillor for culture and historical heritage, Matilde Zambudio, said cleaning and maintaining the cultural heritage of Santa Cruz is a priority. Taking advantage of these works, QR reader codes will be installed that will contain detailed references of the sculpture and its author. The information will be given in several languages. All this information will be included for the first time on the website of the Santa Cruz

City Council thanks to a catalogue that will also contain sculptural routes throughout the municipality. In addition, permission has been given for the relocation of the sculpture “Courage” by the Canarian artist Manuel Bethencourt Santana in an area near the Plaza de España. “Courage” is a tribute to those who in 1797 repelled the attack of the English admiral Nelson to the capital of Tenerife. Matilde Zambudio said: “The cultural heritage of Santa Cruz de Tenerife must be treated as it deserves, as it is the living expression of the essence of the city.” The capital of Tenerife has in its streets works by artists such as Miró, Henry Moore and Óscar Domínguez.

MAN ARRESTED

Shop assistant threatened with scissors

T

HERE was drama in La Laguna when a shop assistant was threatened with a pair of scissors.

The man, who was later arrested, demanded cash from the till but the quick-thinking assistant told him she had just opened up and had no cash. The suspect then ran of but was found nearby by the police. He is also believed to have been responsible for a string of vandalism cases in which 24 vehicles parked in La Laguna were attacked. In most cases, the wing mirrors were smashed.

POLICE RECORD

Man arrested for series of Arona burglaries N

ATIONAL Police arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of carrying out seven robberies in holiday homes and establishments in

Arona.

The investigation began after a Belgian citizen on holiday in Tenerife reported a burglary. The culprit had forced a window whilst she was out and stole different effects that were inside; jewellery, mobile phone devices, image and sound equipment, 150 euros in cash and credit cards. The burglary presented similar characteristics to others carried out in Arona, both in holiday homes and businesses. In all cases, the items stolen were jewels, technology devices and cash. In one of the businesses, the value of the stolen computer terminal and the tablet exceeded 2000 euros, apart from the damage caused . Police said the man arrested has a police record and managed to evade them for some time because he lacked a fixed address and frequently changed the place where he spent the night .

Santa Cruz takes action over bus lane flow

NEW STRIPS

S

ANTA Cruz is to place deterrents to improve the mobility of the Bus-VAO lane of Avenida Bélgica-San Sebastián.

The works will begin at the end of August and will have a cost for the consistory of 18,800 euros. Councillor for community welfare and public services of the city council, José Ángel

Martín, said the estimated duration of the action will not exceed six weeks and stressed that the main objective is to improve mobility, especially the public transport service. The city council technicians have studied what type of deterrent was more suited to the needs of the lane and have chosen to implement the “less aggressive” to facilitate, for example, the overtaking of

buses that are dropping passengers or facilitating traffic of ambulances in emergency service. The option chosen is the placement of rubber delimiters of 100x14x5 centimetres and, in Sr. Martin’s opinion, will improve urban transport on these roads. In this way, technicians have ruled out the use of the delimiter called “shark fin”

because in their opinion it could be an important barrier for vehicles to pass through and, on certain occasions, inconveniences for the circulation of authorised vehicles or vehicles of emergencies The company to which this work has been awarded is Signoizaciones Bahillo, S.L. and the total amount amounts to 18,851.35 euros.

These are non-lethal weapons that use temporary electrical discharge of high voltage and low current in situations of risk of their physical integrity. Specifically, the Local Police Corps is provided with four laser guns, one of them model X26 and three model M18. These devices carry a screen that offers data instantly, as well as software that allows the storage of all kinds of information about their own use, leaving a history of data about it such as date, time, battery status.

As for the training received by the Local Police, it is about making them know in depth the corresponding protocol of use, moments in which it can be done, what risks it entails and the decision of its use as a self-protective measure to the agent himself. It should be noted that these are models approved by the Ministry of the Interior and have the approval of their use by the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands for intervention groups.

Puerto hotel reopens its doors after extensive renovation

T

HE RIU Garoé Hotel, a four-star hotel establishment located in Puerto de la Cruz and associated with Ashotel, has recently reopened after a two and a half month closure for a complete renovation.

The reform has mainly focused on completely renovating all rooms, main restaurant and certain kitchen areas. A solarium chillout terrace with Balinese beds has also been opened on the third floor. The hotel is part of the catalogue of RIU Hotels & Resorts, but independently owned and managed, a success formula that both parties have kept active since its opening in 2002. The RIU Garoé has a clientele of mostly German origin, followed by English, Spanish and French, predominantly the holiday tourist, and to a lesser extent the client of events and congresses. The reform of the RIU Garoé adds a new value to the renewal strategy of Puerto de la Cruz, promoted not only by the business sector, but by public institutions such as Puerto council, and Tenerife Cabildo, coordinated by the Urban Rehabilitation Consortium of Puerto de la Cruz, in which the inter-administrative public sector and the private sector participate. “This renovation successfully completes the ambitious and exciting challenge of providing the establishment with modern, current, high quality and high comfort facilities, friendly to the environment and capable of satisfying our most demanding clientele; an effort that the family has assumed with great enthusiasm and that it trusts helps to boost the tourist city par excellence of Puerto de la Cruz, ” said the owner, Juan Manuel Farrais. The hotel has 190 rooms of different categories, all with balconies overlooking the sea or the Teide. In this renovation of facilities, a new spa with a jet circuit pool, jacuzzi, cold well, sensation showers, salt sauna, Finnish sauna and steam bath, as well as a hot bed area or aesthetic cabins, has been launched. And beauty. In addition, the complex has a main buffet restaurant, as well as two bars, one of them next to the pool. The hotel staff consists of about 110 workers, 95% of them of local origin (Valle de La Orotava), which highlights the company’s commitment to local, Tenerife and Canary Islands professionals, in general. The establishment has been distinguished with numerous awards given by its clients and for its good environmental practices.

Wake room project is progressing, says Granadilla

G

RANADILL A council has dismisssed “scaremongering” over the project to provide a wake room in the town and says work on the one million euro project is expected to begin in September. Progress had been called into question by Ciudadanos but councillor for works, María Concepción Cabrera Venero stressed: “Thanks to the current group of government and its commitment, the demanded and necessary facility may soon be a reality for the residents of the centre.” A new architect is in charge of the project, she added. The provision of a wake room has had a long journey since planning began in the last quarter of 2016 and for which it has been necessary

to modify the current PGO of 2005, which only allowed the installation of equipment destined to mortuary services within the scope of the municipal cemeter y and adjacent lands. During the first months of 2018, the plot was acquired by the council on which the future funeral home will be built, with an economic investment of 92,838.70 euros for the purchase of the plot. The council hopes that San Isidro will also get a wake room in due course.

The vandalism also affected the carpet of the pavilion and the stands. The three children involved, 13, 14 and 15 years old, were detained until their parents were located. Technicians from the department of sport have been assessing the damage and drawing up a report on what remedial action needs to be done. The city council said it had to bring in security guards for the hours after the attack because the sports centre was still open.

T

ENERIFE Cabildo has sent out a warning to people not to use the Chinese-type lighted lanterns during the current fire alert crisis.

The authority says they are a real danger to the tinderbox conditions of all the islands and could very easily start a serious blaze. The warning was posted on the authority’s Twitter site after one of these lanterns was found in the Teide National Park. “The lantern seen in the image fell on the @pnteide. An object that can cause forest fires. Given the high temperatures that are affecting the island, we call on the citizens to not use these lanterns during these days,” said the bulletin.

Original ceramic street signs restored in La Orotava

L

A Orotava council has recently completed the restoration of the old ceramic signs that the municipality possesses in various streets of the historic centre. It is an initiative approved by the Municipal Heritage Council which aims to end the image of deterioration that some of these signs presented by missing, in most cases, a letter, according to councillor Narciso Pérez. The ceramic signs had their origin in the first third of the 20th century, when they in turn replaced others billed in similar material that differed in terms of size and content since those included the type of road in question. Sr. Perez stresses that these elements have their heritage importance, “because they are a unique and distinctive element of the urban image of La Orotava on the roads in which they are located.” According to the data of the study carried out by the Municipal Historical Heritage technician, a total of 21 original ceramic signs are

conserved, all configured by individual ceramic pieces corresponding to each letter. Of those 21, eleven are in perfect condition, whilst ten needed attention. The works have consisted mainly in the replacement of the missing or partially affected and unrecoverable letters, through their recomposition and painting. The work has been carried out through a company specialised in this type of interventions, JPH Thematizations. “With this action, we have managed to recover these elements so characteristic of the Orotavense historical centre and end the image of missing letters, thus improving the image of the historical site. These signs are part of the past and lively histor y of the municipality,” said the councillor.

few weeks ago, one of our staff arrived at K9, ready for a new day, and found this young boy tied up outside the kennels. She quickly came to learn just how sweet and friendly this boy is. He was called Mufasa. He had no chip so we have no idea where he came from or what is background is. Mufasa is about 1 year old and loves to play and be around humans. A lot of our walkers love to take him out for his daily walk, and he is a pleasure to walk. He has unusual colouring and is a mix breed and is a medium sized dog. He is one of the friendliest, happiest boys who I have ever come across and loves nothing more than playing and being around loving humans. The shelter environment can be stressful but this young boy takes it all in his stride. Mufasa has been with us a couple of months now and in that time has seen 2 kennel mates go to their forever homes. He has shared with 2 female dogs, who he seems to get on best with but currently

German students help out at Accion del Sol

W

ITH the sharp rise in temperatures, we would like to remind you to ensure that your dog has sufficient water and shade and is only walked early in the morning and later in the day to avoid the hot pavements which can burn their paws.

We have again had German students from Ludwigshafen helping us at the refuge for the last two weeks. The dogs have had a great time being pampered, walked, bathed and brushed . The students were also very lucky to be taken diving with the Tenerife Diving Acadamy in Abadas who also help and support the refuge in so many ways for which we are extremely grateful. The diving lesson was to teach the students about the harmful effects of pollution in the sea with all the plastic and rubbish that are killing our fish and polluting our seas. We do ask you that when you are enjoying your trip to the beach please do help this enormous worldwide problem and collect any discarded rubbish that you see. Every little bit helps to make the world a cleaner place. Please do call the refuge on 664321219 or 602463242 between the hours of 8am -17.00 if you can help in any way. We are always in need of tinned dog food for our older dogs, puppy milk, blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. If you have any of the above to spare they would be very much appreciated at the refuge, or visit Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons from 14.00-17.00pm and Saturdays 13.00- 16.00.

he is sharing with one of new arrivals Kahl, who is very affectionate and playful puppy, also male. Mufasa is intelligent and has been trained before from whatever home he came from. He waits patiently to be fed and always comes when you call him, so he does have good recall. When he is outside, he is very calm, sweet and is not really bothered by other dogs. He likes to get out for walks, and most days he gets out for 2 or 3 walks due to his lovable nature and popularity among the volunteers. He thrives on company, so when his first kennel mate got adopted, he was a little bit lost and confused. We were able to match him quickly with

another female, but she also got adopted quite quickly, leaving Mufasa, once again, lost and confused. When will he get his second chance at his forever home? He deserves a second chance. He is so

handsome and so friendly, that we at K9, are really hoping his chance comes very soon. You can meet him everyday at the shelter and take him out for a walk. He is a lot of fun and is waiting for you to meet him!

La Gomera targets the Benelux countries

L

A Gomera is to have tourism representation agencies in Benelux (Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg) and France for the first time.

This joins the countries of Germany, Switzerland and Austria, where promotions are already taking place. Tourism councillor, María Isabel Méndez said tourist representatives will carry out, among others, the organisation and participation of La Gomera in events for the promotion of the destination aimed at the public, the management of press releases in prominent media of the sector in each country, as well as the organisation of press trips to the island. In addition, they will be responsible for carrying out a follow-up of the denomination, positioning and image of La Gomera in each market, the implementation of advertising insertions and the development of promotional actions on the Internet. “This is an action that the Cabildo has been developing for several years and is a very powerful tourist promotion tool since it allows the island to be represented in the most important events of this sector, as well as to develop promotional actions more direct, different and personalized, from within the market itself ,” she explained.

The selection has been carried out by an external committee of experts appointed for this purpose, to which 95 proposals were submitted. The resolution, still of a provisional nature, includes aid for the production of six cinematographic films and television series, and eight short films, as well as seven other projects under development. Hotels “are breaching rules for heating swimming”

E

NVIRONMENTAL groups have denounced the use of fossil fuels to heat hotel pools in the Canary Islands.

Several organisations claim establishments in the archipelago violate the regulations by using sources such as diesel or propane to increase the water temperature. These practices, they say, are going in the opposite direction to the guidelines to combat the effects of global warming. Various environmental associations begin to point to the main industr y of the archipelago: tourism, according to a report in the Spanish newspaper Diario de Avisos. Specifically, they warn of the use of fossil fuels in certain hotel facilities of the islands for the heating of outdoor swimming pools, in breach, they claim, of the Regulation of Thermal Installations in Buildings, which establishes “express prohibitions” on the

use of fuels such as diesel or propane in open spaces because of its effects on health. Representatives of several environmental groups say the breach of this rule is considered a ver y serious infraction, and the sanctions can reach up to 100 million euros, in addition to the suspension of the activity license. They say it is vital that public administrations ensure compliance with the standards through inspection services. The Youth for Climate Platform, which represents the Fridays for the Future movement, led by Greta Thunberg, already has the support of more than 100 social groups, both from the province of Tenerife and Las Palmas to support the World Climate Strike on September 27.

German walkers become relic hunters!

ANCIENT FIND

T

WO German tourists became relic hunters when they found an ancient piece of pottery whilst out walking in La Palma.

Eric and Helen Hoffstetter have now presented the fragment of pre-Hispanic ceramics to the Benahorita Archaeological Museum. They discovered it a month ago on the path that runs along the edges of La Caldera de Taburiente as it passes through the Punta de Los Roques. Minister of Culture and Historical Heritage of the Cabildo, Jovita Monterrey, thanked them for their donation, thus recovering a piece of the island’s past that would otherwise have been

lost. She took the opportunity to “encourage other people who keep materials in their homes, however small, to deliver them to the Benahoarita Archaeological Museum, because they can be unique objects, with unknown decorations or belonging to new sites.” Regarding the ceramic piece, the archaeologist and director of the Archaeological

Museum, Jorge Pais said it was decorated with motifs in the form of concentric ova and semicircles. He said the ceramic fragment had been located in an area of great archaeological wealth in which there had been other finds, including the remains of cabins and pastoral shelters, a pile of stones and rock engravings.

POOR INFRASTRUCTURE

Fuerteventura’s heritage is neglected, says Cabildo

F

UERTEVENTURA needs to make more of its cultural heritage but there are parts of the island which are falling to bits, it has been claimed.

The Cabildo’s culture councillor Andrés Briansó said the new government team had to make this issue a priority as tourists were being denied the chance to see this side of the island’s charms. “Fuerteventura has a great cultural and heritage wealth that deserves maximum defence and dissemination Cabildo’s culture councillor Andrés Briansó and of which we can be very proud,”he says. “However, we have unprotected environments, infrastructure in poor condition and a long list of problems that they do not allow the population to access our heritage and value it, so we are laying the groundwork to reverse this situation. ” The Cabildo has announced a number of plans, including restructuring of the museum network and the promotion of archaeological and heritage research of the island, among other measures. The Casa Alta de Tindaya will also be closed for a temporary period so it can be transformed into an interpretation centre to make the most of the natural monument. “We are aware of being faced with a complicated challenge, due to the abandonment and neglect of recent years in relation to these interpretation centres but the protection and dissemination of cultural heritage is a priority in the new group of government,” he pledged.

Binter announces new flights to mainland

UNLICENSED JOURNEY

Horse is found in camper van in hold of B ferry to Canaries

INTER will connect the Canary Islands on a regular basis with the airports of Pamplona, Zaragoza and Murcia in the next winter sea-

son.

The airline will connect by air twice a week to the Canary Islands with each of the three new national destinations, with flights between two and a half hours and three hours long. “Our commitment to these destinations is due to their attractiveness and the lack of regular direct links throughout the year, “ said a spokesman. “We have already worked with the authorities of the different regions to schedule flights in a way that allows the enjoyment of the main characteristics of each one of them.”

T

HE Nature Protection Service of the Civil Guard in Lanzarote has denounced a person who was transporting a small horse inside a camper van in the hold of a ship travelling between Huelva and the Canaries. The Civil Guard was alerted by the shipping company itself after the crew discovered the breach. Seprona officers waited for the ship to arrive at 2.30pm on August 11th at the Los Mármoles dock, in the town of Arrecife, Lanzarote. They located the family-type vehicle that concealed a pony inside and confirmed it was not suitable for the transfer of animals and failed to comply with safety measures and sanitary hygienic conditions for animal transport. Apparently, the animal came from Holland, making the journey to Huelva by land by vehicle and then by sea to its final destination on the island of Tenerife, prior to a stopover in Lanzarote.

“All this journey was carried out irregularly in the rear passenger compartment of the vehicle without complying with the corresponding permits for the movement of the animal, and also violated the regulations on the transport of the animal, also giving the circumstance that the animal lacked boat ticket for the transfer of animals, ”said the Civil Guard. Long distance animal transport is a complex operation. Therefore, the person in charge was denounced for several infractions of the Animal Health Law, and to the Royal Decree on Animal Health and Protection Regulations during transport.

La Palma wants new telescope rather than Hawaii

T

ISLAND BID

HE Social Council of La Palma has agreed to support the possible installation of the Thirty Metre Telescope (TMT) on the summits of the island of La Palma in the event that the international consortium leading this project chooses not to locate it on the mountain of Mauna Kea, in Hawaii. The body, composed of social and business groups, in addition to prestigious personalities and former presidents of the Cabildo, believes that the installation of an infrastructure of this magnitude on the island will be an important boost for astrophysical research that is being carried out in the island, through the observatory of the Roque de Los Muchachos. They do not believe it will cause any impairment of the preservation of the environmental values of the island. President of the Cabildo, Mariano H. Zapata said La Palma as alternative to Hawaii had “clear and unequivocal support of each and every one of the institutions involved, from the Government of Spain to the municipality of Puntagorda (La Palma) through the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands, the Government of the Canary Islands and the Island Council of La Palma.”

OTELS in Benidorm are hanging up the “full” signs for the first time this year after a U-turn in the popularity of the Costa Blanca despite Brexit and competing destinations. Tourism leaders in the Valencia region say they were stunned to be hitting 95 per cent occupancy and higher between August 15th and August 18th, dates which are effectively the Spanish equivalent of the British bank holiday weekend. Hosbec, the hotel association for Benidorm and the Costa Blanca, says these four days could be the best of the whole year and might help to match the record-breaking 2018. Hosbec, which had earlier forecast a bad year, especially with Brits, says: “These improvements indicate that the 2018 data can almost be matched in terms of hotel occupancy. In terms of income, however, we will be in a somewhat worse scenario than last year because market conditions (competing destinations, Brexit situation in the United Kingdom, falls in German tourism in the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands) have not allowed us to increase prices or exceed

profitability.” In July alone, Benidorm notched up an hotel occupancy of 89 per cent, with the British market remaining practically stable, virtually the same as in 2018. Spanish customers are once again the main market in Benidorm, assuming about 45 per cent of the market share in this period and registering around 247,000 overnight stays. Customers from the United Kingdom remain very stable with respect to the same period of 2018, as 37.6 per cent of travellers staying in hotels in Benidorm are of British origin and in total they have exceeded 207,000 overnight stays. Within the ranking of foreign visitors, Portugal is in second place with 4.6 per cent, with more than 25,000 overnight stays. It is followed by Belgium with 2.6 per cent, Holland with 1.7 per cent, Romania with 1.5 per cent, France with 1.2 per cent and Ireland with one per cent.

AMERICAN CONFERENCE

Pervert “upskirted” Spain pledges support for protection and hundreds of women sustainable use of the in Madrid oceans N S ATIONAL Police have arrested in Madrid one of the largest predators of women’s privacy.

The detainee practised what is knownas “Upskirt” recording unauthorised videos under women’s skirts and dresses - to later publish them on pornographic portals. He was arrested in fraganti in the suburban area of Madrid when he was recording women, placing a backpack on the ground that was strategically coupled with a mobile phone with the activated recording device. “He acted daily and compulsively, recording 29 victims in five days, continuously moving around Madrid to record all the women he could in different environments such as the subway, suburban or supermarkets,” said a police spokesman. The arrested published 283 videos in pornographic portals that had millions of views; 555 victims were identified, some of them minors. It is believed the first video of this type was published in July 2018, although it is unknown if he had previously performed the same activity somewhere else or using another pornographic content web page. The detainee generally captured his victims in busy places such as the subway; then he followed them to the street, even entering with them in supermarkets or stores to get better shots. The suspect is a 53-year-old Colombian man.

PAIN is participating in the third inter-governmental conference, being held in New York until August 30th to develop the Convention for the protection and sustainable use of the oceans.

The commitment of the 193 UN Member States is to close, by the end of 2020, a text that regulates international waters, which account for more than two thirds of all oceans. This is the third meeting of the intergovernmental conference of the four meetings scheduled. The two previous meetings were held in September 2018 and in March/April 2019, and the fourth is due to be held in the second half of 2020. The aim is to approve the new convention at the United Nations Assembly at the end of that year. The issues being discussed in the negotiations include management mechanisms based on geographic zones, including the establishment of marine protection areas such as

those that exist in territorial waters of many States, access to marine genetic resources, the creation of capacity and transfer of marine technology, and the environmental impact assessment in international waters. This event takes place at a time in which threats to the sea and oceans are of increasing concern due to pollution and, in particular, pollution caused by plastic and micro-plastic, climate change, the overexploitation of fishing resources and new technologies that are opening the doors to mining of the ocean beds. The future convention is particularly important for Spain, with a great maritime and fishing

tradition and whose waters host the greatest marine biodiversity in Europe. Furthermore, it is a member of practically all of the international forums that regulate different marine and maritime aspects. In relation to the protection of the marine environment, Spain is the second ranked country in the European Union (EU) in terms of marine waters, behind only Portugal, and hosts the greatest marine biodiversity in Europe, since it is located in three bio-geographic regions with very different characteristics: Mediterranean, Atlantic and Macaronesian.

contributors increased in all branches of tourism: hotel and catering grew by 54,177 contributors (40,663 more contributors in food and drinks services and 13,514 more in accommodation services), other tourism activities grew by 32,979 contributors, and travel agencies saw an increase of 2,512 workers. There has been noteworthy performance of this branch since December 2014, particularly since this activity saw an unbroken reduction in employment figures in the years 2008 to 2014. Last month, the figure for salaried workers in the tourism

sector, which accounts for 81% of the total, rose by 4.1% on the same month of the previous year, while selfemployment (19% of the total) rose by 1.3%. In July, employment rose as a whole for hotel and catering and travel agencies/tourism operators in all autonomous regions. In absolute terms, the greatest increases were posted in Andalusia, Catalonia, the Region of Madrid, the Region of Valencia, Galicia and the Balearic Islands. These six regions account for 78% of the year-on-year increase in absolute terms.

Tourism continues to create more jobs

T

HE number of National Insurance contributors tied to tourism activities grew in July by 3.5 per cent year-on-year, to a total amount of 2,618,636, according to figures published by Turespaña, attached to the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.

This figure is the highest on record in a month of July. The number of jobs tied to tourism activities has grown in the last year by 89,668 workers registered with the system, which account for 13.6% of all contributors to the national economy. State Secretary for Tourism, Isabel Oliver said: “These figures are ver y positive because they show the consolidation of tourism as a source of employment and the government’s efforts to ensure that this is of increasingly higher quality, improving the labour conditions of workers in this sector.” In July, the number of

MENACING MESSAGES

Councils across Spain are victims of hacker who issues death threats P OLICE have been called in after a succession of council Twitter sites in Spain were hacked and death threats posted to the local mayors and council officials. The latest authorities to come under fire are Arona in Tenerife and Palma in Mallorca where experts have had to wipe the site clean because of the menacing messages posted in the cyber attack. Palma council says similar instances have happened in Valencia, Pamplona, Berga and Albacete. “They all share very similar characteristics to that of Palma, containing threats against public representatives, such as the mayor of these locations,” a spokesman confirmed. The council says its Twitter site was hacked in the space of one hour, with tweets posted every five minutes, and has asked the technological research brigade of the National Police of Palma to investigate. One of the death threats said: “There are thousands of ways to do it without anyone knowing anything.” Another pledged: “I know

where you live, where you move, and what is it what do you do, focus carefully.” A statement from Palma council confirmed: “Police have been informed of the usurpation of the municipal

account of twitter as a result of the serious content of the tweets with insults and personal threats against members of the Palma city council, especially the culture councillor and his family.” “The council wants to condemn with all forcefulness not only the illegal usurpation of this twitter account but also the serious threats against

public representatives.” Palma officials have been in contact with Twitter “ to restore normality to municipal social networks and find the culprit.” The accounts of the city councils of Pamplona and Albacete were hacked the following day, with insults and death threats. One of the messages told one councillor: “You have been in power now

for one month. If you don’t change this city, you will find out how to leave your family.” When the Valencia Twitter site was hacked, it showed the message: “This account has been hacked for corruption.” More than 2,000 bogus tweets were posted in just two hours alone. Staff were unable to stop them as the password of the account had also been

changed. Pictures of council officials with threatening messages were also posted on the Pamplona and Albacete sites. After regaining control of its Twitter site, Albacete had its own message for the culprit, posting: “To the hacker, greetings, see you in court!”

NIGHT-TIME ATTACK

Mass tourism campaigners target hire cars in Mallorca

C

AMPAIGNERS against mass tourism in Mallorca have signalled the start of new protests after releasing a video showing nighttime attacks on hire cars. Wearing white plastic suits, with their faces covered with hoods, members of the protest group Arran are shown daubing slogans over a line of parked vehicles and letting tyres down.

They are also pictured smashing a car window with considerable force using what looks like a screwdriver or hammer. The video is clearly attri-

buted to Arran Palma which has been involved in previous tourism attacks in Mallorca, including the storming of a marina restaurant next to luxury yachts in 2018. A group of about 15 campaigners let off coloured flares and showered confetti over terrified customers who thought it was some kind of terrorist attack. The publication of this new video on the social networks is seen as a clear indication of a new wave of protests over mass tourism in the Balearics. Arran says it is not

against tourism but massification which, it says, is ruining the islands, including Mallorca. Last month, campaigners daubed hate messages on an historic building on a popular nudist beach in Mallorca, calling holidaymakers “murderers” and telling them: “You’re not welcome!” Arran says it picked on tourist cars because “there are more than 100,000 cars for rent each year”. “This is saturation, unsustai-

nability, pollution and a clear example of what it means to turn the city into a tourist showcase,” the group claims. The Spanish press says it is “inevitable” that there will be more tourist attacks both in the Balearics and on the mainland this summer as other incidents have already started in Barcelonsa. On Arran Palma’s Twitter site, the campaigners posted the message: “The youth go on the offensive!”

Hotels across Police make 14 arrests after Spain were discovering network clients of smuggling cocaine by sea illegal TV T centre NINE RAIDS

N

DECODER FRAUD

ATIONAL Police agents have dismantled an IPTV centre - internet television protocol system - that fraudulently provided audiovisual content and payment channels. The detainee provided access to content of channels, mostly sports, belonging to different payment platforms. The centre was located in a house in Tarrasa (Barcelona) and among its clients were numerous hotel establishments located throughout the Spanish geography. The investigation began with a complaint that provided data on the irregular service offered from a web page managed from the province of Barcelona. The defendant carried out this activity without the authorisation of the owners of intellectual property rights, receiving in return a predetermined and periodic economic consideration that varied according to the contracted term and the modality of access to the illegal contents. These fraudulent services were marketed through the sale of decoders in which, after payment, the corresponding firmware was inserted that enabled access to various servers. In this way, users had access to content from channels belonging to different payment platforms,

especially sports events. In addition, the defendant used the commercial name of these large content operators to advertise their services. After several steps, the agents arrested the alleged perpetrator of the events and registered his domicile located in the Barcelona town of Tarrasa where the effects related to the illegal activity were found. In addition, police managed to block and cancel the service offered to its customers related to the broadcasting of digital platform content illegally. A total of 4,705 euros were intervened at the address, an amount presumably derived from this illegal activity, and the presence of payment invoices for the illegal service to numerous hotel establishments located throughout the Spanish geography was confirmed. “All this indicates the wide scope of the fraudulent activity carried out by the detainee and the degree of collusion of the different user-clients, which is not limited to individual participation but to other forms of commercialisation,” said a police spokesman.

HE Civil Guard, within the framework of the Mansalva operation, has dismantled a criminal organisation dedicated to introducing cocaine by sea, which it later distributed to different parts of the Iberian peninsula. In the operation, 475 kilos of cocaine have been seized and 14 people arrested: eleven in Pontevedra, two in Valencia and one in Portugal. In the nine raids carried out, the Civil Guard also intervened 12,000 euros in cash, 12 satellite phones, four vehicles equipped with double bottoms and a trailer equipped with a sophisticated hydraulic hiding system, in which the organisation moved more of 300 kilos of cocaine. Also, the Civil Guard has discovered an indoor marijuana plantation with a 1,000 plants. Investigations began last year when Civil Guard specialists in the fight against organised crime learned of the existence of a criminal group based in Pontevedra, made up of people with a history of drug trafficking. In July last year, the investigation frustrated the delivery of more than 300 kilos of cocaine that had been transferred from Galicia to Valencia. There the drug was intervened in a garage in the town of Quart de Poblet

(Valencia), when it was being guarded by two members of the organisation, who were arrested at that time. Subsequently, advances in research frustrated another delivery of 175 kilograms of cocaine in Portugal, which had been transferred from the province of Pontevedra. The Civil Guard discovered the system used by the organisation, consisting of a trailer, apparently empty, but equipped with a sophisticated hydraulic system that concealed a double bottom with capacity for more than 300 kilograms. Several shuttle vehicles lowered the cargo. The organisation had very advanced contacts and preparations for the introduction of a significant amount of cocaine that, by sea, would arrive in Galicia from South

ESTEPONA DECISION

Record-breaking urban slide is finally demolished S PAIN’S longest-ever urban slide has now been demolished after lasting just 24 hours before controversy erupted over its safety.

Estepona council on the Costa del Sol confirmed the fleeting attraction has been removed following a threemonth review. The authority is also stressing that the demolition of the slide will cost them nothing as it was carried out by the original contractor who was never paid in the first place. The strange toboggan was officially opened on May 10th but closed as a “precautionary closure” the next day. Users said they had suffered injuries,

bruises and burns on the ride which was also designed to link two streets, one high above the other, to save people a long walk. The toboggan raised eyebrows because it looked more like a succession of blue guttering down stone steps and across wasteground, ending on a bed of sand in a children’s playground. The ride, nearly 120ft long with a gradient of 32 degrees, was slammed as “bizarre”, with one user saying they were

“thrown everywhere” and eventually catapulted 6ft off the end. The slide was part of a major project in a green area of more than 20,000 square

metres, with trees, public lighting and street furniture. The original contractor has now taken away the slide but it is not known if it will ever be assembled again elsewhere.

America. The Civil Guard has managed to abort this shipment by detaining all its members. In one of the records carried out on detainees’ properties, an indoor marijuana plantation has been found, in full capacity, with

more than a thousand plants. The detainees used advanced technical means to avoid being detected and invested significant amounts of money in technology, to obtain secure communications and detect police investigation means.

OUR COLUMNISTS

During the visit to London in May this year by the Tertulia de Amigos del 25 de Julio, there was an opportunity during the evening of the 14th, at a dinner hosted by the Nelson Society, for Alastair Robertson to deliver a eulogy to Don Antonio Gutierrez, Captain General of the Canary Islands from 1791 until 1799. On the 25th July 1797 Gutierrez was in command of the forces of Tenerife that repelled the attack known to the British as the ‘Battle of Santa Cruz.’ The attack, or invasion, was led by a man who would later become a national hero, Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson. Nelson was about to step from his launch onto the beach with his sword raised, at what is now the Plaza de Espana in Santa Cruz, when he was shot in his right arm and it had to be amputated above the elbow. Tinerfenos are justifiably proud of their famous defeat of the great British navy, every year the event is re-enacted in the city streets.

An eulogy to Don Antonio Gutierrez

W

HEN Nelson left Tenerife he was a broken man, defeated and demoralised, he was an amputee in pain and in a state of severe depression. He wrote to his commanding officer, Admiral Jervis, “I am become a burthen to my friends and useless to my country … When I leave your command I become dead to the world; I go hence and am no more seen.” He had been defeated by over-ambition, by a lack of local knowledge, especially of the sea currents, but in the main by the sheer brilliance of Don Antonio Gutierrez y GonzalezVarona, Captain General of the Canary Islands. In 1797 Gutierrez was 68 years old to Nelson’s 39. His life since the age of 7 had been the Spanish army. He had campaigned in Italy, the Falkland Islands, Algiers and Gibraltar, and had served as

the commander of the island of Menorca. In 1791 he was appointed Captain General of the Canary Islands, and it was here that he experienced his finest hour. During the Napoleonic wars, when Spain and Britain were enemies, the Canary Islands were all but cut off from the high command in mainland Spain; supplies and reinforcements from 800 miles away across Britishcontrolled waters could not be

guaranteed. Gutierrez had to make do with what the archipelago had to offer. What he had at his disposal were the island militias, the shepherds who exchanged their crooks for pikes, the cobblers and bakers who stopped work in order to become soldiers, the ‘Dad’s Army’ of Tenerife. Yes, there was a backbone of veterans, but only a backbone. There were the seventeen forts of Santa Cruz, but to man them all day and all night, in a constant state of tension for an indefinite period, required more than one team of artillerymen per cannon, and there was a shortage. Munitions had been allocated sufficient to maintain a respectable military presence but not to withstand an

invasion. Gutierrez had his back to the wall. This being the case, when the mighty British navy appeared over the horizon, it would not have been unreasonable for Gutierrez to have hoisted the white flag and surrendered, but that was precisely what Gutierrez did not do. Instead, he deployed his limited resources in the best possible way, making the maximum use of them with the result that the Tinerfenos were victorious. After the battle Gutierrez showed himself to be not only an excellent strategist and tactician, but also a shrewd diplomat. Immediately after the signing of the capitulation by Captain Thomas Troubridge, he immediately set in train care for the British wounded and prisoners. He allowed the defeated invaders to retreat in dignity, even providing boats to help them return to their ships. This ensured that any existing enmity would not be allowed to linger. It also got the British off the island as quickly as possible, for if they had stayed longer they might have realised that Gutierrez had little left in reserve, and that if another British attack were to be mounted it would probably be successful. Most of the time Nelson was a good judge of men, he was a professional naval officer who could appreciate the qualities or defects of those around him. Nelson was only

5ft 4ins tall, but he was a ‘big’ man, big enough to acknowledge without bitterness that on that day, the 25th July 1797, the best man had won. The opposing commanders parted on terms of mutual respect with the promise of future friendship that was not to be. Gutierrez wrote to Nelson: “It would be most satisfactory to me if I could address you personally, when circumstances permit, on a subject upon which you, sir, display such high and worthy gifts. In the meantime,” Gutierrez wrote, “I pray that God may preserve your life for many happy years.”

Gutierrez continued to serve as Captain General of Tenerife until his death on the 14th May 1799, and just as Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson was buried in St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, so Captain General Don Antonio Gutierrez was buried in La Iglesia de la Concepcion, the main church of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. On the night of 14th May 2019 at the Naval Club in London, 222 years after the Battle of Santa Cruz and 220 years to the very day after the death of Don Antonio Gutierrez, glasses were raised by the Spanish Tertulia de Amigos and the English Nelson Society in memor y and admiration of both men.

The importance of keeping information up to date

I

N this issue we are going to remind our readers of why it is important to keep their address and other things up to date, bearing in mind recent fatal and near fatal accidents that have occurred in the south of the island. In years past your full name and address would appear on your vehicles “permiso de ciculacion” as did it on the old-style paper driving licences. However, times and technology have moved on, and with the introduction of Data protection, Tráfico no longer print your address on the “permiso de circulacion” nor indeed on the Spanish Driving licence. Most will be aware that here you are normally identifiable by your NIE or DNI number from which the authorities can find your address when necessary. So far so good ….... However, many people rent property here and move fairly frequently for whatever reason but most do not give a moment’s thought to advising Tráfico, Hacienda and the Seguridad Social of the change of address, sometimes this can become very costly. Why, one may ask? Well for example if you get a speeding ticket or another fine or infraction which is delivered by post, if your address is wrong, of course you will not receive it. The official line is that a minimum of two letters are sent (sometimes

more) and then the “debt” is passed to Hacienda. They too then issue several letters and if there is no response the details are then published in the Oficial Boletin which is published daily. The first you may know of such a fine is when there is an embargo on your bank account or money has been taken about which you know nothing, in some cases clearing your account completely (although it does not stop you putting money in you cannot draw the amount embargoed out). If your address at Tráfico was up to date you would have received the first or second letter and could have dealt with it accordingly. This also applies to fines, non-payment of Social security, etc There are also other reasons why your address should be up to date. In the event of a fatal accident the police may need to contact the next of kin or responsible person. To this end we always recommend that in your phone you have Aa contacts. These are people to whom you can contact in the case of an emergency, however not only does it mean that you, if you are able to, can contact them but in emergency situations the Aa contacts are accessible by the emergency services from your phone even if it is locked. What you should do is to enter in your contacts like this Aa Andy Smith 629123123 for example. The police can then

call this person if you are unconscious etc. it is also important that you are aware of all medication you take and any allergies and most phones Apple and Android have an app which enable you to record your medical information, emergency contacts, allergies, doctors who you are seeing etc. This can prove lifesaving if for example you are taking blood thinners and are involved in an accident. Not only does this apply when you are driving but also be aware that as a pedestrian you should always have identification with you in case of an accident, illness etc…

Pets World

How you can spot and help a grieving cat

C

ATS may show signs that could be interpreted as grief, including loss of appetite, crying or searching.

Keeping your surviving cat’s routine the same will help them to cope following the death of someone or another pet in the home. If you want to get another cat to live with your surviving cat, think carefully about whether this is the right thing to do. Even if your surviving cat had a close relationship with cat that has died, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they will benefit from living with another cat. Cats are not social in the same way as people or dogs and can find living with unrelated individuals stressful. When a person or animal in the home passes away, a surviving cat may show signs that could be interpreted as grief. Cats may experience loss of appetite, change in sleep patterns, crying or searching, a need for extra attention and/or a generally sad demeanour. But you should also note you

may not witness any of these changes in your cat. Some cats may appear unaffected by the loss of a pet or person in the home. Cats have an interesting social system and this will affect the way they feel about losing a cat they live with, so it is difficult to generalise about how your own cat may react. Some cats (usually those who are related) have very close bonds with each other, whereas some will just ‘tolerate’ living with each other. If you lose a confident cat and the shy one is left behind, you may even see a slight change of personality in the surviving cat. If you have more than one surviving cat in the home, you may notice a change in relationship between these cats following the death of another. Give your cats time to adapt to life after the death of a fellow feline.

Do cats grieve?

Many anecdotes suggest that animals do feel what humans call ‘grief ’, including an understanding that the deceased is not coming back, but there is little scientific evidence to back this up in the feline species. What we do know is that many species are affected by loss and experience feelings of sadness and loneliness. When a person or pet with whom a cat has spent a lot of time passes away, their regular routine is likely to change. Cats can become upset or stressed by this disruption and you may notice a change in their behaviour, including the signs listed above. Cats may also react if they become aware that you are grieving. Humans’ behaviour changes when they are visibly upset and your pet may pick up on this or experience confusion. Cats may show no signs at all when another cat in the home passes away. If there was

no particular bond between the deceased cat and the surviving cat, you may find your cat appears unaffected by the loss.

How can I help my grieving cat? Doing your best to keep your cat’s routine the same will help them in the days and weeks

following a loss. Try to keep their meal times the same as before. Make sure they are eating, drinking and toileting properly. If your cat goes off their food for two or more days, call your vet urgently due to the risk of liver damage. Pheromones may help to calm cats that are stressed. Ask your vet about these.

Take the time to focus on the bond between you. Think about the things your cat likes and give them more of that; this could be lots of fuss if your cat enjoys fuss, and for others it might be play or to enjoy the outdoors. Human or animal, loss affects us all, but we cope best when we care for each other.

Donde Mario

La Bodeguita de Enfrente

Cuesta de la Villa

Cuesta de la Villa

Cuesta de la Villa

A great part of the fun of wining and dining in Tenerife is finding somewhere different and it’s well worth a trip out to Santa Ursula to the warm and inviting Donde Mario. Though from the outside you might easily pass by it, the inside is elegant and captivating. Restaurateur Mario Torres surprises us every day with his extensive use of produce in season, and his unbeatable experience with wines and cookery. Just try his Cherne warm salad, a super-healthy Canarian fish soup, or his Lomo de Vaca Morucha. You will be captivated.

Set in a series of old Canary houses, this restaurant is made up of a labyrinth of inter-connecting rooms leading off from the bar area in the centre. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an English country pub with its low ceilings with wooden beams and warm décor. The food is fundamentally Canarian. They grow most of their own produce at their allotment and only use olive oil to cook with. Their ethos is a simple one, only use the best, fresh produce and cook it with thought and care. The menu is described as Picoteo, slightly more than tapas without reaching the full-blown three-course meal status. It is delicious and affordable. “La Bodeguita de Enfrente” won the “II Gastronomic Awards Cruzcampo Gran Reserva El Día-Mesa Abierta”, which took place last year.

Why not try a touch of “picoteo”, the Spanish-style of eating where, as the name suggests, you pick a selection of dishes and share with your companions. You will find “El Calderito de la Abuela” in Santa Úrsula and it offers a unique and homely atmosphere combining Canary cuisine with modern creativity. In 2016, “El Calderito de la Abuela” won the “Best Canarian Kitchen Restaurant Award” in the first edition of the “El Dia-Mesa Abierta” Awards on July 28th. The exterior of this property belies what you will find inside as it is full of charm and carácter and there is an incredible view of La Orotava valley. “A gem” is how it is described.

LA TEMPLANZA

Tenerife hits new heights as a film location, with Amazon now starring too

T

ENERIFE has been the venue for yet another film, this time for Amazon.

Tourism councillor for the Cabildo, José Gregorio Martín has assessed “very positively” the shooting of the original Amazon series La Templanza in Tenerife which recently came to an end. Filming began on August 6th and is produced by Atresmedia Studios in collaboration with Boomerang TV, and with the local production and location management of Verónica Franco and Roberta Martino. This is the first Amazon production shot in Europe and will premiere on Amazon Prime Video in 2020 in more than 200 countries and territories. Martín Plata, who has had the opportunity to attend the filming together with the delegate adviser of Tourism of Tenerife, Vicente Dorta, has recognised the work done by the staff of Tenerife Film Commission, who “have provided the production with the necessary advice in obtaining of permits and the search for locations ”, among which were La Laguna, as well as La Orotava and Icod de Los Vinos. Leonor Watling and Rafael Novoa embody the main characters of La Templanza, Soledad Montalvo and Mauro Larrea, while the rest of the cast, which has actors of

different nationalities, is composed of Emilio Gutierrez Caba, Juana Acosta, Esmeralda Pimentel, Nathaniel Parker , Alejandro de la Madrid and Raúl Briones. Sonia Martínez, Nacho Manubens and Tedy Villalba are the executive producers. The series is directed by Guillem Morales, nominated for the Goya and the BAFTA (The uncertain inhabitant, Julia’s eyes, Inside No.9); Goya winner Alberto Ruiz Rojo (Ten Minutes, Apaches, Alleged culprit); and the winner of Goya Patricia Font (Takeaway Coffee, Red Bracelets, Cites, People coming and bah). Susana López Rubio leads the scriptwriting team. Tenerife Film Commission is the tourism brand of Tenerife that offers national and international producers the necessar y advice on locations, permits and all the services they may require during filming on the island. The great diversity of usable spaces as natural scenery (landscapes volcanic, subtropical, urban, coastal and marine, separated by very short distances) favours the recreation of multiple corners of the world in just a few kilometers. The techno-

logy and fabric of local audiovisual companies, tax incentives and advantages for producers and an enviable climate that allows outdoor recordings throughout the year, complement the attractions of Tenerife as an ideal space for filming. The 150 national and international works that the island received in 2018 left revenues of 28.8 million euros. These are the highest figures since these statistics began to be recorded systematically through the Tenerife Film Commission (TFC), to which we must add the more than 2,600 local professionals hired last year, including technicians and extras.

TEA invites entries for reading and writing projects

FESTIVAL INDICE

EA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes will host on September 27th and 28th the fourth edition of the Festival Índice.

This year, one of the new features is the creation of a contest aimed at generating ideas for the promotion of reading (all details on www.festivalindice.es). With this event, the Cabildo de Tenerife, as organisers, intend to promote innovative projects or ideas to encourage the reading habits of specific groups within the educational field. Any person resident in Tenerife can apply for the contest, whose deadline for submitting proposals will end on September 10h. A jury, composed of specialists in education, youth and animation for reading, will

judge the work, influencing, among other aspects, the potential of the proposed idea, the interest it may generate in the group to which it is addressed, the originality, its innovative character, as well as its ability to execute. Of all the works presented, a preselection of five will be carried out, to whom prior training will be offered to guide the projects and prepare their presentation. Also, coinciding with the celebration of the Festival, the five finalists will present their proposal on September 28th at TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, where the winner will be chosen. They will have a budget of 5,000 euros to

execute the project in a term of eight months. This year, the meeting between publishers and novel writers of Tenerife will be held again. This advocates creating

a space that grants visibility and reinforces the work of young creators, while supporting the publication of literary pieces by new authors. Those interested can participate in the categories of novel, poetry and illustrated story. The deadline for admission of the works will end on September 10th or once 100 projects are received. Among the proposals received, 20 will be chosen to access a specific training session to participate in the meeting with publishers. Those selected can present their work in a maximum of half an hour in the meeting with the editors, which will take place on September 27th. The editors will be able to choose four works, which will be published by the Cabildo de Tenerife and join the Index Collection, which already has eleven titles, the result of the meetings held in the last three editions.

over human beings. Ulysses dared to challenge them and was punished: he cannot return to Ithaca and has to roam the sea. Each scene, full of unique adventures, shows the journey as a metaphor for life, for the struggle against difficulties and how to solve them. The last show of the company of Auditorio de Tenerife TP Danza, Eti-Queta, will be on October 20th. During the function the first laborator y of people is inaugurated, where prototypes with human qualities are manufactured and perfection is sought, but what is being perfect? What is being human? On Sunday, November 3rd, Telón offers the premiere of

the Ludo Circus Show in the Canary Islands. It is about the staging of the spirit of the game through the circus, with techniques such as scales, balances, acrobatics and juggling. When seven characters appear on the stage wanting to play, winners and losers appear, voluntary and involuntary blows, attunement and disenchantment, fun, teamwork and individualism. The Swedish show CloseEnough, designed for over six years, will be released nationwide on November 10. In this humorous and interactive show from Sweden, the importance of the game is remembered. The dancers fall, follow and interpret an ingenious, almost acrobatic dance show that is based on

the art of contact improvisation. Together with a live multimusician on stage it will take the audience on a magical and playful journey. On November 24th, the theatre will host La casa del Panda. This show, never seen before in the Canary Islands, is an imaginar y journey through the oldest and most natural China through dance, visual arts and play. Following in the footsteps of a panda bear, the public discovers Chinese traditions and culture, bamboo forests, fireworks, comets and more. Finally, on Sunday, December 15, the Teatro Leal receives the premiere in the Canary Islands of the circus show for the entire family “ Emportats”.

SUMMER SUCCESS

Concert will bring festival to a close T

It may feel like a constant ache that affects both sides of the head. You may also feel the neck muscles tighten and a feeling of pressure behind the eyes. A tension headache normally is not severe enough to prevent you doing everyday activities. It usually lasts for 30 minutes to several hours but can persist for several days. Most people are likely to have experienced a tension headache at some point. They can develop at any age but are more common in teenagers and adults. Women tend to suffer from them more commonly than men. Some adults experience tension-type headaches more than 15 times a month for at least three months in a row. This is known as having chronic tension-type headaches. There’s usually no need to see a GP if you only get occasional headaches. But see a doctor if you get headaches several times a week or they ’re severe. They’ll ask questions about your headaches, family history, diet and lifestyle to help diagnose the type of headache you have. You should seek immediate medical advice for headaches that: Come on suddenly and are unlike anything you have had before. Are accompanied by a very stiff neck, fever, nausea, vomiting and confusion. Follow an accident, especially if it involved a blow to your head. Are accompanied by weakness, numbness, slurr-

ed speech or confusion. These symptoms suggest there could be a more serious problem, which may require further investigation and emergency treatment. The exact cause of tensiontype headaches is not clear, but certain things have been known to trigger them. These include stress and anxiety, squinting, poor posture, tiredness, dehydration, missing meals, lack of physical activity, bright sunlight, noise and/or certain smells. Tension-type headaches are known as primary headaches, which means they ’re not caused by an underlying condition. Other primary headaches include cluster headaches and migraines. Tension-type headaches are not life threatening and

are usually relieved by painkillers or lifestyle changes. Relaxation techniques can

often help with stressrelated headaches. This may include yoga, massage, exercise and/or applying a

cool flannel to your forehead or a warm flannel to the back of your neck. Painkillers such as pa-

racetamol or ibuprofen can be used to help relieve pain. Aspirin may also sometimes be recommended.

NECK INJURY

What to do about whiplash W

HIPLASH injury is a type of neck injury caused by sudden movement of the head forwards, backwards or sideways.

It occurs when the soft tissues in the neck become stretched and damaged (sprained). Whiplash will often get better within a few weeks or months but for some people it can last longer and severely limit their activities. Common symptoms of whiplash include neck pain and tenderness, neck stiffness and difficulty moving your head, headaches, muscle spasms and pain in

the shoulders and arms. Less common symptoms include pins and needles in your arms and hands, dizziness, tiredness, memory loss, poor concentration and irritability. It can take several hours for the symptoms to develop after you injure your neck. The symptoms are often worse the day after the injury and may continue to get worse for several days. Visit your GP if you’ve recently been involved in a road accident or you’ve had a sudden impact to your head and you have pain and stiffness in your neck. They’ll ask how the injury happened and about your symptoms. They may also examine your neck for muscle spasms and tenderness and may assess the range of movement in your neck. Scans and tests such as X-rays will usually only be carried out if a broken bone or other problem is suspected. Treatments for whiplash include keeping your neck mobile and continuing with your normal activities (using a neck brace or collar isn’t recommended), painkillers such as paracetamol or

ibuprofen )stronger painkillers are available on prescription if these don’t help), physiotherapy, exercises and stretches. If your pain lasts a long time, you may be referred for specialist treatment and support at a pain clinic. Painkilling injections and surgery aren’t normally used for whiplash.

ARTEDENTAL SPOTLIGHTS ON GROWING TREND

Why you should choose Tenerife as a dental holiday destination

A

S published in late 2018 by the German statistics portal Statista, for dental services, “in the UK, due to the large waiting lists and rising costs, more individuals are willing to pay for private care.” The same year, the Telegraph newspaper confirmed a situation that certain European countries have taken advantage of: “If you urgently need dental treatment like an extraction or a filling, then the NHS of course provides it. However, more expensive dental treatment such as dental implants, crowns, root canal surgery or veneers can be cheaper abroad than done via the NHS, up to 50-70% cheaper, according to some estimates. For cosmetic changes like teeth whitening, private dental care can usually be found far cheaper in overseas clinics than in the UK. ” More and more people are making use of the so-called “dental tourism”, the one that refers to people who travel abroad to undergo oral treatment at lower prices. The treatments range from the placement of dental implants, crowns or bridges; to the manufacture of dentures, root canal treatments, fillings, veneers or whitening. In Australia, for example, dental treatment in Southeast Asia that includes flying and staying in a luxury hotel may be the same price as just the treatment alone in the oceanic country. In the United States, Patients Beyond Borders, one of the most popular foreign clinic seekers, says “dental tourism accounts for nearly half of all medical travel. Last year some 800,000 Americans crossed borders (mostly to Mexico and Costa Rica) for dental care, while more than six million patients worldwide travelled to destinations

all over the globe to fix their teeth. ” Likewise, the specialised publication for the dental sector, Dentist Money Digest, publishes that “dental tourism is a booming business”, and although it recommends certain precautions such as investigating the clinic and checking the state of health before travelling, it ensures that there are clinics and search engines to fully trust when choosing a centre abroad. Itcites as an example Dayo Dental to look for clinics in Mexico among Americans. “The doctors they select are highly trained, teach in universities, take multiple CE course in the States; some have even been trained at universities within the United States. They also give a guarantee for their restorative treatments provided that the patients return for yearly follow up visits, ” they explain. Patients Beyond Borders states bluntly: “The travelling dental patient need not sacrifice quality to save money.” Dental tourism has also become in recent years a consolidated option among the British. And more so in a growing sector. “In 2018, consumer spending on dental services was at approximately 3.7 billion British pounds, an increase on the previous years and the highest figure in the provided time interval. Since 2005, the household spending on dental services has almost tripled. However, many individuals in the UK are deterred from visiting the dentist due to the cost of treatment, ”adds the Statista portal.

Tenerife advantages According to Dentaly.org, the largest online provider of independent information about dental care and oral problems, Spain is one of the best destinations to have a dental implant, one of the most sought after treatments by foreigners due to the large difference in prices. And it makes a comparison between several countries, including Spain and the United Kingdom. Thus, the average price of a unit implant in the UK is 2,000 pounds, and that of a porcelain veneer is 600 pounds. In Spain, where the average flight price is around 55 pounds, the price of a unit

implant is 750 pounds; and that of the veneer, of 200. Spain is the fifth economy of the European Union, and its health system is one of the best on the continent. Tenerife is also one of the main tourist des-tinations in the United King-dom, with extensive expe-rience in the services sector and impressive air connections with the rest of Europe, especially with the United Kingdom and Germany, taking into account the size of the territory. The Artedental clinic, located in one of the best known tourist enclaves of Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz, and

specialised in the attention to foreigners, knows the factors that make the island an ideal place for dental treatments. “Our facilities and equipment have nothing to envy to the best centers in Europe, constantly updated, research and training. The Island has two international airports and one of the largest commercial and passenger ports in Europe. In addition, Tenerife is well prepared at the level of hotel facilities and has a an impressive tourist leisure offer. That without counting the weather, one of the best in the world, with an average of 23 degrees and the tourist

attraction of nature and beach, perfect for relaxing after a postoperative period. Our clinic also has a polyglot team capable of attending to patients in perfect English or German, ”explains Amaya Sáez, director of the clinic which attends patients in both languages. “That the patient feels the security of being perfectly understood is a fundamental factor for someone who leaves their health in the hands of another person,” he adds. To consult their services in this area, they have a website dedicated exclusively to it: h t t p s : / / w w w. a r t e d e n t a lclinic.com/en/dental-tourism/

Marcos González congratulated them on behalf of the municipal corporation and highlighted the commitment of

the Granadilla de Abona City Council to the sport. He argued the importance of the practice of sport at any stage of life, and also serves as an example in values such as improvement, effort and motivation among the rest of their teammates and the population of the municipality.

GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL

Excitement as new soccer school opens in La Perdoma

T

HE Mayor of La Orotava, Francisco Linares, and delegate sports councillor, Antonio Lima, received Julio Durán, former professional soccer player, coach and director of the EFT, and Ricardo León, former player of CD Tenerife.

Both presented to the municipal representatives the interesting educational and sports project that will be developed in the municipality from next October 2. The Fundación Tenerife CD Tenerife Training and Technification School (EFT) has chosen the Antonio Hernández de La Perdoma field, in the neighbourhood of the same name, as its headquarters for the entire northern area. The school will be open to boys and girls, between 4 and 15 years old, from all over the northern side. The activity will

take place every Wednesday between the months of October to June, and work groups will be created adapted to each age and level. These groups will not exceed the eleven components so that the attention of the coaches is the most appropriate.

WORLD GAMES

Chicho honoured for another tally of medals

M

AYOR of La Orotava, Francisco Linares received the local police officer José Carlos Báez González, “Chicho”, after his return from the World Police and Firefighters Games that were recently held in Chengdu, China.

He participated in the aquatic tests and won ten medals: five gold, three silver and two bronze. Chicho is an example of sacrifice and perseverance, devoting his whole life and many hours of each day to training. The reception also featured the councillors for security and sports, Narciso Pérez and Antonio Lima, respectively, and the chief officer of the Local Police, Pedro Domingo Hernández. José Carlos Báez has competed seven times in these world games that are held every two years, already having 56 medals: 42 gold, 10 silver and four bronze medals

Mayor Francisco Linares expressed delight that CD Tenerife has chosen La Orotava in this part of the island as an ideal point to launch this pioneering project. Antonio Lima added that the facilities chosen are ideal and of quality, as well as accessible, to host this school of technification. The Antonio Hernández de La Perdoma field has two courts, one of eleven football and another of seven football, both of artificial turf. This field is known in the field of island football, and has already been used by the Tenerife CD Foundation in fixtures included in the + Base project. On the other hand, he appreciated that the activity will be a complement to the work that players do on their own teams, but it is also aimed at children who want to have their first contact with football. The representatives of CD Tenerife thanked and appreciated the predisposition of the council of La Orotava with this initiative and with any activity aimed at supporting base sport. They also indicated

that the inscriptions for this first edition are going well and that they can be formalised by completing the form available on the clubdeportivoetenerife.es website, in addition to the Twitter profile of the foundation itself and the representative club. The deadline for receiving applications is open throughout the month of August. Under the philosophy and methodology of the BAS + BASE ’project and the CD Tenerife base football, training will be carried out once a week (Wednesday) with an hour and a quarter duration. All players will be given an official kit of the Canary CD Tenerife Foundation of the official brand of the club HUMMEL, including a shirt kit, shorts and socks, as well as a sweatshirt, a raincoat and a backpack sporty. The former player of CD Tenerife, Sporting de Gijón and UD Orotava, Ricardo León, will be the coordinator of the School of the CDT Foundation at its headquarters in La Perdoma.

Further improvements at Valle San Lorenzo

LA OROTAVA

Seventh edition of amateur soccer tournament

T

HE amateur Football Trophy Villa de La Orotava takes place on Saturdays, August 31st and September 7th.

W

ORK has started on the installation of the roof of the sports centre of Valle SanLorenzo.

The new building that integrates the sports courts has a reinforced concrete structure and retaining wall on which a roof will be supported, consisting of laminated wooden beams of 38.50 metres. The work is progressing, within the estimated deadlines, and in the coming weeks, the parquet will be installed on the sports courts. The sports hall is located on a plot of 30,647 square metres, with an area of more than 2,700. The complex will be distributed in three buildings: auxiliary, with 479 square metres, changing rooms and lobby, with 223 and the one that includes the outer slopes and canopies with more than 2,018 m2, where the roof will be installed. The material with which the structure will be built has already reached Valle San Lorenzo. Laminated beams of 38.50 metres, which represents an important advance in this project as one of the most

demanded works of this Arona district. In addition to covering the existing sports courts, and improving the attached facilities, the new pavilion includes a sports area with indoor soccer, handball, as well as training for basketball, volleyball and other modalities. The landscaping of the area will include urban furniture, gardens, street lighting, a space for walking and recreation of pets, biosaludables exercise equipment and a sports court. The project has a second phase that will link the TF-28 road with the sports city of Valle San Lorenzo. The Mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena said: “This is undoubtedly one of the most demanded works of Valle San Lorenzo, which will be a reference space, both sports and leisure, since the entire project houses new roads, accesses, parking spaces and garden areas for the enjoyment of all our residents. ”

The Antonio Hernández Municipal Stadium, located in the La Perdoma district, hosts this seventh event and the third Juan David Yanes González memorial. The San Andrés Valle SportsCultural Association, organiser of the summer tournament, presented the line-up in which the protagonists are Aficionado S.D. Palestra, Amateur U.D Candias, Amateur Rincon and Amateur San Andrés Valle. The semifinals will be held on the last Saturday of August, on the 31st. At 6.30pm, the first semifinal will be held between the U.D. amateur team. Las Candias and amateur Rincon. Then, at 8pm, the second semifinal will be played between the S.D. Palestra and the San Andrés Valle. The final will take place on Saturday, September 7th. At 6.30 pm the “consolation final” will be held between the two losing teams of the semifinals phase. Later, at 8.30pm, the grand final will begin with the winning teams, where only one of them will become the winner of this seventh edition. This initiative, supported by La Orotava council and other private entities, seeks to promote the activity between the different amateur football formations of La Orotava and the region. Councillor for sports, Antonio Lima praised this sporting event and its seven year history as to maintain any activity for years involves many efforts and overcoming obstacles. Along these lines, the councillor congratulated the San Andrés Valle sports-cultural association and encourages them to continue with this tournament and the encouragement of a healthy lifestyle.

In addition, he highlighted the commitment of the council with this team that reaps one triumph after another, informing them of the La Hoya del Pozo football field project, in El Médano, where more than 400,000 euros are being invested in general improvements, as well as the next tender of the new lawn,

TROPHY RETURNS together with the Cabildo de Tenerife. Eudita Mendoza highlighted the important role that this sports team performs not only in sports, but tourism, making known the name of the municipality at each point of the national geography where they will compete.

Tax inspectors might pay even more attention to high-end property ownership structures as the political pendulum swings left

Acting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez (front centre) with his cabinet

T

HOUGH the Spanish Socialist party failed to form a government, the political pendulum in Spain is swinging to the left after many years of austerity under the right-of-centre PP party. A Socialistled Government could put even more pressure on the tax authorities to go after every last euro of revenue, including a squeeze on company ownership structures for high-end properties. Spain’s acting Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez (pictured above, with his cabinet) failed to get enough parliamentary support to form a Government. In particular, he failed to do a deal with the hard-left Podemos party led by Pablo Iglesias, who was demanding disproportionate power in the new Government. Their negotiations fell apart spectacularly, and the damage might be irreparable. If so, fresh elections will take place in November. The hard-left Podemos crowd didn’t get their hands on any real power this time round, but they have forced the more centrist Spanish Socialist party to tack to the left to fend them off. And whilst they were still talking, the Socialists offered Podemos some government ministries, including control over the

housing department. So, if they do manage to patch things up, it’s worth keeping in mind that Spanish housing policy could come under the control of the hard left, who also wanted control over customs and revenue. The Spanish hard-left,with their communist roots, take a dim view of wealth, foreign investors, and any attempt to avoid taxes. They want to clamp down on all tax breaks and increase tax rates. Real estate cannot be moved offshore and is an easy target. But even under the centreright Government of Mariano Rajoy, the tax authorities were already aggressively ramping up programmes to increase tax revenues without an increase in the tax rate. Governments of all stripes understand the importance of

revenue, especially when public finances aren’t in great shape. With the Left coming to power promising higher social spending and taxes, public finances will be under even greater pressure, and the message won’t take long to reach the tax inspectors. As I have mentioned before, the Spanish tax authorities are paying close attention to International company structures established in decades gone by to help wealthy owners of property in Spain avoid tax. Owners of high-end homes received bad advice in the past, and in many cases failed to review the position annually. Many of those structures are now a ticking tax time bomb, and the fuse will get even shorter with left-wing Government looking to finance increased social spending. “It is clear that buying property through a company has become less tax-efficient, and can be a nightmare in case of a tax inspection,” explains tax-specialist lawyer Fernando Del Canto. “If clients own a property in Spain worth more than €1m through a company set up before 2018, especially if there is an

offshore company involved, assess the tax exposure and be prepared for the possibility of an inspection. Those who have already attracted the attention of the Spanish tax authorities should take urgent action. A well-prepared response will send a strong message to the tax authorities that the owner is not a soft target, which is half the battle.” Del Canto estimates that more than 5,000 private properties in Spain are owned using international company structures, many of them by people based in the UK. If you own a Spanish property through an international company structure, Spain’s swing to the left is another good reason to review your tax exposure sooner rather than later. Del Canto Chambers, with offices in Madrid and London, are cross-border Spanish and international tax specialists with unique experience in sorting out, or heading off, tax liabilities for high-value properties in Spain. Get in touch with them for a free report on your tax exposure, or to deal with a tax inspection.
