CHINESE TOURISTS TO FOLLOW IN THEIR PRESIDENT’S FOOTSTEPS?

Photo: “Asociación Comunidad China de Tenerife” welcome Xi Jinping

A

N historic visit to Tenerife by the president of China not only attracted worldwide publicity for the island but will also open the doors to more tourists from the Orient. Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan may only have made a lightning stop-over but they still found time to visit Teide National Park and were said

to have been enthralled by the magnificent volcano and its surrounds. The media, both print and television, hailed his visit as a

huge success - making headline news in most cases and his presence created a massive social media impact. “Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Tenerife among spectacular security measures and “Xi Jinping’s visit to Tenerife is the best investment” said the press, local, national

and international, including Chinese newspapers. The Chinese delegation had arrived at Tenerife South airport last Friday, evening in two jumbo jets for a stop-over following the Chinese president’s attendance at the eleventh annual BRICS summit, where he had met

ENERIFE Cabildo has been participating in the Seafuel project to look for fuels from seawater.

The Insular Energy Agency of Tenerife (AIET) and the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER) have been holding a series of activities related to the European SEAFUEL project. These commemorate the Science Weeks that in the Canary Islands are promoted by the Ministry of Economy, Knowledge and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands through the Canary Islands Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI). The SEAFUEL project sustainable integration of renewable fuels in local transport systems - is cofinanced by the European Programme INTERREG Atlantic Area 2014-2020. SEAFUEL aims to demonstrate the feasibility of feeding local

transport networks using fuels produced through renewable sources and seawater, without a net carbon footprint. Specifically, the project will focus on analysing the feasibility of generating hydrogen using excess energy production from renewable sources, using hydrogen technology to store this surplus that can then be used by local transport systems . In addition, until November 23, the agency and the ITER are developing the activity “Guided visits and SEAFUEL workshop to demonstrate hydrogen technology applied to transport”, consisting of a programme of guided visits to the Technological Walk of Renewable Energies It complements with a practical workshop on hydrogen and its application to the transport sector.

T

WELVE people have been arrested and 13 police raids carried out, including in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, as part of an ongoing operation to smash the illegal commercialisation of pay-TV and videos. It’s estimated that the criminal network had more than 20,000 clients across Spain. Four of the 12 detainees were in charge of obtaining the television signal and its subsequent illegal dissemination, publicised the service they provided, captured customers, facilitated and managed their access and made the collections. As a result of this operation, seven web pages and two profiles on social networks where illegal services were announced were closed. In addition, 86 television signal decoders, 15 hard drives, ten computers, 17 mobile phones, a high-end vehicle, two NAS servers and

22,919 euros in cash have been intervened. The investigation began in 2017 with the discovery of a Facebook page with more than 1,700 followers and in which access to pay-TV channels was offered and videos on demand illegally.

with representatives from Russia, India, South Africa and the hosts, Brazil. High-end cars invaded the TF-1 highway, where there were several traffic cuts. The leader stayed at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton Abama in Guía de Isora where he spent the night. Xi Jinping and his wife went to Las Cañadas the following afternoon and enjoyed a 90-minute visit, eventually taking home gifts of Tenerife wine and oil and presenting the Cabildo with a traditional Chinese vase, as well as a letter of peace. Tennerife Cabildo hopes the presence of the leader will be an opportunity to reach a new market and place the island on the map for luxury Chinese tourism. The Chinese tourist has a high-spending power, with China being the second country on the planet, after the United States, with more millionaires, almost three million citizens. The president of the Cabildo stressed the importance of Xi Jinping’s visit due to the

impact he has on the Chinese population and in the media. “A president of a world power has wanted to make an excursion through Teide and this will have a great impact. Our island, and specifically our National Park , will become a point of interest for the Chinese population,” Pedro Martin told Diario de Avisos. “They were very surprised at what they saw. They loved it, they were fascinated. And the population of China is guided a lot by the steps of its president. We hope that this visit will translate into an increase in the interest of Chinese citizens in our island.” “This may be a first step forward to position ourselves in tourism in the Chinese market. We are convinced that ties will improve. China is a very strategic partner in the international tourism market.”

ARONA INVITE

Fun day based on figure painting, board games and tournaments

A

RONA is holding a “Freak Day” on November 30th to turn the spotlight on unusual and rare hobbies which might well lead to their followers being called “geeks”. The local council says this certainly shouldn’t be the case as there are many people who love pastimes such as modelling, playing with soldiers, board games and so on. “Arona Freak Day aims to be a meeting and reference point in the Canary Islands for fans and companies in these sectors in order to give them greater visibility,” said a spokesman. “Our special day will provide visitors with an alternative of entertainment and fun in the municipality.” Events will include a tournament of Blood Bowl which is a board game based on rugby but with a fantasia theme. Already in its third edition, the “Gofio Bowl” is a reference in the Canary Islands. There will also be an exhibition of painted models of military and civil-themed vehicles (planes, fighting cars, etc.), individual figures, scenes (small composition with one or more figures on a base that integrates them and

tells a story), dioramas (composition of several figures and elements on a large base), busts sculptures and figures of different scales. The works presented can cover any subject. From historical (any time or period), to fantasy or science fiction. In turn, the public will be able to find works of all levels: from pieces made by beginners, to works which have received awards on the mainland. There will also be masterclasses on techniques involved in modelling and a theory class, as well as an X-wing tournament, a game based on the Star Wars universe that simulates air fighting between spacecraft and a games’ zone for introductory games and demonstrations of different board games and wargames, guided by monitors. Children will be catered for too as an expert shows them how to approach the world of modelling and have fun painting a figure whilst there will

also be a fantastic themed card game, known throughout the world. The event takes place in Los Cristianos cultural centre on November 30th from 9am

to 7.30pm. Entrance to the venue and participation in the activities will be free except for those activities / tournaments that require prior registration. .

Sergio stirs consciences with stunning photos

P

HOTOGRAPHER Sergio Hanquet has been stirring consciences against plastic with an exhibition in London.

The adviser of the Arona Son Atlántico Festival has been showing his underwater images at the ‘London Eco Film Festival’. The event was created to make the general public more aware of the global environmental instability in which we live. The photographer showed an impressive collection of 25 large-format images. All the images, some dating back more than ten years, were taken in the Canaries although they could have echoed situations anywhere in the world. The festival was held in one of London’s most diverse and dynamic art centres, the Rich Mix, with its two conference areas and three cinemas, in which more than 100 films were screened. In the London Eco Film Festival, the main protagonists were the filmmakers, who interpreted and disseminated, through their films, to society, all the knowledge and experiences of scientists, environmentalists and naturalists who study and protect the world in which we live .

TENERIFE TRAGEDY

Frantic “Difficult times but attempts to save opportunities exist” say man in pool A Arona’s leaders A

man died in Tenerife after being found floating in a swimming pool.

The incident happened in the resort of Golf del Sur . No details were given about the victim but in the British press, he was said to be British. He was found when residents of an apartment block saw him floating unconscious in the pool. They dragged him out and started to try and revive him whilst waiting for the emergency services to arrive. Police and medics rushed to the scene but in the meantime, the man’s rescuers were given instructions over the phone by a doctor at the 112 emergency control centre on how to carry out further resuscitation techniques. “He displayed all the symptoms of drowning,” said a spokesman. Medical staff took over on their arrival and also tried to revive the victim with a semi-automatic defibrillator. Their efforts did not succeed and he was declared dead.

RONA has been reinforcing and promoting its tourism strategy in the United Kingdom.

The Mayor, José Julián Mena and tourism councillor, José Alberto Delgado visited the World Travel Market with an ambitious promotional campaign of the destination, focused on the diversification of the offer, highlighting reference events and betting on the sustainability of the municipality, which is immersed in the Smart Destination process. Their attendance at the London event comes in the wake of tourist uncertainty generated by Brexit and the closure of one of the main agencies of tour operation, based in Arona. Even so, the mayor has explained that “they are difficult times but they also mark opportunities, and we have to know how to take advantage of them, therefore, from #Arona we make a remarkable reinforcement in our tourism strategy to be able to differentiate ourselves as a destination, valuing our product.” The road map of the Tourist

Board focuses on the diversification of the housing, leisure, nature or events offer, microsegmenting in turn by tastes ages or nationalities, with the aim of reaching the desired profile, being the main commitment to sustainability in its three areas, social, economic and environmental. The destination is moving away from the unique promotion of sun and beach, combining the coast with the centre, putting in value, the culture and historical heritage of this large municipality of more than 100,000 inhabitants. “ We have managed to advance in this area, getting better the sustainability values we address with the Biosphere certification, and that serve us as an effective and reasonable methodology to set goals, ”said the Mayor. The municipality is immersed in a Smart Destination process, in conjunction with the state, assuming an investment of more than 6 million for the city council “with which we reinforce

competitiveness and adapt to the new times. In addition, we maintain good relations with Tenerife Tourism and the Canary Islands Government, which together with the Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands allow us to move towards better results. ” The Mayor has also stressed the importance of the Municipal Tourism and Commerce Council that “will be a fundamental tool for Arona, with which representatives from all sectors that are transverse to the tourism

Puerto hotels lead the way in waste management

PROJECT’S SUCCESS

M

ORE than 40 hotel and nonhotel establishments in Puerto de la Cruz have significantly improved the separation and management of their waste (plastic, paper, glass) over the last year with a door-to-door collection system.

These results are directly related to the project proposed more than a year ago by Ashotel, researchers from the Ashotel-CajaCanarias Tourism Chair of the University of La Laguna and the local council to apply an intelligent rate of payment for waste generation that rewards the efforts in the minimisation and separation of these by hotel entrepreneurs. Of the total hotels currently participating in door-to-door collection, eight have gone one step further and since March 2019 they are also separating organic waste. These are the Marte, El Tope, Eden Vacation

Park, We are La Paz, Príncipe San Felipe Bay, Taoro Garden, Atlantic Mirage and Tigaiga establishments. Ashotel is urging the competent authorities to start up organic waste treatment plants so the compost can be returned to farms and parks and gardens to clearly boost a circular economy on the island and take advantage of this measure as a sustainable

destination. Enrique Talg, vice president of Ashotel, said: “The hoteliers of Puerto have taken the initiative in this type of environmental and sustainable initiatives, as they already did when they were pioneers in the creation of the Q of Quality in 1995 or the implementation of European certificates of EMAS ecoaudit.”

industry and administrations, we can periodically and constructively hold meetings that help to solve common problems, setting objectives that are in the general interest.” In this way, Arona also consolidates its events, turning the ARN Culture and Business Pride, the International Carnival of Los Cristianos, the Folk Fest and Arona into Traditions.

ENVIRONMENTAL MESSAGE

Adeje pleads: “Drink our tap water!”

A

DEJE council is promoting the consumption of tap water and the reduction of the use of bottled water.

Health councillor, Amada Trujillo Bencomo says that consuming tap water from homes in Adeje is the most sustainable environmental option. It favours economic savings because it is cheaper and avoids the use of more plastic. The council has a municipal laboratory that performs periodic weekly checks to certify the quality of the water consumed in households. In the years 2017, 2018 and so far in 2019, the qualification of water suitable for consumption was obtained in one hundred per cent of all the analysed samples of the different supply networks of the municipality, both hotel and in the municipal network. After Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Adeje is the second municipality of the Canary Islands with the highest number of annual analytical bulletins. The council has made numerous improvements in supply over recent years and in investments in facilities and infrastructure, such as treatment of drinking water by desalination of sea water, in the treatment plants of La Caleta and Adeje-Arona, in tanks, in supply networks and pumping systems and in water treatment of dams and galleries. Tests show that Adeje tap water is of very good quality, does not present health risks and is recommended for people to drink.

Major facelift begins for Puerto’s Playa Jardin

T

ENERIFE Cabildo has started work on the project of accessibility and improvement in Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz.

Councillor for planning, José Gregorio Martín Plata says it will last for seven months and will mean that the tourist city will have these new infrastructures “before next summer”. It is planned to remove physical barriers, incorporate accessible ramps and provide new furniture, showers, accessible bathrooms, panels and lighting, among others. The work, which is being carried out by the company Copisa Constructora Pirenaica SA, has an allocation cost of 512,761.34 euros, and is within the framework of the Tenerife y el Mar programme. This includes a total of 176 actions on the coast with a global investment of 65 million euros in ten years, financed by the Cabildo de Tenerife and the Ministry of Tourism, and whose objective is to value the Tenerife coast and increase its attractiveness.

A 112 spokesman said: “At the time indicated above, the Emergency and Security Coordinating Centre (CECOES) 1-1-2 of the Canary Islands Government received an alert informing of the fall of a paraglider in an area of difficult access. 1-1-2 immediately activated the necessar y emergency resources.”

TRIPLE AWARD

COSTA ADEJE HAILS UNITED APPROACH TO BREXIT AND THOMAS COOK ISSUES

T

HE World Travel Market 2019 held in London proved to be one of the most fruitful in recent years for Costa Adeje.

The event featured an intense agenda that included meetings and collaborations with the national and regional governments and the Cabildo de Tenerife, aimed at strengthening the work to alleviate the Thomas Cook crisis and tackle the situation that Brexit is generating. In this sense, the agreements announced with Jet2 and other agents of the sector have been described as significant by the Mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, for whom the effort made from all administrations, and the union of action demonstrated in the last weeks, has been an example of how to act in crisis situations. “Expectations have been exceeded in terms of the shadows with which we arrived in London and we have shown that the Canary Islands is a solid, resilient destination, capable of overcoming crises,” he said. “From now on, we must continue working all together as we have done before this very complicated situation. ” Adeje also followed its own agenda that included, among

other aspects, meetings and contacts with the heads of the main hotel chains present in the municipality. In addition, both the Mayor and councillor, Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, had the opportunity to assess the situation of other tour operators working in the Canary Islands and probe their current strength. “We must send a message of tranquility because the operators that continue to operate in the Canary Islands are in a solid situation and a repeat of a crisis like that of Thomas Cook doesn’t look likely in the near future, “ said the Mayor. Sr. Fraga said the Costa Adeje’s commitment to quality was absolute, as is the commitment to the environment. “Tourism must generate well-being for our people, quality work and that the citizens perceive that it is good because it generates wealth and opportunities for the whole society, ” he added. Another piece of good news in London came through the delivery of the awards for hotel tourism excellence granted by the specialised guide Count

Nast Johansens for almost 40 years. Of the five awardwinning hotels in Spain, three

of them are in Costa Adeje. This is the Hotel Bahía del Duque, awarded for having the Best

Gun scare in El Fraile A T

HERE was consternation in the Arona town of El Fraile when a man was seen walking down the street brandishing a gun and threatening passers-by.

The police and Civil Guard were called out just after noon after a woman raised the alert. Officers eventually found the man in calle Lanzarote. He ran away when he spotted the police and threw the gun, which turned out to be an imitation, under a parked car. He was arrested and taken to the police station in Playa de las Américas. The suspect is of Maghreb origin and aged about 30.

man arrested for two robberies with violence in Tenerife was also wanted in Ibiza for similar offences.

The detainee selected his victims, elderly women, and, through the “tug” method, seized their belongings. The incidents happened in Puerto de la Cruz where the 23year-old man is also said to have committed three crimes of theft. “At the time of his arrest, the young man was investigated in Ibiza by the National Police for events of similar characteristics committed there,” said a police spokesman. National police had started an investigation in Puerto after receiving several complaints about crimes in the town which all fitted the same description.

ORE than 100 people took part in a big cleanup in La Caleta.

Organised by the Canary Green association, the main objective of this action, in addition to cleaning, was to deepen the importance of coastal care and civic commitment. The initiative was sponsored by Hotel Suite Villa María, Tenerife Top Training and Golf Costa Adeje, with the institutional support of the town hall of Adeje through the parks and gardens and ecological transition departments which provided all the tools and equipment. The cleaning began at 11am and more than 100 volunteers spent an hour and a half collecting the waste that was located in the coastal area of La Caleta. Department heads Maikel Álvarez and Daniel Melo thanked the involvement of the business sector in the area. “We hope that this example will be extended and above all that more awareness about the care of our environment is created,” they said.

AVENIDA CHAYOFITA

“Ecological Clogged-up Los Cristianos could be solved by underground port road islands” created across Arona to T encourage recycling RAFFIC congestion in Los Cristianos caused by traffic heading to and from the busy port could be solved by burying avenida Chayofita underground, the local council is suggesting. Officials have been discussing the major problem which has been getting worse over the years and frequently sees that area of the town at a complete standstill. The Mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena recently met with the new president of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Carlos González to raise mobility problems in the town derived from the transit of vehicles to and from the dock. He put forward solutions devised by the council, such as Chayofita Avenue going underground, so that the traffic goes directly to the highway, and the construction of a transport interchange, proposals that have already been transferred to the Cabildo de Tenerife. Sr. Mena was accompanied by the councillors for contracting, modernisation, works, transparency and citizen participation, Leopoldo Díaz Oda; transport and mobility, Francisco Marichal,

and public services, José Luis Gómez. The Mayor stressed the port in Los Cristianos is one of the most important in Spain in passenger traffic but the traffic is having a major impact on the town. The council feels an underground Chayofita Avenue would produce positive results without impacting on people’s mobility. On the other hand, a transport interchange would be built on the avenue itself, generating a large boulevard and giving different traffic options to the population. José Julián Mena explained that “we are aware that mobility problems in Los Cristianos require an integral action, which goes through both a transport interchange and the underground of Chayofita Avenue, avoiding temporary patches that do not give a solution to the port situation, at least until the future port of Fonsalía is built.”

RONA has created a series of “ecological islands” as part of its ongoing commitment to the environment.

FRIENDS’ GALA

T

HE 10th Solidarity Gala, organised by the Forum of Friends of the South of Tenerife, in collaboration with Arona council, raised 15,000 euros.

The money will go to the cancer charities, the Carrera por la Vida Foundation and the ÁMATE Association. The event was held on October 19th, coinciding with the World Day for the Fight Against Breast Cancer. The money was presented at an event held in the Plenary Hall of Arona, through a symbolic cheque divided equally between the two entities. The Mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena and councillor for social services, Elena Cabello, the president of FAST, José Fernando Cabrera, and the regional president of AECC, Inés Grillo, helped present this donation which represents important support for both associations.

Over the last few months, the local council has set up recycling containers in 213 locations across the municipality. The different colour bins allow for the deposit of rubbish, glass, paper, cardboard etc. The authority believes many people were put off from using the containers because they were in different sites and not grouped together as at present. The process, which will be extended, has developed in recent months in areas of Las Galletas, Costa del Silencio, Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas, Las Rosas, La Estrella, Guargacho, Cabo Blanco, Buzanada, Valle San Lorenzo, Chayofa, Arona centre, Vento, Las Casas and Guaza, among others. “In collaboration with the residents of the different

nuclei, and helped by the process of digitalisation and intelligent management of the municipal waste management service, these container areas have been planned and implemented, being located in spaces avoiding noise, bad odours and other discomforts,” said a council spokesman. Up until the October, the collection of light packaging has increased by 18 per cent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 722 tons. Both the Mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena and environment councillor, José Luis Gómez stressed the importance “of a comprehensive strategy in terms of sustainability” to help residents. SERIOUS PROBLEM

Santa Cruz to tackle resurfacing of roads and pavements after “years of neglect”

S

ANTA Cruz is to tackle one of its biggest ever municipal projects after admitting that most of the capital’s road surfaces have not been treated “for years”. Numerous streets will either be patched up or completely resurfaced, depending on their condition in each case. It is thought the entire plan will cost four million euros and it will be done in stages, with the first costing 874,000 euros. Councillor for public services José Ángel Martín highlighted the state of abandonment of some of the streets and the need for urgent intervention. The project will be co-ordinated by the department of community welfare and public services.

The city council’s governing board has approved the adjudication of the contracting of works for resurfacing, as well as the bidding of project drafting for the rehabilitation of pavements in streets throughout the capital. Sr. Martín said these actions represent a first step and respond to an urgent demand: “In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a global resurfacing was not carried out for many years and it was very much needed. In those cases where resurfacing is required, a major work effort must be

made but the state of abandonment of some streets in the capital is a major demand and it is a necessity to condition them for residents as soon as possible. ” The most immediately executed work affects Fernando Arozena Quintero and Anatolio Fuentes García streets, between the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and the roundabout on the TF-29, which accesses the TF-1. The city council expects that the works for the resurfacing of this area, awarded for 604,000 euros, will be carried out within four months. The rest of the economic amount, about 270,000 euros, goes to technical assistance in the drafting of projects and

Back Accion del Sol’s Xmas campaign with a doggie shoebox

W

E have again been very busy with our Educational Programme with children coming from the many surrounding schools and colleges to help the children understand the basic care and welfare needs in the attempt to improve the crisis here on the island.

With our’s and other refuges full off unwanted dogs we need to educate the children so they understand the importance of adopting not buying a dog and having the dogs castrated or sterilised to prevent more puppies. With Christmas only around the corner we have again started a campaign after the success of last year to ask our friends and supporters of Accion Del Sol to donate a shoe box of goodies for the dogs such as tinned dog food for our older dogs and puppies, puppy milk, dog toys , dog collars and leads. Marion and her team do such an amazing job at the refuge so I thought it would be great to bring some Christmas cheer to the 200 plus dogs at the refuge. You can deliver your box personally to the refuge by the 20th of December during the below opening hours or call 687905511 to arrange for your donations to be collected. Please do write your name on the box so that we know who kindly donated to the dogs. We would like to thank you in advance for your help and support. We have 200 gorgeous dogs that are desperately seeking loving new homes so please adopt not buy a dog. The situation here in Tenerife is extremely bad for the dogs. We desperately need to find adoptions for the dogs in our care. We do not charge for adoptions but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every dog is fully vaccinated, microchipped, fully inoculated, heartworm and flea free and passported as well as castrated or sterilised so you can ensure your new dog has the best start to its new life. Please do call the refuge on 664321219 between the hours of 8am -17.00 if you can help in any way. We are always in need of tinned dog food for our older dogs, puppy milk, blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. If you have any of the above to spare they would be very much appreciated at the refuge or visit Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons from 14.0017.00pm and Saturdays 13.00- 16.00. The dogs especially enjoy a gentle walk down to the beach for a cooling paddle in the sea. So please do come and walk the dogs if you have some time to spare. We are situated directly under the Eolica Parque exit 52 on the TF1 north bound which is after the after the El Medano junction . Head for the giant windmills on the coast and we are the buildings on the right hand side or email the refuge at teneriffa@aktiontier.org or visit our Facebook page

JET2 TO OPEN NEW BASE IN SOUTH TENERIFE AND INCREASE AIR SEATS

G “

REAT news for the Canaries” is the reaction of tourism chiefs to Jet2’s announcement that it is to increase its seats to the archipelago and open a new base in Tenerife. The president of the Canary Islands Government, Ángel Víctor Torres and the Minister of Tourism, Industr y and Commerce, Yaiza Castilla held a meeting with those responsible for the airline within the framework of the World Travel Market in London in which they announced the increase of 200,000 air places in winter and 130,000 in summer. The British airline will open a base this winter in Tenerife south, it was also confirmed. Sr. Torres and Yaiza Castilla had met with the top managers of Jet2: the general director of Business Development Ian

Doubtire and the general director of Airports and Tourism Organisations, Janice Matter. The head of tourism said that “after having transferred the need to increase connectivity with the Canary Islands, the airline has announced its intention to increase its air places by 35 per cent for this winter season, which means 200,000 more seats. In total they will have 773,000 air seats for the Canary Islands in winter as well as opening a base in Tenerife South. ” Yaiza Castilla called it “great news for the Canary

Islands” and added: “We will continue to deepen negotiations with this and other companies.” Jet2 complements this increase with 14 per cent more air seats for the summer season, 130,000 more seats, which will mean having 1.1 million Jet2 air seats in the Canary Islands from April to October 2020. In total, Jet2 will make 1.8 million seats available to the Canary Islands in the coming winter and summer seasons. The British airline Jet2, based in the north of England (Leeds), although operating from nine British airports, is the leading British operator in the islands and in 2018 transported 1.3 million passengers to the Canary Islands.

More investment for La Gomera as Canaries back “Islas Verdes”

T

HE Canary Government has pledged its commitment to the so-called “Islas Verdes” so that more tourists can be attracted to the lesser populated islands of the archipelago.

One of these is La Gomera where the Ministry of Tourism is allocating nearly 400,000 euros to improve pedestrian access to the marine avenue in Playa Santiago in the municipality of Alajeró. “By improving the space of one of the most important tourist centres of the island of La Gomera, we strengthen the quality of the destination and, with it, the opportunity to be an even more powerful claim for those who wish to visit the island or stay in that area,” said Minister Yaiza Castilla . She added: “One of the central axes of the work that we are developing in the Ministry focuses on promoting the tourism sector of the less populated islands of the archipelago, called Islas Verdes (Green Islands) to guarantee new economic and employment opportunities and thus allow these islands to develop all their capacities as a destination, taking into account the singularities they offer.” She stressed that these improvement works “will not only enhance tourism infrastructure but also benefit people residing near these spaces.” The project, which includes an execution period of eight months, contemplates the conditioning of the pedestrian roads that lead to the maritime avenue of Playa Santiago. Specifically, the works will include pavement improvements, such as the installation of stainless steel railings and handrails, the installation of low voltage networks, telecommunications and public lighting and also solve unevenness in access points to homes.

Spate of avovado thefts solved in La Palma

T

HE Civil Guard arrested a man and investigated five other people aged between 29 and 39 for several robbery offences with force on farms in the western region of La Palma where they tried to steal more than 700 kilos of avocado. At a farm located in Los Llanos de Aridane, two of the suspects were surprised by the owner when they were trying to bundle up 380 kilos but they ran off. A few days later, three other men accessed a farm in the area of El Manchón and stole 200 kilos of avocados, which were collected and stored in their boxes, ready for transfer. In this case, the alleged perpetrators of the crime sold the fruit in an authorised market but provided documents from another farm. Police were able to recover all of the avocados as well as making the five arrests. The sixth defendant broke into a farm in Puerto Naos and stole 205 kilograms of avocados. Again, the fruit was later offered for sale in an authorised shop in the Aridane Valley using documents relating to another site. The Civil Guard says the crimes were solved thanks to the collaboration of the growers and the fruit and vegetable stores which were inspected.

UNITED FRONT

“TAXING CONNECTIVITY MEANS LOSING COMPETITIVENESS” say worried tourism leaders

B

USINESS leaders of the tourism industry in the Canary Islands are joining forces to fight plans for an airline kerosene tax, as proposed by Germany, for fears of harming the archipelago’s connectivity. Whilst attending the World Travel Market in London, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands, Yaiza Castilla held a meeting with the four main tourist employers of the Canaries in which they agreed a unified strategy. The Minister met with the heads of the Insular Association of Businessmen of Hotels and Apartments of Lanzarote (Asolan), of the association of entrepreneurs of Fuerteventura Asofuer, of the Hotel Association of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro (Ashotel) and the Federation of Hospitality and Tourism Entrepreneurs of Las Palmas (FEHT), Susana Pérez Represa, Antonio Hormiga, Jorge Marichal and José María

Mañaricúa, respectively. They expressed their concern about the loss of competitiveness that may entail for the islands if airlines were subject to a kerosene tax, taking into account the Canarian dependence on air transport for the arrival of tourists. The Minister of Tourism defended that “we cannot avoid the fact of what climate change entails and its consequences, so that both the public and private sectors must establish measures that effectively compensate for the damages we cause on the territory and the environment”. However, she added, we cannot fail to take into account that “our autonomous community is an island territory, fragmented and more than four hours from our main

tourist issuing countries.” Therefore, both employers and the Ministry of Tourism agree that a kerosene tax that severely affects the volume of CO2 emissions from airplanes would be a clear decrease in Canarian competitiveness compared to other competing destinations if, as expected, the tax depends on the kilometres travelled, among other concepts. In principle, the strategy agreed by Yaiza Castilla with the four tourism employers is based on two lines of action. On the one hand, to promote from the Government of the Canary Islands an intercession by the Spanish Executive before the European Union for the defence of the exemption or reduction of the tax on air traffic with the archipelago. And, on the other, the Ministry of Tourism, FEHT, Ashotel, Asolan and Asofuer agreed to design a package of transversal measures against climate change to be developed in the field of companies and in the Canary

Islands’ public administration. “Guaranteeing connectivity and the fight against climate change should not be exclusive policies and more so in the case of the Canar y Islands, where the fight against climate change must adapt to the singularities of the

WO men have been arrested for violent robberies in Lanzarote after they broke into the same home twice and tied up the owner before assaulting him.

One of the pair arrested is Spanish and the other of foreign nationality, both 19 years of age. They face prosecution for robbery with violence, two crimes of illegal detention and two crimes of injury. The men are said to have twicee accessed the house of the victim in the town of Tahiche and after assaulting him, tied his hands with a rope before stealing a mobile and cash on the first occasion and then his keys on the second. A Gomera is pressing for urgent action to maintain the connectivity of one of its most popular destinations on the far side of the island, Valle Gran Rey. The Cabildo wants the Canary government to declare the route a public service obligation so that people can travel to the coastal town from Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro. The move comes in the wake of one of the shipping companies ceasing its passenger and vehicle traffic operations between the port of Valle Gran Rey , San Sebastián de La Gomera and Los Cristianos. According to Cabildo present, Casimiro Curbelo, the motion urges the Ministry of Public Works, Transportation and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands to study the modification of the decree that regulates the special regime of provision of maritime transport on the islands to include this service. “We understand that this

can be a viable solution to guarantee the coverage that was being provided with Valle Gran Rey and that last year transported more than 170,000 passengers and 30,000 vehicles,” he said. The island president reaffirmed the commitment of the Insular Institution to the connectivity of the southern municipality so that it did not become isolated and also helped to increase the mobility offer for both residents and tourists. Connections with Valle Gran Rey were reactivated two years ago, first with the startup of the Fred Olsen Express line travelling between the inner ports and later with the entry into operation of the passenger and vehicle transport service of Naviera Armas, whose termination was communicated on October 9th.

Backed by the Higher Institute of Business Administration and Tourism, of Portugal, it will look at the tourism management of island spaces, the most current reflections, the most sustainable experiences and good practices. This was communicated at a press conference in La Orotava led by the Mayor, Francisco Linares; councillor for tourism, Delia Escobar; the rector of the European University of the Canary Islands, Cristiana Oliveira; and the Tourism professor and member of the Scientific Committee and the Organising Committee of the Congress, Elena Pérez. For the rector of the European University of the Canary Islands, this first congress on tourism in the islands “is the opportunity to bring together experts, researchers and professionals from all over the world to talk about a sector that is changing and has to be dealt with by an

overall vision.” The Mayor of La Orotava appreciated the effort of the European University of the Canary Islands to launch this initiative “which brings us closer to the reality of an island that is eminently tourist and puts La Orotava in the focus of international institutions, so that the tourist future that is implemented in our islands is the one that all people want. ” Elena Pérez valued the contributions of the work and research that have been received for the congress, more than 70 proposals from representatives of 20 different countries, of which a total of 13 studies will be presented over the two days. One-man counterfeit operation produced false euros

P

OLICE have busted a one-man counterfeit printing press operation which had been churning out false five euro notes for two years.

Officers raided a property in Granada following a tip-off and found forgeries and various materials. Some of the counterfeits were in the process of being printing and there was enough paper and ink to manufactures another 1,000 notes. “The investigations were initiated thanks to anonymous information that provided data on an alleged forger,” said a police spokesman. After verifying the information received, the National Police identified an individual with a history of similar events whose data coincided with those provided in the complaint. “This person could have distributed small amounts of fake five-euro bills over the past two years. He carried out the printing in a very handmade way and he himself was in charge of its distribution,” said the spokesman. The police investigation revealed that hundreds of counterfeit tickets had been distributed in Andalusia, especially in the province of Granada.

T

OURISTS in Spain were picked up on buses which did not have the right legal paperwork, leaving them unknowingly without travel insurance, police have revealed.

The Civil Guard, in the framework of the “Bustalva” operation, arrested a 45-year-old businessman from the transport sector and a resident of Toledo, for illegally acquiring buses in renting mode that he subsequently made available to transport companies. The alleged crimes of documentary falsehood, fraud and misappropriation are alleged. During raids, 19 buses were intervened and the total stoppage of the activities of their companies has been achieved Agents have been able to verify that they could have fraudulently obtained economic benefits that exceed 3.2 million euros since 2017. The operation began when agents of the Traffic Sector of Madrid detected contracts made with falsified documentation of a bus company dedicated to the service of transport of travellers, children and tourists. The suspect managed an important fleet of buses in renting based in Talavera de la Reina (Toledo) and performed passenger transport services nationwide without the companies that hired their services being aware that they had been acquired illegally. The services were therefore carried out without legal guarantee and therefore the drivers and travellers were not covered in their insurance policies.

NINE ARRESTS

Organised gang INFORMATION FOR UK NATIONALS ON VOTING smuggled Albanians into the UK IN THE UK A MESSAGE FROM THE BRITISH EMBASSY

GENERAL ELECTION

T

HE UK is holding a General Election on December 12th. British citizens who have been abroad for 15 years or less can register as an overseas voter (further information can be found at https:// www.gov.uk/voting-when-abroad).

Once registered, you have to renew your registration every year. You will get a reminder when it is time to renew. If you do not renew your registration, you will be removed from the register and must make a fresh application in order to vote again. We have taken steps to help speed up the delivery of postal votes overseas and advise that they are sent back in good time, especially during a period as busy for post in the UK as December is. You can vote from Spain in two ways – by post or by proxy. Overseas voters who are reregistering to vote or newly applying to use a postal vote in the days running up to the deadlines should seriously consider the option of a proxy, as at that stage there will be reduced time needed to send out, complete, and return a postal vote from overseas. If you want to vote by post in Great Britain, your local Electoral Registration Office must receive your postal vote application by 5pm on 26 November. If you want to vote by proxy in Great Britain, your local Electoral Registration Office must receive your proxy vote application by 5pm on 4 December. You cannot vote by post from abroad if your registered address is in Northern Ireland. If you are registered in Northern Ireland, applications to vote by proxy must be received by 5pm on 21 November by the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “I would encourage all British citizens to register to vote if you are able to and you should consider voting by proxy to ensure your vote is counted.” UK Nationals can vote and stand in local elections in Spain as long as you are registered on the padrón where you live. Nine people have been arrested and eleven raids carried out. The operation began in early 2018 when police detected a considerable increase of citizens of Albanian origin who intended to embark clandestinely to the United Kingdom. Officers discovered the organisation behind the smugg-

ling had two cells, one operating in Bilbao-BarakaldoSestao and another in other provinces to provide migrants with the means to survive in Spanish territory until finally being ready for the journey. The stowaways were hidden in trailers, containers, caravans, interiors of boats and boots of vehicles parked in the restricted parking of the shipping companies or in lorries parked in rest areas near the ports where they stayed until the ferries were ready to leave.

The detainees are charged with an alleged continued crime against the rights of foreign citizens, crimes against heritage and socioeconomic order, documentary falsity and against public health; use of stolen credit cards, theft of diesel, theft inside homes and the management and adminis-tration of marijuana plantations for subsequent trade. During the course of the investigation, the British National Crime Agency, the French National Police and EUROPOL collaborated in the exchange of information. .

SECURITY GUARDS

Two arrests and 56 implicated in “PROFESSIONAL TITLES” fraud

N

ATIONAL Police agents have arrested two people in Salamanca who granted private security professional titles in exchange for money.

In addition, another 56 people have been investigated in various parts of the country, including the Canaries, for their possible involvement. The ringleaders are said to have requested an economic consideration from security guards to obtain the title of a course related to their sector, without the need to carry out the training action. They were also responsible for preparing the training titles for which they have been arrested for documentary falsehood as well as for a crime

of fraud. The investigation began following several complaints in Vitoria that reported fraud related to training courses for security guards. With the first inquiries, police found out that professional titles were being delivered in exchange for an economic consideration and without the need for prior training. Likewise, on many occasions, the private security sector worker who received the degree ignored the illegality of such activity.

The investigation has culminated in the arrest in Salamanca of the two responsible for the preparation and delivery of the training titles. Those arrested, who were accredited personnel for the formation of the private security sector, have been charged with a crime of document falsehood and a crime of fraud. In addition, 122 people in several Spanish provinces - Avila, Zamora, León, Palencia, Toledo, Tenerife, Valencia and Orense - have given statements, of which 56 have been investigated for their possible involvement in the events.

lengthy investigation by Spanish police has revealed the breadth of deception paedophiles are going to in order to stalk out young victims, including one man in Tenerife who pretended to be a casting agent and terminally ill.

The research took two years and was instigated by an email from a worried mother to the confidential hotline of denuncias.pornografĂa.infantil@policĂa.es which is completely confidential and particularly spotlights on the dangers of the social network. One of the girls involved, aged 13, had reportedly made the mistake of posting suggestive pictures of herself online which prompted the attention of several paedophiles. Police identified nine different individuals who had not only requested and obtained sexual material from the child but also planned a physical meeting in order to

One of the detainees, 33 years old and resident in Tenerife, impersonated a woman to gain the child’s trust. He then tricked her into saying that she had a terminal illness and her desire to meet

her best friend. After gaining her trust, he sent adult pornography with the intention of assuming any type of sexual conduct on the network and, finally, requested images of a sexual nature. The investigated, in addition, tried to meet with the girl, although the encouner never happened thanks to the police intervention. In Tarragona, police arrested another 26-year-old

male who had sent, at least, photographs of his own genitals. In this case, the detainee had assumed the role of a young boy in a bid to set up sexual encounters. One of the ringleaders was in Madrid, placing advertisements on the social network to say he was a casting agent for a well-known lingerie company. These were answered by many girls who

The tragedy happened in the capital of Palma, near the cathedral, as the Balearics were hit by strong gusts of winds. An investigation is underway but according to the local council, the tree had been checked recently and showed no signs of disease or instability. All other trees in the area were subsequently inspected again. The woman was Brazilian and was with her ten-year-old daughter and her partner whom she was planning to marry. She had moved to Mallorca six months ago. They had either just been or were intending to attend mass at the famous Palma cathedral. It is understood a huge chunk of the palm tree fell on the woman during the storm, knocking her unconscious to the ground. Both her daughter and her partner witnessed the incident as they were walking behind her and had to be treated by medics for distress. The girl was taken to hospital. Police, a fire crew and medics had rushed to the scene and found the woman was in cardiac arrest. Emergency personnel tried to save her life but she could not be revived.

Five things expatriates need to know about UK inheritance tax By Paul Montague, Partner, Blevins Franks

however it is owned. If you hold UK residential property in this way, explore your options for the most tax-efficient way forward.

and personal belongings such as jewellery.

3. A new relief was recently introduced…

Despite the new allowance, the government’s inheritance tax coffers continue to swell in large part due to increasing property values. As house prices have risen, so has the number of estates that fall outside the tax-free thresholds – and the amount payable. Meanwhile, the standard relief – frozen at £325,000 since 2009 and fixed until 2021 – has not kept pace with inflation in the way that the value of property or other assets has. However, there are ways to mitigate UK inheritance tax other than gradually transferring (or spending!) your wealth within your lifetime. Expatriates can explore using Spanish-compliant investment structures, for example, or acquire a domicile of choice overseas. An adviser with specialist, cross-border expertise can help establish your domicile status and how UK inheritance tax interacts with Spanish gift and succession tax. With good estate planning, you can structure your wealth to take advantage of all reliefs available and ensure your legacy ends up in the right hands without leaving your heirs an unnecessary tax bill.

I

Between 2009 and 2017, the only inheritance tax relief was a £325,000 nil-rate band (£650,000 for couples). Now, the ‘residential nil-rate band’ provides extra relief when passing a main home (including overseas homes) to direct descendants. Currently at £150,000, the threshold increases to £175,000 in April 2020 before tracking inflation. As with the standard allowance, you can transfer any unused balance to your spouse/ civil partner, making a total threshold of £1 million for a couple by 2020/21.

1. You could still be UK-domiciled

4. …but it has limitations

NHERITANCE tax revenue continues to soar for the UK Treasury, reaching a record high of £5.4 billion in 2018/19. Make sure you understand your position and how you can minimise exposure for your heirs. Even after years of living abroad, you could still be considered UK-domiciled, bringing your worldwide estate into lability for 40% UK inheritance tax. While it is possible to adopt a domicile of choice overseas by severing all ties with the UK, domicile law is extremely complex. Also, new rules mean that returning to the UK for a relatively short period could reignite inheritance tax liability. For the best outcome, seek specialist, personalised guidance.

2. It affects UK assets, regardless of domicile

Even if you are domiciled outside the UK, any British assets will attract UK inheritance tax. Note that before 5 April 2017, property owned through a corporate structure (‘enveloped’) was generally exempt, but now all UK residential property is liable,

To be eligible for the allowance, the property must be recognised as your main home. As you must have lived in it at some point, this excludes most investment properties. It is only available on property passed directly to children or grandchildren, so homes owned through certain trusts, for example, may not qualify. Estates worth over £2 million have a lower threshold, and those valued over £2.25 million are not currently eligible at all. Note that your entire estate is counted here – including savings and investments, certain trusts, life insurance policies, pension lump sums from the death of a spouse/partner, cars, furniture

5. Your home could tip you over the threshold

Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; individuals should seek personalised advice.

The dreaded roundabouts in Spain and how you should use them M

OST foreign, and even local drivers in Spain find the prospect of using a roundabout daunting and at times frustrating as so many people seem to have their own “rules” when it comes to using them! First and foremost a roundabout is designed to improve the flow of traffic and not to hinder it, but sadly that’s more often than not what happens. Let’s take a look and see if we can clarify their use. We are I am sure all aware that when approaching a roundabout, we are obliged to give way to the traffic already on/using the roundabout. Most accidents on roundabouts occur when exiting not entering, although of course there are incidents when we drive into the rear of a vehicle as we thought/judged that they had entered the roundabout, only to find out BANG they haven’t. In Spain we drive a left-hand

drive car but our normal driving position on a road should always be as far to the right of the road as is possible and this applies to a roundabout as well. If you think of a roundabout as nothing more than a road with curves it may make your approach less terrifying, we have many clients who have said they find roundabouts in Tenerife terrifying and that does not help the smooth flow as the drivers are distracted by their fear. We should ALWAYS exit a roundabout from the right-hand lane, unless there are signs or signals that indicate otherwise. So, to put this into prospective let’s consider a normal journey

along a reasonably straight road with two lanes i.e. a dual carriage way perhaps. We wish to turn right at the next junction, which lane would you need to be in? Of course, that is a no brainer we would have to be in the inside (right hand) lane in order to carry out this maneuver safely. I would hope that none of our readers would consider using the outside lane in these circumstances where you would potentially cut across another vehicle perhaps causing an accident or incident to occur. If the road was the same but with various curves the same rule would apply. So, if you apply the above rules to a roundabout then you would be in the right-hand lane to safely and correctly exit the roundabout. According to the DGT when asked “can I exit a roundabout from the inside

lane” the firm answer is “no” and if an accident occurs the DGT will blame the person not using the roundabout “correctly” i.e. if a car on the inside lane cuts across a car in the right-hand lane

who has not yet exited the roundabout. Confused? We don’t blame you at all, but if you try to consider a roundabout as a straightish road with curves where there are junctions on

the right hand side you may wish to use , apply the same logic to a roundabout and you should remain safe and accident free and on the right side of the law!

Pets World

RSPCA CALLS FOR SUPPORT FOR ITS #BangOutOfOrder CAMPAIGN

A

NIMAL charities are calling for much tighter restrictions on fireworks after once again revealing a catalogue of complaints and incidents in the build-up to and aftermath of November 5th. Officials say thousands of people are supporting their campaign with many saying their pets were “frightened out of their wits” and also pointing out that the so-called Bonfire Night celebrations actually stretched over two weeks. This mainly relates to the UK as Spain doesn’t mark November 5th like Britain though expats in Tenerife do still let off fireworks during parties. The RSPCA has launched its #BangOutOfOrder campaign in a bid to make fireworks less frightening for animals. They say: “We’re not asking for a total ban on fireworks but believe that regulations should be changed to protect animal welfare.” Every year, the organisation receives hundreds of calls about fireworks and animals: 434 in 2016, 533 in 2017 and

411 in 2018. A recent poll confirmed around 62 per cent of dogs show signs of distress during fireworks. This alone means thousands of animals are affected by unplanned and random fireworks each year. Results also saw other animals showing distress during fireworks: 54 per cent of cats and 55 per cent of horses. The British Horse Society reports 20 deaths, ten severe injuries, and 88 mild to moderate injuries in horses in fireworks incidents since 2010. Sadly it’s not just household pets that are affected by fireworks. Farm animals are easily frightened by loud noises and sudden flashes of bright light, which can startle and cause them to injure themselves on fencing and farm equipment.

Wildlife, like hedgehogs, are also at risk of being burnt alive after making their homes in bonfires. Fireworks are also highly disturbing to some birds and have caused abandonment of nests or even whole colonies. “In a recent poll, we found out that 85 per cent think public firework displays should be licensed. This is just one of the regulation changes we’re calling for. If you agree, take action by encouraging your local council to put forward changes,” said an RSPCA spokesman. The Blue Cross animal charity is also calling for changes. They say: “Blue Cross has joined with other charities to ask the government to consider the impact of fireworks on animals, children and vulnerable people, and look again at fireworks regulations.” “While fireworks are fun and exciting for many, the sudden loud bangs and

flashes mean they can also cause fear and confusion for dogs, cats, horses, other animals and people. Current legislation allows adults to set off fireworks between 7am and 11pm at any time of year, and this unpredictability makes it difficult for pet owners and vulnerable people to plan to avoid them. Around Bonfire Night, Diwali, New Year’s Eve and Chinese New Year, fireworks can be let off even later. At times of the year popular with fireworks, any retailer can sell them without needing a licence.” “Together with PTSD UK, Children’s Burns Trust, the British Veterinary Association, Dogs Trust, Cats Protection, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, and the Kennel Club, we are today highlighting the debilitating effect that fireworks can have on vulnerable people and pets. We are asking members of the Houses of Commons and Lords to sign a pledge calling on the government to review existing fireworks law with a view to place restrictions on their use

that would alleviate the unnecessar y distress on human and animal welfare.” And here’s a quick reminder with other celebrations to come: Always keep dogs and cats inside when fireworks are being let off Make sure your dog is walked earlier in the day before the fireworks start Close all windows and doors, and block off catflaps to stop pets escaping and to keep noise to a minimum. Draw the curtains, and if the animals are used to the sounds of TV or radio, switch them on (but not too loudly) in order to block out some of the noise of the fireworks. Ensure dogs are wearing some form of easily readable identification (ID) – even in the house. They should have at least a collar and tag. Think about fitting pets with a microchip, so that if they do run away they have a better chance of being quickly reunited with you Prepare a ‘den’ for your pet where it can feel safe and

comfortable – perhaps under a bed with some of your old clothes. They may like to hide there when the fireworks start. Let your pet pace around, whine, miaow and hide in a corner if they want to. Do not try to coax them out – it’s just tr ying to find safety, and should not be disturbed. Stay calm, act normally and give lots of praise for calm behaviour. It’s OK to cuddle and stroke your pet if it helps them relax, but if they prefer to hide under your bed, then let them do this instead. Avoid leaving your pet alone during such potentially upsetting events. If you do have to leave the house, don’t get angry with your pet if you find they have been destructive or toileted after being left on its own. Shouting at a frightened pet will only make them more stressed. Don’t tie your dog up outside while fireworks are being let off, ie outside a shop while you pop inside, or leave them in the garden or in your car.

La Bodeguita de Enfrente

Cuesta de la Villa

Cuesta de la Villa

Cuesta de la Villa

A great part of the fun of wining and dining in Tenerife is finding somewhere different and it’s well worth a trip out to Santa Ursula to the warm and inviting Donde Mario. Though from the outside you might easily pass by it, the inside is elegant and captivating. Restaurateur Mario Torres surprises us every day with his extensive use of produce in season, and his unbeatable experience with wines and cookery. Just try his Cherne warm salad, a super-healthy Canarian fish soup, or his Lomo de Vaca Morucha. You will be captivated.

Set in a series of old Canary houses, this restaurant is made up of a labyrinth of inter-connecting rooms leading off from the bar area in the centre. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an English country pub with its low ceilings with wooden beams and warm décor. The food is fundamentally Canarian. They grow most of their own produce at their allotment and only use olive oil to cook with. Their ethos is a simple one, only use the best, fresh produce and cook it with thought and care. The menu is described as Picoteo, slightly more than tapas without reaching the full-blown three-course meal status. It is delicious and affordable. “La Bodeguita de Enfrente” won the “II Gastronomic Awards Cruzcampo Gran Reserva El Día-Mesa Abierta”, which took place last year.

Why not try a touch of “picoteo”, the Spanish-style of eating where, as the name suggests, you pick a selection of dishes and share with your companions. You will find “El Calderito de la Abuela” in Santa Úrsula and it offers a unique and homely atmosphere combining Canary cuisine with modern creativity. In 2016, “El Calderito de la Abuela” won the “Best Canarian Kitchen Restaurant Award” in the first edition of the “El Dia-Mesa Abierta” Awards on July 28th. The exterior of this property belies what you will find inside as it is full of charm and carácter and there is an incredible view of La Orotava valley. “A gem” is how it is described.

Each cover will be sold at the price of 2.50 euros and will include a drink (can of the beer, glass of local wine, water or soft drink) and will be available to the public at the time determined by each place. The three best tapas, according to the jury made for this purpose by Apymeer and the votes contained in the routometers, will win different prizes in cash; while a second prize will be reserved for the surprise dish that will earn a gift. The prizes will be donated by Apymeer and the popular vote will be carried out through the votes contained in the routometers that will be distributed by the municipality.

Friday theatre and dance in Adeje

T

HEATRE and dance has returned to the municipality of Adeje.

The XXII Theatre and Dance Show of Adeje started on November 8th and continues until November 29th. The shows are taking place in the theatre of the cultural centre of Adeje every Friday of November at 8.30pm. “From Adeje council, we invite all people who love theatre to come and enjoy each of the works that we have brought to the municipality,” said councillor, Clavijo Maza, who also pointed out that “the theatre is very important throughout history and therefore, we will continue to promote it as a fundamental part of the cultural offer. ” On Friday, November 22nd, “Burka Theater” presents “Borondón is not Isla de Santos”, with the story of Pedro Hernández, the pirate who participated in the conquest of Gran Canaria. Admission is free. This year, the show will be closed by “Delirium Theater” on Friday, November 29th with “Proyecto Fausto” inspired by the case of the Canarian fishing vessel Fausto, a ship that in 1968 disappeared completely inexplicably while covering the route between the islands of El Hierro and La Palma with three fishermen and a passenger on board. The work raises the crossing of a lost ship, found and disappeared again at sea up to three times. A story told through the voice of four women condemned to the loneliness of those who wait. To the anguish of never knowing the truth. To the pain of loss. The women of Faust. A tragic and universal feeling, that so many human beings are currently living. Tickets on sale at the Adeje Cultural Centre.

Nativity scenes with a flavour of the Canaries

W

ONDERFUL nativity scenes with a nod to the Canaries can be seen in various parts of Tenerife between now and the New Year.

La Laguna artist Santi González Arbelo is well-known nationally and internationally for his festive creations, known in Spanish as “belens”. The scenes feature the birth of Christ and all the associated figures, animal, human and magical, but this year, they have a flavour of the Canary Islands too. Even figures of the legendary Guanches, the first inhabitants of the archipelago, make an appearance next to the Three Wise Men. One of the places to visit up until January 7th is La Casa de Las Semillas of Icod de los Vinos where the belen has the title “Jesus and his eight loves” in reference to the eighti slands of the Canaries. The scenes feature the basilica of Candelaria, numerous typical Canarian prints, the El Drago dragon tree and its surroundings, wineries and the world of wine and waterfalls. Santi also takes his creations to the municipalities of Los Silos, the San Marcos de Icod Beach Yacht Club, the Church del Cristo de Icod, La Laguna, Garachico and La Orotava.

Agatha Christie Festival proves international hit and could become annual

T

HE Agatha Christie Festival in Puerto de la Cruz is more international than ever.

This seventh edition explored a more collaborative and inclusive approach, resulting in the most creative and international edition yet. According to the comments of the participants themselves, the festival was the best of all those made to date. This edition was sponsored by Puerto de la Cruz council, through its Department of Tourism, and the Tenerife Tourism and Rehabilitation Consortium. More than 30 organisations collaborated selflessly, including the European University of the Canary Islands. The festival waa marked by international character in every way, not only by the assistance of speakers from the United Kingdom and Ireland, but more importantly for a tourist destination, the assistance of people attracted by the life and works of Agatha Christie, coming mostly from the United Kingdom but also from places as far away as Canada, who have discovered the histor y and corners of Puerto de la Cruz and that according to the feedback received, will not hesitate to return for a new edition. An example is Mike and Christian, two tourists staying at the Hotel El Tope and followers of the crime authoress who were visiting from England and Germany. Mike, very active in social networks, highlighted the creativity of the festival and the treatment received by the organisers, hotels and volunteers. All the activities have had a high response from the public, including the historical routes, one of the star activities which put the “sold out” sign on

President of the CIT of Puerto de la Cruz, whose participation has been decisive for the

several occasions, the photo exhibition of the time in which Agatha visited the city, the conferences , the original version of the cinema, the theatrical routes, the escape room and the activity in which the National Police participated. Another special success was the tasting of chocolate and wine, inspired by two works by Agatha Christie, The Chocolate box and Sparkling Cyanide. Participants didn’t even known until the end where the event took place as their eyes had been covered. This edition tried to leave other traces of the writer’s visit, specifically through an artistic

performance with the painting of the risers of a staircase that gives access to the San Amaro area, very close to the area through which the writer walked in 1927. On twentyfour steps, the spines of 23 of Agatha Christie’s works have been painted, reserving one of them to include The Secret Notebooks of Agatha Christie, the work of John Curran, the author’s official biographer and a regular at the Puerto festival. Now the organisation is considering whether this festival should be annual and not biannual as it has been to date. Ulrike Schmidt, Vice

success of the festival, said the decision will depend on institutional support and

sponsorship but all the team behind the festival are united in the cause.

New Percussion School aims to introduce children to music

SINGING NEXT?

S

ANTA Cruz city council has created a Municipal Percussion School to provide free music training twice a week to boys and girls under 16 in the surroundings of the old market of the district of La Salud.

The project was made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Carnival Culture Classroom and the Cepsa Foundation to introduce young children to music and to improve percussion among the children’s groups of the Carnival. The Percussion School is open to the participation of children and young people in general, although in its registration, priority is given to the components of the children’s murgas of the Chicharrero Carnival. As noted by the councillor of fiestas, Andrés Martín, the training proposal is not limited to polishing talent among the components of the children’s murgas. “It is not only about training great percussionists in children’s groups of the Carnival to improve the quarry and give it even more shine to the Santa Cruz festival but we also want to awaken and encourage the interest of the

smallest members of the family to music,” he explained. The educational programme of the centre covers the months of November, December and part of 2020 with the possibility to combine training with the rehearsals of the groups during the Carnival. Thanks to the collaboration of the Cepsa Foundation and the demand of the students, the Percussion School could have greater continuity over time. As Andrés Martín pointed out, the Santa Cruz City Council could increase the offer on other disciplines such as singing through the different

areas of the city: “There is an intention to expand the Percussion School next year to meet the demand and it may be necessary incorporate a new teacher. ” Classes are taught by professional percussionist Roberto Amor on Fridays from 5pm to 7pm and on Saturdays from 11am to 1pm at the headquarters of the San Gerardo residents’ association. To be part of the project, it is necessary to make a previous registration through the telephone number 670 096 071.

GRANADILLA PROGRAMME

“Seraphicum Splendor” Go walking with marks 500 years of history Senderíza-t F

IVE hundred years ago, the history of La Orotava witnessed the arrival of one of the best known religious orders of all time: the Franciscans.

The celebration this year of the Fifth Centenary of the Convent of San Lorenzo is a unique opportunity to highlight the importance that this Franciscan Order had in the historical, artistic, cultural and social development of the Villa, which has been transmitted throughout the different generations until today. Although there have been many vicissitudes that the Order suffered in time - fires, confiscations and transfers its impact was very prominent and it is impossible not to find the Franciscan footprint in the Villa. Hence, from that inheritance, an interesting commemorative exhibition, Seraphicum Splendor, is born, whose main objective is to gather the most relevant

associated with the iconography of San Francisco, coming from both religious precincts and private collections. Therefore, all this material is now shown as a unitary and properly contextualized set. The exhibition is divided into two venues, the

San Roque room (behind the Church of San Agustín) and the sacristy of the Matriz Parroquia de La Concepción. It can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 1pm and from 5pm to 7pm. Sundays and holidays from 5pm to 8pm.

To this initiative will be added soon other walks until December such as the one of Chinyero-San José de Los Llanos, on November 24th; and Vilaflor-Ifonche, on December 5th. Registration to participate in this programme of activities, directed mainly for the registered in the municipality, is made through the offices of the Citizen Service (SAC) and has a price of twelve euros, and includes guide, transport and insurance . The schedule of each activity will be from approximately 7am to 6pm and it is recommended to wear appropriate clothing and footwear and take food and water. RE you thinking about getting a new hearing aid? New technology means all sorts of de tails are now available. Here we explain some of the elements involved.

INTEGRATED DIRECTIONALITY Continuous automatic earto-ear data exchange. The user can maintain and follow a conversation without losing awareness of what is going on around The hearing aid adjusts and adapts automatically, optimising the microphone configuration in each ear depending on the environment.

ADAPTIVE NOISE REDUCTION Unique and fast-acting spectral subtraction technology that accurately identifies speech and noise and reduces unwanted noise without degrading the voice signal. Provides comfort in noisy listening situations without compromising speech comprehension.

Better listening in five different environments. Hearing aids analyse the surrounding environment and automatically apply the preset gain as the user moves from one acoustic environment to another. Users benefit from automatic gain adjustments without having to make any manual adjustments themselves.

FREQUENCY COMPRESSION Designed to provide more audibility of sounds for those users with severe to profound hearing loss at the high frequency level. High frequency hearing loss between serious and profound can prevent the audibility of a high-pitched sound, which means that these users will lose speech information in this range, with this function these sounds can become audible.

ADAPTIVE REDUCTION OF WIND NOISE Specific technique designed to detect and reduce wind noise. Ideal function for users who do: cycling, hiking, golf or simply to enjoy life anywhere outdoors without compromising sound quality or speech comprehension.

AUTOMATIC DIRECTIONALITY

The headphones analyse the sound environment and change the microphone settings between omnidirectional and directional. Global sound or focused sound. Smooth transition so that the user does not notice the change. More natural sound Automatic activation for a better understanding of speech.

GAIN FOR ENVIRONMENTS

FEEDBACK PLUS CONTROL Coupling cancellation function that uses two cancellation filters to eliminate beeps without reducing amplification or compromising sound quality. Eliminates feedback from sudden movements and objects placed near the ear. There is no sound distortion.

AUTOMATIC ADAPTATION Automatic adaptation gradually increases the gain over time to finally achieve the prescribed gain. It allows new hearing aid users to adapt progressively, comfortably and without problems, ideal for users who cannot travel to the hearing centre frequently.

Other functions that are interesting to keep in mind and that make the difference between cheap and expensive: Rechargeable, the synchronisation of programmes, the remote control of your hearing aids and the transmission of any sound you want from a television, telephone or even a concert. In addition, customers can use their iPhone® or Android ™ phone to control volume and change hearing aid programmes discreetly and remotely. SPAIN GETS THE THUMBS UP, SAYS ARTEDENTAL

Why trust a dentist outside the UK? E

XPERIENCING a health problem abroad is one of the worst situations that one can go through. Universal health care is a privilege that only some privileged countries have. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), “about half of the world’s population lacks comprehensive access to basic health services.” And we do mean BASIC health services.

If you are on a tourist route through the Amazon, for example, and require an emergency operation, start shaking. However, if you are on vacation in Spain, these fears have no justification. The 2018 Bloomberg report, which analyses the health system of 200 countries, rates Spanish as the third most efficient in the world; The Global Burden of Diseases 2016 analysis, published in the Lancet magazine, gives Spain the 9th position with 92 points out of 100 (the same study gives the United Kingdom 90 points). And a report published in August by CEOWorld Magazine by Numbeo (,who define themselves as “the world’s largest database of user contributed data about cities and countries worldwide. Numbeo provides current and timely information on world living conditions including cost of living, housing indicators, health care, traffic, crime and pollution ) places Spain in its top ten of the ranking called the 2019 Health Index, composed also of Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Austria, Denmark, Thailand, Spain (7th position with a 78.42), France, Belgium and Australia. United Kingdom occupies the 13th position.

If we talk about services such as dental, which not even in Europe are covered in an integral way, in Spain you can trust to be in the hands of welltrained professionals with access to the latest technology. Artedental is a dental clinic located in one of the most important tourist centres in Spain, in Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife), and therefore with extensive experience in the care of foreign patients. “Nearly 70% of our patients are of British and German origin, and we understand that they have very specific needs when they attend a clinic abroad,” explains Amaya

Sáez, Artedental manager. From the clinic, professionals recommend, as in any country in Europe, to conduct a brief investigation on the best clinics near the accommodation. “Testimonials and assessments of other patients, training

of professionals who work in it, access to the latest technology and good care in English are key factors when choosing where to be treated,” insists Sáez. The non-profit organisation, The English-Speaking

Healthcare Association Spain (ESHA), whose mission is, according to the organisation itself, “to promote excellence and ensure the quality of health care among the Englishspeaking community in Spain,” explains in fact that in

order to become a dentist in Spain, it is necessary to be registered in the different dentist associations after five years of university training or European equivalent; and qualifies the training as “high level and competence”.

Sports gala honours the best athletes and teams of La Orotava L

A Orotava has paid tribute to the athletes of the municipality with the celebration of the annual Sports Gala.

The event is also an act of recognition and thanks to all those who practise sports in any modality as this also implies maintaining healthy life habits. From the local institution, an important commitment is made to grassroots sports, and clubs and athletes in general are helped, as well as investments to improve and modernise sports infrastructure and facilities. A crowded public hall hosted an emotional Gala in its 18th edition. The event, presented by sports journalist Pedro Barreto, was chaired by Mayor Francisco Linares; the Director of Sports of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Laura Castro and the councillor for sports, Antonio Lima. Also present were other members of the municipal corporation, athletes, friends and family. The gala pays tribute to the best athletes, clubs and teams in the municipality, and other values and trajector y are also distinguished. In this edition the young Elvira Luis González, champion of Tenerife in javelin throwing under 16 and second classified in the island games, was chosen as the Best Sportsman. He has also been in second place in the Canarian championships of weight throwing and three times of javelin throwing, in addition to being 32nd in the National Ranking of javelin throwing sub 16 2019. Argimiro José Pérez García is the Best Sportsman who at only 14 years is a firm promise of the Orotava-Puerto de la Cruz Volleyball club. He brings quality and technique to the

teams of children and male cadet of the club, and participated in one of the successes of the Canar y volleyball last season, obtaining the Spanish championship of regional teams. He is also a children’s Canarian champion and third in the regular phase of the island’s volleyball league. The distinction of Best Sports Club went to the Orotava-Clator Athletics Club which has about 400 athletes of all ages, and thanks to many of them and their achievements they have won important awards in the insular, regional and Canary Islands. The journalist Cipriano García received an award as Sports Spirit, and the rhythmic gymnastics coach Candelaria Pavón Lostra the Sports Development for her 18 years of dedication helping numerous gymnasts. The mountain group Sombras del Teide obtained recognition for Human Values; the referee Carlos Díaz García is distinguished by his Sports Trajectory and Gregorio Cabrera receives, on a posthumous basis, Honorific Award. Mayor Francisco Linares began his speech with warm words precisely for this posthumous and honorar y award to Gregorio Cabrera, known to ever yone as Goyo. He highlighted his work and values, and regretted not having given him this recognition before “because sometimes we do not look at those people who give everything every day because we get used to seeing it, but his work has always been valued, his dedication to sports and ,

especially the base sport, and that he was a great and good person ”. He also highlighted the work and values of each of those distinguished in this gala, for their contribution in multiple ways and for devoting much of their life to sports in La Orotava. He also thanked the support of the Cabildo de Tenerife for sport and the presence of the insular director at the event. Sr. Linares thanked the work of all athletes and those who work behind, managers and others, to make everything work, valuing the hours and effort devoted to it. Among other data, he stressed that the Villa has more than 50 clubs and more than 3,500 athletes in the base sport.

TWO PROJECTS

Solved at last, leaking roofs at sports centres!

A

RONA is to renew the roofs of the sports complex Jesús Domínguez Grillo and Las Galletas.

The Mayor, José Julián Mena, accompanied by the councillors of department of works and sports, visited the Los Cristianos sports hall, whose tendering and awarding process for the roof repair works will culminate in the next weeks so that work can begin after years of leaks and rainwater filtration. Both Jesús Domínguez Grillo and the Las Galletas sports pavilion have suffered for years from various deficiencies in the roofs, which have caused leaks and rainwater filtration, a situation that will be solved with repair work. With the first to be awarded shortly, in the second case, the drafting of the repair project will soon be put out to tender, which will allow the process of bidding of the works to begin in the coming months. All this is framed in the process of modernisation and creation of new sports infrastructures, which in recent years has led to the construction of the San Lorenzo Valley pavilion, the replacement of artificial lawns, the installation of new stands and the project of renovation of different soccer fields. The repair works of the roof of Jesús Domínguez Grillo have a budget of 85,000 euros and a period of execution of two months and will consist of the disassembly of the roof for the placement of a new sheet, cleaning and repair of the structure.

MAYOR “ENTHRALLED”

Santa Cruz thrilled by success of VI International Marathon

S

ANTA Cruz became the athletic capital of Tenerife as the International Marathon took to the streets.

The Mayor, Patricia Hernández kicked off the historic event that gave citizens a new opportunity for outdoor sports and leisure in the city. Saturday November 9th saw the celebration of the VI International Marathon Santa Cruz de Tenerife Naviera Armas that culminated in the presentation of trophies. The Mayor, accompanied by sports councillor, Elena Mateo sounded the off for the different modalities of the urban race and was “fascinated” by what was her first marathon during her tenure. More than 4,000 people competed in the three distances, the eight-kilometre being the most popular of them all with about 900 women among its 2,270 participants. Patricia Hernández said she was very “satisfied” by the increase in the number of women who took part, an aim of the new council for not just the marathon but all sporting disciplines. “I am very satisfied with the important increase in women who have participated in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife International Marathon, but it is still insufficient and has to continue growing in the coming years,” she pledged. This edition the Marathon Santa Cruz de Tenerife was decorated in purple to honour the more than 1,200 registered runners and encourage the participation of women to reach 50 per cent in future editions. The people who disputed the test came from several points of the archipelago and the countr y. About 2,500 athletes from Tenerife and another 1,300 from the rest of the islands and the peninsular territory were registered. In the competition there was also representation of 50 nationalities of several continents among its participants. Patricia Hernández

thanked everyone for their contribution to the good development of the event whose celebration had to be advanced from Sunday to Saturday on the occasion of the election day. “Thank you all for all the patience you have shown by the changes in traffic undertaken to ensure the safety of the race and thereby allow Santa Cruz de Tenerife to return to a unique place in the celebration of mass sporting events such as this Marathon, ” she said. Onw of the advantages of this unique event is its coastal route which facilitated the achievement of good records in both experienced and new athletes. The day was completed with parallel dynamic activities and a wide range of recreational and sports activities designed to attract all members of the family and especially children. The event was broadcast live and in high definition by RadioTelevisión Canaria with the support of a drone that filmed the most spectacular details and images. In addition, the development of the test could be followed from anywhere in the world through the chain’s website. Likewise, an important number of national and foreign media were accredited to cover the event. Some of the participants travelled to the island to publish their own experience running in the Marathon in the specialised pages. The Santa Cruz de Tenerife International Marathon promotes the values of athletics, healthy activities and their practise in an environment of unbeatable conditions, as well as showing the beauty of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife to everyone.

City pledges to tackle “forgotten sports spaces” T

HE new city council of Santa Cruz has pledged to restore “forgotten” sports spaces and infrastructure to promote healthy habits and outdoor sports among local families.

The authority has just approved specifications for the rehabilitation of the San Andrés Sports Centre and three basketball courts in La Salud, Ofra and Plaza Duggi. Sports councillor, Elena Mateo said: “The city council of Santa Cruz is carrying out a transformation of the urban residential space so that all citizens can enjoy the practice of sports near their homes and in the districts.” The rehabilitation work that will be undertaken includes the replacement of damaged plaster, review of electrical installations, paints and surface treatments of the court. It is also planned to incorporate a series of elements of new urban furniture and the restitution of baskets and goals. The Governing Board has carried out the approval of the specifications for the contracting of the works for the recovery of these public sports spaces, which once set in motion will conclude within four months. The works will not be limited to the enclosures but also their surroundings. The basic tender budget exceeds an amount of 831,000 euros.

How might the General Election in the UK affect the Spanish housing market? T

HE UK is preparing for General Elections in December and Spain has just gone to the polls. The British are the biggest source of foreign demand for homes in Spain. So, what impact might these elections have on the Spanish housing market, especially in areas that attract British investors? Read on for my guesswork.

United Kingdom General Election December 12th 2019 British demand is very important to the Spanish housing market on the coast and in both archipelagos. For many years the British have been the biggest group of foreign investors by far in aggregate, and number one or two in Andalusia (Malaga / Costa del Sol), the Valencian region (Alicante / Costa Blanca), Murcia (Costa Calida), the Balearics and the Canaries. Any change in UK demand will be felt immediately in these areas, as it was after the Brexit referendum, when UK demand slumped for two quarters before recovering some lost ground. British buyers have been falling in numbers in the last two quarters for which figures are available, so confidence was already declining before the UK election was called. PM. But that would just extend uncertainty into the future, with new referendums on Scotland and the EU back on the table. More of the same I guess, just worse. The betting odds from William Hill are currently around 1/7 for a Conservative victory, and Labour 5/1, with a hung parliament on 6/5. The forex market – another way of betting on the UK – has gone from around 1.10 to 1.15 EURGBP in the last month with the Boris deal and elections on the table with the Conservatives leading in the polls. The latest opinion poll of polls have Conservative on 37%, Labour 24%, and Lib Dems 18%. So, on balance it currently looks like the most probable outcome is a Conservative victor y with a Boris-EU deal that avoids the major economic disruption of no deal, and probably maintain the rights of Brits to travel in the EU. It makes sense for people who are looking to buy in Spain in no hurr y to wait and see what happens in both Spanish and UK general elections in the next two months. If the results are good then go ahead, if not, put those plans on hold. For vendors it’s a difficult time to find a buyer, given the time of the year and political uncertainty in Spain and the UK. What often interests British vendors is selling whilst the Pound is weak, which boosts the value of the capital they repatriate. The Pound has been climbing recently with confidence in a deal and Conservative victor y, but that could all change in a heartbeat. There’s not much vendors can do other than wait and see. Slashing asking prices probably wouldn’t help much now British buyers head for Spain thanks to economic confidence and a sense of wealth to afford a retirement or second home in Spain, with buyer numbers generally rising and falling with the strength of the Pound. Any election result that reduces British wealth and weakens the Pound will curtail British demand, though a hard Brexit, or any Brexit deal that limits British access to Europe (think 90 day limits) will also crimp demand. However, I guess it’s also possible that a government that proves to be a disaster for the British economy could stimulate demand for property in Spain as Brits try to get their wealth out of the UK. The first consequence of the December election is likely to be British demand put on hold as people wait and see what happens on election day in the UK. Luckily for the market in Spain, there are never many buyers around at this time of the year anyway. I’m a bystander because I failed to register in time, so I’ve lost the right to vote in UK elections (you have to register for overseas voting within 10 years of emigrating) but in a way it’s a relief as I wouldn’t know who to vote for in this election. I guess a Conservative overall majority would mean the implementation of a deal already agreed with the EU, which should reduce uncertainty, lift the Pound, guarantee British access to Europe, and keep alive British demand for property in Spain. I think that an overall Conservative majority is the best scenario for maintaining British demand for property in Spain. As I understand it, an overall majority for Labour is a long shot, which is extraordinary considering the current state of the Tories, and shows how unattractive Labour are under Corbyn. But in the unlikely event of a Labour overall majority, I would expect serious economic turbulence with the hard left in power, for a slump in the Pound, perhaps capital controls, and bond market mayhem. This would hammer UK wealth and demand for property abroad, though, on the other hand, it could trigger wealth flight

from the UK looking for safer assets abroad, including property in Spain. From what I can tell a hung parliament and Lib-Lab-SNP coalition is a likely scenario, perhaps without Corbyn as

either. All we can do is wait for the elections to pass, and hope they delivery positive results for the Spanish housing market. At least we don’t have long to wait.
